LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Wednesday, January 14, 2009 8:27 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Follow LEEDprinciples To the editor, As a professional engineer and 1993 graduate of Adrian High School, I echo Commissioner Greg DuMars’ request to consider LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for Adrian’s new municipal project. LEED certification would ensure that all resources used on this project are optimized, including taxpayer dollars. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (www.usgbc.org), evaluates a project based on six main categories: sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. Points are awarded in each category, and different certification levels are awarded based on the number of points achieved. The LEED system is simple to apply, and it attempts to evaluate a building based on its sustainability (considering economics, society, and the environment). Just considering green materials will not necessarily allow the city to achieve the most-efficient structure. In fact, by only considering green materials, the city may actually pay more money for the structure. By considering the sustainability of the structure using the LEED system, the structure (and the city) will benefit from synergies developed in the design process. For example, the city may elect to upgrade the R-value of the windows or insulation (which will cost more money), but those windows or insulation may reap 10 times the savings in energy costs over the life of the building. In “Cost of Green Revisited,” Davis Langdon found that “Many projects are achieving LEED within their budgets, and in the same cost range as non-LEED projects.” And according to a study by GSA Public Buildings Services in June 2008 of 12 GSA LEED buildings, the LEED buildings used 26 percent less energy than the national average, had 13 percent lower aggregate maintenance costs, and had 33 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. The city should follow LEED principles in design of the structure, whether or not it applies for certification. Energy prices will only continue to rise, and the city should make a small investment now in ensuring reduced operating expenses in the future. Emily Aldrich Lorenz Chicago Below ceremony a hit To the editor, I would like to send a special thank you to my faithful Tory Booster members Darren Smith, Lesa Smith and Laurie Wielfaert for making the retirement of Duane Below’s jersey a huge success. (“Britton retires Below’s uniform,”Jan. 10) It was great to see our gym full and buzzing with excitement. Many alumni and friends came to town that night to honor one of our outstanding former student athletes. Darren, Lesa and Laurie worked very hard putting together the case containing his high school jersey, pictures, stats and memorabilia, not to mention the organization of the event. Mr. Clark, the varsity baseball coach, made a wonderful presentation along with athletic director Randy Salisbury. We also appreciate the outstanding sportsmanship displayed by the Sand Creek players, coaches and fans. Last but not least, thank you Duane. You bring hope to our youth and pride to our community. You have shown us with hard work and dedication, anything is possible, even in a small town! Malinda Luzier President, Britton Tory Boosters
