Clarey Rita Mae July 22, 1926 - October 1, 2010. Rita's spirit has risen to heaven to meet her God, her husband and eldest son who preceded her in death. Soon she will be a part of a very special and long awaited McCrady Reunion with her parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Her death will bring to close a generation whose memories we will all cherish. Her last days were spent in the peace and comfort of her home in Sparks, Nevada with her daughter Peggy Clarey and son-in-law, Fred Conner. Rita was born at the farm on Pumping Station Road. Fairfield County, Ohio. She grew up in Sugar Grove, Ohio, attended and graduated from Berne Union School in Sugar Grove, Ohio. Rita was the youngest child born to Charles and Rosemary (Shonebarger) McCrady. Rita was married to Wilbert A. Clarey for 56 years before his death in 2006. At that time she moved to Nevada to live with her only daughter. She had four children: Daniel (Linda), Peggy (Fred), Bruce (Alise), and Andrew (Laura). She had six male grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a Nurses Aid at Garden City Osteopathic Hospital for over 20 Years. G.C.O.H. is located less that one block from the family Home on Cardwell Street, Garden City, Michigan. Her interests included playing cards, bingo, casino gambling and creating Jewelry Pictures. With "Web", she became an active and enthusiastic member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, starting in the mid 50's at Johnsons Post #78, on Joy Road in Detroit, Michigan, and ending her service at Battle Born Post #9211 on VFW Historic Lane in Reno, Nevada. She was anointed by Father Norman King from the Immaculate Conception Church. Her remains will be at the Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, Michigan. Instead of flowers or gifts, remembrances can be PAID FORWARD.


 


 

David C. Borsum

David C. Borsum Battle Creek David Charles Borsum, 69, of Battle Creek, died December 26, 2010 at Good Samaritan Hospice Residence from complications due to a train/car accident. He was born June 11, 1941, the second child of Leslie and Thelma (Johnson) Borsum in Omaha, Nebraska. Dave moved with his family to Battle Creek in 1946 and was a graduate of Lakeview High School, attended Michigan Technological University and received an Associates degree from Kellogg Community College. Following college he continued to work for the Kellogg Company in a variety of positions and after 38 years of service, Dave retired as Manager, Logistics Support Systems and Inventory Control, Kellogg's, North America. During his work years for Kellogg's he was highly involved with the United Way and was a great advocate for sharing the wealth of the community for the benefit of all. In 1996 Dave became a founding partner of Quality Learning Systems International (QLSI), a company focused on evaluation and assessment of education, health care and business organizations; teaching cognitive thinking skills and materials distribution. During his retirement years he was able to lend leadership and management support to leaders in a number of countries serviced by QLSI. He is remembered by people in many communities for his great generosity and giving nature. Dave is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda (Jarchow) Borsum of Battle Creek; daughter, Leslie (Dean) Morton of Boulder, Colorado; brother, Jack (Marjorie) Borsum of Plantation, Florida; nephews, Tom Borsum and his wife, Jackie and their children, Scott and Janelle Borsum and Mike Borsum and his wife, Lynn and their children, Amanda and Stephanie Borsum. Many of David's family members live in the Reed City area where he spent summers working on the Joe Patterson farm. He always felt this time on the farm helped him to appreciate the values of rural community life. Dave was a member of and served on the Board of Directors of the National Management Association for eight years; a member of, and a Paul Harris Fellow, he also worked on Polio eradication (Polio Plus) in India; a member of the Battle Creek Country Club; a passionate advocate of the Second Amendment rights and a life member of the NRA; and enjoyed hunting, reading, and extensive world travel. Throughout his life he made family first and extended his friendship and help to many in need. His support for others never waivered as he faced a variety of health issues in the past few years. Donald E. Atzman, Sr. Battle Creek Donald E. Atzman, Sr., 79, of Battle Creek died Thursday, December 23, 2010. He was born in Tekonsha, Michigan on July 23, 1931 and was the son of Peter and Mildred (Case) Atzman. Donald retired in 1983 from Clark Equipment Co. as an electrician after more than 22 years of faithful service. After his retirement, Donald worked for many years at Quality Farm & Fleet and Lifespan Hospice. Donald married Violet Louise Verga in 1950; she preceded him in death on May 28, 1999. He is survived by his children, Marilou (Jerry) Chappell of Georgia, Donald E. Atzman, Jr., of Battle Creek and Tina (Douglas) Strong of Georgia; 6 grandchildren, 7½great-grandchildren; and a brother, Peter (Carol) Atzman of Colorado. Donald was also preceded in death by his parents. Donald was a member of the Burnham Brook Center, the Clark Equipment Retirees and was a longtime member of the BL 700's bowling team. He enjoyed bowling, computers, painting, shopping and ballroom dancing. A lover of the outdoors, Donald also enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson, boating, fishing, golfing, travelling and spending time with his family. George Louis Armstrong

