AMIN KAREN ANN 

The Amin family announces, with a broken heart, the passing away of their beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Karen Ann Amin on February 4, 2009 at her home in Lake City, Michigan. Karen was originally from the Manderfield family of Houghton, Michigan. She had a deep love of the Keweenaw Peninsula, visiting that area often when she came home from overseas. Karen received a nursing diploma from Grace Hospital in Detroit, and bachelor of arts degrees in Middle Eastern studies and Anthropology and a Master's degree in Public Health Administration from the University of Michigan. She is survived by her husband, Sam of 51 years, three sons and their spouses and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations are being gratefully accepted by the Cadillac Chapter of Hospice of Michigan. Arrangements were by the Young Funeral Home.

Albertus (Al) Vander Veen, age 82, of Holland, passed away Thursday, February 5, 2009, at his home. Al was born in Holland. He retired from HJ Heinz Co in 1987. Al served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of the DAV, VFW Post #2144, and the American Legion. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam Kammeraad, in 2004. Surviving is his wife, Donna, of 59 years; children, Eileen and Tom Wiersma of Holland and Diane and John Ybarra of Holland; son-in-law, Craig Kammeraad of Holland; seven grandchildren, Chris and Julie Wiersma, Chad Wiersma, Rhiannon and Derek Wolff, Ashley Kammeraad, Stephanie Ybarra, John Ybarra, and Myles Ybarra; eight great- grandchildren; sister, Leona Grotenhuis of Fennville; in-laws, Joann Cooper of Holland, Ken and Carol Strabbing of Fennville, and Cliff and Rose Strabbing of Fennville; several nephews, nieces, and cousins. Funeral, committal, and military services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday in the Chapel at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd., with  Rev. Michael Pitsenberger officiating. Alexis Nichole Sunrise Encinias, age 9, of Pioneer, Ohio died Feb. 3, 2009, at home surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born Sept. 26, 1999, in Toledo, Ohio, to Nick Encinias and Melissa Johns, of Pioneer. Alexis was currently attending North Central Schools and was in the third grade. She was a manager for the seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball team at the school. She is survived by her parents; twin brother, Logan Encinias; sister, Haylie Encinias, Pioneer and grandmother, Helen N. Wheeler, Alvordton, Ohio. Visitation will be 4-7:30 p.m. today, Saturday at Thompson Funeral Home, Pioneer with a service to follow at 7:30 p.m. Pastor Tyson Nofzinger will officiate. Interment will be in Sunset View Cemetery, Jonesville with a graveside service at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials are suggested to the family.

BRENDA MARIE HOUTHOOFD SANDUSKY Brenda Marie Houthoofd, age 51, went to be with her Lord and Savior on January 30, 2009 following a one-year illness. She was born May 14, 1957 in Pigeon, Michigan, daughter of Wilmer and Helen (Vollmer) Nimtz. Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Unionville-Sebewaing Area High School. Brenda and Evan Houthoofd were united in marriage on December 11, 1976 in Sebewaing. She had been employed at the Pizza Hut Restaurant in Sandusky for 24 years before coming ill. She was a member of Life Song Church of Snover. She enjoyed crafting, cooking, gardening and loved her many animals, as well as was happiest when serving others. She was known fondly by her mother as "Sweet Pea!" Surviving are her husband, Evan of Sandusky, parents; Wilmer and Helen Numtz of Sebewaing, two sisters; Peggy (Duane) Scharich of Unionville, Lori (Rocky) Joles of Sebewaing, two brothers; Tom (Michelle) Numtz, Michael (Laura) Numtz, all of Sebewaing, special nieces; Melissa Carpenterand Heather Joles, as well as other nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Betty H. Heilig 1925-2009 Betty Helen Heilig, 83, Harbor Beach and formerly of Minden City, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2009 at Saint Mary's of Michigan in Saginaw. Betty was born on April 25, 1925 in Brown