Joan M. Smith, 87, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday morning, March 17, 2010, at Thurston Woods Village of Sturgis. She was born Aug. 10, 1922, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late Fred and Cora (Burmeister) Hubner. Joan was a life long resident of Sturgis and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1940. On June 22, 1979, she married Donald Smith at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. She retired from the City following over 20 years as secretary to the City Manager. Joan was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis where for several years she and Don served on the money counting committee and at one time she served as the church secretary. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening both vegetables and flowers and crocheting. Joan truly dedicated to her husband and family and was happiest when she was surrounded by each one of them. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband, Don; one daughter, Kristen Whitesell of Sturgis; two sons,  Karl (Mary) Littman of Sturgis and Ronald (Darlene) Littman of San Antonio, Texas; four grandchildren, Kristy Borji, Erika Littman, Megan Zagon and Miranda Whitesell; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Helzel of Franklin, NC and Shirley Young of Plantation, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Coral Meyers; and two brothers, Frederick Hubner Jr. and Loren Hubner. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Joan M. Smith will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2010, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Rev. Calvin Kolzow will officiate. Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel of Sturgis is handling the arrangements. Former Bronson resident Rachael R. Penix, 87, of Glendale, Ariz., passed away on Friday, March 12, at the Hospice of the Valley Sun City PCU in Peoria, Ariz.  A visitation and Catholic prayer service were held on Thursday, March 18 at Heritage Funeral Chapel in Peoria, Ariz. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. on Wednesday, April 7, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of the Valley Sun City PCU. |

KNEISEL, VERNICE LORRAINE; age 98; passed away peacefully on March 17, 2010, with the assistance of Seasons Hospice at Independence Village, White Lake, MI. Vernice was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond (Jake) Kneisel; sister, Virginia Theeringer; parents, Harry Leroy and Grace Gertrude Allen; granddaughter, Kimberley Terrell; and great grandson, Christopher Holsinger. She is survived by her son, Charles (Karen) Kneisel and daughter, Christine McGillis of Urbandale, IA; three grandchildren Aimee (Jeremy) Plesco, Carl Kneisel and Michael McGillis; one great granddaughter, Kelsey Terrell and a niece and nephew with families in California. Mrs. Kneisel was born June 8, 1911 in Urbandale, a small Community near Battle Creek, MI. She held a life-time teachers certificate and taught many years in the Pontiac and Waterford School systems, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Areme Chapter of Eastern Star in Pontiac and a member of Bethel United Church of Christ. |

Wilda E. Metzger, 88, of Columbia City, Ind., and formerly of North Manchester, Ind., died March 17, 2010, at her home. She was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Huntington, Ind., a daughter to  August F. and Elizabeth (Kocher) Poehler. On Sept. 29, 1946, she married Carl E. Metzger. He survives. Also surviving are a son, Lee W. Metzger of LaGrange, Ind., and one sister, Wilma M. Pinckley of Claremount, Calif. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald C. Poehler and five sisters,  Pauline L.C. Auer, Evelyn A. Ernst, Dorothy E. Brown, Nina and Melinda Poehler. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Columbia City, Ind. Relatives and friends may call one hour prior to the service which begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday at McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114, North Manchester, Ind. Pastor Jerrold Nichols will officiate.
