'Mac' MacCarroll "Mac" MacCarroll, age 92, a Twin Pines milkman for most of his life, made his last "stop" August 24, 2009 during a brief hospital stay. He is survived by his wife of 67 years June and his four sons: Jay (Judy), Pat (Elaine), the most beloved Ken (Stephanie), and Mike (Lorraine). Also seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mac also sold real estate for 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, cards, ballroom dancing, playing the banjo, and golf. For many years he volunteered for the American Red Cross. Antoun Aftimos, M.D. Lapeer Antoun Aftimos, M.D., 43, of Lapeer for 9 years, passed away Sunday (August 16, 2009). He was born August 2, 1966, in Damascus, Syria, to George and Marie (Sioufi) Aftimos. He married Monique Hardy in Honolulu, Hawaii. Doctor Aftimos was a well-liked and respected physician. He was the owner/ operator of the Aftimos Clinic, served as the Medical Director of Heartland Hospice, Medical Director of the Transitional Care Unit at Lapeer Regional, as well as Medical Director of My Home-AFC. Doctor Aftimos was a member of the Michigan State Medical Society and enjoyed teaching clinical rotations. On his private side, he enjoyed his weekly poker club, playing and watching soccer and, most importantly, he loved his wife, boys and family. He served his country in the U.S. Army 1960 to 1963. He married Carleen VanNest June 18, 1983 in Royal Oak. Bob attended Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sandusky. He was a member of the North Branch Masonic Lodge #312 F&M. He was past High Priest Rochester Chapter #637 Royal Arch Masons, a Michigan order of High Priesthood, served as D.D.I. Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Michigan Member of North Branch R.A.M. He was past Thrice Illustrious Master of Pontiac Council #3 Royal and Select Masters. He served as chairman for 120th annual assembly of Grand Council Royal & Select Masters of Michigan. He was a member order of the Silver Trowel. Bob was past commander of Romeo Commandery #6 Knights Templar, and a Moslem Temple Shiner and member of Prince Edwin York Rite College #8 in St. Clair Shores. He was also past Chairman & Dad Advisor Rochester Chapter Order of DeMolay Rochester and Holder of the advisor Honor Key and DeMolay Cross of Honor. He was a member of the Peck American Legion, where he served as Jr. and Sr. Vice Commander. Bob enjoyed hunting, reading, cooking, traveling, pets and most of all, his family. BRENT H. PERRY CROSWELL Brent H. Perry, age 48, a resident of Croswell, passed away very unexpectedly on Friday, August 21, 2009 at the Port Huron Hospital. He was born October 8, 1960 in Croswell, the son of Robert and Janet (VanCamp) Perry. Brent married Michelle S. Bailey on June 16, 1984 in Lexington. Brent was active in the family business, Perry Sales. He helped manage and operate both Buel Hill Estates and Country Hill Pines Estates. Brent was a beloved husband, father, son and brother. His family was very important to him and he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Michelle Perry of Croswell; two sons, Edwin Perry of Chicago and Benjamin Perry of Mt. Barbara J. Edel 1934-2009 Barbara J. Edel, 75, Bad Axe, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. She was born on August 7, 1934 in Flint, daughter of the late Christian E. and Stephanie (Urbanik) Lukasavitz. She married Gerald J. Edel on September 8, 1956 in All Saints Catholic Church in Flint. Barbara graduated from Flint Junior College and Michigan State University with a B.S. in accounting and economics. She earned her Master of Arts degree from Regis University in Denver, Colo., majoring in community administration. Upon graduation from Michigan State, Barbara worked in the accounting department for Kettering University (General Motors Institute) in Flint. She took time away from the workplace to raise her six children. She was active in St. Mary's Queen of Angels Parish in Swartz Creek. The family moved to Bad Axe in 1968 when her husband accepted a store manager position with the Dibble's Stores. Barbara taught English at Sacred Heart Catholic School for three years. She was the assistant principal at the school the final year it was open (1971). Barbara was the director of the Head Start Program in Bad Axe for six years. She passed along her strong faith in God to her family. She was a true servant in many ministries at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She was the director of religious education, coordinator of pastoral ministries, director of RCIA, sang in the choir and recently taught fourth grade religious education this past year. She touched the lives of many students, when she served as a substitute teacher in schools throughout the Thumb. Barbara was active as a scout leader and band booster. She loved to play games with her grandchildren, crossword puzzles, travel to visit her family and throw festive holiday parties. She is survived by her husband, Gerald J. Edel, Bad Axe; three daughters, Susan Nosal, Colorado Springs, Colo., Laurie (Gary) Pionk, Ruth and Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Edel