Cheryl O. (Millard) Decker, 53, was “crowned with loving kindness and tender mercies” and had her “youth renewed like the eagles” as she soared into eternity on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009 from Mesquite, Nev. She was raised in Coldwater. Behind her beautiful smile and pleasant charm was a strong, courageous woman in confident pursuit of “health or Heaven.” Over the past three years, she boldly faced the daunting challenges of recurring ovarian cancer, malignant ascites, pulmonary emboli, DVT blood clots, costochondritis, edema, ophthalmic migraines, anemia, pneumonia and finally two strokes. And yet, her enthusiasm helped her wake every day with the optimism that “Today” she would get better. And many days she did get better. She resolved to “live” every day even as she fought through the constant pain, and her spirit never let her down. Beneath her positive attitude and energetic exterior was a story of tragedy and perseverance in her youth that she rarely shared with others. Cheryl grew up in Coldwater. Her mother Alma Millard died when Cheryl was just five years old and her father Fred Millard died when she was seven. She and her siblings, Kathy, Fred, and Pam developed a strong bond as they tenaciously plotted ways to stay together. But, that was not to be as they were ultimately farmed out to separate foster homes. Cheryl was placed in a different foster home every year throughout her teen years. Yet, through it all, Cheryl’s innocent optimism and enthusiastic spirit helped her find her way in life. She worked very hard at everything she did and realized the direction of her life was her own personal responsibility. She believed in happiness and she found it, but not without heartache. Her first marriage, to Michael Richards, ended in divorce, but that did not jade her vision, nor dampen her spirit. She later married Bradley Decker of Grand Junction, Colo. and they shared over 24 years of marriage that brought them both great happiness as their lives of working together took them from Grand Junction, Colo. to Surprise, Ariz., and eventually to Mesquite, Nev. where they lived the past ten years. Together, they enjoyed friends, sports, travel, games, and extended family. Many people said they were “joined at the hip.” But even more so, they were “joined at the heart.” She attended grade school in Coldwater and graduated from high school in Quincy in 1974. She also attended Grand Rapids School of the Bible, Grand Rapids. Her professional pursuits included business, commercial banking and real estate. She wanted to do things well in all aspects of her life and she did them well. She could always be counted on to get the job done and she made sure it was done right. Her hallmarks were being accurate, fast, efficient and honest. She was intensely loyal. Her devotion to her husband and extended family was paramount. Cheryl chose to make her life what she wanted it to be, without casting blame on others nor on circumstances for whatever challenges lay in front of her. The same was true as a child and was clearly evident as she faced crushing health issues in what would otherwise have been considered the prime of her life. At the time of her death, she was nearing completion of a book that she hoped would be helpful to others. It chronicles parts of her life from which she learned significant lessons, most of which were in her youth. Completion of her book is planned. Cheryl was dearly loved and will be fondly remembered for her spirit, courage, optimism, enthusiasm and enduring love and loyalty. She always kept a great attitude even in the face of adversity. She was a fierce competitor and loved games. Texas Hold’em poker tournaments were her favorite along with a variety of games shared around the kitchen table and online. She had a sister Paula Sue who was seriously injured at the age of three and preceded her in death. Cheryl is survived by her husband Bradley of Mesquite, Nev., her sisters Kathy (Ervin) Cserni of Grand Junction, Colo., Pam (Phil) Schlade of Coldwater and her brother Fred (Theresa) Millard also of Coldwater, a step-sister Helen Strang of Jackson, four nieces (Angela Kastrup, Beckah Beyerbach, Trina Hisel and Alicia Eversole), three nephews (Alex Cserni, Wil Schlade and Bradley Millard), a step-son Kevin (Sarah) Decker, four step-grandchildren, and 13 great nieces and nephews. An informal memorial tribute will be held in Mesquite, Nev. on Sunday, Dec. 13 from 3-5 p.m. at the River Room of the Virgin River Hotel. All friends and acquaintances are invited.   Condolences may be sent to the family at PO Box 3119, Mesquite, NV, 89024. |

Rosene Elizabeth Baker Pierce, 104, died in Hospice Compassionate Care in Richmond, Ky. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born and raised in Hillsdale County, the daughter of Fred and Addie Bradley Baker. She was loved and respected by all who knew her in her long life. Before her marriage to Clark M. Pierce in 1929, Rosene taught for 5 years in a country, one-room, eight-grades schoolhouse. With her husband, a high school science and agriculture teacher, she lived in Romeo, Mich. where their two children were born. When parents Harold and Gertrude Pierce died at their land grant farm in lower Michigan, Clark and Rosene moved there and took over the chicken hatchery business and later, also raised Herford steers. Rosene was a member of the North Adams First Baptist Church, Country Women’s Improvement Club and the North Adams Women’s Club. She became Worthy Matron of the OES (Order of the Eastern Star). After her husband’s death in 1993, Rosene moved to Kentucky to be with her daughter. She visited the Richmond, Ky. Senior Center for many years where she made many friends. She lived at Assisted Living McCready Manor for 11 years before health problems caused her to move to Telford Terrace. Rosene was a lover of classical music, beautiful pressed glass, crocheter of many afghans for family members and Project Linus, and a wonderful cook. A special joy at her 100th birthday party was a rumble-seat ride down Main St. Richmond with Ray DeSloover at the wheel of his Model A Ford, a key to the city and a proclamation given her by Mayor Connie Lawson. Preceding her in death were her father and mother, two brothers and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Lorna Boewe (Karl-Heinz) of Richmond and one son, Dr. Fredrick H. Pierce (Mary Jo) of North Salem, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Rosene Elizabeth Pierce will be held at the First Baptist Church in North Adams 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 with the Reverend Fred Jensen officiating. Rosene will then be laid to rest in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Good Samaritan Fund of St. Andrews Place in Richmond, Ky.   |