City. She married Raymond John Heilig on June 7, 1949 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1986. She and her husband lived and farmed in the Minden City area for all of their married lives before moving to Harbor Beach. Betty attended the Del Mar Beauty School in Detroit, graduating as a licensed beautician. She owned Betty's Beauty Shop and was a beautician for 40 years in the Minden City area and Harbor Beach. She was a parishioner of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Ruth where she was a lifelong member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Christian Mothers. She was currently a parishioner at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Over the years she enjoyed gardening, crafts, sewing and was unbeatable at euchre and rummy. She loved taking trips to northern Michigan. Betty was a very loving mother and grandmother, always putting others first. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by three children, Raymond (Glenda) Heilig, Sandusky, Susan Heilig, Harbor Beach and Marjorie Moorehead, Midland; three grandsons, James, Scott and David Heilig and three great grandsons, Jordon, Andrew and Avery Heilig. She was preceded in death by one brother, Edwin Bootz and one sister, Kathryn Sloan. Funeral mass was held on Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Brian Alan Barrons, age 50, of Three Rivers, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening Feb. 3, 2009, at his home. He was born Feb. 16, 1958, in Elgin, Ill., a son of Lee and Winifred (Plant) Cochran. He had resided in Three Rivers for the past 1 1/2 years. Prior to moving to Three Rivers he had lived in Sturgis. Brian had been employed by Pioneer Hybrid in Constantine for the past 12 years. He was also a truck driver. Brian was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Army earning the rank of Private First Class. He was a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoyed riding his Yamaha 650 Venture and was also a member of several motorcycle clubs. He is survived by his wife, Vicky; two daughters, Brenda Barrons and Ayla Barrons both of Sturgis; a son, Brian Alan Barrons II of Sturgis; his mother, Winifred Cochran of Kalamazoo; four brothers, Robert (Betty) Barrons of Kalamazoo, Larry (Deb) Barrons of Kalamazoo, Kevin (Stepphanie) Barrons of Illinois and William (Judy) Barrons of Arizona; four sisters, Maryann (Tom) Keene of Kalamazoo, Rose (Val) Winnyk of New Jersey, Jennifer Barrons of Washington, D.C., and Susan Barrons of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Brian is survived by his girlfriend, Devin Pickford of Hudson; two beautiful children, Grayson, 8 months, and Alyssa, 11; his father, Robert Gillentine; two brothers, Shawn Gillentine and Robby Gillentine; a sister, Ashton Deleon; his grandmother, Geri Echler; and his aunts, uncles, and many cousins and friends, who loved him dearly.  He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Gillentine; grandparents, James and Ethel Smith; uncle, James Smith; and his grand­­­­father, Paul Gillentine. Brian was a loving father and a hard worker. He was an organ donor. He loved to cook, play video games, watch the Pittsburgh Steelers play and he was a great tattoo artist. Catherine and her husband Albert (Bud) Wightman owned and operated Wightman Farms and Lakeshore Growers until their retirement. She was a member of the Community Church of Douglas and served many providing compassionate care to family and friends. She enjoyed the great staff and care of the Golden Orchards Christian living family for the past three years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert (Bud), on July 5, 1993. Surviving are her children, Allen and Laura Wightman of Byron Center, Brian Wightman of Grand Haven, Ross Wightman of Fennville, and Martha Wightman of Hamilton; five grandchildren; and one  great-grandson; sisters, Edna and Betty; and brother, David Walsh. Daniel Scott Cummings,  age 48, died February 5, 2009, of complications from cancer. Dan was born September 16, 1960, in Athens, GA, to Bradley and Patricia Cummings and was the older of two children. Dan was a minister of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and faithfully served Five Points Community Church as its senior pastor since 1997. He had previously pastored in Hudsonville, MI, for 10 years.  