ARTHUR FRANK WHEELER MARLETTE Arthur Frank Wheeler, age 85, of Marlette, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008 at Sanilac County Medical Care Facility in Sandusky, Michigan. He was born January 24, 1923 in Marlette, Michigan the son of the late Frank and Elizabeth (Schneider) Wheeler. He was a lifelong area resident and farmer. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during WWII. Arthur married Loanne E. Scholz on November 22, 1951 in Marlette, she died on June 18, 2005. He is survived by one daughter; Deborah & (Harley) Rich of Marlette, three sons;David & (Cindy) Wheeler of Caro, Daniel & (Tanya) Wheeler of Grand Blanc and Douglas Wheeler of Marlette, one brother;Robert Wheeler of Marlette, sister-in-law; Mary Wheeler of Marlette, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Wheeler. Cremation has taken place at the Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Ann (Polentz) Zuzich, age 90, of Holland, died Sunday, January 11, 2009. She lived at Oak Crest Manor in Holland, MI. Ann was an Associate Professor at Wayne State School of Nursing; served as a former President of the Michigan Nurses Association, Citizens for Better Care and ARC/Michigan. She was an active member and volunteer at the National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak, MI. She had a passion for individuals with developmental disabilities that led to advocacy at the state and national levels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1983 and a son, Francis, in 1965. She is survived by her children; Paul and Mary Zuzich of Tempe, AZ, Marge and Carey Bakker of Holland and Michael Zuzich of Romeo, MI; grandchildren, Michael Zuzich and Maria (Zuzich) Ries; a great grandson, Chase Ries; and a sister-in-law, Vera and John Kerastas of Farmington Hills, MI. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, January 14, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 171 W 13th St., Holland, with Fr. Fred Hoesli officiating. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, MI. Visiting hours are scheduled for 5-7pm on Tuesday with Rosary Prayers at 6:00pm at the church. Audrey McFarland-Riggs, age 51 of North Adams passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. She was born on June 28, 1957, in Detroit, to William R. and Dorothy C. (Jennings) McFarland. She married Garry E. Riggs on Dec. 30, 2006, in Homer, and he survives. Audrey lived her early life in Taylor, Mich., then at age 15 she moved to Onsted. She attended Eureka Heights Schools in Taylor and then she graduated from Onsted High School in 1975. Audrey worked for Penrickton Center for Blind Children for 13 years. She then worked for Helping Hands in Jackson, then for Foote Hospital in Jackson. She was then employed at Hillsdale Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale for the past year. She enjoyed raising her children, enjoyed flowers and bird watching. Surviving, besides her husband, Garry, are three sons, Sami Salameh of Dearborn, Ibrahim Salameh of North Adams, Garry Riggs, Jr. of Adrian; three daughters, Nadia Salameh of North Adams, Angela Salameh of North Adams, Merissa Riggs of Hillsdale; four grandchildren, Garry Riggs III, Alex Lopez, Angel Riggs, Harmony Riggs; her parents, William and Dorothy McFarland of North Adams; one brother, Dale W. (Linda) McFarland of New Boston; two nieces, Shirley Anne and Amanda McFarland. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison, with Pastor Rob Corbin officiating. BERNARD GERALD "JERRY" MUXLOW BROWN CITY Bernard Gerald "Jerry" Muxlow, age 68, of Brown City died Saturday, December 27, 2008. He was born August 3, 1940 in Marlette to the late Bernard J. and Hazel Alta (Clink) Muxlow. Jerry graduated from Brown City High School Class of 1958 and on June 23, 1962 married Joanne Batchelor at the Brown City Missionary Church. Jerry was a farmer for many years but had most recently retired as a custodian from the St. Clair County Sheriff Dept. He was a life long member of the Brown City Missionary Church. He is survived by his wife, Joanne of 46 years, daughter; Colleen (Kevin) Burke, two grandchildren; Jacob and Jordyn Burke, sister; Roxanne (Gary) Dean, brother; Craig (Donna Mann) Muxlow and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Brown City Missionary Church with Rev. Richard Fleddarjohann officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Charles James Baker Dryden Charles James Baker, 90, of Dryden, passed away Wednesday (January 7, 2009) at Lapeer County Extended Care Facility. He was born May 16, 1918, in Leonard, the son of Frank and Zaidee (Haynes) Baker. He married Virginia Wood on June 4, 1946 in Kawkawlin, Mich. Mr. Baker graduated from Dryden High School prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served in Japan during World War II. He was a lifetime farmer and worked for National Twist Drill for 21 years before retiring. He was a member of Dryden Wesleyan Church. