Arlyne Kay Becker, age 69 of Britton died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at home. She was born May 16, 1940, in Tecumseh, the daughter of Frank C. and Carrenna (Smith) Becker Arlyne was employed as Township Clerk in Ridgeway Township for more than 40 years. She was a teller at United Bank and Trust until 2001. She loved to cook, sew, and being with family. Arlyne is survived by one daughter, Kym (Jeffrey) Geigler of Britton, and two grandchildren, Kyle and Kory Geigler. She was preceded in death by her parents. At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Avis Joan Matthews 78, of Camden, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at Country Living, Hillsdale.  She was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Hillsdale County, to Orian and Orpha (Ford) Gary Sr., and graduated from Camden High School in 1949.  Joan was a longtime employee at the Camden Post Office, first as clerk and then as postmistress until her retirement in 1991. She was an active and former member of the Mt. Union Christian Union Church where she also taught Sunday school. She was a volunteer at the Camden Library and Senior Center and served as the Camden Village clerk for many years. She is survived by: two daughters, Janice (Tom) Seely,Osseo and Janet (Ron) Reynolds, Camden; one son, Marvin (Julie) Matthews, Bryan, Ohio; two sisters, Joyce Carey,Metz, Ind. and Donna (Ken) Nugent, Muscatine, Iowa; one brother, Orian Lavern (Joyce) Gary, Jr.  Angola, Ind.; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Funeral services will be 11a.m. Tuesday at the New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden with Pastor Ned Wyse officiating. Interment will follow in Camden Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled Monday from 6-8 p.m. at the George White Funeral Home, Reading. Memorials are suggested to the charity of donor’s choice.  |

B. Dianne Bradstreet, 63 of St. Joseph, formerly of Addison, passed away on Monday Nov. 16, 2009 at her home. She was born on March 24, 1946 in Addison, to George F. Bradstreet and R. Carolyn (Kuney) Townsend. Dianne was raised in Addison, before moving to Wyoming and then Pennsylvania.  She then moved to Brownstown, Mich., for 10 years, and then spent the past 12 years in St. Joseph.  She graduated from Addison High School in 1964 and then attended Michigan State University for 3 years.  She was employed at B. Dalton Book Sellers, where she worked her way up to a store manager in her 35 years.  She was an avid book reader, enjoyed arts and crafts, country music and traveling. Surviving are one sister, Carol J. (William) Inhulsen of Brownstown; two half-brothers, Richard (Kathy) Bradstreet of Addison, Robert (Mindy) Bradstreet of Addison; one niece, Barb (Ken) Michelini, of West Bloomfield; one great-niece, Allison; one great-nephew, Logan; her step-mother Phyllis Bradstreet of Addison; several half-nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces.  She was preceded in death by her parents, half-brother, half-sister and step-father. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Richard Bradstreet officiating.  Burial will take place in Church’s Corners Cemetery, Wheatland Township, Hillsdale County.  Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday. Bruce H. Patton, 61, of Coldwater, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 in Coldwater.   He was born Aug. 19, 1948 in Marshall to Melvin and Dorothy (Kidney) Patton. Bruce was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Korean War and Desert Storm and finished his military career with the National Guard. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping and mushroom hunting up north. He is survived by daughters Teresa (David) Lewis of Coldwater and Jennifer (Matt) Smith of Coldwater, son Troy Patton of Coldwater, mother Dorothy Patton of Coldwater, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and a sister. Memorial services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with Rev. Catherine A. “Katie” Vaculik, age 100, of Metamora, Ohio, entered into eternal life, Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, surrounded by her loving family. She was born Sept. 2, 1909, to John and Anna (Slovak) Hornacek. Katie loved the hillside and mountains where she was born in Velka, Czechslovakia. She came to America in 1923 at age 13. Later on, she began working for a local attorney and his family cooking, cleaning, and babysitting. In April of 1928, she