Dan is survived by his wife, Lonette; a daughter, Sara; and two sons, Benjamin and Bradan. He is further survived by his father, Bradley; brother, Peter; and grandmother, Esther Bouman. David F. Seurynck 1952-2009 David F. Seurynck, 56, Alberta, Ala., formerly of Gagetown, passed away January 23, 2009 at his residence. He was born in Cass City on February 18, 1952, the son of Ila and the late Leo Seurynck. Dave was a dear friend to all who knew him. He enjoyed sports and hanging out with his buddies. After he left farming, he had a career in construction and spent several years living and working in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Currently he was living in Alberta, Ala., where he was self-employed. His death brings great sadness to his family and to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his mother, Ila Seurynck; his family, Al (Lori) Seurynck, Jeannie (Clare) Comment, Marylee Houghton, Shelly (John) Donaldson, Ruth Cummings and Gary Cummings; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a step-daughter, Stephanie Anderson. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo and a niece Jeannie Murphy. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. Rev. Steve Filion and Sr. Dorothy Ann Blasko officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to the St. Agatha Food Pantry. Doris J. Meyer, age 91, of Bronson, passed peacefully into the Lord’s Care on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009 at her home following several years of ill health. She was born June 24, 1917 in Leonidas, daughter of Loyd and Elda (Hagelgans) Outman and graduated from Colon High School in 1936. She briefly attended the Nichols Hospital Nursing Program in Battle Creek and spent her early adult years helping with the care of her younger siblings in a family of nine children in Leonidas. She moved to Bronson to serve as a housekeeper and lady’s companion to Mrs. Clint Powley. There, she met Ralph D. Meyer, whom she married on Nov. 21, 1941. Together they built their home and raised their two children in Bronson. Ralph died in 1994. Doris was a loving and dedicated home maker and mother, active in the Girl and Boy Scouts in earlier years and later working at the former Douglas Manufacturing Company (now Douglas Autotech) alongside her dear friend and long time neighbor Elberta Kolassa. Doris was a caregiver at heart and served as an active volunteer for 15 years as a member of the Branch County Community Health Center Auxiliary, contributing over 3,000 hours of service. She enjoyed traveling, photography, handcrafting, walking, biking and bird watching. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. For many years, she had attended the Pleasant Hill Missionary Church.                   Surviving are her daughter Linda Lance of Bronson; two granddaughters and their husbands, Michelle Meyer Essenberg and her husband Doug of Middleville and Melinda Pairitz and her husband Eric of Elkhart, Ind.; five great grandchildren, MacKenzie Pairitz, Megan Pairitz, Ryan Pairitz, Ellie Essenberg and Cecelia Essenberg; three brothers, Wayne (Carol) Outman of Mendon, Lyle Outman and Stanley (Betty) Outman, all of Leonidas; her daughter-in-law, Jessie Meyer of South Bend, Ind.; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Randall (Libbie) Meyer of Bronson, Ruth Meyer of Bronson, Rhea Meyer Savchuk of Ligonier, Ind. and Robert (Beth) Meyer of Cleveland, Ohio and her cherished friend, Vera Hurd of Bronson along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, her loving husband of 53 years, Ralph Meyer in 1994, her son Lynn Meyer in 2007 and brothers Harold Outman, Leon Outman and LeRoy Outman. Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Rev. Don Matteson officiating. Interment will follow in Matteson Twp. Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service at noon. Memorial Donations are suggested to the CHC Foundation for either the Auxiliary or Hospice, to Pleasant Hill Church Building Fund or to Branch County Commission On Aging. EDNA ROSANNA VATTER SANDUSKY Edna Rosanna Vatter, age 94, passed away on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Marlette Hospice Residence. She was born on May 12, 1914 in Snover, Michigan. She is the daughter of the late Edwin and Rosanna (Richards) Hill. Edna married Donald Nicholas Vatter on March 5, 1932 in Snover. He passed away July 17, 1982. Edna was a member of the Countryside Free Methodist Church. She was a nurses aide for many years at the Sandusky Hospital. She lived with and was lovingly cared for by Tom and Nancy Miller of Brown City for eight and one half years. She is survived by three daughters; Jeanette McLeish of North Carolina, Ruth Ann (Harry) Walker of Sandusky, Karen (Don) Innes of North Carolina, 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 8 great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by six sisters; Mary Clark, Lila Padden, Ada Waun, Jennie Armstead, Myrtle Kramp, and Carrie Snell, four brothers; Walter, Orville, Clark and Milo Hill, one son-in-law, Earl McLeish. Memorial services will be at the Countryside Free Methodist Church sometime in May. Interment: Christian Memorial Cultural Center, Peck. Elmer F. Susalla 1920-2009 Elmer F. Susalla, 88, Harbor Beach, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at Port Huron Hospital. He was born on August 3, 1920 in Parisville to the late Alois and Lucy (Kucharczyk) Susalla. Elmer and Susan Warchuck were united in marriage in Ubly, on April 26, 1940. She preceded him in death on September 28, 2002. Elmer retired from Circle Engineering in Sterling Heights, working as a Tool & Die grinder. He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Helena. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Elmer also attended Al's Restaurant with his lunch group for many years. He is survived by his son, Dennis (Kim) Susalla, Sterling Heights; son-in-law, Richard Typinski, Shelby Township; sister, Virginia (Melvin) Leppek, Ubly and three grandchildren, Alex Susalla, Susan Typinski and Rick Typinski. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan; sons, Elmer and Melvin Susalla; daughter, Shirley Typinski and a sister, Marian Klavon and her husband, Robert. Fred N. Kuipers, age 82, of Holland, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at his home.  He was born March 9, 1926 in Muskegon to Henry and Sylvia (Royle) Kuipers.  Fred was a 1944 graduate of Muskegon High School and served in the Air Force during World War II.  He married the former Betty Helton on August 20, 1949.  Fred was employed as the terminal manager at Holland Motor Express in Muskegon and came to Holland in 1961 to work in sales.  He retired in 1994 after 48 years of service.  Fred was a member of the Central Wesleyan Church and a member of the choir.  He was a member of the Holland Lions Club, a little league coach, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, Holland Rescue Mission and a tutor for Kids Hope.  He was named tutor of the year in 2007.  Fred wrote poetry for the Holland Sentinel on Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing with his family.  Fred is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty; sons, Steve and Deb Kuipers, Randy and Linda Kuipers, Bradley and Laure Kuipers, all of Holland; grandchildren, Todd, Stacey, Jennifer, Chad, Jeff, Jessica, Matt, Brett, Katy, Jen, Bruce, Daniel, Mason,Clayton Kuipers; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Brooklin, Raelin, Devin, Alec, Kirstin, Riley and Brendin Kuipers; a sister, Shirley Vasser of Las Vegas; a brother, Henry and Judy Kuipers of Hart, MI.  Fred was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Ashlin Faith Kuipers.  The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Sunday at the Northwood Chapel of Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes, 295 Douglas Ave, Holland.  Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Monday at the Central Wesleyan Church, Chapel, 446 W. 40th St. Holland.  Memorials may be given to the Holland Rescue Mission or the Hospice of Holland.  Please visit www.lifestorynet .com   to leave a memory for the family or sign a guest register.