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp of Burton, formerly of Hillsdale passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 31, 1978 in Jackson the son of his father, Thomas Gochanour; his mother, Brenda (Bowditch) Gumpp and his second father, Gerold “Gary” Gumpp. He is survived by his mother, Brenda Gumpp and her companion, Earl Barker of Grand Blanc; his father, Thomas Gochanour of Hillsdale; grandparents, Frank and Roberta Day of Osseo; two half-sisters, Jennifer Wood and Heidi Gochanour; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his second father, Gary Gumpp and his grandmother, Florence Gumpp. Chuck attended Hillsdale High School and received his G.E.D. He continued his education at Western Michigan University and graduated on Dec. 11, 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management and a minor in Economics. He worked as a manager at Rite Aid in Almont and he was a member of the Eagles Lodge. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Charles William “Chuck” Gumpp will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 2 p.m. Saturday. Clarence L. Osentoski 1934-2008 Clarence L. Osentoski, 74, Caseville, died Friday, January 2, 2009 at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills after a long battle with cancer. He was born June 1, 1934 in Ubly to the late Louis and Anna (Pawlowski) Osentoski. On October 24, 1953, Clarence married Donna J. Popour of Harbor Beach at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church. After marrying her, he attended a railroad engineering school in Minnesota and worked as the station manager at the Wixom Depot. He graduated from Ubly High School in 1952 In 1954 he returned to Huron County to open Osentoski Farm Equipment in Harbor Beach with his father. As the business grew to include dealerships in Bad Axe and Pigeon, Clarence moved his family to Caseville in 1968. This family owned business is now run by the third generation of the Osentoski family. He was active throughout Huron County. Clarence had been the Chairman of the Huron County Road Commission, a member at Scenic Golf and CountryClub and St. Roch Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing cards, sports and traveling. He is survived by his wife, Donna; children, Donald (Lana), Pigeon, Timothy (Sharon), Bad Axe, Karen, Caseville, Thomas (Kari), Bay City, Diane Bass, Clarkston, Richard, Caseville and Daniel (Rose), Caseville; 17 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and sisters, Betty Hill, Ariz. and Doris (Charles) Crowl, Warren. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Steven and grandson, Erik. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at St. Roch Catholic Church with Fr. She was born March 11, 1933 in Sayersville, Ky. the daughter of Arthur and Betty (Barnett) Hurley. She married Leonard Bigelow, Sr. on April 7, 1950 and he survives. Besides her loving husband of 58 years, Creta is also survived by her children, Beverly (Quincy) Osborne of Pulaski Township, Leonard W., Jr. (Lynn) Bigelow of Highland, Ervin (Karen) Bigelow of Temple, Texas, Nancy (Dana) Poynter of Michigan Center, Raymond (Rose) Bigelow of Breckinridge, Gloria Miller of Concord; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sister, Joann Hurley. Creta enjoyed hunting with her husband, sewing, crossword puzzles and her family. She was preceded in death by her son Bruce Bigelow in 1991, one brother and two sisters. She was born June 15, 1947 in Detroit, daughter of the late Henry W. and Martha M. (Detgen) Lindley. She and Grant S. Cass, Sr. were married on June 8, 1968 at St. John Lutheran Church, Port Sanilac. He died July 18, 2002. Mrs. Cass was a member of St. John Lutheran Church. She was born in Pigeon on July 23, 1951, the daughter of Jack H. Sr. and Marilyn (Jurgess) Paul. Diana had a kind and gentle heart. She