Brian Paul Turner, age 48, died surrounded by his family and his Pastor, Oveta Fuller-Caldwell, at the Toledo Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, after a long struggle with COPD and asthma. Brian was born on Nov. 28, 1960, in Adrian to Jerry W. and Barbara M. (Grimes) Turner. Brian was baptized in the Bethel AME Church. He attended Adrian Public Schools and graduated from Adrian High School in 1979. Brian worked at several Adrian factories. Brian was a railroad enthusiast and traveled the countryside spotting trains. He loved to work on and he rebuilt several muscle cars. He had a great sense of humor and was an adept punster. Brian was always willing to help out people and animals in distress. Brian is survived by his parents; his sister, Teresa Turner-Sharp, and brother-in-law, Scott Sharp; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Brian was preceded in death by his grandparents, Paul and Agatha (Bird) Grimes, and Anne White and Richard and Dorothy Turner; his aunt, Pauline (Grimes) Scott, and his uncle, Ralph Grimes; and great-aunt, Helen (Aunt Sis) White. He was loved and will be greatly missed by those who knew him. Funeral services for Brian will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor Oveta Fuller-Caldwell officiating. Cremation will follow the service. Bruce L. Carpenter, age 60 of Sherwood, passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.  Bruce was born May 5, l949, in Coldwater, a son of the late Louis G. and June M. (French) Carpenter.  Bruce had served in the U.S. Army, as a military policeman. He had made his home in Branch County most all his life and at his present address the past 36 years.  He graduated from Union City High School with the class of 1967 and attended Kellogg Community College for one year. On Jan. 19, 1974, he married Norma Vogel in Union City. Bruce had worked 36 for Post Cereal in Battle Creek, retiring in 2003 due to poor health. He was a member of the Athens V.F.W. Post 5319 and had played in the A.P.A and V.N.E.A. pool leagues. He was an avid sprint car racer and enjoyed puttering around the garage. He is survived by his wife, Norma Carpenter; a daughter, Jennifer (Brian) Hunt; a son, Norman (Amy) Carpenter; four grandchildren, Autumn, Isaac, Zachary and Bradley, all of Sherwood; two sisters, Sue Ann Carpenter of Barrington and Mary Lou Carpenter of Coldwater. The family will receive relatives and friends from 5-8 p.m. today at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon. A graveside funeral service and burial will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Sherwood Cemetery in Sherwood, with Pastor Daryl Dexter of the Sherwood Free Methodist Church officiating.  Military honors will be conferred by the Athens V.F.W. Post #5319. |

Coach F. Patrick Lowe, 82 of Coldwater, died unexpectedly on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009 from 2- 8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater, with the Rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with Rev. Fr. Daniel Doctor officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Patrick was born Dec. 25, 1926 in Vicksburg to Frank P. and Ivy (Zerby) Lowe. He married Caroline P. Connell on Nov. 23, 1971 in Coldwater. Mr. Lowe served in the US Army and came to Coldwater in 1951 after his graduation from Hillsdale College. He belonged to St. Charles Church and was a teacher and baseball coach at Coldwater High School from 1951 to 1981. He was a varsity baseball coach with eight Twin Valley Championships and the 1976 runner-up in the State MHSAA Baseball Tournament. Patrick served eight years as the CHS Athletic Director, instrumental in the development of the summer baseball program AABC and served on the board of directors for 25 years. He had many years of involvement in the AABC North Central Regional Tournament in Coldwater, also serving as director. Mr. Lowe was honored by the American Assoc. of College Baseball Coaches for 25 years of coaching and elected to the MHSAA Baseball Hall of Fame. Since his retirement, Patrick has continued to attend the Detroit Tigers Spring Training in Lakeland, Fla. He and his wife Caroline enjoyed their visits to Florida and traveled extensively to watch the Tigers play. He was also an avid Notre Dame and MSU fan, but always remained devoted to the Coldwater High School teams. Patrick was preceded in death by his brother Robert Lowe and his sisters Harriet Oakleaf and Dorothy Klaasen. He is survived by his wife Caroline, his sons Gregory Michael (Celia) Lowe of Austin, Texas, Jefferson Bradley Lowe of Ann Arbor, his brother Richard (Betty) Lowe of Vicksburg, his sister Helen Stafinski of Kalamazoo, his first wife Julie (Makowski) Young, his special niece Jennifer (Wilber) Carpenter and many other nieces and nephews. Constance Burns, age 58, of Adrian passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Allegiance Hospice Home in Jackson. Connie was born in Hudson on July 28, 1951, the only daughter of Ronald and Betty Lou (Keefer) Wollet. She graduated from Pittsford High School and received an Associate’s Degree from Jackson Community College. Connie worked at Tecumseh Products, Delphi and Dura. She also worked for the Adrian Public Schools in food service.  