Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, to the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years before moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Washington and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter-in-law, Diana Lundgren and a sister, Marie Alexander. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Bay Port United Methodist Church or the Bay Port Historical Society. Arrangements were made by the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon.

Danny Dell Tolford, 69, died May 15, 2009, at his home due to heart failure. Dan was born in Adrian on Nov. 14, 1939, to James Clare Tolford and DeSales Tolford-Rodabaugh. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother Duane Tolford; sisters DeSira Rodabaugh and Diane Hokanson; and step-sister Erie Pease. Dan graduated from Onsted in 1959 and was a star athlete in both football and basketball. He was an avid golfer, an Air Force veteran, a retired Teamster and member of Crossroads Fellowship Church. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Jean Tolford; his stepfather, Sy Rodabaugh; a son, Danny Shawn Tolford; a daughter, Julie Renay Crawford; stepchildren Anthony Dothsuk and Daniel Wright; 12 grandchildren; sister Nancy Bissett; and seven stepsisters/brothers.

Darrell R. Curtis, age 72, of Constantine, Mich.,  passed away  Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his home. He was born April 20, 1937, in Butler Township, a son of  Lloyd W. and Margaret (Lampman) Curtis. Darrell graduated from Quincy High School in 1956 an served in the U.S. Army.  On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Erma Birkey in Coldwater. Darrell worked in sales at Dynamax Corp. in Elkhart, Ind., for 10 years and previously  for Carriage RV in Millersburg, Ind. He was a former member of the F.F.A and Flying Hooves 4-H Club in Quincy and served as a judge at fairs and shows. Darrell also enjoyed traveling, fishing and golfing. Mostly he loved his family, friends and enjoying life. Surviving are his wife, Erma Curtis, Constantine; a sister , Diannia (Jim) Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers,  Dennis Curtis,  White City, Ore. and Doran Curtis of Quincy; a brother-in-law, Dale Paul of Quincy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Curtis and Margaret Jeannette Curtis Wilcox; a brother, Leland Curtis; and a sister, Karen Paul. Relatives and friends will be received 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine, where religious services will be held at 6 p.m.  Wednesday. Graveside services will be held at noon Thursday at the Lester Cemetery in Quincy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family. He was born July 3, 1927, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of Frank and Dee (Wilson)Aldrich. He had resided in the ThreeRivers area for the last five years, coming from White Pigeon. He married Irene E. Sheets, and they were later divorced. He later married Gloria Brown, who preceded him in death. He was most recently married toJoyce J. (Nottoli) Aldrich. He was owner and operator of Aggregate processors Inc. of White Pigeon until his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Centreville. He was a graduate of LaGrange High School and a past member of the Sauganash Country Club in ThreeRivers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Surviving are his wife, Joyce J. Aldrich of Three Rivers; two daughters, Linda (Kenneth)Linn of Edwardsburg and Barbara Jacobs of Euless, Texas; two sons, Ron (Sandy) Aldrich of Schoolcraft and Larry Aldrich of Mansfield, Ohio; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Kathy Nottoli, Jody (Steve)Robinson and Barbara Reber; two stepsons, Michael (Donna) Nottoli and Thomas (Kitty)Nottoli; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and a brother. There will be no visitation. Cremation has been conducted. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St.Paul’s Lutheran Church in Centreville, with the Rev. David Grimm officiating. Burial will follow in Constantine Township Cemetery in Constantine. E. Lester Monroe, 91, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born March 23, 1918, in Harrison to Mortimer Linus and Euphemia Isabel (Merritt) Monroe. He was married June 24, 1940, to Beulah May Stubberfield. They shared more than 63 years together before she passed away in March of 2004. Lester served his country in the U.S. Army as a mechanic and driver during World War II. He worked for various companies, ran a service station, retiring from Watkins Oil where he worked as a diesel mechanic for 31 years. He retired in 1983 and enjoyed many winters in Florida. Lester is survived by his children, Kay (Larry) Hickman, Agnes Monroe-Wyatt, Lois Glassburn and John (Bonnie) Monroe; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sons-in-law, L. Francis Glassburn and Richard Wyatt; sisters Grace, Pauline, Viola Almira, and Mildred. There will be a memorial service for Lester Monroe 11 a.m. Saturday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Daniel Pann officiating. EDNA ROSANNA VATTER SANDUSKY Edna Rosanna Vatter, age 94, of Sandusky, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Marlette Hospice Residence. She was born May 12, 1914 in Snover, Michigan the daughter of the late Edwin and Rosanna (Richards) Hill. Edna married Donald Nicholas Vatter on March 5, 1932 in Snover, Michigan. He passed away July 17, 1982. She was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church, Sandusky. She was a nurses aide for many years at the Sandusky Hospital. Edna lived with and was lovingly cared for by Tom and Nancy Miller of Brown City for eight and one half years. She is survived by three daughters; Jeanette McLeish of North Carolina, Ruth Ann (Harry) Walker of Sandusky, Karen (Don) Innes of North Carolina, ten grandchildren; Toni Trexler of North Carolina, Daniel (Cindy) McLeish of Texas, Lynn Nichol of North Carolina, Vohn (Tammy) McLeish of Texas, Suzette Lautner of Dexter, Nicholas (Bonnie) Walker of Minnesota, Rich (Sandy) Innes of North Carolina, Bret Innes of North Carolina, Shelby Innes of Port Huron, Melissa Innes of Port Huron, thirteen great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by one son-in-law; Earl McLeish, one grandson; Chuck Lautner, six sisters; Mary Clark, Lila Padden, Ada Waun, Jennie Armstead, Myrtle Kramp and Carrie Snell, four brothers; Walter, Orville, Clark and Milo Hill. Eleanor Lucille Kennedy, age 77, of Sturgis, Mich., was called home by her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, from Thurston Woods Village. She was born Dec. 28, 1931, at the home of her grandparents in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Gladwyn and Beatrice (Murray) Kennedy. Eleanor graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1950. After working locally for five years, she enrolled at Emmaus Bible School in Oak Park, Ill., and was employed there for 17 years. She later worked for the Regular Baptist Press in the graphic arts department doing desktop publishing, retiring in 2001 and returning to Sturgis. Eleanor was very involved in her churches, the Woodside Bible Chapel in Maywood, Ill., and the Sturgis Bible Chapel in Sturgis. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, walking at the Doyle Center, and was an avid knitter, knitting hundreds of vests for children in Africa. Surviving are two sisters, Laura (Richard) McCoy of Sturgis and Patricia (Frank) Hercinger of Fennville; four nieces, Brenda (Kenneth) Moore of Kalamazoo, Deborah (Larry) Fraylick of Sturgis, Dawn (Paul) Clements of Plymouth and Becky (Michael) Wendlick of Green Bay, Wis.; a nephew, Frank G. Hercinger of Fennville; five great-nephews; a great-great-niece; an aunt, Lucille Holt of Sturgis; numerous cousins; and many close friends, including Florence Ekkel. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. today at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Eleanor L. Emma Olita Cheney, 99, of Blissfield, passed away Friday evening, May 29, 2009, at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility in Adrian. Emma was born on Nov. 18, 1909, in Jasper, Mich., the daughter of Harvey and Nettie (Harsh) DeLano. She graduated from Sand Creek High School and attended Lenawee County Normal. She was married on Feb. 20, 1931, to Leo C. Cheney, who preceded her in death in 1993. Emma worked as a school teacher and worked at Gerity’s in Adrian during World War II. She also worked as a meat cutter at Pence Market, and farmed alongside her husband in Ogden Township. Emma also enjoyed tending her vegetable garden. Surviving is her daughter-in-law, Marilyn Cheney of Blissfield; four grandchildren, Deborah (Richard) Marks of Blissfield, David (Linda) Cheney of Cadillac, Mich., Diane (Timothy) Sander of Blissfield, and Laura (Jeffery) Barth of Onsted; sister Uva Hughes of Adrian; 13 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.  Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo; son Gerald Rex Cheney; two brothers; and one sister. A graveside funeral service for family will be Sunday, May 31, at 2 p.m. at the Ogden Zion Cemetery in Ogden Township with the Rev. Geoff Koglin, Hospice of Lenawee chaplain officiating. Arrangements were made with the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield.  Memorial contributions in memory of Emma may be sent to Hospice of Lenawee. Erma M. Miller, 102, of 1995 S-600 W, Topeka, Ind., died at 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Goshen General Hospital, Goshen, Ind., where she had been a patient since May 18. She was born May 13, 1907, in LaGrange County, Ind., to James Elmer and Ida (Eash) Miller. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Ivan M. Miller. He died Oct. 15, 1994. She was a homemaker and a member of the Emma Mennonite Church, where she had been active in the W.M.S.C.  She had served as a volunteer at the Fort Wayne State Hospital for several years and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a 1924 graduate of Shipshewana High School and enjoyed quilting and gardening and spending time in her flower beds. Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Allen) Zehr of Bedford, Ind., and Evelyn (Ellsworth) Byler of Sturgis, Mich.;  three sons, Gaylord (Marilyn) Miller of Topeka, Maurice (Norma) Miller of Topeka, and Larry (Fran) Miller of Topeka; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;  five half-sisters, Ruth Louise Lambright of Goshen, Helen (Wayne) Neff of LaGrange, Rosalie Yoder of Topeka, Marilyn (Lester) Burkey of Hebron, Ind., and Carolyn Dillon of Ligonier, Ind.;  and two half-brothers, Dwight Miller of Goshen and DeWayne (Shelby) Miller of Cape Coral, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Delmar and Ronald Miller; a half-brother, Francis Miller; two sisters, Beulah Stutzman and Charlotte Morningstar; and two brothers, William and Harold Miller. Visitation will be 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Emma Mennonite Church, Topeka. FRANK W. WILLIS LEXINGTON Frank W. Willis, age 95, of Lexington, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born January 12, 1914 in Detroit, son of the late Frank L. and Edna (Vincent) Willis. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kay and his second wife, Enid (Davis). Frank was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Lexington Lodge #61 F & AM, Lexington O.E.S. Chapter #237, R.A.M. #41, Past Commander Lexington V.F.W. Post #2382, Past President of the Lexington Lions Club, and the Lexington Senior Center. He was an avid golfer. He was the retired owner and operator of Lakeshore Plumbing & Heating. Surviving are three step sons; Ted (Sandy) Davis, Ken Davis all of Argyle and Eric (Cindy) Davis of Lexington, twelve grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by step sons, Larry and Fred Davis. A private service was held with inurnment in Lexington Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Lexington Lions Club. Arrangements are by the Pomeroy Funeral Home, Lexington.

