Adam Daniel Steglich, 17, of 9020 West 750 North Shipshewana, Ind., died at 12:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at the scene of a motorcycle accident at the intersection of State Road 120 and County Road 43 Middlebury, Ind. He was born Oct. 12, 1991, in Kalamazoo, Mich., to Danny Steglich and Jeri Lucas. He had lived most of his life in this area. He had been a student in the Westview School system through last year and had completed his junior year in high school. He was currently finishing out his G.E.D. in Topeka. Adam enjoyed playing football and was a member of the Westside Football Club, Shipshewana. He had wrestled for Westview and enjoyed riding motorcycles, dirt bikes and go-karts. He also enjoyed archery and paintballing, in which he played often at Splatman Du in Michigan. Survivors include mother and step father, Jeri (Jerry) Mehrley of Shipshewana, Ind.; father, Danny Steglich of Shipshewana, Ind.; brother, Jamie Mehrley of Shipshewana, Ind.; grandparents, Daniel (Janet) Lucas of Constantine, Mich. and Robert, Sr. (Donna) Steglich of Shipshewana, Ind.; great-grandfather, Joseph Danna of Benton Harbor, Mich.; several aunts, uncles and cousins. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 South Main Street, Middlebury. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at funeral home. Burial will be in the Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury. Andrew Chronis Andrew Chronis, age 87, died August 27, 2009. Andrew was a longtime resident of St. Clair Shores and more recently Chesterfield Township. He was a member of U.A.W. Local 412 as well as Bruce Post V.F.W. 119. Beloved Husband for 62 years of the late Madeline. Andrew and Madeline enjoyed many happy times and made wonderful friends with both the St. Clair Shores Senior Cruisers and the New Baltimore Seniors Club. Andrew served in the 82nd Airborne during WWII. He was a proud DAV Member and active in the Bruce Post VFW #119. He retired from Chrysler as a maintenance supervisor. Andrew was also a dedicated member of UAW Local 412. He was the dear brother of Andrea (Dan) Stephens, Alvina (Wally) Becker, Athena (Jerry) Putnam, Pam Slot, and the late Connie, Christopher, Larry (Phyllis) and Beatrice Pettalia. Ann Marie Thompson Ann Marie (Stefani) Thompson, age 51, a lifelong resident of Macomb County, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2009. She was born July 3, 1958 in Mount Clemens, Michigan. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Mount Clemens. She is survived by her two children, Lisa (Jeffrey) Bell of Clinton Township, Jerry J. Thome of Bradenton, Florida; her father and stepmother, Martin and Sharon Stefani; mother and stepfather, Elizabeth and David Donna; grandchildren, Colin Michael, Emily Elizabeth, Samuel William and Henry Thomas. She is also survived by brothers, Martin (Pauline) Stefani, and Thomas (Teresa) Stefani; stepsiblings, Joseph (Jane) Donna, Deborah, David, Sam, Peter, Stuart, and Christopher Donna, Paula (Ron) Sorgeloss, Rose (Matt) McGovern; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by two stepbrothers, Michael and Donald Donna. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 31, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in the Harold W. Arlene McMahon, 71, of Riga passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, at her home. She was born March 22, 1938, in Blissfield, to Tim and Georgia (Gust) Brubaker. In 1956 Arlene married Raymond Barnhart of Adrian; he preceded her in death. On April 20, 1973, she married Joseph McMahon Jr. of Deerfield and he survives. Arlene was a morning manager at McDonald’s in Blissfield, where she still enjoyed working, and was also a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary in Blissfield. She is also survived by her children, Sheryl (Brad) Donbrosky of Deerfield, Charles (Connie) Barnhart of Deerfield, Stephen Barnhart of Livonia and Sandra (John) LaVoy of Palmyra; stepchildren, Jim (Bonnie) McMahon of Texas, Pat Iffland of Blissfield, Dan (Cy) McMahon of Blissfield, Jean (Bill) Goodrow of Tecumseh, Cathryn (Joe) Saylor of Blissfield, Martha (John) Tucker of Colorado, Kimberly (Don) Raper of Adrian and Joe McMahon III of Texas; along with a combined 32 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Hazel Brubaker of Blissfield, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Sheila; son-in-law, Ken; a great-grandson; and siblings Ethel Pangburn and Richard and David Brubaker. Funeral services for Arlene will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield with Fr. Francis Mossholder officiating. Burial will follow in Riga Cemetery in Riga Township. C. Fabian “Mickey” McGraw, 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at Drews Place of Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 10, 1919 in Pavo, Ga., to Hezekiah and Leila (Adams) McGraw. He was married June 17, 1950 to Lois Morr and she survives. Mickey received a Bachelor’s degreee in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was the former president of Hillsdale Tool and Union Steel Products in Albion. Mickey was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale and was a trustee emeritus of Hillsdale College having served as a board trustee from 1975 to 2003. Besides his wife, Lois, he is survived by a daughter, Karen (Houston Morrow) McGraw of Telluride, Colorado; two sons, Michael (Lynn) McGraw of St. Louis, Mo., and Matthew McGraw of Hillsdale; and four grandchildren. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. Memorial services for C. Fabian “Mickey” McGraw will be 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hillsdale with the Rev. Patti Beckman officiating. Doris E. Ryan, 88, lifelong Reading resident, passed away Saturday, August 22, 2009, at the Bryan Care &  Rehabilitation Center in Bryan, Ohio.  Born Feb. 8, 1921, in Reading, she was the daughter of Joe and Lydia (Ransford) Poats.  Doris was a devoted homemaker and retired pastor’s wife.  She was a member of the Camden Missionary Church and taught Sunday school for many years. On May 30, 1942 she married Harry Ryan, and he preceded her in death in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Sharla (Keith) Massie, Fayette, Ohio; a son, David (Chris) Ryan, Muncie, Ind.; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; self-appointed daughter, Rose Miller, Fayette, Ohio and self-appointed granddaughter, Tiffany Van Auken, Reading. In addition to her husband (the Rev. Harry Ryan), she was also preceded in death by a daughter (Janet Lynn Ryan), a sister and a brother. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Camden Missionary Church, with interment following in Maplewood Cemetery, Reading. Roth, age 73, a seven-year resident of Clinton Township, formerly of Lewiston, Mich. area, and previously from Romeo, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 at the Village Rehabilitation & Care Center in Armada. Doris was born Dec. 22, 1935 in Romeo, the daughter of George and Evelyn V. (Siegrist) Tisch. She married Donald E. "Digger" Roth on June 26, 1954 at St John Lutheran Church in Romeo and he preceded her in death on Dec. 11, 2000. When living in Clinton Township, she volunteered at the Clinton Township Public Library. Doris is survived by her daughters, Judy Cornwell of Clinton Township, Sandra (Gene) Caldwell of Romeo and Lori (Dale) Dickey of San Jose, California. Garry J. Shorter Garry J. Shorter, 67, of Erie, Colo., formerly of Mich., died August 19, 2009 in his home. Born June 28, 1942 in Mt. Clemens to Clifford and Lenore Shorter. A graduate of Mt. Clemens High School, served in the US Army, and former owner of Michigan Processing Corp. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was an active member of Warren Woods Church of the Nazarene and served as a Chaplain at Macomb Hospital. Helen was born July 22, 1930 in Detroit to John and Stella (Hyska) Dunalski. She married Albert (George) Lemanski on May 17, 1952 in Bronson. He preceded her in death on March 3, 2003. Helen attended St. Mary’s School and graduated from Bronson High School in 1949. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Assumption Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir and the Sacred Heart Society. Mary had worked at the former Rich’s Lumber and Supply in Bronson for 17 years. She was an accomplished pianist and well versed in the Polish language, helping others to translate written letters and during Polish Festival time. In addition to her husband, Helen was preceded in death by her son Todd Lemanski in October of 1985. She is survived by her son Daniel Lemanski of Galesburg. Henry William Jourdan Jr., age 78, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009. He was born Aug. 5, 1931, in Sturgis, a son to the late Henry William and Theda (Staples) Jourdan Sr.  Henry has been a resident of Sturgis all of his life and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1949. On Feb. 6, 1954, he married June Machin in Climax, Mich. He had been employed for the Kroger Company in Sturgis for 42 years.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Korea and was a member of the Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355 and the Neuman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion.  Henry was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.   Surviving are his wife of 55 years, June; one son, Alan (Rocki) Jourdan of Colon, Mich.; two daughters, Cindy (Chris) Campbell of Colon, and Connie (Mark) Greenwald of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; three grandchildren, Cheyenne Campbell, Hunter Jourdan, and Robert Alan Jourdan; three brothers, Earl Jourdan of Colon, James Jourdan of Sturgis, and Clarence “Lee” Jourdan of Sturgis; four sisters, Betty (Norman) Vanpelt of Sturgis, Brenda (Max) Sayles of Avilla, Ind., Judy Taylor of Goshen, Ind., and Suzanne (Gerald) Daniels of Cadillac, Mich. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, William Henry Jourdan in 1989, and a brother, William Terry Jourdan. Irma Marie Hunsdorfer Irma Marie (Geninatti) Hunsdorfer, age 82, formerly of St. Clair Shores, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Rochester, Michigan. Mrs. Hunsdorfer was born April 10, 1927 in Detroit. She was a retired secretary who worked in the Detroit Public School system and the Lake Shore School system. She retired from Kennedy School in St. Clair Shores in 1988 and enjoyed lasting friendships with her former coworkers. She also loved gardening, sewing, and was a wonderful cook. She was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church in St. Clair Shores, and a more recent member of St. John Lutheran Church in Rochester. Mrs. Hunsdorfer is survived by her daughter, Lynne (Norman) Fugate; her grandchildren, Gregory (Allyson) Fugate, and Geoffry (Kim) Fugate; her great-grandchildren, Graham and Landon Fugate. Also surviving are her sisters-in-law, Lillian (Raymond) Sandner and Elaine Moschino; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, in 2004. Visitation will take place on Monday from 3-9 p.m. at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores. Services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the funeral home. Jane N. Leifheit Grand Ledge Born January 3, 1913 in Detroit, Michigan, Jane was called home to the Lord on August 27, 2009 at the age of 96. 'Grandma Jane' devoted her life to every generation of her family, filling their lives with love and laughter. Julia “Julie” Tobin lost her courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009.  Julie was born on March 19, 1947, in Hillsdale to Helen and Burdett Hukill. Julie grew up on a farm near Camden and attended Frontier School where she graduated in 1965. She went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1970 having majored in elementary education.  Julie taught school in Garden City for nine years.  She married Kyle Tobin on May 12, 1979.  Julie and Kyle made their home in Tawas City where Julie taught school for the next 27 1/2 years.  She was a marvelous and dedicated educator and will be remembered by many colleagues and former students for her kindness, sense of humor, generosity and her gentle ways. Julie enjoyed many things in life but her greatest joy was being a mom.  She adored her two sons Josh and Mike.  She was a wonderful and caring mother and took such pride in seeing her boys grow into fine young men. Julie is survived by her husband Kyle (of 30 years) and two sons Joshua Tobin and wife Cathie of Ladysmith, Va. and Michael Tobin of Alma.  Julie recently became a proud grandmother and on Aug. 5 got  to hold her first grandchild, little Grant Joshua. She is also survived by mother Helen Cronk Hukill, sister Becky Hukill Mallar and husband Charlie of North Conway, N.H., brothers Bob Hukill and wife Carol of Camden and Brad Hukill and wife Debbie of Reading.  Julie is also survived by several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by son Steven and her father Burdett. Funeral services for Julie Tobin are 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23 at VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Louis Lark Kenneth Louis Lark of Warren, Michigan died on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the age of 79. Mr. Lark was born in Hamtramck on March 7, 1930, the son of the late Mr. Louis Lark and Mrs. Helen Lark. Mr. Lark graduated from Saint Florian High School and then proudly enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952 where he saw extensive action in the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge, he was employed as a U.S. Postal Letter Carrier for over 38 years. Mr. Lark married his beloved Doreen Sanco in 1956. They spent 50 years together and raised three sons. Mr. Lark was an excellent athlete and coach. He earned a tryout with the Chicago Cubs and was a competitive boxer and softball player. He was a member of teams from local Knights of Columbus Councils and local senior leagues. "Coach Kenny" was always a popular and in-demand youth baseball and hockey coach, teaching players the fundamentals and treating them all fairly. Mr. Lark was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Predeceased by his wife, Doreen, he is survived by his son Kenneth Lark and his wife Maurita, of Houston, Texas, and their sons Kenneth Lark of Austin, Texas and Gregory Lark of Houston; son Kerry Lark and his wife Kristen, and their daughters Annika and Robyn, all of Royal Oak; and son Steven Lark and his wife Peggy of Essexville. Mr. Lark is also survived by his sister, Evelyn Stewart of Georgia. A faithful Roman Catholic, Mr. Lark was a proud member of the K of C and St. Cletus parish. Eshelman, 24, of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, in Rollin Twp., Lenawee County, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  He was born May 17, 1985, in Wyandotte to Kevin Eshelman and Prapai Ringenberg.  Kent was married April 25, 2008, to Amanda Boulanger. Kent was an employee of Bob Evans Farms in Hillsdale.  He attended the Onsted school system and was a graduate of Columbia Central High School in Brooklyn.  Kent was attending Jackson Community College.  He was a member of the Michigan National Guard Association and recently returned from a tour in Iraq.  Kent enjoyed spending time with his family hunting, fishing and riding ORVs.  