Andrew (Andy) Charles Smith, 36, of Three Rivers, passed away Monday, May 25, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Andrew was born in Three Rivers on Jan. 4, 1973. He attended both Constantine and Niles schools, and was most recently employed at Vaupell in Constantine. Andrew is the son of Suzanne Smith and the grandson of Valeta Smith. He is also survived by his Uncle Chris (Mary) Smith and three cousins, Joshua, Thomas and Katlyn. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Glen L. Smith. Cremation has taken place. Audrey Mae Bailey Lung, 82, of Florence, S.C., and formerly of Sturgis, Mich., went to her Heavenly Home on Saturday, May 23, 2009, in a Florence health care facility after an illness. Ms. Lung was born in Florence, a daughter of the late Fred and Edna Juanita Garrett Bailey.  She retired in 1985 from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis.  She was a member of the Moose Lodge #579 and the V.F.W. Post 1355, both in Sturgis, and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church in Florence.  She was an avid bowler and golfer, and loved playing cards. Ms. Lung loved spending time with grandchildren, family, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Evelyn Lee. Surviving are two sons, Harold Eugene Lung of Florence and Richard D. (Carol) Lung of Sturgis; a brother, Fred D. (Tid) Bailey of Florence; two sisters, Emily Williams and Sylvia (Heyward) Miller, both of Florence; a special friend, John Smith of Battle Creek; two grandchildren, Jason Richard (Wendy) Lung of St. John, Ind., and Janel Rae (Jack) Conklin of New Haven, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Adam Scott Lung, Miriam Rae Lung and Maya Janel Conklin; and a number of nieces and nephews. A committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Friendship United Methodist Church Cemetery in Florence.  Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence is assisting the family with arrangements. Barbara Jean Allen, age 33, of Mendon, died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at her home, following a long illness. She was born Dec. 12, 1975, in Three Rivers and was the daughter of Roger and Nancy (Smith) Allen. Barbara attended the Pathfinder School in Centreville, where she was a cheerleader for the Special Olympics. She also worked at ARCH Workshop in Sturgis and briefly at McDonald’s in Three Rivers. Barbara loved to ride horses, and showed the family horse, Sundance, at the county fair. She enjoyed playing video games, listening to music and singing. Barbara is survived by her mother and step-father, Nancy nd Jon Crabtree of Mendon; seven siblings, Brenda Austin (Carl) and Lori Higgins (Greg) of Mendon, Kathy Dahl (John) of Arizona, Mike Allen of Los Angeles, Dan Allen (Judy) of Killeen, Texas, Ashley Allen of Kalamazoo, and Scott Allen of Sturgis; two step-sisters, Amy Campbell of Kalamazoo and Luci Falkenberg (Andrew) of Portage; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Roger Allen. The family will received friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chuck Lambdin, pastor of the Crossroads Missionary Church, officiating. Burial will be in Dutton Cemetery. Betty lived at Nandi Hills Group Home in Flint. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Viola Hawley; 2 brothers. July 27, 1932 - May 22, 2009 Charles Don Wilson, 76, of Morenci passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon, Ohio, following a period of failing health. He was born July 27, 1932, in Fairfield Township, Mich., the son of H. F. and Ruby (Yates) Wilson. He married Lola Sue Collar on December 20, 1953, in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Don was a life long Morenci area resident and retired from General Broach in Morenci in 1994. He graduated from Morenci High School Class of 1950 and served in the US Army from 1952 to 1954.  Don loved music and played guitar for a number of years. He also enjoyed woodworking and cooking.  