Alfred John Freisem, Jr.

Alfred John Freisem, Jr., age 86, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2009, at Tendercare of Adrian. He was born March 9, 1923, in Clifton Springs, N.Y., to Alfred and Myra (Hanna) Freisem, Sr. On June 20, 1948, he married Norma Jean Horrom in Bloomington, Ill. She preceded him in death on November 22, 1980. He was raised in the beautiful Finger Lakes area of upstate New York, graduating from Geneva High School in 1941. He attended Alfred University receiving a two-year certificate from that Agricultural and Technical Institute in 1943. He also graduated from the Commercial Trades Institute in Bloomington, Ill., that year. Alfred served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the European Theatre of Operations and was honorably discharged in 1945. Following his military service he attended Michigan State University, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Dairy Technology in 1950. He joined Michigan Producers Dairy Company in 1950, serving in varied capacities through the years and was appointed General Manager of that organization in 1960. He retired in 1987. His service to the dairy industry in Michigan and nationally was many faceted. Alfred served on committees of the National Milk Producers Federation, was a Director of the American Dry Milk Institute and the Michigan Dairy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation, and was President of the Dairy Council of Michigan. He received the Dairy Manufacturers Award from Michigan State University in 1971. Service to his community was not dwarfed by his many industry contributions. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Adrian Rotary Club, President’s Advisory Board of Siena Heights College, Board of Directors of the Bank of Lenawee and was an Elder of the Presbyterian Church. This is a partial list of Alfred’s activities and accomplishments throughout the years. In view of these and other things he did for Michigan Producers Dairy Company, the Board of Directors unanimously voted to establish a scholarship in his honor with the Michigan Dairy Memorial and Scholarship Foundation at Michigan State University. Alfred is survived by two daughters, Carol (Neil) Van Fleet of Ligonier, Ind., and Donna (Michael) Byrd of Adrian; two sisters, Frances Moll of Clemson, S.C., and Winifred Pheteplace of Exeter, N.H.; four grandchildren, J. Scott (Michelle) Byrd of New Britain, Conn., Alyssa (Christopher) Gorski of Blissfield, Christopher (Jennifer) Van Fleet of Goshen, Ind., and Elyse Van Fleet of Muncie, Ind. In addition to his wife, Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister. Funeral services for Alfred will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery with full Military Rites conducted by the V.F.W. Annis-Fint Post #1584. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. CARL L. MILLER MARLETTE Carl L. Miller, age 76, a life long resident of Marlette passed away, Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at Marlette Regional Hospital. He was born January 5, 1933 in Juhl, son of the late John and Eleanora (Aagaard) Miller. Carl graduated from Marlette High School in 1951. He married Verna M. Barnes August 8, 1953 in Marlette. She preceded him in death March 15, 1993. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War with an Engineering Company as a mechanic. He worked 30 years for General Motors, retiring in 1995. Carl was a life long member of the Marlette V.F.W. and also a member of the Moose Lodge in Mio. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, playing cards & horse shoes and most of all, his friends and family. He is survived by two daughters, Diane (Robert) Marcotte, Debra (Gregg) Ciurla both of Marlette; one son, Craig Miller of Rochester; one sister, Marion Nowaske of Southgate; special friend, Mary Keys of Sandusky; grandchildren, Lance, Jena & Lauren Ciurla and Donald & Connor Thomas. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Verna, daughter, Cheryl Thomas and brother, John Miller. Calvin B. Abdon 1925-2009 Calvin Ballard "C.B." Abdon, 83, Port Austin, passed away Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born in Lexington, Kentucky on October 9, 1925, son of the late Fred and Marie (Ballard) Abdon. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in Texas, Oklahoma and California. On April 18, 1955 he was united in marriage to Amy Anna Brateljanovich. She preceded him in death on June 24, 2006. C.B. retired in 1983 after 25 years of employment with Allied Supermarkets. He was a Detroit Tiger fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by a daughter, Norma Jean (Richard) Hemauer, Pigeon; two grandchildren, Samantha and Ryan; a half brother, Fred (Betty) Abdon; a niece and great-nephews and many dear friends and neighbors. