Betty lived at Nandi Hills Group Home in Flint. She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Viola Hawley; 2 brothers. Betty Ruth (Pask) Strand-DeSautel, age 83, of the Irish Hills, passed away surrounded by her family on May 26, 2009. Betty was born, Sept. 18, 1925, to MaDonna and Raymond Pask and spent most of her life in Tecumseh and Manistique, Mich. She married Henry Alfred Strand II who was the father of all of her children and preceded her in a sudden death on Jan. 17, 1964. She later married Henry (Hank) DeSautel in 1978 who preceeded her in death on Dec. 19, 2006. Betty enjoyed family gatherings, especially Mother’s Day. She was an avid board game and card player. Betty worked at the Visitor Center in Manistique for many years and liked to camp and travel in her motor home. Betty is survived by 11 children, three step-children; two brothers; numerous nieces and nephews;  64 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh with Father Daniel Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 28, 2009, at the J. Gilbert Purse Funeral Home, Tecumseh, and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Charles Don Wilson, 76, of Morenci passed away Friday, May 22, 2009, at Fulton Manor in Wauseon, Ohio, following a period of failing health. He was  born July 27, 1932, in Fairfield Township, Mich., the son of H. F. and Ruby (Yates) Wilson. He married Lola Sue Collar on Dec. 20, 1953, in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Don was a life-long Morenci area resident and retired from General Broach in Morenci in 1994. He graduated from Morenci High School Class of 1950, served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. Don loved music and played guitar for a number of years. He also enjoyed woodworking and cooking. Surviving Don besides his wife, Lola of Morenci, are three children, Jo Rea (Jerry)  Keene and Connie Mirelez, all of Morenci, and Donald Alan (Cassie) Wilson of Kentwood, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Jeremy (Missy) Keene  and Deborah Mirelez of Morenci, Joshua (Heidi) Keene and Nathan Mirelez of Adrian, Gideon and Greyden Wilson of Kentwood and Jessica Mirelez of Grand Rapids; and seven great-grandchildren, Marissa, Jared and MacKenzie Keene and Ethan McCowan all of Morenci and Chynna and Malik Mirelez and Heliel Williams all of Grand Rapids; two brothers, Jay (Nora) Wilson of Fairfield and Robert (Jan) Wilson of Morenci; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, I.C. and Jr. Wilson and a daughter Linda Sue in infancy.  Funeral services for Don will be Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at 1 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Pastor Dennis Owens officiating. Charles F. ‘Chuck’ Norris of North Adams passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009 at the “Mac” McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born June 24, 1938 in North Adams the son of Robert and Gladys (Leonard) Norris. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Bonnie (Bonsteel) Norris whom he married on Oct. 9, 1965. He is also survived by one son, Scott (Vicki) Norris of Saginaw; two grandchildren, Dalton and Dylan Norris; one brother, Larry (Cindy) Norris of Danville, Va.; two sisters, Sally (Tom) Andrews of Reading, and Amy (Daniel) Moore of Oviedo, Fla; one sister-in-law, Marilee Norris of Tecumseh; mother-in-law, Dorothy Bonsteel of North Adams; step-mother, Norma Norris of Hillsdale; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Norris. Chuck served his country in the United States Marine Reserve. He worked for the State of Michigan Department of Corrections in Jackson for 30 years and retired in June of 1997. He also enjoyed farming and gardening and spending time outdoors. At his request cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Charles F. “Chuck” Norris will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Charles “George” Thorne, 80, of Coldwater, passed away May 25, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was born July 16, 1928 in Belleville. He married Mary Lou Gleason on July 27, 1968 in Angola, Ind. He lived in the Coldwater area for 27 years moving here from Angola. He served in the U. S. Army during the Korean conflict receiving the United Nation’s Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and the Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Medals. George belonged to the American Legion in Bristol, Ind. and loved going to auctions. He is survived by six children: Charles (Becky) Thorne of Coldwater, Carl (Crystal) Thorne of Coldwater, Tammy Gundrum of Florida, Chyann Wagoner of Hillsdale, Clifford Thorne (Krista Brainard) of Coldwater, Chad Thorne of Coldwater, and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Lou in 2000. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 1, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Lockwood Community Church with Mr. David Brown officiating. Full military honors will be held Monday, June 1, 2009 promptly at 2:30 p.m. at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Memorial contributions may be made to the family. Chester F. Emerson, 74, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2009, in the loving presence of the Lord in Sylvania, Ohio. Chester was born on Jan. 27, 1935, to James Russell Emerson and Donnie Isbell Uptain in Alabama. He met the love of his life, Ruby Sanderson, and the two were joined together on July 2, 1954, in Adrian, Mich. Together they shared over 54 years of marriage and happy memories.  Chester and Ruby made their home in Blissfield where they raised three children.  Chester made his living at Ace Drill in Adrian for over 30 years, and then went into business for himself working on tool and cutter grinding. He enjoyed many family activities and trips back home to Alabama. Chester enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and most recently his great grandchildren. Chester, along with his wife, were faithful members of the Blissfield Baptist Church. Surviving is his wife, Ruby Emerson of Blissfield; two children, Charles (Heidi) Emerson of Britton, and Janine (Doug) Emerson of Monroe; son-in-law Jerry Lippens of Blissfield; four grandchildren, Amanda (Jr) Iffland of Blissfield, Nathan Fuller of Monroe, Bradley (Tiffany Smith) Emerson of Sylvania, and Mackenzie Lippens of Blissfield; and his first two great-grandchildren, Blake Edward Iffland and Samantha Jean Emerson. Also surviving are two brothers, Clovis (Earlene) Emerson and Gene (Donna) Emerson, both of Alabama; two sisters, Earlene McKinney of Alabama, and Willie Mae (George) Hagy of Blissfield; and many special nieces and nephews. Chester joins those who went before him in heaven including his parents, youngest daughter Robin Lippens, eight brothers, and five sisters. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Blissfield Baptist Church in Blissfield, with Rev. Tom Frantz officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield. Visiting hours will be Wednesday for 2 to 8 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Lung Association. Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, to the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years before moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Washington and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter-in-law, Diana Lundgren and a sister, Marie Alexander. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Darrell R. Curtis, age 72, of Constantine, Mich.,  passed away  Sunday, May 24, 2009, at his home. He was born April 20, 1937, in Butler Township, a son of  Lloyd W. and Margaret (Lampman) Curtis. Darrell graduated from Quincy High School in 1956 an served in the U.S. Army.  On Nov. 12, 1966, he married Erma Birkey in Coldwater. Darrell worked in sales at Dynamax Corp. in Elkhart, Ind., for 10 years and previously  for Carriage RV in Millersburg, Ind. He was a former member of the F.F.A and Flying Hooves 4-H Club in Quincy and served as a judge at fairs and shows. Darrell also enjoyed traveling, fishing and golfing. Mostly he loved his family, friends and enjoying life. Surviving are his wife, Erma Curtis, Constantine; a sister , Diannia (Jim) Smith of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers,  Dennis Curtis,  White City, Ore. and Doran Curtis of Quincy; a brother-in-law, Dale Paul of Quincy, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd Curtis and Margaret Jeannette Curtis Wilcox; a brother, Leland Curtis; and a sister, Karen Paul. Relatives and friends will be received 3-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine, where religious services will be held at 6 p.m.  