Age 78, of Windermere, Florida and formerly a long-time resident of Durand, passed away on Saturday Aug. 15, 2009, at Living Joy Memory in Flushing. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19th, 2009, at Trinity Assembly of God, 4363 W. Mt. Morris Rd, Mt. Morris with Reverend David Krist officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-8 p.m. Tuesday at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Mrs. LaVene will be at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday. Barbara S. Wittum, the daughter of Lavern and Lois (Macham) Wittum was born in Flint, MI June 3, 1931. Barbara married Leon LaVene on June 9, 1951 at Trinity Tabernacle, Flint, MI. Together Barbara and Leon had celebrated 58 wonderful years. Barbara was a member of Calvary Assembly of God in Orlando, Fla.. Barbara was a loving and giving mother. Along with Leon, Barbara raised four wonderful children who fondly remember her focus on their education and training as they grew up. Barbara will be especially remembered for her pleasant spirit and love for God. Her presence will be missed by all of her family and friends. Surviving are: husband Leon; daughters Brenda (Dennis) Rainwater of Durand; Debra (James) Stephenson of Flushing; and Terry Jenkins of Owosso; son Leon (Allison) LaVene Jr. of Swartz Creek; siblings Vern (Shirley) Wittum Jr. of Crawfordsville, Ind.; Charles (Juanita) Wittum of Cicero, Ind.; John (Judy) of Fenton; Lynda (John) Smith of Clio; Rebecca (Terry) Tower of Flint; Sister-in-law Virginia Wittum of Millington, MI; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Allen Brian Foley Lapeer Allen Brian Foley, 88, of Lapeer for the last 30 years (formerly of Capac/Berkley) passed away Wednesday (August 12, 2009). He was born August 30, 1920, in Royal Oak Township, to Richard and Helen (Melchik) Foley. He married Linda Irene Fry at the Presbyterian Church in Royal Oak. Mr. Foley proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Allen was an electrician at Pearl Harbor. He was an electrician in the construction business. Allen was a great family man and a gentleman. He worked in Alaska as a gold miner and road builder. He loved traveling and enjoyed wheelin' and dealin'. Arden L. Baker, age 77, of Somerset Center died Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at his home. He was born Oct. 18, 1931, in Jerome, to Ola and Ruth (Tuttle) Baker. On May 6, 1955, he married Carolyn L. Harbaugh, who survives. He had been employed by Tecumseh Products for 16 years.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Arden attended the Osseo Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, Carolyn, he is survived by three daughters, Debra M. (Jae Guetschow) Royal of Blissfield, Laurie Anne (Larry) Zehr of Caledonia and Cynthia (Robert) Valdez of Tecumseh; a son, Brian A. (Denise) Baker of Aurora, Colo.; nine grandchildren, Courtney Royal, Eric Sisson, Daniel Zehr, Adam Zehr, James Zehr, Bobby Valdez, Joey Valdez, Jason Guetschow and Deanna Guetschow; five great-grandchildren; a brother. Parker Baker of Hillsdale; and three sisters, Barbara Wilcox of Coldwater, Beth (Robert) Meloche of  Naples, Fla., and Bonnie Smith of Naples, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Betty Baker in infancy; and a brother, John Baker. Avery G. Goodrich Cheboygan Avery G. Goodrich, 90, of Cheboygan, passed away Saturday (August 8, 2009). He was born September 19, 1918, in Lapeer, the son of Norman and Elva (Craig) Goodrich. In high school, he was active in sports and received the LeLand-Baird trophy awarded annually to the citizen-scholar-athlete of the year. He also pitched for the Lapeer Merchants baseball team. After teaching school for a year, he decided to enter the Michigan State Police, completed police school in 1942 and was stationed in Paw Paw until he entered the service that same year. On May 16, 1942, he married Virginia M. McLeod of Silverwood. During WWII, he served with the Army Air Corps and was stationed in England until the end of the war in Europe. After the war, Avery resumed his career in the state police, first as a trooper, then with the fire marshal s division and later as a detective, transferring to the Cheboygan post in 1957. Barbara Morse DeLine, wife of Otis DeLine, passed