loved life and laughed a lot. She enjoyed being a Girl Scout, going outdoors to the woods and swimming. She liked school, drawing, coloring, puzzles and her dolls. She especially enjoyed Christmas and her birthdays, traveling with her parents, visiting at Grandma Doyle's, eating brown sugar and butter sandwiches and being called "Lucy." She loved her Lord Jesus. She is survived by her father, Jack H. Paul, Sr., Cottonwood, Ariz.; two sisters, Pattie (Jim) Hammett, John Day, Ore. and Mary (Rick) Hinson, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Clare (Amy) Paul, Dayton, Ohio and Jack (Wendy) Paul, Lake Orion and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home in Pigeon, with Rev. Michael T. Sawicki officiating. Ioane Sigarara as celebrant.  Private interment will take place at a later date at Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy. Doris “Dody” Nykerk, age 85, of Holland, died Friday January 9, 2009, at Holland Community Hospital.  Dody was born July 11, 1923 in Holland and was a lifelong resident.  She had been employed for 25 years as the secretary to the principal at West Ottawa High School, retiring in 1985. Dody was a member of the First Reformed church of Holland and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed watching her family play league softball, knitting and crocheting and traveling with her family. She is survived by daughters, Cheryl “Cherie” and Cornie Versendaal of Holland and Pat and Bill Henson of Holland, grand children, Steve Garvelink, Jodi and Steve Oudendyk, Kirk and Lanelle Garvelink, Jeff Henson, and Jamie and Blaine Rockhold, twelve great grand children, Mike (Angela) DeWitt, Courtney, Ryan, Chelsea, Amanda and Connor Garvelink, Taylor and Delaney Overman, Jessilyn and Makynlie Rockhold, Whitney, and Kara Saylor and one great great grandchild, Christian DeWitt, sisters, Irene and Lyle Prichard of Holland and Myra and Doug Arnold of Holland, several nieces and nephews.  Dody was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Chester L. Doris was born on March 10, 1911, in Madison Township, the daughter of Alex and Flora (Alcock) Birchfield. She was married on Dec. 12, 1972, to Mearl Chappel of Lansing. He preceded her in death in 2000. She was a life member of the Eastern Star Arbutus Chapter, the Business Woman Association, and the Hairdresser’s Association of Lansing. She also was a member of the Mt. Hope Methodist Church of Lansing. Doris and Mearl spent many of their winters in Florida. Surviving is one sister, Beatrice Olive Luce of Blissfield; four stepchildren, Terry (Diane) Chappel, Robert Chappel, Linda Bowen and Yuvonne Hoag, all of Lansing; five nephews, Charles (Jeanne) Birchfield, William Birchfield, John Snarski, Gene (Barbara) Luce and Jan (Carol) Luce; three nieces, Barbara (Bud) DeSander, Wanda Corder and Susan Los Calzo; and many grand and great grand nieces and nephews. Along with her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Wm. Levi Birchfield, Dewey Birchfield and Herbert Birchfield; and sisters, Mable Helen Las Calzo and Florence Edna Snarski. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield, with the Rev. Gene Luce officiating. Burial will follow at Hunt Cemetery in Madison Township. Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

He was born March 12, 1919 at home in Evergreen Township to William and Mary (McComb) Bullock. He married Emma Edith Kitchin June 30, 1942 in Emma's parents home in Evergreen Township. Ernest was a crop and dairy farmer. He worked for a few years for Active Industries in Elkton and for Gerden Industries in Marlette. Ernest retired as a carpenter working commercial construction after about ten years. He was a member of Mizpah Missionary Church for many years. Ernest enjoyed rabbit hunting in his younger years and he enjoyed woodworking. Ernest is survived by his wife; Emma, children; Donald (Virginia) Bullock of Decker, David (Penny) Bullock of Saginaw, Dale (Fay) Bullock of Sandusky, Diane K. Elisabeth C. Smoljo, age 77 of Centreville, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Three Rivers Health.  She was born in Munich, Germany on May 5, 1931, the daughter of Joseph and Elsa (Hofbauer) Lederer.  She came to the United States in 1951, settling in Chicago.  It was there that she met and married Joseph Smoljo on Aug. 11, 1956.  Elisabeth was a bookkeeper and had worked for U.S. Steel, Sears-Roebuck, and Darling Enterprises.  