Douglas Eugene “Pops” Dickson, 74, of Milan, Mich., beloved father and grandfather, died on June 4, 2009. Douglas died peacefully at Herrick Medical Center in Tecumseh, Mich., after a courageous battle with cancer. He  was surrounded by family and close friends. Douglas was born on Jan. 2, 1935, in Sylvia, Tenn., to William and  Mabel Dickson. Douglas grew up in Wayne, Mich. He had a long and enjoyable career with the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital where he worked as a Food service supervisor from 1951-1988. Douglas was a member of the Milan Moose Lodge for 10 years. Douglas also enjoyed spending time playing softball and had received a trophy for pitcher of the year. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting with his friends, Jerry Zinker, Ron Desbrough and Ron Dingman. Douglas is survived by his good friend and ex-spouse Sharon Dickson; daughters, Deborah (Tim) Unold, Diane (Rodney) Schroeder, Dawn Spack (Dave Hessler); four grandchildren, Toni, David, Kristina and James, and three great-grandchildren. He had many other dear friends, including Matt Byrd who was always there to lend him a hand. Douglas was preceded in death by his father, William Dickson. The family would like to give special thanks to April and Linda from Hospice of Lenawee for the extraordinary care given to Douglas. In lieu of flowers, the family request  donations be sent to Hospice of Lenawee in the name of Douglas Eugene Dickson.

Edna Allison Hodge, age 94, of Manitou Beach, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009, at her daughter’s home. She was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Hawkeye, Iowa, to William and Anna (Filter) Weitenhagen. At the age of 5, she moved to Adrian, Mich., with her family and spent the rest of her life in Lenawee County. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1932.  She married Edwin Allison of Tecumseh on Oct. 3, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1964. She married Edward Hodge of Morenci on Aug. 22, 1968, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1981. Edna was employed at American Chain & Cable and retired in 1975 after 35 years of service. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Adrian and belonged to the Ladies Aid, L.W.M.L. and Wednesday morning Bible Class. Edna enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidering and watching game shows and sports on TV.  She enjoyed her family the most and loved going to all the family get-togethers. She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Lawrence) Armstrong of Adrian and Janet (Frank) Stevenson of Manitou Beach, with whom she had been residing. She is also survived by a brother, Bill Weitenhagen of Adrian; two sisters, Phyllis (Willis) Sipes of Adrian and Frances (James ) Hubbard of Onsted; four grandchildren, Kelly Armstrong, Brett (Diana) Stevenson of Goodrich, Valerie Stevenson and Jolene (Jon) Bowles, both of Adrian; eight great-grandchildren, Ben and Lacey Creger, Brock and Chase Cheesbro, Christian and Matthew Stevenson, and Noah and Parker Bowles; one great-great-grandson, Gabriel Creger; a brother-in-law, A.L. (Denise) Hodge of Glendale, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; twin daughters at birth; one grandson, Michael Allison; two sisters, Fern Krueger and Hazel Weitenhagen; and a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Weitenhagen. Funeral services for Edna will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Paul Herter officiating. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Mr. Eugene L. Glaser, age 85, Muskegon, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009, in Muskegon. He was born in Van Buren Township Dec. 15, 1923, to William and Margaret (Osborn) Glaser. Mr. Glaser was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II. He was employed by Allied in Hillsdale for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the NRA and the Hillsdale American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid pilot. He is survived by four grandchildren, Adam (Amy) Glaser, Holly (Rob) Ribbons, Aaron and Jacob Glaser; five great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Bosma; one brother, Charles Glaser and one sister, Ruth Miles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth K. Glaser; his parents and his son, Larry Glaser. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Celebration Community Church (1260 W. Sherman, Muskegon, MI 49441) with the Rev. Greg Stamm officiating. Military honors will be performed under the auspices of the Muskegon County Council. Eunice S. Ziegel, 87, of Fort Myers, Fla. died peacefully after a long illness on April 28, 2009. She was born in Lowpoint, Ill. Dec. 7, 1921. After graduating from Lowpoint High School, she married Clarence "Bud" Ziegel who preceded her in death. She and her late husband were the co-founders of Hillsdale Pump and Supply. After retiring from the business, they settled in Fort Myers where Eunice resided for 30 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Z. Peterson (C. Eric) of Chuluota, Fla; son, Rod (Gail) of Hillsdale; two grandsons, Peter A. and Kurt A. Ziegel, both of Chicago and her friend and companion Martin L. Rowe Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service was held at the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial services in Hillsdale are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Araba Temple Children's Transportation Fund, 2010 Hanson St. Fort Myers, FL 33901. The Araba Temple provides transportation for children to receive care at various Shriners Children's Hospitals. Eunice enthusiastically supported this endeavor, which provides assistance to children with injuries, burns and other disabilities.

Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, 71, of Northwest Township, in Williams County, Ohio, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Lovejoy was a 1955 graduate of Edgerton High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Francis was part of the honor guard for President Eisenhower’s second inauguration parade and for one of Queen Elizabeth’s visits. He also traveled to Panama and the Suez Canal during his time in the Army. “Papa Bear Ed” was a lover of animals and shared a passion for the business he operated with his wife, Lovejoy’s Halfway House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. He worked for 44 years and nine months as a laborer at Hayes Albion in Bryan, Ohio. Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Bryan Ohio, the son of William Francis and Opal (Strup) Lovejoy. He married Ruth Marie Sexton on June 13, 1961, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she survives. Mr. Lovejoy is also survived by one daughter, Tina McCrea, of Bryan, Ohio; one son, Bill (Cindy) Lovejoy, of Montpelier, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert Arthur Kissinger III, Amber Opal Kissinger (Matthew) Farnham, Benjamin Ayre Hills, Bowen Jacob Hills, Krista Nicole McCrea, Holly Danielle McCrea, Matthew Link Meyer, and Dustin Ray Meyer; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Matthew Farnham, Copper Lewis Farnham and Aiden Matthew Terrill and his mother-in-law, Ester Sexton. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Tammy Marie Hills, on Nov. 13, 2006. Visitation will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in Krill Funeral Home 114 East Hull St., Edgerton, Ohio. Services for Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Tracey Hammond of Olde York Church, Non-Denominational, officiating. Gertrude Mary Blaskie, age 84, of Bronson, Mich., died early Monday morning, June 8, 2009, at the home of her sister Genevieve in Burr Oak where she had been staying due to her illness. Gertrude was born March 25, 1925, in Sherwood, a daughter of Peter and Julia (Francisco) Blaskie and a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1944, a few weeks after beginning her first job at the former Peoples State Bank of Bronson. Gertrude started as the assistant bookkeeper and assumed the position of bookkeeper within a year or so. Then in 1947, she became the assistant cashier. Through the early years, she also filled in as teller when needed. In about 1960, Gertrude’s job changed to entirely a desk job without teller functions. The Peoples State Bank merged with First National Bank of Quincy in 1969. Within a few years, this became First National Bank of South Central Michigan. Then in 1980, the bank merged with First of America, based in Kalamazoo.  Through it all, Gertrude remained a “constant” at the bank... a familiar smiling face and a helpful, gracious manner for all customers. At the time of her retirement on June 30, 1989, after a 45-year career, Gertrude was the bank’s customer service representative, handling new accounts, purchases of certificates of deposit and many other customer related functions. Gertrude was an active member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson where she served on several committees over the years, and she was a member of the Sacred Heart Society. She was a long-time member, treasurer and past president of the American Business Women’s Association and had served for several years on the Board of Directors of the former Bronson Community Chest.  She was honored as Polish Festival Queen in 1984. She enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening in her spare time. Surviving are her brothers, Theodore Blaskie of Seattle, Wash., Raymond Blaskie of Florida and Leon Blaskie of San Angelo, Texas; her sisters, Genevieve Cadman and Theresa Grossman, both of Burr Oak, and Angeline Tierney of Elkhart, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis. Prayers before Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from  2-4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.  Memorial donations are suggested to St. Mary Church or to the Bronson Food Pantry.