married Czech immigrant Joseph Vaculik and moved to Ohio, Michigan, and finally, rural Metamora, where she was a homemaker, helping her husband work on the farm and raising her family. Katie enjoyed cooking and baking for family, as well as friends. At Eastertime, she baked and sold “Bunny” cakes and baked Czech goodies for priests and nuns at St. Mary’s Parish in Assumption, Ohio. After her husband died in 1973, she eventually moved to Metamora, Ohio, and kept busy making Czech outfits for dolls and making beaded baskets with friends. She enjoyed the friendship of the Czech Polka Club with their dances and cooking. Katie loved watching the sunsets, looking at flowers, polka dances, traveling, taking casino trips, and talking and laughing with her loving family and friends. The many trips to North Carolina and Texas were among her favorite. She will be remembered for many things including her infectious smile, her helping hands, and the care and compassion demonstrated in so many ways, including being a caregiver for the sick. Katie was a lifemember of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Ladies Auxiliary, and the Czech Dancers Polka Club. She is survived by her children, Frank (Barb) Vaculik, of Metamora, Ohio; Ed Vaculik of Toledo, Ohio; John Vaculik of Swanton, Ohio; Vivian Meleski of Chappell Hill, Texas; Helen (Larry) Hesterman of Ridgeville Corners, Ohio; Lydia (Ken) Robertson of Jasper, Mich.; and Judy (Dave) Frey of Miamisburg, Ohio; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Ann Hmiel of Cranberry Township, Pa.; special friends, Irene Warniment, Nancy Weigel, Brad Iffland, Eva Rosebrock; and caregivers, Sally Simon, Gail Gormley, Betty Kovar and Tammy Peters. Besides her husband Joe, Katie was preceded in death by her son, Joe; daughter, Bessie; daughters-in-law, Kathy and Donna; son-in-law, Florian; grandsons, Phil and Greg; and four great-great- grandchildren. Charles “Charlie” Grabe, age 73, of Sturgis, passed away early Wednesday morning Dec. 2, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born March 23, 1936, in Sturgis, a son to the late Edward and Lila (Roth) Grabe. Charlie was a lifelong Sturgis resident and lived his entire life on the family farm. On Oct. 26, 1974, he married Susan Wooten at the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene. Charlie entire working life was involved in farming and he owned and operated with his family Grabe’s Grain Farm Harvester Hollow. He attended the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene and was a strong supporter and contributor to the St. Joseph County 4-H program. Charlie loved his International Harvester tractors. He enjoyed camping, attending tractor and farm shows and collecting miniature International tractors and International memorabilia. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 35 years, Susan; three daughters, Linda (Kevin) Kelley of Sturgis, Kris (Steve) Zimmerman of Sturgis and Brenda (Jimmie) Schmucker of Middlebury, Ind.; three sons, Mike Grabe, Dale Grabe and Jack Grabe, all of Sturgis; 13 grandchildren, Craig, Nathan, Zach, Ashley, Briann, Nick, Alexis, Cole, Anna, Case, Collin, Brock and Toni; two brothers, Dave (Jeanne) Grabe of Battle Creek and Bob (Wanda) Grabe of Alamo, Tenn.; in-laws, Clarence and Eva Wooten and Betty Johnsonbaugh of Sturgis; and brother-in-law, Wally (Suzanne) Wooten of Sturgis and many nieces and nephews. Christine L. Purlee, 44, of Howe, Ind., was surrounded by her family early Saturday morning, Dec. 5, 2009, at her home when she was called home to be with her Lord and savior following a hard fought battle with cancer. She was born June 25, 1965, in Coldwater, Mich., a daughter to Roger and Genevieve (Brouillard) Smoker. Chris had resided in Howe since 1984 coming from Sturgis, Mich., where she graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1983. On July 21, 1984, she married Gregory A. Purlee at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis. Chris had been employed as an executive secretary at the Kirsch Company in Sturgis until the birth of her son at which time she became a stay at home mom and home schooled her three children. She also did medical transcribing from her home for several years. She was a very active member of the LaGrange First Church of God in Lagrange, Ind., and truly valued and loved her church family. Chris was always looking for ways to give of herself to others and had become active in Forgotten Children Ministries. Through this mission outreach she had taken several trips to Honduras ministering to street children and orphans. She enjoyed going on walks, watching birds, making rugs and quilting. For many years she made sunshine baskets that were anonymously given to people suffering from illness or cancer. Chris was always active and involved but what she cherished most was time with her family. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 25 years, Greg; one son, Aaron Purlee at home; two daughters,, Jenna Purlee and Robin Purlee, both at home; mother, Genevieve Smoker and her special friend, Joy Kent of Winter Haven, Fla.; father and step-mother, Roger (Darlene) Smoker of Bronson, Mich.; one sister, Shelly (Dennis) Case of Bronson, Mich.; one brother, Scott Smoker of Bronson, Mich.; one step-sister, Vicki (Reid) Greene of Bronson, Mich.; one step-brother, Ron (Cheryl) Post of Georgia; father and mother-in-law, Kenneth and JoAnne Purlee of Burr Oak, Mich.; sister-in-law, Ann (Tom) Darrington of Burr Oak and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandparents and one step-sister, Deb Preder. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Christine Purlee will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12, at the LaGrange First Church of God, 777 N. Detroit St., LaGrange, Ind., 46761. The Rev. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. (Wortman) Jagger whom he married June 28, 1979; four children, Anson (Meredith) Jagger of Camden, April (Jim) Collins of Warner Robins, Ga., Dennis (Connie) Tonkel of Osseo and Cindy Wyatt of Camden; two daughters-in-law, Sandie Jagger of Camden and Peggy Jagger of Rossville, Ga.; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Donald Jagger of San Diego, Calif.; three sisters, Phyllis Sharpsteen of Sebewaing, Mich., Ardice Casarda of Hillsdale and Sharon Hukill of San Diego, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Marguerite Jagger of Camden and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, First Sgt. Aaron Jagger and Quinn Jagger; one daughter, Wanda McMichael; one granddaughter, Stephanie Jagger; one brother, Leonard Jagger and one sister, Maxine VanWormer. Mr. Jagger was a life long resident of Camden where he enjoyed working as a farmer all his life. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and he was a member of New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Dale L. Jagger will be held at New Hope United Brethren Church in Camden 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 23 with the Rev. Don Gentry officiating. Interment will take place in Burg Cemetery. Delores E. Deller, 59 of Coldwater, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at her home. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. A gathering of friends and family will be held prior to the service from noon to 2 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Pastor Joel Nephew of the Rayborn Memorial Seventh Day Adventist in Coldwater will officiate. Interment of ashes will be at Metz Cemetery in Angola, Ind. at a later date. Delores was born Sept. 20, 1950 in Allegan to Clifton and Kathryn (Birch) Cram. Delores graduated from Coldwater High School in 1969 and went on to Hillsdale College where she received her nursing degree. She married Donald D. Deller in 1974 in Angola, Ind. He preceded her in death on Jan. 9, 1993. They lived in Angola, where she assisted him on the family farm. They wintered in Arcadia, Fla. for 20 years until her husband’s death in 1993. She had worked at Carlen Park Nursing Home in Angola as well as a nursing home in Arcadia, Fla. Delores later retired from Lakeland Nursing Center in Angola. She was a member of the Rayborn Memorial Seventh Day Adventist Church in Coldwater and the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Port Charlotte, Fla. for nearly 20 years. Delores enjoyed soap making, sewing and knitting. She also enjoyed her Collie dogs and participated in professional dog shows. Delores was a very strong willed, but generous person with a heart of gold who made everyone feel welcome. In addition to her husband, Delores was preceded in death by her father, Clifton Cram and a niece, Lori Reed. She is survived by her mother, Kathryn Cram of Mariettam Ga., son Monte Don Deller of Angola, Ind., daughter Heather (William) Somerlott of Georgia, brothers Dale (Janice) Cram and Lawrence (Alice) Birch, both of Coldwater, sister Bonnie Cram, also of Coldwater, grandchildren Celeste and Constance Price-Somerlott and several nieces and nephews Memorials may be directed to the family. Douglas Warren Sprague, 80, of Adrian, formerly of Hudson went home to his Lord and Savior, Wednesday evening, Nov. 18, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. He was born May 31, 1929, in Wright Township to Carroll and Myrna (Harris) Sprague. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Japan and Korea from 1952 to 1956. On March 16, 1957, he married Shirley Watson in Tecumseh and she survives. Doug had been employed by Tecumseh Products Company, Consumers Power and retired from the Adrian Public School System, where he had been employed for 16 years. Doug farmed and cared for the family farms south of Hudson most of his life. He and his wife, Shirley, owned and operated the Baker Hill Bed and Breakfast in Hudson. He enjoyed flying and had a commercial pilot’s license. Doug was a member of the Raisin Valley Friends Church where he was a trustee. He served as a member of the North Adrian Grange as well as a 4-H leader. His greatest blessing was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved, adored and prayed for every day. In addition to his wife, Shirley, he is survived by a son, John (Tonia) Sprague of Cement City; three daughters, Jackie (Wesley) Wickham of Osseo, Michelle (Rick) Brownell of Sturgis, and Heidi (Scott) Cagle of Adrian; siblings, Donald Sprague of Toledo, Shirley Mitchinson of Grand Blanc, Alfred Sprague of Rochester Hills, Shelia (Gordon) Mitchinson of Turnbridge, Vt., Brenda (Eldon) Cattell of Clayton, and Sonja (Tom) Quinn of Dansville; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian with Pastor Brian Beck officiating. Burial will be in Lime Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. today at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Gail N. Frick, 62, of Butler Township, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born Oct. 21, 1947, in Ferndale to Roy F. and Juanita H (Ledlie) Wellein and graduated from Pittsford High School in 1965. She was a secretary for Frick’s Auto Repair & Towing in Butler. Gail was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed casinos and spending time with her grandchildren.  On Nov. 16, 1968, she married David Frick and he survives. Also surviving are son, Pete (Billie Jo) Frick of Quincy; sister, Brenda Wellein of Albion; mother, Juanita Wellein of Jonesville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and brother Richard. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Geraldine E. Cox, 94, of Bryan Care & Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of Hillsdale, went to be with Jesus Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Amboy Township, north of Pioneer, Ohio, to William and Mildred (Hubbard) Robison. she married Leon Cox Nov. 29, 1935, in Pioneer and he preceded her in death May 11, 1999. Geraldine lived her married life in Waldron before moving to the Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale at the age of 87. She was previously employed by the Avon Co. for several years, and worked at Kustom Fit in Pioneer where she retired from. Geraldine graduated from Waldron High School in 1934. She loved working for the Lord, gardening, camping, fishing, watching birds from her kitchen window, loved cooking and canning, in which she always seemed to have some to share! Geraldine held Good News Club in her home for many years, and led many children to the Lord through her teachings on the Bible. She gave music lessons, taught Sunday school class, both youths and adults. She often would find time to help young mother’s with Bible study in her home. She was a member of the WCTU, Women’s Missionary Society, Munson United Brethren Church, church pianist for years and loved playing her saw whenever asked, manager of the Waldron Kountry Kitchen band and loved going to nursing homes and putting on programs for the residents. She said “just to see them smile” was worth it all! Before moving to the Bryan Rehab Center she was very active in the Hillsdale nursing home and dearly loved playing for the SonShine Singers. Surviving Geraldine are three daughters, Margaret (Jim) Gunder of Waldron, Audrey (Richard) Andrews, Marilynn (Robert) Frank all of Bryan, Ohio; brother, John (Joan) Robison of Ney, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was a blessing to many, and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Lawrence, William, Paul and Arthur Robison; and granddaughter, Paula Brandeberry. Funeral