She was a former member of the Moose and the Wolverine Street Cruisers. Connie is survived by two sons, Russell (Melissa Campbell) Burns of Owosso and Randy Burns of Hudson; a granddaughter, Julie Ann Martin; her father and his wife, Ronald (Mary) Wollet, of Florida; a brother, Rick (Donna) Wollet, also of Florida; and a sister-in-law, Rosalind (Jack) Frost, of California. She was preceded in death by her mother. The funeral service for Connie will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Linda Farley officiating. David Lawrence Tagert, 54 of Battle Creek and formerly Coldwater and Marshall, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday evening Nov. 8, 2009 at his home.  He was born May 3, 1955 in Battle Creek, the son of Frank William Tagert and Dorothy Rose (Bailey) Tagert. David was the Supervisor for the security department at the Battle Creek Health System for sixteen years until he went on medical leave in July 2009. He was a former police officer in Quincy and had worked for a short time at Quality Farm and Fleet and sold cars. He had worked for Kroger’s as a clerk for four years in Coldwater.  David married the former Susie Ann Downard on April 25, 2008 in Traverse City. Surviving David is his wife Susie Ann Tagert of Battle Creek; his son Justin D. Tagert of San Diego, Calif.; two step daughters Rita M. and Mike Potts of Clayton; Erica L. Pearson of Traverse City; one step son Scott D. Pearson of Traverse City; his twin brother and sister in law Daniel and Diane Tagert of Bronson; grandchildren Bailey and Caleb Potts of Clayton; and his sister Kimberly A. and Donald Paul of Muskegon. He was preceded in death by his parents. David graduated from Coldwater High School in 1973 where he was involved in playing sports — football and tennis. He had lived in Coldwater and Marshall before coming to Battle Creek in 2007. He participated in many softball, horseshoes, flag-football and golf leagues. David was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and Tigers and Michigan Sate University sports. Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Wednesday after 9 a.m. where the family will be present from 2- 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Funeral services commemorating the life of David L. Dawn Karen (Daniels) Brooks, age 53, of Tipton died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at her home. She was born Aug. 21, 1956, in Tecumseh to Donal Arthur and Eva Joyce (Ryan) Daniels. On July 24, 1976, in Tipton she married Danny Herbert Brooks and he survives. Dawn was a member of Tipton Community Congregational Church, where she enjoyed giving the children’s sermon every Sunday. She had been employed at Siena Heights University as an Administrative Assistant. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially watching them play sports. Dawn was a true sports fan, following professional, college, and Clinton High School sports. Dawn also enjoyed riding her Harley Davidson Motorcycle with her husband through the southern states. She took part in showing draft horses at major horse shows throughout the Midwest, gaining many new friends in the draft horse community. She was also involved in driving hitch classes which was highlighted by winning the ladies cart class at the Ohio State Fair. In addition to her husband, Danny, she is survived by two daughters, Lindsay (Jeff) Lakatos of Sand Creek and Sheila Brooks (Andrew Clemence) of Tipton; her father, Donal Daniels and Diana Mohr of Tipton; one brother, Steven (Rose) Daniels of Britton; one sister, Darlene (Kenny) Elam of Onsted; and three grandchildren, Kyle, Ryan and Nathan Lakatos. She was preceded in death by her mother, Eva Joyce Daniels. Funeral services for Dawn will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. John Deuble officiating. Burial will be in Tipton Cemetery. Edward A. Eames, 82, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at Drews Place, Village Green in Hillsdale. He was born Feb. 23, 1927 in Detroit to Walter and Edna (Husson) Eames. He was married March 9, 1956 to Sally Gibson and she preceded him in death Sept. 12, 2009. Ed attended Albion College and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. He was retired from Hillsdale Tool. He was a member and former Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale, a former member of Hillsdale Community Schools Board of Education, a former member of the Key Opportunities Board, and former Hillsdale County United Way chairperson. Ed is survived by two