Alice Eleanor Mae Manley, nee Everlove, age 77, of Tecumseh, passed away late Monday evening, Dec. 1, 2008, at Provincial House of Adrian, where she had been a resident for about a year. Alice was an inspirational, life-long optimist who fought a courageous 15-year battle against serious medical problems that would have defeated a lesser spirit. Alice was born on Feb. 25, 1931, in Ypsilanti, Mich., the only daughter of Bernhard and Eleanor Renton Everlove. Her father was a gifted foundry engineer who was highly respected for his innovative work with aluminum mold and sand castings. Her mother was a life-long businesswoman, who excelled in retailing and was well known in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor as the manager of the children’s department at Jacobson’s.  During the Great Depression, when Alice was a baby, her father moved the family to Bermuda in hopes of finding work. He found a job in retail and was a correspondent for the Royal Gazette & Colonist Daily newspaper. Her mother owned and managed a guest house in Somerset, Bermuda. Two brothers, Thomas and Victor were born on the island.  The Everlove children enjoyed an idyllic childhood. Alice’s children and grandchildren loved to hear her tell stories about the family’s life in Bermuda. She had a special gift for telling these stories  In 1985, she visited Bermuda with her daughters, Mary and Vickie, who were privileged to visit all the places described in the stories and to meet some of their mother’s childhood friends. In 1942, the Everlove family returned to the states so that Alice’s father could resume his career as a foundry man. The family settled in the Detroit area, eventually moving to Tecumseh when Alice was in high school. At Tecumseh High School, Alice met her soul mate and the great love of her life, Charles Manley. They were married on Aug. 26, 1948, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tecumseh. This past August, Alice and Charlie celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.  Charlie unexpectedly died on Sept. 29, 2008. Alice never fully recovered from this great loss. Alice was a loving wife and gifted homemaker but her greatest talent was motherhood. Together, she and Charlie raised three girls, two boys and a grandson. Alice raised each one of her children to be strong, independent, confident individuals. She took great pride in each of her children’s unique personalities and different successes. Her hard work as a mother of six was rewarded with the gift of six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Following the birth of her three youngest children, Alice also worked outside of the home. She began as an Avon lady, was the assistant manager at the Tecumseh Products cafeteria and retired as a cashier at the Kroger store. Her beautiful smile and genuine interest in people helped her form long-lasting friendships with her colleagues and customers. People were often willing to stand in long lines to go through her check-out station. The last year of Alice’s life was challenging for her and her family. The family is deeply indebted to the skilled, kind and caring employees of the Provincial House of Adrian who helped Alice maintain her dignity and quality of life. They patiently met her needs with genuine, professional care. The family also would like to acknowledge the comfort that Alice and the family received from the Hospice of Lenawee during the last week of her life. Alice is survived by her five children, Victoria Manley of Naperville, Ill., Kathryn Manley of Grand Rapids, Mich., James (Erva) Manley of Tecumseh, Mary (Bryan) Koebbe of Adrian, Robert Manley of Tecumseh and the grandson she raised, Richard Manley (Patti) of Sycamore, Ill. Other survivors include her half brother, Edsell Page (Maxine) of Prescott, Ariz.; brother Thomas Everlove (Lillian) of  Grosse Ile, Mich.; grandchildren, Maryalice Nick, Charles (Chuck) Manley, Michael Koebbe, William Koebbe, Brian Manley and Rennea Turner; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother  Victor Everlove. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6. 2008, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, Tecumseh, with Rev. Robin Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lenawee, 415 Mill Road, Adrian, MI 49221. Condolences to the family may be made online at  www.pursefuneralhome.com. |

Terry Reisch, Ph.D., age 49, Professor of German at Hillsdale College, died on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 after a brief, intense struggle with cancer. He was at home under Hospice care at the time of his passing with family and friends at his side. Dr. Reisch was born Oct. 1, 1959 in Reading, Pa. to Marlene (Showalter) Reisch and Martin L. Reisch, who both survive their son.  After graduation from Wilson High School in West Lawn, Pa. he went on to receive his B.S. in Education, German and French from Millersville State University in 1981, his M.A. in German from Penn State University in 1984, and his Ph.D. in German from State University of New York-Albany in 1992.  His educational experience before coming to Hillsdale College also included a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship in Braunshweig, Germany in 1983 and a Lectureship in Germany at the University of Wurzburg in 1986. From 1988 until his death Dr. Reisch taught in the German department at Hillsdale College and will be remembered by his students as a fine teacher and engaging personality. Highlights of his teaching career, which receive special praise from students, were summer sessions in the German department's overseas program and seminars on Holocaust literature. Exile and Holocaust studies were Dr. Reisch’s areas of academic specialization and along with his scholarly articles and presentations is his recently published book, Hitler’s Hostages, co-authored with Charles E. Harrar, which concentrates on the degradation of Germans under the Nazi regime. In recognition of his many contributions to the College, Dr. Reisch was promoted to full professor during his illness. Colleagues will sorely miss Professor Reisch and especially telling will be the absence of his quick and acerbic wit. Terry Reisch married Maria (Moreno-Perez) in 1983 and their son Sebastian was born in 1991. The clever, rather reserved German boy from western Pennsylvania and the sharp, feisty Cubana from New York City, a pair straight out of central casting for the opposites attract marriage, as most young academic couples, had their share of moving in their early days until Terry received his post at Hillsdale. They set up their final home in Hillsdale on Broad Street in 1994. Terry's hobbies included house renovation, woodworking, NASCAR and the odd round of golf. The family's energies had the last few years been focused on the fortunes of the Hillsdale High School cross-country team of which Sebastian was a member.  Terry, a cross-country runner himself, was an avid supporter of the team and was cheered in his illness by its great success this year. He was particularly proud of the team’s character and the friendships he made through his association with coaches, runners and other team supporters were of the utmost importance to him. Other than his parents, wife and son, Terry is survived by his sister, Bonnie (Reisch) Bunce and her husband David Bunce of Naples, Fla.; along with their children, William E. Bunce II and Jonathan T. Bunce; nephews, Richard Reisch of Bernville, Pa., Edward J. McGlone III of Long Island, N.Y., Louis A. Marinaro of Westchester, N.Y.; and great-niece, Averi Reisch of Bernville, Pa.  Terry was preceded in death by his older brother, Martin T. Reisch in 2000. A memorial service for Terry Reisch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Markel Auditorium located in the Sage Center on the Hillsdale College campus. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial donations in Terry Reisch’s name may be directed to Hillsdale Hospice, to whose members the Reisch family wishes to express its profound gratitude, or to a charity of one's choice.