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Chaplain Joseph Atchinson from Heartland Hospice officiated. Carolyn R. Townsend, age 83 of Wheatland Township, Pittsford, passed away on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. She was born on Oct. 2, 1925, in Memphis, Tenn. to Oswald and Cornelia (Ellis) Kuney. She married LaVere W. Townsend on May 30, 1956, in Addison, and he passed away on May 13, 1999. Carolyn lived part of her early life in Addison and then she lived in San Diego, Calif. She then moved to the Hudson-Addison area and then to the Pittsford area for the past 50 years. She wintered in Webster, Fla.  Carolyn graduated from Addison High School in 1943.  She worked as “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II in San Diego.  She then worked at the Addison Telephone Co., Addison Products and Wolfe’s Cottage Inn Restaurant in Addison. She then was a cook at Addison High School. She was a former member of the Addison United Church, member of the Order of Eastern Star Lodge #217 of Addison, where she was past worthy matron, member of the Wheatland Congregational Church, the Addison Women’s Club, the Addison, Hudson, Hillsdale Senior Citizens Center, the Happy Campers Club of Hillsdale County, the Coachmen Club of Hillsdale County and the Red Hat Society. Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Dianne Bradstreet of St. Joseph, Carol J. (William) Inhulsen of Brownstown; one granddaughter, Barb (Ken) Michelini of West Bloomfield Hills; one great-granddaughter, Allison; one great-grandson, Logan; one step-son, William (Joyce) Townsend of Portugal; two step-daughters; Alice Cooley, Sharon Lemons of Saugatuck, 10 step-grandchildren, one sister, Connie Potter of Memphis, Tenn., one brother, Jack (Kathy) Craddock of St. Louis, Mo.; three nephews; and one niece.  She was preceded in death by her husband, LaVere; and one son Terry Lynn. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with the Rev. Clyde L. Wonders officiating. Connie G. Roe, age 58, of Clinton passed away June 26, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center.  Connie was born April 19, 1951, in Jackson, the daughter of Richard and Hope (Hurley) Berlin. On Dec. 12, 1970, she married Douglas Roe in Clinton. He survives.   Connie was a 1969 graduate of Clinton High School and went on to attend Michigan State University. She was an administrative assistant for Roe Brothers Excavating and also employed by Mr. and Mrs. James Sheneman. Connie loved gardening, spending time with her grandchildren and raising chickens. Besides her husband, Douglas, she is survived by one daughter, Mary (Robb) Snow of Canton, and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Michael. She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Pam and Janelle. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Adrian,  with the Rev. He was born December 10, 1942 in Dearborn, Michigan the son of the late Harold and Helen (Krueger) Chambers. Donald was a 1960 graduate of Sandusky High School, he served in the U.S. Army from 1960 - 1962. He retired from the Michigan State Police after 30 yrs. of service, he then worked for AAA and the Michigan Labor Union. He was an avid sports fan and member of Pheasants Forever. Daniel James Masta, 57, of Holland, Mich., passed away Wednesday June 10, 2009, at his brother’s home in Jonesville. He was born April 19, 1952, in Detroit, to Donald and Phyllis (Smith) Masta. Daniel was an avid golfer, hunter and loved to ride his Harley. Dan spent many years hunting and walking in the family woods in Jonesville. He loved teaching people to hunt and golf. He had many golfing buddies and spent most of the warm weather months golfing. Dan also loved wrestling and still holds one of several Wrestling State Championships ever earned at Jonesville High School. Daniel is survived by his brother, David (Michelle) Masta of Jonesville; two nieces, Megan (Jason) Stiverson of Jonesville and Alyssa Masta of Hillsdale; great nieces and nephews, Olivia, Grace and Braden Stiverson, and Colton Daniel Masta; Aunts Estelle and Lil, Uncle Delos and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, great niece Angel and his best friend Tom Quatros. She was a volunteer at Fernwood Botanical Gardens.  Diann was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Besides her loving husband, Diann is survived by one sister, Martha Emery of Phoenix, Ariz.; four brothers, Forrest “Bill” (Delores) Ritter of Phoenix, Ariz., Roy (Linda) Ritter of North Carolina, Sheldon (Beverly) Ritter of Sturgis and Michael Ritter of Payson, Ariz.; as well as many loving nieces and nephews and many good friends.  Besides her parents, Diann was preceded in death by one brother, Harold in 1989.

