ALBERT EDWARD WILLIAMSON SPEAKER TOWNSHIP Albert Edward Williamson, age 78, of Speaker Township, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 26, 2009 at McKenzie Memorial Hospital. He was born on May 12, 1930, in Mt. Clemens, the son of the late Lowell and Floda (Piffer) Williamson. Albert married Velma (Moe) Louise Mostek on October 1, 1949, at the Church of God in Warren. He was employed with several companies in plastic manufacturing and retired from Continental Plastics of Fraser in 1994 after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Latin American Baptist Church of Imlay City. He enjoyed his garden and rabbits, but the love of deer and bird hunting was always his first priority. Surviving are his wife, Moe of 59 years, three sons; Edward of Melvin, Gary (Dee) of Florida, Alex (Tammy) Williamson of Melvin, one daughter; Frances (Robert) Ballor of Peck, ten grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one sister; Irene Stone, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by siblings Leroy, Jewel, Coy and Buel. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 29, 2009 with 10:00 a.m. visiting. Rev. ALVIN LAVERNE JONES SANDUSKY Alvin LaVerne Jones, age 84, of Sandusky, died Monday, April 27, 2009 at Sanilac County Medical Care Facility in Sandusky, Michigan. He was born July 27, 1924 in Otter Lake, Michigan the son of the late Charles and Viona Jones. He was a lifelong area resident, farmer and graduate of Marlette High School. Alvin married Peggy Coulter on November 9, 1946 in Lapeer, Michigan. They resided the last 27 years in Luzerne, Michigan and spent winters in Golf Shores, Alabama for the last 15 years. Alvin was an active member of the Moose Lodge in Mio, receiving the Fellowship Degree and a member of the Legion of the Moose. He is survived by his wife; Peggy, one daughter; Barbara (Dave) Vasbinder of Kingston, two sons; Bill (Robin) Jones of Kingston, Charles (Nanette) Jones of Shelby Twp., one brother; Delton (Boney) Jones of Luzerne, six sisters; Beatrice Harneck of Kingston, Myrtle Diegel of Mio, Marjorie (Albert) Foote of Hemans, Ruth Foster of Marlette, Lois (Jerry) Tallieu of Luzerne, Donna Pierce of Georgia, eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Andrew E.K. Sprow, age 71, of Adrian passed away April 29, 2009. He was born Nov. 27, 1937, in Adrian, the son of Joseph and Sara (June) Sprow. He entered the Air Force on April 30, 1957, and was discharged in April of 1963. On March 31, 2000, he married his best friend, Barbara Nye. She survives. Andrew loved to bowl and roller skate. He was also a very talented artist and he loved helping people, working on old cars, dancing and spending time with his family. Andrew always whistled a tune and everyone loved to hear him whistle. He was an active member of A.A. for 33 years. He has left behind many friends. In addition to his wife, Barbara, he is survived by his brother, Kenneth Sprow of Norridge, Ill.; three stepsons, Larry (Linda) Barber of Hudson, James (Kristin) Barber of Adrian and Joseph (Shannon) Barber of Tampa, Fla.; 17 stepgrandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; seven sisters-in-law, Colleen Sprow, Jewel Sprow and Ruth Sprow, all of Adrian; Susan McCoy of Oklahoma, Delores Miller of Tecumseh, Carol Benjamin of Saline and Joyce Barrett of Adrian; one brother-in-law, Duane Barrett of Washington; along with his nieces and nephews, Kevin Sprow, William Sprow, Gale Baker, Joseph Sprow, Sarah Wells, Sandra Clute, Diane Voss, Debra, Donna and Danny Sprow. Anna M. McCartney 1913-2009 Anna M. McCartney, 95, Bad Axe, passed away on Monday, April 20, 2009 at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. She was born on August 22, 1913 in Rock Rapids, Iowa, daughter of the late Theodore and Dena (Kruger) Westerbur. She married James A. McCartney on February 6, 1939 in Ypsilanti. He preceded her in death on August 16, 1990. Anna moved to Bad Axe in 1992 from the Alma area where she and her husband, James, farmed from 1941-1969. She was active in her church and enjoyed cooking and flower gardening. Anna is survived by one daughter, Theo Jeanne (Jerry) Cleland, Cass City; three grandchildren, Dale D. (Shawn Leighton) Cleland, Leavenworth, Kan., Katha (Martin) Chockley, Algonac and Beth Ann (Paul) Weise, Gaylord; one brother, Melvin (Irene) Westerbur, Canton and eight great-grandchildren. Carl Martin Hakes II, 78, of Onondaga, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. Carl was born March 1, 1931, in Albion, Mich., and was the first-born child of Carl and Eva (Raser) Hakes. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Judith (Hodge) Hakes, whom he married Nov. 21, 1964. Also surviving are one son, Carl Martin Hakes III of Leslie; one daughter, Joy (Hakes) Collier of Parma and six grandchildren. Carl is also survived by one brother, Danny Hakes of Manchester, Mich. and four sisters, Dr. Judith Hakes of San Angelo, Texas, Edith (Hakes) Chapman of Mosherville, Trinka (Hakes) Noble of Bernardsville, New  Jersey and Eva (Hakes) Martin of Concord and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Howard Miles Hakes of Kalamazoo. Carl was a 1951 graduate of Jonesville High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University. While a student at  Jonesville High School, he was especially fond of his band director, Mr. Richard Kloko and his English teacher, Mrs. Carpenter. Carl was the drum major who could really strut and many times he would twirl his batons while they were lit with fire. He also was a member of the 4 Stars, playing his bass fiddle. Carl was an avid gardener, at one time growing over 10,000 gladiolus. Carl served his country in the United States Navy where he was a jet pilot and also a lieutenant. Carl was a member of Pope United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. Carl loved his family with all his heart and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services for Carl were held April 18 at the Watson Funeral Home in Parma. Interment was at the Pope Church Cemetery. Carolyn C. LeGault 1923-2009 Carolyn C. LeGault, 86, Harbor Beach, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at Courtney Manor Nursing Center, Bad Axe. She was born on January 27, 1923 to the late Charles and Lena Geiger. Carolyn and Raymond LeGault were united in marriage on March 6, 1943 in St. Anthony's Church, Helena. He preceded her in death on August 26, 2008. Together Ray and Carolyn owned and operated the Harbor Light Bar until 1969. Carolyn was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. She loved gardening and the outdoors. She enjoyed quilting and baking for family and friends, especially her coffee cake. Most of all, Carolyn loved her family and grandchildren and loved to spend every minute she could with them. Carolyn is survived by her children, Richard (Beverly) LeGault, Sandusky, Bonnie Henne, New York, Cindy (Jim) Carmody, Rochester Hills, Gene (Barb) LeGault, Harbor Beach, Lynn (Gary) Champagne, Elkton, Deborah (Jerry) Hessling, Harbor Beach and Rob LeGault, Sandusky; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two sisters, Rita Booms, Harbor Beach and Evelyn Kraft, Clinton Township. He married Irma Aimes and she preceded him in death on March 8, 1985. On Aug. 23, 1993, he married Rebecca Ann Roberts in Cheboygan, and she survives. Don was a self-employed cement contractor. She had been a lifelong resident of the Adrian area. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1939. Dora was married to William H. Viers in Wauseon, Ohio, on June 29, 1940. He preceded her in death on May 28, 1990. Dora was a member of the Tecumseh Friends Church. She was a volunteer and caregiver for Hospice of Lenawee and a volunteer at the Morning Glory Adult Care Center of Tecumseh. Edna Marcile Hardy, 91, of Jerome, passed away Jan. 28, 2009, at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital in Shenandoah, Texas. She was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Brooklyn, Mich., to Percy and Nina (Stewart) Tilden. She married Ralph Douglas Hardy on May 4, 1940, in Manchester, Mich., and he preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1994. She lived most of her life in Tipton, Manitou Beach and Jerome area.  She graduated from Napoleon High School  in 1937.  Edna attended Cosmetology School in Ann Arbor for one year.  She was co-owner of Hardy-Reed Tool & Die in Manitou Beach for 11 years, retiring in 1971.  She wintered in Conroe, Texas.  She enjoyed playing cards at the Addison Senior Citizens Center, enjoyed jig-saw puzzles and visiting with her friends. Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Miller of Pittsford, Pat (Roger) June of Mason, Ohio and Mary (Steve) Bowman of Conroe, Texas; one son, Thomas Hardy of Manitou Beach; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Josephine Wineland of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents,her husband and one sister, Margarite Virginia Prielipp. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25 at the Addison United Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lykins officiating. Local arrangements are entrusted to the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. Elizabeth N. Stafford 1915-2009 Elizabeth N. Stafford, 93, Saginaw, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at her home. Elizabeth was born in Port Hope on October 25, 1915, the daughter of the late William R. and Ivy (Nicklin) Stafford II. Ms. Stafford received a Bachelor's Degree from Michigan State University and a Master's Degree in Music from the University of Michigan. She taught school in southern Michigan and the Thumb area before coming to Saginaw in 1959 to teach at Morley School until retirement in 1980. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir and played in the bell choir. Participating in the Saginaw Choral Society was one of the things she enjoyed, along with her former membership in Delta Kappa Gamma. Elizabeth is survived by two sisters, Louise J. Larsen, LaHabra, Calif., and Frances I. Stafford, Pinconning; three nieces; several cousins and many friends. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service took place on Friday, April 24, 2009 at First United Methodist Church, Saginaw, with Rev. Kathryn Snedeker officiating. Emily B. Brant, age 81, of Adrian passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Lynwood Manor. Emily was born Nov. 19, 1927,  in Clinton Township, the oldest daughter of Lee Roy and Ruth (Kendrick) Smith. She graduated from Adrian High School with the class of 1945. Emily worked for Bixby Medical Center for 22 years, retiring in 1991. In her retirement she worked for the public schools as a teacher’s aide and a foster grandparent. Emily was a licensed pilot who was active in the Civil Air Patrol in the 1940s. She enjoyed volunteering at the Lenawee County Library. Emily was a faithful member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Emily is survived by two daughters, Lois (Brian) Whetro of West Unity, Ohio, and Linda (Randy) Brant of Fayette, Ohio; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Phillip Smith of Adrian; and a sister, Nancy Young of North Carolina. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Grzegorzewski; a son, Daniel Brant; and a sister, Olive Murray. The funeral service for Emily will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor David Fulks officiating. Burial will follow at Graham Cemetery. Francis Frederick “Fritz” Lehman, of North Adams, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the “Mac” McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Detroit, the son of Robert and Alma (Hacht) Lehman. Fritz moved to Hillsdale in 1927 and graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1938. He served his country in the United States Army from July 1941 until May 1945. He married Martha Dwyer Nov. 2, 1946, and he worked at Gampco in North Adams for over 40 years retiring in 1984. He attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale and was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his yard. Fritz was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margie; two brothers, Robert and Eugene (twin); one son, Timothy and one daughter, Melissa. He is survived by his wife, of 62 years, Martha (Dwyer) Lehman; grandchildren, Kelly Lehman, Travis (Tami) Lehman, Jason (Heather) Brink, Heidi (Joe) Riley; great-grandchildren, Cody, Brock, Carter, Caleb, Marissa, Jace and Madison; daughter-in-law Helena Lehman and son-in-law James Brink. John A. Gilbert, age 64, of Three Rivers, Mich., died Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at his home, following an extended illness. John was born on May 12, 1944, in Owsley County, Ky., a son of Orville and Louise (Short) Gilbert. He lived in Kentucky early in life and moved on to White Pigeon and Middlebury, Ind., and had lived in Three Rivers for 11 years. On Sept. 6, 1969, he married Alice L. Connelly in Plymouth, Mich. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and has been a self -employed owner and operator in trucking, employed with Leland Engineering in White Pigeon for 13 years, and most recently worked with Gilbert and Son Trucking. John was a member of Riverside Church in Three Rivers. He enjoyed racing and building his Chevy drag racing car, collecting hats, coins, guns and semi trucks. He was an expert marksman and a champion storyteller. Surviving are his wife, Alice of Three Rivers; three sons, John (Amy) Gilbert of Middlebury, Billy (Linda) Gilbert of Virgina Beach, Va., and Michael (Sarie) Gilbert of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; a daughter, Sherry (Tom) Miller of Toledo, Ohio; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Betty (Johnnie) Bishop of Oneida, Ky., Imogene (James) Abshear of Nicholasville, Ky.; two brothers, Sedric Gilbert and Fred Gilbert, both of Lexington, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Farrand Funeral Home, 300 N. Kalamazoo St., White Pigeon. The funeral is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Joyce Kruszka, age 76, of Sherwood, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 26, 2009, following a brief illness. She was born in Bronson on April 1, 1933, a daughter of Harry and Mabel (Spade) Davis, and graduated from Bronson High School. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., for a short time. In 1953, Joyce married Richard Nowak in Bronson and they moved to the Detroit area.  That marriage ended in divorce. In 1963, she married Peter Kruszka of Bronson, in Indiana. Together, they moved to the family farm to Sherwood. Peter preceded her in death in 2005. Joyce was a homemaker and a retiree of Bundy Tubing. In her retirement years, she enjoyed playing cards, hunting for morel mushrooms, fishing, gardening, and picking berries. One of her favorite pastimes was watching the many hummingbirds that used to flock to her feeders. She especially enjoyed spending time and taking walks with her four-legged companion, Molly. Surviving are her son, David Nowak, and her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Carol Nowak, all of Sherwood; her daughter, Lynda Weers of Coldwater; four grandchildren, Robin Nowak, Kevin Nowak, Keith Nowak, Jasen Weers; and a stepgrandson, William Phillips. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Peter Kruszka; and her sisters, Wilda “Billie” VanderErden, Doris Mladenoff, Bette Jane Lipinski and an infant sister, Joan Davis. The family will receive friends from 4–8 p.m. today at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. Larry L. Lung, age 68, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Sunday afternoon, April 26, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 16, 1941, in Indiana, a son to Hurlus “Sleepy” and Mary Lung. On Oct. 13, 1961, he married Pearl Gray in Centreville. She died Sept. 6, 1993. He retired from Grumman Olson in Sturgis following 30 years of dedicated employment. He had also been involved in the logging industry. Larry was a life member of Loyal Order of Moose #574 and he enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, bowling and going to casinos. He is survived by his son, James P. (Tina) Lung of Sturgis; mother, Mary Weldy of Goshen, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Patricia of Indiana; two granddaughters, Cynthia and Crystal; and several great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers. He was preceded in death by his father and wife. The family will receive friends and relatives from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes,  Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. He is also survived by his parents, Virgil and Ruth Owens of Jonesville; three children, Larry Jr. (Denise) Owens of Jackson, Raquel (Tim) Owens of North Adams and Stephanie Owens of North Adams; four grandsons, Brock, Ridge, Bryce and Nathan; one step grandson, Jonathan; one brother, Gary (Mary Jo) Owens of Hillsdale; one sister, Marietta (Randy) Raber of Tampa, Fla. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Steven Owens. Larry graduated from North Adams High School and retired from Hillsdale Tool in 2008 after over 37 years of service. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family at the campgrounds. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed football and NASCAR racing and was a former coach for baseball in the North Adams area. He was also a cancer survivor for the Relay for Life. The family will receive friends for visitation at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. At his request, cremation will follow the visitation and a private service for the family will be held at a later date. Leah Jane Filer, age 81, of Tecumseh passed away, April 29, 2009, at her residence. She was born March 19, 1928, in Huntington Woods, Mich., the daughter of the Rev. H. Ed and Jessie (Walton) Weinzierl. On Nov. 16, 1946, she married Frederick N. Filer Jr. He survives. Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. She enjoyed cats, crafts, gardening, needle work, and visiting with family and friends., Lou Wanda is survived by two daughters, Jane Ann (David) Sadro of Ubly, and Theresa (Dan) Hill of Bad Axe; two sons, Eugene Guza of Bad Axe, and Leon Guza Jr. and Karan of Bad Axe; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Sadro, Sarah and Kelsey Hill, Sloan, Kelsie and Darian Gross, and Rayne and Sommer Guza. Marcia Kay Booher, 55, of LaGrange, Ind., died April 24, 2009, at her Fish Lake Home.  She was born in Winchester, Ind., on Sept. 7, 1953, to Ben and Kay  (Sheilds) Johnson.  She graduated from Northeastern High School in Fountain City, Ind., in 1971. She then went on to attend the Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn. and then Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne to earn a degree in elementary education. She married Michael D. Booher on June 4, 1971, in Whitewater, Ind.  