Clarey Rita Mae July 22, 1926 - October 1, 2010. Rita's spirit has risen to heaven to meet her God, her husband and eldest son who preceded her in death. Soon she will be a part of a very special and long awaited McCrady Reunion with her parents and 10 brothers and sisters. Her death will bring to close a generation whose memories we will all cherish. Her last days were spent in the peace and comfort of her home in Sparks, Nevada with her daughter Peggy Clarey and son-in-law, Fred Conner. Rita was born at the farm on Pumping Station Road. Fairfield County, Ohio. She grew up in Sugar Grove, Ohio, attended and graduated from Berne Union School in Sugar Grove, Ohio. Rita was the youngest child born to Charles and Rosemary (Shonebarger) McCrady. Rita was married to Wilbert A. Clarey for 56 years before his death in 2006. At that time she moved to Nevada to live with her only daughter. She had four children: Daniel (Linda), Peggy (Fred), Bruce (Alise), and Andrew (Laura). She had six male grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a Nurses Aid at Garden City Osteopathic Hospital for over 20 Years. G.C.O.H. is located less that one block from the family Home on Cardwell Street, Garden City, Michigan. Her interests included playing cards, bingo, casino gambling and creating Jewelry Pictures. With "Web", she became an active and enthusiastic member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, starting in the mid 50's at Johnsons Post #78, on Joy Road in Detroit, Michigan, and ending her service at Battle Born Post #9211 on VFW Historic Lane in Reno, Nevada. She was anointed by Father Norman King from the Immaculate Conception Church. Her remains will be at the Glen Eden Memorial Park, Livonia, Michigan. Instead of flowers or gifts, remembrances can be PAID FORWARD.

Donald K. "Karl" Matthews Battle Creek Donald K. "Karl" Matthews, 44, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at home. He was born November 30, 1966 in Leesburg, VA, the son of Bertus E. and Betty E. (Preston) Matthews, Jr. Karl attended school in Beaufort, SC, and finished his education in CA. He served his country in the, , spending most of his service time in Alaska, which he loved. Upon his discharge, he worked for a local telephone company in Florida and for his father, as a telephone installation technician. Karl moved to Battle Creek and worked at the Veterans Hospital, but retired in 2009 due to medical reasons, and continued to volunteer there. Karl is survived by his mother, of Battle Creek and his father of Leesburg, FL, brothers and sister; Bertus E. (Karen) Matthews III of Bloomingdale GA; Timothy (Janet) Matthews of Valrico FL; and Angela (David) Hayre of Keystone Heights FL, and his dog, Beau-Muffin. Karl was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter E. Preston and Mr. and Mrs. Bertus E. Matthews Sr. Karl was a member of the First Baptist Church and had been a member of the church choir; he enjoyed playing Euchre at the American Legion and with his singles club and belonged to a bowling team. At the request of the family, visitation is planned from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. A funeral service is planned for 3:30 p.m. Monday, January 31, 2011 at First Baptist Church, 80 E. Michigan, with Rev. Dr. David Laisum and Rev. Dr. Ross T. Lucas will be officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Bushnell National Cemetery, FL. In lieu of flowers friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the church. Kenneth L. Artis Battle Creek Kenneth L. Artis, 77, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011 at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Residence in Battle Creek. He was born August 2, 1933 in Marcellus, MI the son of Addison Quincy and Hazel (Ivens) Artis. Kenneth graduated from Marcellus High School in 1951 and honorably served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years as an aerial photographer. On May 14, 1959 he married Sally L. Seeney and she preceded him in death on April 6, 2010. Ken was employed by the Kellogg Co. for 42 years and was a member of the Kellogg 25 Year Club. Before his illness, Ken was an avid bicyclist, loved to take walks to the lake with his beloved beagle, Bella. He enjoyed baseball games at C.O. Brown Stadium and was nicknamed, "Down in Front." Ken loved feeding the birds in his numerous bird feeders at his home and taking his grandchildren for rides on his John Deere Tractor. Surviving are his two sons, Jeffry (Sherrie) Artis, Terral (Cindy) Artis both of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Kyle (Erin) Schachterle, Mitchell Artis, Turner Artis, Dylan Artis, Kris (Jerica) Terrini and Tiffany