Surviving Don besides his wife, Lola of Morenci, are three children, Jo Rea (Jerry) Keene and Connie Mirelez, all of Morenci, and Donald Alan (Cassie) Wilson of Kentwood, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy (Missy) Keene and Deborah Mirelez of Morenci, Joshua (Heidi) Keene and Nathan Mirelez of Adrian, Gideon and Greyden Wilson of Kentwood and Jessica Mirelez of Grand Rapids; and seven great-grandchildren, Marissa, Jared and MacKenzie Keene and Ethan McCowan, all of Morenci, and Chynna and Malik Mirelez and Heliel Williams, all of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Jay (Nora) Wilson of Fairfield and Robert (Jan) Wilson of Morenci, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, I.C. and Jr. Wilson, and a daughter, Linda Sue, in infancy.  Funeral services for Don will be Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Pastor Dennis Owens officiating. Charles F. ‘Chuck’ Norris of North Adams passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the “Mac” McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born June 24, 1938 in North Adams the son of Robert and Gladys (Leonard) Norris. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bonnie (Bonsteel) Norris whom he married on Oct. 9, 1965. He is also survived by one son, Scott (Vicki) Norris of Saginaw; two grandchildren, Dalton and Dylan Norris; one brother, Larry (Cindy) Norris of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Sally (Tom) Andrews of Reading, and Amy (Daniel) Moore of Oviedo, Fla; one sister-in-law, Marilee Norris of Tecumseh; mother-in-law, Dorothy Bonsteel of North Adams; step-mother, Norma Norris of Hillsdale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Norris. Chuck served his country in the United States Marine Reserve. He worked for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections in Jackson for 30 years and retired in June of 1997. He also enjoyed farming and gardening and spending time outdoors. At his request cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Charles F. “Chuck” Norris will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Chester F. Emerson, 74, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009, in the loving presence of the Lord in Sylvania, Ohio. Chester was born on Jan. 27, 1935, to James Russell Emerson and Donnie Isbell Uptain in Alabama. He met the love of his life, Ruby Sanderson, and the two were joined together on July 2, 1954, in Adrian, Mich. Together they shared over 54 years of marriage and happy memories.  Chester and Ruby made their home in Blissfield where they raised three children.  Chester made his living at Ace Drill in Adrian for over 30 years, and then went into business for himself working on tool and cutter grinding. He enjoyed many family activities and trips back home to Alabama. Chester enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and most recently his great grandchildren. Chester, along with his wife, were faithful members of the Blissfield Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Ruby Emerson of Blissfield; two children, Charles (Heidi) Emerson of Britton, and Janine (Doug) Emerson of Monroe; son-in-law Jerry Lippens of Blissfield; four grandchildren, Amanda (Jr) Iffland of Blissfield, Nathan Fuller of Monroe, Bradley (Tiffany Smith) Emerson of Sylvania, and Mackenzie Lippens of Blissfield; and his first two great-grandchildren, Blake Edward Iffland and Samantha Jean Emerson. Also surviving are two brothers, Clovis (Earlene) Emerson and Gene (Donna) Emerson, both of Alabama; two sisters, Earlene McKinney of Alabama, and Willie Mae (George) Hagy of Blissfield; and many special nieces and nephews. Chester joins those who went before him in heaven including his parents, youngest daughter Robin Lippens, eight brothers, and five sisters. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Blissfield Baptist Church in Blissfield, with Rev. Tom Frantz officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield. Visiting hours will be Wednesday for 2 to 8 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association. Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, to the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years before moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Washington and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter-in-law, Diana Lundgren and a sister, Marie Alexander. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Bay Port United Methodist Church or the Bay Port Historical Society. Arrangements were made by the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon.

