David G. White David G. White, age 70, beloved father, son, brother, and friend passed away suddenly on December 20, 2009. Born March 5, 1939 in Grosse Pointe Farms , Dave was a 49 year resident of St. Clair Shores. Dave was the owner of Dave White Video Services and a retired manager for Chatham Grocery Stores. He was an active member of WEVA and MIVA video associations, a support staff member of Wertz Warriors beginning in 1982, and spent a lifetime being a faithful fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Through his creative use of a camera, Dave touched many lives, but his greatest achievement and joy was being a father. No words can describe the loss felt by his children of their hero. He was a good man, a great friend, and a fantastic dad. Dave is survived by his eight children, David J. (Renee), Gregory (Darlene), Jeffrey (Mary), Dr. Kimberly (Michael) St. Marie, Steven (Cherie), Kathleen White, Keri (Kelley) Van Buskirk, and Ryan (Marisa), 11 grand children and mother Mary Ellen. He is predeceased by his father Garvie and siblings, Carolyn and Joseph. Instate Monday December 28, 2009 at 10 a.m. with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. at the Arthur J. Van Lerberghe Funeral Home, 30600 Harper, St. Clair Shores , between 12 and 13 Mile Roads. Pastor Joe Wenturine officiating. Frank J. Kalinowski, 89, of Hillsdale, formerly of Detroit, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Drews Place Bacon Street in Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 17, 1920, in Detroit, to Joseph and Frances (Wielinska)  Kalinowski. He was married Jan. 15, 1944, to Bridget A. Zawacki and she survives. Frank was a U.S. Army veteran having served during WWII. He retired after 25 years with the Detroit Police Department and 15 years with the U. S. Postal Service Security. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Men’s Club and the Knights of Columbus. Besides his wife Bridget, he is survived by a daughter, Janice (R. Harris) Russo of Kalamazoo; a son, Tim G. Kalinowski of Scottsdale, Arizona; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Frank was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Francine Blackmer; two sisters, Josephine Piontek and Helen Brock and a brother, Al Kelly. Memorial services for Frank J. Kalinowski will be held at a later date at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale. No visitation or calling hours will be held at this time. Gerald (Jerry) G. Bradley, Jr., 87, of Grand Rapids, formerly of the Lenawee and Hillsdale County areas and Florida, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009, at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. He was born on April 18, 1922 in Pittsford the son of Gerald G. and Chloe (Anspach) Bradley, Sr. Jerry graduated from Pittsford High School. He married Elaine A. Green on April 20, 1946 in Addison. She preceded him in death on Jan. 6, 2008. Jerry was a veteran of the U.S. Army and retired shift commander from the State Prison of Southern Michigan in Jackson. He was a two-time president of the Beverly Hills Lions in Florida and a lifetime member of the American Legion. Surviving are his son, James R. Bradley of Marion; daughter, Lynne M. (Thomas) Bradley-Horan of Sparta; and sister, Edna Mae (Park) Gregory of Belleville. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and sister, Elizabeth (Charles) Chaffin. Cremation has taken place. Geraldine E. Cox, 94, of Bryan Care & Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of Hillsdale, went to be with Jesus Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Amboy Township, north of Pioneer, Ohio, to William and Mildred (Hubbard) Robison. she married Leon Cox Nov. 29, 1935, in Pioneer and he preceded her in death May 11, 1999. Geraldine lived her married life in Waldron before moving to the Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale at the age of 87. She was previously employed by the Avon Co. for several years, and worked at Kustom Fit in Pioneer where she retired from. Geraldine graduated from Waldron High School in 1934. She loved working for the Lord, gardening, camping, fishing, watching birds from her kitchen window, loved cooking and canning, in which she always seemed to have some to share! Geraldine held Good News Club in her home for many years, and led many children to the Lord through her teachings on the Bible. She gave music lessons, taught Sunday school class, both youths and adults. She often would find time to help young mother’s with Bible study in her home. She was a member of the WCTU, Women’s Missionary Society, Munson United Brethren Church, church pianist for years and loved playing her saw whenever asked, manager of the Waldron Kountry Kitchen band and loved going to nursing homes and putting on programs for the