Alvin Ray Laarman, age 82, of Holland, went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, December 5, 2008. He was born, raised, and lived his entire life on the north side of Holland.  He worked at Zeeland Feed Mills for many years, and also ran a family farm.  He drove a bus for Holland Public Schools Head Start program and the  MAX bus.  He was a long time volunteer and camper at Cran-Hill Ranch in Big Rapids.  He was an Ottawa County Sheriff reserve, and part of the Ottawa County Sheriff Horse Posse.  He was a leader and volunteer with the Ottawa County 4-H Club and was a member of North Holland Reformed Church where he served on consistory, youth ministries, and the Mission Action Group.   He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Jerene (Slagh) Laarman in March of 2008; granddaughter, Melissa Laarman; and three great-grandsons, Zachary, Isaac, and Jacob Den Bleyker. His family includes his children, Gary and Pam Laarman, Erv and Linda Laarman, Wayne and Debbie Laarman, Ed and Deb Laarman, Lonna and Dave DePree, and Al and Joan Laarman, all of the Holland area; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ann Ortman, and Dorothy; brother-in-law, Chester DeFrell; several in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins. Visiting will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday, December 8, 2008 at the Northwood Chapel-Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home, 295 Douglas Ave., Holland,  and the hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Anna M. Fougerousse, 87, of Reading, passed away Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at her home. She was born in Monterrey, Mexico on Oct. 12, 1921 and her mother was Anna Their. She was married Oct. 9, 1940 to William Fougerousse and he survives. Anna and Bill moved to the Hillsdale area in 1963, prior to that they resided in Dearborn. Anna was a member of the Army Air Force, a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women at the church. Surviving besides her husband Bill of 68 years are two daughters, Donna (Guy) Hinman of Angola and Dianne (Paul) Sonnenberg of Austin, Texas; a son, David (Sharon) Fougerousse of Niles, Michigan; five grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother. A mass of Christian burial for Anna Fougerousse will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with the Rev. Ioane Sigarara as celebrant. Interment will follow at King Lake Cemetery in Hillsdale. There will be a prayer vigil service at 6 p.m. Monday with visitation to follow until 8 p.m., at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Anna Swaney, 86, of Reading, passed away Friday Nov. 28, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility where she had spent the last four months. Born Oct. 1, 1922, in Ohio, she was the daughter of Anthony and Mary (Behlek) Pavka. Anna graduated from Montgomery High School in 1942 and had worked at Weatherhead Co. at one time. She was also a beautician and a talented homemaker who will be remembered as a good cook. Her hobbies included a love of flowers, bowling on a league, golfing and playing cards. She also belonged to a charitable group in Elkhart, Ind., who provided toys and other items for local hospitals. Survivors include her husband, Paul Swaney, whom she married May 16, 1942; two sisters, Josephine Williams and Mildred Gripman, both of Montgomery; three brothers, George (June) Pavka, Kendallville, Ind.,  Joseph (Betty) Pavka, Reading and William (Laura) Pavka, Hillsdale. Preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, (John) and one sister, (Mary). A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with the Rev. Alan Fenstermaker officiating. Visitation is scheduled Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service. Interment in California Corners Cemetery will take place at a later date.  Memorials are suggested to the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. |

