Austin Michael Boyd, precious son of Jennifer Siler and Daniel Boyd, Jr., both of Coldwater, was stillborn on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009 at the Oak Grove Cemetery Chapel. Visitation will be held prior to the service, beginning at 10:30 a.m., also at the cemetery chapel. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. In addition to his parents, Austin is survived by sisters Lisa Balowski and Jenna Boyd, maternal grandparents Lori Siler and Steven (Debra) Siler, paternal grandparents Wanda (James) Covey, maternal great grandmother Barbara Wigent, paternal great grandmother LaVonne Moore, all of Coldwater, maternal great grandparents Samuel (Barbara) Siler of San Antonio, Texas and many aunts and uncles. Austin was preceded in death by his grandfather Daniel Boyd, Sr., in 1993. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Arrangements are being cared for by the Dutcher Funeral Home.   |

G. Michael Bowers, age 60, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. He was born Jan. 15, 1949 in Ft. Wayne, Ind., the son of Bob and Evelyn (Tester) Bowers. On Nov. 9, 1985, he married Rose A. McGrath, who survives in Paulding, Ohio.   He was employed by Stykemain Chevrolet Pontiac of Paulding, Ohio, retiring in 2006. He was a Viet Nam US Army veteran; 1967 graduate of Antwerp High School; a member of Viet Nam Veterans of America, Defiance, Ohio; VFW Post #587, Fraternal Order of Eagles #2405 and American Legion of Antwerp, Ohio. He loved spending time with family and friends fishing and camping; 50’s and 60’s music, and cruising in his 1972 Chevy Nova; and his dog “Gunner”. He is survived by his wife Rose Bowers, Paulding, Ohio; his step-mother Sherry Bowers, Coldwater; children:  Stacy (Jason) Calhoun, Glendale, Ariz., Stephanie Ball, Churubusco, Ind., Steve (Lena) Mawer, and Jon (Monette) Mawer, both of Upper Sandusky, Ohio; 11 grandchildren: Whitney, Madeline, Mason and Corbin Calhoun, Taylor Bowers, Kennedy McMichael, Chloe Ball and Seth, Troy, Owen and Emma Mawer; two brothers, Alan (Sue) Bowers, Ney, Ohio, and Jim (Sandy) Bowers, Antwerp, Ohio; a sister, Linda (Joe) Messmann, Payne, Ohio; and two step brothers, Matt (Tonya) Bowers, Coldwater and Bobbie (Scott) Welke, Quincy. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Dennis. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 17 at the Antwerp United Methodist Church with Rev. Michael Schneider officiating. Burial will be in Live Oak Cemetery, Paulding, Ohio with military graveside services. Visitation will be 2–9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Den Herder Funeral Home and one hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Donations may be made to Antwerp War Monument. Gail N. Frick, 62, of Butler Township, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born Oct. 21, 1947, in Ferndale to Roy F. and Juanita H (Ledlie) Wellein and graduated from Pittsford High School in 1965. She was a secretary for Frick’s Auto Repair & Towing in Butler. Gail was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed casinos and spending time with her grandchildren.  On Nov. 16, 1968, she married David Frick and he survives. Also surviving are son, Pete (Billie Jo) Frick of Quincy; sister, Brenda Wellein of Albion; mother, Juanita Wellein of Jonesville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and brother Richard. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the George White Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Clyde Wonders and Matthew Jensen officiating. Interment will follow in Whig Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled 4-8 p.m. Thursday. Gary Bryce Landess, age 74, of Colon, passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Three Rivers. Gary was born May 20, 1935, in Chicago, a son to the late Bryce and Vera (Stackhouse) Landess. Gary grew up in Chicago where he graduated from Kelly High School. He had spent most of his adult life in Colon. He had served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. On July 3, 1965, he married Ruth Thrams in Colon. He had worked for the former Transagram Co. and Harter Co. both of Sturgis and later retired from Michigan-Indiana Power Company of Three Rivers. Gary enjoyed Bowling, golfing, arts and crafts and especially his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Colon; three sons, Tim (Cheryl) Landess of Troy, Steve Landess of Sherwood and Chris (Emily) Landess of Sturgis; four grandchildren, Sam, Allison, Shayna and Jacob Landess; two sisters, Marise Slonoff of Elk Grove, Ill., and Edna D’Ambrosio of California. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Randall and Ronald Landess and one sister, Betty Kilkenny. The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, from 2-5 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Gary B. Landess will be Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at 11  a.m.  from the funeral home with Pastor Donald Graham of the Colon United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery in Colon. If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Gary to the Colon Rescue Squad or the Colon Community Park. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. |

