She spent her early years in Palmyra,  and later years in Toledo and Adrian. She was a lifetime member of the Adrian First Baptist Church. She graduated from Chesterfield High School, Ohio, in 1938, after which she moved to Toledo and first worked in the Lucas County Library. She has three grandchildren, Seth, Sarah and Mark Johnston, and several great grandchildren, including “borrowed” ones from the Corbett and Matthew Day family. After the War she moved back to Michigan and joined the Lenawee County Clerk’s Office in May 1955, retiring as Lenawee County Clerk on Dec. 31, 1985. During her tenure she published the State of Michigan County Clerk Magazine and served on many state committees. She was especially pleased with the contest she ran that resulted in our present Lenawee County flag. This procedure was copied by many more of the state’s counties. She was an avid golfer, bridge player and volunteer — her favorites being Daybreak Adult Day Services and playing for sing-a-longs at the various senior centers. She was an active member of the Lenawee Council on Aging, serving as chair several years. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; her parents; sisters, D. Marie Kahle and E. ROBERT M. JELENIC NEW HAVEN Robert M. Jelenic, age 58, former chairman and chief executive officer of Journal Register Company, the publisher of the New Haven Register, died Wednesday night in Pennsylvania after a long bout with cancer. Jelenic, 58, was the architect and driving force behind JRC before stepping down in November 2007 after 20 years with the Yardley, Pa.-based corporation. My 32 years in the newspaper industry have been extremely gratifying and rewarding, Jelenic said at the time of his resignation. He is survived by his wife, Joy, of New Hope, Pa.; parents, Tom and Dana Jelenic, and sister, Marianne Jelenic, all of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada; son, Lee Jelenic, his wife, Bethany, and their son, Chase, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; and daughter, Laine Nakfoor, and her husband, Jeremiah, of Los Angeles. Jelenic s three-plus decades of newspaper experience included 12 years with the Toronto Sun Publishing Group. Jelenic, an all-around good athlete known for his vivid personality, grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and graduated from Laurentian University in Sudbury with an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree. Jelenic starred as a quarterback for the Laurentian University football team in 1968 and 1969, and played semi-pro football for the Sudbury Spartans in 1970 and 1971. The Journal Register Company was established in 1990, taking on newspapers from Ralph Ingersoll II s empire. During the 1980s, Ingersoll had assembled a family of newspapers through his company, Ingersoll Publications Co. One of Ingersoll s last acquisitions was the Register, which has been published since 1755. It is JRC s flagship newspaper. In July 1990, investment firm E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co., which was Ingersoll s partner and financier, bought him out of the U.S. newspaper market, with Ingersoll gaining ownership of Warburg, Pincus s European newspaper properties. Jelenic, who was president of the U.S. newspaper companies at Ingersoll Publications, became CEO of the newly incorporated Journal Register Company. After JRC went public in 1997, Warburg, Pincus remained a majority shareholder with a 72 percent ownership interest. When the JRC was formed in 1990, it already owned newspapers in Philadelphia, Ohio, St. Louis, central New England, and the Capital-Saratoga region of New York, in addition to the Register. For the next decade, JRC would acquire more publications in those regions as part of its geographic clustering strategy, through which the company hoped to enjoy operating synergies. Under Jelenic s stewardship, Journal Register Company grew from a newspaper publisher to a multimedia corporation that reaches 472,000 subscribers with its daily circulation. It owns 22 daily newspapers, including the Register, Connecticut s second-largest daily and Sunday newspaper, and The Oakland Press, the third-largest daily in metro Detroit. With 300 non-daily publications owned by the company, over 5.3 million people get their news and sports from JRC. The company s publications are located in six strategically clustered geographic areas: Greater Philadelphia, Michigan, Connecticut, Greater Cleveland, and in New York State s Capital-Saratoga and Mid-Hudson regions. Furthermore, multimedia avenues allow the news to be delivered through more than 230 newspaper and specialty Web sites. JRC also manages a number of niche market publications and three commercial printing operations. A viewing will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Joseph A. Fluehr III Funeral Home in Richboro, Pa. Services will be held Tuesday morning beginning with a viewing at 10 a.m. followed by a service at 11 a.m. at St. John s Methodist Church in Ivyland, Pa. Roland E. 'Gene' Herbener

Thursday, December 11, 2008 5:19 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Roland E. “Gene” Herbener, Kalamazoo, formerly of Hillsdale, died Dec. 6, 2008, in Portage. Gene was born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 5, 1923 to Harry N. Herbener and Helen (Miller) Herbener. He attended public schools in Newark, Del., graduating from high school in 1940. Prior to his entry into the Army of the United States in June 1943, he studied engineering for 2 1/2 years at the University of Delaware. He was particularly proud of his Army unit, the 475th Military Police Escort Guard Company, which sailed across the Atlantic Ocean on three round trips during the war bringing back German prisoners-of-war to the States. He wrote of these “non-adventures” in a book that appears on the Internet. After his retirement, he arranged a number of reunions of the company. After the war he completed a B.S. degree in chemistry and earned a teaching certificate at Western Michigan University under the G.I. Bill. He had married Thelma Jean VandenBerg of Kalamazoo while in the service and at the time of his Honorable Discharge from the Army had one son, Dr. Jon Herbener, a Pediatrician. The Herbeners had another son, Kurt Herbener, deceased in 1992, and a daughter, Beth Hoffman, who preceded him in death on Dec. 1, 2008. In addition to Jon, one daughter survives, Jane Herbener of Portage. Other survivors include a daughter-in-law, Seibra (Mrs. Jon) (Salisbury) Herbener and a granddaughter, Lynne (Mrs. Jake) Neukom of Hillsdale and a grandson, Ted Hoffman in New Jersey, and three great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Holly, died in 1992. Mr. Herbener taught mathematics and science at Fennville (Mich.) High School for three years before returning to the University of Delaware to earn a M.S. in Organic Chemistry using the balance of his G.I. Bill educational eligibility. He returned to Fennville for a fourth year. He taught in Fennville and Trenton (Mich.) high schools for a total of 12 years. During this time in the summers he did further graduate work funded by the National Science Foundation this culminating in an M.S.T. in Chemistry Teaching from the University of New Hampshire in 1962. Professor Herbener entered the ranks of college teachers in the fall of 1961 at Hillsdale College (Mich) where he was chairman of the chemistry department for 31 years. He pursued research in nitrogen heterocycles as a part of pre-doctoral studies in Chemistry at Ohio University during the 1960s. In addition to his love for Organic Chemistry, in the late ‘60s he became interested in computers and their application to the teaching of Chemistry. Commencing in the ‘70s he taught a beginning class in programming, at first in BASIC, later in FORTRAN. This he often referred to as “computing for poets” since it permitted him to teach students from fields other than those in the sciences. He retired from Hillsdale College as Professor Emeritus of Chemistry in 1992. After his retirement Mr. and Mrs. Herbener flew to England, France and Germany. Commencing in 1993 they took several trips to visit his cousins in Germany. Over the duration of three years they took cruises on the Rhine, Mosel and Danube Rivers. Mrs. Herbener preceded her husband in death in 1997 after more than 52 years of marriage. After retirement, Mr. Herbener was President of the Mitchell Library Board and later an active member of the Hillsdale Community Library Board. He also pursued his interests in digital photography, genealogy and military history. Mr. Herbener has been cremated and his ashes, with military honors, will join those of his wife in Fort Custer National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Hillsdale Community Library.