Clare J. Slank, 83, of Hillsdale, and former Detroit and Litchfield area resident, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility of the Hillsdale Community Health Center.  She was born Nov. 18, 1925, in Detroit to Joseph and Katherine (Jastremski) Crumb and was a school teacher in the Detroit area. Clare was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, a teacher’s aide at the Litchfield Community Schools, as well as a substitute teacher there for several years. In 1947, she married Norbert Slank and he preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by a daughter, Noreen Slank, Huntington Woods; sons Norbert C. (Carol) Slank, Livonia and Thomas Slank, Clinton; a sister, Joan Mueller,  Hillsdale; a  brother, Leon Crumb, Douglas and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday,at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Hillsdale, with the Rev. Ioanne Sigarara officiating. Interment will follow in St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery. Born September 30, 1922 passed away in peace on December 3, 2008 with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. Born to Harry and Bessie Showalter, Betty grew up in Kansas City, MO and St. Paul, IN. She was predeceased by her husband of 44 years, Robert E. Dix, and her granddaughter, Jill Parker. Betty leaves three daughters: Judy (Mayne) Parker of Arkansas, Nancy (Ron) Tinsley of Oregon, and Janice (Jim) Boyle of Vermont. Grandchildren include: Craig Parker (Laurie) of Texas, Jazmin Tinsley of Maui, Taj Tinsley of Oregon, and Ryan Dix of Massachusetts. Great grandchildren are Paige and Will Parker of Texas. She is survived by her sister, Harriet (Bill) Martin, of Indiana. Betty's life is a testament to her loving, caring, and independent spirit. A devoted wife and mother, Betty's other devotions included piano teacher, bridge player, and Master Gardener. She was a member of the Dearborn Garden Club for 40 years. She marveled others with her beautiful singing voice and sang in church choirs for over 70 years. Betty enjoyed traveling and continually gave her love, thoughtfulness, humor, and radiant smile to her family and many friends. Her ability to listen, and to have only positive things to say about others were her most treasured gifts. Betty truly made everyone around her feel special. The family extends loving gratitude to her friends, caregivers, and Odyssey Hospice team who enabled her to remain at home which was her wish. A Service of Celebration of Betty will be held in the spring with the beautiful flowers and green of the season. Mr. Edwin Verne Fredlund, 83, of Muskegon, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, in Muskegon. He was born Sept. 10, 1925, in Escanaba, to Lawrence and Gladys (Sleeman) Fredlund. Mr. Fredlund married the former Alice Marjorie Sprague on June 25, 1949, in Litchfield. She preceded him in death on March 28, 2008. Verne was employed as an educator and administrator for Hillsdale Community Schools for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1981. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Verne was a member of First United Methodist Church and was also a member of the American Legion and served on the YMCA Board. Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie A. (Ronn) Nelson of Whitehall and Lorrie L. Wilken of Grand Rapids; one son, Eric V. (Martha) Fredlund of Warren;  nine grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Heather, Ian, Emilie, Allison, Jeff, Abbie, Matt and Katie Alice; two great-granddaughters, Hayley Hutchins and Cora Nelson; three brothers, Bob (Madeleine) Fredlund of Bellevue, Neb., Jim (Lockey) Fredlund of Grayling and Vic (Rosie) Fredlund of Tumwater, Wash.  A COMBINED MEMORIAL SERVICE for both Verne and Alice will be held at a later date. Emma “June” Carr, 88, of rural Sherwood, Mich., went home peacefully on Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater after a short illness.  June was born Sept. 12, 1920, in Sherwood Township, a daughter of the late Pearl and Ethel (Durfee) Jackson. She graduated from Colon High School with the class of 1939 and later attended Michigan State University.  On Sept. 27, 1940, she married William A. Carr in Defiance, Ohio.  He preceded her in death on April 1, 2003.  In 1946 June and William purchased the Carr Family Farm and had made it their lifelong home.  She was a homemaker and enjoyed all sorts of hobbies, including painting and most recently spinning wool.  Most important were her friends and family, especially at Christmas time.  June had attended the Athens United Methodist Church.  Surviving are five sons, Roger W. Carr of Colon, Robert R. (Ginger) Carr of Battle Creek, David H. (Kay) Carr of Sherwood, Terry L. (Cheryl) Carr of Sherwood and Michael J. Carr of Sherwood; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas L. Carr in 1982; a grandson, Scott D. Carr in 1986; and three brothers, Leon, Lewis and Wayne Jackson.  The Family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Emma (June) Carr will be at 11 a.m. Thursday from the funeral home with  Pastor Sandy J. Gastian of the Athens United Methodist Church and Rev. David Porter of the Colon Church of Christ officiating.  