away Aug. 15, 2009, in the company of her family. Barbara Lou Staup was born May 6, 1929, to Kenneth and Etta (Hull) Staup and grew up on their farm at Lenawee Junction. She attended County Normal school for teachers and began her career in country schools. She married Robert Morse and moved to the Morse Family farm where they raised two daughters, Virginia and MaryAnn. Barbara completed her bachelor degree at Adrian College and her Master’s at Siena Heights University. She taught elementary students at Alexander school in Adrian, and then spent the remainder of her teaching career at Hiawatha Elementary in the Washington Local School district. On Nov. 30, 1992, she married Otis DeLine and they spent their retirement years traveling and enjoying time at the summer home on Devils Lake in Michigan and Yuma, Ariz., in the winter. She is survived by her husband, Otis E. DeLine; daughters, Virginia (Jim) Hanes of Foss, Okla., MaryAnn (Gary) Bettis of Blissfield; her dearly loved five grandsons, Jason Knisel of Riga, Brad (Amy) Bettis of Blissfield, Garron (Jamie) Rorick of Jasper, Craig Bettis of Stephenville, Texas, and Jerry (Kirra) Rorick of Foss, Okla.; great-grandchildren, Cloe and Seth Knisel, Zoe Rorick, Quentin, Sarah and Carson Bettis. Joan Woodward, Bob Arthur and Curtis Rorick were special friends. At her direction, cremation has taken place. C. Fabian “Mickey” McGraw, 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at Drews Place of Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 10, 1919, in Pavo, Ga., to Hezekiah and Leila (Adams) McGraw. He was married June 17, 1950 to Lois Morr and she survives. Mickey received a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was the former President of Hillsdale Tool and Union Steel Products in  Albion. Mickey was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale and was a trustee emeritus of Hillsdale College having served as a board trustee from 1975 to 2003. Besides his wife, Lois, he is survived by a daughter, Karen (Houston Morrow) McGraw of Telluride, Colo.; two sons, Michael (Lynn) McGraw of St. Louis, Mo., and Matthew McGraw of Hillsdale; and four grandchildren. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. A memorial service for C. Fabian “Mickey” McGraw will be held at a later date. Charles C. Fletcher Lapeer Charles C. Fletcher, of Lapeer, passed away Saturday (August 8, 2009), his 91st birthday. He was born August 8, 1918, in Cambridge, Mass., to Ralph and Mary-Lewis (Chenoweth) Fletcher. Charles served his country in China-Burma-India during WWII. In 1963, he married Mary Howting in Birmingham, where they lived until moving to the Lapeer area in 1988. In 1982, he retired from Ford Motor Company, where he was a photo lithographer. During retirement, he was a member of the Lapeer Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed gardening, photography and genealogy. He is survived by his special friend, Irene Blazo of Lapeer, and niece, Kris (James) Whitlock of Mears, Mich. (formerly of Lapeer). Charles E. Bratton, 84, of Coldwater, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch Co. He was born Oct. 16, 1924 in Montpelier, Ohio to Samuel and Irene (Govin) Bratton. He serviced in the US Army during WW II in the European Theater. He started the Leran Copper & Brass in 1968 in Coldwater. He was working for American Copper and Brass until time of his death. Charles R. Schmucker, Sr., age 72, of Onsted passed away Aug. 15, 2009. Mr. Schmucker was born June 21, 1937, in Pettisville, Ohio, the son of Harold and Marvel (Severance) Schmucker. On Oct. 26, 1956, he married Carol Ann Leininger in Angola, Ind., and she survives. Charles owned and operated Irish Hills Welding and Repair for many years. He was also known for his cooking and baking pies for restaurants and friends. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed taking trips to South Dakota, Beaver Island, Fletcher’s Floodwaters and Ludington. Charles was a member of the Michigan-South Dakota Pheasant Hunting Club. Besides his wife, Carol Ann, he is survived by one daughter, Maryann (Mike) Messer; six sons, Charles Jr. (Cynthia), Terry (Deb), Steve (Debby), Scott (Cindy), Don (Cristie) and David; two sisters, Phyllis Short and Janet (Charles) Rychner; one brother Dean (Chris); nine grandchildren whom he adored and enjoyed spending time with, Steven, Kyle, Erin, Nicole, Michael, Manda,  Ethan, Dana and Rachel; six stepgrandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Gene was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW posts, both in Harbor Beach. He was a retired employee of the Budd Co., working for over 27 years. Everett Dale Mahan Charlotte Formerly an Oldsmobile General Supervisor of Product Engineering Specifications and Reproductions & New Car Specifications Coordinator, age 87, passed away on August 16, 2009 at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Eaton County, Michigan on June 1, 1922, to Elmer and Murlie (Bryan) Mahan. He graduated from Olivet High School in 1940 and immediately got a position at Oldsmobile, completing further degrees and course studies in engineering. He retired after 40 years. During WWII he served with the U. S. Army in Europe with the 787 Field Artillery in two major campaigns, earning EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal and Germany Occupation Ribbon. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Audrey (Parr); four children: Kathy Rice (Minnesota), Terri Mahan (Arizona), Jeff Mahan (Michigan), Greg (Ginger) Mahan (Arizona); five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren, all of whom he was exceedingly proud. He also always cherished the love of in-laws Keith and Barbara French, Max and Mary Lou Powers, Janette Johns, Ila Mae Young and their children. Dale was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James Mahan; and sister-in-law, Florence. Special niece and nephew, Marilyn and Bruce Hart are his only living Mahan relatives. He was a very avid hunter, fisherman, and athlete who enjoyed all sports, especially golf, which he was secretary of many leagues after retirement. Dale and Audrey spent 26 years of winter retirement in Florida where they had many wonderful friends and great times. Dale was a Past Patron and Life member of Maple City Chapter #218, O.E.S. and a Past Master and Life member of Charlotte Masonic Lodge #120. He was also a proud member and an Ambassador of the Grand Rapids Saladin Shrine Temple and a member and Past President of the Eaton County Shrine Club. He was a life member of VFW Post #2406 in Charlotte and a member of the American Legion Post #42. Visitation will take place from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 20, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte directly preceding the 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service. Francis Joseph “Joe” Clauda, 91, of 262 Chapel St., Oneida, N.Y., died Sunday evening Aug. 16, 2009, at the Oneida Healthcare Center Extended Care Facility. Joe was born on March 13, 1918, in Adrian, Mich., the son of Francis Edwin and Angelina Brosamer Clauda. He grew up in Adrian and was a graduate of St. Joseph’s High School. He had been a resident of Oneida since 1957, coming from Attleboro, Mass. He proudly served the U.S. Navy as an aviation radioman from Sept. 23, 1941, until being honorably discharged on Sept. 19, 1945. He married Jean A. Kudrnac on Jan. 5, 1946, in San Diego, Calif. Mrs. Clauda died on March 10, 1995. Joe was employed as a designer with Oneida Ltd. Silversmiths from 1957 until his retirement in 1985. He had been previously employed by the Watson Sterling Co. in Attleboro and the Gorham Silver Co. in Providence, R.I. Surviving are two daughters and one son-in-law, Carol and David Caolo of Port Richie, Fla., and Frances “Frankie” Goclon of Verona, N.Y.; one son and daughter-in-law, Mark J. and Miko Clauda of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gerald W. Brown Gerald W. Brown, 78, Caseville, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at Genesys Hospice. Gerald was a veteran on the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Clio American Legion. After 42 years working for the Buick Motor Division, he retired from there in 1992. Gerald had owned property on Sand Point for decades. Before the area was developed, he would camp on his lot with no one around and later he was one of the first to build a house in that area. After retiring, he moved there permanently. Jerry was active in the Sand Point Association, serving