Ken Scholten, age 54, of Holland, passed away  Tuesday, October 20, 2009, at Holland Hospital. Ken was born November 15, 1954 to Robert and Eleanor Scholten, now deceased. Ken is survived by his sisters, Mary Ellen and David Minaar of Gun Lake and Melanie and A.C. Vander Kolk of Holland; brothers, Robb Scholten of Boston and Tom and Sally Scholten of Holland; as well as his cousins, nieces, nephews, and housemates.   At a time when children born with Down Syndrome were sent off to state institutions, Ken lived with and was raised by his loving family. At the same time, Ken's parents worked with other families to establish a network of services to enhance the lives of their special needs children. From the beginning of his life to the end, Ken was a pioneer. At a time when there were no educational programs for disabled children, Ken was fortunate to be one of the first students enrolled at Prestaatie Huis, a parent-sponsored school which predated the Ottawa Area Center. Ken then attended the Ottawa Area Center from which he graduated when he was 26 years old. At a time when no opportunities existed for adults to live in family-oriented group homes for the developmentally disabled, Ken moved into the first such facility in West Michigan-Heritage Homes of Zeeland. At a time when the mentally challenged were considered unemployable, Ken started working in the community.  From an early position as a janitor for Zeeland Christian Schools to his most recent task scanning medical documents for Ottawa County, Ken enjoyed being productive.  His aptitude for operating electrical and mechanical equipment showed in his unofficial jobs such as running the projector at Special Ed Ministries and helping in the laundry at Ottawa Area Center. Ken was enriched by his love of the Lord, his worship and fellowship at Grace Episcopal Church, and his huge extended family of caregivers at Heritage Homes and the staff of Community Mental Health. His playful spirit and endless teasing of those he loved most will be greatly missed by those who loved him back. We find peace and joy in his eternal rest with his loving heavenly Father. Psalm 91, vs 1-2. NIV Funeral services are planned for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 24, at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave., with Rev. Jennifer Adams officiating. Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Heritage Homes, 400 136th Ave., Building 200, Suite 205, Holland, MI 49424.