Stone and her fiance, Michael Zerphy, Windsor, Vt., three sons, Gerald E. (Mary) Edel, Suwanee, Ga., Paul Christian Edel and friend of the family, Brian Wilhour, Arlington, Va. and Joel (Jitka) Edel, Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Christian Lukasavitz, Detroit and Raymond (Kathy) Lucas, Ann Arbor; one sister, Jean Marie (Ron) Miscisin, Oscoda and 12 grandchildren, Breanna, Kara and Jenna Nosal, Colorado Springs, Colo., Lesley (Dan) Hellerstedt, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Eric and Ross Pionk, Ruth, Megan, Marc and Max Edel, Suwanee, Ga., Xavier and Casimir Stone and Zofia Zerphy, Windsor, Vt. Bernice L. "Bernie" Sanborn Mulliken Passed away August 25, 2009. She was born August 19, 1915 in Mecosta, Michigan to the late Nelson and Lilah (Fleck) Stephens. Bernice was a retired nurse working for Sparrow and Ingham Medical Center and was also a faithful member of Liberty Church in Grand Ledge. Her family remembers what a great cook she was and how much they loved her homemade cookies and coleslaw but for many people they will remember her quick wit and great sense of humor that kept them laughing. Beverly Joan Sleeper, age 82, of Klinger Lake passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Fairview Living Centre in Centreville. She was born Dec. 15, 1926, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Harry and Verta (Neufer) Kilbury. Beverly was a lifelong resident of Sturgis, and on Feb. 11, 1946, she married Richard J. “Dick” Sleeper in Riverside, Calif. He passed away Feb. 19, 2007. She had been employed as a secretary for many years at Parma-Tube and was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Sturgis and a life member of the Lady Elks. Surviving are a son, Richard J. “Rick” Sleeper Jr. and wife, Susan, of Klinger Lake; a daughter, Cindy Taylor and husband David of Klinger Lake; and two grandsons, Christopher and Thomas Taylor, both of Klinger Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband;  and a brother, Kenneth Kilbury. Doris E. Ryan, 88, lifelong Reading resident, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Bryan Care &  Rehabilitation Center in Bryan, Ohio.  Born Feb. 8, 1921, in Reading, she was the daughter of Joe and Lydia (Ransford) Poats.  Doris was a devoted homemaker and retired pastor’s wife.  She was a member of the Camden Missionary Church and taught Sunday school for many years. On May 30, 1942 she married Harry Ryan, and he preceded her in death in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Sharla (Keith) Massie, Fayette, Ohio; a son, David (Chris) Ryan, Muncie, Ind.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; self-appointed daughter, Rose Miller, Fayette, Ohio and self-appointed granddaughter, Tiffany Van Auken, Reading. In addition to her husband (the Rev. Harry Ryan), she was also preceded in death by a daughter (Janet Lynn Ryan), a sister and a brother. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Camden Missionary Church, with interment following in Maplewood Cemetery, Reading. Visitation is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Reading.  Memorials to the Parkinson’s Foundation or Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation would be appreciated. |

Ernest M. Schmidt Delta Twp. Age 87, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Ernest was born October 2, 1921, in Lansing, Michigan the son of Emil and Hermina (Heinz) Schmidt. Ernest was a W.W.II Navy veteran serving 8 years in the South Pacific Fleet. He retired from General Motors plant engineering in 1978 after 30 years of service. A loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend will be dearly missed by all. Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Rudy and George Schmidt and sister, Alma Rosendahl. Ethel was born to William Keener and Esther May (Hunter) Goodman on Feb. 4, 1934 in Martin, Kent. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. She is survived by two daughters; Sharon (Jimmie) Necessary of Coldwater and Bessie (Paul) Palik of Tekonsha, sister, Bobbie (Jerry) Johnson, brother William (Marge) Goodman, all of Kentucky, 14 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was her husband, Eugene Halbert, two sons, Larry Eugene Halbert, Sr. and Virgil Curtis Halbert, Sr., two daughters, Bonnie Lou Osborne and Rita Sue Slone and two granddaughters, Mickie Diane Pearson and Rebecca Renee Necessary. Ethel D. Kinne Ethel D. Kinne, age 84, of St. Clair Shores, Mich. passed away on her birthday, August 24, 2009. Born in Detroit, Mich., she was the daughter of Edwin and Dora Knight. She married John T. Kinne of Asbury Park, NJ in 1950, who passed away prematurely in 1989. She is survived by her children, John (Lisa) Kinne, Norman Kinne, Gloria Kinne and Ronald (Pat) Kinne and eight grandchildren who cherish lifelong memories of her devotion and love. During many years Ethel enjoyed helping Gloria build her gift shop business in St. Clair Shores, Circare, into one of the premier shipping locations in the greater Detroit area. Evelyn J. (Curtis) Rehn Mason Age 78, met our Lord August 22, 2009; born May 15, 1931 in Mason to William E.B. and Thelma Irene (Culver) Smith. She fought and braved a long battle of multiple cancers. Evelyn (Evy) attended the Pink School in Mason, MI and graduated from Mason High School in 1949. She worked 30 years for the USDA. Evelyn loved our Lord and her church family, Community Freedom Church of Leslie. Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Rehn; sister, Ninebelle Evert; brothers Clyde Smith, Stanley Smith, Willis Smith, and Harold Smith. Surviving are her loving family; 3 sons Samuel Curtis (Rose) of Dansville, Peter Curtis (Kalene) of Mason, and Frederick Curtis (Jane) of Coeur'd Alene, ID; granddaughters, Cassandra Curtis, Liberty Curtis, Mandy Martin, Lisa (Jeremy) Martinez, Sara and Krista Curtis; grandsons, Joshua, Thomas, Lance and Joe Curtis; great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Betty Simmons of Yuma, AZ and Shirley (Jack) Ciucci of Mason; and several nieces and nephews. Frances C. Hall Frances C. Hall, age 96, of Mount Clemens, passed away on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2009 in Lakepointe Senior Care Center in Clinton Township. She was born on December 2, 1912 in New Haven, Michigan, the daughter of the late Martin and Clara (Kandt) Hall Sr. Frances had moved to Mount Clemens as a child. Fran had worked as a receptionist at a dentist office and retired in 1961. She was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Clinton Township. Miss Hall is survived by her brother, Martin (Jeanne) Hall Jr. of South Carolina; three cousins, Florence Pipe, Lorraine Leonardson, Ruth Gutowski, her niece, Mary Jo Golebiewski and her special friend and caregiver, Cindy Shoemaker. Frances was predeceased by her nephew, John Hall. Frances Snyder, age 91, of Clinton died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on July 8, 1918, in Lavelle, Pa., the daughter of Rudolph and Sophronie Lexo. She was united in marriage to Franklin I. Snyder on March 23, 1940, and he preceded her in death on June 12, 2003. Frances was a devoted servant to the Lord and faithful Christian who was a member of the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Tecumseh and also the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Westland. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing and playing games with her family. Frances was very family oriented and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her son, Robert (Carol) Snyder of Flushing, Mich.; her three daughters, Marilyn (Jeff) Trimble of Tecumseh, Marjorie (John) Ross of Wayne, Mich., and Linda Nortley of Clinton; one sister-in-law, Althea Lexo of Coopersburg, Pa.; 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and her infant twin sister. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Clinton Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes. Georgia was a florist, owning her own business and was a cook for Perry High School. She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, home building and working on cars. She was a member of the Brownies and Girl Scouts. She is survived by her children: Chari (David) Smith, Georgia Rosann (Patrick) Sinke, Tana (Scott) Lloyd, step children: Cathy (Robert) Sneed and Linda Wildrick. Harold F. "Sonny" Bauer 1950-2009 Harold F. "Sonny" Bauer, 59, died Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born July 19, 1950 in Unionville, son of the late Harold F. and Ella (Mall) Sr. He was married to Patricia A. Gremel on July 23, 1978 in San Diego, Calif. He was a 1968 graduate of Unionville High School and attended Delta College, University Center. Sonny had been employed as a production worker at Regency in Ubly for several years before retiring five years ago due to disability. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force of which two of them were in Thailand. He was an excellent wood worker. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, Sebewaing; two sons, Eric Bauer, Sebewaing and Kelly Bauer (Courtney Fritz), Pigeon; two brothers, Paul (Lennda) Bauer, Ramona, Calif. and Dennis (Debra) Bauer, Albuquerque, NM; three sisters, Connie (Jim) Grant, Clio; Robin (Kent) Bach, Bay Port and Nona (Pat) Foley, Saginaw; one grandson, London Michale Bauer, Pigeon and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Jackie Molden and Diane Weber and one brother, Richard Bauer. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, of 63 years; children, Barbara Huizenga of Holland, Linda and Lee Klamer of Hudsonville, Dave and Sandy Huizenga of Holland, Mary and Jack Des Armo of Allegan, and Dale and Loree Huizenga of Norton Shores; grandchildren, Zach Huizenga, Nathan Huizenga, Dirk and Nichole Van Bruggen, Josh Van Bruggen, and Paige Graves; in-laws, Arthur and Sandy Vander Kolk and Harry and Donna Vander Kolk of Hamilton, and Barb Vander Kolk of Holland; and several nephews and nieces. Irvin J. Harris 1921-2009 Irvin J. Harris, 87, Caseville, died Monday, August 17, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City after a long illness. He was born September 5, 1921 in Pinson Fork, Ky. to the late Robert and Oma (Smith) Harris. He grew up and attended school in McVeigh, Ky. before moving to Michigan in 1949. On August 18, 1951 he married Virginia Webb in Detroit. They moved to Hazel Park and raised their family there. Irvin retired from the City of Troy Engineering Dept. in 1983. In 1989 they moved to Caseville. He was a member of the Caseville Eagles FOE #3690 and the Hazel Park Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Jenny; children, Bobbie (Brian) Koczak, Hadley, Rosemary (Rob) Edwards, Metamora, Linda (E.Jay) Ferguson, Dryden, John (Gina), Lennon and Jody (Sharon), Clinton Twp; grandchildren, Robert, Tina, Candice, Patrick, Jay, Elesha, Kyle and Adam; great-grandchildren, Joslyn and Landon; brother Roby (Carol), Fowlerville and sisters, Bea Bostic, Ariz., Dolly Smith and Imogene (Wilson) Anderson, both of Ohio. JUDITH ANN VENCEL WATERTOWN TOWNSHIP Judith A. Vencel, age 70, of Watertown Township, Michigan, passed away on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 in the afternoon at McKenzie Memorial Hospital in Sandusky. She was born on November 26, 1938 in Wyandotte, Michigan, the daughter of the late Steven and Julia (Henry) Vencel. She had lived in Adair, Michigan and for the past seven years in Watertown. Judy graduated from Anchor Bay High School in 1955, and received her Associate Degree from Port Huron Junior College in 1957. In 1959, she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Detroit and a Masters Degree in Library Science from Wayne State University in 1967. She began her career as a middle school teacher for the L Anse Creuse Public School System in 1959. Judy then became a media specialist at L Anse Creuse High School retiring from L Anse Creuse Middle School North in 1994. Judy was an avid traveler, having visited China, Spain, Panama, Hungary, Hawaii, South America,England and one summer drove to Alaska. She enjoyed classic movies, scrap-booking, Star Trek re-runs and going to yard sales. Judy was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend, and she will be deeply missed. Judy is survived by her children, Christine L. (James Portilla) Cambridge and James V. (Rebecca) Cambridge and four grandchildren, James M. Portilla, Christian A. Portilla, Joshua Z. Jerry Lee Jarrard Jerry Lee Jarrard, age 70, died on Thursday, August 20, 2009 after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Cherokee, Iowa; Jerry later attended the University of Iowa, where he met his wife, Elizabeth. A keen genealogist and local historian of some note, Jerry was a teacher at Roseville High School for many years. He is survived by his older sister, his wife of 46 years, his daughter, three sons, and three grandchildren. Julia “Julie” Tobin lost her courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009.  Julie was born on March 19, 1947, in Hillsdale to Helen and Burdett Hukill. Julie grew up on a farm near Camden and attended Frontier School where she graduated in 1965. She went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1970 having majored in elementary education.  Julie taught school in Garden City for nine years.  She married Kyle Tobin on May 12, 1979.  Julie and Kyle made their home in Tawas City where Julie taught school for the next 27 1/2 years.  She was a marvelous and dedicated educator and will be remembered by many colleagues and former students for her kindness, sense of humor, generosity and her gentle ways. Julie enjoyed many things in life but her greatest joy was being a mom.  She adored her two sons Josh and Mike.  She was a wonderful and caring mother and took such pride in seeing her boys grow into fine young men. Julie is survived by her husband Kyle (of 30 years) and two sons Joshua Tobin and wife Cathie of Ladysmith, Va. and Michael Tobin of Alma.  Julie recently became a proud grandmother and on Aug. 5 got  to hold her first grandchild, little Grant Joshua. She is also survived by mother Helen Cronk Hukill, sister Becky Hukill Mallar and husband Charlie of North Conway, N.H., brothers Bob Hukill and wife Carol of Camden and Brad Hukill and wife Debbie of Reading.  Julie is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by son Steven and her father Burdett. Kent A. Eshelman, 24, of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, in Rollin Twp., Lenawee County, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  He was born May 17, 1985, in Wyandotte to Kevin Eshelman and Prapai Ringenberg.  Kent was married April 25, 2008, to Amanda Boulanger. Kent was an employee of Bob Evans Farms in Hillsdale.  He attended the Onsted school system and was a graduate of Columbia Central High School in Brooklyn.  Kent was attending Jackson Community College.  He was a member of the Michigan National Guard Association and recently returned from a tour in Iraq.  Kent enjoyed spending time with his family hunting, fishing and riding ORVs.  