Geraldine E. Cox, 94, of Bryan Care & Rehabilitation Center, and formerly of Hillsdale, went to be with Jesus Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born Nov. 29, 1915, in Amboy Township, north of Pioneer, Ohio, to William and Mildred (Hubbard) Robison. she married Leon Cox Nov. 29, 1935, in Pioneer and he preceded her in death May 11, 1999. Geraldine lived her married life in Waldron before moving to the Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale at the age of 87. She was previously employed by the Avon Co. for several years, and worked at Kustom Fit in Pioneer where she retired from. Geraldine graduated from Waldron High School in 1934. She loved working for the Lord, gardening, camping, fishing, watching birds from her kitchen window, loved cooking and canning, in which she always seemed to have some to share! Geraldine held Good News Club in her home for many years, and led many children to the Lord through her teachings on the Bible. She gave music lessons, taught Sunday school class, both youths and adults. She often would find time to help young mother’s with Bible study in her home. She was a member of the WCTU, Women’s Missionary Society, Munson United Brethren Church, church pianist for years and loved playing her saw whenever asked, manager of the Waldron Kountry Kitchen band and loved going to nursing homes and putting on programs for the residents. She said “just to see them smile” was worth it all! Before moving to the Bryan Rehab Center she was very active in the Hillsdale nursing home and dearly loved playing for the SonShine Singers. Surviving Geraldine are three daughters, Margaret (Jim) Gunder of Waldron, Audrey (Richard) Andrews, Marilynn (Robert) Frank all of Bryan, Ohio; brother, John (Joan) Robison of Ney, Ohio; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was a blessing to many, and will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; four brothers, Lawrence, William, Paul and Arthur Robison; and granddaughter, Paula Brandeberry. Funeral services for Geraldine will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Paul Webster and the Rev. Samuel Wickard officiating. Interment will be in Waldron Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers those planning an expression of sympathy may make memorial contributions to charity of donor’s choice. James Allen Katcher James "Jim" Allen Katcher, age 57, of Macomb Township, died Sunday, December 13, 2009, at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Clinton Township. Jim was born September 23, 1952, in Detroit, a son of Louis James and Marjorie (nee Sutton) Katcher. On October 5, 1973, Jim married Cheryl Vandeberghe in St. Isidore Catholic Church, Macomb. Jim was a millwright for General Motors Corporation in Warren for 28 years and previously worked for Chrysler Corporation. Jim was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church and a previous member of Oakland County Sportsmen's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, sports, and working on cars. He especially enjoyed his dog "Buz." Mrs. Zimmerman worked for the Community Health Center of Branch County in radiology for over 30 years. She then worked for Dr. Manohar a few years before retiring in 2002. Judy enjoyed socializing and going to breakfast with her family and friends, she enjoyed shopping at yard sales, hunting for antiques and most of all she enjoyed her dog “Millie.” Judy is survived by her husband Dean, her son Edward and Dawn Zimmerman of Ocala, Fla., her daughters Lila and Randy Roedema of Aurora, Colo. and Lauren and Brad Keith of Coldwater, her sisters Yvonne and Jerry Letts of Quincy and Mary Anne and Will Miller of Parma, her grandchildren Edward Zimmerman Jr., Richard Zimmerman, Justin Potts, Kevin Nowak, Keith Nowak, Lee Keith and Taylor Keith. Mary Ann Jones Mary Ann Jones, affectionately known as the "Candy Lady," age 86, of St. Clair Shores, Mich., died December 8, 2009. She was born August 21, 1923, in Crofton, Kentucky. She was a member of Stephen Temple Church of God in Christ in Mt. Clemens, Mich. since its inception more than 70 years ago. She was a dedicated and faithful member. She retired from General Motors in 1980 after 37 years of employment. She leaves to cherish her memories four grandchildren, Michele Louise Coker, Della Lou Ann Pointer, Clarissa Regina Coker, and Hannon D. Coker, Jr.; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother Otis Hopson. Mary Grace Schwartz, age 85, of Adrian died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at  Provincial House. She was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Adrian to Frederick Matthew and Grace Blanche (Hoag) Burkert. On Aug. 5, 1948, she married Robert J. Schwartz. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 1991. Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Christian Mothers. She had been a volunteer at Bixby Hospital for 30 years. Mary is survived by two sons, James (Pam) Schwartz of Adrian and Matthew (Laura) Schwartz of Adrian; four daughters, Cecelia “Ceal” Schwartz of Adrian, Marian (Wayland) Echelbarger of Adrian, Barbara (Richie) Gallatin of Sand Creek and Ann (Robert) Love of Adrian; a sister, Kathryn Venia of Tecumseh; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Richard McLaughlin of Adrian, Ken and Genny Schwartz of Adrian, Catherine Wielfaert of Britton and Roger Scheuerman of Holland; and 14 grandchildren, Kathryn, Sarah, and Robert Love, Margaret Echelbarger, Andrea, Megan and Jessica Gallatin, Michelle and Daniel Schwartz, Matthew and Paul Schwartz, and Robert, Hannah and Jacob Schwartz. In addition to her husband, Robert, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles Schwartz; three sisters, Helen Williamson, Thelma Dempsey, and Frances McLaughlin; and two brothers, Frederick Burkert and Henry Burkert. The Funeral Liturgy for Mary will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. David Hudgins as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Merle K. Cox Jr., 69, of Hudson, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2009, at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee County.  He was born Nov. 8, 1940, in Morenci, the son of Merle F. and Viola (Rudolph) Cox Sr.  He married Vergie (Borton) on Jan. 28, 1961, in Hudson and she survives. Merle retired as a plant supervisor for M & S Mfg. in Hudson in 2001, with over 40 years of service. His hobbies included woodworking, tinkering in the workshop on his son, Dean's excavating equipment and was an avid race fan, helping Fisher's Racing Team at Oakshade Raceway. Merle dearly loved his family and his grandchildren were the love of his life. Surviving Merle besides his wife, Vergie of 48 years are four children, Mark Cox of Adrian, Lynda (Michael) Hepker of Mackinac Island, Dean (Sandy) Cox of Hudson and Shane Cox of Hudson; one sister, Velda Reynolds of Lorain, Ohio; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.   He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Barbara Brown. At Merle's request cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or services. Merton C. Wilson, 70, of Hudson, passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009, at his home, under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Lenawee County. He was born May 26, 1939, in Adrian, the son of Roscoe C. and Cecil (Cadoo) Wilson. He married Janice Swiegart Sept. 3, 1960, in Hudson and she survives. Mert was a self-employed truck driver for M. Wilson Trucking, retiring in 2006, with over 40 years of service. He graduated from Hudson High School Class of 1957, was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Thursday Afternoon Men's Golf League, Tuesday Morning Seniors Golf League and was proud to be a teammate on the 1956 State Championship Football Team in Hudson. Mert enjoyed golf, Hudson football, traveling and dearly loved his wife, children and grandchildren. Surviving Mert besides his wife of 49 years, Jan, are two daughters, Teresa (Scott) Frantz of Hudson and Cathy Johnston of Columbus, Ohio; two sons, Charles Wilson of Hudson and Steve (Amy) Wilson of Delta, Ohio; three brothers, Roscoe G. "Jerry" (Pat) Wilson of Manitou Beach, Ray (Donna) Wilson of Hudson and Richard (Peggy) Wilson of Adrian; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; honorary sister, Carrie Jones of Pittsford, and special friend Phelix Wright of Columbus. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Larry Wilson. Mass of Christian Burial for Mert will be 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. H. Mildred T. Emerick, 92, of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Jan. 9, 1917 in Hillsdale to George and Flora (Reynolds) Underhill. She was married April 30, 1934 to Kenneth Emerick and he preceded her in death in 1995. Mildred was a home care giver, a wife, mother and grandmother. To Millie, her family was the center of her life. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale. Surviving are two children, Paula (Curtis) Dora of Jonesville and Steven (Cheryl) Emerich of Bellfair, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two daughters, Mary Lou Emerich and Sondra Rinker. Memorial services for Mildred Emerick will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale with Pastor Patti Beckman and the Rev. Richard Thorp officiating. Rita J. Brandys, age 67, of Wellston, and formerly of Centreville, passed away Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at the Three Rivers Area Hospital Emergency Room. Rita was born Sept. 24, 1942, in Colon a daughter to the late Wilfred M. and Patience M. (Sprowl) Wing. Rita grew up in Colon, graduating from Colon High School with the Class of 1960. Later she had lived in Mendon and Centreville, moving to Wellston in 2004. On May 18, 1963, she married Kenneth T. Brandys in Mendon. She had worked for Montgomery Wards in Sturgis, later as a bank teller for Citizens Bank in Colon and also at the Leonidas Bank, for Universal Motor Coach of Sturgis, and also for Syndicate Store Fixtures of Sturgis. Rita enjoyed collecting antiques, cooking, traveling and especially time spent with her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Wellston; children, Brett (Shelley) Brandys of Wellston, Tim (Kim) Brandys of Centreville and Tammy Brandys and Laurie Snyder of Three Rivers; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Mitch) Lewman, Kristen, Colin, T.J., Alaney, Keith and Adrian; brother, Ronald J. Wing of Colon; step-mother,  Betty Wing of Englewood, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Rita J. Robert Pfund, 86, of Morenci passed away Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at his daughter's home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 26, 1923, in Wauseon, Ohio, the son of Charles and Hattie (Barnhart) Pfund. On Aug. 17, 1957, in Angola, Ind., he married Alene Lorraine Buyer. She preceded him in death on Nov. 15, 1976. Robert lived most of his life in the Morenci area. He was employed at Bohn Aluminum in Adrian, retiring in 1985. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from January of 1943 through January of 1946, and was a member of the Morenci American Legion Post #368. Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Pfund of Adrian; a sister, Irene Moran of Morenci; two brothers, Don (Betty) Pfund of Morenci and Richard (Ann) Pfund of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and -nephews. Besides his wife, Alene, Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a son in infancy, and a brother, Edward Pfund. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Eagle Funeral Home-Charles Fink Chapel in Morenci with Gail Blum officiating. Roberts Peteris Gudrups, 98, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Sunday morning, Dec. 13, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug.3, 1911, in Latvia, a son to the late Ernest and Latte Gudrups. Mr. Gudrups had had resided in Sturgis for the past 51 years coming from Germany where he lived for 15 years. His early life was spent in Latvia. He was married to Emilija P. He had spent the last 50 years planting and caring for his flowers and trees at his “Paradise” on the three acres of his land. He is survived by his loving family, daughter, Vija (Theo) Vredeveld, Wyoming, Mich.; son, Andy Gudrups of Sturgis; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, all of Grand Rapids; sister,  Amanda Gulbe of Latvia; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lilija and Jacques Keeslar of Sturgis. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Roberts P. Gudrups will be held at his home at a later date in the spring of 2010. Rosene Elizabeth Baker Pierce, 104, died in Hospice Compassionate Care in Richmond, Ky. on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2009. She was born and raised in Hillsdale County, the daughter of Fred and Addie Bradley Baker. She was loved and respected by all who knew her in her long life. Before her marriage to Clark M. Pierce in 1929, Rosene taught for 5 years in a country, one-room, eight-grades schoolhouse. With her husband, a high school science and agriculture teacher, she lived in Romeo, Mich. where their two children were born. When parents Harold and Gertrude Pierce died at their land grant farm in lower Michigan, Clark and Rosene moved there and took over the chicken hatchery business and later, also raised Herford steers. Rosene was a member of the North Adams First Baptist Church, Country Women’s Improvement Club and the North Adams Women’s Club. She became Worthy Matron of the OES (Order of the Eastern Star). After her husband’s death in 1993, Rosene moved to Kentucky to be with her daughter. She visited the Richmond, Ky. Senior Center for many years where she made many friends. She lived at Assisted Living McCready