daughters, Diane Eames of Hillsdale and Christine (Erik) Olson of Rochester Hills; a son, Douglas (Judy) Eames of Auburn, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and a brother, Walter “Ross” (Stella) Eames of Sun City Center, Fla. Besides his wife Sally, he was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Rex Eames. Funeral services for Ed Eames will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale with the Rev. Patti Beckman officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Hillsdale. Francis W. Frey, age 90, of Adrian passed away Oct. 1, 2009, in Florida. He was born in Ottawa, Ohio, on April 24, 1919, the son of P.W. and Hattie (Deacon) Frey. Francis graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1937 and then went on to attend Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, he served his country in the Army Air Corps. He married Ruth L. Huebner on Oct. 13, 1940. Francis and Ruth celebrated 66 years of marriage prior to her death in 2007. For many years, Frannie, as he was called by his many friends, and Ruth enjoyed winters in Florida. He loved the game of golf. Francis retired from Tecumseh Products where he had worked as a Mechanical Engineer for many years. He was a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Francis is survived by his son, Thomas Frey and his wife, Mary, of Pinehurst, N.C.; three grandchildren, Tim Frey and his wife, Lynsey, of Hickory, N.C., Beth and her husband, Andrew Stephenson, of Madison, Wis., and Ben Frey and his wife, Whitney, of Ravenswood, W.Va.; a great-grandson, Alex Stephenson of Madison, Wis.; and one brother, James Frey of Adrian. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Dean.  A memorial service for Francis will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Joel Sarrault officiating. Burial was held privately at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park. Dec. 19, 1916-Nov. 10, 2009 Frieda L. Beck, the daughter of Reverend Frank and Rosa (Woker) Harmon, was born in Owosso, Michigan on December 19, 1916. She passed away November 10, 2009, at the Ashley Care Center. Frieda is the youngest of seven children. Her family moved to Nebraska when she was in high school. In 1935 she graduated from Belvidere High School. On December 25th, 1938, Frieda was united with Harold Beck in marriage at Belvidere, Nebraska. They moved back to a farm in Gratiot County and began their life together. To this union were born two children, Loren and Margie. In 1969, Frieda graduated from Spring Arbor College with her daughter. |

Harriet D. Baldwin, 89, of Hillsdale, formerly of Hudson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at her residence, under the loving care of her family and Great Lakes Hospice.   She was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Celina, Ohio, to Harry and Daisy (Tracey) Feeman. She was married Dec. 31, 1938, in Angola, Indi., to Richard P. Collins. He preceded her in death. She married Bruce Baldwin on March 1, 1986, and he survives. Harriet, along with her husband, Richard, owned and operated Collins Real Estate in Hudson for 20 years. She was a member of the Hudson United Methodist Church. Harriet enjoyed spending time with her friends and family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loving person who will be missed by all, especially those who called her “Grandma.” Surviving, besides her husband, Bruce, are two children, Connie (Charles) Barnes of Brooklyn, Mich., and Gary (Cynthia) Collins of Kincheloe, Mich.; five grandchildren, Amie (Patrick) Pelham of Tecumseh, Craig (Krissie) Barnes of Onsted, Bart (Jacqui) Collins of Traverse City, Leigh (Jeff) Brooks of Seattle and Charity (Eric) Barnes of Dexter; nine great-grandchildren, Preston, Landon, Ellen, Cooper, Finn, Jennifer, Gordon, Parker and Riley; brother, Henry (Tyyne) Feeman of Spring Arbor; and a sister, Juanita Webster of Lansing. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Richard; a sister, Leota Schroeder; and brothers, Hubert, Harold, Herschel, Howard and Harry Jr. At Harriet’s request, there will be a private family service at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale officiated by Pastor Keith Porter. Interment will follow at the Macon Cemetery in Macon, Mich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Great Lakes Hospice. Helen I. Scheidler, 62 of Coldwater, died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Nov. 21, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Coldwater United Methodist Church. Helen was born Oct. 4, 1947, in Coldwater to Robert and Thelma (Weaver) Scantlen. They both preceded her in death. She married Quentin Scheidler on June 19, 1965 in Kinderhook. Helen was a lifelong resident of Coldwater. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1972 with a degree in elementary education and received her Master’s from Western Michigan University. Her tremendous love of children led her to a career of teaching for the Coldwater Public School System, at Lincoln, Lakeland and Edison Schools for 30 years, retiring in 2003. Mrs. Scheidler was a member of the Coldwater United Methodist Church. She had a passion for doing without and giving to others and was very devoted to “World Vision” (child sponsorship). Helen enjoyed traveling, hiking, bike riding and reading, but she most of all loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Helen in survived by her husband Quentin, her daughters Joli (Roderick Benns) Scheidler-Benns of Whitby, Canada, Lara (Quinton Smith) Scheidler-Smith of Altamonte Springs, Fla., her brother Sam, her sisters Pat, Loretta, Mary Lou, Waneta and Susan, and her grandchildren Alexander Smith, Isaac Smith, Rose Smith, Eric Benns and Alexis Benns. Jack Laverne Sines, 85 of Hillsdale, passed away Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility.  He was born April 13, 1924 in Hillsdale to Samuel E. and Martha (Metcalf) Sines. Jack was a Corporal in the US Marine Corps, serving four years during WWII. He was with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Force in the Pacific Area from 7-19-42 through 11-21-44, and from 7-18-45 through 1-19-46. Jack retired from Hillsdale College where he worked in maintenance, and he belonged to the VFW #7301, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Anthony Catholic Church. Jack enjoyed fishing, watching and feeding birds, watching “Wheel of Fortune” and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife Genevieve Mary (Laurell) Sines, whom he married Aug. 28, 1947; daughters Linda Rowe of Coldwater and Deborah (David) Burke of Hillsdale, sister-in-law Fern Sines of Hillsdale, grandchildren, Matt (Kelly) Bearden, Andy (Amber) Bearden, Paul Bearden, Cassandra Harmon, and Chad (Chloe) Burke and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Frank Madison, two brothers and three sisters. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Hillsdale, with Father Thomas Butler officiating. Visitation is scheduled at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Interment in St. Anthony Cemetery will be at a later date. Memorials to St. Anthony Catholic Church are suggested. |

James Thomas “JT” Harper, 71, of Pittsford, was tragically taken from his family and friends on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. He was born Oct. 27, 1937, in Detroit. James “Jim” Edward Smith, age 68, of Adrian died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 17, 1941, in Adrian to James and Mary (Brown) Smith. On April 25, 1970, he married Joyce (Kish) and she survives.  Jim was a member of Crossroads Community Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepfather, Henry McKean; four sons, Jonathon (Julia) Smith of Onsted, Chris (Kathleen) Smith of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Terry (Patti) Smith of St. Louis, Mo., and Robin (Lynn) Smith of Savannah, Ga.; one daughter, Cynthia (Roland) Wood of Dallas, Texas; one sister, Margaret Johnson of Olatha, Kan.; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David McKean. Cremation has taken place. Jamison G. “Jamie” Pulver, 94, of Jonesville, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at the McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born Feb. 3, 1915 in Scipio Township to James and Elida (Emery) Pulver. He was married March 3, 1940 to Ruth Bean and she preceded him in death in 1976. Jamie attended the Johnson and Guy Schools, his first teacher was his aunt, Florence Emery Saettel. Jamie was a graduate of Jonesville High School in 1933. Following a short course from Michigan State College, he worked two years in St. Clair County, doing cow production and testing. He entered the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific area with the 98th Construction Battalion of the Seebees. In 1950 Jamie entered the postal service, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Jonesville American Legion Post 195 and the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was also a member of Countryside Bible Church in Jonesville. Survivors include a brother, Elmer Pulver of Osseo; a nephew, John Pulver of Grand Rapids; many cousins; special neighbors, Tony Francis, Larry Smith and Judy Price and a good friend, Dr. Pasty Jones of Litchfield. Funeral services for Jamie Pulver will be 11 a.m. Friday at Countryside Bible Church in Jonesville with Pastor John Lillie officiating. Interment with military honors by the Jonesville American Legion will follow at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for visitation from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Eagle Funeral Home in Jonesville. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Janet Josephine Klinck will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 with Pastor Lester Smith officiating. Lyle Richard Merritt, age 95‚ of Constantine, passed away Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers. He was born Dec. 28, 1913,  in Constantine, a son of Frank and Inez (Sawyer) Merritt. He attended school in Constantine. On May 28, 1938, he married Evelyn Maynard in Benton Harbor. Bhe preceded him in death Sept. 2, 2009. Lyle worked as a mechanic at Hover Trucking in Niles retiring in 1975. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on small engines. Later in life Lyle loved to watch Western movies and shows. Surviving are his daughters, Kay Merritt of Baldwin, Jeanne (Donald) Hirsch of Tustin, grandchildren Pamela Kublick of Stevensville, Vickie Golladay of Stevensville, Dara (Tony) Ham of Stevensville, Kim (Jeff) Monroe of Kalamazoo, Tony Wissler of Oklahoma, Scott (Lori) Wissler of Cassopolis and Kristin (Karry) Austreng of Louisiana, many great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren, brothers Ernie Merritt of Constantine and Roy Merritt, of White Pigeon. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sisters Lillian Studabaker and Irene Featherstone; and brothers Frank and Dick Merritt.‚ Relatives and friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Eley Funeral Home in Constantine, where religious services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Marie Faye Hoard, 82, of Allen Township, passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at her home. She was born Jan. 18, 1927 in West Unity, Ohio, the daughter of Walter and Carrie (Manneville) Clifton. Marie graduated from Reading High School and was a lifelong, devoted member of the North Reading Baptist Church. She belonged to their Mission Circle, WC Club, was active with the Rural Bible Mission/Release Time, and served as the church secretary/treasurer for many years. Marie was a very giving person who had lots of possessions only to pass through her hands. At one time, she wrote for the Reading Hustler as reporter of the North Reading News. Survivors include three sons, Thomas Galloway of Hillsdale, Charles (Cindy) Hoard of Jonesville,  Robert Hoard of Hillsdale; one sister, Mary Maggart of Florida; one brother, Marshall (Norma) Clifton of Reading; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, James Galloway and Russell Hoard; daughter, Linda Galloway; daughter-in-law, Christine Galloway; and two brothers, Marcus and Maurice Clifton. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Paul Bartlett officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery. Nora E. Ringler, age 78, of White Pigeon, passed away early Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2009, in White Pigeon Township, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The family would like to express their thanks to God that there were no other injuries in the accident. She was born Sept. 23, 1931, in Coldwater, a daughter of the late Melvin and Marie (Henchman) Belaire. Nora had resided in White Pigeon for the past 17 years, coming from Sturgis. On Oct. 24, 1927, she married Joseph E. Ringler in Angola, Ind. He died Aug. 18, 2009. Following 20 years of employment, she retired from the Kirsch Company in Sturgis. For several years, she and her husband were escort drivers for oversize loads. Nora and her husband had been very active in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and they enjoyed traveling throughout the United States. She enjoyed collecting Avon, crafts and was very talented artistically. Nora taught ceramics in her home and enjoyed painting with Tri-Chem products and sold many of her crafts, ceramics and paintings at area flea markets. She is survived by a daughter, Penny Ann Sprowl of Sturgis; a son, Dale Allen (June) Ringler of Sturgis; six Grandchildren, Heather Sprowl, Becky Marie Ringler, Jackie Nicole Ringler, Joey Ringler, Joseph Ringler III and Trent Ringler; three beloved great-grandchildren; and several brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a stepson, Joseph Ringler Jr.; and a sister, Gladys Bates. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 4-5:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. A memorial service celebrating the lives of Nora Ringler and Joseph Ringler will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Matteson Township Cemetery in Bronson at a later date. Penny and Dale would like to ask those attending the services if they have any pictures of Joe and Nora to please bring them to the service to be displayed on a memory board. The pictures will be returned to their owners following the services. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Ringler’s memory consider the Daily Bread Pantry, c/o Sturgis Church of the Nazarene, 70031 S. Lakeview Ave., Sturgis, MI 49091. Robert E. Downer, 72, beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Quincy, Mich., passed away Oct. 16, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla, at his winter home.  