Michigan Obituaries 3/31/09

AIELLO JEROME

Lovable, easy-going dad and husband, left this life on March 29th. He loved his family, his work, and his life, and never desired for anything more. The words to "What a Wonderful World" characterizes how he felt about life. His work as a stonemason left lasting monuments you can see and touch. After serving in World War II, he worked for the Detroit Public Schools for 30 years. He is survived by devoted spouse Joan, six children Toni, Bobbie, Jim, Frank, Mary and Paula; 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren; and blessed with children, Matthew and Tracy, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren by marriage. He often cited an old cartoon, captioned, "Sam Died Today," showing a shuttered shop with a wreath on the door, that also showed children and adults playing and carrying on with their lives all around. As such, we are honoring his wish with no memorial service, but with his desire that you remember him joyfully in your heart.

He married Fern on July 29, 1951 at St. Paul's United Methodist in Nebraska. She died Nov. 21, 1991. He is survived by his children Janice (Robert) Hemker of Union City, Sue Hanson-Gaynor of Novi, Reid Ferguson of Phoenix, Ariz. and Kristie Ferguson of Westland, his sister Sharon Moses, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. After discharge, he enrolled in Nebraska Wesleyan University where he attained a B.A., then attended the University of Nebraska earning a Masters Degree in School Administration. Near the end of this period, Hugh and some buddles were practicing their table tennis in the rear of a gym in the YWCA where a square dance was in progress. The president of the square dance club (his future wife) quietly asked them to cease and desist. Soon Hugh started attending the square dances, quite obviously with ping pong being the last thing on his mind, he asked Fern to accompany him to a young people’s meeting at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Thus the whirlwind romance began. After a courtship and engagement totalling six month, they were married. He was a longtime member and usher at Ferndale First United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Ferndale Masonic Lodge and Ferndale Rotary. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 3-9 p.m. at the Wessels and Wilk Funeral Home in Pleasant Ridge. Jean Byers

Friday, March 27, 2009 1:30 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Born on Nov. 6, 1933 in Fall River, Mass., Jean Byers passed away surrounded by her family on March 19, 2009 at a hospital in Van Nuys, Calif., 10 miles from her home in West Hills. She is survived by her husband Jack Byers and her two daughters Cameron L Morgan and Darlene K Greenwood. In 1934, her family moved to Coldwater, where she grew up with her sister, Janice and her brother Jim. In high school, she met Jack Byers and quickly fell in love. They were married on July 20, 1951 – the same year that she graduated high school. Jack and Jean moved out to California but soon returned to Coldwater where their daughters Cameron and Darlene were born. Jack built Jean and the family a house outside of town, down the street from her parents. In 1960, they returned to California, settling in Canoga Park.   Jean was active in the PTA, Girl Scouts and Sweet Adeline’s. Her passion was singing and during her years in Sweet Adeline’s, she traveled with the group on competitions and also in a variety of shows.   During the 70’s and 80’s Jean took care of many friend and family children and babies.  She added the “Grandma Touch” when helping to care and raise them as if they were her own. Jean was most excited when her 1st grandchild Christopher was born in 1983, quickly followed by the births of her other two grandchildren Shannon in 1985 and Michael in 1986. She loved her family and friends and always wanted to please everyone. It wasn’t unusual to get a phone call from her just to say HI. In 1999, Jean received some unexpected news, having been told that she had colon cancer. But even cancer couldn’t keep her down, as she rebounded quickly after her surgery. Then Jean was challenged with another medical illness of having rheumatoid arthritis in 2005. Unfortunately, this was something that could not be cured; only treated with comfort care. Doctors are still looking for a cure. Although this slowed her down it did not slow down her spirit or love. We will greatly miss our Mom but we will keep her in our memories and in our hearts. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Coldwater at the Baptist church. Details to follow.