He was a fun-loving person who had many friends. Larry D. Fellows, 49, of Waldron, Mich., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1959, in Gary, Ind., the son of Landon Duane and Nancy Sue (Goodrich) Fellows. He married Tammy Metcalf on Feb. 14, 2008, in Hillsdale, Mich., and she survives. Larry was a self-employed milk hauler for more than 32 years and owner of Fellows Trucking in Waldron. He graduated from Waldron High School Class of 1978, was a member of Michigan Milk Haulers Association and enjoyed collecting toy tractors and semis. He dearly loved his family and will be greatly missed by all. Surviving Larry, besides his wife, Tammy, are one daughter, Dawn Fellows of Coldwater; one son, Bert (Cindy) Fellows of Pittsford; three stepchildren, Crystal Rau of Catawba, Ohio, Cory Rau of Waldron and John (Crystal) Rau of Waldron; two sisters, Lesta Preston of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Priscilla Fellows of Phoenix, Ariz.; one brother, Jim (Ann) Fellows of Waldron; several nieces and nephews. Lucille  L.  Thieme, 99, of Coldwater and formerly of Fort Wayne, Ind. died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 at Masonville House in Coldwater. She was born Nov. 12, 1909 in Allen County, Ft. Wayne, Ind. to Jacob A. and Minnie (Arnold) Slifer. She  married Arthur F.C. Thieme. He preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1992. Lucille was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Coldwater. She was born November 6, 1935 in Croswell, the daughter of the late John & Blanche (Hykes) Garbutt. She married Eugene Farley on September 26, 1953 in Lexington Township. Jean was a member of Lexington United Methodist Church. "Peggy" Bayer, Sebewaing, 60, died unexpectedly Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City from complications following surgery. She was born April 23, 1949 in Bad Axe, daughter of Anna T. (Ney) Kling and the late Samuel Kling. Peggy was a 1968 graduate of Bad Axe High School. She then attended St. Clair Community College and later graduated from Ferris State University with her Registered Nurse degree. She was a dedicated OR Nurse at Huron Memorial Hospital in Bad Axe for many years. She was an avid golfer, enjoyed country line dancing and loved spending time with her three Maltese dogs that she had for many years. Maria E. Alegria 1916-2009 Maria E. Alegria, 92, Akron, passed away Monday afternoon, August 17, 2009. She was born in Eagle Pass., Texas on October 4, 1916, daughter of Tomas and Jesusa (Gonzales) Lombrano. On May of 1931 she married Alex Alegria in Texas. He has preceded her in death. Maria was fond of gardening, country music and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children, Frank (Becky) Alegria, Arthur (Linda) Alegria and Sonny Alegria, Clara Ackerman, Blanche Arellano, Oriole Alegria, Helen (Andy) Davila, Rose (Ernie) Edwards, Linda (Bill) Gainforth and Jane Alegria; 50 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers; sisters; a son, Alex Jr. in August of 2008, son-in-law, Melvin Ackerman in July of 2002, granddaughters, Angela and Linda Davila in January of 1996 and a nephew, Ackerman in 1981. Marjorie C. Miller, 61, of St. Joe River Road, Mottville Township, White Pigeon, died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo after a short illness. She was born Nov. 3, 1947, in Elkhart, Ind., a daughter of Donald and Marjorie (Mayes) Belt. She was a Mottville-area resident most of her life, coming from Elkhart as a child. She was a waitress at Barczak’s Restaurant in Mottville for 26 years. She enjoyed gardening and baking. She was a member of the Women of the Moose, American Legion Auxiliary and Sisterhood of the Breast Cancer Society. Surviving are her life partner, Gary M. Town Sr. of Mottville; two daughters, Marjorie K. (Todd) Rosenbaum of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Tamara L. (Brandon) Wadley of Union City; and five grandchildren, Chloe Love and Paris Rosenbaum, Devon Digiacomo, and Camille and Xavier Wadley. She was preceded in death by her parents;  a son, Jonathan R. Miller; and a brother, Donald Belt. Visitation was Sunday at Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon. Martha Winifred Bullock, age 86‚ of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born in New Kensington, Pa., on April 9, 1923, a daughter of Laney and Jerusha (Greer) Lewis. Martha graduated from New Kensington High School in 1941 and later received her master’s degree in elementary education from Kent State University. She remained an active member of Delta Sigma Theta. Martha worked as an elementary teacher at Mayfair Elementary in East Cleveland, retiring in 1988 after many years of service. She previously worked at Job Corps in Cleveland and was also a civilian contractor for the Air Force. Martha was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational United Church of Christ in Cleveland, where she served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and served on many committees over the years.