Wednesday. Donna Grace Bystry 85, of Monroe, Wis., and formerly of Bronson, Mich., died May 22   at the Angelus Retirement Community in Monroe.  She had been in failing health.                                       Donna was born on Aug. 27, 1923, a daughter of Robert L. and Myrna (Rogers) Kellett in Orland, Ind. She was raised in Orland and  graduated from Orland High School in 1941.  She married Edward Bystry on Dec. 26, 1943, at St. Mary’s Catholic Rectory in Bronson.  They were lifelong residents of Bronson. Prior to her retirement, she worked for the Bronson Public School System at Anderson School for over 20 years.   She was a member of the Branch County Historical Society and was active in their fund raising efforts.  She enjoyed the Bronson Public Library, sewing, crafts, crossword  puzzles, dominos with close friends, and visiting her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Edward; her children, son Michael (Cheryl) Bystry of Monroe,  daughter Linda Whitehouse of Evanston, Ill., son Joseph Bystry of Flowermound, Texas, daughter Kay (Mike) Walsh of Crystal Lake, Ill., son Robert (Jenifer) Bystry of Glen Ellyn, Ill., son Larry Bystry of Fishers Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Norma Barkowski; her sisters-in law, Velma Bystry and Martha Kellett; and many nieces and nephews.  She was proceeded in death by her parents; her sister Alice, in infancy, her sister Mary Jane Boes, her brother Robert W. Kellett, her sister Ann Sellers and brother-in law Donald Sellers, brothers-in-law Albert Bystry and Frank Barkowski, and brother and sister-in-law Vern and Eleanor Galloway.  Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson, with Rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of  Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Assumption Catholic Church, with  Father Richard Fritz officiating.  Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. A service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Coldwater United Methodist Church with Pastor Cindy Skutar officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Jane was born June 17, 1918 in DuBois, Penn. to Leonard and Bertha (Tiley) Bennett. She married Gilbert Patton on June 27, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pa. They continued to live in DuBois, where they had both grown up and until Gil completed his service to his country. In 1948, they came to Coldwater where they had remained. Jane spent many years in the employ of the former Branch’s Department store. In her younger days, she enjoyed swimming, boating, golfing and traveling with her family. In recent years, she enjoyed the flowers in her yard and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Coldwater Country Club and the United Methodist Church. Jane was preceded in death by her husband Gil in September 1998, her brothers, Clifton and Bernard Bennett, sisters Mildred Raub, Marjorie Hodge, Dorothy Fauls, Ula Greenwood and Elizabeth Bennett. She is survived by her daughters, Sidney (Duane) Paradine, and Cheryl (Michael) Easterday all of Marshall, grandchildren Jamie Paradine of Marshall, Corey Paradine of Stowe, Ohio, Leslie (Jason) Burks of W. EDNA ROSANNA VATTER SANDUSKY Edna Rosanna Vatter, age 94, of Sandusky, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Marlette Hospice Residence. She was born May 12, 1914 in Snover, Michigan the daughter of the late Edwin and Rosanna (Richards) Hill. Edna married Donald Nicholas Vatter on March 5, 1932 in Snover, Michigan. He passed away July 17, 1982. She was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church, Sandusky. She was a nurses aide for many years at the Sandusky Hospital. Edna lived with and was lovingly cared for by Tom and Nancy Miller of Brown City for eight and one half years. Eleanor Lucille Kennedy, age 77, of Sturgis, Mich., was called home by her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, from Thurston Woods Village. She was born Dec. 28, 1931, at the home of her grandparents in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Gladwyn and Beatrice (Murray) Kennedy. Eleanor graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1950. After working locally for five years, she enrolled at Emmaus Bible School in Oak Park, Ill., and was employed there for 17 years. She later worked for the Regular Baptist Press in the graphic arts department doing desktop publishing, retiring in 2001 and returning to Sturgis. Eleanor was very involved in her churches, the Woodside Bible Chapel in Maywood, Ill., and the Sturgis Bible Chapel in Sturgis. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, walking at the Doyle Center, and was an avid knitter, knitting hundreds of vests for children in Africa. Surviving are two sisters, Laura (Richard) McCoy of Sturgis and Patricia (Frank) Hercinger of Fennville; four nieces, Brenda (Kenneth) Moore of Kalamazoo, Deborah (Larry) Fraylick of Sturgis, Dawn (Paul) Clements of Plymouth and Becky (Michael) Wendlick of Green Bay, Wis.; a nephew, Frank G. Hercinger of Fennville; five great-nephews; a great-great-niece; an aunt, Lucille Holt of Sturgis; numerous cousins; and many close friends, including Florence Ekkel. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. today at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Eleanor L. Mrs. Tucker retired from Spartan Electronics in Jackson.  She was a previous resident of Florida and the Hillsdale area prior to residing in Jackson. Ernest D. “Dewey” Gamber, of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, May 14, 2009, at the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 21, 1927, in Huntington, Indiana, the son of Clyde and Florence (Lambright) Gamber. He is survived by two brothers, Richard D. Gamber of Fowlerville and Charles E. (Julia) Thorp of Coldwater; two sisters, Mary M. (Jim) Dietz of Hillsdale and Alberta M. Lapham of Punta Gorda, Fla. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Erma Bilby. Dewey retired from Addison Products in 1988 after over 25 years of service and he enjoyed eating lunch every day at the Senior Center in Hillsdale and visiting with his friends. Eugene Leroy Bailey Metamora Eugene Leroy Bailey, 81, a lifetime Metamora area resident, passed away March 9, 2009. He was born May 29, 1927, in Pontiac, to George and Blanche (VanHorn) Bailey. He married Clara Ellen Hill on July 14, 1951 in Dryden. Eugene served his country in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Military Police. He was born January 12, 1914 in Detroit, son of the late Frank L. and Edna (Vincent) Willis. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kay and his second wife, Enid (Davis). Frank was a WW II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of Lexington Lodge #61 F & AM, Lexington O.E.S. Chapter #237, R.A.M. #41, Past Commander Lexington V.F.W. Post #2382, Past President of the Lexington Lions Club, and the Lexington Senior Center. He was an avid golfer. He was the retired owner and operator of Lakeshore Plumbing & Heating. Gary Allen Prater of Phoenix passed away at the age of 54 on Sunday, May 24, 2009, as a result of complications from cancer. He will be remembered for his kind heart and ability to make anyone he met feel comfortable. Gary was born Nov. 19, 1954, to the late Fritz Prater and Janet (Raloff) Prater in Adrian, Mich. He served in Germany with the Army in the late 1970s performing peacetime border surveillance along the East-West German border and was honorably discharged in February 1981. Following his return from the Army, he attended and graduated from Michigan State University. Gary found the perfect fit to his amicable nature and dedication to excellence in a career in fine dining food and beverage management. Gary will be truly missed by his life partner of 15 years, Tom Peters; his sisters, Kathy (Roger) White, Connie (David) Breckel, Sherry (Jack) Culver; and brothers, Tim Prater and Mark (Pam) Prater. In addition to his uncle Jim (Waneta) Raloff, nieces, nephews and cousins, Gary will be missed by Tom’s family, which includes his parents, brothers and sisters, and their families. Harriet J. Terrill,  86, of Hudson, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.  Harriet was born on August 23, 1922, in Jackson, Mich., the daughter of John and Ella (Rinehart) Shoemaker.  She married Frank J. Terrill on April 4, 1959, in Vandercook Lake.  He survives.  Harriet was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family.  