He was a fun-loving person who had many friends. Larry D. Fellows, 49, of Waldron, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1959, in Gary, Ind., the son of Landon Duane and Nancy Sue (Goodrich) Fellows. He married Tammy Metcalf on Feb. 14, 2008, in Hillsdale, and she survives. Larry was a self-employed milk hauler for more than 32 years and owner of Fellows Trucking in Waldron. He graduated from Waldron High School Class of 1978, was a member of Michigan Milk Haulers Association and enjoyed collecting toy tractors and semis. He dearly loved his family and will be greatly missed by all. Surviving Larry besides his wife, Tammy, are a daughter, Dawn Fellows of Coldwater; one son, Bert (Cindy) Fellows of Pittsford; three step-children, Crystal Rau of Catawba, Ohio; Cory Rau of Waldron and John (Crystal) Rau of Waldron; two sisters, Lesta Preston of Ann Arbor and Priscilla Fellows of Phoenix; one brother, Jim (Ann) Fellows of Waldron; several nieces and nephews. Martha Winifred Bullock, age 86‚ of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, passed away Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born in New Kensington, Pa., on April 9, 1923, a daughter of Laney and Jerusha (Greer) Lewis. Martha graduated from New Kensington High School in 1941 and later received her master’s degree in elementary education from Kent State University. She remained an active member of Delta Sigma Theta. Martha worked as an elementary teacher at Mayfair Elementary in East Cleveland, retiring in 1988 after many years of service. She previously worked at Job Corps in Cleveland and was also a civilian contractor for the Air Force. Martha was a member of Mt. Zion Congregational United Church of Christ in Cleveland, where she served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and served on many committees over the years.‚ Surviving are her son, Timothy (Sherry) Bullock of Sturgis; grandchildren, Cameron Bullock, Timothy Sean Bullock, Morgan Bullock, Michael McGee, Jessica Snyder and Carie Snyder; sisters, Geraldine Bennet and Olive Raullerson; brothers, George Lewis and Dennis Lewis; and many nieces and nephews. Mary C. Sobeske, 90, of Coldwater,  died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Coldwater with  Rev. Fr. Dan Doctor officiating. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bronson. Visitation will be held Sunday, Aug. 30, from 3-6 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 5:30 p.m., at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Mary was born Sept. 8, 1918 in Chicago, Ill. to Anthony and Angeline (Wagner) Killian. She married Victor Sobeske on May 17, 1938 in Bronson. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1980. Mary has spent most of her life in Branch County. She was a wife, mother and homemaker and helped on the family farm for many years. She was an active member of St. Charles Borromeo Church, where she helped with bingo. Mrs. Sobeske enjoyed cooking and was known for her talent when it came to making Polish food. She volunteered her skills for many years and was active with preparations for the Polish Festival and also at the 4-H Parents Eat Stand at the fair. Mary enjoyed gardening and playing cards with family and friends, but most of all she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Mary is survived by her daughters Betty (Marvin) Malovey of Coldwater, Margaret Wiseman of Ft. Wayne (Bradley Mullins of Urbana, Ohio), Jacqueline (Ronald) Miller of Tipp City, Ohio, her brother Richard (Evon) Killian of Baldwin, her sisters Sophie Kruszka and Frances Yesh, both of Coldwater, Mildred McManus of Wasilla, Alaska, three grandchildren Kris Wurst of Ft. Wayne, Kim (Brett) Brumet of Carmel, Ind., Scott Wiseman of Ft. Wayne, four great grandchildren Erica and Amanda Wurst and Kayla and Drew Brumet. Mary Elizabeth Butchart, age 53, of Adrian passed away under the loving care of her family, Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at her home, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 12, 1956, in Adrian, to William Richard and Mary Elizabeth (Kramer) Butchart. Mary was a beautician for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish. She enjoyed doing craft projects, decorating and flower gardening.  Mary is survived by five brothers, Bill Butchart and his wife, Pat, of Adrian, Gerry Butchart and his wife, Judy, of Adrian, Bob Butchart of Florida, Mick Butchart and his wife, Linda, of Adrian and Ron Butchart and his wife, Nancy, of Adrian; one sister, Barb Gartee and her husband, Chuck, of Adrian; and many nieces and nephews, including a special angel niece, Sheila. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Kay, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy. Mary M. Holmes, age 87, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village. She was born Sept. 6, 1921, in Connersville, Ind., a daughter to the late William Walter and Bessie Viola (York) Oldham. In 1938 she married Charles E. Kain in Liberty, Ind. This marriage ended in divorce. In Feb. of 1955 she married Robert C. Holmes in Ft. Wayne, Ind. He preceded her in death. Mary moved to Sturgis in 1957 coming from Liberty, Ind. She had been employed as a cashier and department supervisor for the Ames Dept. Store in Sturgis. She enjoyed ceramics, reading, cooking, mushroom hunting, her pets, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. Surviving are one daughter, Donna S. (Ken) Johnson of Sturgis; one son, Gary “Gus” E. (Dixie) Kain of Sturgis; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Herb Haskins of Sturgis, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Marlene Nolan; and a brother, Veryl E. Oldham. Mattie Jane Birch, age 83 of Richland