residents. She said “just to see them smile” was worth it all! Before moving to the Bryan Rehab Center she was very active in the Hillsdale nursing home and dearly loved playing for the SonShine Singers. Surviving Geraldine are three daughters, Margaret (Jim) Gunder of Waldron, Audrey (Richard) Andrews, Marilynn (Robert) Frank all of Bryan, Ohio; brother, John (Joan) Robison of Ney, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was a blessing to many, and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Lawrence, William, Paul and Arthur Robison; and granddaughter, Paula Brandeberry. Funeral services for Geraldine will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Paul Webster and the Rev. Samuel Wickard officiating. Interment will be in Waldron Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to charity of donor’s choice. Harley Junior Wilson, 77, of Osseo, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009 at home. He was born Jan. 25, 1932 in Ransom Township to Harley F. and Vera (Lickley) Wilson. He was married May 26, 1967 to Mary Jane Raymond and she survives. Harley retired in 1997 from Hillsdale Tool and was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a life member of the Waldron Veterans of Foreign Wars. He loved fly fishing and took great pride in watering flowers for the city of Hillsdale. Surviving besides his wife Mary Jane are three daughters, Melissa (Richard) Miller of Harrison, Cindy (Tom) Elder of Quincy, Jo (Alston) Minor of Duluth, Ga.; three sons, Harley Eugene (Sabrina) Wilson of Hillsdale, Harley Dean (Janine) Wilson of Waldron, Raymond Lee (Lisa) Pepple of Pittsford; two sisters, Faith (Pat) Taylor of Adrian, Juanita Curtis of Hillsdale; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. James Herbert Wiginton, age 92, of Adrian, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Provincial House.  He was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Jasper, Alabama, to Calloway and Mary Frances (Harris) Wiginton. On Oct. 4, 1965, he married Elsie Hoyle Brown in Taylor, Michigan and she survives.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, during WWII. He had been employed by GM in Detroit for 28 years. James R. Cady, age 77, of Adrian passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Ebeid Hospice Residence in Toledo. James was born July 20, 1932, in Hudson, Mich., the only son and oldest child of Gret and Geraldine (Roney) Cady. He served his country in the United States Air Force. Jim worked in car sales in Lenawee County for more than 40 years. In Blissfield, he worked for Schwinn Chevrolet and Fisher Ford; and in Adrian, he worked for Raymond Ford and Greg Bell Chevrolet, where he retired in 1996. Jim was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, VFW Annis-Fint Post #1584, Moose Lodge #1034, and American Legion Post #275. Although Jim loved nature, he also enjoyed the big city and was especially fond of Chicago. Jim is survived by two daughters, Shirley (Randy) Raymo of Petersburg, Mich., and Carol (Mike) Beverly of Michigan Center, Mich.; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Chad) Neal of Stockbridge, Michael (Jenna) Addy of Monroe, Jessica Beech of Petersburg and Robert (Kimberly) Beverly of Northville; seven great-grandchildren, and one sister, Judy Titko of Indiana. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Joann Miller and Joyce Bailey. James R. Wolf, age 78 of Burr Oak, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at his home. Jim was born Sept. 24, 1931, in Flint, Mich., a son to the late Carl and Bury (Wolfenden) Wolf. Jim married Margo Cullen in Wayne, Mich., in 1951; this marriage ended in divorce.  In 1977, he married Esther (Eicher) Bennett in Leonidas. He attended high school in Wayne, graduating in 1949.  He received his degree in Mortuary Science at Wayne State School of Mortuary Science in 1955.  He worked at Lents Funeral Home in Wayne until 1960, then at Ted C. Sullivan Funeral Home in Detroit until 1968 when he moved to Three Rivers where he owned and operated Wolf Funeral Home.  In 1980 he moved to Pontiac to work for Sparks Griffin Funeral Home.  Jim held his mortuary license in Michigan and Florida. He learned to fly while in Three Rivers; became an aircraft owner and operator of an air taxi company.  He continued his interest in aviation, becoming a full time corporate pilot at Oakland/Pontiac until his retirement. While in Detroit he was president of the Jaycee’s and a member of the church choir at St. Mary’s of Redford Detroit.  He was a member of the Three Rivers Rotary Club, the Elks, and was actively involved in parish activities and music ministry with his guitar at Immaculate Conception.  He loved music and especially loved having friends come to play music for him.  