Mrs. Booher taught at Prairie Heights Community Schools as a fifth- and first-grade teacher for 19 years.  She helped develop the Panther Paradise which is an interactive learning garden for the children.  She was a member of the South Milford Church of Christ in South Milford where she was very active. Mrs. Booher played the organ, sang in the choir, was active in the ladies Joy Circle and helped with junior church. She loved working outside in the garden with her flowers and enjoyed spending time on the water with her family.  Surviving are her mother, Kay Johnson of Richmond, Ind.; husband, Michael D. Booher of LaGrange; one daugher, Michelle and Len Walter of South Milford;one son, Martin and Tiffany Booher of South Milford; four grandchildren, Logan Walter, Tanner Walter, Lillie Booher and Febie Marcia-Rose Booher; two brothers, Steve and Kathy Johnson of Richmond, Ind. and Mark and Cindy Johnson of Carthage, Ind.; one sister, Linda and Dennis Hopkins of Knoxville, Tenn.; one half brother, Chris Johnson of Lynn, Ind.; several neices and nephews; and mother-in-law, Barbara Booher of Kendallville.  She was preceded in death by her father, Ben Johnson; and her father-in-law, Russell Booher.  Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday at South Milford Church of Christ north of South Milford. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Omar F. Hafner 1923-2009 Omar Franklin Hafner, 85, Pigeon, passed away on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe. He was born in Kilmanagh on May 5, 1923, the son of the late Rudolph and Louise (Werschky) Hafner. Sixty-seven years ago, on April 25, 1942, Omar was united in marriage to Dorothy R. Dubs at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Linkville. She survives him. Omar was an area farmer and agricultural products representative, selling DeKalb corn seed for more than 40 years. He was a member and former officer of the Owendale Lions Club. Omar was a former Owen Gage school board member and a former member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, Bach, where he held several leadership positions. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially Tiger baseball. He was an avid gardener. He dearly loved his family and taught all of his grandchildren how to fish. He and Dorothy enjoyed driving throughout the area farms looking for turkey and deer. Omar was a member and usher at Cross Lutheran Church, Pigeon. In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Omar is survived by three daughters, Donna M. (Dale) Schuette, Elkton, Diana (Dick) Hennrick, Bay City and Mary L. Ronnie Everett Avra, 59, of Quincy passed away April 24, 2009 at his home. He was born April 18, 1950 in Union City, Ind. to Everett and Martha (Thornburg) Avra. He married Linda Foschi on Aug. 21, 1976 in Coldwater. Ronnie graduated from Quincy High School in 1968. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in the U.S. Army 101st Airborne as a telecommunications operator. He was also a member of the National Guard for 6 years. After serving in the military Ronnie went to work for Acorn Building Components in Quincy. Ronnie then worked various jobs in the Coldwater Quincy area including driving truck. He became self-employed as owner operator of Avra Trucking until he retired due to his health. He enjoyed hunting, entertaining family and friends, and especially spending time with his grandson. He is survived by his wife Linda; two daughters, Tami Avra of Battle Creek and Amber Avra (Lloyd Troxtle) of Alexandria, Ind.; grandson, Caden Troxtle; mother Martha Avra of Quincy; sister, Judy Avra (Bruce) of Coldwater; sister-in-law, Karen Avra of Coldwater; three brothers, Keith Avra (Holly) of Quincy, Freddie Avra (Josephine) of Quincy and Billie Avra (Shelley) of Quincy; seven nephews, Shawn Avra (Mary), Corey Avra (Michelle), Michael Avra (Stephanie), Chris Fulk (Teresa), Matt Avra (Kelli), Ted Avra, Ryan Ward (Holly); three nieces, Muffin Avra (Travis), Bobbie Avra, Natalie Avra; and 14 great-nephews and nieces. STEPHEN H. CHIGAS CLIFFORD Stephen H. Chigas, age 90, died Thursday, April 23, 2009 at Covenant Health Care Hospital in Saginaw. He was born September 6, 1918 in Peabody, MA., son to the late Harry and Despina (Pappas) Chigas. He was educated in Massachusetts and worked with his father on the family farm until WWII when he joined the U.S. Navy in January of 1943 serving 4 years in the Atlantic and Pacific areas, being honorably discharged in November of 1945. He married Sally J. Ross October 25, 1952 in Almont, Michigan. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked with his father for a couple of years and then moved to the Detroit area, where he got a job working for an Automotive Experimental Company, making small parts for future model cars. He attended a trade school to learn the Proto Type Trade, helping the company progress, spending the last ten years in supervision. He retired after 30 years with the company. Upon his retirement in 1976, he and his wife decided tomove to California to be closer to their son and his family. Stephen and his wife were members of Glenkirk Presbyterian Church in Glendora, California, where they were very active. He served as deacon, greeter and Stephen s Minister and also was a member of the Promise Keepers. He was a spiritual Volunteer at Foothill Presbyterian Hospital and two local nursing homes. He was a member of the Almont-Dryden F & AM #51 Masonic Lodge, as well as Glendora Masonic Lodge F & AM #404 in Glendora, California and was a charter member of Foothills High Twelve Club #709 in Glendora, California. He also was a member of the V.F.W. Frazer Post 6691 in Frazer. He leaves his wife Sally of 56 years, one son; Harry (Gerda) Chigas of Loveland, Colorado, one grandchild; Stephen & Johanna Chigas of Loveland, Colorado, one great granddaughter; Madison Jean Chigas of Loveland, Colorado, three sisters; Stacia Martin of Peabody, MA., Sally St. Claire of Danvers, MA. and Angie (Plato) Vonzalites of Lynn, MA. Heis preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Nicholas & Arthur and sisters, Mary and Bess. Stephen will be best remembered for his love of his family and kindness to everyone he met. Funeral services were held at the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette with Pastor Chris Wolf officiating. Interment followed the service at West Burlington Cemetery in Silverwood with full military honor's. Memorials may be donated to the Marlette First Presbyterian Church. Steven D. Mays, age 52 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early April 25, 2009, at Sturgis Hospital. He was born July 7, 1956, in Vicksburg, Mich., a son to Richard and Susan (Bodnar) Mays. Steve had resided in Sturgis for the past 12 years. Prior to coming to Sturgis he had lived in Mendon, Michigan where he graduated from Mendon High School with the class of 1975. On Oct. 10, 1998, he married Cindy Gerkin at the Centreville United Methodist Church in Centreville. For the past 29 years he had been employed by General Motors. He was currently working at the Truck and Bus Plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana Prior to that he had worked at the Hydromatic Plant in Three Rivers and several other G.M. plants. Before joining General Motors he had worked at Kalamazoo Roof Truss and Peterson Springs in Mendon. Steve enjoyed going to drag races, collecting baseball cards, fishing with his father, tinkering with cars, caring for his cattle and horses and working around farm. He was also an avid Detroit Tiger fan and he loved his dogs. He is survived by his loving wife, Cindy; father, Richard Mays of Kalamazoo; three sisters, Carol (Dean) Perry, Pam (Jay) Hollingsworth and Vicki (Bob) Norris all of Vicksburg; two brothers, Richard “Junior” Mays of Kalamazoo and Chuck (Judi) Mays of Three Rivers; mother-in-law, Fran Gerkin of Sturgis; sister-in-law, Anna (Dave) Watts of Sturgis; two brothers-in-law, Ernie Gerkin of Sturgis and Jim (Donna) Gerkin of Three Rivers and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother; father-in-law, Ernest “Red” Gerkin; and nephew, Andrew Perry. The family will receive friends and relatives from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091. VIRGINIA A. KERSCHENHEITER CROSWELL Virginia A. Kerschenheiter, age 81, of Croswell, passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 in her home. She was born on December 19, 1927 in Applegate, daughter of the late Charles Benjamin and Lila Blanch (Fockler) Cudney. She married Frank J. "Kersch" Kerschenheiter on August 2, 1949 in Croswell. He passed away on August 31, 1999. Virginia was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Croswell. She was a telephone operator at Michigan Bell, worked at Aunt Jane's Pickles and Sanilac Jeffersonian. She retired as a teacher's aid at Croswell/Lexington Schools. She was also a member of the American Legion Post #255, Auxiliary, Croswell. Virginia enjoyed bird watching, reading, rose gardening and her dogs. Surviving are her three children; Sue Kinsley of Lexington, George (Carol) of Mio, Kay (Tom) Youatt of Harbor Beach. one brother; Robert (Anita) Cudney of Croswell, five grandchildren; Ralph (Laura) Kinsley, Ben (Maribeth) Kinsley, Kelli Kerschenheiter, Rye and Travis Youatt, two step-grandsons; Ben and Ryan Newcomb, several nieces and nephews and a dear friend, Bea O'Connor. Virginia A. Driskill, 86, of Hudson passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at her home. She was born July 4, 1922, in Buchanan, Mich., the