and formerly of Chicago and Leonidas, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at her home in Richland. She was born Aug. 18, 1926, in Leonidas, a daughter of Karl and Ethel (Taylor) Birch. She graduated from Mendon High School, attended the Chicago Evangelistic Institute, and graduated from Vernard University in University Park, Iowa. While living in Chicago, she worked briefly as a social worker. She then went to work for Nabisco and retired in 1992 after 30 years of service. She was a member of the Oak Park Church of the Nazarene. Mattie lived for the Lord and made her faith the center of her life. She loved spending time with her family and friends and enjoyed traveling in her spare time. Mattie is survived by two brothers, Clarence Birch (Betty) of Leonidas and Ed Birch (Janice Brown) of Kalamazoo; 14 nieces and nephews, Pat Wadell (Vern), Connie Adams (Ted), Alan Birch, Dennis Birch (Sara), Lisa Stoll (Tyler), Darlene Rodgers (Vern), Debbie Modert (Lou), Diane Stauffer (Doug), Rebecca Peterson (Joel), Brent Birch, Tamara Birch-Olason (Scott), Bryan Birch, Kristen Birch, and Courtney Birch (Erlvin Chua); and a niece-in-law, Nancy Laugeman. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Karl, Clifford, and Raymond Birch; and by two nephews, Ron Laugeman and William “Butch” Birch. Max Brandeberry, 85, formerly of Jerome, Mich., passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the State Veterans Home in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Williams County, Ohio, the son of Earl and Faye (Esterline) Brandeberry. He married Donna Vee Stafford on Feb. 27, 1946, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on July 28, 2003. Max retired as Plant Manager from Risdon Dairy in Detroit, Mich., and also was employed as Distribution Manager for Domino’s Pizza in Detroit and Branch Manager for Thompson Savings Bank in Manitou Beach. He moved to the Jerome area in 1960 and spent his winters in the Lakeland, Fla., area. He was President of the Kings & Queens Homeowners Association in Florida, a member of the Lions Club in Michigan and Florida, and the Waldron Wesleyan Church He was a volunteer for Jackson City Library and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving Max are two daughters, Debra (Steve) Svinicki of Rio Verde, Ariz., and Marsha (Mike) Wesolowski of Bothell, Wash.; one son, Larry (Karen) Brandeberry of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Misty, Shilow, Shelby, Ray, Mallory, Marc and Cody; two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and one brother, Carmen Brandeberry. Memorial services for Max will be Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson, Mich., with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Olga F. Wright, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009 in Coldwater. Olga was born Dec. 18, 1916 in Detroit to Frank and Antoinette (Mshar) Cragel who emigrated from Russia. Olga married Alexander Lomik, Sr. in 1935. They had two children, Alex and Joyce. They moved their family to Brighton to raise their children in the country and owned Milo Tool & Die Mfg. Olga was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and playing bridge. Olga’s husband Alexander died in 1964, after 29 years of marriage. In 1967, Olga married Jack Wright, owner of The Canopy restaurant in Brighton. Olga and Jack owned the Canopy until the early 1980’s, when they retired to Frankfort and built their retirement home on Lake Michigan. Olga was active in the Frankfort community through a quilting club and art classes. Jack and Olga lived in Frankfort in the summer and wintered in many different southern states. After almost 30 years of marriage, Jack died in 1996. Olga then split her time between Frankfort and Coldwater, where she was a member of the Tibbits Opera House, a charter member of the Tibbits Boosters and a member of the Coldwater Garden Club. Olga was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Mike and Harry; and her son Alex Lomik on March 21, 2009. Olga is survived by her daughter, Joyce Hubbs of Coldwater; her nephews Mike and Harry and niece Peggy; six grandchildren, Alex Lomik of Port Huron, Brenda Lomik of Brighton, Frank (Connie) Lomik of Brighton, Linda Lomik of Brighton, Lara Hubbs of Clinton Township and Shana (David) Grife of Coldwater; nine great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ryan, Ashley, Sarah, Laura, Alyssa, Emma, Meredith and Madelynn; and three great-great grandchildren, Valerie, Noah and Joel. Philip F. Lange, MD Beaver Island Philip F. Lange, MD, formerly of Lansing, age 84, died June 13, 2009, surrounded by his family at the Hiland Cottage Hospice in Petoskey. Philip was born January 12, 1925, in Detroit, the son of Herbert and Edna (Wiedenmiller) Lange. He was raised in Saginaw and Detroit, and completed his pre-medical training at Albion College, where he was President of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity from 1943-1944. Philip was married in August of 1947, to Ethel Belle (Dean), and received his M.D. degree from Wayne University College of Medicine, Detroit - 1948, where he was President of Phi Rho Sigma Fraternity. Philip Interned at St. Lawrence Hospital in Lansing, 1948-1949, and had his General Residency there, 