Letter- Aid policies make a difference Monday, November 23, 2009 8:11 PM - Dave Zwart and Mary Johnson |
“If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted, then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like the midday.” Isaiah 59:10. “For I was hungry, and you gave me food.” Matthew 25:35a.  These and many other passages in the Bible make clear that providing food for the hungry is an essential responsibility of Christians. Indeed, any society that claims to be humane must seriously attend to the needs of those without adequate access to proper nutrition. Yet, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, 1.02 billion people in the world are undernourished, about 100 million more than in 2008. That approximately one-sixth of the world’s population is undernourished is scandalous. Especially at this time of year, we are often reminded to share with the less fortunate. This is wise advice, but private charity alone will not eliminate hunger from our world. The conditions listed below have a common thread: They can each be mitigated or corrected by changes in public policy. Economic mobility in the U.S. has been declining since the 1950s. Currently, one out of every seven households in the United States struggles with food security. The majority of agricultural subsidies support meat production, while fruits and vegetables receive only a small fraction of farm subsidies. Through structural adjustment programs and free-trade agreements, Europe and North America export subsidized grains to the global South, inflicting grave damage to the agricultural systems of the South and dramatically increasing the South’s dependence on the North for food security. The foreign-aid system of the United States has not been substantially updated since 1961. Only about half of U.S. foreign aid is dedicated to poverty-focused development. Although 70 percent of the world’s poor are farmers, only 5 percent of development aid worldwide is dedicated to agriculture. For decades, nations of the world have failed to fully keep promises of development aid.  Global warming threatens to lower crop yields.  Clearly, our responsibility to alleviate hunger implies a responsibility to engage government officials. Please join with the Holland chapter of Bread for the World in urging our government officials to treat food security as an urgent priority. Experts know how to eliminate hunger; the missing link is political will.   |