Darrell graduated from Quincy High School in 1956 and served in the US Army. On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Erma Birkey in Coldwater. Darrell worked in sales at Dynamax Corp. in Elkhart for 10 years and previously for Carriage RV in Millersburg. He was a former member of the FFA and Flying Hooves 4-H Club in Quincy and served as a judge at fairs and shows. Darrell also enjoyed traveling, fishing and golfing. Mostly he loved his family, friends and enjoying life. Surviving are his wife Erma Curtis, Constantine, sister  Diannia (Jim) Smith, Mesa, Ariz., brothers Dennis Curtis, White City, Ore., Doran Curtis, Quincy, brother in law Dale Paul, Quincy, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Lloyd Curtis and Margaret Jeannette Curtis Wilcox, brother Leland Curtis and sister Karen Paul. Donna Grace Bystry 85, of Monroe, Wis., and formerly of Bronson, Mich., died May 22   at the Angelus Retirement Community in Monroe.  She had been in failing health.                                       Donna was born on Aug. 27, 1923, a daughter of Robert L. and Myrna (Rogers) Kellett in Orland, Ind. She was raised in Orland and  graduated from Orland High School in 1941.  She married Edward Bystry on Dec. 26, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Rectory in Bronson.  They were lifelong residents of Bronson. Prior to her retirement, she worked for the Bronson Public School System at Anderson School for over 20 years.   She was a member of the Branch County Historical Society and was active in their fund raising efforts.  She enjoyed the Bronson Public Library, sewing, crafts, crossword  puzzles, dominos with close friends, and visiting her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Edward; her children, son Michael (Cheryl) Bystry of Monroe,  daughter Linda Whitehouse of Evanston, Ill., son Joseph Bystry of Flowermound, Texas, daughter Kay (Mike) Walsh of Crystal Lake, Ill., son Robert (Jenifer) Bystry of Glen Ellyn, Ill., son Larry Bystry of Fishers Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Barkowski; her sisters-in law, Velma Bystry and Martha Kellett; and many nieces and nephews.  She was proceeded in death by her parents; her sister Alice, in infancy, her sister Mary Jane Boes, her brother Robert W. Kellett, her sister Ann Sellers and brother-in law Donald Sellers, brothers-in-law Albert Bystry and Frank Barkowski, and brother and sister-in-law Vern and Eleanor Galloway.  Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, with Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of  Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church, with  Father Richard Fritz officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to Branch County Historical Society, the Bronson Public Library and Hospice of Monroe, Wis.  


 


 

EDNA ROSANNA VATTER SANDUSKY Edna Rosanna Vatter, age 94, of Sandusky, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Marlette Hospice Residence. She was born May 12, 1914 in Snover, Michigan the daughter of the late Edwin and Rosanna (Richards) Hill. Edna married Donald Nicholas Vatter on March 5, 1932 in Snover, Michigan. He passed away July 17, 1982. She was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church, Sandusky. She was a nurses aide for many years at the Sandusky Hospital. Edna lived with and was lovingly cared for by Tom and Nancy Miller of Brown City for eight and one half years. She is survived by three daughters; Jeanette McLeish of North Carolina, Ruth Ann (Harry) Walker of Sandusky, Karen (Don) Innes of North Carolina, ten grandchildren; Toni Trexler of North Carolina, Daniel (Cindy) McLeish of Texas, Lynn Nichol of North Carolina, Vohn (Tammy) McLeish of Texas, Suzette Lautner of Dexter, Nicholas (Bonnie) Walker of Minnesota, Rich (Sandy) Innes of North Carolina, Bret Innes of North Carolina, Shelby Innes of Port Huron, Melissa Innes of Port Huron, thirteen great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by one son-in-law; Earl McLeish, one grandson; Chuck Lautner, six sisters; Mary Clark, Lila Padden, Ada Waun, Jennie Armstead, Myrtle Kramp and Carrie Snell, four brothers; Walter, Orville, Clark and Milo Hill. Edsel F. Burnor, age 90, of Britton, passed away May 22, 2009. Edsel was born Nov. 29, 1918, in Deerfield, Mich., the son of Floyd and Edna (Opel) Burnor. On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Margaret Osburn and she survives. He was a graduate of Deerfield High School. Edsel was a veteran of World War II, serving as a military police in the Pacific. He retired from Tecumseh Products after many years of service. While working at the Products, he also engaged in farming. After retiring, he spent winters in Florida and enjoyed gardening, farming and fishing.  