1949-1950. A Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Philip started his Lansing practice in July of 1950, until drafted into the Army in January 1951. He served with the rank of Captain in the US Army Medical Corps, 23rd Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, for 13 months in Korea, through November 1952. His distinguished service as Battalion Surgeon for the 3rd Battalion during his first 6 months, and later as Regimental Surgeon spanned the Heartbreak Ridge, Baldy and Pork Chop battles. For his service, Philip received the Combat Medic Badge, Bronze Star, Bronze Star with V for Valor, and from a nearby French Battalion, the Croix DeGuerre. From January 1953 through June 1987, Philip dedicated himself to the patients of his private practice and to the broader medical community. Service to patients, profession and community was a hallmark of his commitment and caring life. Philip was: Chief of Staff, E W Sparrow and Ingham Medical Hospitals, as well as having many committee memberships and chairmanships in both hospitals; President, Capital Chapter, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians; MAFP Treasurer and served 8 years on the Board, and as chairman or member of many committees of the MAFP and Michigan State Medical Society; President, Ingham County Medical Society; Chairman, Michigan State Medicaid Peer Review Committee; Associate Clinical Professor at MSU College of Human Medicine and taught medical students from MSU, U of M and Wayne State University for over 18 years; a staff member at Ingham Medical, Lansing General, E W Sparrow and St. Lawrence Hospitals; and a faculty member for 2 years with the Sparrow Family Practice Residency. Philip "retired" to Beaver Island June 30, 1987, where his community involvement continued. In addition to being relief caregiver for 2 years, he provided full-time medical coverage when the Island's usual provider was called to serve in the Gulf War. He was: President, Beaver Island Historical Society and the Beaver Island Medical Center Board; Treasurer, Beaver Island Christian Church; and Vice President, Preservation Association of Beaver Island. Philip enjoyed his family, gardening, cooking, food preservation, Beaver Island, painting, hunting, fishing, wine making and skiing. He is survived by Ethel Belle, his loving wife of 61 years; his sister, Lois (Phil) Gannon; sons, Eric (Barbara) and Mark (Betty Jo); daughter, Lisa (VanCamp); six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Robert, Erica, JoAnn, Mackenzie and Alexander; and 2 great-grandchildren, Hayden and Gavin. Memorial Services will be held September 12th, 2:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Lansing. The family will receive friends in the Church Fellowship Hall following the service. Phillip Kent Haddock Sr. East Lansing Born January 18, 1938 and received the Gift of Life through a heart transplant on August 14, 1996. He lost his battle from complications of pancreatitis, and died August 28, 2009. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska to Emil and Roma (Havens) Olson. His parents and his first wife, Judith L. Haddock, mother of his children, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Dianne M. Haddock; children, Phillip K. Haddock II (Cheryl Krapf), Brett E. Haddock (Nora Huerta), Tracy L. Priscilla M. McElmurry, 88, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, at her daughter’s home. She was born on Aug 7, 1920, in the Chicago area, the daughter of James and Priscilla Gibb of Lansing. On Aug. 17, 1940, she married Daryl McElmurry. Priscillla was preceded in death by her son, Daryl Gibb McElmurry, her husband Daryl H. McElmurry and her grandaughter Daryl K. McElmurry. Her surviving children are Thomas McElmurry (Denise) of Texas, Priscilla Young (Ken) of Livonia, Melissa Rippee of Jackson and her daughter-in-law Phyillis McElmurry. She was fortunate to have nine granddaughters and three great-grandchildren. Priscilla loved gardening, sewing, needlepoint, reading, golf and the quiet of the countryside. A memorial service was held at her home where her loving presence was felt by all. We all miss her.   |

Ralph worked in drywall construction and enjoyed CB radios, fishing, golf, and listening to music. He also worked at GRC exercising horses. On May 25, 1962, he married Marie Milz and she preceded him in death in 2005. Robert 'Bob' R. Ulrich Robert "Bob" R. Ulrich, age 75, of Palm Harbor, Florida, passed away Monday, August 17, 2009. He was born on February 2, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan. Bob was a graduate of South Lake High School in St. Clair Shores, served in the U.S. Army, and worked many years as a pattern maker in the automotive industry. He passionately enjoyed competing in bowling and golf, visiting casinos with his wife and spending time with his family. Robert Ernest Minda Robert Ernest Minda, age 72, a lifetime resident of Macomb County, died early Saturday morning in Mt. Clemens Regional Medical Center, Mt. Clemens. Robert was born on the family farm in Warren Township on June 25, 1937, a son of the late Ernest and Florence (Pruehs) Minda. Robert served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Berlin Conflict. He was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Patricia