Burial will follow at Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens. Floyd J. Van Den Beldt, age 88, of Overisel, died Friday, December 5, 2008, at Heritage Health Care Facility.  Floyd was born in Vriesland.  He was a dairy farmer for his entire life.  He also worked for Holland Furnace for 22 years and for Bil-Mar Farms.  A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served during World War II (1942-1946). He was a member of Overisel Reformed Church.  Preceding him in death were three grandchildren, John Hindert, Melissa Hindert, and Christina Borgman.  Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Anna Bell Van Den Beldt, of Overisel; children, Jerry and Karen Van Den Beldt of Fennville, Linda and Al Morrow of Holland, Bonnie and Paul Weikert of Spring Lake, Dale and Laurie Van Den Beldt of Holland, Mary and Bill Nykamp of Overisel, Lee and Sharon Van Den Beldt of Holland, Joyce and Tony Santora, of Hamilton, Al and Patti Van Den Beldt of Overisel; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren;  sisters and brother, Mildred Shidler, Jeanette and Bernie Kool, and Mike Van Den Beldt; in-laws, Lorraine Van Den Beldt, Alma Van Den Beldt, Jason and Esther Ebels, Pauline Rouwhorst, Bernard and Jean Ebels, Donald and Nancy Ebels, Maxine and Junior Hop, Mary Ebels, and Robert and Marilyn Ebels; nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, 2:00 p.m. at the Overisel Reformed Church.  Officiating will be  Rev. George W. Knickerbocker, 76, of Clark Lake, passed away on Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Battle Creek Health System in Battle Creek. He was born on March 29, 1932 in Michigan Center to Elden L. and Bernice Florence (Prine) Knickerbocker. He married Opal Charlene Stiverson on May 2, 1953 in Wheatland Township and she survives. George was raised in the Michigan Center and Springport area.  He lived the past 53 years at Clark Lake. He graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1953–55.  He graduated from the National Radio Institute in Washington D.C.  George was employed as a machinist at Clark Equipment in Jackson for 30 years, retiring in 1981.  He also was a TV repairman for more than 50 years.  He was a member of the Heart O’Lakes United Brethren In Christ Church in Brooklyn and the AARP. George enjoyed moped riding, traveling with his family, gardening, jigsaw woodworking and ushering in church.  He was also an artist of cartoon characters. Surviving besides his wife are one son, Roger (Deborah) Knickerbocker of Parma; one daughter, Helen (Efren) Paredes of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Nicki (Mitch) Taylor and Taryn (Michael) Barlow; two great-grandchildren, Jessica and Briana Wandel; one brother, Elden R. “Nick” (Shirley) Knickerbocker of Eaton Rapids; sister-in-laws, Joyce Foster of Addison, Naomi Underhill of Tuscon, Ariz.; nephews, nieces and cousins.  His parents and two grandchildren, Gary Wandel and Jeremy Knickerbocker, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Heart O’Lakes United Brethren In Christ Church in Brooklyn with Pastor Milan Maybee officiating.  Burial will take place at Norvell Cemetery, in Norvell Township in Jackson County. He married Rosemary L. Dennis on Sept. 24, 1983, in Toledo, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1991. John lived in the Manitou Beach area since 1978. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1959. He worked for the Ford Motor Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1993. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Army.  John was a member of the Morenci American Legion, Post #0368 and a member of AA for 13 years. He enjoyed going to auctions and woodworking. John is survived by his children, Renate Anderson of Michigan Center, Alana (John) Wiegand of Newport, Jack (Kim) Garland of Chelsea, and Jolene Garland of Adrian; six grandchildren; one sister, Sharon DeJonghe of Dundee; and several nephews and nieces. On March 28, 1953, he was married to Ardith Kearns, and she survives. John was an automotive engineer at General Motors for many years, retiring in 1992. After retiring from GM, he went to work for the E.P.A. He enjoyed golfing,  woodworking and tinkering on cars. Larry J. Borchardt, 64, of Pittsford, passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at his home. He was born May 2, 1944 in Toledo, Ohio to Ernest and Helen (Stibbe) Borchardt. He was married July 10, 1971 to Penny Wilson and she survives. Larry retired from GM’s Delphi Plant in Adrian after 31 years of service. He has resided the majority of his life in the Pittsford area and grew up near Bedford. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era. He is a  member of the Hillsdale American Legion and the UAW. Surviving besides his wife Penny are two children, LaWanda Jo Borchardt of Adrian and Waylon Borchardt of Pittsford; two grandchildren, Elizabeth and Gracie Bosquez; a sister, Lela (Paul) Silwester of Ottawa Lake; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Donald and sister Ruth. Lorraine Evelyn Schimke, 85, of Manistee and previously of Coldwater, died Monday morning, Nov. 17, 2008 in Manistee.  She was born May 16, 1923 in Chief, the daughter of Emil and Anna (Meister) Christenson. She met Marvin Schimke at the First Street Beach skating rink, and several years later, they married in Onekama on Feb. 15, 1941. They lived in Chief, Muskegon and Los Angeles, Calif. before settling in Coldwater in 1952, where they lived and worked until returning “up north” about 1987. While living in Coldwater, she worked for the State of Michigan at the Coldwater State Home until retirement. Both Trinity Lutheran (Onekama) and St. Paul’s Lutheran (Coldwater) have been her church homes, as well as Zion Lutheran in Fort Myers, Fla. She was an accomplished seamstress from an early age and an excellent cook. She was also talented at gardening, needlework, painting and many artistic crafts. She was proud of her family and especially enjoyed having grandchildren. Survivors include daughters Carol Schimke of Manistee and Janice (David) Erts of Coldwater; grandchildren Nancy (Gary) Misner of Wyoming, Mich., and children Rachel and Elise; Matthew (Tina) Erts of Gretna, La., and children Evan and Kirstin; and Stephen (Rheta) Erts of Sturgis; brother-in-law Gene Hurrell, also of Coldwater; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Marvin and sister Joyce Hurrell. The funeral, with Pastor Ainslie Wagner officiating, was held Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Onekama. Burial followed in the Onekama Village Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Trinity Lutheran Church (Annex Fund), Hospice of Michigan, or the Salvation Army. Envelopes may be sent in care of the funeral home. Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. Marjorie H. Dock, 87, of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Dec. 5, 2008, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Sept., 17, 1921 in Shipshewana, Ind., to Charles H. and Bessie (Rising) Penn. Marjorie was a nurses aide at Three Rivers Hospital for 16 years. She lived and worked for many years in Villa Park, Ill. She was an accountant for Robert Hall and Ovaltine. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church. Marjorie is survived by a daughter, Sandra L. (Donald) Rentfrow of Kalamazoo; a son, James (Beverly) Dock of Kentfield, California; a son-in-law, Harold A. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Lupe was born on September 5, 1935 in Gonzales, Texas to Guadalupe and Crecencia Moreno Valdez. Lupe proudly served his country in the United States Army. William “Bill” H. Phelps, age 63, of Irons, formerly of Holland died Thursday December 4, 2008 after a car accident in Grand Rapids. Wyla Brown, 79, of Adrian and formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at her home. She was born Aug. 18, 1929, in Adrian, to Vern and Pearl (Shewman) Carr. She married Donald L. Brown Oct. 18, 1947, in Adrian, and he preceded her in death April 15, 1986. Wyla worked at many places and was most recently employed at Kustom Fit in Pioneer, Ohio and Fairway in Hillsdale. She was a very lucky avid bingo player and was always willing to help her family and friends. Zora E. Pyne, 84, of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility. She was born Sept.1, 1924 in Scipio Township to Edward and Christena (Dow) Smith. She was first married to Keith Flint, he preceded her in death. She later married Henry Pyne and he preceded her in death in 1993. Surviving are three daughters, Beverly Peiffer of Sarasota, Fla., Ruth (Larry) Merillat of Osseo and Linda Compton of Osseo and her companion Andy Welden of Jonesville; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a brother, Rex (Jere) Smith of Osseo. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two sisters and three brothers. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Interment will take place at a later date at Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams.