as treasurer of that group. As he rarely cooked, he was well known around town in the restaurants and kept well informed on local happenings. Someone could always be heard saying "Hi Jerry." He is survived by his sister, Dolores (George) Smith; eight nieces and nephews and seven great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Erma Brown and his sister, Beverly Egan. A memorial service was held on August 8, 2009 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville with Rev. Howard L. Bussing, age 82, of Adrian passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at his home under the loving care of his wife, family, and Hospice of Lenawee. Howard was born March 14, 1927, in Adrian, the son of Andrew and Mildred (Warner) Bussing. During World War II, Howard served in the U.S. Navy and was honored with the World War II Victory Ribbon, American Area Ribbon and the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon. Howard returned from service to graduate from Adrian High School with his high school sweetheart in the Class of 1948. On June 19, 1949, Howard married his sweetheart, Catherine Kidd, in Adrian. Catherine, his wife of 60 years, survives. Howard was a salesman for Electric Wholesale Supply in Adrian for 23 years. He then worked for Englewood Electric for 17 years, retiring in 1989. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. Howard was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting, and was passionate about fishing. In addition to his wife, Howard is survived by two daughters, Pamela Bussing of St. Louis, Mo., and Lori (Bobby) Randolph of Jasper; two grandchildren, Carrie (Jay Mueller) Knox and Lee Partridge; one great-grandson, Ziggy; and his siblings, Edward (Grace) Bussing of Iron River, Mich., Gordon (Blanche) Bussing, Raymond (Mary) Bussing, Maxine Smith, Marilyn Franke and Mary Lou Jett, all of Adrian. Howard was preceded in death by a sister, Catherine Morton. At Howard’s request, cremation has taken place. The memorial service for Howard will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Fairfield Cemetery. Irene Julia Maurer Irene Julia Maurer, age 90, a Warren resident for over 48 years, died Sunday, August 16, 2009, at her home surrounded by her family. Irene was born August 13, 1919, in Minden, Michigan the daughter of the late Frank Grifka and the late Laura (nee: Peruski) Grifka. Mrs. Maurer worked as a state of Michigan licensed cosmetologist, and later worked in the Warren Consolidated Schools cafeteria as a cook. When Irene was not working she enjoyed bowling and loved watching wrestling on television. Also she and her husband traveled and spent many wonderful days with their grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Irene Maurer is survived by her beloved husband James. She is the dear mother of Gary (Marianne) Maurer, Roger (Kathy) Maurer, and Brian (Holly) Maurer. Loving Grandmother of Warren (Kathy), Gregory (Cindy), Rachel, Kurt, Amanda, and Jennifer. Great-grandmother of Warren Jr., Brenna, and Dylan. She is the dear sister of Ray (Ruth) Grifka, Richard (the late Pat) Grifka, Rita (the late Zig) Oberski, Bernice (Jack) Gryczka, and the late Catherine (Frank) Wojtolewicz, Clara (Julius) Tripkowski, Minnie (Ira) Tripkowski, Josephine (Ambrose) Chinoski, Art (Suzie) Grifka, Norbert (Charlotte) Grifka, Herbert Grifka, and Eugene (Billy) Grifka. Visitation for Mrs. Maurer will be Tuesday from 3-9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Scripture service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 � mile). J.D. “Jerry” Wade, 84, of Bronson, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009 from 4-8 p.m. at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009 at the funeral home. Pastor Terry Siler of the First Congregational Church in Bronson will officiate. Interment will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Noble Township. J.D. was born on June 25, 1925 in Centertown, Kent. to Monroe and Velma (Kerr) Wade. He was raised in Birmingham and graduated from high school there. He soon entered the US Army, where he served for nearly two years in France during WWII. He married Mary Jane Messimer in Jackson in 1948. They had a son, Jerry, together and later divorced. J.D. had worked for the