She was born June 27, 1918, to Vern and Vada Cook, in Spring Arbor. On Nov. 12, 1949, she married Floyd J. Smith and he preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Tom) Hodgdon of New Hampshire and Donna Mueller of Jonesville; two sons, Rick (Starlene) Smith of Jonesville and Donald (Linda) Sparks of Hillsdale; three stepchildren, Robert Smith, Jerry Smith and Rosemary Cooper; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elma Zimmerman and Florence Strong and one brother, Vernon “Bud” Cook. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one daughter and four sisters. Dorothy was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hillsdale. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Dorothy Louise Smith will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 27 with Pastor Jim Olinger officiating. Dorothy M. Winter 1915-2009 Dorothy M. Winter, 93, Sebewaing, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Facility, Caro, following a four-month illness. She was born on July 12, 1915 in Sebewaing, daughter of the late Martin and Helen (Wagner) Roenisch. She was united in marriage to Elmer J. Winter on June 14, 1936 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1990. Dorothy had been employed at the Immanuel Lutheran School in Sebewaing as a cook for 25 years. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, sewing, playing cards and visiting with friends. Surviving are two daughters, Karen (Earl) Genzel, Bloomsburg, Penn. and Marilyn (James) Meek, Sebewaing; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; a daughter-in-law, Rosemarie Winter, Tacoma, Wash.; one sister, Betty Luther, Unionville and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by infant son, Gerald; another son, Kenneth Winter; two brothers, Howard and Raymond Roenisch; one sister, Alice Swenson and one granddaughter, Lisa Klaas. The funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Daniel Hahn will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Dr. Maurice M. Galliani

Dr. Maurice M. Galliani, age 84, of Adrian passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009 at his home. Dr. Galliani was born Feb. 15, 1925, in Pola, Italy, the son of Federico and Silvana (Sestilli) Galliani.  In 1954, four years after graduating from the University of Rome Medical School, Dr. Galliani immigrated to the United States.  On April 27, 1957, Maurice married Sonya A. Miller in Angola, Indiana. Sonya, his wife of over 52 years, survives.  Dr. Galliani started his general practice in 1962 in Lyons, Ohio, while practicing anesthesia at Morenci Hospital. In 1964 he became the first certified anesthesiologist at Bixby Medical Center, where he practiced until his retirement in 1989. During that time, he served a term as Chief of Staff. For several years, he wrote a weekly human interest column for the Daily Telegram. Known for being physically active throughout his life, Dr. Galliani could often be found at the gym or taking extended bicycle trips. His greatest passion was his family. In addition to his wife, Dr. Galliani is survived by his children, Maura Riou of North Port, Fla., Federico “Rick” Galliani and his wife, Amy Wolf, of Coral Springs, Fla.; Cristina and her husband, Todd Wolf, of Tipton, and Giancarlo “Gianni” and his wife, Nicolette Barnard, of Sunrise, Fla.; and a brother, Claudio (Graziella) Galliani of Rome, Italy. Also surviving are six treasured grandchildren, Angela and Jacquelyn Galliani, Paul Michael Wolf, Laura (Steven) Steinle, and Alexandra and Nicolo Galliani. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Fabrizio Galliani. Cremation will take place at Dr. Galliani’s request. Private services will be held in Pennsylvania. ELWYN (BART) RAYSIN SANDUSKY Elwyn (Bart) Raysin, age 77, of Sandusky, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at home. He was born May 27, 1932 in Snover, Michigan, son of the late Bartlett and Edna (Rich) Raysin. Elwyn married Evelyn E. Kotzke in 1955 in Sandusky, Michigan. She passed away on August 16, 1983. He then married Beverly A. Barker on March 13, 1988 in Sandusky, Michigan. Elwyn worked for Yale Rubber for 46 years. He was a U.S. Army Veteran in the Korean Conflict. He was also part of the Thumb Amateur Radio Club (W8IDT) and he was a member of the Sanilac County Park Board. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Raysin; three children, Robert (Judy) Raysin of Clio, Brian (Karen) Raysin of Alaska, Carol (Micky) Van Etten of Marlette; one stepson, Tom (Debbie) Earls of Sandusky; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one sister, Beverly Peplinski of Ft. Gratiot; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Edward Lawrence Bystry, 86, Monroe, Wisc., formerly of Bronson, Mich., passed away at the Angelus Retirement Community in Monroe, on June 28, 2009.  He experienced a stroke from which he did not recover.  He had been in good health. Ed was born on Aug. 29, 1922, the son of Lawrence and Bernice (Barkowski) Bystry in Bronson, Mich.  He was raised  on a farm near Matteson Lake.  He attended St. Mary’s Parochial and Lindley rural schools.  He married Donna Kellett on Dec. 26, 1943 at St. Mary’s Catholic Rectory in Bronson.  She proceeded him in death on May 22, 2009 after 65 years of marriage. They were lifelong residents of Bronson.  Prior to his retirement he worked at Douglas Manufacturing for 44 years.  Ed and Donna enjoyed going to auctions in the area, where they  would find  old pieces of furniture which Ed skillfully restored.  During the winter months Ed enjoyed fishing with his sons and good buddies. He also had a great time playing Michigan Rummy and dominos with the Kibiloski and Szafranski families.  Ed also took great pride restoring and maintaining his home at 314 N. Matteson Street.  He was a loving father and grandfather who enjoyed visiting his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his children, son Michael (Cheryl) Bystry of Monroe, Wisc.; daughter Linda Whitehouse of Evanston, Ill.; son Joseph Bystry of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter Kay (Mike) Walsh of Crystal Lake, Ill.;  son Robert (Jenifer) Bystry of Glen Ellyn, Ill.;  son Larry Bystry of Fishers, Ind.; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived his sister-in-laws Norma Barkowski, Velma Bystry, Martha Kellett and many nieces and nephews. Also proceeding him in death were  his parents; brother Albert Bystry;  sister and brother-in-laws Eleanor and Vern Galloway; cousin and brother-in-law Frank Barkowski; sister-in-law Mary Jane Boes; brother-in-law  Robert W. Kellett;  sister and brother-in- laws  Ann and Don Sellers. Visitation will be held at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson on Wednesday July 1, 2009 from 4-7 p.m. with a Rosary service at 6:30 p.m.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church on Thursday July 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Richard Fritz officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bronson, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made in his memory to St. Mary’s Catholic school and Hospice of Monroe, Wisc.