Terrini; sisters, Catherine Bradley of Battle Creek, Dorothy Travick of Cut Off, LA, Barbara Bradley of Paw Paw; brother, Gerald Artis of Houston, TX and many loved nieces, nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Floyd and sister, Leona. Memorial services will be held Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. He was the son of Paul and Katherine. Mike leaves behind the love of his life Alice (nee McCormick) after 54 years together. He also leaves behind his four sons and their families: Michael Jr, (Bonnie, Kelly, Michael III), Daniel (Denise, Conor, Kevin, Sean), Patrick (Carrie, Caroline, Patrick, Margaret) and Robert (Kathleen, Dillon, Wyatt). Mike is also survived by his brother Louis (Joyce), and sister Anne (Al) Plachta. He will be missed by both the McCormick and Plachta families, to whom he will always be "Uncle Mike." Paul Robert Williamson Paul Robert Williamson, 71, died peacefully at home in Ann Arbor on January 24, 2011. He was born in Battle Creek on December 2, 1939, to Aubrey and Georgia Williamson. Dr. Williamson graduated from Battle Creek Central High School and attended Albion College. He completed his bachelor's degree in mathematics at the, and earned a doctorate in political science from the University of Hawaii. As a child and teen, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Battle Creek, where he was active in the choir and the youth group. Dr. Williamson was founder and president of Global Vision, Inc., a non-profit organization focusing on forecasting of international conflict. Additionally, he was an employee of Washtenaw Community College and an adjunct professor at the Wayne State University. Dr. Williamson is survived by two daughters, Shannon (David) Amerson of Annapolis, MD, and Genevieve (Christopher) Potter of Burlington, VT; four grandchildren, Jonas and Margaret Georgia Amerson, and Siobhan and Julian Potter; two sisters, Frances (Dale) Folsom of Spring Hill, FL, and Barbara Anselmo of St. Petersburg, FL; uncle, Junior Thornton of Battle Creek, several cousins; and his constant and loved companion, Blackberry, the lop-eared rabbit. Dr. Williamson was known for his detailed knowledge of history and world events, and was an avid reader and writer on related topics. He enjoyed listening to classical music and visiting the Rocky Mountains, his favorite spot in the world. Cremation has taken place, and Dr. Williamson's ashes will be spread in the Rocky Mountain National Park at a later date. Arrangements by the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home. Rachel "Ann" Schoenhals Battle Creek Rachel "Ann" Schoenhals, 91, died peacefully at Calhoun County Medical Care Facility on Friday, January 28, 2011. She was born April 12, 1919 in Coldwater, MI to Herbert and Mildred (Waffle) Sloman. Ann grew up in Coldwater, graduated from Coldwater High School and attended W.M.U. two years. She retired from the Berrien County Friend of the Court, where she worked as an investigator, for over ten years. Ann married John D. Schoenhals on August 31, 1940. On December 21, 1994, she was preceded in death by her husband. Ann is survived by her daughter, Betsy (Tom) Black of Battle Creek; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and four great great-grandchildren. Ann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Niles for over 53 years. She was a loving mother, who treasured her many friendships. At the request of the family, friends may call after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, where funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Tim Smoothers 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Radtke Robert Paul 59, of Bloomfield Hills. A proud family life with Lynn, his wife, and daughters, Sarah and Alyssa. Grew up in Northwest side of Detroit and attended Henry Ford High School. The oldest of five children, Rob loved to spend summers up north with family and friends. Summers were spent fishing and roaming the woods and fields of our beautiful state. Rob graduated from Oakland University and then the National College of Chiropractic in Illinois. He worked first as an associate of George Goodheart, founder of Applied Kinesiology and later practiced privately in Birmingham for 25 years. His ability to reach bodies, hearts and minds was legendary. Rob was gifted at articulating the pilgrimage towards consciousness. Rob was the enthusiastic president of Kirkwood Lake Association for 20 years. Rob loved to fish with his brothers and friends on the beautiful Michigan waterways. All those who knew Rob knew he was the facilitator of fun and joy and true engagement in life. Survived by beloved wife Lynn and daughters Sarah and Alyssa.