Silvercup Bread Company for many years. His job transferred to Jackson and then in the late 1960s to Coldwater. He married Leona “Lee” Mynhier on Aug. 30, 1968 in Coldwater. He had lived in the Bronson area ever since. He later went to work for Hooker Oil and most recently the Best American Car Wash. Jerry loved to mow the lawn and monitor the local gas prices. He was a faithful newspaper reader and enjoyed playing cards, woodworking and having coffee with his buddies at the McDonald’s in Bronson. He is survived by a son, Jerry (Petite) Wade of Coldwater, daughters; Brenda Nutt-Sherrick of Coldwater and Debra Nutt-Herman and her husband Bryan of Bronson, brothers; Donald (Mary Ann) Wade of Farmington Hills and Robert Wade of Florida, grandchildren; Courtney Nicole Sherrick, David Sherrick, Trinity Bird, and three great-grandchildren. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, wife Leona, daughter Judy Nutt and sister Mildred Smith. Memorial contributions may be made to the Coldwater High School Softball Program or to the family. Jack E. Shaffer, 76, of Hudson passed away peacefully Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian, Mich. He was born Sept. 7, 1932, in Hudson, Mich., the son of Howard and Myrtle (Brenner) Shaffer. He married Rosemarie Spadafora on Nov. 29, 1958, in Hudson and she survives. Jack was a life-long Hudson area resident, retiring from the U.S. Postal Service in 1991, with more than 30 years of service. He was a graduate of Hudson High School Class of 1950 and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, spending time in Germany during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Hudson American Legion Hannan Colvin Post #180; American Legion Firing Squad for many years; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years; Thursday Afternoon Men’s Golf League, and served on the Hudson School Board for several years. Jack was a Boy Scout, played football, basketball and baseball in high school, but golf and bowling were his favorites. He dearly loved his children and grandchildren and will be greatly missed by all. Surviving Jack, besides his wife of 50 years, Rosemarie, are two children, Michelle (David) Bellfy of Brooklyn and Matthew P. (JoAnne) Shaffer of Hudson; six grandchildren, Adam, Sarah and Alex Bellfy, Lance, Landon and Lauren Shaffer; one sister, Frances Jean Onweller of Williamston. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of Christian Burial for Jack will be Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Hudson at 11 a.m. with Fr. H. Paul Ruddy as celebrant. John Wesley Hanna, age 87 of Union City, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009 at his home in Union City. John was born in Chicago, Ill. on Aug. 18, 1921 to Mark S. Hanna and Geneva L. Travis. He was a World War II veteran who served in Italy in the Army Air Corp. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Distinguished Unit Badge, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the Victory Medal. John retired from the city of Coldwater where he was the street department superintendent. He was an avid wood worker who enjoyed repairing damaged furniture. His passion was building furniture from scratch for the family. He was involved with the reclamation of the Historic Hammond House in Union City. Prior to his attendance at the Urbandale Baptist Church, John attended the United Methodist Church in Union City. He is survived by his wife Donna Lee Wofford; daughters Susan Frook and Lorna Fuller; sons David Hanna and Daniel Hanna; sisters Geraldine Fleer, Dorothy Goheen and Joan Harn; brothers Charles Gooden and David Hanna; stepsons Robert Warner and Richard Wofford; stepdaughters Peggy Weeks and Patty Hiatt; 22 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Elaine Miller, second wife Jeanette Warner, daughter Sharon Bell, sister Elaine Rakauskas and a brother John Davis. Per John’s request, he will be cremated. Lorene C. Engelhardt Lorene C. Engelhardt, 85, Sebewaing, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, July 31, 2009. She was born on the family farm near Sebewaing on September 11, 1923, the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Stoeckle-Taschner) Hafner. Sixty-seven years ago, on May 16, 1942 she was