Erwin Arthur Krause Erwin Arthur Krause "Jiggs", age 92, beloved husband of 24 years of Nathalie (Sudau) Krause and the late Doris (Leitch) Krause, passed away peacefully March 3, 2010 in Chico, CA. Mr. Krause was the fifth of nine children of Arthur and Clara Krause of Richmond (Muttonville). He was known for his great wit and ready smile even to the last. Erwin Krause attended grammar school in Richmond and graduated from Richmond High School, earning an excellent academic record, holding class offices each year and being elected president of his senior class. Mr. Krause was a business owner in Mount Clemens for many years. After World War II, Erwin used his veteran's benefits to purchase a gas station and tire service business which flourished. In the late 1960s, Krause Tires had increased such that he purchased a large Gratiot Ave lot where he moved the business sharing the site with his wife, Doris's, beauty shop. Over his lifetime, Erwin Krause worked in many occupations starting on the farm owned by his parents. He also worked at Mount Clemens Pottery, in tool & die making, maintenance, vending machine rentals, real estate sales, and banking. During the war, Mr. Krause served as Tech Sergeant in the 8th U.S. Army Signal Corps charged with communications between the U.S. and Japan. He completed his basic training at Fort Riley, Topeka, Kansas winning a sharpshooter medal for rifle marksmanship. In 1946, his unit left Fort Ord, California on a ship bound for an unknown destination and after 3 weeks, landed in Yokohama, Japan. There he fulfilled his duties operating a signal light that conveyed messages about the arrival and departure of U.S. ships into the port. Near the end of the year, Erwin was informed of his mother's death back in Michigan and with his orders immediately suspended, he flew via Guam and Hawaii on his return trip, but sadly arrived too late to attend his mother's funeral. Mr. Krause married his high school girlfriend, Doris Leitch, and they lived and worked together until her passing in 1985. Later that year, he married Nathalie Sudau, who had been widowed in 1972. Erwin, Doris and Nathalie and her late husband, Donald Sudau, had all been high schools friends often double-dating. In his autobiography, Erwin describes himself as having fallen "madly in love" with Doris and "deeply in love" with Nathalie; he was a wonderful husband to them both. Erwin Krause has been an active member of Lutheran congregations in Michigan, Ontario, Florida and California. He was a past president of the Lions Club of Mount Clemens and a member of the Old Crowd. Erwin will also be missed by daughters, Janine Cuellar of Chico, Julie (Patrick) Hirschler of Concord, Mass.; as well as grandchildren, Kirsten and Stephane Hirschler, and Carlos, Nathalie, and Erwin Jr. Cuellar; and great-grandson, Caeden Meserve. He will also be missed by his sister, Viola Bandlow of Armada; and brother, Kenneth Krause of Richmond. Erwin has been preceded in passing by sisters, Marie Baars, Rena Russ, and Cloris Hartway; and brothers, Orville (Doc), Vern, and Harvey Krause. Eva Farris Eva (born Afifie Tamer) Farris was born on March 29, 1924, went home to be with the Lord on March 4, 2010. Eva joins her parents, Selma and Sam Tamer, her husband, Nabih Farris, who predeceased her in 1972. The oldest of the Tamer children, Eva survived her siblings who have waited for her return to them in heaven: Joseph, Sam, Pete, Sied, Martha (Conte) and Selina. Eva leaves behind nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-inlaw and dear friends. For many, she was the last link to the history, stories and connection to the Tamer family. Eva's life was filled with joy and grief. Her father died when she was fifteen years old, while her mother was pregnant with the youngest child, Selina. As the oldest, Eva helped to raise her brothers and sisters. Eva worked briefly in the factory at Colonial Broach during World War II when she was 17 years old. She married Nabih Farris when she was 20 years old. When her mother died in 1953, Eva became the head of the Tamer household. Her life revolved around her family while they were growing up on the east side of Detroit. Proud of her Lebanese heritage, she enjoyed Arabic music, she loved to cook and feed anyone who walked through her front door. Eva's husband, Nabih, died in 1972 and Eva lived with her brother, Joe, and her sister, Selina until 1985 when Joe died. Eva and Selina lived together until 2006 when Selina died. Eva survived the deaths of her loved ones with prayer and a strength that came from her faith in God. Eva's later years were lived alone where she was fiercely independent and spent her time crocheting, enjoying the flowers in her garden and waiting for visitors to stop in and share a meal. Eva's soulful, beautiful chestnut brown eyes will watch over her family from above. Arrangements have been made by A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Warren. Visitation at Saint Sharbel Church, 31601 Schoenherr Road, Warren, Michigan 48088, Monday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen is appreciated. |