Edward William Teubert, Jr., 76, of Allen, passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Allen to Edward and Lillian (Hamilton) Teubert, Sr.  He was married Sept. 14, 1952, to Phyllis Rose, and she survives. Ed was a sheet metal worker, retiring from Allied Products in Hillsdale. He later purchased Cutting Edge Lawn Mowing Service in 1992. Ed was a graduate of Jonesville High School and a member of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Allen United Methodist Church. Ed was an avid motorcyclist and enjoyed many cross country trips. He was a former member of the Yamaha Motorcycle Club. He truly loved the outdoors and hunted, fished, camped and was also a hiker. Surviving besides his wife Phyllis are five daughters, Debbie (Kevin) Lemke of Oconomowoc, Wis., Chris (Paul) Powers of Allen, Julie (Carl) Albright of Jonesville, Lisa (Terry) Hubbard of Ida and AmyJo (Jeff) Turner of Kingsley; two sons, Ed Teubert III and James (Karen) Teubert, both of Allen; 25 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charlotte (Charles) Barnes of Bellevue and Mary (Alan) Durham of Charlotte; and a sister-in-law, Carole Teubert of Allen. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Harriet Teubert; a brother, Larry Teubert; and two grandchildren, Christina and Andrew. He was born on Dec. 20, 1961, in Detroit to John and Patricia J. (Watson) Biggerstaff. He married Holly A. Dennis on Dec. 24, 1983, in Addison and she survives. Emery was raised in the Detroit area. He then lived in Addison for two years and then in Panama City, Panama, for five years. In 1989 he lived at Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington state for 12 years. In 2001, he lived at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois and then he lived in Mascoutah for the past four years. Emery graduated from Wayne Memorial High School in 1980. He worked for the U.S. Air Force as a Non-Appropriated Fund Employee for the past 20 years, where he was an Automotive Skilled Center Supervisor at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois. He was an avid Harley Davidson rider, a member of Harley Owners Group (HOG) of Spokane, Wash., and Belleville, Ill. Surviving besides his wife, Holly, are two daughters, Ashley A. Biggerstaff and Ariel A. Biggerstaff, both at home; his mother, Patricia (Luther) Baker of Crystal Falls, Mich., one brother, John Biggerstaff of Devils Lake, Mich.; and his father- and mother-in-law, Jim and Lila Dennis of Addison. Evelyn C. Tolles 1921-2009 Evelyn Curfman Tolles, 87, Pigeon (Caseville Township) and formerly of Birmingham, Mich. passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009 at Covenant Medical Center Harrison in Saginaw. She was born in Oregon on June 21, 1921, daughter of the late Ezra Randolph and Grace Pierpont (Blue) Curfman. She received her B.B.A. degree in 1942 from the University of Southern California, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. On November 28, 1945 she was united in marriage to Robert Stevenson Tolles in Coconut Grove, Florida. He survives her. During World War II, Evelyn worked as a Pan American Airways flight stewardess. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Bloomfield Village Club and the First Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. She and her husband Robert moved to Sand Point in 1986. Evelyn was a homemaker throughout her lifetime. In addition to her husband, Robert, to whom she was married more than 63 years, Evelyn is survived by two children, Thomas Randolph (Barbara Lynn) Tolles, Pigeon and Sally Stevenson (Robert Bruce) Springstead, Brighton; a daughter-in-law, Joan Messenger Tolles, Dayton, Ohio; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Willadee Ullman, Issaquah, Washington and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Robert Stevenson Tolles, Jr.; a sister, Virginia Lee McEwen and two brothers-in-law, Walter Thomas McEwen and Albert Conrad Ullman. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Rev. George A. McPhee 1922-2009 George A. McPhee, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend of many, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe. He was born on October 15, 1922, son of the late William and Gladys (Wallace) McPhee, in Kinde. George graduated from Bad Axe High School in the Class of 1940. He fell in love with and married Marjorie Shaw of Elkton on February 24, 1951 at the Chandler Presbyterian Church. He was a dairy farmer and life long resident of Hume Township. He was a member of Chandler Presbyterian Church, served many years on the session board and was a Sunday school teacher. George was also a member of the North Huron School Board for many years and director for the Elkton Co-Operative. He enjoyed fishing and traveling throughout the United States. He and his wife spent their winters in Florida for over 20 years. He was devoted to raising his family, tending his fields and orchards and enjoyed spending time in his work shop. He was also an avid reader. George is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie; one son, William (Sharon) McPhee, Kinde; three daughters, Cathy (Dean) Tighe, Midland, Diane McPhee and friend, Elena Romaniello, Pinnebog and Ellen (John) Choate, Vermont; eight grandchildren, Ian, Rory and Effie McPhee, Mary Ellen and Currie Tighe and Jesse, Stephanie and Alexa Choate; one sister, Grace Herford and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jean Simons and Margaret Young and one brother, William McPhee. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Gerald E. Phillips, 87, formerly of the Adrian area, passed away Wednesday, June 24, in Manchester, Tenn. Gerald was born on March 23, 1922, the son of LeRoy and Jesse (Huff) Phillips. He was married to Myrtle Jenkins Warner in 1939; she preceded him in death in 1978. In 1980, he married Dorothy Barclay Youngblood, who preceded him in death in 2001. Gerald served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1945-46, and worked at Hurdlock in Adrian. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards and was an avid story teller. Surviving is one son, Edward (Linda) Phillips of Manchester, Tenn.; four stepchildren, Norma (Jack) McDonald of Tecumseh, Shirley (Bill) Benz of Blissfield, Bob (Denise) Youngblood of Berea, Ohio, and Linda (Glenn) McCracken of Henderson, Nev.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, brothers Arnold and Leland Phillips, sisters Vivian Jackson and Imogene Jackson, and granddaughter Kimberly Benz. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m., at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield, with the Rev. Gary Leking officiating. HANTZEL D. ARNETT SR., age 84 of Cement City, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2009, at his home. He was born on Sept. 9, 1924, in Woodstock Township, Lenawee County, Mich., to Clarence O. and Hazel A. (Reeser) Arnett. He married Charlene M. Bernstein on Feb. 16, 1946, in Columbia Township, Jackson County, Mich., and she survives. Hantzel lived in the Cement City area all his life. He attended Cement City Schools.  He was employed at the former General Portland Cement Company of Cement City for 38 years and also in Paulding, Ohio, where he was a foreman. He then worked at the State of Michigan Department of Natural Resources as a work camp superintendent, and then he worked at Michigan International Speedway for eight years in maintenance.  He also worked at the Cement City Department of Public Works. Hantzel was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1942-1946 in the Pacific Theater as crew chief on airplanes. He was 1st Commander of the V.F.W. Post #9453 of Cement City.  He was also a member of the Cement City Fire Department. He attended the Cement City Baptist Church. He enjoyed woodworking, and also enjoyed going up north to their cabin. He was a wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. Surviving besides his wife Carlene are two daughters, Sandy (Chris) Rowland of Cement City, Carolyn (Karl) Basnaw of Horton; one son Rod (Deanna) Arnett of Brooklyn; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Warschefsky of Cement City; one brother, Donald (Rosemary) Arnett of Adrian; several nephews, nieces and cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Hantzel D. Arnett II, two brothers Lafe and Paul Arnett, and one sister, Grace Flint. Harold F. ‘Hal”Cary, died on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, in Tucson, Ariz. He was born on Aug. 19, 1933, in  Kendallville. He served honorably in combat as a U.S. Army Ranger in the Korean War with the 1st Cavalry Division and also with the 101st Airborne. He worked at Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire as an engineer with assignments to Brazil and Italy, before retiring to Arizona. He loved gardening, woodworking, baseball, wrestling, and most of all, his family. He gave his children wings to fly and explore. View, Calif., Greg Cary, Christopher, Jesse and Christina of San Francisco, Calif. and Kim Cary of Fort Wayne; his brothers, Scott (Mary) Cary, Jim (Vivian) Cary, and John (Eleanor) Cary; sister, Myra Mayer; brothers-in-law, Bob Nelson and Donald Mayer; and dozens of nieces and nephews. Helen Sontag, 72, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw following a six-month illness., She was born Aug. 27, 1936 in Kilmanagh, daughter of the late Edwin and Martha (Fuerst) Weber., She was united in marriage to James A. Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. He preceded her in death in January 1997., Helen had been employed as a secretary at the Owendale-Gagetown School system for 19 years before retiring in 1998., She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling., Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Sherry) Sontag, and one daughter, Terri Mihacsi, all of Sebewaing; four grandchildren, Darcie (Chris) Hohne of North Branch, Stacey (Scotty) Buehrly of Owendale, Charlie Mihacsi and Jennifer Mihacsi, both of Sebewaing; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Buehrly and Madeline Hohne; a half brother, Edwin (Chris) Weber of Kawkawlin; and several nieces and nephews., The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. She married Harry J. Hutt June 9, 1947 in Pontiac, he preceded her in death August 14, 1997. Jeannette and her husband owned and operated Red & Harry's Standard Gas Station & Restaurant in Pontiac for several years until their retirement. She also worked as a Welder for a factory many years ago. She was a member of the Good News Assembly of God Church in Marlette. She enjoyed painting, horses, animals and most of all, her family. She is survived by one son, Russell (Susan) Hutt of Marlette; one granddaughter, Kimberly (John) Brailey of Sheridan; one brother, Ronnie Poindexter of Georgia; four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. JUSTINE THAYER ABBOTT DECKERVILLE Justine Thayer Abbott, age 85, of Deckerville, died Tuesday June 16, 2009 in Covenant Cooper Hospital, Saginaw. She was born April 30, 1924 in Carsonville, the daughter of the late Elmer and Mary Trigger. She married Cletus F. Thayer on October 24, 1942 in Deckerville. He preceded her in death July 17, 1978. She then married Archie Abbott on April 27, 1991 in Port Huron. Justine was a member of the Deckerville United Methodist Church, the Rebecca Lodge and the Deckerville Community Hospital Auxiliary. She played basketball and volleyball in high school, and loved to watch high school sports and the Detroit Tigers. She was born June 22, 1920, in Sturgis, a daughter to Ray A. and