He also loved Barbershop and sang tenor with the St. Joseph County Tune Trappers.  Jim was active in the Cursillo movement, a weekend program to help Christians grow and strengthen the faith of others.  He was a member of the Three Rivers Pilot’s Club, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the NRA. He loved working on tractors and going to tractor shows.  He had a collection of over 15 antique garden tractors which he had restored.  He was also an avid reader, reading a book a day.  Jim also loved fishing and hunting. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Esther; one son, Richard Wolf, of Grand Rapids; daughters, Mary (Jack) Killeen, of Bloomfield Hills, Greta Petty of Cincinnati; Karen (David) Schaefer of Cincinnati and Anne (John) Rice of Troy, Mich.; two step-sons, Terrence Bennett of Burr Oak and Frederic Bennett of Sheridan, Ariz.; step-daughter, Cheryl Waters of Leonidas; grandchildren, Charles Mooney of Detroit, Kevin and Kelly Wolf, of Grand Rapids, Noah and Abbey Rice of Troy, Kaitlyn and Samuel Schaefer of Cincinnati; step grandchildren, Melinda Bennett of Kalamazoo, Amy Waters of Leonidas, Stacy (Jason) Schwenk of Centreville; two step-great-grandchildren, Brandon Ford and Mia Schwenk. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one step-son, James Bennett. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 27, at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon.  Funeral services celebrating the life of James R. Wolf will be 11 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating.  Burial will follow at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Findley.  If desired, the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Jim to either the Three Rivers Health Hospice or the Colon Township Library Fund. John Henry Brown, age 82, of Adrian, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 24, 1927, in Port Gibson, Miss. to Isaiah and Beulah (Lucas) Brown. Laurence L. “Mr. Fieb” Fiebelkorn, age 83, of Sturgis, passed away Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born June 23, 1926, in Burr Oak, a son of the late Frank and Martha (Greenwalt) Fiebelkorn. Mr. Fieb had resided in the Sturgis and Burr Oak area his whole life. On June 30, 1945, he married Lola P. Milliman in Sturgis. He retired from Holy Angels School in Sturgis, where he had been employed as a custodian for seven years. Prior to that he had worked at G.F. Business Forms in Sturgis for 37 years until the business closed, and for several years he worked for Twin City Foods. Fieb truly loved the time when he was involved in farming. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sturgis, Loyal Order of Moose #574 and past member of the Eagles Lodge #1314, both in Sturgis, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 64 years, Lola; two daughters, Lana Sybesma of Sturgis and Sandee (Scott) Sweet of Sturgis; a son, Brian (Arlene) Fiebelkorn of Sturgis; seven grandchildren, Ryan (Amy) Sybesma, James (Jennifer) Fiebelkorn, Amy (David) Keeslar, Susan Fiebelkorn, Sarah (Daniel) Murray, Zackary Sweet and Logan Sweet; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Keitha Post of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; four brothers, Floyd Fiebelkorn, Delbert Fiebelkorn, Franklin Fiebelkorn and Lester Fiebelkorn; three sisters, Lucille Evert, Edna Fiebelkorn and Neva Mitchell; and two infant brothers. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Laurence L. “Mr.Fieb” Fiebelkorn will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. The Rev. Born in Dearborn, Mich., Mrs. Sackett, a homemaker, came to Florida in 1973 from Adrian, Mich. A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Adrian, and Our Lady Of Hope Catholic Church in Port Orange, she volunteered at the former Faulkner Street School in New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Mrs. Sackett loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, playing cards and Scrabble, and working crossword puzzles. Survivors include seven children, James and his wife, Laurie, of Franklin, Tenn., Michael and his wife, Carol, of Ft. Myers, Fla., Mary Hyatt and her husband, Robert, of Whitehall, Mich., Edward and his wife, Sheryl, of Fair Play, S.C., Raymond and his wife, Maria, of Portage, Mich., Patrick of South Daytona, Fla., and Sally LaClaire and her husband, William, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; one brother, Lewis Horger of Venice, Fla.; one sister, Rosemary Kirsch and her husband, Joe, of Tustin, Calif.; 36 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Mrs. Marguerite (Maggie) Babcock, age 87, died peacefully at Bay Bluffs nursing facility, Harbor Springs, Mich., the afternoon of Dec. 22, 2009. She was born in Weidman, Mich., on Nov. 27, 1922, the eldest of five children of Harry and Nellie (Leiter) Patterson. She married Norris "Charlie" Babcock in Angola, Ind., on Nov. 16, 1940. They moved to the Petoskey area, from Lansing, in 1948. She was a true friend to all lucky enough to know her. Marjorie Kendrick Marjorie Kendrick, age 90, of Armada, formerly of Washington Township, Gladwin and Detroit, died December 23, 2009. Marjorie was born in Detroit, a daughter of James and Margaret (nee McMaster) Fullerton. On January 30, 1939, Marjorie married Thomas L. Kendrick. Marjorie taught Sunday School for many years and was a former active member of a missionary society. Marjorie is survived by sons, David (Susan) Kendrick of Round Rock, Texas and Thomas G. Mary C. Beldock, 75, of Coldwater, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at her home. Interment of ashes will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Mary was born March 1, 1934 in Kansas City, Mo. to John and Agnes (Duda) Sotak. She married Franklin Beldock on March 14, 1952 in Colorado. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2006. Mary graduated from Beauty School in Alpena before opening a shop in her home, enabling her to be with her children. After many years in Alpena, her family moved to Coldwater, where Mary opened Style Studio which she owned until 2006. She began to specialize in wigs for both men and women in which she was currently still active. It became more than a business for her, it was her mission. She was passionate about providing hairpieces for people that needed them, especially those dealing with cancer. Mary was active with her children in school and their activities. She had formerly taught fifth grade catechism at St. Charles Church and was currently a member of St. Mary’s Church in Bronson. Mrs. Beldock enjoyed sewing, cooking, baking and dancing. She enjoyed spending time with her children and loved to listen to them play guitars. Mary was vibrant and full of life and was always doing nice things for others. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son David Beldock in 1981. Mary is survived by her sons Elton (Nancy) Beldock of Phoenix, Ariz., Lee (Joann) Beldock of Davisburg and Patrick (Elizabeth) Beldock of Vicksburg, her daughter Janet (Greg) Winter of Alpena, her brother Thomas Sotak of Kansas City, Mo. and her grandchildren Marcia (Ryan) Corby, Nathan (Grace) Beldock, Kristen (Bill) Bridge, Matthew Winter and Kathryn Winter. She has resided in the Kalamazoo area for the past 10 years, coming from Constantine and Sturgis. On Jan. 24, 1948, she married Henry S. Bir in LaGrange, Ind. He died Dec. 16, 1979. He was a homemaker and member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. She most enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grandchildren. Surviving are daughter, Stephanie J. Mary Lou Perrin, 79, of Nottawa, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at her home. Mildred T. Emerick, 92, of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Jan. 9, 1917 in Hillsdale to George and Flora (Reynolds) Underhill. She was married April 30, 1934 to Kenneth Emerick and he preceded her in death in 1995. Mildred was a home care giver, a wife, mother and grandmother. To Millie, her family was the center of her life. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale. Surviving are two children, Paula (Curtis) Dora of Jonesville and Steven (Cheryl) Emerich of Bellfair, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two daughters, Mary Lou Emerich and Sondra Rinker. Memorial services for Mildred Emerick will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale with Pastor Patti Beckman and the Rev. Richard Thorp officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at Sunset View Cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends for memorial visitation 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Nancy Kay McClelland was born on Sept. 5, 1944, in Ypsilanti. She grew up on a farm and belonged to 4-H and FHA as well as other youth organizations. She graduated high school in 1962, Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in 1965, Eastern Michigan University in 1970 with a Masters in Counseling, and the University of Michigan with a PhD in Education Administration in 1986. Through her career she was a classroom teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent of schools. She was the first president and charter member of Alaskan Women in Education Administration, as well as a member in good standing and as an officer in a number of professional organizations, and an Elder of the Skagway First Presbyterian Church. After retiring from education she was a law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service in Skagway, Alaska. She was a volunteer for years in the Skagway Volunteer Fire Department as an EMT III, an EMS Instructor, served as EMS lieutenant, a firefighter and a search and rescue technician. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, John L. McClelland and Estelle L. McWilliams, and her daughter, Jenny. She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Frank Wasmer; granddaughter, Dainean; siblings, Laura, Lee, Ruth, David, Nina, William; many cousins in and around Adrian; and 18 grandchildren. She was mom to many children, adopted, fostered and six international exchange students. She also leaves close ties with “Nancy’s Kids”, youth from the 1970s and ‘80s that she mentored and taught in a school setting, church youth groups and youth organizations. Nancy loved children and was always happiest when she was working with children. She passed away while on vacation with her husband and granddaughters in Orlando, Fla., on Nov. 13, 2009. She is mourned and will be missed all around the world. |

Richard A. “Dick” Bumpus of North Adams passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009 at The “Mac” McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born June 7, 1928 in Amboy Township the son of Charles and Gertrude (Peters) Bumpus. He is survived by his wife, Martha L. (Walters) Bumpus whom he married on Feb. 14, 1948; two children, Karen (Steve) Dewey, Susan (Alan) Cook all of North Adams; one daughter-in-law, Marcia Bumpus of North Adams; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Pauline McClue of Hillsdale; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Michael “Mike” Bumpus; two brothers; and three sisters. Mr. Bumpus retired in 1991 from Williams Mill in North Adams after 44 years of service. He was a member of the North Adams United Methodist Church and the Adams Grange # 286. He served as a volunteer fireman for many years with the North Adams Fire Department and also served on the North Adams-Jerome School Board in years past. At his request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Richard A. “Dick” Bumpus will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28 with Pastor Paul Hane officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Richard L. “Dick” Goetz, 90, of Riga passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family and the loving care of Hospice of Lenawee. Dick was born on July 10, 1919, in Monroe Township, Michigan, the son of Charles G. and Elfrieda (Tobian) Goetz.  On Oct. 11, 1940, Dick married the former Luella M. Walper.  She survives. Dick devoted his life to his family and farming.  He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga and in earlier years, served as the building inspector for Riga Township.  He enjoyed woodworking, especially building items for his grandchildren, traveling, golfing and spending time with his family. Surviving is his wife, Luella M. Goetz of Riga; three children, Mary Jane (Kent) Hull of Curtis, Mich., John (Beth) Goetz of Boca Raton, Fla. and James (Kathy) Goetz of Blissfield, Mich.; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three brothers, Earl (Joyce) Goetz of Riga, William (Mary) Goetz of Blissfield and Wendell (Alice) Goetz of Riga. Dick was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Kyle Goetz. Funeral services to celebrate the life of Dick Goetz will be held on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Elem3nt Church in Blissfield with Pastor Joe DiMarco officiating. Robert Burton Leister, age 87, and Helen May Leister, age 80, both of Constantine, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, from injuries sustained in a car accident. Bob was born July 10, 1922, in Constantine, a son of John and Tina (Nelson) Leister. He attended Constantine schools and served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a shipping clerk at Kirsch Company in Sturgis until he retired in 1980 after 37 years. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing and also worked the family farm with his brother Johnny. Helen was born Feb. 6, 1929, in Constantine, a daughter of Harold H. and Jennie Mae (Stenberg) Miller. She graduated from Constantine High School and worked at Kirsch Company in Sturgis for 14 years. She later obtained her nurse’s aide training at Glen Oaks Community College and worked in Home Health Care. Helen enjoyed playing softball on the church softball league. On May 22, 1948, Bob and Helen were married in Angola, Ind. They were both active members of Porter Baptist Church. They both enjoyed bowling in leagues, and spending time with family and friends. They loved camping and relaxing at the river. Surviving are their daughter, Carrie (Kirk) Moyer; grandsons Trace, Alec and BJ Moyer, all of Constantine; Bob’s brother LeRoy (Madelyn) Leister, Constantine, and sister-in-law Betty Leister, Sturgis; Helen’s brother, Charles (Cozette) Miller, Three Rivers; and many nieces and