Adams, 89, of Elkhart, Ind., died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Elkhart, Ind., following an extended illness.   She was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Three Rivers, Mich., a duaghter of Carl and Forest Edna (Leeth)Jewell.   She had lived in Elkhart, Ind., since 2006, coming from Union, Mich.   On April 2, 1949, she married Dan A. Adams in Bristol, Ind. He died Dec. 21, 1980.   During her early life she was employed by the telephone company and was a homemaker and sold Avon products. She was a member of Bettany Missionary Church in Elkhart, Ind., and was a children’s Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and cake decorating.   Surviving are a daughter, Karan E. Holt-Hartley of Elkhart, Ind.; a son, Kenneth E. (Pam)Adams of Elkhart, Ind.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold B. Jewell of Lake City, Mich., and Virgil (Annabelle) Jewell of South Bend, Ind.; several nieces and newphes. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, Darl Jewell.   Relatives and friends may call from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Services are at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Dale Turner of Zion Missionary Church in Elkhart, Ind., officiating.   Burial will be in White Pigeon Township Cemetery. Harold "Wayne" Davis Harold "Wayne" Davis, 57, Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at his home. He was born February 11, 1952 in Albertville, Ala., son of Preston and Louise (Smith) Davis. He married Heidi Smith on October 19, 1983 in Caro. Wayne was formerly the co-owner of the Maintainence Machine in Mayville, and was a machinist and supervisor at US Manufacturing in Bad Axe. He enjoyed playing golf. Wayne is survived by his wife, Heidi Davis, Bad Axe; son, Preston (financ e Anne Nizzola) Davis, Bad Axe; daughter, Heidi Davis (financ Richard LaGrandeur), Bad Axe; grandson, Davis LaGrandeur, Bad Axe; parents, Preston and Louise Davis, Summertown, Tenn.; two brothers, Samuel Davis, Summertown, Tenn. and Ronny Davis, Walled Lake; two sisters, Mary (Chuck) Adams, Summertown, Tenn. and Gloria (Steve) Gibbs; father-in-law, Russell Smith, Moorseville, N.C. Terrill,  86, of Hudson, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  Harriet was born on August 23, 1922, in Jackson, Mich., the daughter of John and Ella (Rinehart) Shoemaker.  She married Frank J. Terrill on April 4, 1959, in Vandercook Lake.  He survives.  Harriet was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family.  She enjoyed sewing, crafting and taking care of her family. Harry H. Smurr, 95 of Coldwater, died peacefully on Friday, May 29, 2009 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. Brian Stanley of St. Charles Borromeo Church will officiate. Harry was born Jan. 25, 1914 in Waterloo, Ind. The son Walter and Eunice (Zerkle) Smurr. He married Dorothy Black on Aug. 8, 1936 in Coldwater. She preceded him in death on April 11, 1959. He then married Norma Harvey on Nov. 17, 1961, She preceded him in death on July 7, 1994. Mr. Smurr has been a resident of Branch County for most of his life, attending school in Bronson. He was a longtime employee of Commercial Carriers in Coldwater, then worked for the Branch County Road Commission for many years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Harry especially enjoyed traveling to northern Michigan in the summers and wintering in Bradenton, Fla. He was preceded in death by his brother Roy Smurr. Harry is survived by his sons Leo (Mona) Smurr of Sherwood and David (Ellen) Smurr also of Sherwood, five grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. James A. Kohl 1933-2009 James A. "Jim" Kohl, 75, Pigeon, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 21, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 20, 1933 on a farm in Bad Axe and graduated in 1951 from Bay Port High School. He served with the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean War. He was united in marriage on December 23, 1950 to Lorraine B. Henne in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on June 16, 1998. On February 24, 2001 he married Susan J. Kaplan, who survives him. Jim's first job was making boxes, for five cents each, at the Bay Port Fish Company docks. He retired in 1996 as D.P.W. Supervisor, having worked for the Village of Pigeon for 17 years. He was previously employed at a variety of jobs: construction, service station, Bay Port Elevator, farming and selling agricultural seed. He had also been the Bay Port Constable. He loved his community, serving as Pigeon Village President from 1996-2001, as well as village councilman, where he was currently serving. He enjoyed Laker sports, concerts, and plays. He was an avid supporter of U of M sports, particularly football. He was also a fan of the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings and Frank Sinatra. In his younger years, he enjoyed duck hunting and playing softball. He loved his family and friends. He was a library volunteer who looked forward to taking books to his friends at Country Bay Village. He was an active member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church, where he served as Administrative Council president and sang in the church choir as well as the community chorus. He is survived by his wife, Susan, Pigeon; three daughters, Kristina (David) Dietzel, Houghton