Robert was born Sept. 23, 1937, to Wallace and Gladys (Marquart) Downer in Hillsdale.  Both parents preceded him in death.  He graduated from Quincy High School in 1955 and married Jennie Lee Gerber on May 19, 1956.  He also attended the Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music from 1959-1962.  After graduation, he became director of Camp Selah Christian Camp, Reading, for 15 years with his wife, Jennie.  He was an active member of East Algansee Baptist Church and currently Calvary Baptist Church, Quincy.  During the winter months, he attended Fellowship Baptist in Bradenton.  He worked the majority of his life as co-owner with his father at W.E. Downer and Son Well Drilling and loved his work and all the people he met during those years. Bob and Jennie loved to travel in the U.S. and to many other countries.  They also loved fishing off their boat in Florida during the winter months. Survivors include his wife, Jennie Lee (Gerber) Downer; one son, Mark Downer, Mooresville, N.C.; one daughter, Karen (Downer) Parman, of Fayetteville, Ga.  Also surviving are two sisters, Nancy (Downer) Strang of Quincy  and Carol (Downer) Turner of Edwardsburg; five grandchildren, Kortney Parman of Atlanta, Ga., Brock Parman of Nashville, Tenn., and Mickel, Taylor and Daylee Parman of Fayetteville, Ga. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Quincy Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Frank Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Quincy.  Friends and family will be received for visitation Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy.  Memorials are suggested to the Quincy Calvary Baptist Church or Tidewell Hospice & Palliative Care, 3355 26th St. W, Bradenton, FL  34205-3607. |

The Rev. L. Seal  Janeway, age 86, of Manchester died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, in his home surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was born Nov. 15, 1922, in Washburn, Tenn., the son of Fred and Celeste (Farmer) Janeway. On June 18, 1946, he married the love of his life, C. Louise Brooks, and she survives. Pastor Seal was a United States Army Veteran of WWII and an area resident for many years. The Rev. Seal was Pastor of the South Side Baptist Church in Middlesboro, Ky., and then was pastor for 14 years at the Tecumseh Missionary Baptist Church until he retired in 1979. He is currently a member of the Clinton Baptist Church and the F&AM Lodge in Tennessee. He enjoyed being part of the “McDonald’s Breakfast Club,” fishing, spending time outdoors, on the water and spending time with his grandkids. His greatest love was that of the Lord, his cherished family, church family and many friends. In addition to his wife, Louise, he is survived by his daughter, Linda (Les) Kopka of Manchester; two brothers, Floyd (Susie) Janeway  and John (Myrtle) Janeway, both of Ewing, Va.; four grandchildren, Brett, Gina (David), Sue (Rick) and Lori (Lee); and five great-grandchildren, Justin, Sarah, Andrew, Katie and Lucas. In addition to his parents, Seal was preceded in death by one sister, three brothers and one grandson, Leslie Allen Kopka Jr. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Clinton Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with Pastors Bob Riddle, Richard Rogers and Nancy Doty officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Clinton. Visitation will be held at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes on Monday, Nov. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and again at the church on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 10 a.m. until the time of the services. Contributions may be made to the Clinton Baptist Church or to Arbor Hospice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.handlerfuneralhomes.com. |

William Robert Sowle, 85, of Jonesville, passed away Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, at home. He was born Aug. 3, 1924, in Amboy Township, to Harry and Alla Elsie (Farver) Sowle. He was first married in 1945 to Clara Long and she preceded him in death in 1991. He was married Oct. 17, 1999, to Eva Mae Westfall Lockwood; she preceded him in death July 20, 2009. Robert was retired from Wells Equipment and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Germany. Robert is survived by two step children, Judy Ann (Charles) Alspaugh of Reading and William Earl (Sharon) Lockwood of Nashua, N. H.; a sister, Chloey Foust of Litchfield; five step grandchildren and two step great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Eva Mae, he was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Clara; three sisters, Elsie, Zelma and Mildred and three brothers, Kincle, Arthur Kelly and Harold Irving. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow at the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams.
