One of Emmet County’s longest-serving clerks, Irene Granger, passed away Monday, March 22, at Munson Medical Center. She was 75. Her son, Jeff Granger, of Kewadin, said his mom hadn’t been feeling well and was admitted to the hospital Sunday. She died at 3:30 a.m. of septic shock infection. Jeff and his brother, Jim, were with her. Her death came as a shock to the family and those who knew her in Emmet County. “Irene was a legend,” said current county clerk Gail Martin, who served for eight years as Granger’s deputy clerk. “She was incredibly intelligent and remembered every little number and detail. She gave her heart and soul to Emmet County. In fact, she rarely took a day off. I used to have to beg her to take vacation time.” Granger first hired in February 1978 as deputy clerk under clerk Harriet Kilborn. In 1980, she became the county clerk and served six elected terms until her retirement in 2004. The Newfoundland native moved to Alanson in 1977 with her late husband, Gerald, who was born and raised in Alanson. The couple had three children and eight grandchildren. Granger’s funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24 at the Sacred Heart Church, 143 Charles St., Elk Rapids. Visitation with the family will take place at 10 a.m., and a luncheon will follow the funeral service. |

Stanley Earl Gibbard, son of George and Vivian Gibbard, passed away Monday evening, March 22, 2010, in the comfort of his home. Surrounded by all his family Stanley embarked on his journey leaving behind his struggle with cancer. Stan was born Dec. 28, 1927, in his family’s Pleasant Valley farmhouse located in Antrim County, Mich. Stanley served with pride in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in 182nd Airborne from 1945 to 1949. Returning to Antrim County Stan soon married Jackie Rogers and applied for recruit training in the Michigan State Police. Stan flourished in his career as a State Trooper while he and Jackie raised five kids — Bruce, Deb, Don, Dave and Gary. Longing to settle in their transient “trooper life” Stan and Jackie chose Clinton as their home and remained here from 1963 to present. Stan contributed countless hours of service in the Clinton Rotary and United Methodist Church while establishing himself as a compassionate law enforcer at the local State Police post. After 25 years of service protecting Lenawee and environs Stan became a realtor encountering all who might be interested in settling in his community. Stan had an innate understanding of people and how to communicate. Stan’s legendary antics amongst his friends here remain as touchstones for many a fond memory. He was loved in his community and returned that sentiment to all whom he met in his many adventures outside of Clinton. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Jackie; brother, Joe; sons, Bruce, Don, Dave and Gary; his daughter, Deb; daughters-in-law, Andrea, Peg and Janis; son-in-law, Jack; grandkids, Tressa, Anna, Kyle and Ellis. He will be sorely missed by his community who embraced Stan throughout his years. God bless “Stan the Man.”  A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, March 26, at the Clinton United Methodist Church, 10990 Tecumseh-Clinton Road Clinton. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Arbor Hospice, 40500 Ann Arbor Road, Ste 102, Plymouth, MI 48170 or “Friends of the Jordan,” P.O. Box 412, East Jordan, MI 49727. |

TRAVERSE CITY — Eva M. Veres, 77, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010, with her loving family by her side. Eva was born Sept. 5, 1932, in Budapest, Hungary, to the late John and Anna (Ozvatics) Varga. She married her loving husband, Steve nearly 60 years ago on Sept. 30, 1950. Together with their daughter, Eva, they heroically escaped communism in their native country during the 1956 Hungarian Uprising to embrace the freedoms of all Americans here in the United States. Eva was an inspector at Ford Motor Company at the Rawsonville Plant in Ypsilanti for 20 years. She was a life member of the Hungarian-American Cultural Center in Taylor. Everyone who knew Eva would attest to her flair for cooking and even more so, baking. Once you sampled Eva's pastries, there was nothing to compare. She had an innate talent that could not be taught. Surely the Lord will be eating well in Heaven now that she is with Him. Eva's interests included listening to music, pontooning, going to the beach with Apa, chatting on the phone with friends and playing cards. Above all, she was a loyal Red Wing Fan, a true "Wing Nut".Eva was very proud of her home and garden in Traverse City as well as her condo in Bradenton, Fla. She took such great care that family, friends and neighbors admired the fruits of her endeavors. Eva will forever be in the hearts of those she leaves behind. Surviving Eva is her family, husband of 59 years, Steve "Apa"; daughter, Eva (Thomas) Pointe of Traverse City; son, Steve Veres Jr. of Belleville; two sisters, Marta (Alex) Mohacsi of Ypsilanti and Ida (Gyula) Risz of Budapest, Hungary.A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with visitation held one hour prior.