services for Geraldine will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Paul Webster and the Rev. Samuel Wickard officiating. Interment will be in Waldron Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to charity of donor’s choice. Isabelle Smith peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior Dec. 5, 2009 after residing in Miller’s Merry Manor in LaGrange, Ind. She was the firstborn child of Francis and Maude (Burton) Ormsbee, on Dec 14, 1924. Isabelle was a 1943 Bellevue High School graduate. She started her working career at Oliver’s (tractor part manufacturing) in Battle Creek as a riveter. Years later she worked in the cafeteria of East Leroy Elementary School, and her last employment was with Post Gardens Greenhouse in Urbandale, but her first priority and love was her family and being a homemaker. Isabelle is survived by her mother, Maude Ormsbee of Bellevue, who is 101 years old; brothers, Harry Ormsbee of Olivet and Ernest Ormsbee of Bellevue; sisters Hazel Funk of Ceresco, Lillian Pennington of Battle Creek, and Helen Winchell of Olivet. She was preceded in death by her father, Francis Ormsbee; husband, Robert C. Smith; and sister Vivian Bailey. She will be greatly missed by her family: daughter, Carol (Dennis) McClure of Scotts;   grandsons, Troy (Nicole) and Matthew (Tanya); son, Christopher (Shirley) Smith of Colon; granddaughters, Nicole (Mark) Amsler, Danielle (Brent) Blowers, Cassandra (Aaron) Wunder; grandsons,  Andy and Nate Musselman; and daughter, Katherine Marie Clayman of Indianapolis; in addition, to 12 great-grandchildren. With her generous heart she was a leader of a young girl’s group called Bluebirds/Camp Fire Girls. She was also president of the Mother’s Club of the old East Leroy Elementary School. As a member of the East Leroy Community Church she was president of the WSCS/ ladies group, served on various committees there, and started a Senior Citizens Group in 1990. Her volunteer service included the Annual Walk for Warmth and Annual Crop Walk for 25 successive years, and various duties at Gull Lake Ministries for numerous years. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Putnam Funeral Home in Union City. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday with one hour of visitation prior to the service at Putnam Funeral Home. James Edward Hobart, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at T. J. Samson Community Hospital.  A native of Coldwater, he was a son of the late Rex Allen Hobart and Crescent Bell Glant Hobart. He was a United States Navy veteran and a retired engineer at GTE. He was a member of Glasgow Baptist Church, where he also served as deacon, was a member of the Sanctuary Choir and a worker with the Awana program that endeavors to teach scriptures to young people. He loved to sing and discuss and share his faith.  Survivors include his wife, Betty Isenberg Hobart; one daughter, Julie Hobart Seagroves of Durham, N.C.; one son, Jerrold “Jerry” Edward Hobart and his wife, Becky, of Glasgow, Kent.; one grandson, Blake Edward Hobart of Glasgow, Kent.; one brother, Fred Hobart and his wife, Deanna, of Coldwater and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Glasgow Baptist Church. Burial, with military honors provided by Glasgow Chapter 20 DAV, was held in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Johnny Mack Sheets, 60, of Moulton, Ala. died Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009, at the University of Alabama Hospital. He was born Jan. 12, 1949, in Fremont, Mich., to Arthur Jack and Vera (Owens) Sheets. He graduated from Jonesville High School, Jonesville, in 1968. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He is survived by two daughters, Dawn and April Sheets; one sister, Donna (Fred) Johnson of Trinity, Ala.; three brothers, Carlton Sheets of Hillsdale, Thomas (Rebecca) Sheets of Quincy and Timothy Sheets of Royal Oak and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arthur Jack Sheets Jr. Funeral services were held Sunday, Nov. 15 at Parkway Funeral Home in Trinity, Ala., with the Rev. Marcus Lipscomb officiating. Burial was at East Lawrence, Memorial Gardens Cemetery.   |