nephews. They were preceded in death by Bob’s parents; sisters Alice Jones, Mary Leister, Leona Ream and Darlene Hayes; and brothers Charles, Clarence, Lester, Harvey, Harley, Russell, Johnny and Forrest (Ted) Leister. Also preceding were Helen’s parents and sisters Mary Jane Almasi, Anna Marie Miller and Martha Clear. Cremation has taken place. Relatives and friends will be received from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at Porter Baptist Church in Constantine, where a memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. Pastor Robert LaPine and Pastor Patrick Neff will officiate. Roger H. Ries, 83, of Morenci, found peace in the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009. Roger had been a dialysis patient for seven years at the Adrian Dialysis Center. The kind caregivers there were very special to him and Roger grew to consider them family. Roger was born on Sept. 30, 1926, in Ogden Township, the son of Dewey and Leila (Leonard) Ries. On March 19, 1949, Roger married Phyllis J. Mannschreck who preceded him in death on May 3, 2007, after 57 years of marriage. Roger was a Blissfield High School Sugar Boy, graduating in 1944. He then enlisted in the U. S. Navy Sea Bees where he was a Machinist’s Mate 3rd Class and received the Asiatic-Pacific Area Campaign Medal. He served in the Construction Battalion in Guam. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, he was employed at Tecumseh Products for 42 years, retiring in 1988. Roger also farmed while working at Tecumseh Products and continued farming after his retirement. Roger was known for growing the best sweet corn for all his friends and neighbors to enjoy. Roger was active in and past president of the Morenci Kiwanis Club and enjoyed the many friendships formed within the club. He was a member of the Morenci United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing with his buddies Don, Crash, and Marion. Roger enjoyed spending time fishing and boating at the lake. Since his wife’s death, Roger spent most of his time with his children, Randy, Linda, and Connie. He loved his family and the many friends he made throughout his life. His kind smile will always be remembered. Roger is survived by his children Randy (Linda) Ries of Adrian and Connie Ries of Manitou Beach, a granddaughter Lindsey (Branden) Krill of Tipton, and brothers Don Ries and Max (Rosie) Ries, a sister Kathryn (Crash) Carter, sister-in-law Norma Ries, and brother-in-law Marion (Connie) Mannschreck, and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers Jack Ries and Harold Ries, sisters-in-law Edith Ries, Marilyn Ries, and Carol Mannschreck. Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home in Morenci. The funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, 2009, at the Morenci United Methodist Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Morenci. Rosene Elizabeth Baker Pierce, 104, died in Hospice Compassionate Care in Richmond, Ky. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born and raised in Hillsdale County, the daughter of Fred and Addie Bradley Baker. She was loved and respected by all who knew her in her long life. Before her marriage to Clark M. Pierce in 1929, Rosene taught for 5 years in a country, one-room, eight-grades schoolhouse. With her husband, a high school science and agriculture teacher, she lived in Romeo, Mich. where their two children were born. When parents Harold and Gertrude Pierce died at their land grant farm in lower Michigan, Clark and Rosene moved there and took over the chicken hatchery business and later, also raised Herford steers. Rosene was a member of the North Adams First Baptist Church, Country Women’s Improvement Club and the North Adams Women’s Club. She became Worthy Matron of the OES (Order of the Eastern Star). After her husband’s death in 1993, Rosene moved to Kentucky to be with her daughter. She visited the Richmond, Ky. Senior Center for many years where she made many friends. She lived at Assisted Living McCready Manor for 11 years before health problems caused her to move to Telford Terrace. Rosene was a lover of classical music, beautiful pressed glass, crocheter of many afghans for family members and Project Linus, and a wonderful cook. A special joy at her 100th birthday party was a rumble-seat ride down Main St. Richmond with Ray DeSloover at the wheel of his Model A Ford, a key to the city and a proclamation given her by Mayor Connie Lawson. Preceding her in death were her father and mother, two brothers and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Lorna Boewe (Karl-Heinz) of Richmond and one son, Dr. Fredrick H. Pierce (Mary Jo) of North Salem, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Rosene Elizabeth Pierce will be held at the First Baptist Church in North Adams 