Betty Messner, 81, died at her home in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on July 6, 2009. She was born Aug. 23, 1927 in Jones, Mich., a daughter of Roy and Ila Milliser. A graduate of Constantine in 1945, she married Ramon Messner on June 29, 1946. In 1981, they moved to Port St. Lucie, Fla. Known for her wonderful baking skills, she was a great support for the many activities, organizations and groups her family was involved with. Survivors include sons Michael O. Messner and wife Kathy of Constantine, Tim R. Messner and wife Eilene of Port St. Lucie; daughter, Missie A. Liss and husband Jay of Port St. Lucie; grandchildren Corey Messner and wife Shawn of Okemos, Stacy Sheehan and husband Brent of Sturgis, Tyler and Taylor beckford of Port St. Lucie, Jeffey Liss of Port St. Lucie and two great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Collin Sheehan of Sturgis.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Ramon. Brian "Scad" Scadden Metamora Brian "Scad" Scadden, 67, of Metamora (formerly of Sterling Heights) died Saturday (July 25, 2009). Brian was born April 27, 1942, in Lemsford Village, England. He worked as an engineer in the plastics industry for 50 years, retiring in 2006. Mr. Scadden enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, also playing and watching soccer. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Davison and the family would like memorial contributions to be made to the food pantry there at the church. Mr. Scadden is survived by his loving wife, Carol Scadden of Metamora; dear children, Andrew Scadden of Warren and Gaynor (Roger) Farnsworth of Shelby Twp.; 4 grandchildren; siblings, Irene (Brendan) Kinsell and Dave (Sue) Scadden. CLARE ERNEST KOHN SNOVER Clare Ernest Kohn, age 86, of Snover, died Friday, July 24, 2009 at Covenant Cooper Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. He was born September 11, 1922 in Snover, Michigan, the son of the late Benjamin and Bessie (Schultz) Kohn. Clare was a lifelong area resident and farmer. He also worked and retired from General Motors after more than 30 years. He was a Traveler, traveling to every continent. He is survived by two sisters, Nona Moore of Sandusky, Betty Grives of Sandusky; one brother, Norman (Verle) Kohn of Millington,and several nieces and nephews. Charles D. Helsel, 80, of Woodbridge Township, passed away Monday, July 27, 2009, at the Mac McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 5, 1928 in Barry County to Charles H. and Melvia Mae (Brink) Helsel. He was married June 14, 1960 to Leona Mae Ruth Bisher and she survives. Charles retired in 1985 as a deputy sheriff and marine officer for Hillsdale County. He was a Civil Defense and Emergency Services storm spotter and owner of Fields Corners Centennial Farm. He loved bowling, fishing, hunting and motorcycle riding. Surviving besides his wife Leona are a daughter, Susan (Charles) Robison of Hillsdale; two sons, Daniel Bisher of Woodbridge Township, and Rodney (Julie) Bisher of Lansing; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Margaret and Mary; four brothers, Bernard, Donald, Willard and Harold; and a grandson Cameron Scott Bisher. Funeral services for Charles D. Helsel will be 11 a.m. Friday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Elder Rod Bisher of S. Lansing Christian Church officiating. Interment will follow in Frontier Cemetery. Dareld E. Thurston, 78, of 59289 Long Lake Road, Colon, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2009 at the Bronson Select Specialty Hospital in Kalamazoo. Dareld was born Oct. 27, 1930 in Sherwood a son to the late Melvin and Belva (Youngs) Thurston. Dareld had lived most all of his life in the Sherwood and Colon area. On July 18, 1953, he married Dorothy Bell Littlejohn in Sherwood. She preceded him in death on Aug. 11, 2008. Dareld had served in the United States Marines Corp. with Platoon 2l4 during the Korean War. Dareld had worked at Douglas Mfg. in Bronson, Eaton Corp. of Battle Creek, and retired from Ross Laboratories of Sturgis. He enjoyed the out of doors fishing, hunting and trapping. He is survived by three children: Rick (Lori) Thurston of Colon, Rodney Thurston of Colon and Rhonda (Robert) Thoms of Sherwood, eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, and one sister Opal Davis of Union City and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one great grandson Dillan Labo and a sister Jean Trine. The family will receive relatives and friends at Dareld’s home at 59289 Long Lake Road in Colon on Sunday August 2, 2009  from 2-4 p.m. Funeral services celebrating the life of Dareld E. Thurston will then take place at his home at 4 p.m. with Pastor Robert Baxtor and Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Cremation will follow and private interment of cremains will take place at a later date at Sherwood Cemetery. David M. Crissman, 46, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Aug. 1, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich., following a long, hard-fought battle with diabetes. He was born Oct. 2, 1962, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to Richard and Beverly (Smith) Crissman. David was a lifelong Sturgis resident and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1980 and attended Glen Oaks Community College. He had been employed as a security guard at the Kirsch Company in Sturgis. David was a member of the Sons of American Legion Post #73 and was past Detachment Commander 