Harold "Bud" Knuth, Jr. Dryden Harold "Bud" Knuth, Jr., 79, of Dryden, passed away Sunday (February 1, 2009). He was born July 29, 1929, in Detroit, to Harold and Christine (Cooper) Knuth. He married Mary Kay Werthmann on February 12, 1955 at St. Matthew's in Detroit. Bud graduated from Denby High School in Detroit, class of 1949. He attended college and earned his Associate's Degree. Bud served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked as an automotive engineer for many years, most recently working for Howell Engineering and Riverside Engineering. Bud also worked at Chamberlain Realty, selling real estate for many years. He was a champion chess player and loved boating, fishing and bowling. He was a longtime member of the Bay View Yacht Club and a 30-year member of the CPC (Citizens Probation Council). Helen Jane (Topps) Leppien 1925-2009 Helen Jane (Topps) Leppien, 83, Chandler, Ariz. went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, January 21, 2009. She was born on January 28, 1925, in Clare, daughter of Anna (Gamble) and Charles Topps. Helen was raised in Saginaw, Michigan where she graduated from Arthur Hill High School. On March 16, 1945 she was united in marriage to Karl J. Leppien, her junior high sweetheart. They were married for 63 years and together they raised two children. Helen worked as a bookkeeper and homemaker. Helen and Karl moved from Saginaw to Pigeon in 1957 where they resided until moving to Alma in 1979. In 1992, Karl retired and they moved to Arizona to be closer to their children and grandchildren. She was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Saginaw, Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon, Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mesa, Ariz. and Sun Lakes United Methodist Church in Arizona. She was also active in the Pigeon Women's Club and loved to support and entertain young people. She is survived by her husband, Karl, Chandler, Ariz.; daughter, Marianne Leppien-Oleson, Chandler, Ariz.; son, Raymond (Kelly) Leppien, Tempe, Ariz.; granddaughters, Jennifer Oleson, Chandler, Ariz. and (Anna) Clarisse Leppien, Tempe, Ariz.; grandsons, Parker Leppien, Columbia, Missouri and David Oleson II, Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at the Valley of the Sun Mortuary and Cemetery, Chandler, Ariz. in celebration of her new birth to her eternal home. Irene T. Hool 1925-2009 Irene T. Hool, 83, Bad Axe, formerly of Tallahassee, Fla., passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at her home in Bad Axe, while under hospice care. She was born March 8, 1925 on the family farm near Owendale, daughter of the late Nicholas and Catherine (Welther) Tabar. She was valedictorian of the Owendale-Gagetown High School class of 1943. Irene was employed in Detroit offices of Fisher Body Div. of GM working on the P-75 and B-29 airplanes. She was married to Howard C. Hool by Rev. Bernthal at Epiphany Lutheran Church, Highland Park on January 26, 1946. They shared over 55 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on May 28, 2001. Irene was also employed for years with the State of Michigan, MESC offices in Bay City and Caro. She and Howard owned and operated numerous business enterprises together. They owned North Grove Inn, Caro; Wagon Wheel Inn, Kinde; Fisher & Hool Construction Co., Kinde; Rite Way Construction Inc. and HP Construction Co. Inc., Treasure Island, Fla.; the Carousel Motel, Redington Beach, Fla.; Windjammer Motel, Treasurer Island, Fla. and various rental properties in Madiera Beach, Fla.. She also was a Florida licensed real estate broker and owned and operated Lai Rene Realty Inc, Gulfport, Fla. As a licensed pilot she and Howard spent many hours flying their airplane to Las Vegas, California, Canada and between Bad Axe and Florida. In 1976 they visited her father's birthplace in Hatzfeld, Austria-Hungary and maternal grandparents' birthplace in Transylvania. Their retirement years were spent between Madiera Beach, Fla. and Caseville. She finally returned to Michigan in 2004. She enjoyed reading and playing cards. She joined the Duplicate Bridge Clubs in Tallahassee, becoming a member of American Contract Bridge League and earning a number of master points. She enjoyed playing with the bridge players in the Thumb. She is survived by two loving daughters, Lynette Hahn and special friend, Robert Prange Sr., Bad Axe and Loretta (Abe) Alexander, Tallahassee, Fla,; two granddaughters, Sherri Hahn