‚ Surviving are her son, Timothy (Sherry) Bullock of Sturgis; grandchildren, Cameron Bullock, Timothy Sean Bullock, Morgan Bullock, Michael McGee, Jessica Snyder and Carie Snyder; sisters, Geraldine Bennet and Olive Raullerson; brothers, George Lewis and Dennis Lewis; and many nieces and nephews. Mary Elizabeth Butchart, age 53, of Adrian passed away under the loving care of her family, Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 12, 1956, in Adrian, to William Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Kramer) Butchart. Mary was a beautician for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish. Max Brandeberry, 85, formerly of Jerome, Mich., passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the State Veterans Home in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Williams County, Ohio, the son of Earl and Faye (Esterline) Brandeberry. He married Donna Vee Stafford on Feb. 27, 1946, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on July 28, 2003. Max retired as Plant Manager from Risdon Dairy in Detroit, Mich., and also was employed as Distribution Manager for Domino’s Pizza in Detroit and Branch Manager for Thompson Savings Bank in Manitou Beach. He moved to the Jerome area in 1960 and spent his winters in the Lakeland, Fla., area. He was President of the Kings & Queens Homeowners Association in Florida, a member of the Lions Club in Michigan and Florida, and the Waldron Wesleyan Church He was a volunteer for Jackson City Library and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving Max are two daughters, Debra (Steve) Svinicki of Rio Verde, Ariz., and Marsha (Mike) Wesolowski of Bothell, Wash.; one son, Larry (Karen) Brandeberry of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Misty, Shilow, Shelby, Ray, Mallory, Marc and Cody; two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother, Carmen Brandeberry. Memorial services for Max will be Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson, Mich., with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Nancy A. Wiegand Nancy A. Wiegand, age 74, of Cadillac formerly of Utica died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She was born in Detroit on July 22, 1935 to Clarence and Mary (Doty) Harding. Nancy had been employed as a School Bus Driver for the Utica Public School system for over 15 years and retired in 1991 to Lincoln, Michigan and to Cadillac permanently a year ago. She enjoyed watching wildlife, traveling, fishing and hunting. On April 30, 1960 in Livonia she married Thomas A. Wiegand and he survives along with their children: Michael (Cindy) Wiegand of Dearborn and Michelle Wiegand of Cadillac; grandchildren: Sarah and Matthew Wiegand. She was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather, Charles DeBuck. A private memorial gathering will be held in Warren, Michigan at a later date. Priscilla M. McElmurry, 88, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, at her daughter’s home. She was born on Aug 7, 1920, in the Chicago area, the daughter of James and Priscilla Gibb of Lansing. On Aug. 17, 1940, she married Daryl McElmurry. Priscillla was preceded in death by her son, Daryl Gibb McElmurry, her husband Daryl H. McElmurry and her grandaughter Daryl K. McElmurry. Her surviving children are Thomas McElmurry (Denise) of Texas, Priscilla Young (Ken) of Livonia, Melissa Rippee of Jackson and her daughter-in-law Phyillis McElmurry. She was fortunate to have nine granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Priscilla loved gardening, sewing, needlepoint, reading, golf and the quiet of the countryside. A memorial service was held at her home where her loving presence was felt by all. We all miss her.   |

Following graduation he went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944 to 1946. Robert married Beverly (Blazier) Chaffin, April of 1955, she passed away January 2007. He then married June Robison, September of 1983, she died June of 1984. He then married Geraldine Kirk, January of 1994, she preceded him in death in October of 2000. He was a member of Cass City & Watertown Missionary Church. He worked as a Electronic Technician for Long's Furniture Store for 20 years and also worked at Guerdon Industries and Western Auto Store in Marlette, retiring in 1994. He enjoyed flying airplanes and model airplanes, talking on his Amature Radio, fishing, camping, working on his computer and most of all, his family. He is survived by one son, Daniel (Nina) Watson of Deford; granddaughter, Marie Watson & fianc e Frank Miller of Snover and five step daughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donald and one stepson. Funeral services were held at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with Rev. Bob Sweeney and Paul Melcher officiating. Reese Elray Olger East Lansing Reese went to be with his Heavenly Father on August 25, 2009. Reese Elray Olger was a resident of East Lansing, MI. Reese was born August 22, 1931 in Lansing, MI, son of James G. Olger and Lena Bellinger Olger. After graduation from Perry High School in 1949, he entered Flint Barber Institute and began his barbering career here in the East Lansing area. From 1953 - 1955 Reese enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the states and at Camp Zama, Japan. After his Army service he returned to barbering in East Lansing where he met and married his wife of 53 years, Rosalie Ann Eppich of East Lansing. Reese began singing Barbershop Quartet music with