Besides his wife,  Margaret, he is survived by his sons, Richard Burnor and Larry (Amy) Burnor;  grandchildren, Jeffrey (Erika) Burnor and Sarah Burnor and great-granddaughter, Isobelle Burnor. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Johnny; sister, Ruth Langschied and brother, Max.  Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the  J. Ernest D. “Dewey” Gamber, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 21, 1927, in Huntington, Indiana, the son of Clyde and Florence (Lambright) Gamber. He is survived by two brothers, Richard D. Gamber of Fowlerville and Charles E. (Julia) Thorp of Coldwater; two sisters, Mary M. (Jim) Dietz of Hillsdale and Alberta M. Lapham of Punta Gorda, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Erma Bilby. Dewey retired from Addison Products in 1988 after over 25 years of service and he enjoyed eating lunch every day at the Senior Center in Hillsdale and visiting with his friends. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Ernest D. “Dewey” Gamber will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale beginning at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 19 with Pastor Steve Smith officiating. Ethel Rita Collyer, age 90, of Adrian died Friday, May 22, 2009 at the Lenawee Medical Care Facility. She was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Petersburg to Theodore and Mary Ann (Miller) Miller. She was married to Clifford Collyer on Feb. 26, 1936, in Adrian. He preceded her in death in 1991 after 53 years of marriage. Ethel had been employed by Bixby Medical Center as a nursing assistant, retiring in 1989. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Ethel was known as Grandma by many new moms and babies. She was special enough to be with her daughters when they delivered six of her grandsons and bathed and cradled them first. She was known for her beautiful yard and flower garden. Ethel loved to sew, collect recipes, crocheting, and to cook many birthdays and Sunday dinners and anything that pertained to her family. Ethel is survived by a son, Larry (Kay) Collyer, of Benton Harbor; four daughters, Karin (Jim) Osika of Twentynine Palms, Calif., E. Ann Zemnickas of Farmington Hills, Mary Willnow (the late Melvin) of Palmyra and Jackie (Virgil) Osgood of Adrian; a sister, Margaret (Leon) Brugger of Adrian; 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, three granddaughters, one great-grandson and nine brothers and sisters. The funeral liturgy will be offered Thursday, May 28, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Bob Schramm presiding. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. He married Clara Ellen Hill on July 14, 1951 in Dryden. Eugene served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Military Police. FRANK W. WILLIS LEXINGTON Frank W. Willis, age 95, of Lexington, died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born January 12, 1914 in Detroit, son of the late Frank L. and Edna (Vincent) Willis. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kay and his second wife, Enid (Davis). Frank was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Lexington Lodge #61 F & AM, Lexington O.E.S. Chapter #237, R.A.M. #41, Past Commander Lexington V.F.W. He married the former Mary Gladys Graham April 21, 1935 and following her passing married Pearl Grindley. Mr. Missimer, a lifelong farmer, as well as a skilled toolmaker, concluded his working life with the Michigan State Highway Department for 10 years. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and a lifetime active member of the Tucson Model A Ford Club. He traveled all over the U.S. He was well liked and entertained often at Sanctuary at the Oaks, singing, whistling and telling stories. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include son, Roger (Jane) Missimer of Muskegon; daughter, Lucile Missimer of Haslett; grandchildren, David (Linda) Missimer of Illinois, Catherine (William) Marlin of Colorado, John (Keri) Missimer of Illinois; great-grandchildren, Cody Missimer, Wilson Marlin, Jane Marlin, Abigail Missimer, John David Marlin, Andrew Missimer; sister, Evelyn Jost of Nevada and special friend, Eva Green. Lennard, age 70, of Adrian, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center.  