Charles C. Fletcher Lapeer Charles C. Fletcher, of Lapeer, passed away Saturday (August 8, 2009), his 91st birthday. He was born August 8, 1918, in Cambridge, Mass., to Ralph and Mary-Lewis (Chenoweth) Fletcher. Charles served his country in China-Burma-India during WWII. In 1963, he married Mary Howting in Birmingham, where they lived until moving to the Lapeer area in 1988. In 1982, he retired from Ford Motor Company, where he was a photo lithographer. During retirement, he was a member of the Lapeer Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed gardening, photography and genealogy. He is survived by his special friend, Irene Blazo of Lapeer, and niece, Kris (James) Whitlock of Mears, Mich. (formerly of Lapeer). David Grosjean Allenton David Grosjean, 28, of Allenton (formerly of Capac) passed away Monday (August 3, 2009) at University Hospitals in Ann Arbor after a very brave fight against Hodgkin's Lymphoma since 2002. David Robert Grosjean was born September 19, 1980, in Rochester, the son of David and Debra Grosjean. David grew up in Capac and graduated from Capac High School in 1999. He was a member of the Whittemore Raceway Association, the Auto City Raceway in Flint and Owosso Speedway in Owosso. He worked as a mechanic and at Hungry Howie's in Imlay City. He was very enthusiastic about building and racing his Monte Carlo stockcar. Dorothy F. Braun, 84, of Marco Island, Fla., formerly of Adrian and Devils Lake, passed away Aug. 8, 2009, in Naples with her family present. She was born March 29, 1925, to Gale and Florence Gilbert in Onsted, Mich. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1942. She married Richard A. Braun on Aug. 12, 1944, and was to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary on Wednesday.  While in Adrian, Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Bixby Hospital Auxiliary, Lenawee Country Club and Devils Lake Yacht Club. After moving to Florida, she was a member of Marco Island Power Squadron, Wesleyan Methodist Church, Marco Island Fire and Rescue Foundation, and Marco Island Yacht Club.  Her greatest love was her family and her sewing. Surviving along with her husband, Richard “Dick,” are two daughters, Cynthia Braun of Marco Island, Fla., and Carol (John) Cordes of Rockford, Mich.; son, Keith (Sheryl) of Marco Island, Fla.; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Braun of Naples, Fla.; six grandchildren, Cari and Kip Braun, Ryan and Emily Cordes, Jessica and Kelsey Braun.  She was preceded in death by her son, Martin G. Braun; brothers, Richard and Mark Gilbert; and sister, Mary Laudenslager.  Funeral Services for Dorothy will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at the Wagley Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wilson Wood officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Douglas F. Mernitz Lansing Doug peacefully passed into the light on Monday, August 10, 2009 at Hospice House of Mid-Michigan. He was born on September 10, 1946, in Chicago Heights, Illinois, to Paul Richard Frederick Mernitz and June Marie (Rowley) (Mernitz) Christensen. Doug was raised in Alma, MI and graduated from Alma High School in 1964. He received his BA in 1968 from Kalamazoo College and was a member of Sherwoods Fraternity. Doug then served from 1969-1970 in the U.S. Army. He earned his Masters degree in Urban Planning from MSU in 1973. Doug was preceded in death by his father, Paul, and beloved in-laws, Eugene and Grace King. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie E. King of Lansing, MI; his mother, June Christensen of Alma; daughters, Heather Mernitz (Brandon Levasseur) of Greenfield, WI and Whitney Mernitz of Denver, CO; his sisters, Marilyn (Robert) Neuner and Glenna Brinker of Portland, OR; siblings, Nancy (Warren) Collisi of Saginaw, MI, Wayne (Judy) King of Sanford, MI, Catherine Baker of Mesa, AZ, Sally (James) Accetta of Charleston, SC, Maynard (Carol) Christensen of East Lansing, MI, Mary Lynn (James) Webster of Grand Rapids, MI, Ronald (Kristy) Christensen of Brunswick, ME, and Nancy and Linda Christensen of Michigan; nephews, Michael and Paul Brinker; cousin, Robert (Elaine) Ahrendt and other special cousins; the entire wonderful King, Grambau, and Christensen extended families; former wife, Janice (Koltko) Mernitz of Haslett, MI; gracious neighbors; and his beloved cats, Morticia, Callie and Casey. Eleanor M. Gillespie, M.D., 94, died at home in Suffield, Conn., on July 23, 2009, following a long illness. She was born on Sept.4, 1914, in Pontiac, Mich., a daughter of Judge Glenn C. Gillespie and Leola Chamberlin Gillespie. Dr. Gillespie received a B.A. from Wellesley College in 1936, where she was a member of Sigma Phi honor society. She also earned a degree from the Philadelphia School of Occupational Therapy and worked as an occupational therapist at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. When Pearl Harbor was attacked in 1941, Eleanor decided to attend medical school.  