the Capital City Chordsman (S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A.) where he has been an active member for the past 48 years. From 1970 till 1981 Reese owned and operated the Donut Depot and Spudnut in East Lansing. He then went to work at MDOC at Jackson Prison in food service for 10 years. Reese retired from barbering this last year. For 42 years Reese was a dedicated member of Trinity Church. Reese is remembered as a loving husband and father whose endless devotion to serving others will be deeply missed. Reese is survived by his wife Rosalie and their three children Angela Olger of Lansing, Reese Olger, Jr. (Faye) of Stafford, VA , and Elyse Gates (Jeffery) of Choctaw, OK; seven grandchildren Tamara Sanchez (Jose'), Douglas & Scott Olger, Connor & Chandler Gates and Vincent & Valerie Olger; and two great- grandchildren Michael & Jose' Sanchez Jr. Reese is also survived by his sister Joyce Olger Fernholz (Herbert); sister-in-law Lorraine Olger, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother James E. Olger and sister Marjorie Olger Case. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Reese E. Richard J. Petitpren Richard J. Petitpren, age 84, of New Baltimore, died August 25, 2009 at home. Born March 29, 1925 in Ira Township, Mich. He was the manager for New Haven Farmers Elevator, retired in 1995. He served in the U.S. Army, member of Immaculate Conception Church, Ira, VFW Post 7573, enjoyed woodworking and gardening. Richard R. Lee Richard R. Lee, age 73, of Mount Clemens died Monday, August 24, 2009. He was born February 9, 1936 in Vernon, Ala. He was employed as a Chief Color Matcher in the Paint Division at DuPont, Mt. Clemens for 29 years retiring in 1993. He is survived by his wife Virgaleen (nee Earshery), children, Sharon Smith of Shelby Township, Tara "Teri" Lee and Holly Mills both of Clinton Township, Richard "Randy" Lee of Southfield; six grandchildren, Quincy, Tay, Shawntia, Korey, Amber, Tony; sisters, Shirley (Norvell) McGlaun of Mount Clemens, Cynthia Jones of Detroit, and a host of nieces and nephews. Robert L. Shemberger, 86, of White Pigeon, died Aug. 25, 2009, at his home following a short illness. He was born Jan. 16, 1923, in White Pigeon, the son of Lloyd and G. Fay (Messner) Shemberger. On June 4, 1954, he married Helen E. Steckle in Battle Creek. He served in the U.S. Army at the 7th Base Post Office in Yogohama, Japan. He was a White Pigeon resident all his life and was employed at the White Pigeon Paper Mill for 48 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the White Pigeon First Presbyterian Church, a life member and past worshipful master of the White Pigeon Lodge #104 F&AM, Siloam Lodge #35 F&AM of Constantine, a life member and past patron of the Eastern Star #210 of Three Rivers, a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks #1381 of Sturgis, and a member of the Blue-Burdick Post #4896 VFW of White Pigeon.  He enjoyed traveling, driving, reading and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Helen E. Shemberger of White Pigeon; a son, Roger (Deborah) Shemberger of Portage; granddaughter, Becca Shemberger of Portage; a grandson, Tyler Shemberger of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Shemberger; and two sisters, Mary Holsinger and Lulu Wallace. Robert E. Otis, age 71, formerly of Holland, passed away August 24, 2009, at home surrounded by his family. Robert (Bob) was born in Jersey City, NJ on January 1, 1938. He was the son of John E. and Linda H. (Walser) Otis. He graduated from Memorial High School in West New York, NJ, in 1956 and enlisted the the U.S. Army Reserve receiving an honorable discharge in 1963. He married Barbara Ann (Bonnie) McGregor of Rowayton, CT, on June 30, 1962 at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Norwalk, CT. Together they raised three children. Bob graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey in 1969 with a degree in business management and began a career in personnel management. His career created moves for the family to many states across the country finally settling in Holland in 1978 where he was employed by Hart & Cooley. In 1985 he started work for the Holland Hitch Company and retired as Vice-President of Human Resources in 2001. He was a devoted father and husband. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Bonnie; son, Robert and Kathy Otis of Zeeland; daughter, Ann and Randy Holkeboer of Holland; son, James and Sara Otis of Santa Cruz, CA; four grandchildren, Cari, Nolan and Matthew Otis, and Julia Raffenaud. He is also survived by two brothers, John (Carolyn) of East Orleans, MA, Walter (Patricia) of Katonah, NY; and a sister, Linda Peretti (Frank) of Hillsborough, NJ, along with many nieces and nephews. After his retirement, Bob and Bonnie moved from Holland to their Hamlin Lake cottage. Bob enjoyed traveling, working in his “grandpa’s fix-it  shop” and making wooden boat models. His greatest enjoyment was hosting his family and grandchildren at their home on Hamlin Lake in Ludington and their oceanfront cottage in Pemaquid Harbor, ME. A special thanks to Dr. Carol