She and her husband retired to Centreville in 1979.  Here she worked briefly for Denton Mills and Village Market, and attended St. Clare Catholic Church.  She was an avid football fan.  She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, and bird-watching. Elisabeth is survived by her husband, Joseph Smoljo of Centreville;  one son, Joseph Smoljo, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Seymour, Ind.;  two grandchildren, Ashley Smoljo of Seymour, Ind., and Chad Jordan and his wife, Monica of Sturgis;  one nephew, Bryan Smoljo and wife, Claudia of Joliet, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers.  Cremation has been conducted.  A memorial funeral mass will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Three Rivers with Rev. Eunice Fern Fraylick, age 90, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Sunday evening Jan. 11, 2009, at Thurston Woods Villa in Sturgis. She was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Florence Township, Mich., a daughter of the late Johnny Raymond and Abigail Arzilla (Allen) White. Eunice had resided in Sturgis since 1955, coming from Constantine. On May 13, 1941, she married Ralph Leon Fraylick in Sturgis. They enjoyed 50 years of marriage together until his death on Dec. 15, 1993. Eunice was a homemaker and had also worked as a beautician. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis where for many years she taught Sunday school. She enjoyed volunteering her time at her church and also at the Sturgis Hospital. Eunice loved books, reading and crafts. She was always making lots of goodies for her children and grandchildren. Surviving are: four daughters, Karen Stukey of Sturgis, Paula (Paul) Merrifield of Fairbanks, Alaska, Sherry (John) King of Rochester Hills and Pamela (Jack) Armstrong of Three Rivers; a son, Larry Fraylick of Sturgis; 11 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, and two step-great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Gladys Bohm of Centreville; a brother, Junior (Marie) White of Three Rivers; a sister-in-law, Ellen White of Sturgis; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Charles White and Carl White; a granddaughter, Cindy Merrifield; and son-in-law, Melvin Stukey. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Francis  W.  Yockey, age 88, of Bronson, Mich., died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at the Sturgis Hospital. He was born May 5, 1920, in Jamestown, Ind., a son of Forba Fern and Wava (Straw) Yockey.  On April 4, 1045, he married Wannetta Stumpf  in Angola, Ind.  Francis was a hired farm hand for the Carpenter, the Wall and the Schafer families before owning his own farm in Southern Branch County.  He had also worked for the former Darling Company and retired from Grumman-Olson in Sturgis in May 1985. He enjoyed fishing and working in his spare time and attended the First Baptist Church of Bronson. Surviving are: his wife, Wannetta and his sister, Lucille Kirkpatrick of Marion, Ind.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Orville Yockey and his sister, Lenora Patterson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church of Bronson with Pastor John Fields officiating. Friends may call at the First Baptist Church, beginning at noon Saturday. She loved to garden and travel, particularly to her and her husband Lloyd’s house up north. Freida was born July 4, 1921, in Cookeville, Tenn., the daughter of J.C. and Effie (Ellis) Bean. She graduated from high school in Tennessee in 1939 and moved to Owosso in 1941. On Sept. 19, 1942, she married Lloyd Powlison in Durand. She was very active in volunteering her time to work for the March of Dimes, the Cancer Crusade, the United Way and for the American Red Cross, working in the blood program. She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. She is survived by  her husband, Lloyd; sons, Roger (Janenne) Powlison of The Villages, Fla., and Dennis (Susie) Powlison of Adrian; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Nancy; a granddaughter, two brothers and a sister. Funeral services took place Saturday, Jan. 10, at Nelson-House Funeral Home, Owosso, with Pastor Susan Kingsley officiating. Helen was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Jasper, Mich., to Lewis and Ellis (Richison) Baugh. She married John W. Summers on Oct. 12, 1940, in