Dr. Ian Thomas, a retired Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) chemist (1983-2000) and consultant, died at home Monday, March 1, 2010, surrounded by loved ones, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Prior to his career at LLNL, Ian worked for 20 years at Owens-Illinois Inc. in Toledo, Ohio. Ian was an inventor of the Sol-Gel anti-reflective coating, which was first successfully applied to the Nova laser and is now used on every high-powered fusion laser in the world today.  Ian shared many hobbies, his favorite being home-consumption wine making. During the annual harvest in his back yard, “Chateau Melville” came alive each year with family, friends and neighbors helping to pick and crush grapes, all the while enjoying being around Ian to learn the chemistry and art of wine making from a man who made it all seem so easy and fun. His wines won several awards. His hobbies seem to link him to the outdoors, whether it was experimental boat and model aircraft design, or gardening; his hydroponics garden grows an assortment of near perfect tomatoes.  As a lad during World War II in England, Ian attended the highly regarded Repton School. This was followed by a B.S. in 1956 and Ph.D. in 1959, both in chemistry, from the University of London. Ian came to the United States in 1960, but will always be remembered as a true English gentleman.    Ian is survived by Deborah, his wife of 48 years; three daughters, Mary, Margaret and Elizabeth, and seven grandchildren with one more on the way.  A “Final Farewell” is scheduled for Thursday, March 4, from 2 to 4 pm at Callaghan Mortuary Chapel, Livermore, Calif. Friends and family are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ian’s memory to Hope Hospice, of Dublin, Calif. |

Jack Joseph Fidler June 22, 1921 – Feb. 20, 2010 Long-time Alaskan Jack Joseph Fidler, 88, passed away Feb 20, 2010, after a long struggle with cancer.  He died peacefully surrounded by his family who lovingly cared for him in his final months. Jack was born in Butler Township, Mich., to Burr and Clara (Cummins) Fidler. In 1940, he graduated from Allen High School and immediately entered the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served five years with the 31st Fighter Group. He earned the rank of master sergeant in the 308th Squadron where he commanded an armament squad for Spitfires and P51 fighter planes.  During his years of service, he was stationed throughout England, North Africa, and Italy. Representing the enlisted men of the 31st Fighter Group, he once received an audience and blessing from Pope Pius XII. Upon his honorable discharge, Jack returned to Allen and in 1946 married his lifetime love, Jeanette Howell.  After starting as a stockboy in 1937, Jack co-owned and managed the Allen Hardware Co. from 1952-1970.  He served as the city mayor from 1951-1959, councilman from 1959-1967, and president of the Allen Telephone Co. from 1953-1969.  He was an active member of his community as a long-term member of the American Legion, Masons, and Knights of Pythias, holding many offices in these organizations throughout his lifetime. In 1972, Jack and Jeanette packed up their family and finally made their long awaited move from Allen to Anchorage. During his first 20 years in state, Jack was a dedicated employee at United Building Supplies.  As a passionate angler (he even slipped a fly rod into the trunk of their 1946 honeymoon vehicle!), he was frequently heard comparing Alaska to heaven. In over 35 years of Alaskan residency, Jack tested nearly every stream between Tangle Lakes and the Homer Spit. Jack used his retirement to fulfill his enthusiasm for reading, gardening, sports and his never ending love for fishing.  Jack devoured nearly every book ever written about WWII.  Though his desire to grow a vine-ripened tomato in his south Anchorage garden continued to elude him, he always enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys and endured many defeats to hear his favorite commentator, Harry Caray, cheer on the Cubs.  Always within his permitted limit, one winter he caught 509 of the 2,500 fish stocked in Jewell Lake. Jack is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jeanette (Howell) Fidler; son/daughter-in-law Gary Fidler and Marilyn Ogden of Scottsdale, Ariz.; granddaughter Sarah Fidler of New York City; and sister Lettie and Dave Dressel of Tempe, Ariz., Jack was preceded in death by his three brothers: Max, Charles, and Jim. Jack chose not to have a formal memorial service, but the next time you go fishing be sure to leave one for Grandpa Jack. For their around-the-clock support during his final weeks, please contribute to the Hospice of Anchorage (2612 E Northern Lights Blvd, Anchorage, AK 99508; www.hospiceofanchorage.org) in lieu of sending flowers to our family.