Lake, Pamela King, Bad Axe and Cheri (Paul) Garno, Birch Run; two sons, Darin (Lori) Kohl, Reed City and Brian (Tiffanee) Kohl, Bay City; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and his in-laws, Robert and Marietta Tornow, Sun City West, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; two brothers, Orlo and Byron and three sisters, Bessi, Beryl and Shirley. Funeral Services were held Sunday, May 24 at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. Rev. Douglas Mater officiated with burial in New Bay Port Cemetery. James Harold Burtle, 57, of Blissfield passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his home. James was born on Jan. 4, 1952, in Grosse Pointe, Mich., the son of John E. and Ruth L. (Rodems) Burtle. On May 19, 1979, James married the former Christine A. Campbell. She survives. James served his country in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant from 1970 to 1976. He continued to work for the federal government as an emissions control specialist, specializing in testing and technical writing. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and also of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Blissfield. James had a love of sports and was active in earlier years with hockey, golf and dirt bike riding. His favorite pastime was his family. He enjoyed spending as much time with his kids and grandchildren as he could. Surviving are his wife, Christine Burtle of Blissfield; his children, Aimee (Ronald) Fields of New Baltimore, Mich., James Burtle of Washington state, John Burtle of Adrian, Jeffrey Burtle of Grand Rapids, Mich., Joseph Burtle of Blissfield and Jacob Burtle of Blissfield; two grandchildren, Tylor Erdmann and Alysexia Fields; two sisters, Dorothea Winiarski of Shelby Twp., Mich., and Catherine Craig of Illinois; two brothers, John Burtle of East Pointe, Mich., and Robert Burtle of Owosso, Mich.; and last but not least, his beloved dogs, Buster and Ernie. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, David Burtle. Funeral services for James will be held on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield with Pastor Pete Valdez and the Blissfield V.F.W. Post 10912 officiating. Lewis Richard (Dick) Harring passed away at his home in Portage on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Richard was born in Los Angeles on Oct. 1, 1936, to Carl and Mary (Mercer) Harring, and returned to Hillsdale with his family at the age of 4. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1954. He received his Ed.D from Indiana University in 1968 and later that year joined the faculty of Western Michigan University where he served as a professor in department of education until his retirement in 1997. He loved teaching and felt it was the ideal profession. His family, friends and students knew him as a patient listener, superb and demanding teacher and wise counselor. On Nov. 22, 1974, he married Ruth Ann Myrom. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, as well as his sons, Scott (Aime) Harring of Ballwin, Mo. and Jeffrey (Joan) Harring of Ellicott City, Md; five grandchildren, Adam, Emma, Drina, Sophie and Evan; sister, Jan (James) Tesch of Hillsdale; and niece, Jennifer (Jeff) Potter of Temperance. He was preceded in death by his parents. During the past 35 years, Richard was deeply involved in Indian culture and Hindu religious practices and made 20 or more visits to India. He and Ruth worked tirelessly to establish avenues for study and advancement of Indian philosophy, helping to create a Vedantic Center in the Kalamazoo area. A memorial service was held May 21 at the Sambodh Center for Human Excellence in Kalamazoo and was immediately followed by a Hindu Last Rites ceremony and cremation at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek. Eileen was preceded in death by her parents. Lucille was born May 11, 1914 in Casey, Iowa to Charles and Osia Mae (Plummer) Fuqua. She married Dallas Dearth on Sept. 28, 1951 in Detroit. He preceded her in death in 1995. Lucille received her Bachelors Degree in teaching in 1952, and her Masters in special education in 1954 from Wayne State University. Her love of children led her to a career of teaching at Dearborn Township Schools for 27 years, retiring in 1969. She came to Coldwater in 1970, after her retirement. She was a member of Lockwood Community Church, the Retired Teachers Association, Branch County 4-H Fair Association, and a past member of the Coldwater Grange. She enjoyed collecting buttons and was very skilled in quilting, belonging to the ABC Quilts and Evening Star Quilt Clubs. Lucille was active in the Commission on Aging, where she taught crafts. Mrs. Dearth was very instrumental in the establishment of the Dearth Community Center, the Lucille E. Dearth Union City - Branch Library, the HC Burnside Senior Center, the new 4-H Fair Office, the installation of the new Tibbits Cupola and numerous local scholarships. Lucille is survived by her step-son George Dearth of Jackson, her close friends Joe and Maxine Ferry, Ross and Marilyn Byers, Elsie Forrister all of Coldwater, Becky and Terry Knowles of Union City, eight step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Dallas, Lucille was preceded in death by her sister and bother-in-law Helen and Ralph Kerr and an infant brother. Memorials may be directed to the Branch County 4-H Foundation.