united in marriage to Carl F. Engelhardt in Sebewaing. Lorene was an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh where she served in many volunteer capacities with the Ladies Aid, Ladies Choir, and Lutheran World Relief. One of her greatest pleasures was serving as a volunteer at the church's day school and listening to students read. She enjoyed baking, canning, crocheting, gardening and sewing. She retired from General Cable Corporation of Cass City in 1984 and served as the retiree group's secretary-treasurer for many years. In addition to her husband, Carl, she is survived by two sons, Kenneth (Connie) Engelhardt, of Rose City and David (Patricia) Engelhardt, Cincinnati, Ohio; two daughters, Jeanette (Michael) Bach, Sebewaing and Joy (Gilbert) Sprague, Owendale; eight grandchildren, Kenneth (Melissa) Engelhardt, Kurt Engelhardt, Kathy Henderson, Michelle (Brad) Burke, Kevin (Brenda) Fritz, Elizabeth Engelhardt, Heather Sprague and Jeremy Sprague; seven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was born March 27, 1944 in Port Huron, Michigan, the son of the late Lewis Howe and Marquerite (Tornow) Kerckaert. Marvin married Sandra K. Ordish on June 17, 1967 in Sandusky. Marvin graduated from Sandusky High School-Class of 1962. He worked at Harry s Body Shop in Sandusky. He served his country in the US Navy and he was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Sandra Howe; one daughter, Krista (Michael) Kennedy of Port Huron; three grandchildren, Tia Clark, Tylor Clark, Lauren Samson; one great grandson, Jesse Clark; five sisters, Carolyn (Terry) Buskirk of Sandusky, Janice (Frank) Wercinski of Alabama, Sharon (John) Forbes of Muskegon, Becky McGuffin of Port Huron, Patricia (Joe) Calabrese of Ira Township; three brothers, Richard (Cindy) Howe of Port Huron, Edward (Barbara) Kerckaert of Lapeer, Anthony Kerckaert of Sandusky, several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Roxanne Clark and one brother, Robert Kerckaert. Funeral Services were held at the Hacker Funeral Parlors, in Sandusky with Pastor Dan Skirvin, Muskegon officiating. The Military Rites by the Sandusky VFW and American Legion was also conducted. Marjorie D. Wright, age 85, of Tecumseh died peacefully Sunday morning, Aug. 16, 2009, at her daughter’s home with her family at her side. She was born on May 15, 1924, in Jackson, Mich., the daughter of Robert and Ruth (Kishpaugh) McGregor. Marge was Nutrition Director for the Lenawee County Department on Aging for 20 years until she retired in 1994. She was a member of NewSong Community Church, Tecumseh, and had enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, going to Hidden Lake Gardens and spending time with her family and many friends. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by three sons, Gene (Deborah) Wright of Okemos, Mich., Gary (Rose) Wright of Raleigh, N.C., and Kim (Linda) Wright of Eaton Rapids, Mich.; three daughters, Ruth Ann Weber of Jackson, Mich., Roberta (Brian) Kindinger of East Lansing, Mich., and Renee Smith of Tecumseh; two stepdaughters, Dolores (James) Bannon of Williamston, Mich., and Carol (Edward) Basso of Grand Ledge, Mich.; 14 grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, one great-grandchild and six stepgreat-grandchildren; her beloved dog, Zsa Zsa, and many “family like” friends. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and canning and sewing for her family while they were growing up. Mark Alan Burkhardt, 53, died on Sunday, Aug. 9, 2009 at zMax Dragway in Charlotte, N.C. of natural causes. Mark was born Aug. 31, 1955 in Coldwater. He resided in Bronson for 43 years. He moved to Denton, N.C. to continue to pursue his life in racing and career in high performance. He graduated from Bronson High School in 1973. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force as an F-111A Mechanic Specialist. Following his honorable discharge, Mark worked for Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Covert for two years. He was able to work side-by-side with his father at Consumers Energy for eight years. His passion for race cars and high performance led him to manage Lane Automotive in Coldwater for five years, and then to owning his own business in Quincy as Thunder Competition for five years. Mark worked at Wal-Mart Distribution for seven years in Coldwater. He left Michigan to continue to pursue his dreams in racing at CV Products in Thomasville, N.C. for one year and then becoming the lead sales and technical representative for Arrington Engines in Martinsville, Va. Mark worked most of his life with his wife, parents and kids running Burkhardt Racing part-time but full-time in his heart. Mark was preceded in death by his father Junior, and brother Jeff. TRAVERSE CITY - Norman Hall, age 99, died Aug. 7 at the family cottage in northwest Michigan, with his daughters attending. He came to Midland in 1933, and was employed as a chemical engineer at Dow Chemical Company until retirement. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he was preceded in death by his brother, Don Hall. He was married 68 years to Betty Hall, who died this past January. Their son, David William Hall, died at the age of 40. She was born on April 28, 1930 in Pittsford to Charlie G. and Geraldine (Hinkley) Calkins. She married Harry R. Haas on Feb. 8, 1948 in Pittsford, and he survives. Phyllis lived her early life in the Pittsford area and then she lived in the Addison and North Adams area for many years. She graduated from Pittsford High School in 1947. She was formerly employed at the Addison Telephone Company, Dr. Kelly’s Veterinarian Clinic, former secretary at Addison High School and then a secretary at Lee Stamping in Addison. She was a former member of the Lady Elks of Hillsdale, member of Hudson American Legion Auxiliary and former member of the Sweet Adelines of Adrian and Coldwater. Surviving besides her husband Harry are one daughter, LuAnn Bowers of Adrian, one son Charlie Haas of North Adams, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Charlie Calkins, Jr. and Verlin Calkins. Cremation will take place. ROBERT "BOB" A. CRUICKSHANK APPLEGATE Robert "Bob" A. Cruickshank, age 58, a resident of Applegate passed away on Friday August 7, 2009 at the Port Huron Hospital. He was born on October 21, 1950 in Highland Park the son of the late Arthur and Winifred (Porter) Cruickshank. Robert married Gail Ash on December 4, 1971 in Drayton Plains. Bob worked in the telephone and telecommunications field. He was an avid deer and pheasant hunter, and enjoyed his farm and horses. Bob and his wife Gail were instrumental in many area animal rescues, especially those of horses, which were taken to their Applegate farm and lovingly cared for. He is survived by his wife, Gail Cruickshank of Applegate; one son, Shaun Cruickshank of Port Huron; his grandson, Damien Cruickshank of Applegate; one sister, Ann Kline of Warren; many aunts and uncles, several nieces and nephews and many cousins. Sister Loretta Ruedisueli, formerly known as Sister Louis Virginia Ruedisueli, died Aug. 16, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center. She was 97 years of age and in the 76th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister Loretta was born in Detroit, Mich., to Louis and Laura (Mahlmeister) Ruedisueli. Sister graduated from St. Catherine High School in Detroit, Mich., and received a Bachelor of Philosophy Degree in English and a Master of Teaching Degree in Education, both from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich. Sister spent 35 years ministering in education in Chicago, Ill.; Grafton, W.Va.; St. Joseph, Flint, Detroit, Adrian and Owosso, Mich. She was Principal at St. Lawrence in Chicago for four years. Sister was Archivist for the Adrian Dominican Congregation from 1969 to 1974. She was Secretary and Bookkeeper for four years at St. Gabriel Rectory in Detroit and 13 years at St. Suzanne in Detroit. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2002. Sister Loretta is survived by loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel  at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 E. Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, MI 49221. |