She enjoyed sewing, crafting and taking care of her family. James A. Kohl 1933-2009 James A. "Jim" Kohl, 75, Pigeon, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 21, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 20, 1933 on a farm in Bad Axe and graduated in 1951 from Bay Port High School. He served with the U.S. Army as a medic during the Korean War. He was united in marriage on December 23, 1950 to Lorraine B. Henne in Bad Axe. She preceded him in death on June 16, 1998. On February 24, 2001 he married Susan J. Kaplan, who survives him. Jim's first job was making boxes, for five cents each, at the Bay Port Fish Company docks. He retired in 1996 as D.P.W. Supervisor, having worked for the Village of Pigeon for 17 years. He was previously employed at a variety of jobs: construction, service station, Bay Port Elevator, farming and selling agricultural seed. He had also been the Bay Port Constable. He loved his community, serving as Pigeon Village President from 1996-2001, as well as village councilman, where he was currently serving. He enjoyed Laker sports, concerts, and plays. He was an avid supporter of U of M sports, particularly football. He was also a fan of the Detroit Tigers, the Red Wings and Frank Sinatra. In his younger years, he enjoyed duck hunting and playing softball. He loved his family and friends. He was a library volunteer who looked forward to taking books to his friends at Country Bay Village. He was an active member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church, where he served as Administrative Council president and sang in the church choir as well as the community chorus. He is survived by his wife, Susan, Pigeon; three daughters, Kristina (David) Dietzel, Houghton Lake, Pamela King, Bad Axe and Cheri (Paul) Garno, Birch Run; two sons, Darin (Lori) Kohl, Reed City and Brian (Tiffanee) Kohl, Bay City; ten grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and his in-laws, Robert and Marietta Tornow, Sun City West, Ariz. He was preceded in death by two infant sons; two brothers, Orlo and Byron and three sisters, Bessi, Beryl and Shirley. Funeral Services were held Sunday, May 24 at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. Rev. Douglas Mater officiated with burial in New Bay Port Cemetery. Leroy Wayne “Bud” Tout, age 78 of Three Rivers, Mich., died Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, where he had been a patient for six days. He was born in Centerville, Ind., on Jan. 26, 1931, the son of Olin and Lola (Baker) Tout. Following graduation from Centerville High School he served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 through 1954. Bud took business and accounting courses at Western Michigan University over the next four years. He was employed at Continental Can Company in Three Rivers for 25 years, and upon the plant closing worked for Crest in Shelbyville, Ill., for 5 years, then returned to the Fonda Group plant in Three Rivers. Following his first retirement, he worked for Lynch Oil Company, the Three Rivers Post Office and the White Pigeon Post Office over the next 14 years. Bud was a member of the Three Rivers Elks. He enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Sauganash Country Club. He bowled in leagues while living in Illinois. He enjoyed all sports, camping, fishing, and banjo music. He especially enjoyed travels with his wife, and had visited every state except Hawaii. Leroy was married to Dorothy “Dottie” Farley on Dec, 31, 1959, in Three Rivers. She survives, along with three children, Bobby Price, Lori Holder (Tim) and Michael Tout, all of Three Rivers; a granddaughter, Jacqueline Strait of Sturgis; a sister-in-law, Joan Halsey of Bellevue; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Barbara Slater; and a brother, Thomas Halsey. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the Eickhoff, Farrand, Halverson Chapel of Three Rivers. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Friday at the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 523 Maple St., Three Rivers, with Pastor Kyle Foster officiating. Lewis Richard (Dick) Harring passed away at his home in Portage on Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Richard was born in Los Angeles on Oct. 1, 1936, to Carl and Mary (Mercer) Harring, and returned to Hillsdale with his family at the age of 4. He graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1954. He received his Ed.D from Indiana University in 1968 and later that year joined the faculty of Western Michigan University where he served as a professor in department of education until his retirement in 1997. He loved teaching and felt it was the ideal profession. His family, friends and students knew him as a patient listener, superb and demanding teacher and wise counselor. On Nov. 22, 1974, he married Ruth Ann Myrom. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, as well as his sons, Scott (Aime) Harring of Ballwin, Mo. and Jeffrey (Joan) Harring of Ellicott City, Md; five grandchildren, Adam, Emma, Drina, Sophie and Evan; sister, Jan (James) Tesch of Hillsdale; and niece, Jennifer (Jeff) Potter of Temperance. He was preceded in death by his parents. During the past 35 years, Richard was deeply involved in Indian culture and Hindu religious practices and made 20 or more visits to India. He and Ruth worked tirelessly to establish avenues for study and advancement of Indian philosophy, helping to create a Vedantic Center in the Kalamazoo area. A memorial service was held May 21 at the Sambodh Center for Human Excellence in Kalamazoo and was immediately followed by a Hindu Last Rites ceremony and cremation at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek. Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. She enjoyed cats, crafts, gardening, needle work, and visiting with family and friends., Lou Wanda is survived by two daughters, Jane Ann (David) Sadro of Ubly, and Theresa (Dan) Hill of Bad Axe; two sons, Eugene Guza of Bad Axe, and Leon Guza Jr. and Karan of Bad Axe; and nine grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Sadro, Sarah and Kelsey Hill, Sloan, Kelsie and Darian Gross, and Rayne and Sommer Guza. She married Robert A. Wyse on April 21, 1951 in Midland. Mrs. Wyse worked at Vesley's and Trayco for 12 years each. She enjoyed sewing, reading and quilting. In Lucinda's retirement, she was a caregiver for many senior citizens. She was proud to have received her U.S. Citizenship in the last 5 years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. MARVIN MERL WINTER CASS CITY Marvin 'Marv' Merl Winter, age 71, of Cass City, Michigan died Wednesday, May 20, 2009 in his home. He was born June 9, 1937 to Merle and Lucille (Rockefeller) Winter in Cass City, Michigan. He graduated from Cass City High School in 1955. Marvin married Janice O'Dell June 20, 1959 in Sutton Methodist Church, Caro. They have celebrated 49 years of marriage. In 1969 Marv went into business for himself establishing Winter's Truck Sales. Winter's Truck Sales sold new and used truck and farm equipment. Marv was still operating the business until his death. In 1975 he established Colony House Catering Hall & Blue Room Bar. The Colony House hosted numerous wedding receptions, concerts, corporate events and various trade shows. It was in operation until 1998. Marv was a member of Cass City Masonic Tyler Lodge #317, Caro Moose Lodge #1049, and Elf Khurafeh Shrine Center, Saginaw. Marv was a NASCAR fan. He loved watching and attending race events. He alsoloved watching the Detroit sports teams: Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons. He was an avid card player. Marv had a great love for animals, in particular, his pet goose, Charlie and his pet lion, Sue Ellen that he raised for 14 years. But his real gift was meeting new people and quickly and easily making friends. He truly loved being surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his wife; Janice, one daughter; Kelli (Charles) Hendrick of Decker, two sons; Kirk (Lisa) Winter of Cass City, Kent (Jennifer) Winter of Midlothian, Virginia, two exchange student sons; Paulo Leme and Gabriel Paggiaro, both from Sao Paulo, Brazil, grandchildren; Lindsey (Joel) Brinkman, Ashley Hendrick, Carley Hendrick, Brennen Winter, Chase Winter and Conner Winter, one sister; Marion Longuski of Cass City, two brothers-in-law; Chuck (Joanne) O'Dell of Caseville, Carson (Jane) O'Dell of Caro, nine nieces and nephews, one very special friend of the family, JoAnn Alexander of Cass City. He was precededin death by his parents; Merle and Lucille Winter, one brother-in-law; Eugene Longuski, father-in-law and mother-in-law; Clayton and Rayola O'Dell. Mary Lou Millett, 86, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away May 12, 2009, at Drew’s Place of Coldwater in Coldwater, Mich. She was born July 31, 1922, in Killbuck, Ohio, a daughter to the late Ray and Helen (Pratt) Roach. Mrs. Millett had resided in Sturgis since 1945, coming from Clair and Grand Rapids. On March 13, 1942, she married Dr. J. Earl Millett in Grand