Helen Sontag, 72, of Sebewaing, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008 at St. Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw following a six-month illness., She was born Aug. 27, 1936 in Kilmanagh, daughter of the late Edwin and Martha (Fuerst) Weber., She was united in marriage to James A. Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. He preceded her in death in January 1997., Helen had been employed as a secretary at the Owendale-Gagetown School system for 19 years before retiring in 1998., She was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling., Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Sherry) Sontag, and one daughter, Terri Mihacsi, all of Sebewaing; four grandchildren, Darcie (Chris) Hohne of North Branch, Stacey (Scotty) Buehrly of Owendale, Charlie Mihacsi and Jennifer Mihacsi, both of Sebewaing; two great-grandchildren, Brayden Buehrly and Madeline Hohne; a half brother, Edwin (Chris) Weber of Kawkawlin; and several nieces and nephews., The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008 at the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing. Horst Renz Longenecker, 57, of Hillsdale, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Lynwood Manor, Adrian. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany on Aug. 18, 1951, to Robert and Patricia (Walden) Longenecker. Horst graduated in 1969 from Burges High School in El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in 1974. He was a favorite radio personality as a disc jockey in Texas and New Mexico. Horst had a longtime career in television as both a producer and news anchor at station KTSM News Channel 9 in El Paso. After moving to Michigan, he was employed at Hillsdale Veterinary Hospital for nine years. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Longenecker and brother, Robert Longenecker of El Paso; brother, William Longenecker of Austin, Texas; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Longenecker Sr. and his beloved Golden Retriever, Homer. Memorial services for Horst Longenecker will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hillsdale. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Jeanne E. Reed, 78 of Marshall ,and formerly of Coldwater, died peacefully at her home on Monday, June 8, 2009. Mrs. Reed was born on June 29, 1930 in Coldwater to Harry T. and Nellie (Dailey) Stansell. She has been a resident of the Marshall area since November 1949.  Jeanne had been employed as a beauty operator for forty four years. She worked Lena’s Beauty Nook from 1949 until 1953. She then established a long association with Mi-Lady Beauty Salon. She worked there for thirty four years, retiring in 1992.  Jeanne had also been active selling real estate. She had been associated with Eckloff Realty from 1969 to 1983 and then with Sherman Realtors from 1983 until her retirement from selling real estate in 1986. On Aug. 26, 1950, she married George A. Reed in Coldwater. He preceded her in death on Sept. 5, 2000. Jeanne was a member of the Marshall First Presbyterian Church. She was a very active member of the church and enjoyed the many volunteer opportunities. She helped with the assembly of the weekly church bulletins and was a reader at the Presbyterian Center of Children. She was a long time member of the Women of the Moose. Jeanne had been a very active volunteer with the Marshall Annual Home Tour and had served on numerous committees.  She is survived by a son, Bruce R. (Virginia) Reed of White Lake; twin granddaughters, Jillian and Kayleigh Reed; brothers, Dr. William Stansell of Woodland, Calif. and Jack Stansell of Coldwater. She was preceded in death by a step-son, George Reed Jr. The family will receive friends on Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of her life will be held Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Marshall First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Seth Weeldreyer officiating. Joan J. Harmon, 79 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away June 6, 2009, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was born June 30, 1929, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late Freddie F. and Cora (Nihart) Messner. Joan had resided in the Sturgis and White Pigeon area all of her life. On Sept. 10, 1949, she married Edward A. Harmon at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. He died Jan. 17, 2003. Following 13 years of employment with the Ameritrust National Bank in Sturgis, she retired in 1990. She had also been employed by the Kirsch Company, Wade Electric and General Fire Proofing, all in Sturgis. Joan was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson. She enjoyed working with stained glass, cross stitch, crocheting and watching NASCAR. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Giavonni) Iannotti of Sterling Heights, and Krystal Schwartz of Gobles; five sons, David (Monique) Harmon of Sacramento, Calif., Mark (Ranah) Harmon of Elkhart, Ind., Keith (Debbie) Harmon of Columbus, Ind., Dale (Rebecca) Harmon of Galesburg and Timothy Harmon of Paw Paw; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Donna) Messner of Sturgis; one sister, Julie Brandt of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; one grandson, Justin Harmon; and one sister, Mary Schram, preceded her in death. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Joan J. Harmon will be held at 11 a.m.  Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091. The Rev. Father Richard Fritz of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. On May 21, 1960, he married Beverly Holloway. She survives. Ken lived in Addison for 35 years before moving to Brooklyn. Ken had two nieces, Loren and Courtney Carpenter, who adopted him as their grandfather. He was very fond of Steve and Julie Haas and their family, they kept him going after he retired and were a second family to him.  In addition to his wife, Beverly, he is survived by two sons, Mark (Cheryl) Baker of Manitou Beach and Mike (Jessica) Baker of Adrian; one granddaughter, Tanya (Derek) Shetterly of Tennessee; one great-grandson, Dalton; one stepgrandson, Dakota; three sisters, Rebecca Adams of Brooklyn, Majorie (Ron) Smith of Adrian, Joanne (Elwood) St. John of Jackson; two brothers, Thomas Baker and William Baker, both of Jerome; and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. She graduated from Mendon High School Adult Education in 1983.  Margie had made her home in rural Burr Oak for the past 57 years.  She had worked for the former Kirsch Company in Sturgis and was also a homemaker where she helped with the growing, preparing, preserving and selling of produce. She was a member of the Colon American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Sturgis Eagles.  She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Jean (Michael) Whitcomb of Sherwood, Sharon Decker of Colon and Tammy Jo (Jody) Fredenburg of Mendon; one son, Dean D. (Betsy) Kline of Burr Oak; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry L. She was a member of the Addison United Church, the Addison Senior Center and the Department on Aging Advisory Board. She was also a member of the Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the American Business Women’s Association, Acorn Chapter. Surviving are two daughters, Robin (Ted) Burdick of Somerset Center, Melissa (Norman) Hopkins of Jerome; one son, Daniel (Kim) Newton of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Christine (Josh) Stanley of Jackson, Carrie Burdick of Somerset Center, Kendra (Matt) Natter of Garden City, Timothy Hopkins of Jerome; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Reeve and Peyton Stanley, and Emily Natter. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. She was married Oct. 22, 1933 to Dr. Charles C. Auseon and he preceded her in death in 1964. Nadyne was a 1931 graduate of Hillsdale High School and attended Hillsdale College. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at Hillsdale College and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Board of Women Commissioners of Hillsdale College, Hillsdale Woman’s Club, the DAR, and a life member Wenona Chapter of the order of the Eastern Star. After the death of her husband in 1964, Nadyne worked for Gelzer’s Furniture, Carriage House Gifts and the Hillsdale Daily News. She worked at the newspaper as a proof-reader for 25 years retiring at age 85. Surviving are two sons, Thomas James “Tim” (Barbara) Auseon of Hillsdale, and Dr. John Charles (Jeanie) Auseon of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Van Marsh. Memorial services for Nadyne F. Auseon will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale with the Rev. Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away June 1, 2009, at the age of 85. She was born May 25, 1924 in Waldron, the sixth child of nine, to Frederick M. and Sara (Black) Boyd. She married John H. Peebles from Hudson on Feb. 10, 1944 and moved with him to Southern California in 1945. Pat attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a history degree from California State University at Los Angeles after her children were grown. Pat played catcher for the Steel Products softball team after high school. She was involved with the PTA, Girl Scouts, the March of Dimes and little league while her son and daughter were growing up. She was also very involved with civic affairs and ran for the Temple City School Board. Pat was a voracious reader and worked in the public library and the travel business. She opened her own travel agency in 1977. Pat loved to travel and did so extensively to better advise her clients. She always went out of her way to make their trips the best they could be. In 2007, Pat and John moved to Northern California to be near their daughter and her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Pat is survived by her husband, John Peebles; son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City, Calif.; daughter, Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael, Calif.; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Adams Jacobson, James Adams; great- grandson Wes Peebles; sisters, Mildred Cotter of Oxford, Ohio, Blake Shilling of West Unity, Ohio, and Betsy Jones of Hillsdale; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A Mass of Christian burial for Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Father Ioane Sigarara officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Jefferson Township. The family will receive friends for visitation 3-5 p.m. Sunday at the VanHorn-Eagel Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Paula Jean Valdez, age 62, of Adrian, passed away, Friday, June 5, 2009, at her home.  