and special friend, Kevin Desjarlais, Westland and Kimberly (James) Yaroch, Sebewaing; two great-granddaughters, Kayla Yaroch, Bad Axe and Chambray Yaroch, Sebewaing; one sister, Esther Gartner, Warren; two brothers, Ralph Tabar, Owendale and Harold (Theresa) Tabar, Ocala, Fla. and numerous brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Howard Hahn; brother, Lon Tabar; two sisters-in-law, Mamie Tabar and Dorothy Tabar; brothers-in-law, Victor Gartner, Kenneth, Lawrence and Floyd Hool; sister-in-law, Evelyn Borodychuk; ex-son-in-law, William Hahn . As per Irene's wishes, there will be no visitation. A graveside committal service will take place later this spring at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sebewaing. Lynne Jane Dawson, 59, of Adrian passed away Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, at the Arbor Hospice, Ann Arbor.  Lynne was born July 22, 1949, in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., the middle child of Christian and Virginia (Ralph) Reinhardt. On June 8, 1996, Lynne married Dr. Michael Dawson of Adrian in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.  She was a graduate of the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. Prior to her marriage she was a real estate agent in the Detroit area. Lynne was a member of P.E.O, the Adrian Garden Club and Alpha Omega Club where she served as treasurer. First in Lynne’s life was family. She also loved crafts, her home, and her St. Bernards, Sasha and Barkley.  She did everything with class and touched everyone with her gentle spirit. She is survived by her loving husband, Mike; two wonderful sons, from a previous marriage, Jonathan (Jaclyn) Nicols of Ann Arbor and Jay Nicols of Royal Oak; her mother, Virginia Reinhardt; an older brother, Chris (Robolyn) Reinhardt, and a younger sister, Amy (Scott) Cameron. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, and many dear and loving friends, including Pam Threet and Cindi Gray who accompanied Lynne to many appointments. She was preceded in death by her father, Christian Reinhardt.  A memorial service for Lynne will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at Lumen Ecclesiae Chapel at Siena Heights University with Sister Peg Albert, O.P., officiating. Smith on May 15, 1943 in Carsonville, he died on September 17, 2001. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1987 after 36 yrs. of service, working at the Sandusky and Carsonville offices and served as Postmaster at Applegate. She married Jerry Burch in 1981, and they divorced in 2003. Madelyn came to the United States around 1947, and lived most of her life in the Adrian area. In December 2003, she moved to Dolan Springs, Ariz., to be near her sons. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Dolan Springs, Ariz. Survivors include one brother, Michael (Laura) Fisher of Adrian, Mich.; three children, Melvin Lynn Beach, Jr. of Dolan Springs, Marvin (Melody) Beach of Dolan Springs; one daughter, Katherine Michele Burch of Nevada; two nieces, Teresa Ann Fisher of Frankfort, Mich., and Amanda Lynn Fisher of Adrian; three grandchildren, Desra Ann Clark, Merrill Chase Beach and Shayla Lynne Beach of Dolan Springs. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. He was married Jan. 4, 1940 to Merle Galloway and she preceded him in death in 2006. Ora was a retired diesel mechanic for the Board of Public Utilities. He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII, having fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion in Hillsdale and was an avid pheasant hunter. He is survived by a son, Clyde (Mary) Carlisle of Quincy; three brothers, Darrell (June) Carlisle and George (Sue) Carlisle both of Hillsdale, and Glen (Sharon) Carlisle of Jonesville; five grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Besides his wives Merle and Lowell, Ora was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Ora Lee Carlisle and Gloria Jean Blaker; two sisters, Dora Brown and Judy Mann; two brothers, Robert and Clyde Carlisle; and two grandsons, Ora and Harley Carlisle. A memorial service for Ora E. Carlisle will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Rev. Nelson Brandymore officiating. On Dec. 31, 1993, he married Donna (Buys) Capman in Colon. He had worked as a foreman for Colmer Division of Maxitrol Company in Colon for 45 years, retiring in 2006. Phil enjoyed hunting, fishing and crafts. He is survived by his wife, Donna, of Colon; two daughters, Audrey (Steve) Wolford of Colon and Stephanie (Tim) Baker of Mendon; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, George (Sharon) Emmel of Colon; two sisters, Joyce Broker of Colon and Barbara Gronda of Carlton, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews, with a special nephew Joseph (Debra) Gronda. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Tom Fredenburg and Robert Fredenburg,  John Emmel and Charles Hoyt. The family will receive relatives and friends from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Phillip L. Russell drove truck for Millington Screw Company for many years until his retirement. He was a member of the Silverwood United Methodist Church and a 55 year member of the Burlington Township Fire Department. Russell served as Mayor of Clifford and council member of the Village of Clifford and served on the Burlington Township Board of review for many years. He also worked for the D.P.W. in Clifford, was a member of the Clifford I.O.O.F. and served on the West Burlington Cemetery Board. Richard worked for American Chain and Cable for 34 years before retiring in 1975. He was a loving husband and father. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, camping and was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed yard work and making woodworking projects for his family and friends. Richard was a past member of the Elks, Eagles and had attended the Fairfield Baptist Church as well as Bethany Assembly of God. Surviving Richard are his daughter, Carol Pfeiffer of Charlotte, N.C., and his son, Warren Ostrander of Sand Creek; his granddaughters, Stephanie (Steve) Matthews of DuBois, Pa., Kristin Sager of Houston, Texas, Kim Ostrander of Adrian, Wendy Ostrander of Hammond, Ind., and Matthew Ostrander of Jasper; great-grandchildren, Alexander Matthews, Kyle and Kody Nicholson, and Christina Ostrander; siblings, Kenneth (Lillian) Ostrander and Robert (Elaine) Ostrander, Joan Gaydosh, all of Adrian; Dorothy Wagner of  Palmyra and Velma Gonzales of Elk Grove, Ill.  In addition to his wife, Martha, he was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and four brothers. SHELDON, Richard F. Of Vicksburg Died February 5, 2009 in Centreville, MI. Richard was born January 13, 1949 in Elberta, MI, the son of Fay and Jeannette (McConnell) Sheldon and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for the past 53 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. While serving in the Army in Germany, he met his future wife Karen Jo Zieba to whom he was married on September 25, 1978. Richard was employed for several years as a mechanic at Krum-Hallam Chevrolet in Vicksburg. He enjoyed cars, fishing and bowling and could fix anything. Richard was preceded in death by his father Fay Sheldon. Surviving are his wife Karen Jo Sheldon of Vicksburg; a daughter, Kelly Jean Sheldon and a son, Anthony Gerald Sheldon, all of Joppa, AL; two grandchildren; his mother Jeanette Sheldon of Inverness, FL; one brother and three sisters, George Sheldon of Comstock, Vivian (Danny) Emmons of Scotts, Barbara Jurrick of Chattanooga, TN and Tina May of Palm Harbor, FL; several nieces and nephews. TRAVERSE CITY — Harry L. Weitz, M.D., F.A.C.R., 99, of Traverse City, died Thursday morning, Feb. 5, 2009, at Munson Hospice House, comforted by his loving family. Born Oct. 6, 1909, he was the son of the late Samuel and Gussie (Weitz) Weitz. On Aug. 14, 1938, in Battle Creek, he married the former Ellamarie Pearlman, who preceded him in death Nov. 18, 1973. Harry found love again and married the former Arlene Altrichter Batdorff on April 12, 1975. Harry attended and graduated from Detroit Northern High School in 1926, then furthered his education and graduated from City College of Detroit in 1929. In 1933, he graduated from Detroit College of Medicine (now Wayne State University School of Medicine). From 1933 to 1934 he served his internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Harry also served his Roentgenology Residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital and was distinguished by being the second Resident in the history of this residency. In 1938, Dr. Weitz completed training in combined diagnostic/therapeutic Roentgenology Residency at Beth Israel Hospital in Manhattan, N.Y. Moving to Traverse City in 1938, Dr. Weitz was hired by Dr. Sheets, Director of the State Hospital/Munson Hospital as Northern Michigan's first Radiologist. He was the first