Thelma "Bobbie" Armstrong Lapeer Thelma "Bobbie" Armstrong, 73, of Lapeer (formerly of Clarkston) passed away Tuesday (August 11, 2009). She was born February 29, 1936, in Pontiac, to George and Mildred (Wood) Miller. She married Henry "Hank" Armstrong on May 20, 1983 in Rochester. Bobbie was a loving mother and wife and was a caring homemaker her entire life. Thomas J. Rasdale DeWitt Thomas J. Rasdale, 55, went to be with his Heavenly Father, Monday, August 17, 2009 after a long and difficult 5½year battle with cancer. He was born November 6, 1953 in St. Johns, MI the son of Charles and Joan (Wilcox) Rasdale. Tom graduated from St. Johns High School with the Class of 1971 and attended The University of Michigan where he was a manager of the Wolverine Football team under Coach Bo Schembechler. He graduated from the U of M in December 1974 and continued his education by earning a Law Degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing in May of 1978. Tom was employed with the State of Michigan for 24 years as an attorney with The State Court of Appeals after working six years as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Bay City, MI. Tom was obsessed with golfing and when he enjoyed better health, was and avid runner, competing in and completing full marathons. He loved watching sports of all kinds either in person or on television and was a huge supporter of the DeWitt Panthers. Tom married Becky Whittaker in Cass City, MI in 1988 and she survives him. Also surviving are two daughters, Andrea Ruth and Megan Elizabeth; his parents, Charles and Joan Rasdale of St. Johns; three brothers, Ed (Diana) and Bob (Sandy) of St. Johns, Mike (Rhea) of Higgins Lake; two sisters, Ruth Ann Rasdale and Mary Ann (Larry) Blossom all of Ovid; parents-in-law, Gerald and Ruth Whittaker of Cass City; sisters-in-law, Ann (David) Borger of West Lake Village, CA and Colleen Whittaker of Traverse City; brother-in-law, David Whittaker of Cass City; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends at Redeemer United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Redeemer United Methodist Church 13980 Schavey Rd. DeWitt with Pastor Rodney Kalajainen officiating. It was Tom's wish to be cremated and his ashes scattered at a later date. The family will receive relatives and friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to service at Redeemer United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to an educational trust fund for Tom's daughters at Fifth Third Bank of DeWitt 13007 S. US 27 DeWitt, MI 48820.   Tonya Anne Morse, 48, of Ft. Collins, Colorado, died of complications resulting from severe brain trauma on Friday, May 8, 2009 at the Pathways Hospice in Loveland, Colorado. She was born May 21, 1960, in Adrian. A memorial service for Tonya will be held at the Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, with Father Richard Eberle officiating. Interment will follow in Sand Creek Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 11 a.m.-1 p.m. the day of the service.   |

Vincent J. Bertolini Vincent J. Bertolini, age 82, of Warren, passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009. He was born January 19, 1927, in Detroit. Mr. Bertolini served in the U.S. Army and was a Hi-lo driver for Udylite Co., for over 18 years. He is survived by a son Michael of Harrison Township; a daughter Barbara (Ray) Taylor of Richmond; two grandchildren, Ramon (Michelle) Taylor Jr., Jennifer (Bill) Plunkett, four great-grandchildren, Helena, Ramon III, Christian and Madelynn; brother, Angelo of Leonard Township and special neighbors, the Pomerico family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, a son, Joseph, sister, Sara Riggio and brother, Joe. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at 9:30 a.m. at the Harold W. Vick Funeral Home, 140 S. Main, Mt. Clemens, Mich., with the Rev. Father Michael Cooney officiating.   Wilma Maxine Gilbert, 91, of Jackson, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2009 at her home. She was born July 27, 1918 in Liberty Township to Homer and Civilla (Lake) Adams. She was married Jan. 29, 1938 to Melvin F. Gilbert and he preceded her in death Aug. 23, 2008. Surviving are two sons, James (Alice) Walwarth of Jackson and Melvin (Sally) Gilbert Jr. of Hawkinsville, Georgia; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Eva Yeider and Elizabeth Mercer; and a brother, Leo Adams. There will be no visitation or calling hours. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Aldrich Cemetery, Somerset. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale.