daughter of Clarence and Loral (Hicks) Arnold. She married James D. Driskill on Jan. 24, 1945, in Buchanan and he preceded her in death on Dec. 30, 1963. Virginia was Salutatorian of the class of 1940, where in her Salutatory Address she told her classmates to “challenge their minds.” She was co-editor of her nationally recognized high school annual edition, The Pines. She received a scholarship to the University of Michigan and while attending college she left for Spartan Flight School after Pearl Harbor. She trained pilots and logged more than 1,200 flight hours. She married and raised five children. Upon her husband’s death in 1963, she took over the Bi-County Herald with the assistance of Dorothy Barlett at the shop and Edna Lauder at home. Virginia loved animals, especially her wonderful pets, Rags and Hobo. In retirement, Virginia pursued many hobbies such as cross-stitch, knitting, needlepoint, reading, and sewing and her beloved crossword puzzles. She made Christmas stockings for her family and children all over the community using a pattern given to her by Kay Taylor. She loved her church and served and supported the Hudson Public Library and the Hudson Museum. Virginia supported Thorn Hospital Auxiliary by selling knives, attended council meetings, and wrote letters to the editor to share her concerns for the Hudson community. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Surviving Virginia are one son, James (Patricia) Driskill of Hudson; three daughters, Diana (Thomas) Miller of Wadsworth, Ohio, Deborah Speller of Fairhope, Ala., and Merri Driskill of Hudson. She had 10 grandchildren; James (Heidi) Driskill, Jennifer (Joe) Linde, Dr. Todd (Jennifer) Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Tyler (Rebecca) Driskill, Chad (Erin) Speller, Bryan (Jessica) Speller, Joshua (Brenda) Speller, Scott DeLine and Abigail DeLine, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Marsha (Peacock) Driskill; one sister, Charlotte; and brother-in-law William Weaver. Funeral services for Virginia will be Saturday May 2, 2009, at 1 p.m. at First United Methodist Church of Hudson with the Rev. Fritz Kruse and the Rev. Ray Wightman officiating. Interment will follow in Waldron Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson and on Saturday from noon until the time of service at the church. Virginia L. Wyman, beloved wife, mother and sister, passed away early in the morning of April 27, 2009, after battling cancer for the past year. Virginia was born on Dec. 11, 1941, and lived in Constantine, Mich. She is the daughter of Read and Gwendolyn Langworthy. Virginia valued education and was an excellent student; she graduated from Constantine High School as the salutatorian in the Class of 1959. She attended Western Michigan University the next fall. On Sept. 2, 1962, she married Bruce Wyman in Constantine. She transferred to Central Michigan University to join Bruce. She received a bachelor and master’s degree in mathematics. She went on to become a member of the Central Michigan University faculty teaching math for the next year and a half. In 1965, she moved to Linden, where she taught high school math for several years. She then stayed at home to raise her family. In 1980, she attended the University of Michigan and received a degree in computer science. After teaching computer science for a few years at the University of Michigan, she went to work as a Systems Analyst for EDS in Flint until she retired in 2002. In 2003, she and Bruce built their retirement home and moved to Corey Lake in Three Rivers, where they had spent their summers and she spent her childhood. Not one to fully retire, she taught adult education in Three Rivers, and was the director of the Literacy Council for St. Joseph County. On March 17, 2009, she was honored by St. Joseph County for all of her contributions toward the Literacy Council. Also, she volunteered as a Friend of the Library at the Three Rivers Public Library. Virginia loved to read, travel, walk, sail, kayak and spend time with the Red Hat Society. She is survived by her husband, Bruce; her son, Timothy Wyman, and his wife, Laura; grandchildren Ansley and Kelsey of Atlanta; a daughter, Suzanne Wyman-Rubinstein, and her husband, Nir, of Atlanta; and her brother, Dr. James Langworthy of Honolulu. She was preceded in death by her father, Read Langworthy, and mother, Gwendolyn Langworthy-Brown. Relatives and friends will be received 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Eley Funeral Home in Constantine. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Missionary Church in Constantine. Virginia V. Rossman 90, of Litchfield, passed away Monday, April 27, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  She was born June 16, 1918, in Coldwater to Leon and Cecelia (Hudson) Anton. Virginia graduated from Coldwater High School in 1936 and Western Michigan University in 1943 with a teaching certificate.  