1984-1985 and served as a member of the Alternate National Executive Committee. He was also a member of the Eagles Lodge #1314, St. Joseph County Conservation and Sportsman’s Club, the National Rifle Association and was proud to serve on the Tri-Township Fire Department. He enjoyed participating in local pool leagues and was an avid sports fan of the University of Michigan. David is survived by his mother, Beverly Crissman of Sturgis; aunt, Alice Crissman of Toledo, Ohio; uncles, Robert Smith of Ocala, Fla. and Ronald Crissman of Framingham, Mass. and many cousins He was preceded in death by his father. Frances Yoder, 91, of Las Vegas, and formerly of White Pigeon, passed away July 27, 2009. Frances was born Sept. 13, 1917, in Michigan, a daughter of Frank and Edna (Grimes-Bellaire) Yoder. She was a 44-year resident of Las Vegas, retiring from the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino. Frances, loving mother and grandmother, was survived by her son, Duane (Mikki); granddaughter, Kristina (Jason); great-granddaughter, Arayla; granddaughter, Joanna (Jason); son, Robert (Beth); daughter, Sharon (Tom); four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Frederick J. Henderson, 75, of Montgomery, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County. He was born Jan. 23, 1934, in Detroit, to Marshall and Virginia (Mallor) Henderson. He served in Germany in the U.S. Air Force 1952–1956 and belonged to the Coldwater American Legion Post 0052. A 32nd Degree Mason, he was also a member of the Finlater Masonic Lodge 475 of Detroit, the Shriners of North America and Moose Lodge 2387 of Fremont, Ind. Mr. Henderson was a construction millwright for Local 1102, installing pumps in power plants. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Parker) Henderson, whom he married April 27, 1962; one daughter, Darcie (Todd) Bird, Fremont, Ind.; one son, Fred Henderson, Montgomery; one sister, Joyce Henderson, Madison Heights; one brother, Jack (Cheryl) Henderson, Waterford and three grandchildren. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Southern Michigan Railroad, Friends of the Library and the Clinton Historical Society. Gary Dean Moulton, 63, of Jonesville, passed away Friday, July 31, 2009 at his residence. He was born July 7, 1946 in Hillsdale to Donald DeWayne and Genevieve (Sayles) Moulton. Gary served our country in the U.S. Army. He worked at Finishing Touch for 20 years and worked at Butler Speedway. He enjoyed going to auctions and yard sales. Gary really loved his children and his grandchildren. Survivors include daughter, Tanisha (Mike) Decaire of Jonesville; son, Shawn (Amy) Moulton of Tekonsha; sister, Louise (Roy Jr.) Signor of Litchfield; brothers, Ruben (Marty) Moulton of Gladwin, Ron (Jeanie) Moulton of Wickenburg, Ariz., William (Lucy) Moulton of Coldwater and Conard  (Judy) Moulton of Horton and six grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dean and Wayne. Funeral Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at George White Funeral Home, Litchfield, with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family. |

George Raymond Bosworth Sr. passed away peacefully  on July 25, 2009,  at home with family at his side.   Born on October 15, 1915, in Holland, George was the son of Raymond and Vista Bosworth. A graduate of Holland High School in 1933, he was active in music, attending Interlochen Music Camp and playing in bands and orchestras. He obtained a private flying license and in 1943 enlisted in the U.S. Navy Air Corps. That year, he married Ruth Fisher in Grand Haven, then moved to Livermore Naval Air Station to become a flight instructor. In 1945, he enrolled at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in Industrial Engineering. Upon graduation, his family moved to LeRoy, New York where he was employed by General Foods. In 1950, he was transferred to Chicago where he was employed in the food industry for over 25 years until his retirement in 1978. George and Ruth moved to San Diego in 1984. They traveled extensively to China, Kenya, Japan, Morocco, and every country in Western Europe. They especially enjoyed traveling to Switzerland to visit their daughter Charlene and her family and to Arizona to visit their son George and his family. George Sr. is survived by his loving wife, Ruth; son, George; and daughter, Charlene Bach. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Marlene, Andre and Eric in Switzerland, and Allison and Laura in Arizona; and five great-grandchildren, Emma Bosworth-Schirra, Sean and Luka Copeland, and Morgan and Lillian Greenwood. George will be remembered as a fine gentleman who loved music and flying. What he loved most was his family. His family is a reflection of that love and a testament to his greatest achievement as husband, father and grandfather. No services will be held. Sontag on June 8, 1957 in Gagetown. He was born on April 25, 1939 in Croswell, the son of the late Nick and Anna (Adams) Wurmlinger. Jake married Doreen C. Reynolds on April 30, 1988 in Port Huron. Jake worked for Mopar- Marysville Local #375. He was an avid deer and pheasant hunter. He enjoyed his farm and home, baseball, and playing with his grandchildren. Jake was the type of person that would do anything for you. He is survived by his wife, Doreen Wurmlinger of Croswell; two sons, David Wurmlinger of Port Huron and Nick (Terra) Wurmlinger of St. Clair; two daughters, Christina Whitebread of Oklahoma and Debra (Paul) Reeves of Plymouth; two step