She was born Dec. 24, 1946, in Kingsport, Tenn., to Harlas and Pauline (Bise) Stump. Paula loved to spend time with her family and friends, go shopping, out to eat, chat on the phone and her computer.  She is survived by four daughters, Renee Valdez, Rae Valdez and Tina Crawford, all of Adrian, and Tonya (Craig) Elarton of Blissfield; one sister, Tammy Allison of Tennessee; and her grandchildren, Khrystopher, Katelynn, Keyanna, Meagan, Micheal, Tyler and Camdyn. Cremation has taken place. Raymond E. Tullos 57, of White Pigeon, Mich., passed away suddenly Thursday at Three Rivers Health. He was born Feb. 14, 1952 in Louise, Mississippi to Sherman Lee and Betty (Horton) Tullos Sr. He married Carolyn A. West May 1, 1971 in Wasepi, MI. Raymond had lived in the White Pigeon area most of his life. He worked in the automotive industry and enjoyed old cars. He is survived by his wife Carolyn; one daughter Kristi (Javier) Trejo of Elkhart, Ind.; three sons Raymond E. (Kim) Tullos Jr. of Victoria, Texas, Gregory Tullos of White Pigeon, Craig (Nancy) Rowe of Sturgis, Mich.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his mother, Betty Tullos of White Pigeon; three sisters, Christin Reichman of White Pigeon, Jenny Tullos of Three Rivers, Ruby Tullos of Nottawa; seven brothers, Sam (Carol) Tullos Sr of White Pigeon , Sherman L. Tullos Jr of Sturgis, Robert Tullos of Sturgis, Billy Jo (Sue) Tullos of White Pigeon, Johnny (Rose) Tullos of White Pigeon, Richard (Destiny) Tullos of White Pigeon, Tomy (Idona) Tullos of White Pigeon and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father. Shirley Loretta Motter, age 74, formerly of Sherwood, passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, at the home of her son Mark in Sherwood. Shirley was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Battle Creek, Mich., a daughter to the late Leonard and Zera (Hicks)Batterson. On Feb. 28, 1956, she married Lyle Motter in Angola, Ind. Shirley had lived in the Factoryville and Sherwood area most all of her life. She was a homemaker and attended the Center Park Methodist Church. Shirley enjoyed crocheting, country music, dancing, and most of all, time spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Lyle Motter of Sherwood; three children, Kandy Motter of Sherwood, Micheal Motter of Three Rivers, and Mark Motter and his wife, Kit, of Sherwood; a sister, Norma Walterspaugh of Union City; two grandchildren, Alissa and Sam Oesch; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Phillip, Lloyd, Ralph and Leonard Jr.; and three sisters, Madeline, Beverly and Deana. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Shirley L. Motter will be  at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Cemetery in Sherwood. If desired, the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Shirley to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Vernell Odom, 76, of Constantine, Mich., died June 6, 2009 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo following a two-week illness. She was born Feb. 3, 1933 in Jasper, Ala., a daughter of Louis and Willie May (Gradey)Hyche. She was a Constantine resident for 12 years, coming from White Pigeon where she lived for 20 years. She had lived in Elkhart, Ind., prior to that. On Sept. 17, 1949, she married Jack Odom in Birmingham, Ala. He died in 1965. She was a homemaker and a mother and enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Debbie (Ed) Dressler of White Pigeon, Mary (R.J.) Niece of Three Rivers and Benita Lammon of Port Clinton, Ohio; a son, Ronnie E. (Jan)Odum of Three Rivers; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mae Griffin, Katie Edie, both of White Pigeon, and Evelyn (Leon)Griffin of Constantine; a brother, Vernon (Sue)Hyche of White Pigeon; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Jackie Caldwell; two sons, Roger and Patrick Odom; a sister, Lilly Mae Hyche; and four brothers, Thomas, Roy, James and Jonnie Hyche. Relative and friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrand Funeral Home of White Pigeon where services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. She was born July 24, 1955, in Holmes County, Fla., a daughter to the late Clifton and Charlie Etta (Sutton) Kilpatrick and has been a Sturgis area resident most of her life. On July 10, 1999, in Constantine, Mich., she married Daniel Schultz. Wanda was a homemaker, a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Constantine, and a member of the Constantine American Legion Auxiliary.  She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, and spending time with her granddaughter. Surviving are her husband, Daniel; three sons, Charles David Kilpatrick of Sturgis, Mich., Steven Dale Merkle of Oklahoma and Adam Wayne Merkle of South Bordman, Mich.; a daughter, Katie Lynn Merkle of Michigan; a granddaughter, Jasmine Kilpatrick of Constantine; and three sisters, Catherine Krawiec of Louisiana, Patricia Lewis and Sandra Kilpatrick, both of Constantine, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, George Stephen Kilpatrick. A graveside service celebrating the life of Wanda M. Schultz will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Burr Oak Cemetery with Pastor Rudy Granthem, Constantine Bible Baptist Church, officiating.