Radiologist north of Grand Rapids and was a pioneer in Radiology.Initially, he exposed his own x-rays, processed the x-rays, interpreted the x-rays and transcribed his own reports. Harry also trained his first x-ray technologist. Dr Weitz practiced as a solo radiologist for approximately 18 years. He not only established Radiology in northern Michigan as we know it today, but he brought to Traverse City and northern Michigan a critical specialty that did not exist here prior to his arrival. He provided radiology services over the years not only to Munson Hospital and the Traverse City State Hospital, but also hospitals in Frankfort, Kalkaska, Northport, Cadillac, Charlevoix and on occasion Petoskey. In 1941, Harry became a member of the American College of Radiology. He enjoyed sharing his time, talents and treasures with others as he was a founding member and served on the Board of Directors of Northwestern Michigan College for 12 years. For his outstanding service to the college, in 1973 he was named a Fellow of Northwestern Michigan College. Dr. Weitz served with the United States Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was nominated and elected as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1970, which is a prestigious honor bestowed by the ACR, on the basis of outstanding contributions and service to radiology (only 10 percent of the membership of the ACR are provided this honor). Harry continued to serve others by serving for years on the Board of Directors for the Children's Clinic at Munson Medical Center and his membership in the Traverse City Rotary Club. He was a proud member of Congregation Beth El, where he formerly served as President and Board member. Dr. Weitz was a well thought of mentor and teacher to numerous interns at Munson Hospital. He was one of the physicians initiating the internship program at Munson Hospital in the late 1950s. He was a colleague to numerous physicians who thought of him as an outstanding Radiologist, an outstanding Physician and a wonderful, caring human being. Colleagues, paramedical staff and patients remember him "as always a gentleman." He is survived by his wife, Arlene Weitz of Traverse City; children, Elliott Weitz, Sheryl Weitz and Dr. Charles (Ann) Weitz; stepson, Jack (Susan) Batdorff; seven grandchildren, Mark Weitz, Dr. David Weitz, Dr. Joshua (Dr. Lesley Loss) Weitz, Leah Weitz and her fiance, Adam Carlson, Wendy (Blake) Miller, Susan Batdorff and her fiance, Jackson Allen, and John Batdorff; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary Miller, Hope Miller and Anna Batdorff. In addition to his first wife, Ellamarie, Harry was also preceded in death by a sister, Ethel Sweet; and two brothers, Herman and Leon Weitz; and a stepson, Cris Batdorff. Viola Catherine Cauley, age 82, of Onsted went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009. Viola was born on June 30, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Charles and Bertha Lusty. She graduated from St. Michael’s in Flint in 1944. Viola married Robert E. Cauley on April 30, 1955, in Flint.  After celebrating 50 years of marriage together, Robert preceded her in death on Nov. 30, 2005. Viola was a homemaker, having raised eight children whom she was very proud of. She was an active member of the St. Joseph Shrine Catholic Church in the Irish Hills. For more than 10 years, she has belonged to a group that has met (at the home of her good friend Lorretta Lambaugh) the 13th of the month to pray the Rosary.  She prayed the Rosary of the Devine Chaplet at her home daily. She also belonged to the Red Hat Society. Viola is survived by her eight children, Patrick Earl (Vicki) Cauley II of St. Petersburg, Fla., Diane (Danny) Bragg of Saline, Elizabeth (Tedd) Bergeron of Ridgeway, Matthew (Lesa) Cauley of Saline, Frederick (Kimberly) Cauley of Brighton, Madeline (Tony) Valdez of Adrian, Michele (Michael) Wehr of Belleville and Ernie Cauley of Onsted; 38 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. (nee Zielinski) Age 95 of Detroit, died February 5, 2009 in Dearborn Heights. Beloved wife of the late Stanley F. Loving mother of Stanley R., Donald, Albert, Jenn, Jerome, Paul and Stephen Zonca. Grandmother of 14, great grandmother of many. Sister of Frank Gwizdz. Visitation Saturday 1-3 p.m. followed by a 3 p.m. funeral service at Querfeld Funeral Home, 1200 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn. Memorial donations to St. Vincent De Paul Society.
