Berniece Marian Sholl, 90, formerly of Butler, Ind., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Chandler House Assisted Living in Kendallville, Ind., following a brief illness. She had resided there since February 2008. She was born on March 16, 1919, in Hicksville, Ohio, the daughter of Fred and Bertha (Dickerhoff) Rohrs. On Sept. 5, 1937, she was united in marriage to John H. Sholl in Hicksville, Ohio. Together they owned and operated a farm near Butler, Ind. He preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 2000. Berniece was a homemaker and avid gardener. She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. She was actively involved in church service for many years, teaching Sunday school classes, decorating the church and entertaining pastors, evangelists, missionaries and church visitors on a regular basis. She had a passion for Missionaries and found creative ways to remember their names and work. Above all, she was known for her strong, unwavering Christian testimony and for being a prayer warrior. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by five children, Elaine (Larry) Moughler of Butler, Ind., Dwight (Phillis) Sholl of Sturgis, Carolyn (Nolan) Ferrier of Broadview Heights, Ohio, Marlene Embry of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Rev. Keith (Dolores) Sholl of  Sylvania, Ohio; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Vera Hubaker of Safety Harbor, Fla.; a brother, the Rev. Donald (Faythe) Rohrs of Fort Wayne; and many nieces, nephew and friends. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; an adult child, Victor Sholl; and brothers, Robert L. Rohrs, Duane H. Rohrs and George A. Rohrs. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Smith & Brown Funeral Home, 706 N. Betty Lou Shimp, 66, of Montgomery, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at her home. Born Dec. 30, 1942 in Clearfield, Penn., she was the daughter of Robert and Julia (Billet) Stiner. Betty graduated from Clearfield High School in 1960 and worked for Jeep Corporation in Toledo, Ohio. She was a devoted homemaker and mother who loved sewing, crocheting, painting ceramics and other handcrafts. Betty will be sadly missed by the family she loved, including her husband, Robert, whom she married July 14, 1979; two daughters, Lynnette Kast of Quincy, Rochelle (Tom) McNeil of Camden; three sons,  Richard (Cheryl) Frelin of Toledo, Ohio, John Shimp of Lansing, Todd (Stacy) Shimp of Montgomery; one sister, Sharon Frelin of Frenchville, Pa.; two brothers, Robert (Tina) Stiner of Grassflat, Pa., Mark (Brenda) Stiner of Frenchville, Pa.; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading, with Pastor Don Gentry officiating. Clara Zakar of Osseo, Mich. passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at the Laurels of Coldwater in Coldwater, Mich. She was born June 24, 1920 in Smithfield, Ohio the daughter of Joseph and Clara (Madarasz) Toth. She is survived by her husband, Frank John Zakar whom she married on September 6, 1946 and she is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Steve, Paul, Joe and Charlie and one sister, Mildred Scott. Clara was the last of her family. Clara loved to work outside with her flowers. She was a wonderful cook and she enjoyed going to church whenever possible. She was loved very much by her family and friends and she will be missed by all who knew her. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Clara Zakar will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale on Tuesday, November 17th beginning at 2  p.m. with Pastor Dennis Lee officiating. Interment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom Township. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home in Hillsdale. David L. Bickford, 60 of Coldwater, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. No services will be held at this time. Arrangements are being cared for by Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. David was born April 3, 1949 in Coldwater to Leslie and Phyllis (May) Bickford. He married Mary J. Cole on July 7, 2000 in Coldwater. Mr. Bickford retired in 2001 as a sergeant from the Aransas County, Texas, Sheriff’s Department after 20 years of service. David was a criminal investigator and was proud to have earned certification as an Advanced Peace Officer. He also served with the volunteer fire department in Rockport, Texas. Mr. Bickford spent many years in Texas before moving back to Coldwater in 2006. He was a