 


 

MARVIN MERL WINTER CASS CITY Marvin 'Marv' Merl Winter, age 71, of Cass City, Michigan died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in his home. He was born June 9, 1937 to Merle and Lucille (Rockefeller) Winter in Cass City, Michigan. He graduated from Cass City High School in 1955. Marvin married Janice O'Dell June 20, 1959 in Sutton Methodist Church, Caro. They have celebrated 49 years of marriage. In 1969 Marv went into business for himself establishing Winter's Truck Sales. Winter's Truck Sales sold new and used truck and farm equipment. Marv was still operating the business until his death. In 1975 he established Colony House Catering Hall & Blue Room Bar. The Colony House hosted numerous wedding receptions, concerts, corporate events and various trade shows. It was in operation until 1998. Marv was a member of Cass City Masonic Tyler Lodge #317, Caro Moose Lodge #1049, and Elf Khurafeh Shrine Center, Saginaw. Marv was a NASCAR fan. He loved watching and attending race events. He alsoloved watching the Detroit sports teams: Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. He was an avid card player. Marv had a great love for animals, in particular, his pet goose, Charlie and his pet lion, Sue Ellen that he raised for 14 years. But his real gift was meeting new people and quickly and easily making friends. He truly loved being surrounded by family and friends. Mary was born on July 17, 1937 in Royal Oak to James E. and Dorothy (Sleep) Kotles. She was raised in Royal Oak and graduated from Dondero High School. She married Richard Seyfarth on April 28, 1962. She worked as a dealer accountant for Chevrolet in Warren for 18 years. Mary and her family began vacationing in Coldwater in the early 1970s and moved there permanently in 2003. Mary is survived by her husband, Richard Seyfarth, and sons; James Seyfarth of Coldwater and David Seyfarth of Detroit. Mary Lou Millett, 86, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away May 12, 2009, at Drew’s Place of Coldwater in Coldwater, Mich. She was born July 31, 1922, in Killbuck, Ohio, a daughter to the late Ray and Helen (Pratt) Roach. Mrs. Millett had resided in Sturgis since 1945, coming from Clair and Grand Rapids. On March 13, 1942, she married Dr. J. Earl Millett in Grand Rapids. He died Aug. 9, 1980. Mrs. Millett was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. To say she enjoyed traveling would be an understatement. She traveled all over the world to every continent with the exception of Antarctica. She and her husband’s favorite destination was always Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis and the Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Millett was a talented self-taught artist and especially loved oil and acrylic painting, jewelry making and stained glass. She had taken many art classes at Glen Oaks Community College. Mrs. Millett is survived by five daughters, Pamela Ann (Terry) Johnson of Burr Oak, Mary Candice (Jerry) Suszko of White Pigeon, Cyndi (Tom) Flaherty of Cape Cod, Mass., Dr. Kerri Lou (Dr. John Polzin) Millett of Sturgis and Kelli Sue (Shawn Hinds) Millett of Franklin, Tenn.; one son, Dr. Jeffrey Millett of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren, Jon (Marta) Millett of Chile, South America, David (Pam) Millett of Chicago, Michelle (Matt) Olsen of Vicksburg, Dr. Chris Johnson of Bancroft, Mike Johnson of Sturgis, Dr. Amy (Pete) Suszko-Brown of Frankfort, Ill., Dr. Tim Suszko of Fenton, Taylor Polzin, David Polzin and Matthew Polzin all of Sturgis, Joseph Bourcier, Michael Bourcier and Katy Hinds all of Franklin, Tenn.; identical twin great-granddaughters, Nicole Gabrille and Lauren Elizabeth Millett; one brother, Charles Roach of Roseville, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Michael Dale Kuenzel, 37, of Burr Oak, Mich.,unexpectedly went to be with his Lord and Savior May 27, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 30, 1972, in Three Rivers, Mich., a son to Dale S. and Phyllis (Plank) Kuenzel. Michael’s parents were so blessed to have this special child. He was such a joy although he faces many obstacles in his life. His favorite nickname was “Mit the Kit.” Michael lived in Sturgis most of his life where he attended Sturgis High School, moving to Burr Oak in 2008. He had worked in and around the Sturgis area since he got out of school. Michael’s greatest passion in life was helping other people. He worked at soup kitchens, helping to feed the poor and homeless. He never met a stranger because he would always stop to help someone out. Michael’s happiest times were when he volunteered to help with the Special Olympics and chaperoning as they played different sports around the state. Michael was involved with the Special Olympics for many years. Sometimes renting a court at the Doyle Center so they could practice before the basketball games. He once said, “They gave me more than I could ever give back”. Michael always said his greatest role model was his brother Bryan who played in Special Olympics. Michael had a great love for music, not only listening, but writing songs and often performing in his best friend’s band. Michael had recently started attending Grace Christian Fellowship in Sturgis, saying it felt like home. He touched many lives with his kindness and his very loving and giving heart. Michael is survived by his dad, Dale S. Kuenzel of Burr Oak; his mother and step-father, Phyllis L. and John Dudley of Howe, Ind.; a brother, Bryan Kuenzel of Burr Oak; paternal grandmother, Ruth Holmes of Burr Oak; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Plank of Constantine and several aunts, uncles and cousins. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Michael Dale Kuenzel will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Christian Fellowship, 300 Timothy St., Sturgis, Mich. The Rev. Ross Gerber will officiate. He was born Aug. 4, 1946, in Garden City, Mich., the son of Theophial and Lovetta (Short) Patrias. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marlene (Burton) Patrias whom he married on Oct. 29, 1979; three children, Charles Kidd of Austin, Texas, Michael Patrias, Jr. of Hillsdale, and Heather (Wes) Barns of Hillsdale; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian (Raymond) Pavalak of Lincoln Park and Margot (John) Brooks of Berea, Ky.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Phillip Patrias. Mr. Patrias was employed at Leutheuser’s in Hillsdale in the body shop division where he received Best in Class Awards from General Motors. He was also a past member of the Michigan Street Rod Association. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Michael Lawrence Patrias, Sr. will be at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 1 p.m. Saturday. Steven Vance Peterson, 57, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 22, 1952, in Coldwater to Sigurd and Geraldine (Dressel) Peterson. He was married Feb. 12, 1988 to Margaret Shaffer and she survives. Steven was a former employee of Marquardt L.L.C. of Livonia, and former longtime employee at Allied Products in Hillsdale. He was an avid bowler and former junior bowling coach in Coldwater. He loved the outdoors and was a fisherman and hunter. Survivors include his wife Margaret; daughter, Jo (Mike) Johnson of Kalamazoo; step-sons, Ian Bernard of Quincy and Aaron (Jennifer) Bernard of Osseo; five grandchildren; sisters, Jean (Jerry) Pottenger of Manchester, Ind., and Dawn (David) Wilcox of Quincy; brothers, David Peterson and Eric Peterson, both of Quincy. There will be a memorial vistation for Steven Peterson from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Private family interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom Township at a later date. Virgil F. Parker, 83, a resident of Monroe, MI since 1943, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009, at 2:05 AM in Mercy Memorial Hospital where he had been for the past 10 days. Virgil had been in declining health for the past year.