Rapids. He died Aug. 9, 1980. Mrs. Millett was a dedicated and loving wife and mother. To say she enjoyed traveling would be an understatement. She traveled all over the world to every continent with the exception of Antarctica. She and her husband’s favorite destination was always Bequia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis and the Sturgis Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Millett was a talented self-taught artist and especially loved oil and acrylic painting, jewelry making and stained glass. She had taken many art classes at Glen Oaks Community College. Mrs. Millett is survived by five daughters, Pamela Ann (Terry) Johnson of Burr Oak, Mary Candice (Jerry) Suszko of White Pigeon, Cyndi (Tom) Flaherty of Cape Cod, Mass., Dr. Kerri Lou (Dr. John Polzin) Millett of Sturgis and Kelli Sue (Shawn Hinds) Millett of Franklin, Tenn.; one son, Dr. Jeffrey Millett of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren, Jon (Marta) Millett of Chile, South America, David (Pam) Millett of Chicago, Michelle (Matt) Olsen of Vicksburg, Dr. Chris Johnson of Bancroft, Mike Johnson of Sturgis, Dr. Amy (Pete) Suszko-Brown of Frankfort, Ill., Dr. Tim Suszko of Fenton, Taylor Polzin, David Polzin and Matthew Polzin all of Sturgis, Joseph Bourcier, Michael Bourcier and Katy Hinds all of Franklin, Tenn.; identical twin great-granddaughters, Nicole Gabrille and Lauren Elizabeth Millett; one brother, Charles Roach of Roseville, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Martha Bird; and infant brother, Robert Roach. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Melvin P. Stauffer, age 74, of Mendon, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 23, 2009, at the Three Rivers Health emergency room. Melvin was born Jan. 14, 1935, in Lancaster, Pa., a son of the late Peter and Amanda (Stoltzfus) Stauffer. On Sept. 26, 1959, Melvin married Clara Yoder in Leonidas. He had worked in the RV manufacturing business, retiring from Van Guard Industries of Colon in 1997. Mel enjoyed being with family and friends, and especially delighted in his grandchildren.  He loved walking in the woods and seeing the beauty of God’s creation. Melvin was a member of the New Covenant Christian Fellowship in Burr Oak. Michaelene Ann Fenste­macher, age 53, of Tecumseh passed away May 23, 2009, at home. She was born Nov. 21, 1955, in Adrian, Mich., the daughter of M.J. “Mike” and Helen (Tuttle) Michael. On Dec. 11, 1976, she married Thomas W. Fenstemacher.  They had two children, Michael Thomas Fenstemacher and Kimberly Lynn Fenstemacher.  Michael­ene spent most of her career working for Adrian Typewriter Sales & Service  — later named Office Plus.  Michaelene served her community as a member of the Adrian Public Schools Board of Education, co-chaired two United Way Campaigns and was a past President of Zonta of Lenawee.  She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, Devils Lake and traveling.  She is survived by her children, Michael of Kalamazoo and Kimberly of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Tamara K. McNeff of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepmother, Frances E. Michael of Sun City, Ariz.; and two stepbrothers. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009, at J. Rosemary Miller, age 59, of Colon, Mich., passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Rosemary was born Nov. 15, 1949, in Alma, a daughter of the late LaVon Burton and Calvin Sutton. On Sept. 21, 1996, she married Ora Miller in Colon. Rosemary had lived all her adult life in Colon. She was a homemaker and had worked at several area nursing homes. She was a member of the Colon American Legion Auxiliary and Colon Lioness Club. She is survived by her husband, Ora Miller of Colon; two daughters, Kimberly J. (Phillip) Day of Burr Oak and Vicki (Shawn) Machan of Fennville; five grandchildren, Tori, Ryan, Parker, Arionna and Brogan; seven brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy A. McCartney, and a brother, Timothy Sutton. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Rosemary Miller will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon, with David J. Sandra J. Nelson Lapeer Sandra J. Nelson, 71, a resident of Lapeer for 50 years, passed away Friday (May 22, 2009). She was born September 15, 1937, in Flint, to Arthur and Beatrice (Martin) King. She married Norman Nelson on November 2, 1957 in Flint. Sandra graduated from Flint Central High School, class of 1956. She was a member of the Elba United Methodist Church. Sandra was also a member of TOPS. She is survived by her husband, Norman Nelson of Lapeer; children, Dale (Nancy) Nelson of Lapeer, Dawn (Tim) Hubbard of Columbiaville, Gary (Debbie) Nelson of Lapeer; 4 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant son, Mark Allen; parents, Arthur and Beatrice King; brother, Gary King. Memorial contributions may be made to Elba United Methodist Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday (May 26, 2009) at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Rev. Jay Montney officiated. Burial was in Green Corners Cemetery, Hadley. She was born June 30, 1988, in Flint, to Ian and Kimberly (Phelps) Ranshaw. Timber graduated from Lapeer West, class of 2006. She attended Mott Community College, where she earned two Associates degrees. She was currently attending Western Michigan University. Timberly treasured her time with family and friends. She graduated in 1978 from Lapeer East High School. Vicki's first sentence was "Me do it by myself!" and that was her lifelong motto. She is survived by her parents; sister, Virginia Coulter of Lapeer; brother, Andrew Coulter of Colorado; her companion, Butch White; many aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Woody and Bette Thornton, Howard and Bernice Coulter. WESLEY MAX NEWLOVE PECK Wesley Max Newlove, age 81, of Peck, passed away on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, after a long illness. He was born on June 4, 1927 in Melvin. He married Ruth Moran on December 22, 1979 in Memphis. Max served his country with the United States Army during WWII. He was a lifelong area farmer and was employed by Mueller Brass, Port Huron, for 22 years, L & L of Romeo for ten years and for Bluebird Enterprises until his retirement. Surviving in addition to his loving wife, Ruth of 29 years, are one son; Roy (Shannon) Newlove of California, two daughters; Debbie (Carl) Gordon of Croswell, Kathy (Andy) Lewis of Peck, nine grandchildren; Dustin (Cynthia) Newlove of New Jersey, Jonathan (Jessica) Newlove of California, Heather (Dennis) Terpelle of California, Rodney (Christy) Gordon of Croswell, Tracy (Michael) Slack of Comstock Park, Nicole (Theodore) Whitley of Croswell, Tiffany (Matt) Kern of Reese, Jeremy Kipp of Lincoln Park and Scott (Lesa) Lewis of Peck, twenty great-grandchildren with three more coming, two sisters; Jean Hastings and Marie Beadle, both of Port Huron along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends. Max was preceded in death by his parents; John Wesley Newlove on September 20, 1967 and Wealtha Ada Newlove (Lord) on May 14, 1933 as well as a sister, Leona Quinlan on July 4, 1998. He was bound to the land from the day of his birth, His roots anchored deep in the fertile earth, Nurtured, sustained by the soil he grew, And his life, like furrows ran straight and true. In faith each spring he planted the seeds, In hope to reap his family's needs, With patience he waited for the harvest to come, To gather the fruits of his labor home. Every turning seasons, the years sped past, Til the final harvest came at last, Then claimed anew by beloved sod, He gathered home to be with God. Max will be in his families hearts forever. Always loved, forever missed. Funeral services with the family honoring the memory of Max were held at Kaatz Funeral Home, Yale with Rev. Walter W. “Wally” McDowell, 57, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Oct. 19, 1951, in Hillsdale, to John and Gwendolyn (Knot) McDowell Sr. Wally was a former employee of Ford Motor Company in Saline. He was a 1970 graduate of Pittsford High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era. Surviving are five siblings, Harriet (Les) Rogers of Billings, Mo., David (Theresa) McDowell of Bryan, Ohio, John (Ruth) McDowell Jr. of Osseo, Dale McDowell of Waterford, and Bruce McDowell of Honolulu, Hawaii; aunt, Sherry Duer and uncle, Brook Easton; many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. There will be a memorial visitation at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the second floor community room at Hillsdale Place. Private family interment will take place at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