Joyce A. Bishop, age 82, of Adrian passed away Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Provincial House. Joyce was born on Christmas Day 1926, in Adrian, the daughter of William and Lila May (Rineheart) Krouse. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1944, and then attended Riggs Beauty School. On Nov. 8, 1946, Joyce married Robert Bishop in Adrian. Robert, her devoted husband of more than 63 years, survives. Joyce worked for Michigan Mutual Insurance for 26 years, retiring in the early 1980s. Joyce was the president of Adrian City Fire Belles, a member of the Lady Elks, and also a member of the VFW Auxiliary where she was honored for volunteering. In addition to her husband, Joyce is survived by three brothers, Jack (Vivian) Krouse of Clayton, Robert (Norma) Krouse of Madison Center and Sam (Pete) Krouse of Holland, Mich.; a sister, Fay (Donald) Reed of Blissfield; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Joyce will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Christopher Brundage officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Kathryn L. Weaver, “Aunt Tat,” age 90, of Jasper passed away Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009, at her home. Kathryn was born June 12, 1919, in Adrian, the daughter of Otto and Myrna (Baily) Griewahn. On June 29, 1940, she married Roy T. Weaver in Wauseon. After celebrating 40 years of marriage, Roy preceded her in death in 1980. Kathryn was a talented painter and enjoyed gardening. She was lovingly known as “Aunt Tat” to many friends and neighbors. Kathryn is survived by her son, Melvin “Butch” (Garnett) Weaver of Beaver Dam, Ariz.; a grandson, Bradley (Susan) Weaver of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two great-granddaughters, Lacey and Alyssa; a brother, Carl (Julia) Griewahn of Kalamazoo; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lenore Baker and Elizabeth Webster; and two brothers, Kenneth and Wayne Griewahn. Lawrence Kutzley, 86, of Morenci passed away Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Heartland of Wauseon in Wauseon, Ohio. He was born on April 11, 1923, in Seneca Township, the son of Arthur and Birdie (Deline) Kutzley. He was married to Luva Mae Addleman in Seward, Ohio, by the late Rev. A. T. Cox, and she survives. Lawrence was a life-long resident of the Morenci-Sand Creek area.  He was a farmer, truck driver and carpenter. After retiring his hobby was repairing and refinishing old furniture as well as building new furniture. He was a 4-H Club leader of the Bean Creek Valley Club for more than 30 years and a life member of the Lenawee County Fair Association. Besides his wife, Luva, Lawrence is survived by two sons, Gaylord (Kay) Kutzley of Morenci and Douglas Kutzley; one daughter, Linda (David) Nafziger of Archbold, Ohio; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Burton; six sisters, Ruth Keller, Myrna Smith, Florence Thomas, Velma Pulliam, Glenna Belle Lawson and Pauline Zemlo. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci, with the Rev. William VanValkenburg officiating. Merle K. Cox Jr., 69, of Hudson, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee County.  He was born Nov. 8, 1940, in Morenci, the son of Merle F. and Viola (Rudolph) Cox Sr.  He married Vergie (Borton) on Jan. 28, 1961, in Hudson and she survives. Merle retired as a plant supervisor for M & S Mfg. in Hudson in 2001, with over 40 years of service. His hobbies included woodworking, tinkering in the workshop on his son, Dean's excavating equipment and was an avid race fan, helping Fisher's Racing Team at Oakshade Raceway. Merle dearly loved his family and his grandchildren were the love of his life. Surviving Merle besides his wife, Vergie of 48 years are four children, Mark Cox of Adrian, Lynda (Michael) Hepker of Mackinac Island, Dean (Sandy) Cox of Hudson and Shane Cox of Hudson; one sister, Velda Reynolds of Lorain, Ohio; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.   He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Barbara Brown. Merton C. Wilson, 70, of Hudson, passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at his home, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee County. He was born May 26, 1939, in Adrian, the son of Roscoe C. and Cecil (Cadoo) Wilson. He married Janice Swiegart Sept. 3, 1960, in Hudson and she survives. Mert was a self-employed truck driver for M. Wilson Trucking, retiring in 2006, with over 40 years of service. He graduated from Hudson High School Class of 1957, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Thursday Afternoon Men's Golf League, Tuesday Morning Seniors Golf League and was proud to be a teammate on the 1956 State Championship Football Team in Hudson. Mert enjoyed golf, Hudson football, traveling and dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Surviving Mert besides his wife of 49 years, Jan, are two daughters, Teresa (Scott) Frantz of Hudson and Cathy Johnston of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Charles Wilson of Hudson and Steve (Amy) Wilson of Delta, Ohio; three brothers, Roscoe G. "Jerry" (Pat) Wilson of Manitou Beach, Ray (Donna) Wilson of Hudson and Richard (Peggy) Wilson of Adrian; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; honorary sister, Carrie Jones of Pittsford, and special friend Phelix Wright of Columbus. She was born Jan. 9, 1917, in Hillsdale, to George and Flora (Reynolds) Underhill. She was married April 30, 1934, to Kenneth Emerick and he preceded her in death in 1995. Mildred was a home caregiver, a wife, mother and grandmother. To Millie, her family was the center of her life. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale. Surviving are two children, Paula (Curtis) Dora of Jonesville and Steven (Cheryl) Emerich of Bellfair, Wash. Ten grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive. Norma G. Reed, age 60, of Kalamazoo, went home peacefully to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 4, 2009. Norma was born on Sept. 19, 1949, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Wayne and Irma L. (Beatty) Warfield. On Dec. 31, 1966, she was united in marriage to Mr. Robert(Bob)E. Reed, of Berrien Springs, Mich. Norma and Bob have been owners of The Hi-Lo Family Convenience Store since 1999 and have become great friends with many of their customers. For 25 years, Norma has been a foster parent for Family & Children Services of Kalamazoo, where she put her heart and soul into touching the lives of 41 children. Norma always wore a smile on her face and left a smile on the faces of those who had the chance to meet her. She had and loved a great sense of humor. Some of her hobbies included, cake decorating, coloring, playing corn-hole with her children, family cookouts in the backyard, attending her children's school events, and decorating the Christmas tree with her family. She enjoyed attending services at both Kalamazoo Valley Family Church and Cherry Creek of Portage with her family. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irma L.Warfield; and brother, Wayne Warfield. Norma is survived by her husband, Bob E. Reed; and their12 children, Robert (Jolene) Reed of Comstock Mich., Brian (Sharon) Reed of Sturgis Mich., Jason Reed of Gobles, Mich., Connie (Joseph) Edgley, Velma (Bucky) Block, Sasha Reed, Ashley Reed, Danielle Reed, Holly Reed, Danny Reed, Michael Reed, all of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Melissa (Jeff) Ward of Ohio.  Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, Bobby, Britney, Ashley, Stephanie, Heather, Angela, Mariah, Carmen, Kiana, Adam, Brandon and “Mamaws” special grandson, Daulton; her three great-grandchildren, Austin, Alexa, Aubrianna; her father Wayne (Dorothy) Warfield of Vicksburg, Mich.; a brother, Al Warfield of Delton, Mich.; a sister, Donna (Robert) Moore of Texas Corners, Mich., and several nieces, nephews and in-laws. The Reed family would like to give a special Thank-You to Larry Smith, Linda Swart and Betty Edgley. Family and friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today atRedmond Funeral Home, 4100 S. Westnedge Ave. (269) 343-6156 where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday with Pastor Brad Belcher officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Shay Elizabeth Hannah, age 34, was born Nov. 17, 1975, in Adrian, Mich., to Charles E. Hannah and Cheryl A. Seeburger-Hannah. Shay lost her courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, while resting at her home in Toledo with her special significant other, Christopher, her mother and daughters by her side. Shay is survived by her parents, stepmother Karen; daughters, Caprice and Faith; grandparents, Don and Betty Hannah, Elmer J. Seeburger and his wife, Nancy; and numerous aunts, cousins and friends. She also leaves behind her partner and caregiver, Christopher M. Alcock, and family pets. Visitation will be at the Handler Funeral Home in Tecumseh, Mich., from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10. Sister Eleanor Stech, formerly known as Sister Paul Ellen Stech, died on Dec. 6, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 83 years of age and in the 59th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Eleanor was born in Chicago, Ill., to Edward and Rose (Sima) Stech. Sister graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago, Ill., and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology and a Master of Science Degree in Biology from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., and a Master of Theology Degree in Scripture from St. John Seminary in Plymouth, Mich. Sister spent 21 years ministering in education in Detroit, Ypsilanti and Adrian, Mich.; Wilmette, Ill.; Oakland and Santa Cruz, Calif. She was a Pastoral Minister for two years at Sacred Heart in Auburn Heights, four years at St. Patrick in Brighton and one year at St. Philip Neri in Chicago. Sister was Director of Novices for the Adrian Dominican Sisters for five years and Co-Provincial of St. Dominic Province in Hometown, Il., for three years. She was Administrative Assistant for three years in the Overseas Chapter Office in Adrian. In Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, Sister was the co-founder of Centro Catalina, a center for economically poor women and children where she ministered for eight years. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2004. Sister Eleanor is survived by a brother, Robert Stech of Rockford, Mich., and a sister, Rosemary Zambon of San Jacinto, Calif. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, in the Rose Room at the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Stanley H. Green, age 57, of Clinton died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. He was born Sept. 10, 1952 in Tecumseh, the son of Herman Howard and Thelma (Godsey) Green. Stanley was employed by Zycom in Saline as an inspector for many years. He was an auxiliary  member of the Tecumseh V.F.W. #4187 and past member of the Jaycees. He was a 1970 graduate of Clinton High School. Stanley is survived by his mother, Thelma Green; one brother, Warren Green of Clinton; one sister, Eva (Michael) Cortright of Saline; one nephew, Christopher Cortright; one niece, Faith Penix; and one great-nephew, Conor Penix. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant brother. At his request, cremation has taken place. Violet C. Miller, age 96, of Albion, passed away Nov. 28, 2009 at Tendercare of Albion.  She was born Feb. 18, 1913, in Hillsdale County to Delbert and Chrissie (Perkins) Britton. She had worked in the Cambria area in 1968. When she moved to Albion, she worked as a laundress at Home Laundry. For 28 years Violet was married to Frank Parney who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1972, she married Robert “Bert” Miller who survives. She was a member of Leisure Hour Club in Albion. Violet enjoyed hunting, cooking and  baking, sewing and gardening. Survivors include: husband, Robert “Bert” Miller; daughter, Donelta Day and son, Junior and Martha Parney, all of Albion; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Parney; one brother, Ernest Britton; one half-brother, Garford Britton and half-sister, Audrey Seward. Zachariah Lane Tyler Bassage-Bates, 7 of Hesperia and formerly of Coldwater, passed away Thursday, De. 3, 2009 at his home.   Zach was born on Nov. 27, 2002 in Coldwater and moved to the Hesperia area in 2007. Zach enjoyed watching movies, especially the movie CARS and Shrek and loved to attend his brother and sisters sporting events at Hesperia Schools, especially cross-country, wrestling and track events. Zach touched the lives of many people and changed the way all pursue the journey of life. Most memorable moments for Zach would be watching Jordan and the Hesperia Panthers win the 2008 Division 4 State wrestling title and Gabbie run to All-State track and cross country and Dad pushed Zach to win the 2009 5K Run for Ralph’s Kids in New Era. Zac is survived by his mother, Kimberly Bassage of Fremont; his father, Bob Bates of Hesperia; his brother, Jordan Bates of Hesperia; sister, Gabrielle Bates of Hesperia; brother, Peyton Fowler-Bates of Allen; paternal grandparents, Roberta (Norman) Robertson of Williston, S.C.; Robert Bates Sr. of Coldwater; paternal great grandparents, Wesley and Betty Bates of Coldwater; Florence (Mack) Creech of Coldwater; his aunts, Rosalyn (Mike) Ambs of Union City and Cassandra Bates of Coldwater; his uncle, Wesley Bates of Coldwater and several great aunts and uncles.  Zach was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bob and Virginia Bassage. Visitation will be held Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with services at 1 p.m. at the Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.   |