Manor for 11 years before health problems caused her to move to Telford Terrace. Rosene was a lover of classical music, beautiful pressed glass, crocheter of many afghans for family members and Project Linus, and a wonderful cook. A special joy at her 100th birthday party was a rumble-seat ride down Main St. Richmond with Ray DeSloover at the wheel of his Model A Ford, a key to the city and a proclamation given her by Mayor Connie Lawson. Preceding her in death were her father and mother, two brothers and one sister. Surviving are one daughter, Joan Lorna Boewe (Karl-Heinz) of Richmond and one son, Dr. Fredrick H. Pierce (Mary Jo) of North Salem, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services to honor the life of Mrs. Rosene Elizabeth Pierce will be held at the First Baptist Church in North Adams 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 12 with the Reverend Fred Jensen officiating. Rosene will then be laid to rest in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Good Samaritan Fund of St. Andrews Place in Richmond, Ky.   |

CORTEZ, Fla. — Lorraine Marguerite (née Swiger) Freeman Yount, of Cortez, Fla., died Dec. 11, 2009, in Bradenton, Fla.She was born in Paris in Mecosta County on Feb. 6, 1919, to Lewis DeForest Swiger and Josephine Alberts Swiger.Lorraine married her first husband, Edd Freeman, in 1941, and her second husband, Rufus Yount, in 1969. She retired to Florida in the early 1970s.Blessed with strong ambition, an outgoing personality, and natural beauty, she was carried to unusual heights in the days before women had many opportunities. She was a reporter for the Traverse City Record-Eagle in the 1940s. She was appointed Friend of the Court and later Justice of the Peace in Lake City. She later operated her own bail bonding company, covering northern Michigan.She is survived by her daughters, Josette Rae Freeman of Sarasota, Fla., and Jacquelyn Freeman of Traverse City; a sister, Coila DeYoung of Martinsville, Va.; two grandsons, Eric Hulsman (Lori) of Atlanta, Ga., and Jordan Lindberg (Marcy) of Traverse City; great-grandsons, Connor and Kyle Hulsman and Miles Lindberg; and nieces and nephews.A gathering of friends will take place at Cortez Trailer Park.Arrangements have been made by National Cremation and Burial Society in Sarasota, Fla. |

Vera Mae Lawler, a long time resident of Quincy, passed away at the age of 103 on Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009 in Bradenton, Fla.  She was born in Odell, Ill. on June 22, 1906, the only child of Rudolf and Ella (Meier) Stahl. Vera graduated from the Odell High School in 1923 and married James T. Lawler of Dwight, Ill. in 1926. The Lawlers moved to Quincy in 1936, where Mr. Lawler operated a dairy farm and Vera worked for the City of Coldwater in the city manager’s office, retiring in 1977 after 23 years. Vera was a lifelong member of the Royal Neighbors of Illinois and the Pythian Sisters of Michigan. She enjoyed bowling, card playing and belonged to the Jolly Twenty Card Club. Vera and her husband purchased a home in Cortez, Fla. in 1974, and after they both retired in 1977, enjoyed spending the winter months there. Vera continued to spend her winters in Florida after her husband passed away in 1983 and enjoyed perusing her interests in shuffleboard, card playing and needlepoint. She will be greatly missed by her family including daughter Betty Luty of Quincy, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Gudrun Lawler of Berlin, Germany, grandchildren Marc Luty and Michelle Luty of Jackson, four great grand children and two great great grand children. A graveside memorial will be held in the spring where she will be laid to rest with her husband in the Quincy Cemetery. Violet C. Miller, age 96, of Albion, passed away Nov. 28, 2009 at Tendercare of Albion.  She was born Feb. 18, 1913, in Hillsdale County to Delbert and Chrissie (Perkins) Britton. She had worked in the Cambria area in 1968. When she moved to Albion, she worked as a laundress at Home Laundry. For 28 years Violet was married to Frank Parney who preceded her in death in 1960. In 1972, she married Robert “Bert” Miller who survives. She was a member of Leisure Hour Club in Albion. Violet enjoyed hunting, cooking and  baking, sewing and gardening. Survivors include: husband, Robert “Bert” Miller; daughter, Donelta Day and son, Junior and Martha Parney, all of Albion; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Parney; one brother, Ernest Britton; one half-brother, Garford Britton and half-sister, Audrey Seward. Funeral services are 11 a.m.Wednesday, at J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home,811 Finley Drive, Albion, with the Rev. Walter Hicks officiating. Interment will be at Cambria 1 Cemetery.