very skilled woodworker, he enjoyed making a variety of toys and crafts and refinishing antiques. David was a member of the NRA, he was an avid photographer and an extensive genealogy researcher who also enjoyed fishing and hunting. Mr. Bickford was preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his wife Mary, three step-sons Jason, Scott and Chad, his brothers Larry Bickford of Northglenn, Colo., Rick Bickford of Farmington, N.M. and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Diane June Borgert, age 65, of Colon, Mich., and previously of Burr Oak, Mich., passed away unexpectedly on Nov. 16, 2009 . She was born June 26, 1944, in Fawn River Twp., Mich., a daughter to Clyde and Grace (Schellhous) VanWormer. Diane graduated from Colon High School and had been a resident of St. Joseph County most of her life. She was married to Walter E. Borgert in 1978.  He preceded her in death. She was a licensed beautician, a homemaker, a very caring person,  and she enjoyed animals and spending time with her great-grandchildren.  Surviving are one daughter, Tonya Hernandez of Kalamazoo, Mich.; three grandchildren, Amber Briones and Nicole Shaffer, both of Coldwater, Mich., and Tyler Russey of Three Rivers, Mich.; four great-grandchildren, Xavier Shaffer, Maliah Briones, Luis Shaffer, and Jaylee Stout, all of Coldwater; her mother, Grace VanWormer of Colon; and aunts, cousins, and a niece. She was preceded in death by her father and husband. Douglas Darr Arnold, 79, of Edgerton, Ohio, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at Hillside Country Living, Bryan, Ohio. Doug fought a courageous battle with cancer and died at peace with family members by his side. Douglas D. Arnold was born Nov. 11, 1930, in Hillsdale, the son of Henry Dewey and Katherine Marie (Bates) Arnold. He married Rita R. Shultz Dec. 26, 1980, in Bryan, and she preceded him in death March 16, 2007. Doug was an accomplished artist during his high school days at Hillsdale High School. He was featured in LIFE Magazine on June 20, 1949, with his work hanging in the National Scholastic Art Show two years in a row. Doug worked at The Aro Corporation in Bryan for 41 years, retiring in 1991. Doug was well known for his industrial photography. He was co-director of the Bryan V.F.W. Veterettes Drum & Drill Team, which won several national championships. Doug was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Montpelier, Ohio. He loved to watch his grandsons participate in their sporting events. He enjoyed his life and family. Doug will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. Douglas is survived by three sons, Mike (Teri) Arnold, of Charlotte, Jeff (Brenda) Arnold, of Bryan, and Doug (Peggy) Arnold, of Enid, Okla.; one daughter, Patricia Kidd, of Texas; one stepson, Carl Shultz, of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Rene Shultz, also of Tucson, and Tami Shultz, of Findlay, Ohio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and cherished friend, Barbara Zulch. Doug was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Ross and Donald Arnold. Douglas Warren Sprague, age 80, of Adrian, formerly of Hudson, went home to his Lord and Savior, Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 31, 1929, in Wright Township, Mich., to Carroll and Myrna (Harris) Sprague. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan and Korea from 1952 to 1956. On March 16, 1957, he married Shirley Watson in Tecumseh, and she survives. Doug had been employed by Tecumseh Products Company, Consumers Power and retired from the Adrian Public Schools, where he had been employed for 16 years. Doug farmed and cared for the family farms south of Hudson most of his life. He and his wife, Shirley, owned and operated the Baker Hill Bed and Breakfast in Hudson. He enjoyed flying and had a commercial pilot’s license. Doug was a member of the Raisin Valley Friends Church where he was a trustee; he served as a member of the North Adrian Grange as well as a 4-H leader. His greatest blessing was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved, adored and prayed for every day. In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by a son, John (Tonia) Sprague of Cement City; three daughters, Jackie (Wesley) Wickham of Osseo, Michelle (Rick) Brownell of Sturgis and Heidi (Scott) Cagle of Adrian; siblings, Donald Sprague of Toledo, Shirley Mitchinson of Grand Blanc, Alfred Sprague of Rochester Hills, Shelia (Gordon) Mitchinson of Turnbridge, Vt., Brenda (Eldon) Cattell of Clayton and Sonja (Tom) Quinn of Dansville; 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Duaine M. Murphy, age 78, of Tecumseh died peacefully at his home Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug. 6, 1931, in Tecumseh, the son of Merrill and Hazel (Beevers) Murphy. He was married to Eris Baily on July 4, 1952, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 2006. Duaine served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed at Tecumseh Products for 43 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Tecumseh American Legion Post #34, Tecumseh F&AM Lodge #69, and the Tecumseh Club. His greatest joy was his family, along with camping, hunting, golfing, traveling, woodworking and cooking. He was also an avid sports fan. He loved baking cookies for his kids and grandkids and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved him. Duaine is survived by two sons, Michael (Vicki) Murphy and Joseph Murphy, both of Tecumseh; one daughter, Nena (Bill) Viers of Tecumseh; two sisters, Karen Hyder of Tecumseh and Cora Alcock of Britton; five grandchildren, Linzie, Chandra, Shae Anne, Emily and Merrill; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Sarah and Marielena. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and three brothers. Duane E. Bills, 86, of Litchfield, passed away Saturday, Nov. 14, 2009, at his home. He was born Dec. 9, 1922 in Crystal, the son of Audley and Alice (Small) Bills. Duane served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a retired truck driver. His hobbies included woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing and camping. He and his wife had belonged to the Night Owls Camping Club of Quincy. On Sept. 19, 1947 he married Florence “Kitty” (Sheerer) and she preceded him in death in 2008. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ken and Robert Bills; one sister, Wanda Karney; and his step-mother, Leone Bills. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Eleanor Anna Haney, age 86, of Osceola, Ind., and a former longtime Burr Oak resident, passed away Thursday morning, Nov. 19, 2009, at her home. She was born Nov. 17, 1923, in Burr Oak, a daughter of the late Levi and Hattie (Schallhorn) Hill. Eleanor had been living with her daughter for the past 11 years. Prior to that she had resided her whole life in Burr Oak and graduated from Burr Oak High School. On Feb. 5, 1946, she married Norman Haney in Centreville. He died Jan. 4, 1992. Mrs. Haney was a homemaker and a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak. She enjoyed crocheting, animals, gardening and word-find games. She is survived by three daughters, Anna (James) VanNest of Sturgis, Joyce (Kenneth) Brackett of Burr Oak and Theresa (Neil Redick) Grose of Osceola; a son, Michael (Anna) Haney of Casa Grande, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rosie Miller of Burr Oak; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Norman Lee Haney; a grandson, James Richard VanNest; a sister, Doris Bennett; and three brothers, Eugene Hill, George William Hill and Albert Hill. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Eleanor Haney will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Burr Oak. The Rev. Kurt Kuhlmann will officiate. Frances P. Gaglio, 89 of Coldwater, died peacefully on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2009 at her home. Frances was born July 20, 1920 in Coldwater to Joseph and Pietrina (Mannina) Barone. She married Joseph Gaglio, Jr. on Nov. 21, 1940. He preceded her in death on April 4, 2009. Mrs. Gaglio was a lifelong resident of Coldwater. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker and an active member of St. Charles Church, where she belonged to the IHM Guild and the Altar/Rosary Society. Frances was instrumental in the daily operations of their family business, the former, Gaglio Ford Tractor Sales. She was “The woman behind the man,” when it came to decision making for both the business and her family. Frances enjoyed cooking and baking and had a great love of music, playing the organ and piano. She was a good listener and a trusted confidant to others, always wanting to help those in need. Mrs. Gaglio was dedicated to her family, whom she adored, especially her children and her grandchildren. Frances is survived by her daughters Grace A. Gaglio of Coldwater, Mary and Terry Kleinert of Grand Rapids, her son-in-law Robert and Wanda Post of Ludington, her grandchildren