Jack was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Adrian, the son of George and Frances (Maybee) Lennard.  He graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1956. He then attended Adrian College. On Oct. 28, 1989, Jack married Donna Vogel in Adrian. Donna, his wife of over 19 years, survives.  Jack and Donna enjoyed many years of traveling together to historical sites and antiquing throughout the United States. Jack was the owner/operator of his family’s business, Adrian Laundry Company, for 22 years.  He worked with the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Department in their mounted division. In 1992, Jack retired from the Madison Township Fire Department where he had served as a volunteer firefighter for 31 years.  In his retirement, Jack drove truck for L & M Trucking and made deliveries for Performance Automotive, NAPA, and Hubbard Auto Center. He worked at the Lenawee Country Club as a groundskeeper. He also worked at Lynwood Manor as a driver where he was dearly loved by the patients and staff. In addition to his wife, Jack is survived by two sons, Raymond (Kara) Lennard and Mark Lennard; a granddaughter, Nicole Lennard, and close friends, Annie Ringkvist and her son, Daniel, all of Adrian; a brother, Thomas Lennard of Coldwater; his mother-in-law, Marguerite Vogel of Adrian; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral service for Jack will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with Madison Fire Department Chaplain Chris Cadwallader officiating. James A. Kohl 1933-2009 James A. "Jim" Kohl, 75, Pigeon, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 21, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 20, 1933 on a farm in Bad Axe and graduated in 1951 from Bay Port High School. He served with the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean War. He was united in marriage on December 23, 1950 to Lorraine B. Henne in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on June 16, 1998. On February 24, 2001 he married Susan J. Kaplan, who survives him. Jim's first job was making boxes, for five cents each, at the Bay Port Fish Company docks. He retired in 1996 as D.P.W. Supervisor, having worked for the Village of Pigeon for 17 years. He was previously employed at a variety of jobs: construction, service station, Bay Port Elevator, farming and selling agricultural seed. He had also been the Bay Port Constable. He loved his community, serving as Pigeon Village President from 1996-2001, as well as village councilman, where he was currently serving. He enjoyed Laker sports, concerts, and plays. He was an avid supporter of U of M sports, particularly football. He was also a fan of the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings and Frank Sinatra. In his younger years, he enjoyed duck hunting and playing softball. He loved his family and friends. He was a library volunteer who looked forward to taking books to his friends at Country Bay Village. He was an active member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church, where he served as Administrative Council president and sang in the church choir as well as the community chorus. He is survived by his wife, Susan, Pigeon; three daughters, Kristina (David) Dietzel, Houghton Lake, Pamela King, Bad Axe and Cheri (Paul) Garno, Birch Run; two sons, Darin (Lori) Kohl, Reed City and Brian (Tiffanee) Kohl, Bay City; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and his in-laws, Robert and Marietta Tornow, Sun City West, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; two brothers, Orlo and Byron and three sisters, Bessi, Beryl and Shirley. Funeral Services were held Sunday, May 24 at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. Rev. Douglas Mater officiated with burial in New Bay Port Cemetery. Leroy Wayne “Bud” Tout, age 78 of Three Rivers, Mich., died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, where he had been a patient for six days. He was born in Centerville, Ind., on Jan. 26, 1931, the son of Olin and Lola (Baker) Tout. Following graduation from Centerville High School he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 through 1954. Bud took business and accounting courses at Western Michigan University over the next four years. He was employed at Continental Can Company in Three Rivers for 25 years, and upon the plant closing worked for Crest in Shelbyville, Ill., for 5 years, then returned to the Fonda Group plant in Three Rivers. Following his first retirement, he worked for Lynch