Loving wife of 68 years to Frank Merwin; devoted mother of Rhonda (Kenneth) Carpenter, Lisa (Bruce) McCallum, and the late Michael Merwin; dear mother-in-law of Patrice Merwin; caring grandmother of Michael (Jill) Merwin Jr., Shelley (Garrett Linnehan) Merwin, Steven (Tammy) Carpenter, Christine Carpenter, Rose (Keith) Huitt, Tessa Page, Meagan, Sarah, and Viktoria McCallum; dearest great grandmother of Astrid, Alex, Morgan and McKenna; sister of Mary "Dutch" Barton, Peggy (John) Combs, and Norma Pond; also survived by many nieces and nephews. Memorial Service will be Friday, October 1, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 3882 Highland Rd., Waterford. Anna L. (Pierce) Swank Bellevue Anna L. (Pierce) Swank, age 87 of Bellevue, passed away Friday, September 24, 2010. Anna was born on December 1, 1922 in Bellevue, Michigan to Elston and Jessie (Morris) Pierce. She graduated from Bellevue High School. Anna married Lindall Ray Swank on March 22, 1947. Anna is survived by two sons, Wendall Swank of Yucca Valley, CA and Jerry Blake of Vicksburg, MI; three daughters, Janet Outman of Bellevue, MI, Sheryl Robertson of Lincoln Park, MI and Sandra Kay Swank of Newcumberland, WV; two sisters, Ardell Torres of Pennfield and Letha Clift of Bellevue, MI, sixteen grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. Anna was preceded in death by her husband on December 28, 2006; one son Robert in 1952; her parents; four brothers, Leonard Pierce, Rodney Pierce, Elston Jr. Pierce, Richard Pierce; and one sister, Eltha Pierce. Anna loved traveling, mushrooming, feeding the birds, going fishing, especially for smelt and watching deer. She also liked gardening, embroidering and Elvis Presley. Autha Eilene Ladd Homer Autha Eilene Ladd, 89, of Homer passed away Friday, September 24, 2010, at Oaklawn Hospital in Marshall, Michigan, after a long illness. She was born August 26, 1921, in Continental, Ohio, to Otto L. and Laura E. (Bear) Niceswander. On March 23, 1940, she married Clyde O. Ladd who predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by four sons, Ralph (Ellen) Ladd Jack (Cindy) Ladd, Don Ladd, and Raymond (Susan) Ladd; one daughter, Kathleen (Thad) Sizemore of Florida; Fourteen grandchildren; and thirty great-grandchildren. She was predeceased also by sisters, Doris Scripter, Elsie Brant, Thelma Adams, Velma Fisk, and Gladys Warner; and brothers, Hershall and Bernard Niceswander Eilene was known for her sweet and giving spirit as well as an outstanding cook, dedicated mother and grandmother and will be most remembered as a woman with perfect love and dedication to them. She fits perfectly the woman of Proverbs 31. She taught her family the meaning of teamwork as well as good work ethics and a strong value system. She lived out her life with strength and dignity to the very end. She taught her children the meaning of being a family with her being the family "Pitcher" for the "team" and her love will continue to grow and honor her memory. Eilene was a Homer Community Volunteer for many years. Graveside service will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Litchfield, Michigan. Visitation will be Sunday, September 26, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the J. Charles moved to Arizona in April of 1998 after retiring from General Motors in Lake Orion, Michigan. Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Marilyn M. Boal of 54 years and 9 months to the day; sons, Charles R. (Arretta) Boal Jr., Darryl O. Boal and friend Brenda, Kenneth G. (Dianne) Boal; and daughter, Kimberly M. (Kent) Kruse. Survivors also include 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 3 brothers and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and aunts. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, James and Leona Boal; nephew, Jim Boal; and 2 aunts. Inurnment will be 2 p.m. October 18, 2010 at Mountain View Cemetery in Mesa, AZ. Mr. Thorp was an Iron Worker for over 30 years with Iron Workers Local 340. He retired in 1991. When he was younger he loved to fish and hunt. Later in life he enjoyed playing cards and dominos. He married the former Geneva Crandell in May 1959. She preceded him on October 30, 2002. He is survived by his daughters, Vicki (Ken) Sells and Dawn Thorp both of Battle Creek and his sons, Tom and Tim Thorp of Indianapolis and Cliff Thorp of Battle Creek. Donald S. Eckert Donald S. Eckert, age 68, of Clinton Township, passed away early Friday morning at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. He was born January 20, 1942, to Arthur A. and Loraine (Munce) Eckert in Mount Clemens, Michigan. On May 9, 1981, Donald married Mary Ann VerVaecke in Mount Clemens. The couple settled in Fair Haven, Michigan, moved to Florida for eight years, and has been at their present address since 2001. Mr. Eckert was a veteran of the United States Army, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Clinton Township, and Local 228. He was employed as an assembler for Ford Motor Company Sterling Heights Axle Plant for 31 years until retiring in 1996. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving is his wife, Mary Ann; children, Jeanann (Jeremy) Houghten of Lenox, Brian Eckert, Brenda (Brian) Paye, Mark Eckert all of Clinton Township, and Tammie Eckert of Harrison Township; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Arthur Eckert, Gert Devantier, Eleanore Sauer, Marge Nieman and Arlene Everett. Donald was predeceased by a stepson, Clark (Corinne) Odzark, in 2009. Donna J. Smith Battle Creek Donna J. Smith, 72, of Battle Creek, died with her family at her side on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Lifespan Good Samaritan Hospice Care Residence. She was born on June 22, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois to Donald M. and Margaret (Snyder) Richcreek. As a child Donna grew up in Northern Indiana and as a teenager in Independence, Missouri, where she graduated from high school. She received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Central Missouri State University. Donna taught school in Denver. CO and then worked for three years as a Flight Attendant for TWA. Donna loved helping children and was employed as a substitute teacher for the schools in the Calhoun County area, primarily teaching students at Battle Creek Public and Pennfield Schools. Donna was united in marriage to Morris L. Smith in Independence, Missouri on July 13, 1962. Surviving are Morris, her husband of 48 years; her son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Leslie Smith of Cherry Hills Village, CO; her three precious grandchildren, Cole, Elle and Bowen Smith; and her aunt, Eloise Smith of Tucson, AZ. Donna expressed her love for everyone, no matter where she met them or who they were; through her gift of gab, her ability to relate personally to others and her concern for all their needs. She attended North Avenue Church of God and was a docent at Binder Park Zoo. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Farm & Garden Club and the Leila Arboretum Society. Donna volunteered for many community activities including the former Leila Follies. She was an avid reader and involved in many of the activities at Willard Public Library. Most of all Donna loved people; she was warm and caring, whether you were family or someone she met for the first time. Memorial services to celebrate Donna's life will be held at a later date. HALL, EDNA RAMEY; was born in Otto, Georgia to Jeff and Ida Ramey on September 25, 1920 and passed away at the Cass County Medical Care Facility in her sleep on September 24, 2010. She resided in Royal Oak until moving with her husband in December 2008 to Forest Glen Assisted Living in Dowagiac to be closer to her daughter and family. She was the only girl in a family of six boys. She grew up in Franklin, NC, and attended cosmetology school in Murphy, NC. She worked as a cosmetologist until she met and married Harold J. Hall in 1946. After their marriage they moved back to his home in the Detroit area. She was proud of her skills as a homemaker for Harold until his death in May of this year. She is survived by her daughter, Diane (Harold) Grabemeyer; her grandchildren, Aaron (Noreen) and Mollie Grabemeyer; great grandchildren, Isaac and Connie Grabemeyer and sister-in-law, June Hall. A Celebration of her life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Royal Oak, Crooks Rd. at Webster, on Monday, October 4, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service at noon. Edward Joseph Zdziepko Edward Joseph Zdziepko, age 89, passed away September 24, 2010. Today the earth stood still as Edward Joseph Zdziepko entered the kingdom of Heaven. Born on April 16, 1921, in Detroit. He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Zdzipeko; brothers, Chester and Raymond; and one sister. He will be missed by his sisters, Julia, Lottie and Dolores. He was the most loving and caring uncle to Pat Olenzuk, Joanne Stomski, Sylvia Soldatek and Dennise Sztaba. He will be also missed by many great-nieces, great-nephews, relatives and friends. Ed was a World War II veteran and he earned numerous medals. He retired from Budd Company. Today our hearts are breaking for the one we love so dearly. Harold Dean Eanes Battle Creek Harold Dean Eanes was born on November 25, 1934 in Mounds, Illinois, to the late Eli and Callie L. Eanes, and brother who preceded him in death, Jesse Eanes. He made his transition at his home in Albion, MI on Tuesday, September 21, 2010. Harold graduated from Battle Creek Central in 1954. He was on the basketball team. Harold was employed by the Kellogg Company and Arrow Steel for several years. He also was employed with Post Cereal for 25 years were he later retired. Harold's desire in his youth as a shoe shine boy, was to one day have a place where his friends could come and enjoy themselves as well as get a shoe shine. This desire was fulfilled when he opened what was known as Harold's Hat and Shoe Parlor. He also enjoyed BBQ-ING for his friends. Harold leaves to forever cherish his memory, his friend and devoted wife, Vernita Eanes; his two sons and one daughter: Michael of Atlanta, Georgia, Lisa and Harold, Jr. of Grand Rapids, Michigan; four stepchildren: Sheila (Robert) of Battle Creek, Michigan, Joseph, Tondra and Sheena of Chicago, Illinois; twenty-one grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; his sister, Ollie Delores Webb of Pontiac, Michigan; his brother, Charles Joe Eanes of Salina, Kansas; three brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and one special person, Tahzh- his buddy. Jack was born October 29, 1929 to Arthur W. and Marguerite (Powell) Smith in Battle Creek. He married Lucille Rexius on March 31, 1959 in Ringgold, GA. He leaves his wife, Lucille, and four daughters, Brenda (Doug) Connolly of Gaithersburg, MD, Jennifer (Amir) Salehi of Buena