Wauseon, Ohio. He preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 1983. Helen has lived in the Branch County area for many years. She was an attendant nurse at the Coldwater Regional Center for 18 years, retiring in 1982. Mrs. Summers was an active member of the Coldwater First Baptist Church and the Good Sam Travel Trailer Club. She loved sewing and was an avid quilter, participating in the quilting Club at the Senior Center. She enjoyed the outdoors; camping and fishing, but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, John, Helen was preceded in death by her son, David Summers; her daughter, Emma Louise Summers; her granddaughter, Michalla Kelley; sisters and brother, Hazel “Tootie” Baugh, Richard Baugh, Ruth Lee, Marjorie Baugh, and her son-in-law, Sam Kollmorgen. Mr. Reason was a self-employed farmer, truck driver and handyman. Born April 22, 1939 in Oxford, Mich., he was the son of C.B. and Bea (Thompson) Reason. James is survived by his daughter, Terri and husband Jay Zigler of Bryan, Ohio; sons, Patrick and wife Cindy Reason of Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Reason of Rogersville, Mo., Mark and wife Stephanie Reason of Columbus, Ohio, and Marty Reason of Springfield, Mo., eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was born May 29, 1940, in Sturgis, a son of the late Gus and Nellie (Romanosky) Pappas. John was a lifelong Sturgis resident. On July 1, 1967, he married Judith Waite in Bronson, Mich. Following 35 years of dedicated employment he retired from Sutton Tool in Sturgis when the company closed. He had also been employed by Mechafinish and the Sturgis Police Department. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a true outdoorsman. He had a passion for hunting and fishing and was a longtime member of the St. Joseph County Conservation Club. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Judith; two daughters, Renee Fitzgerald of Kentwood and Nicole (Michael) Stroster of Kentwood; four granddaughters, Jordan, Allison, Paige and Ella. The family will receive friends from 1-8 p.m. today at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Leah M. Smith 1928-2008 Leah Mae Smith, 80, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday January 4, 2009 at the Lakeview Extended Care and Rehab Center of the Harbor Beach Community Hospital. She was born on February 3, 1928 in Marine City, the daughter of the late Andrew and Addie (Densmore) Anderson. She was united in marriage to Harold Alton Smith on May 27, 1950 in Marine City, with Harold's father, Rev. Everett Alton Smith officiating. Together Harold and Leah operated the Ben Franklin Store in Imlay City and the Harbor Beach Variety Store for over 25 years. Harold preceded her in death on August 30, 1996. Leah was a member of the United Methodist Church in Harbor Beach, United Methodist Women, the Harbor Beach Chamber of Commerce and sang in the Harbor Beach Community Choir. She enjoyed her Wednesday night card games, and others in between, cooking and camping at Sand Lake. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, four brothers and one grandson. Lola was a member of and faithfully attended Central Wesleyan Church in Jackson. Lola is survived by one daughter, Karen Elaine Stevens-Scheu of Princeton, N.C.; one son, Ralph Virgil (Brenda) Leacox of Jackson; one sister, Wilma Jean Brockway (James) Marvin of Adrian; nine grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Loren Theodore Leeper, age 95, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Sunday evening, Jan. 11, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. He was born March 31, 1913, in Comstock, Mich., a son of the late John Alexander and Jessie (Tyler) Leeper. Loren had resided most of his life in the Sturgis area. On Jan. 4, 1947, he married Pansy Bernice Stevens at the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene parsonage. She died August 28, 1988. He had been employed as a pipe bender with Formed Tubes. He had did farm work, well drilling, butchering, wood cutting, raised worms for bait companies, operated a truck garden for several years and was a rodeo cowboy. He had attended the Church of the Nazarene, Fish Lake Bible Church and the New Hope Church. While working at Formed Tubes he served as union steward. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and time spent with his family. His family will forever remember his Saturday morning pancake breakfasts. Surviving are: two daughters, Genetta Baldwin of Sturgis and Rose Locke of Three Rivers; one son, Kelvin Leeper of Battle Creek; four grandchildren, Lucaus Locke, Abigail Hoyt, Skye Bogucki and Shannon Baldwin; two stepgrandchildren, Roxanne Graves and Crystal Carver; two great-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Glenn Valentine Leeper Sr. of Port Charlotte, Fla.; and James Gordon Leeper of Flat River, Mo., a sister, Irene Warthall of Hillsboro, N. M.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one half sister. In 1979, he married Jean Lane in Las Vegas, Nev. He had been employed as a county policeman in Berrien Springs, was a truck driver for Sturgis Iron & Metal, and retired from Med-Tec in White Pigeon. Lyle enjoyed hunting, fixing lawn mowers, going to auctions, and was the neighborhood handyman. MYRTLE CATHERINE MERRIMAN DECKERVILLE Myrtle Catherine Merriman, age 88, of Deckerville, died Sunday, January 4, 2009 in Autumnwood of Deckerville. She was born December 5, 1919 in Harbor Beach, the daughter of the late Maxwell and Grace (See) Powers. Her family moved to McGregor, MI., and ran the Powers Hardware Store for many years. She graduated from Deckerville High School in 1938. She then attended the Business College of Port Huron. On February 1, 1941 she married Frank Merriman in Deckerville. Together they operated a Holstein dairy farm in Deckerville on land where Frank was born. Their farm was designated a centennial farm in 1992. Myrtle and Frank were married 66 years. He preceded her in death on October 20, 2007. Myrtle was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Deckerville, and a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, computers, and especially being the family historian and corresponding with many friendsand extended family members throughout the years. She mastered the computer at age 82 and was an avid e-mailer. Her kindness, cards, and generosity touched everyone she met. Myrtle's cooking was legendary, especially her pies. She and her husband took in family, friends, and exchange students over the years. She was much loved by all and will be very much missed. Myrtle is survived by her only child; Phillip, his wife; Diane (Burns Cameron) and her step-grandson; Scott T. Cameron. Also, surviving are her sisters-in-law; Ida Merriman Wagner and Margaret Sweet Merriman, her brother-in-law; Willis "Bill" (Ilene) Merriman and many nieces and nephews. Mary Sarna 

Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery., Arrangements were handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly.


 


 

Mazie Lazar Brown City/ North Branch Mazie Lazar, 83, of Brown City/North Branch passed away Thursday (January 8, 2009) at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Mazie was born May 5, 1925, in North Branch, the daughter of Clyde and Edna (Cliff) Fishell. She grew up in North Branch. She married George Lazar on November 15, 1943. Mazie was a farmer before becoming a school bus driver for the North Branch School District from 1968-1986. She really enjoyed driving bus. Mazie had many hobbies, including sewing, quilting needlepoint, cooking, flower gardening and mowing her lawn. Mildred Tenckinck age 91 of Holland died Friday, January 9, 2009. Mildred was born in Holland, graduated from Holland High School, and was a lifelong resident of the area. She was a member of the North Holland Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School and did Wednesday night Pioneer Club. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Henry in 1987 and a daughter-in-law Brenda Tenckinck in 2007. She is survived by her children — Rev. Kenneth and Arlene Tenckinck of Warwick, NY, Delbert Tenckinck of Holland, and Pat and Charlie Walker of Holland; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law- Evelyn Brower of Holland and Marian DeHaan of Holland; nephews, nieces, and cousins. Age 65 of Warren, MI. Passed away peacefully on January 7, 2009 surrounded by family members after a courageous battle with kidney cancer. She is survived by her loving husband of 47 years, Douglas Nims. Paul Thomas Bildzok, Jr., was born August 4, 1960, in Concord, Mass., the son of Paul Thomas and Patricia Bildzok, Sr. Paul was a graduate of Almont High School, class of 1978. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science from Michigan State University in 1982. He had worked for IBM from 1982 to 2004 in Kingston, N.Y., and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., as a computer programmer. While in college, he worked for Texas Instruments and Sperry Rand during the summers. Dick was an avid pool player and won many trophies and made many good friends. Roland J. Cross, 74, of Allen, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 16, 1934 in Hanover to Clemary and Odessa Irene (Strait) Cross. He was first married to Donna Buelow and she preceded him in death. He married Alma Powell Sept. 22, 1979 and she survives. Roland was a former employee at Walker Manufacturing in Jackson. He drove milk truck for several years. He started a lime business in 1962 and also did excavation work. Roland retired from farming in 1997. Surviving besides his wife Alma are four children, twins, Roxanna Munsell of Portsmouth, Va. and Roland D. (Martha) Cross of California, Tamara n(George) Martin of Portsmouth, Va. and Abby Cross and fiance Landon Mills of Camden; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Martha (Clyde) Stiles of Spring Arbor and Genieve Creamens of Jackson; a brother, Gerald Cross of Pullman, Mich.; mother-in-law, Irene Powell of Jonesville; four sisters-in-law; and three brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Andrew; granddaughter Brittany Kay Munsell; two brothers and two sisters. Susan T. Herbster, age 61, of Posey Lake passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at her home. She was born March 13, 1947, in Toledo, Ohio, to Fred and Anna (Burns) Morton. On July 10, 1965, she married James A. Herbster in Toledo, and he survives. Susan was a life member of the AMVETS Auxiliary Post #21 in Sebring, Fla., the F.O.E. Auxiliary Post #4240 of Sebring, Fla., and the F.O. E. Auxiliary Post #2371 of Adrian. Susan worked for E.I DuPont in Toledo, Ohio, and Mt. Clemens, Mich., until her retirement in 1997. After retiring, Suzy spent her summers at Posey Lake and winters in Sebring, Fla., where she made many new friends. Ah… life is good! She will be missed dearly by her family and friends. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Laura Burghardt and her husband, Mickey, of Adrian; one sister, Mary Pat Bacchus of St. Pete Beach, Fla.; two grandchildren, Nichole and Michael; and three great-grandchildren, Anahi, Nayeli and Rihanna.  She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Anthony Douglas Herbster; and a sister, Nancy McManus. The family of Susan wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. William Decker and staff and Hospice of Lenawee for their care and compassion. She was born December 8, 1926, in Thomas, Mich., to John and Birdith (Churchill) Fenner. She married Gernard "Charlie" Risdon on April 7, 1946 in Ortonville. Mrs. Risdon was a member of Deerfield Church of Christ for 37 years and a longtime member of T.O.P.S. #888. Evelyn was active with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for many years, because two of her daughters were diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy. She won Jack Bailey's Queen for a Day in 1963, asking for wheelchairs and other items to help her daughters. An award-winning designer, she owned Gotta Have It Graphics, providing design services to clients nationally and later channeling her talents into interior design. A vibrant person with a lust for life, Maureen touched many lives - from her design group to her tennis and golf clubs - and most avidly with her family, spending time boating and skiing in northern Michigan. A keen tennis player and golfer as an adult, Maureen was competitive figure skater in her youth. Her love of travel took her on many adventures in search of good food, wine, and hunting for treasures. Maureen's smile lit up every room. She is survived by her loving husband, David Wilson; her parents Norman and Barbara Obert; sister Gabrielle (Stephen J.) She had a passion for individuals with developmental disabilities that led to advocacy at the state and national levels. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1983 and a son, Francis, in 1965. She is survived by her children; Paul and Mary Zuzich of Tempe, AZ, Marge and Carey Bakker of Holland and Michael Zuzich of Romeo, MI; grandchildren, Michael Zuzich and Maria (Zuzich) Ries; a great grandson, Chase Ries; and a sister-in-law, Vera and John Kerastas of Farmington Hills, MI.