She received her M.D. in 1944 from the University of Michigan and then worked for a year as an intern at Lincoln General Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. Dr. Gillespie opened a private general practice in Sturgis, Mich., in 1945 and provided for the medical needs of families in Sturgis for over 23 years. She was a founder and trustee of Glen Oaks Community College, serving students in Sturgis and in all of St. Joseph County. She was also a supporter of Camp Fort Hill, a camp for children and a community recreation center and natural area on Middle Lake near Sturgis. In 1984, she donated 68 acres of land to the camp, stipulating that the land “shall forever be maintained and utilized for the benefit of the youth of the City of Sturgis.”  Dr. Gillespie moved to Wellesley, Mass., in 1968 to study anesthesiology, which had long been an area of special interest to her. She completed a residency in anesthesiology at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston in 1970.  She then practiced anesthesiology at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. Upon her retirement in 1977, Dr. Gillespie moved to New London, N.H., where she lived for many years with her long time friend and companion, Blanche Emory. Following Blanche’s death in 1992, she moved to Suffield, Conn., in 2006 to be near her cousin Diana Rossow and Bob Rossow. Dr. Gillespie loved art, music, ballet and opera, and she was an avid piano player. She frequently attended concerts and performances in Boston in her later years and was a life-long supporter of the arts. She was also an accomplished genealogist and spent many hours researching and writing about the history of her family. She enjoyed travel and took a special interest in her family heritage in the United Kingdom. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Mayflower Descendents, the American Medical Association, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Alpha Epsilon Iota Medical Fraternity. Eleanor was a warm-hearted and generous friend to all who met her, and was particularly devoted to her younger sister, Eunice. She had a kindly and genteel demeanor and often surprised friends with her mischievous sense of humor. She was a respected member of the medical community, a pioneer who began her career with a solo family practice in a small town and moved to a large city at the age of 54 to complete a residency in anesthesiology, a great accomplishment as a physician and as a woman.   Dr. Gillespie was preceded in death by her parents and by her sister, Eunice J. Hendrix, and brother-in-law, Robert C. Hendrix, M.D. She is survived by three nephews, David Hendrix, Glenn Hendrix, and Dan Hendrix, and one niece, Anne Fitzgerald, their spouses, and by numerous great-nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Diana Rossow and daughter Elizabeth Jackson. She was a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sturgis. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 110 South Clay St., Sturgis. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Sturgis. A reception and luncheon in celebration of Dr. Gillespie’s life will be held at the main lodge at Camp Fort Hill at 2 p.m. Directions will be provided. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Sturgis Area Community Foundation Camp Fort Hill Endowment Fund or Performing Arts Endowment Fund, or the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s and Women’s Hospital.   |

He was born in McKinley Township on December 29, 1926, the son of the late Chris William Frederick and Anna Marie Fredericka (Wurst) Licht and attended the Hayes Rural School. He was a member of Cross Lutheran Church in Pigeon. Elmer was a lifetime resident of Pigeon and was a farmer, carpenter, and cemetery sexton. He is survived by one brother, Kenneth I. (Betty) Licht, Pigeon; a sister, Verlene G. (Robert) Stiefel, Essexville; a brother-in-law, Gerhard W. Kundinger, Sebewaing and many nephews, nieces and their children. Frank Emil Peplinski Green Forest, Ark. Frank Emil Peplinski, 75, of Green Forest, Ark. (formerly of Fenton) died at home with family by his side on Aug. 5, 2009. He was born in 1933 to Frank W. and Ella A. Peplinski of Flint. Frank graduated from Utley H.S. in 1950, taught music and accordion, and went on to further his education in skill trades. Frank retired after 34 years at Flint Chevrolet in 1985 as a Tool and Die Maker and moved to Arkansas. George H. Hassenzahl, age 85, of Clayton passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Pontiac, to Walter and Leitha (Williams) Hassenzahl. On April 14, 1945, he married Irene Pickford in Seward, Ohio, and she survives. George was a farmer and also worked for Champion Home Builders in Adrian until his retirement in 1980. He was a member of the Canandaigua Community Church.  