Virginia Mae Klauka North Branch Virginia Mae Klauka, 80, a lifetime North Branch area resident, passed away Thursday (May 21, 2009). She was born December 10, 1928, in North Branch, to Earl and Alie (Midgely) Porritt. She married Orville Klauka. Mrs. Klauka worked many years for North Branch area schools. She enjoyed quilting and working in her flower gardens. The Iris Garden she had was beautiful. Most importantly, Virginia loved her family, she was dedicated to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Robert (Diana) Klauka of Lapeer and Lorie (JD Munro) Callcut of North Branch; 5 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; brother, Gordon (Mary) Porritt of North Branch. WESLEY MAX NEWLOVE PECK Wesley Max Newlove, age 81, of Peck, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, after a long illness. He was born on June 4, 1927 in Melvin. He married Ruth Moran on December 22, 1979 in Memphis. Max served his country with the United States Army during WWII. He was a lifelong area farmer and was employed by Mueller Brass, Port Huron, for 22 years, L & L of Romeo for ten years and for Bluebird Enterprises until his retirement. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Ruth of 29 years, are one son; Roy (Shannon) Newlove of California, two daughters; Debbie (Carl) Gordon of Croswell, Kathy (Andy) Lewis of Peck, nine grandchildren; Dustin (Cynthia) Newlove of New Jersey, Jonathan (Jessica) Newlove of California, Heather (Dennis) Terpelle of California, Rodney (Christy) Gordon of Croswell, Tracy (Michael) Slack of Comstock Park, Nicole (Theodore) Whitley of Croswell, Tiffany (Matt) Kern of Reese, Jeremy Kipp of Lincoln Park and Scott (Lesa) Lewis of Peck, twenty great-grandchildren with three more coming, two sisters; Jean Hastings and Marie Beadle, both of Port Huron along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Max was preceded in death by his parents; John Wesley Newlove on September 20, 1967 and Wealtha Ada Newlove (Lord) on May 14, 1933 as well as a sister, Leona Quinlan on July 4, 1998. He was bound to the land from the day of his birth, His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth, Nurtured, sustained by the soil he grew, And his life, like furrows ran straight and true. In faith each spring he planted the seeds, In hope to reap his family's needs, With patience he waited for the harvest to come, To gather the fruits of his labor home. Every turning seasons, the years sped past, Til the final harvest came at last, Then claimed anew by beloved sod, He gathered home to be with God. Max will be in his families hearts forever. Always loved, forever missed. Funeral services with the family honoring the memory of Max were held at Kaatz Funeral Home, Yale with Rev. William James Buckley, 80 of Coldwater, died on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the family’s home, located at 481 Dorrance Road in Coldwater with a luncheon to follow. No other services will be held. William was born on Feb. 20, 1929 in Steuben County, Ind. to Martin and Gladys (Lang) Buckley. He married Dorothy Hanson on Feb. 20, 1947. William attended school in the Ft. Wayne area and moved to Branch County when he and Dorothy married. He hauled cars for the Ford Motor Company for over 40 years. He enjoyed woodworking and taking care of his yard. William loved people and was always there when someone needed help. His daughters remember him always fixing the family‚s cars. William is survived by his wife, Dorothy Buckley, his sons; Steven F. Buckley of Coldwater, Gerald A. Buckley of Sylvia, N.C., James C. Buckley of Quincy and Douglas G. (Angelina) Buckley of Belle Fourche, S.D., his daughters; Dale E.(Rob) Janusch of Beulah and Ginger K.(Bill) Acock of Coldwater, his brother, Martin T. Buckley of Coldwater, his sister Sadie Forrister of Coldwater, 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