Robert and Heather Post, Richelle and Jeff Morats, Joe and Melissa Kleinert, Tina Kleinert, Kimberly and Marc Jansen, her eight great grandchildren, and her very special caregivers Barbara Poe, Jane Kosmerick and Joan Spaulding. In addition to her husband, Frances was preceded in death by her daughter Patricia Post, her brothers Peter and Joseph Barone and her sisters Martha Amato, Rose and Catherine Barone. Harry Van Sweden Harry Van Sweden, age 77, of Shelby Township. November 18, 2009. He was born November 17, 1932 and was raised in western Michigan. Husband of Mary. Father of Debra (Kenneth) Schmidt and Bryan (Joanne) Van Sweden. Grandfather of Lisa, Laura, and the late Lily. Brother of Catherine (the late Theo) Key, and Thelma (Roger) Vande Kieft. Harry was also close to his wife's parents, siblings, and their families. Harry was a design engineer for Chrysler and General Dynamics and was involved in several patented designs for both companies. He was active in leadership in his church and the denomination. He was well read and had a wide variety of interests including music. He and his family traveled extensively in the continental U.S. and enjoyed their cottage in the Upper Peninsula. James Barry Fielder, age 75, of Onsted, formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Nov. 18, 2009, at his home, with his children by his side. Mr. Fielder owned Fielder Construction and built such things as Adams Park and sidewalks for the city of Tecumseh. He coordinated and produced the 4th of July Fireworks for Tecumseh for many years. He was a member of the Jaycees and the Tecumseh Club.  He was a past president of the Hot Rod Club. James S. Gauvey, 59, of Mosherville, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born March 23, 1950, in Bryan Ohio, to Kenneth and Blanche (Dangler) Gauvey. James graduated from Reading High School in 1969 and Jackson Community College with an associate degree in electronics. He worked at Daisy Products, Hillsdale; was a hard-rock gold miner in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California; and was also employed at Jesco Industries in Litchfield. Survivors include two sisters, Nancy Lockwood of Saline, Sue Patch-Hickman of Kalamazoo; five nephews, Jeff Lockwood of Jackson, Greg Lockwood of Georgia, Terry Troup of Florida, Chris Troup  of Oklahoma, Rodney Patch of Indiana; two nieces, Deborah Troup Urban of Florida, Amy Patch McFarland of Coldwater; and dear friends, David and Arla Watson of Montgomery. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Myra Troup. Cremation has taken place and interment will be in Ney, Ohio. Arrangements by George White Funeral Home, Reading. |

Jeanne Schmidt, 86, of White Pigeon, died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at Park Place Living Center in Kalamazoo. She was born Aug. 8, 1923, in White Pigeon to Lloyd and Lydia (Ingold) Catton. She was a gradaute of White Pigeon High School in 1942, where she was the drum majorette and a cheerleader. On Oct. 23, 1953, she married Richard W. Schmidt at the White Pigeon United Methodist Church. She had been a Kalamazoo resident since May, and a White Pigeon resident her entire life. She was the secretary for G&A Truck Lines in White Pigeon, Continental Can in Three Rivers, Aux Scandelles School in Elkhart, Ind. and the Pathfinder Center in Centreville. She was a member of the White Pigeon United Methodist Church, the bridge club and enjoyed playing cards. Surviving are her husband, Richard W. Schmidt of White Pigeon; four sons, Brad Schmidt of White Pigeon, Peter (Julie) Schmidt of Kalamazoo, Michael (Alice) Schmidt of Kentwood and Patrick Schmidt of Washington DC; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and a cousin. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister, June Marvin. Relatives and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon, where services are at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Wilbur R. Brandli officiating. John H. Olsen John H. Olsen, age 69, a resident of Roseville, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009. He was born October 18, 1940 in Mount Clemens, Mich., to the late Kay and Verona Hummrich Olsen. Mr. Olsen was employed as an assistant project engineer for Michigan Department of Transportation for over 37 years, retiring in 1997. Later he was employed as a groundskeeper at Cracklewood Golf Course. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen; children, Lisa Campbell of Waterford, and Natalie (Thomas Chapaton) Olsen of Sterling Heights; and two grandchildren, Mathieu and Clarice. He was preceded in death by two siblings, Richard and Joan. Visitation and services will be held on Monday, November 23, 2009 from 3-8 p.m., with a service at 7 p.m. in the Harold W. Lisa Lou Sears-Blalock, of Frontier, Michigan passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 at the Karmanos Cancer Center in Detroit. She was born Nov. 4, 1959 in Hillsdale the daughter of Robert and Clara (Gary) Martin. She is survived by one daughter, Kesia (Ryan) Steffien of Brunswick, Ohio; one son, Logan Blalock of Frontier; two grandchildren, Brooke and Cody Steffien; two sisters, Tania (Charles) Allen of Ossineke, Mich., and Darcia (Alan) French of Hillsdale; three nephews, Robbie (Kathy) Allen of Ossineke, Chad French of Hillsdale, and Chris French of North Adams; several great-nieces and great-nephews; a good friend, Darrel Sears; step-mother, Sarah Martin; and step-sisters and step-brothers. She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.  Lisa worked at the Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Department for three years,  the Frontier Post Office as a relief Postmaster for four years and was a Hillsdale City Carrier for one year. She was also a member of the Arabian Horse Association. A graveside memorial service to honor the life of Mrs. Lisa Lou Sears-Blalock will be held at the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Ray Wilson officiating. Friends, who wish, may make memorial contributions to the family for Logan’s Trust Fund or to the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center.   |

Louise D. Horkey, 90 of Bronson, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 at the Sturgis Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, Nov. 23, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Nov. 22, 2009 from 12-8 p.m. at Dutcher-Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with a Rosary service to begin at 5 p.m. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to Mass on Monday at the church. Louise was born to William and Laura (Smoker) Kowalski on Feb. 20, 1919 in Bronson. She lived in South Bend, Ind. until the family moved back to Bronson for her eighth grade year. She married Edward S. Horkey on May 11, 1935 at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson. Mr. Horkey passed away on May 11, 1984, the day of their 49th wedding anniversary.  Louise is survived by her children: Donald (Nancy) Horkey of Shelby Twp., Betty Lou (Arthur) Williams of Sturgis and Patricia (Jerry) Logan of Florence, Mont. She and Edward had a fourth child, Edward, Jr., who died after a premature birth in 1952. Louise is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandson and several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and son, she was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bernard Kowalski. She worked at the L.A. Darling Company during WWII, the Bronson Reel Company for 15 years and Bronson Plastics for 15 years, from which she retired in 1984. She was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson, the Rosary Sodality (including serving as president for 12 years), the Knights of Columbus Lady Knights, 50-Plus Senior group at church and for the 20 years prior to her passing, the Bronson Township Election Board. She was named Queen of the Bronson Polish Festival in 1999. In lieu of flowers, her family requests memorials donations to St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson or Shriner’s Children’s Hospital. Marilyn Jean Baaske, age 84, of Tecumseh died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at Flower Hospital, Sylvania, Ohio. She was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Frederick and Alice (McKinley) Meyer. On May 31, 1947, she was married to Arthur Baaske and he survives. Marilyn was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church where she sang in the choir. She had been a Bell Telephone Operator in Ann Arbor, worked for Double A Products in Manchester, and then was a teacher’s aide at Porter Center for more than 10 years. She was a member of the American Legion and Herrick Medical Center Auxiliaries, the 50+ Exercise Club, and delivered Meals on Wheels. Marilyn was a supporter of the Tecumseh Center for the Arts and was a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. Her family was the love of her life, as was her church, and friends. She enjoyed travelling, flower gardening and cooking. In addition to her husband, Arthur, Marilyn is survived by one son, Bruce (Denise) Baaske of Tecumseh; two daughters, Linda (Chuck) Iott of Deerfield and Susan (John) Gibson of Tecumseh; eight grandchildren, James and Jennifer Baaske, Kevin Iott, Shane, Sarah, Justin, Marisa and Alyssa Gibson. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Kevin; one brother, Marvin Meyer; and two sisters, Helen Knickerbocker and Joanne Eversole. Marilyn will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Mary Jean Knapp, age 80, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. She was born Jan. 10, 1929, in Oreana, Ill., a daughter to the late William and Elizabeth (Hogan) Fitzgerald. Mary has been a resident of Sturgis for the past 11 years, previously living in Elkhart, Ind., Parkville, Three Rivers and on the St. Joseph River in Mendon. Mary had been employed as a respiratory therapist at  Three Rivers Hospital and she enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. Surviving are three children, twins: Michael Kevin (Linda) Watrous of Constantine, and Debra Susan (Robert) Cantu of Coopersville, and Richard William (Willemina) Watrous of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Jason, Tracey, Melissa, Amy, Eric, Craig, Thomas, and Kimberly; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband,  Larry Knapp; one sister, Helen Summers, and three brothers, William, Daniel, and Everett “Fitz” Fitzgerald. Michelle A. Chesser, age 18, of Onsted passed away Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at home. She was born on Jan. 21, 1991, in Tampa, Fla., the daughter of George and Cynthia (O’Boyle) Chesser. Michelle, known by family and friends as Mickey or Pixie, attended Onsted Community Schools, where she was very active in sports and music. She earned her GED in June of this summer. Michelle loved bowling, movies, animals, all types of outdoor sporting activities, and exploring nature by collecting rocks, shells and flowers. Michelle is survived by her parents; two sisters, Brittany Chesser of Manitou Beach and Amanda (David) Fredenburg of Michigan City, Ind.; paternal grandfather, Billy Chesser of Manitou Beach; maternal grandmother, Mary Lou O’Boyle of Farmington Hills; niece, Jasmine Chesser of Manitou Beach; her dog, Charlie; her fiance, Mike Burgess of Brooklyn; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous other extended family members and friends who are truly saddened by her passing at much, much too young an age. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Joan Chesser, and paternal grandfather, Jack O’Boyle. Patricia 'Patti' Knapman Patricia "Patti" Knapman (nee Powell), age 81, passed away November 19, 2009. She was born in Neptune, Tennessee on March 6, 1928. Patti lived in Roseville for 75 years. She graduated in 1949 from the Henry Ford Hospital School of Nursing and was a registered nurse. Patti was active in the Roseville Historical Society as well as the Roseville High School Reunion Committee. Patti and her husband were lighthouse enthusiasts and she enjoyed daffodils as her favorite flower. Patti is survived by her husband of 58 years, Jack; children, Jacki (Howard), Tim (Angela), and daughter-in-law Fran. She was predeceased by her son, Patrick. Mrs. Patricia (Schipper) Hicks, 81, of Southbury, Conn., died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009, at her home. She was the wife of the late Edward A. Hicks. Mrs. Hicks was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Henry and Katherine Schipper. She has resided in Southbury for 25 years and was a member of the United Church of Christ of Southbury. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Cathryn Hicks; and a niece, Phyllis Schmidt. Paul Thomas Nicolai Paul Thomas Nicolai, age 59, died November 2, 2009, in Sun City, Arizona. Born February 24, 1950, in Fraser, Michigan. Paul attended St. John's Lutheran Parochial School and Fraser High School. Following graduation from Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, Paul served his country in the Marine Corps where he attained the rank of first lieutenant. Upon leaving military service, he returned to Marquette and later lived for many years in Portland, Oregon, before moving to Arizona to care for his mother until her death in April 2009. Paul loved hiking and cross country skiing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Oregon's Cascade Mountains, was selfless with his time and caring for others, was full of life and love of family and friends, and brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was affectionately called UP by his family. He was predeceased by his mother Helen (Hirsack) (2009), his father Richard E. Nicolai, Sr (1995), his brother James (Wendy) Nicolai (2001). Paul is survived by his brothers Thomas (Jin Hee) and Richard Jr. (Diann), his sister Joy (Raymond) Saelens, his loving nephews and nieces Peter Nicolai, Richard Nicolai III, Jene' Nicolai, Eva Saelens (Michael Whittaker), Nicole (Preston) Carter, Lauren Saelens and finance Jeff Caldwell. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him and loved him. Sister Patricia Anne Lynch, formerly known as Sister Francis Kathleen Lynch, died on Nov. 19, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 80 years of age and in the 59th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Patricia was born in Detroit, Mich., to Frank and Kathleen (O’Callaghan) Lynch. Sister graduated from St. Francis de Sales High School in Detroit, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Philosophy Degree in English and a Master of Education Degree from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich. Sister spent 46 years ministering in education in Lansing, Detroit, St. Clair, Bad Axe, Ruth, Port Huron, Warren, Mount Clemens and Roseville, Mich.; Defiance, Ohio; Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and Memphis, Tenn. She was Principal at St. Peter and Paul in Ruth for five years and at St. Anne in Warren for five years, both in Michigan, and Assistant Principal at Regina Dominican High School in Wilmette, Ill., for one year. Sister was a Field Representative for three years for the Diocesan Catholic Schools in Lansing, Mich., and also Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Memphis, Tenn., for one year. She was a teacher at the Roseville Adult Education Center in Roseville, Mich., for seven years. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2007. Sister Patricia is survived by two brothers, Thomas Lynch of Rockville, Md., and Terrance Lynch of Canton, Mich.; a sister, Kathleen Sweeney of Harrison Township, Mich.; and a cousin, Sister Joan Donovan, an Adrian Dominican Sister. She was preceded in death by a cousin, Sister Marguerite O’Callaghan, also an Adrian Dominican Sister. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, 2009, in the Rose Room at the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. He was born Sept. 28, 1940, in Indianapolis. He had been a White Pigeon resident since 1990, coming from Syracuse, Ind. He was a 1959 graduate of Syracuse High School, a graduate of Goshen College, and a chartered life underwriter. On April 23, 1960, he married Twilla Anne Morehouse in Milford, Ind. He was a well-known businessman and owner of White Pigeon Mini-Storage. Steve was an entrepreneur who enjoyed creating a business. He was a member of Christ Chapel in South Bend, Ind. Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Candace (Jon) Martin of Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sons, Chris (Rebecca) Bornman of Syracuse and Shawn (Melissa) Bornman of Milford; nine grandchildren; a brother, Patrick Bornman of Fort Wayne; a sister-in-law, Irene Bornman of Goshen, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. Sylvia “Elaine” Shankle, age 52, of Adrian passed away at her home, surrounded by family who loved her deeply, Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009.  Elaine was born May 24, 1957, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of Willard G. and Isabelle (Garland) Wilson. She married Dana Shankle on July 4, 1981, in Flint. Elaine worked for Adrian Public Schools for 16 years. At Lincoln Elementary she was a playground supervisor, assisted in the lunchroom and was lovingly known as the Library Lady for many years.  Most recently, she worked at the high school as an administrative assistant. She was a former member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Adrian. Elaine’s greatest joy was her family.  She was a devoted wife and loving mother.  Elaine is survived by her husband of more than 28 years, Dana; two sons, Matthew and Robert; her mother, Pansy Wilson of Flint; sister, Elizabeth (Marcus) Frixen of Davison; and nieces and nephews.  Also, Elaine left a beautiful legacy of faith and love to her extended family and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Willard G. Wilson; and brother, Willard Eugene Wilson.