George Louis Armstrong George Louis Armstrong passed away December 27, 2010 at his home. He was born August 18, 1936 in Detroit Michigan to Irene Jenkins Armstrong and George Lewis Armstrong. He was the youngest male of seven children. He served in the US Air Force as an Airman First Class. He began his civilian career in 1958 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Battle Creek from where he retired after 36 years of service. He then worked for the State of Michigan as a School Bus Driver for 17 years. His hobbies were painting and gambling. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Margaret Armstrong; three children, Josita Todd, Wyman Armstrong and Waymon Armstrong; seven grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. All of George Armstrong's siblings and parents are deceased. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. She had been employed as a secretary for State Farm Insurance (Fire Company) in Marshall, MI; then Century Housewares; then for three years for Top-Kut Meats; Buckenberger Insurance Company for twelve and half years; then a clerk at Budget Self Storage and a cashier/stocker Whitt's Party Store. She married James L. Brinkert in Battle Creek, MI on July 8, 1978; however he passed away in May of 2008. She is survived by her daughter: Karen M. (Rob) Howes of Battle Creek, MI; two sons: Brian E. (Kathy) Eib of Ft. Wayne, IN, and Larry L. (Missy) Eib of Springfield, MI; two step-daughters: Mary L. (Todd) Boshers of Battle Creek, and Karen L. (Mike) Kragt of Portage, MI; step-son: Mark W. Gerry graduated from Marshall High School in 1959.Gerry had been a resident of Springfield since 1963. Gerry served as treasurer of the newly formed Springfield Community Foundation. She was a member of the 100 Million Dollar Club with the Battle Creek Shriners; she was a member of the Bunco Club for many years and an auxiliary member of the Battle Creek Commandery #33 where she was elected President in 2005. In her free time she enjoyed her indoor plants and gardening during the summer, spending time with her grandchildren, collecting paper napkins, small state commemorative spoons and plates, currency coins and a souvenir from each of the hot air balloon festivals through the years. She loved taking family photos and pictures of different events. She loved garage saleing and "Zoey", her miniature-pincher. Visitation will be held Wednesday after 9 a.m., December 29, 2010 at the Bachman Hebble Funeral Service where the family will be present from 1-4:00 p.m. and 6-8:00 p.m. Funeral services commemorating the life of Geraldine Brinkert will be held Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Bachman Funeral Chapel with Pastor Mona Joslyn of Gull Lake United Methodist Church officiating. The oldest of five children, Rob loved to spend summers up north with family and friends. Summers were spent fishing and roaming the woods and fields of our beautiful state. Rob graduated from Oakland University and then the National College of Chiropractic in Illinois. He worked first as an associate of George Goodheart, founder of Applied Kinesiology and later practiced privately in Birmingham for 25 years. His ability to reach bodies, hearts and minds was legendary. Rob was gifted at articulating the pilgrimage towards consciousness. Rob was the enthusiastic president of Kirkwood Lake Association for 20 years. Rob loved to fish with his brothers and friends on the beautiful Michigan waterways. All those who knew Rob knew he was the facilitator of fun and joy and true engagement in life. Survived by beloved wife Lynn and daughters Sarah and Alyssa. Doris graduated in 1938 from Vestaburg High School, was a member of Catholic Community of St. Jude, Saint Elizabeth Seaton Circle of the Altar Society and the Busy Bee Club. Doris thoroughly enjoyed life and loved her many friends. Noted as a "great" baker, Doris won many ribbons at fairs, and was known as the "pie lady" in DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd in 1986; grandson, Dale in 1988; son, Mickey in 2002; brother, Dale "Rich" Welch; and special friend, LeRoy "The Kid" Miller.