Peterson and the staff at the West Michigan Regional Cancer and Blood Center in Freesoil for all the loving care they gave to Bob and his family. A private memorial service for family and friends will be in Holland at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Oak Grove Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Ludington. Tracy Parker Smith Lansing It all began on December 11, 1962, in Harlem, New York, where Tracy Ann Parker was born to Victoria Parker. At the age of 25 Tracy gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Nigeria, at Bellevue Hospital, to turn around and give birth to one of her sons, Andrew, on the sofa at her mom's house 3 years later. At the age of 29 Tracy moved to Lansing, Michigan, to change her life around and worked as a certified nurse aid to take care of her family. As life went on, Tracy and her husband, Andrew T. Smith, had 3 more children, William, Spencer and Brandon. On August 24th, 2009, Tracy left the world to be with the Lord at 10:54 a.m. She was preceded in death by her mom, 2 brothers, and a sister. William H. "Bill" Petry, II Lansing Age 68, passed away unexpectedly August 25, 2009. Born November 21, 1940 in Mount Vernon, Ohio. Bill received his Bachelors degree in mathematics from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, OH, and his Masters degree in mathematics from Boston College. Bill was a Professor of Mathematics at Lansing Community College for 36 years. His door was always open and he went above and beyond to extend his help and give every student the best chance for success. Bill was a tireless advocate for peace and social justice dating back to his participation in the Civil Rights movement in Atlanta, GA. He spent four years teaching in Micronesia as a member of the United Church of Christ Board Mission and volunteered for Crossroads Africa, teaching for two summers in Ethiopia and Kenya. Bill was a member of the Michigan Peace Team; Peace Education Center; the Lansing chapter of the United Nations Association; and the People for Positive Social Change. He also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. He truly touched the lives of thousands of people through his giving spirit and constant generosity. Bill believed that each of us has the power and responsibility to create a better world-and this unwavering, passionate commitment carried through in his teaching, his social activism and in everything he did. He loved the outdoors and was an avid cyclist, spending many summer days biking around Michigan and beyond. He also sang in the MSU Choral Union. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Faith C. & William H. Petry, II, and his brother, Dwayne Petry. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Julia M. (Rahib) Petry; his son and daughter-in-law, Hisham and Lee Anne Petry. He extended warmth and caring to everyone he met and will be deeply missed by family, friends and colleagues both here and overseas. The cause of death was metastatic prostate cancer, according to his daughter, Susan Ylvisaker (Gordon). Dr. Ylvisaker brought a unique focus to the practice of medicine. |

Affectionately known as “The Chicken Lady,” Evelyn Alice Nuffer, age 73, of Three Rivers, died Sunday Aug. 23, 2009, following a brief illness.  She was born in Palmer, Alaska, on June 28, 1936, a daughter John and Alice (DeGroat) Porter. Generations have benefited from her volunteer work and generosity as a 4-H Leader.  She has assisted many children at the St. Joseph County Grange Fair in properly caring for and training their poultry.  The Chicken Lady loved spending time with the kids at the fair, donated many trophies and purchased numerous show birds at the auction.  She was recently recognized by the Michigan Poultry Fanciers with a plaque for her efforts. She was also trained as a licensed poultry inspector by the state of Michigan.  The Chicken Lady also volunteered caring for the birds at Scidmore Park in Three Rivers. She trained numerous birds to talk for local pet shops and bird lovers, sold ceramics, and delivered newspapers in the area.      The Chicken Lady is survived by her father, the Rev. John Porter and his wife, Carmen, of Three Rivers; three children, Alice Porter of Three Rivers, Ken Porter (Kelly) of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Loretta Walker of Muskegon; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Noel Porter (Ruby) of Malott, Wash., Morris Porter (Minota) of New Market, Va., and Steve Porter (Marilyn) of Cedar Lake; a sister-in-law, Judy Porter of Evart, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Porter; her twin brother, Doyle Porter; and stillborn infant twins.  A graveside service for The Chicken Lady will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in South Park Cemetery at the corner of Heimbach and Darr roads, with the Rev. Keith Phillips, pastor of the Three Rivers, Centreville, and Kalamazoo Countryside Seventh Day Adventist Churches, officiating.  Immediately following services, all are invited to the poultry barn at the St. Joseph County fairgrounds for a time of food and fellowship.