Oil Company, the Three Rivers Post Office and the White Pigeon Post Office over the next 14 years. Bud was a member of the Three Rivers Elks. He enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Sauganash Country Club. He bowled in leagues while living in Illinois. He enjoyed all sports, camping, fishing, and banjo music. He especially enjoyed travels with his wife, and had visited every state except Hawaii. Leroy was married to Dorothy “Dottie” Farley on Dec, 31, 1959, in Three Rivers. She survives, along with three children, Bobby Price, Lori Holder (Tim) and Michael Tout, all of Three Rivers; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Strait of Sturgis; a sister-in-law, Joan Halsey of Bellevue; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Slater; and a brother, Thomas Halsey. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel of Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 523 Maple St., Three Rivers, with Pastor Kyle Foster officiating. Military interment will be in Riverside Cemetery by Hice-Shutes American Legion Post #170. Memorials may be directed to either the Olympic Bible Project, or the Mount Pleasant Mission Project, both in care of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, or the St. Joseph County Chapter of the Michigan Right to Life. MARVIN MERL WINTER CASS CITY Marvin 'Marv' Merl Winter, age 71, of Cass City, Michigan died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in his home. He was born June 9, 1937 to Merle and Lucille (Rockefeller) Winter in Cass City, Michigan. He graduated from Cass City High School in 1955. Marvin married Janice O'Dell June 20, 1959 in Sutton Methodist Church, Caro. They have celebrated 49 years of marriage. In 1969 Marv went into business for himself establishing Winter's Truck Sales. Winter's Truck Sales sold new and used truck and farm equipment. Marv was still operating the business until his death. In 1975 he established Colony House Catering Hall & Blue Room Bar. The Colony House hosted numerous wedding receptions, concerts, corporate events and various trade shows. It was in operation until 1998. Marv was a member of Cass City Masonic Tyler Lodge #317, Caro Moose Lodge #1049, and Elf Khurafeh Shrine Center, Saginaw. Marv was a NASCAR fan. He loved watching and attending race events. He alsoloved watching the Detroit sports teams: Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. He was an avid card player. Marv had a great love for animals, in particular, his pet goose, Charlie and his pet lion, Sue Ellen that he raised for 14 years. But his real gift was meeting new people and quickly and easily making friends. He truly loved being surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his wife; Janice, one daughter; Kelli (Charles) Hendrick of Decker, two sons; Kirk (Lisa) Winter of Cass City, Kent (Jennifer) Winter of Midlothian, Virginia, two exchange student sons; Paulo Leme and Gabriel Paggiaro, both from Sao Paulo, Brazil, grandchildren; Lindsey (Joel) Brinkman, Ashley Hendrick, Carley Hendrick, Brennen Winter, Chase Winter and Conner Winter, one sister; Marion Longuski of Cass City, two brothers-in-law; Chuck (Joanne) O'Dell of Caseville, Carson (Jane) O'Dell of Caro, nine nieces and nephews, one very special friend of the family, JoAnn Alexander of Cass City. He was precededin death by his parents; Merle and Lucille Winter, one brother-in-law; Eugene Longuski, father-in-law and mother-in-law; Clayton and Rayola O'Dell. Marlin Keith Potter, 85, longtime Hillsdale resident died Monday, May 11, 2009, while traveling home from Florida. He was born in Reading Feb. 25, 1924, to Ora and Katie (Richardson) Potter. He graduated from Reading High School in 1942. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the Pacific. He was assigned duties as Flight Engineer and Top Turret Gunner and flew forty missions over Iwo Jima and neighboring islands aboard the B-24 "Star Eyes." After the war he returned to Michigan and attended Michigan State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in education before returning to the Hillsdale area to teach biology and coach football, basketball and baseball. In 1952 he began work at Hillsdale Tool and Manufacturing Company as shipping clerk. Over the years he served in various executive capacities until reaching the presidency in 1983. He retired in 1989 to enjoy golf, fishing and travel. Group affiliations have included the First Presbyterian Church, Hillsdale City Council, vice president of the American Cancer Society, vice president of the United Way, president of the Lions Club, board member at Key Opportunities, Masonic Lodge, American Legion, the Michigan State University Alumni Association, Hillsdale Golf and Country Club and the President's Club at Hillsdale College. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Kenneth, Carlyle and Robert and twin daughters, Catherine and Christine. He is survived by his wife, Jane (Scott) Potter; a daughter, Rebecca (Eli) Michaels of Chicago; a son, Jack (Elizabeth) Potter of Grand Haven and three grandchildren, John, Tom and Amy Potter. Funeral services for Marlin Potter will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsdale with Pastor Patti Beckman officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Melvin was born Jan. 14, 1935, in Lancaster, Pa., a son of the late Peter and Amanda (Stoltzfus) Stauffer. On Sept. 26, 1959, Melvin married Clara Yoder in Leonidas. He had worked in the RV manufacturing business, retiring from Van Guard Industries of Colon in 1997. Mel enjoyed being with family and friends, and especially delighted in his grandchildren.  He loved walking in the woods and seeing the beauty of God’s creation. Melvin was a member of the New Covenant Christian Fellowship in Burr Oak. He is survived by his wife, Clara, of Mendon; a son, Ernie (Pam) Stauffer of Colon; a daughter, Carol (Joseph) Kotva of Elkhart, Ind.; four grandchildren, Aaron and Lindsay Stauffer and Joseph and Matthew Kotva; a brother, Christian (Leah) Stauffer of Sturgis; six sisters, Mary (Addona) Nissley of Harrisburg, Va., Verna Swartzentruber of Goshen, Ind., Anna Belle Stauffer of Goshen, Ruth (Lew) Stoll of Hillsdale, Elsie (Mike) Showalter of Three Rivers, and Marion (Doyle) Carpenter of Centreville; and many nieces and nephews. Jan. 29, 1936 — May 21, 2009 Robert (Bob) Parish passed away quietly in his sleep Thursday morning, May 21, 2009, at his home, of natural causes. He was born Jan. 29, 1936, in Meridian, Miss., to Cora and Enoch Parish.  He grew up in and attended Jacksonville, N.C., Public Schools. Bob moved to Michigan in the 1950s where he met his wife, Harriet Jo-Ann Carter. Bob was active in the Labor Union Movement in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. He began his janitorial business in the 1950s/1960s, then moved on to work construction in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and then onto GM where he remained until retirement in the 1990s.  Bob is best known for his work and leadership in the community with such projects as the East Side Project, East Side Basketball Camp and as one of the founders of The Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. He served as President of United Way Lenawee County for many years. He was a strong leader and president in the labor union movement. He fought hard for the rights of his fellow workers and wanted the best for his community. He is survived by the four children he raised with his wife; Debra (Parish) Spann of Chicago, Ill., Gregory Parish of Adrian, Scott Parish of Adrian, and Robin Parish of Adrian. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Dawn Spann-Pierre of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Rosalynn (Nikky) Parish of Adrian; Lamar Parish of Adrian; Jennifer Parish of Cleveland, Ohio; Ashley (Parish) Mirelez of South Carolina; Joshua Donald of Adrian; Misha (Donald) Walker of Adrian; DeShawn Parish of Adrian; Ryleigh Parish of Adrian; Tyler Scott Parish of Jackson; Michael Anthony Powell of Austin, Texas; Scott Torres Parish of Onsted; Nyashia Torres of Onsted; Chris Torres of Onsted; Joshua Torres of Adrian. Robert Parish is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren: Denise Cayard- Spann, Daishon Spann-Shabazz, Dominique Spann- Shabazz, Destyni Spann-Shabazz and Qyrah Spann- Pierre, all of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Jurell Parish, Laci Sager and Lexi Sager, all of Adrian; Dorian Bakewell, Simone Bakewell, Ethan Stewart, all of Cleveland, Ohio; Adriana Mirelez of South Carolina, Iverson Rojo of Arizona, Braden Donald; Marcel Parish, Tyra Parish, Nevaeh Parish, Jada Parish, Ashante Tindall, Javen Carr and Lyric Walker, all of Adrian. He is survived by five sisters, Dorothy (Dudley) Marsh of Greenville, N.C., Margaret Ann (Parish) Semmons of Jacksonville, N.C., Clara (Parish) Brown of Okinawa City, Japan, Cora Dell Parish of New York, Betty (Parish) Goings of Memphis, Tenn., and two brothers, James (Cooter) Parish and Bobby (Sonny) Parish of