She taught in the Coldwater and Sturgis Schools and was also a substitute teacher in the area for several years. Virginia was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Coldwater and the Litchfield Sorosis Club. On June 25, 1960, she married Albert Rossman and he survives. Also surviving are son Mark (Melanie) Rossman of Litchfield, sister Genevieve Lacko of Kalamazoo and grandchildren Veronica and Shannon Rossman of Litchfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, 11 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church, Coldwater, with Father Brian Stanley officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Girard. Visitation is scheduled Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield. Memorials are suggested to the Litchfield District Library or St. Charles Catholic Church, Coldwater. |

Vivian Martin, 82, of Morenci passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009, at the Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. She was born on Aug. 8, 1926, in Fairfield Township, the daughter of Irwin and Lillian (Williams) Hambrook. On Sept. 6, 1947, in Sand Creek she married John H. Martin. He preceded her in death on Nov. 21, 1991. Vivian was a graduate of Metamora High School. She lived most of her life in the Morenci area where she was a member of the Morenci First Baptist Church. She was formerly employed at Simplex in Adrian and at the former Fayette Tubular in Fayette, Ohio, from where she retired in 1989. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca (Kim) Hiatt of Adrian; a son, John Michael Martin of Waldron; seven grandchildren, five greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Gladys Hinkle of Lyons, Ohio. Besides her husband, John, Vivian was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mabel Brodbeck, Edrie Rogers, Velma Keith and Bertha Hambrook; and two brothers, Leland and Earl Hambrook. Funeral service will be on Saturday, May 2, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Morenci First Baptist Church with the Rev. Ned Newlin officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. He was born on September 1, 1950 in Wichita Falls, Texas. He married Laurie Pohl of Palms, Michigan in 1973. Wayne graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1968, and graduated from the Minneapolis School of Anesthesia in 1981. He had practiced CRNA for 28 years. He spent his final 13 years practicing with the anesthesia group of Oktibbeha County Hospital in Starkville, Mississippi. Surviving are his wife; Laurie Todd of Columbus, Mississippi, one son; Travis of Madison, Wisconsin, one daughter; Lisa of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his mother; Jean Lynch of Wichita Falls, Texas, three brothers; Herbert Todd, Jr., Stan Todd and Andy Todd, all of Wichita Falls, Texas, two sisters; Linda Cavasos of Fort Worth, Texas and Betty Browning of Wichita Falls, Texas. Wanda J. Pope, age 70, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 22, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born April 17, 1939, in Fort Worth, Texas, a daughter of the late Marshall and Vera (Norris) Rhodes. Wanda had resided in Sturgis since 1976, coming from California. On Feb. 19, 1957, she married Stanley Pope in Grand Rapids. Wanda had been employed as a dietitian at Sturgis Hospital and had also worked in the offices of the Material Service Company in Chicago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and was proud of the fact that she had received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Wanda enjoyed traveling, being in the outdoors and working in her flower gardens. Wanda had many interests and hobbies, but the single most important thing in her life was her family. She was totally devoted to her husband and children. She is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Stanley; two daughters, Elizabeth and Kim Pope of Elkhart, Ind., and Tracie (Pope) Townsend of Sturgis; a son, Sean L. (Laurie) Pope of Centreville; a granddaughter, Sonny (Caleb) Pope of Zeeland; a great-granddaughter; Lorillie Lee Pope; a sister, Patsy Carlson of Illinois; two brothers, Chalmer Rhodes of Kentucky and Marlee Rhodes of California; a brother-in-law, Warren Brandebury of Sturgis; a sister-in-law, Karen (Dallas) Willis of Florida; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, including a special cousin, Ron Brandebury of Sturgis. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Mark Joseph Pope and Jeffery Lee Pope; a sister, Hazel Marie Brandebury; and a brother-in-law, Burt Carlson.