Della M. (Grimes)Jones. She lived in the White Pigeon area all of her life. She married Joe Kolter, and he preceded her in death. She married John F. Hendrix on Oct. 13, 1973, in White Pigeon, and he died April 15, 1987. She worked at Sutherland Paper Company in Kalamazoo and at Continental Can in Three Rivers, where she worked for 28 years as an inspector. She was a former member of the White Pigeon United Methodist Church. She was known to her friends as “June Bug,”and she enjoyed the farm she lived on all of her life, gardening, raising strawberries and spending time with her cats and dogs. She was known for her summer picnic and corn roast at the farm. Surviving are her stepson, John (Jocelyne Parent)Hendrix of Toronto, Ontario; two nephews; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands and her brother, Marion Jones. Visitation will take place 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Canon Meredith Hunt of St. John’s Episcopal Church officiating. Burial will follow at White Pigeon Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed toward the Humane Society.

Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. Mary Throop, 91, lifelong resident of Hillsdale and Branch counties, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Hillsdale County, to Jacob and Lily (Ragnal) Rossman and was adopted by William and Maude Proctor after her parents died. Mary graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1936 and was a dedicated homemaker and farmer’s wife. At one time, she operated “Mary-Dor Ceramics”. She loved playing cards, especially euchre and canasta, and belonged to the Tops Club in Hillsdale and Red Hat Society. While living at Maplelawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater, she enjoyed leisure time playing bingo. Survivors include one daughter, Sally (Roger) Parish, Lovettsville, Va.; two sons, Robert (Eva) Throop, Hillsdale and John (Karen) Throop, Quincy; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband (Victor Throop), two sisters and three brothers. A graveside memorial service will be held at Camden Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home, Quincy. Memorials are suggested to Maplelawn Medical Care Facility Activities Fund or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Paul F. Roekle, 97, died Friday, June 26, 2009, in Parkview Hospital Hospice Unit in Fort Wayne, Indiana, after a short illness. He was born Feb. 11, 1912, in Palmyra to Gottlob and Martha (Wellnitz) Roekle.  Paul graduated from Adrian High School in 1929 and was employed by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company for several years. On June 6, 1934, he married Virginia (Tyke) Sherman of Adrian. She preceded him in death on Dec. 8, 1998. In 1963, Paul and Tyke opened Tecumseh Office Supply (now Quanits Corporation), and Paul retired in 1977. Paul was active in the First Baptist Church in Adrian and Tecumseh for many years. He was an avid bridge player. He was a 32nd degree Mason. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his mother and father. Paul is survived by three daughters, Sharon Harris of Adrian, Jan (Don) McCrady of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Beth (Jerry) Fox of Clayton; one son, Bryce (Reyna) of Berkley, Michigan; seven grandchildren, Lisa Kuney, Alan, Brian and Diane Copeland, Tami Gooding, Jodi Uloth and Meghan Roekle; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Smith of Adrian and Marie Kahn of Ashton, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 29 at 2 p.m., at the Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Ken Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. He was born February 2, 1939 in Bad Axe, the son of the late Robert M. and Eleanor (Philpot) Kirkpatrick. He married Miss Bonnie King on July 22, 1959 in Croswell. Robert was a life long area farmer; he served in the US Army and enjoyed hunting and wildlife in general. He especially liked to be with his wife, children, grandchildren and his two great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie of Deckerville; two sons, Chuck (Karen) Kirkpatrick of Sandusky, Douglas (Maureen) Kirkpatrick of Deckerville; two daughters, Deborah (Daniel) Woodard of Sandusky, Kathy (Brian) Smith of Midland; thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Marcia (Glen) Taylor of Charlevoix, one sister-in-law, Mrs. Judith King of Sandusky, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Steven D. Kirkpatrick in1962. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Robert C. Reverend A. William Immel 1926-2009 Reverend A. William Immel, 82, Port Hope, entered eternal life on Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. Father Immel was born on July 3, 1926 in Detroit to the late August W. and Antoinette (Karp) Immel. He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 6, 1953. His many assignments included serving as associate pastor at St. Michael Parish, Pontiac, St. Sebastian Parish, Dearborn Heights, St. Clement Parish, Center Line, St. Raymond Parish, Detroit and Guardian Angels Parish, Detroit. He served as pastor at St. David of Wales Parish, Detroit, St. Luke Parish, Detroit, St. Richard Parish, Westland, Sacred Heart Mission, Brown City and St. Mary Burnside Parish, North Branch. Father Immel also served as Vicar of the Old Northwest Vicariate. He retired to the shores of Lake Huron in the Port Hope area where he enjoyed the outdoors and all of God's Beauty. Father Immel is survived by his brother, Frank (Irene) Immel and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Immel and half-sister, Betty Fohey. Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 20, 2009 in St. Mary Burnside Parish, North Branch. Burial was in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach.