He was also a member of the Masons, Past Master of the Medina Lodge, a present member of the Fairfield Lodge. In addition to his wife, George is survived by two sons, Larry Hassenzahl and his wife, Sandra, of Battle Creek and Edward Hassenzahl and his wife, Cheryl, of Hudson; two daughters, Gerrie Sienkiewicz and her husband, Robert, of Merritt, N.C., and Diane Sharlow and her husband, Paul, of Oregon, Ohio; a sister, Elvina Brazee of Morenci; a sister-in-law, Barbara Hassenzahl of Clayton; 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl and Paul; and a great-granddaughter, Abigail Sayer. Funeral services for George will be held Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Burial will be in Canandaigua Cemetery. Gerald W. Brown Gerald W. Brown, 78, Caseville, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at Genesys Hospice. Gerald was a veteran on the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Clio American Legion. After 42 years working for the Buick Motor Division, he retired from there in 1992. Gerald had owned property on Sand Point for decades. Before the area was developed, he would camp on his lot with no one around and later he was one of the first to build a house in that area. After retiring, he moved there permanently. Jerry was active in the Sand Point Association, serving as treasurer of that group. As he rarely cooked, he was well known around town in the restaurants and kept well informed on local happenings. Someone could always be heard saying "Hi Jerry." He is survived by his sister, Dolores (George) Smith; eight nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Erma Brown and his sister, Beverly Egan. A memorial service was held on August 8, 2009 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville with Rev. She was born September 4, 1950, in Brown City, to Gerald and Alma (McAllister) Townsend. She married DuWayne Hammill on August 17, 1974 in Lapeer. Geri's family was very important to her. She was a high school counselor at Goodrich High School for 23 years. Geri loved her work and her kids at school. She enjoyed outdoors, horses, her flower gardens and their property up north. Irving Friberg of Osseo passed away Sunday, July 12, 2009 at the Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was born Oct. 6, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio the son of Abraham and Esther (Noer) Friberg. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sonia Friberg whom he married on Aug. 14, 1960. He is also survived by two children, Jeffrey Friberg of Westland, and Michelle (Timothy) Tremmel of Wauseon, Ohio; and two sisters, Rose Gottlieb of Toledo and Betty (John) Selinske of Lake Ozark, Mo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Friberg served his country in the United States Army from 1950 through 1952. He worked for the City of Detroit and retired after 27 years of service. At his request cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Irving Friberg will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 1 p.m. Saturday with Pastor Lester Smith officiating. James Eugene Rice, 66, passed away Thursday evening, August 6, 2009 at his home in Ann Arbor. He was born on Nov. 8, 1942, in Ann Arbor, to C. Alfred and Evelyn Rice. He graduated from Coldwater High School in 1960 and the University of Michigan, where he earned undergraduate degrees in engineering, a PhD in physics, and an MBA. He married Sandra Johnson on Aug. 17, 1968. She survives. He was employed as a scientist/engineer at several Ann Arbor companies, including Bendix Aerospace, Optimetrics, KMS Systems, and, in 1991, with several colleagues started his own engineering company, Canopus Systems. Several of the systems that he worked on have been flown in various space missions.  He retired in 2000 after being diagnosed with melanoma and devoted himself to family, travel, and service on the Coldwater School Board. His melanoma returned earlier this year and he returned to Ann Arbor for treatment and hospice care. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, a daughter, Amy and husband-to-be Simon Perkins, a son David, his wife Whitney, and grandsons Broden and Zane, and a brother Philip. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert, who passed away earlier this year. Jim had a wide range of interests, especially in politics and international relations, and established the Rice Family Fund for Understanding at the Branch County Community Foundation to provide scholarships and to support other programs in this field. He owned the family farm in Girard for almost 40 years and took great interest in farm policy, water quality, and irrigation issues. Family was the most important to him, and we remember camping trips, cross-country train rides, and international travel that we did as a family. He also stayed close to his brothers and cousins and visited them often. Services will be held on Tuesday, August 11, at 11 a.m. with one hour of visitation prior to the service at the Putnam Funeral Home in Coldwater with Dr. James Troust officiating. The family will greet friends on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in West Girard Cemetery. James K. Gardiner, age 87, of Fort Wayne, Ind., formerly of Hudson, passed away on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at Bethlehem Woods Rehab­ilitation Center in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born on Sept. 2, 1921, in Fort Wayne, Ind. Jim lived his early life in Fort Wayne and then he lived in Hudson since 1946. He married Marcile B. Surfus on March 20, 1943, in Fort Wayne, Ind., and she survives. Jim graduated from Northside High School in Fort Wayne in 1939. Jim and his wife owned and operated Gardiner’s Decorating Center in Hudson for 55 years, retiring in 2001. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army where he was an M.P. in the C.B.I. Theater. Jim was a very active member of Hannan-Colvin Post #180, American Legion in Hudson, where he was Past Commander and also a life member. He was a former member of the Hudson Fire Department, member of the Devils Lake Yacht Club, Past President of the Hudson Kiwanis Club, member of the Hudson Jaycees and member of the Hudson Police Auxiliary. Jim was an avid golfer.  Surviving besides his wife, Marcile, are one son, David (Terri) Gardiner of Clear Lake, Ind.; one daughter, Janice (Geoffrey) McCord of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Channing (Sarah) Gardiner of Aurora, Ill., Geoffrey A. McCord of Avilla, Ind., SPC James McCord serving in the United States Army in Germany; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Dee Gardiner of Findlay, Ohio; one sister, Ann (Robert) Lemons of St. Joseph, Mich.; nephews, nieces and cousins. Joseph Piechura Columbiaville Joseph Piechura, 88, of Columbiaville, owner of Kings Landing Kampground in Columbiaville for the past 37 years and retired superintendent at Chrysler's Warren Truck Assembly, passed away Wednesday morning (August 5, 2009) of heart complications at his home overlooking Miller Lake. His wife of 62 years, Peggy, sons, Paul, Craig and Rick, and daughter, Kathy Piechura-Couture, were at his side the day he died. Piechura was a well-known, well-liked figure in the community north of Lapeer, due to the popularity of his lakefront campground, picnic grounds and store. The park held annual events such as Fourth of July fireworks displays and pig roasts, corn roasts and Halloween celebrations. Some campers are third-generation regulars at the park. Piechura was the youngest of five children. His parents, Michael and Cecilia Piechura, were Polish immigrants who first settled in Pennsylvania. Lois Ann Williams, age 73, of Adrian died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, at 7:50 p.m. at her home. She was born July 14, 1936, in Macon Township to David and Elda (Meyer) Younglove. On Aug. 26, 1958, she married Glenn F. Williams. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1980. She had been an active member of the First Church of the Brethren, Adrian, where her husband had been the minister for many years. Lois had been a volunteer for the Red Cross, coordinating the blood drives for 30 years, for the Lenawee Co-Op Extension for many years, and was actively involved in Child Evangelism Fellowship. Lois is survived by her children, Timm (Tracy) Williams of Lansing, Rita Rutledge of Pioneer, Ohio, and Dale (Trish) Williams of Adrian; two sisters, Marie (Tom) Judkins of Britton and Barbara (Harvey) Gatt of Tecumseh; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  In addition to her husband, Glenn, she was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Ruth Rutherford. Funeral Services for Lois will be held Thursday, Aug. 13, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with the Rev. Robert Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Lorene C. Engelhardt Lorene C. Engelhardt, 85, Sebewaing, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 31, 2009. She was born on the family farm near Sebewaing on September 11, 1923, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Stoeckle-Taschner) Hafner. Sixty-seven years ago, on May 16, 1942 she was united in marriage to Carl F. Engelhardt in Sebewaing. Lorene was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh where she served in many volunteer capacities with the Ladies Aid, Ladies Choir, and Lutheran World Relief. One of her greatest pleasures was serving as a volunteer at the church's day school and listening to students read. She enjoyed baking, canning, crocheting, gardening and sewing. She retired from General Cable Corporation of Cass City in 1984 and served as the retiree group's secretary-treasurer for many years. In addition to her husband, Carl, she is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Connie) Engelhardt, of Rose City and David (Patricia) Engelhardt, Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Jeanette (Michael) Bach, Sebewaing and Joy (Gilbert) Sprague, Owendale; eight grandchildren, Kenneth (Melissa) Engelhardt, Kurt Engelhardt, Kathy Henderson, Michelle (Brad) Burke, Kevin (Brenda) Fritz, Elizabeth Engelhardt, Heather Sprague and Jeremy Sprague; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Charles and Dan Taschner and Roland Hafner; and by three sisters, Irene Lorenz, Edna Knott and Dorothy Buschbacher. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Rev. Allen R. Stoll officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Mary Ann Flynn, 79, of Burlington, died on Thursday, August 6, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Flynn was born on March 30, 1930, in Coldwater to Joseph and Ona (Boone) Lothamer.  On October 2, 1948, she married John J. Flynn in Marshall.  He preceded her in death on September 14, 1997. Mrs. Flynn was a home maker, and she stayed at home and raised her family on their farm.  After her children had grown up, she worked for Acorn Building Components for 15 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Union City.  Mrs. Flynn enjoyed spending time in her flower garden, watching her many humming birds, reading, and playing euchre. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a warm, generous, loving mother, and grandmother and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her four daughters, Sue (Bob) Cahrier of Fort Wayne, Ind., Pamela (Fred) Woods of Ceresco, Carol (Dan) Nearpass, of Coldwater, Cathy (Randy) Combs of Tekonsha, eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her siblings, Donald Lothamer, Betty Bean, Floyd Lothamer, Theresa Benjamin, Shirley Licht, and Linda Clark. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son James Flynn, a grandson Timothy Kleinhardt, brothers Paul, Bob, Jim, David Edward and Alfred Lothamer. Phyllis M. Haas, age 79, of North Adams passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. She was born on April 28, 1930, in Pittsford, Mich., to Charlie G. and Geraldine (Hinkley) Calkins. She married Harry R. Haas on Feb. 8, 1948, in Pittsford, and he survives. Phyllis lived her early life in the Pittsford area and then she lived in the Addison and North Adams area for many years. She graduated from Pittsford High School in 1947. She was formerly employed at the Addison Telephone Company and Dr. Kelly’s Veterinary Clinic and was a former secretary at Addison High School and then a secretary at Lee Stamping in Addison. She was a former member of the Lady Elks of Hillsdale, member of Hudson American Legion Auxiliary and former member the Sweet Adelines of Adrian and Coldwater. Surviving besides her husband, Harry, are one daughter, LuAnn Bowers of Adrian; one son, Charlie Haas of North Adams; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charlie Calkins, Jr. and Verlin Calkins. Cremation will take place. A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug, 14, 2009, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. Priscilla Lou Shaver East Lansing Age 72, passed away August 10, 2009. She was born May 30, 1937, in Lansing, to Fred "Cuddy" and Harriet Shaver, who preceded her in death. Priscilla was a teacher with the Lansing School District for 30 years, finishing her career at Lewton School. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at MSU, and was a sorority house representative. Surviving are her brother, Fred (Berneice) Shaver of DeWitt and step-nephews, Zachary B. Smith and Gregory J. Smith. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Evergreen Cemetery in Lansing, with The Rev. Dr. Harry H. Robert J. Bairski Robert John Bairski, 85, Bad Axe, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. He was born on April 12, 1924 in Kinde, son of the late Frank and Anna (Miller) Bairski. He married Marjorie L. Johnston on January 19, 1946 in Kinde. Robert was a lifetime resident of Bad Axe. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Bad Axe and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie L. Bairski, Bad Axe; son, Robert D. Bairski, Bad Axe; daughter, Diane Lynn Harris, Bad Axe; three grandchildren, Jill Cederberg and special friend, Tom, Michael Bairski and special friend Tricia Kubacki and Steven (Tracy) Harris; six great-grandchildren, Josh, Marissa and Kaitlyn Woodruff, Laci Harris, Zachary Garcia and Cody Kubiak and two sisters, Betty Cummings, Bad Axe and Delores (Charles) Brown, New Boston. Robert Oakley, 87, of Concord passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at home. He was born Aug. 18, 1921 in Howell the son of Albert and Alice (Shoemaker) Oakley.     