Jacksonville, N.C., along with a host of nieces/great-nieces and nephews/great-nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Harriet Jo-Ann Carter Parish; his mother, Cora Lee Collins Parish; his father, Enoch Parish; sister, Mildred (Parish) Chapman; two sons, Jeffrey Lee Parish and Troy Enoch Parish, and grandson Raji Rochad Parish. Robert Parish loved his family, friends and community very much. He was adored and admired by all of those who met him. There is nothing he would not do for his neighbor. The service celebrating the life of Robert will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Ogden Church with the Rev. Michael Dudley officiating. Vicky S. Pifer, 65 of Coldwater, died unexpectedly at her home on Monday, May 25, 2009. Services will be held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Angel Rojas from the Church of The Holy Spirit officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Vicky was born Oct. 19, 1943 in Coldwater to William and Grace (VanAkin) Burns. She married William L. Pifer on July 31, 1964 in Coldwater. He preceded her in death on Oct. 19, 2008. Mrs. Pifer was a lifelong resident of Coldwater, graduating from Coldwater High School in 1961 and then Wright Beauty Academy. She has worked for the past 28 years for Attorney Eric Goodwin’s Law Office in Coldwater as a legal secretary. Vicky was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit, a former member of the Coldwater Eagles and the local Bunko (Dice) Club. She was an avid bowler, having played on many leagues and a past 4-H, Blue Bird and Brownie Girls Leader. Vicky enjoyed shopping, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her son Tod and Michell Pifer, her daughter Lisa and Eric Rockwell, her mother Grace Burns, her brother Michael and Kendra Burns all of Coldwater, her sisters Sally and Curt Knowles of Athens, Susan and Jack Brown of Hillsdale, her grandchildren Cole Pifer, Lindsey Rockwell, Erika Rockwell, Alexandra Rockwell, Shanel Thompson and Chaz Brand. WESLEY MAX NEWLOVE PECK Wesley Max Newlove, age 81, of Peck, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, after a long illness. He was born on June 4, 1927 in Melvin. He married Ruth Moran on December 22, 1979 in Memphis. Max served his country with the United States Army during WWII. He was a lifelong area farmer and was employed by Mueller Brass, Port Huron, for 22 years, L & L of Romeo for ten years and for Bluebird Enterprises until his retirement. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Ruth of 29 years, are one son; Roy (Shannon) Newlove of California, two daughters; Debbie (Carl) Gordon of Croswell, Kathy (Andy) Lewis of Peck, nine grandchildren; Dustin (Cynthia) Newlove of New Jersey, Jonathan (Jessica) Newlove of California, Heather (Dennis) Terpelle of California, Rodney (Christy) Gordon of Croswell, Tracy (Michael) Slack of Comstock Park, Nicole (Theodore) Whitley of Croswell, Tiffany (Matt) Kern of Reese, Jeremy Kipp of Lincoln Park and Scott (Lesa) Lewis of Peck, twenty great-grandchildren with three more coming, two sisters; Jean Hastings and Marie Beadle, both of Port Huron along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Walter W. “Wally” McDowell, 57, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Oct. 19, 1951, in Hillsdale, to John and Gwendolyn (Knot) McDowell Sr. Wally was a former employee of Ford Motor Company in Saline. He was a 1970 graduate of Pittsford High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era. Surviving are five siblings, Harriet (Les) Rogers of Billings, Mo., David (Theresa) McDowell of Bryan, Ohio, John (Ruth) McDowell Jr. of Osseo, Dale McDowell of Waterford, and Bruce McDowell of Honolulu, Hawaii; aunt, Sherry Duer and uncle, Brook Easton; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. There will be a memorial visitation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the second floor community room at Hillsdale Place. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1966 and Hillsdale College in 1970. After college, Bill was employed by a shoe company as a sales representative for the west coast and lived in Portland, Ore. Bill moved to Kalamazoo in the early 1980’s. For the past 15 years, he was employed at The Big Burrito. He is survived by a brother, David of Lyon, N.Y. and four nieces and two nephews. He was proceeded in death by a twin brother, Robert Shaw in 1992. Services will be held Friday, May 29, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are by Putnam Funeral Home.
