Ethel Louise Hawkes Ethel Louise Hawkes, 81, former Litchfield resident, passed away Sunday, March 1, 2010, at the Pisgah Manor Nursing Home in Asheville, N.C., after a long goodbye. She was born in Litchfield to Jay Danforth and Orinda (Lazenby) Hawkes and grew up on her parents’ dairy farm in Litchfield. At a young age when unable to convince her mom to make “Johnny Cakes” after school, she taught herself how, and this fiercely independent spirit carried Ethel though her entire life.  Ethel wanted to travel and see the world. In 1980, after retirement from Michigan Bell where she was a Supervisor/Peg count Observer, she packed her belongings in a U-Haul and moved herself to Asheville, N.C., to begin a new life. She was active in political campaigns for State Representatives in Michigan and North Carolina and was President of the Litchfield Business and Professional Women’s Club in 1978-79. Ethel was responsible for the operation of the sound system for the First Presbyterian Church of Asheville and manned the controls of that system for many years. She was active on the Western North Carolina Presbyterian’s Hunger Action Task Force and later became an active member of the Groce United Methodist Church of Asheville. Ethel devoted her entire life to helping people and making their days brighter. In her working career she received numerous awards and customers took the time to write real letters to thank her for going beyond what was expected. Ethel’s last job was probably her favorite because she loved babies and enjoyed her time working in the infant department at JC Penney’s. She was frugal with her money and was, therefore, able to leave lasting gifts. Ethel, with her brother, Irving Hawkes, donated the Methodist Cross and Flames on the Litchfield United Methodist Church in their parents’ memory. She is survived by one niece, Cecelia (David) Evans, Litchfield; three nephews, James Lee (Susan) Hawkes, Litchfield, George (Carol) Hawkes, Litchfield, Randy Hawkes, Litchfield; many nieces and nephews and special neighbors; and North Carolina “family” Ronnie Presley and James Dennis. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Michael Baker-Streevy officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from noon until time of service Wednesday. Memorials are suggested to the Pisgah Manor Activities Fund, 95 Holcombe Cove Road, Candler, NC 28715.   |

“The black smoke has quit and I made the 300-foot pull for the last time. I have my tractor on the trailer and I'm on my way to be at peace with the Lord.” John Marc Neill, 55, of Tecumseh, Mich., passed away on March 10, 2010, at his home surrounded by his family. John fought the hard battle with cancer for three months right to the end. John was born in Tecumseh on Nov. 10, 1954, to Thomas “Tim” Neill and Agnes (Lechner) Neill. He graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1973. After graduation he went to work for L&I Leasing in Britton as a truck driver. He then drove truck for Tecumseh Products. In 1981, John and his brother Jim opened Neill’s Towing & Auto Repair, providing service to the area 365 days a year until his passing. John also owned Uncle John’s Snack Shop, serving hot dogs and other snacks around Lenawee County. John had a love of pulling tractors and owned “Pulled My Way.” This tractor was indeed special to him because his nephews Michael and Jacob had worked on it with him and accompanied him to many tractor pulls. Michael and Jacob stepped up to help their favorite Uncle operate Neill’s Towing as John waged his battle with cancer. John’s nieces were the dream of his heart, whether it was following them in their sports endeavors or family times together. John is survived by his mother, Agnes, of Tecumseh, and brother Tom (Sally) Neill of Adrian and brother James (Linda) Neill of Manitou Beach. In addition, he is survived by nephews Michael, Jacob and Jordan Neill of Adrian; nieces Shelby Neill of Manitou Beach and Holly (Rob) Griewahn of Adrian; and grandnieces Chloe and Lily Griewahn. Preceding John in death are his father, Thomas “Tim,” several aunts and uncles, and his maternal grandparents, Jacob and Anna Lechner of Toledo, Ohio. John will be missed by many close friends too numerous to mention here. But they know who they are. At John’s request, in lieu of flowers contributions to Hospice of Lenawee may be made. A Mass of the Christian Burial in celebration of John’s life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Tecumseh, with the Rev. Fr. Daniel Wheeler as celebrant. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery, Tecumseh. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 15, 2010, at the J.