Michel on August 8, 1964. The couple made their home in Fraser. Robert was retired from the Fraser Schools where he had worked as a custodian for Disney Elementary and had received numerous awards. Robert had worked for Krauseneck Drapery of Mount Clemens for over 20 years. Following his retirement, Robert worked several years as custodian to St. John Lutheran Church where he received the Volunteer of the Year award in 2007. He will always be remembered for his smile, unselfishness, and his loving and considerate ways. Robert is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Patricia; his adoring daughters, Lisa (Anthony) Sapienza and Julie (Paul) Biliti; and loving grandchildren, Jacob, Joseph, Matthew and Nicholas. Robert L. Shemberger, 86, of White Pigeon, died Aug. 25, 2009, at his home following a short illness. He was born Jan. 16, 1923, in White Pigeon, the son of Lloyd and G. Fay (Messner) Shemberger. On June 4, 1954, he married Helen E. Steckle in Battle Creek. He served in the U.S. Army at the 7th Base Post Office in Yogohama, Japan. He was a White Pigeon resident all his life and was employed at the White Pigeon Paper Mill for 48 years until his retirement in 1989. He was a member of the White Pigeon First Presbyterian Church, a life member and past worshipful master of the White Pigeon Lodge #104 F&AM, Siloam Lodge #35 F&AM of Constantine, a life member and past patron of the Eastern Star #210 of Three Rivers, a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks #1381 of Sturgis, and a member of the Blue-Burdick Post #4896 VFW of White Pigeon.  He enjoyed traveling, driving, reading and spending time with his grandchildren. Surviving are his wife, Helen E. Shemberger of White Pigeon; a son, Roger (Deborah) Shemberger of Portage; granddaughter, Becca Shemberger of Portage; a grandson, Tyler Shemberger of Chicago; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harold Shemberger; and two sisters, Mary Holsinger and Lulu Wallace. Relatives and friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at the Farrand Funeral Home in White Pigeon where services are at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. David McShane and Rev. Wilbur Brandli officating. Thomas E. Garlick, age 69, of Hudson, formerly of Belleville, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti after a courageous battle with cancer. Thomas was born on June 8, 1940, in Sumpter Township, the son of Donald and Lily (Brown) Garlick. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. In 1960, Thomas married his high school sweetheart, Alita M. Leonard. They made their home in Belleville until 1999 when they moved to Hudson. Thomas was a retired boilermaker for Local 169. He was a hard worker and he always had a project he was working on around the farm. Thomas had a love for John Deere tractors. He loved spending time with his dog “puppy” and will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Thomas is survived by his three children, Toni (Pat) Nance, Bobbi (Martin) Kannemann and Tom Garlick; nine grandchildren, Jason, Colt, Sherlyn, Cynthia, Stephinie, Jessica, Brandi, Anthony and Shane; seven great-grandchildren and two sisters, Shirley Brannon and Barbara Diette. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers and two sisters. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. Clyde L. Wonders officiating. Vernon H. Teeple, 82, of Sturgis, died Aug. 15, 2009, following a long illness. He passed away at the Veteran’s Palliative Care Ward in Battle Creek, Mich., with his family by his side. He was very proud of his military service, serving his country in the U.S. Naval Air in World War II. He enlisted after his only brother, Staff Sergeant Richard J. Teeple, was killed in Negros Island, Phillippine Islands. On Aug. 21, 1948, he married Clara Rantz, also from Dearborn. At the time of his death, they were married 61 year. He and Clara had three sons, Rance (Diane) of South Lyon, Richard (Judy) of Dearborn and Wes (Cheryl) of Sturgis. He also had five grandchildren, Brad, Cassie, Stephanie, Rantz and Ryan, who gave him a great deal of pleasure. He is also survived by one sister, Marilyn (Hank) Kazner of Reno, Nev., and one sister-in-law, Helen (Charles) Kayson of Rockwood, Mich; and many nieces and newphews. He was happiest when he was hunting, fishing and camping with his family. After the war, Vernon and his father started a small print shop, Du Processing in Dearborn. He worked at that for 16 years until his father’s death. After selling the business, he was employed at Gaylord Printing Company until his retirement in 1989. He was prceded in death by his parents, a very young brother and sister and his military brother, Richard. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery. |