During World War II, Bob served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Although he worked as a plumbing and heating contractor, he was always an outdoorsman at heart. He loved fishing and golfing and will be remembered for his character, integrity and quiet way of helping his friends and neighbors. Survivors include his wife, Doris (Johnson) Oakley, whom he married July 2, 1965; four daughters, Susan (Norman) Sullivan of S. Milwaukee, Wis., Martha (Mark) Sweet of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Nancy (Lyn Rochester) Oakley of Taylors, S.C., Carol (Larry) Allen of Claxton, Ga.; two sisters, Grace Oakley of Jackson, Edna Orgeck  of Southgate; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Ruth M. DeMeritt, age 95, of Adrian passed away Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility.  She was born June 5, 1914, in Adrian, the daughter of Martin and Amelia (Lipp) Woller. Ruth graduated from Blissfield High School in 1932. She married Ronald Goist, who was the father of her three children. He preceded her in death in 1956. She later married Edward C. DeMeritt on Nov. 16, 1963, who preceded Ruth in death in 1973. Ruth was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where she was active in many groups. Ruth is survived by a son, Roger (Brita) Goist of Sanger, Calif.; and a daughter, Sharon (Dennis) Schober of Reeds Spring, Mo.; a daughter-in-law, Janic Goist of Mesa, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Randy Goist, Jonie Anderson, Vicki Greenberg, Margo White, Vincent, Gregory and Darrin Schober; 13 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, Ruth was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Goist; and a brother, Willis Woller. The funeral service for Ruth will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Joel Sarrault officiating. She was a member of the Country Christian Church in Deerfield Township, White Tails Unlimited Club and Delta Kappa Sigma Sorority at C.M.U. She enjoyed camping with friends, traveling and most of all, her family. She is survived by her husband, John of Clifford; two sons, Christopher (Tanya) Sharp of Traverse City and Chad (Jen) Sharp of Fenton; and four grandchildren, Savannah, Isabella, Dylan & Ayden. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Kevin and one grandson, Jonathon. Thomas P. Rhein Lum Thomas P. Rhein, 59, a lifetime Lum area resident, passed away Thursday (August 6, 2009). He was born March 14, 1950, in Lapeer, to Peter and Ethel (Diehl) Rhein. He married Bonita Burton on February 16, 1974 in Brown City. Mr. Rhein worked as a sales manager in furniture, as well as other retail goods. He enjoyed fishing, camping, visiting Las Vegas and loved his dogs: Joey, Cubby and Milo. Thomas was a loving husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Bonita Rhein of Lum; daughter, Valerie Rhein of Lum; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, as well as many nieces and nephews. William "Billy" Andrew Beckett Lansing Age 25, loving son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend passed away into eternal life on Saturday, August 8, 2009, in Lansing, MI, with the love of his life, Monica "Mona" Moreno. The two were inseparable and had begun to plan their future together. Billy was born September 9, 1983, in Lansing, MI, a son of William Austin Beckett and DeeAnn Macklem. When Billy was a youngster, he spent the majority of his time being a typical boy and finding a way to get into any sort of mischief he could. He also participated on many sports teams and loved to sing in the choir. Later, he attended Grand Ledge High School, where he was a pitcher for the baseball team. He then graduated from Sawdon Alternative High School in 2002 and Grand Ledge High School in 2003. Billy's true passion in life was his family and friends. He loved nothing more than large family gatherings, where he proceeded to tell jokes and share stories, which made everyone cry from laughing so hard. Billy spent a lot of time with Layla, his Rottweiler, which he and Mona thought of as their baby-girl. He also loved to play sports, especially basketball and golf, with his brother and best friends while turning everything into a competition (that he somehow always won). He had a genuine, kind, caring, compassionate soul that radiated out onto every life he touched. Billy truly was "that guy" to every life he was a part of and will be greatly missed. Eeeeeeeent Billy is survived by his parents, William (Jeanne) Beckett and DeeAnn (Lloyd) Macklem; brother and sisters, Amy (Jason) Krause, Patrick (Melissa) Grace, Susie Grace (Justin Garner) and Katie Beckett (David Land); aunts and uncles, Dave (Lisa) Prescott, Peg Giller and Barb Beckett; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special friends, whom he considered brothers, Jake and Wes. Memorial services will be held Saturday, August 15, at 2 p.m. at the Gorsline-Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing.