Park, CA, Lorelie (Butch) Dake of Hastings, MI, and Danette (Mike) Shearer of Goshen, IN; his brother, Rolland (Pam) Smith of Lake City, MI; seven grandchildren, Jacqueline Michael of Hastings, MI, Maria and Jessica Salehi of Buena Park, CA, Nicholas and Caitlin Connolly of Gaithersburg, MD, Juliet Wilson and Joshua Shearer of Goshen, IN. He also loved his 3 cats. Jack was preceded in death by his baby son, Randal Scott; a granddaughter, baby Connolly; a brother, Robert Smith; a sister, Bernita Wood; and his parents. Jack served his country in, , in the Merchant Marines by taking his older brother's social security card, having the number tattooed on his arm, and going by the name of Rolland. Later, he joined the, , under his own name, serving from June 1948 to 1956, in the, , with honorable discharge. He worked many jobs through out his life, including a chicken ranch and diamond drilling rig in Tucson, AZ, where his second daughter was born. He also worked in an apple orchard, and building a dam in Washington state. He lived and worked on a dairy farm in Wasilla, Alaska, where his third daughter was born. He retired from Battle Creek Public Schools in the maintenance department with 23 years of service. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 Monday September 27 at the Royal Funeral Home. The service will be Tuesday September 28 at 1 pm. Interment with military honors immediately following the service at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. She is survived by her heartbroken children, Gerald, Jack, Diane (Robinson), James and Jeffrey. Also survived by 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. June was well known for her energetic spirit, optimism and compassion. She saw it as her mission in life to point out the positive qualities in everyone she knew and even those she just met. Never without a smile and a compliment, she inspired her family to "always look out for the little guy," "remember that God loves you" and "be thankful for all that we have." She was a lifelong Christian whose faith in God and her fellow man was never shaken. June was a longtime member of Ward Memorial Presbyterian Church. Born in Pennsylvania, she moved to Detroit as a young girl. She married Raymond Provencal with whom she had two sons, Gerald and Jack. In 1949 she met Harry Matheney at the Alice Coffee Shop which he owned and where she was employed. They fell deeply in love and married on New Year's Day, 1950. They are together now once again. Ted was a good Samaritan, a loving family man, a hard working and industrious man, a friend of everyone who spent any significant time with him. People with special relationships with the Freemire family will give testimony. Ted's surviving children will be present, Joanna Hall of Battle Creek, Ron Freemire of Bay City and Willard Freemire of Ramona, California. Extended family includes, spouses of Ted's immediate family along with their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, all who loved grandpa Freemire. Ted was born February 21, 1918, he died 92 years later on September 22, 2010. He spent most of his life in or near Battle Creek, and the surrounding area. As a person he is a good role model. His genuine personal interest in others will be his most missed quality and attribute. Evelyn Jean Patchett Lansing Age 63, passed away on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, from complications of a stroke she suffered two days earlier. Jean was born April 30, 1947 in Genesee County, in Atlas Township, and grew up in Perry where she graduated from Perry High School in 1965. Her sudden passing capped a life full of spirit and loyalty to her friends and family. Jean enjoyed a wide interest in hobbies and activities throughout her life, and was active in many organizations that advanced those interests. Among her various passions were horseback riding, scuba diving, motorcycling, crafts and music. They provided not only a source of enjoyment but enabled her to add to an ever-expanding circle of friends. Jean spent nearly 40 years working at the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 2006. She was also a member of the National Guard for 10 years, rising to the rank of Sergeant. Over the years, she would do volunteer work such as providing comfort services for St. Lawrence Hospital Emergency Room families. She was a past choir member and current member of St. Mary's Cathedral in Lansing. Playing flute, occasionally she joined in marching with various local reunion/military bands. She also sang for a time in a local Lansing choral choir. Jean was a long-time member of the Jug and Mug ski club, a member of the Michigan Rowdies for several years, just to mention a couple of the many organizations she was part of. Jean is survived by sisters Betty Patchett (Marge Caid) of Lansing/Constantine, and Carol Patchett Mick (Michael Bartkowiak) of Holt; a son, Trent Jakus of St. Johns; nephews Bob Patchett of Marshall, Tom Patchett (Angie) of Olivet, Jacob Mick of Dansville/Holt, Elijah Mick of Dansville/Holt, and, niece Amy Patchett of Grand Ledge; and three grandnieces and two grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her father Carl, mother Wanda, brother Don and grandniece Brittany. A gathering in remembrance of Jean will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 1, at the Mason-Holt Eagles #3734, 1111 N. Cedar Street, Mason, Michigan. Food will be served.
