Nicholas Waring Sulak

Monday, August 9, 2010 9:43 AM

Nicholas Waring Sulak, born Aug. 15, 1985, was always known as the gentle giant. He grew at an amazing pace from the shy boy hiding in the local grocery store, to the gentleman running for touchdowns for the Boyne City High School football team, to even the man working through a broken leg to stay on the Alma College's football team. Nicholas had a passion to be the best man he could be. He was always the ear for a troubled night, the mouth requesting words of wisdom, and the strong hands to pick up the most cluttered tales of friends, family, and loved ones. Nicholas had a passion for motorcycles, the wind in his face, mountains, the trails treading at his feet, and friends, the one's he'd carry when they couldn't walk on their own. Nicholas led a life full of mystery, adventure, and wisdom. He was a man who wouldn't bow down to any mountain, river, or roadway. On Aug. 7, 2010, Nicholas walked through the gates of heaven with his head held high and his arms wide open, meeting those that have ended their stories before him; proceeded in death by Joseph and Gladys Waring, Jerome Sulak, and Trevin LaBeth. And to that Nicholas Waring Sulak is survived by his grandmother Agnes Sulak, father Eric Sulak and wife Michelle, mother Nancy Donaldson and husband Terry, sisters; Michelle Sulak and Nicole LaBeth, brother Aaron, and hundreds of individuals that could call him a tank, the brother they never had, the friend they could never replace, and the model of what a strong man needs to be. He will never be forgotten… — With Love Aaron Sulak.

Richard (Dick) Harrison Reel, Sr. of Honolulu, formerly of Boca Raton, FL and Hinsdale, IL, died May 14, 2010.  He was 88.  He had a great life and will be fondly remembered by many, but most of all, by his loving wife, Peggy and their three children and families. He was born May 21, 1921 at Chicago Presbyterian Hospital to Theresa and Herbert Reel.  He spent much of his elementary school years in Hinsdale and his childhood summers along Lake Michigan in Shorewood.  His parents rented for a few years before buying a cottage in 1929 from the original owners, Irma and Ernest Fowler. His father retired early at age 40 because of a heart condition, which left Dick mainly responsible for the family at the age of 14.  His family soon moved to southern California hoping the weather would help his father’s condition.   After high school in Pasadena, he attended Pasadena City College for his 12th and freshman year.  He transferred to Stanford University in 1940, majoring in mechanical engineering.  He was a member and president of Beta Theta Pi and graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa.  Eager to serve his country, he graduated early in December 1942, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He attended Navy Reserve Officers Engineering training at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.  He graduated first in his engineering class and stayed on to teach until he was commissioned as a naval officer in August of 1943.  He served as an officer aboard the destroyer USS Thatcher in the Pacific during World War II. Before he shipped off to war, he and Margaret Durrell married in the All Saints Episcopal Church in Saugatuck on September 3, 1943, in a double-wedding ceremony with his sister, Nancy and her fiancé, Charles Dixon Hamilton, who was also in the Navy. After the war, he began his professional career in Chicago, where he worked for 25 years with the Anning-Johnson Company and later as president.  After his retirement at 50, the family moved to Boca Raton for the warmer weather and to be closer to their dream home they built on Winding Bay, Eleuthera, Bahamas. He spent all the summers of his life in Shorewood, and held positions as president, secretary, and board director of the Association for 34 years from 1964-1998.  In 1963, Dick and Peg bought their own cottage in order to spend as much time as possible at the lake each summer. His love of travel lasted a lifetime. While in their 70’s, he and Peg traveled to Egypt, Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, and the Galapagos Islands. He was incredibly bright and seemed to know something about everything, but remained a very humble man. He kept amazing records of all things in his life from the temperature of the lake each day to what he spent at the hardware store.  He was thrifty beyond measure. He cared for others, had a tremendous sense of responsibility and was honest to a fault. Best of all was his quick wit and sense of humor. He will be greatly missed. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Anita Albrecht. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; son Rich (wife, Leanne, Seattle); daughters, Joan (husband, Joe, Honolulu) and Susan (husband, Dick, Missoula);  four grandchildren; and his sister, Nancy Hamilton, of Florida and Shorewood. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be Friday, August 20, at 4:00 p.m. in the Lakeshore Chapel, followed by a gathering at 5:00 p.m. at their cottage, 580 Shorewood Drive. Memorial gifts may be given to the Land Conservancy of West Michigan, Saugatuck Harbor Natural Area.  Please contact Diane Sampson at 616-451-9476 or their website www.naturenearby.org.