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 with the Reverend Fred Jensen officiating. Rosene will then be laid to rest in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Surviving besides her husband Lawrence, are her father Carl Campbell; a daughter, Alyssa Lambert of Hillsdale; a son, Mark Ballard of Florida; a step-daughter, Autumn (Jonathon) Kerney of Canton; three sisters, Sandra (Melvin) Johnson of Osseo, Phyllis (Richard) Sawyer of Hillsdale and Peggy Strachan of Taylor; two brothers, Carl Stephen Campbell of Adrian and David Campbell of Marquette; and three grandchildren. Sharon was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral services for Sharon M. Ortwine will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with the Rev. Thomas Mann officiating. Interment will follow at Kirby Cemetery, Adams Township. The family will receive friends for visitation 11 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Thomas G. McNamara, 70, of Blue School Road, White Pigeon, died Dec. 2-, 2009, at his home following a short illness. He was born Dec. 7, 1939, in Detroit, a son of Glenn and Alberta G. (Beadle) McNamara. Thomas lived his early life in Kalamazoo and Klinger Lake and was a graduate of Howe Military School. He attended college and spent most of his life in the White Pigeon area. He was owner and operator of G&A Truck Line, Commercial Leasing, a farmer and last worked with VRT, all of White Pigeon. He worked to TO-MA-GL-PA horse ranch, specializing in quarter horses. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his grandchildren, snowmobiling, camping, travel to Florida and was a three time champion in hydroplane boat racing. He is survived by three sons, Glenn (Joani) McNamara, Patrick (Shelle) McNamara, Marc (Michelle) McNamara, all of White Pigeon; nine grandchildren, Myste Kehoe, Eric Hill, Mitchell, Matthue, Melissa, Michael, Cassandra, Thomas James and Megan McNamara; special friends, Reggie and Vicki Platz and Steve and Nancy Rank. He was preceded in death by his parents. Relatives and friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon where services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Wilbur Brandli officiating. Entombment will be in the McNamara Family Mausoleum in White  Pigeon Township Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the West Michigan Cancer Center or Three Rivers Hospice. Viola Mae Rowe, 76, of Colon, Mich., passed away early Sunday morning, Dec. 20, 2009, at the Laurels of Coldwater in Coldwater, Mich. She was born July 14, 1933, in Hamilton County, Ind., a daughter to the late Chester and Minnie (Salisbury) Inman. Viola had resided in Colon since 2000. Prior to that she had lived in Sturgis for many years and her early life was spent in the Brighton, Ind., area and she graduated from Brighton High School with the class of 1951. In 1971, she married David Rowe. She had been employed by Grumman Olson in Sturgis for 12 years. Prior to joining Grumman Olson, she had worked at the Ivers Leigh Company in Shipshewana, Ind. Viola enjoyed reading, time spent in the sun and traveling. She is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, David; one daughter, Sheila (Jay) Wilkins of Cummings, Ga.; one son, Marvin (Sue) Smith of Sturgis; step-daughter, Kimberly (Mark) Larimer of Sturgis; step-son, Roland (Lori) Rowe of Sturgis; eight grandchildren, Jeremy (Tera) Rowe, Alexis (Carl) Flowers, Andrea Rowe, Jake Rowe, Josh (Angela) Larimer, Merriah (Steve) Moore, Ashley (Darren) McKnight and Abi Larimer; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Alvin (Nancy) Inman of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. Her parents; and two daughters, Franka Friend and Yolanda Friend, preceded her in death. The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, (269) 651-2331. Funeral services celebrating the life of Viola Mae Rowe will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Rev. James Bender, of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis, will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Rowe’s memory consider the Alzheimer’s Association, 2300 Portage St., Suite 341, Kalamazoo, MI 49001. Walter A. Ross Walter A. Ross, age 86. He was born in Detroit, Michigan. He was predeceased by his parents Walter J. and Marie (Karasinski) Ross. He was a World War II veteran where he served in the United States Coast Guard in the Atlantic and Pacific Campaign's. He married Delphine (Szankin) in 1950. Dear father of Howard (Nanette) Ross, Mark (Kim) Ross, Diane (Gregg) Meldrum and David (Julie) Ross. Grandfather of Timothy, Jessica, Amanda, Adam, Amy and Henry. He was predeceased by his sister Louise Cagle. He was a member of VFW Post 2358 of Roseville and Amvets Post #0027. He was retired from Chrysler after 35 years as a tool and die maker.