Richard “Blondy” Davis, age 82, of Adrian passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at Tendercare of Adrian.  Richard was born Sept. 14, 1926, the oldest child of Daniel and Margaret (Wolfe) Davis. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Cowpens aircraft carrier. On Sept. 21, 1947, Richard married Donna Dennis in Adrian. Donna, his wife of over 61 years, survives. Richard worked for Consumers Energy for 37 years, retiring in 1982. He enjoyed the outdoors, spending time fishing, hunting and playing golf. Richard was a member of the Masonic Lodge #69 in Tecumseh, the Fairfield Eastern Star #224 and the Moose. He was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Adrian where he served as a Deacon and on the Finance Committee. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his daughter, Sharon (Michael) Easter of Ypsilanti; his son, Richard F. (Deborah) Davis of Sand Creek; seven grandchildren, Mark (Melissa) Easter, Jeremy and Kristin Easter, Brian Threet, Jennifer Stucker, Shana (Ryan) Love and Brittany Taylor; and four great-grandchildren, McKenna and Mollie Easter, Jaxson Stucker and Marcus Walker. Also surviving are four sisters, Dorothy Kurtz of Adrian, Rita (LDean) Trolz of Brooklyn, and Ruth (Jaye) Stewlow  and Anne Schultz, both of Toledo, as well as many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Davis in infancy and a daughter, Sue Anne Threet. The funeral service for Richard will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, June 29, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. George Butler and the Rev. Geoff Koglin officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Annis Fint Post #1584 of the VFW. Shirley Gonder, age 70, of Brooklyn passed away on June 25, 2009, at Allegiance Health. Shirley was born on March 19, 1939, in Buckley, Mich., the daughter of Melbirn and Alice (Bracebridge) Austin. She married Frank Alvin Gonder and he preceded her in death in December, 1989.  Shirley was a member of the Heart O’ the Lakes United Brethren Church and a supporter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She was employed by the Ford Motor Co., Saline, Mich., until her retirement, where she was a member of the Local UAW #892. Shirley is survived by her children, Thomas Gonder of Onsted and Tim Gonder of Gladwin; grandchildren, Ian Coe Hensen and Alex Coe Hensen; and great-grandchildren, Alyiah and Addalynn Hensen. Sylvia L. Johnston of North Adams passed away Thursday, June 25, 2009, at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. She was born Aug. 8, 1937, in Hillsdale, the daughter of Cliff and Verna Lewin. Mrs. Johnston graduated from Bellaire High School in 1955 and on Jan. 30, 1960, she married Willard E. “Gene” Johnston. She is survived by her husband; five children, Bill (Sandy) Johnston of North Adams, Jean Johnston of Winchester, Va., Sue (Dick) Wilcox of Decatur, Tenn., Nancy Johnson of Newaygo and Tom (Kathy) Johnston of North Adams who is currently serving on active duty through the Michigan National Guard; seven grandchildren; one brother, Dick (Lillian) Lewin of East Jordan and one sister-in-law, Alma Johnston of Dowagiac.    Mrs. Johnston was a member of Bible Baptist Church in North Adams, the Quilting Society of America and she served as a 4-H leader.    A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Sylvia L. Johnston will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in North Adams at 5. p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Paul Pickell officiating. At her request cremation will follow the service and interment will take place at a later date in the Allen Cemetery. THELMA L. ANGERBRANDT MARYSVILLE Thelma L. Angerbrandt, age 85, formerly of Croswell passed away on February 18, 2009 in Medilodge of Port Huron after a long battle with Alzheimers Disease. She was born December 10, 1923 in Elmer, daughter of the late Herbert and Lulu (Surbrook) Swoffer. She graduated from Croswell High School in 1941. Thelma married George Angerbrandt on February 1, 1942. He preceded her in death on May 11, 1969. Thelma moved to Independence, Missouri and there she worked as a secretary for the Social Security Administration until she retired. She then moved to the Marysville area to be closer to her family. Thelma enjoyed traveling, working in her yard and always enjoyed having a dog by her side to love and care for. She is survived by two daughters, Krystal (Norm) Culver of Sandusky, Marie (Butch) Camm of Croswell; two sons, John (Kim) Angerbrandt of Port Huron, George Angerbrandt of Marysville; one daughter-in-law, Peggy Angerbrandt of Missouri; grandchildren, Janet Culver, Christina (Jared) Myrkle, Barb (Earl) Oliver, Dr. Karen (Ned) Peterson, Tina (Jeff) Pfent, Tiffany (Jeff) Hudy, Tammie (Bill) Wolfe, Tessie Angerbrandt, Johnnie Angerbrandt, Troy Camm, Shawn Johnson; step grandchildren Bobby (Sara) Coberley, LuAnn (Rick) Beemer, Robin Richardson; ten great grandchildren, six step-great grandchildren; one brother, Bruce (Mildred) Swoffer of Missouri; three sisters-in-law, Esther Angerbrandt of Goodells, Donna Angerbrandt of Florida and June Swoffer of Arizona; several nieces and nephews. Thomas F. Emerson 1941-2009 Thomas F. Emerson, 67, Owendale and formerly of Texas, passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2009 in Owendale. He was born on November 19, 1941 in Pontiac, son of the late Karl and Wilma (Drodt) Emerson. Tom was in the last graduating class from Pigeon High School and played high school sports while there. He worked in the computer business and lived and worked in Houston, Texas for 33 years. He was an avid fan of professional sports and enjoyed skydiving as well as bungee jumping. He grew up attending Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon. He is survived by five children, Timothy Emerson, New York, Susie (Darin) McGathy, Bay Port, Jenny Emerson, Warren, Justin (Glenda) Emerson and Jason Emerson (special friend Nicole), both of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; a sister, Joanne Rinnert, Owendale and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, Tommy Emerson in 1988. The funeral service was conducted at on Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Pastor Doug Richardson, chaplain for United Hospice Service, officiated, with cremation to follow and interment at Grandlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family discretionary fund.

Vern L. Thrams, 80, passed away March 21, 2009, at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Zephyrhills, Fla. Vern was born Nov. 25, 1928, in Colon, Mich. He was married in June 1952 to Joan Moser and they made their home in Sturgis, Mich., where Vern was a tool and die maker for Sutton Tool Inc., retiring in 1994. Vern enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He joined several different bowling leagues, traveling to many tournaments. Other hobbies included playing cards, attending the county fair and listening to music. An active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis, and later Our Savior Lutheran in Zephyrhills, Fla., Vern served as usher, teller and elder for many years. He also served on many boards and committees. Vern’s family and friends will remember him as caring and loving. He made everyone feel special by sending personal cards. Holidays were something very special, always including many family members and friends. His sons and grandchildren, nephews and nieces all knew they were loved and were each very important to him. Vern is survived by his companion of several years, Ms. Glea Anthonissen; two sons, Terry Thrams and Tim (Kin)Thrams; four grandchildren, Natalie (Bill)Mahr, Crystal Thrams, Dalton Thrams and Kayde Thrams; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service for Vern Thrams will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at South Colon Cemtery at the corner of North Burr Oak Road and Custer Road in Colon, Mich. All family and friends are then invited to share a luncheon at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 484 Burr Oak Road, Colon. The Rev. Calvin J.. Kolzow Jr. will officiate the celebration of Vern’s life.

Wilbur J. Murphy, 88, of Shipshewana, Ind., died June 27, 2009 at his home following an extended illness. He was born Feb. 16, 1921 in Rosalie, Neb., a son of Edward C. and Henrietta (Mitchell)Murphy. On May 14, 1946, he married Helen A. Urbanec in Walt Hill, Neb. She died July 27, 2008. Wilbur was a World War IIveteran who served in Europe with the 814th Tank Destroyer Battalion. He had lived in Shipshewana since 1954, coming from Rosalie, Neb., and worked at Domore Office Furniture in Elkhart, Ind. for 27 years, retiring from the maintenance department in 1984. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Pigeon, Mich. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Middlebury, Ind. Surviving are two daughters, Jurene (Robert Rodenbarger)Murphy of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Colleen (Tom)Lapopoulos of Shelby Township, Mich.; four sons, Patrick (Betty) Murphy of White Pigeon, Steven Murphy of Hastings, Mich., David Murphy of Bristol, Ind., and Douglas (Mindy) Murphy of Columbia City Ind.; seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred (Joe)Shoop of Sioux City, Iowa; two brothers, Donald and Glen Murphy of Walt Hill, Neb.; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; one sister and two brothers.