William Don Fries, Retired Navy Captain, Aviator Age 87, of Glastonbury, CT, died on Friday, August 21, 2009, at Hartford Hospital due to complications of vasculitis. A native of Albion, Idaho, CAPT Fries was born on May 31, 1922, the youngest of eight children, to the late Carrie D. and Charles H. Fries. He is survived by one sister, Velma F. Windward, of Preston Idaho. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Elizabeth Ann Beddow of Logan, WV, in 1992, and is survived by his second wife, Helen Lindquist Coelho-Fries of Glastonbury. He is survived by his son, Eric vanBuskirk Fries, daughter-in-law Jennifer Knight Fries, and his grandson Matthew Thornton Fries, all of Old Lyme. He is also survived by his stepsons and stepdaughter, Joseph R. Coelho of Annapolis, MD, David F. Coelho of Park City, UT, Christine C. Harrigan of Pomona, CA, and Carl A. Coelho of Storrs, CT. CAPT Fries had an illustrious 32-year career in the United States Navy. In 1942, following graduation from the Albion State Normal School and a brief period of high school teaching and coaching in Dietrich, ID, he entered the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and two years later, was commissioned an Ensign and awarded his Naval Aviator wings. His first assignment was with Patrol Bombing Squadron 71 (VPB-71), flying PBY Catalina "Blackcat" seaplanes on attack, reconnaissance and air-sea rescue missions in the South China Sea. Following World War II, VPB-71 was relocated to Norfolk, VA where he met and married Elizabeth Beddow. He then attended the University of Southern California under the Navy's "five-term" program and later served as an aerobatics flight instructor at the Naval Air Station, Corry Field, Pensacola, FL. During the Korean Conflict, CAPT Fries was attached to Air Transport Squadron 21 (VR-21), airlifting troops and combat supplies to the Korean Theater of Operations. Following Korea, he graduated from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey CA, and was subsequently assigned to Naval Air Station Anacostia, near Washington, D.C., where he served as the personal pilot for Under Secretary of the Navy, Mr. William B. Franke. From 1956-58, he was stationed at the Naval Air Facility in Naples, Italy in an Air Transport Squadron. CAPT Fries' next assignment was at the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, RI. Upon graduation, he transitioned from propeller to jet aircraft and was assigned to Heavy Attack Squadron Five (VAH-5), flying the A-3 "Skywarrior" nuclear bomber off of the USS Forrestal (CVA-59) from 1960-61. During the next two years, he was Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer of Heavy Attack Squadron Two (VAH-2) "Royal Rampants", deployed aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43). In 1963, he returned to Washington, D.C., assigned to the Officer Distribution Branch of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. In 1965, CAPT Fries assumed the duties of Navigator aboard the Attack Aircraft Carrier USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42) and later served as Executive Officer. In 1966, he served a one-year tour of duty as Operations Officer for Commander, Fleet Air Whidbey at Oak Harbor, Washington, where he was responsible for training air crews and introducing the A-6 "Intruder" jet bomber to the Pacific Fleet for use in Viet Nam. He then attended Rollins College, Winter Park, FL, graduating with a degree in Business Administration and Economics. In 1968, CAPT Fries served as Commanding Officer of the USS Aludra (AF-55) on "Yankee Station" completing two successful tours of duty in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Viet Nam. CAPT Fries returned to Washington, D.C., as the head of the Compensation Branch of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Prior to his retirement in April, 1974, he served as Executive of the Joint Uniformed Services Per Diem, Travel and Transportation Allowance Committee. During his flying career, he flew 22 different types of aircraft, had over 7000 hours of flight time, and made over 250 aircraft carrier landings. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (WW-II), the Navy Occupation Service Medal, the United Nations Korean Service Medal, the Viet Nam Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Republic of Viet Nam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross) with Palm. After retirement, he raised beef cattle on his farm in Rappahannock County, VA and later owned a real estate brokerage in Charlottesville, VA. Following the death of his wife Elizabeth in 1992, he moved to East Lansing, MI and married Helen Lindquist Coelho. He became an avid Michigan State University Spartans fan, attending MSU football games and following their basketball team. In 2007, he and his wife moved to Glastonbury, CT. CAPT Fries served as a Vice President and Board Member of the Navy Federal Credit Union and as President of the Navy League Chapter in Charlottesville, VA. He was an Honorary Member of the Fleet Reserve Association, a member of the American Legion, the Military Officers Association of America, the Military Order of the Carabao and the Association of Naval Aviation. The family of CAPT Fries would like to express its gratitude and appreciation to the doctors, nurses and medical staff of Hartford Hospital for their compassionate care during his illness. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest making a contribution in his memory to a veteran's organization, especially those that provide assistance to the families of troops wounded or killed in action. Inurnment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. A memorial service is also planned in his hometown of Albion, ID. |