daughters, Betty (Tom) Shuler of Croswell and Denise (Adam) McTaggart of Ft. Gratiot, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph (Mary Ann) Wurmlinger of Clio, Anthony Wurmlinger of Lexington and Frank (Vivian) Wurmlinger of Frankenmuth; one sister, Katherine Logghe of Peck; several nieces and nephews many cousins and many friends and good neighbors. Jake was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Peter Wurmlinger; his sisters, Helen Hayes, Anna Repp, Betty Frasard, Barbara Wojtas, Susan Wurmlinger and Mary Douglas. He was also preceded in death by an infant brother. A funeral mass was held at the St. Patricks Catholic Church with Fr. Christopher Coman officiating. John M. Drake, 62, of Hillsdale, passed away Sunday, July 26, 2009, at his home. He was born April 7, 1947, in Hillsdale, to Gene and Nina (Julian) Drake, she survives in Hillsdale. He was married March 11, 1978, to Eva Piddock and she also survives. John was a self employed farmer. He was a metal fabricator and welder, making several pieces of the equipment used on the farm. He was also a former trucker and a mechanic. Surviving besides his wife Eva and mother Nina, are two children, Michelle Drake of Bay City and John (Carri) Drake of Hillsdale; two grandchildren, Celesteya and Olivia; sisters, Margaret Drake of Grosse Pointe Park and Joan Marie Day of Bullhead City, Arizona and brother, Julian Drake of Monroeville, Indiana. Josephine Gleason Hadley Josephine Gleason, 90, of a lifetime Hadley resident, passed away Saturday (July 25, 2009). She was born April 10, 1919, in Hadley Township, to Howard and Bernice (Greene) Tunison. She married Ronald H. Gleason in 1942. Mrs. Gleason was a member of Hadley Community Church for many years, teaching Sunday School for many of those years. She enjoyed stamp collecting, canning and baking, travel and camping, as well as being a 4-H Leader. Josephine treasured 25 years of retirement with Mr. Gleason, they wintered in Texas, among many other fond memories. June E. Klopfenstein, age 86, of Burr Oak, Mich., peacefully went home to her Lord Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the Sturgis Hospital after a short illness. She was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Centreville, Mich., a daughter to the late Marcus and Ethel Marie (Bowersox) Lewis. On May 15, 1943, in Three Rivers, Mich., she married Clayton R. Klopfenstein, together they farmed for many years and raised three children. They celebrated 60 years together before he passed away on Aug. 23, 2003. June has been a resident of Burr Oak all of her life and after retirement spent many happy and fun filled years in Arcadia, Fla., where she spent six months of the year enjoying activities in the park and was very involved with Claytons music. June was a homemaker and had worked at Denton Mills, Clarks Plastic, and Burr Oak Rubber Products. She never missed an opportunity to attend a family function and lunch with friends was important to her, as well as her daily walks and riding her bicycle in Florida, staying fit was a great achievement for her. Her energy and positive attitude will be truly missed. Her love of God and her family were truly most important in her life. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth (Sharon) Klopfenstein of Burr Oak and Dale (Vicky) Klopfenstein of Sturgis; one daughter, Jean (Elwood) Burger of Howe, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Kolby Snyder of Portage, Mich., Kasey Klopfenstein of Colorado, Chad (Jeanine) Klopfenstein of Vicksburg, Mich., Wendy (Jason) McVicker of White Pigeon, Mich., Mike (April) Burger of Howe, Ind., Connie (Eugene) Parish of Sturgis, Keith (Judy) Triezenberg of Sturgis, and Craig (Deedra) Triezenberg of Broomfield, Colo.; 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Allan Lewis of Mendon, Mich., and Gailin Lewis of Wisconsin; one sister, Harriet Taylor of Sturgis. LESLIE LEN LESTER MARLETTE Leslie Len Lester, age 85, of Marlette, was born in Bridgewater, Michigan on April 10, 1924 to Lewis and Jenetta (Cole) Lester. At the age of one, his family moved to Marlette, where his father had a job opportunity at Riley Creamery and where Les would grow up in a Butler Road farmhouse. Les met Leona Hackel at Susie s Restaurant in Marlette where she worked and they fell in love. They were married in Caro, Michigan on the twenty first of February, 1945. Les and Leona were blessed with three children, Larry, Gary and Debra. Larry married Theresa and lives in Swartz Creek, where their two grandsons, Rob and Ali Lester and Philip and Tina Lester and great-grandson Cole also live. Gary Lester married Jill and live in Marlette, as well as grandchildren Mickey Hudson, husband Al, and great-grandchildren Casey and Alexis and Gary Lee Lester II and wife Katie. Debra Joyce Lester married Gary Muxlow and had children Tricia Muxlow, married to Tom Yaroch and David Muxlow, married to Kara, who all live in Marlette. Leona passed away on October 30, 1981. He was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Eldritz (Les), James, Lewis, Lawrence and sister, Louise. Sister Eunice Wills, brothers, Leland and Rich and sister-in-law, Letha Lester are surviving siblings. Verna Weaver was a companion of Les for years. Mary Ann Force was a special friend and neighbor for many years. Les was employed in many different occupations. He worked in Alaska, building roads, at Fischer Body, hauling beets, for Pete Losee in a body shop, at General Coach, for Len Sullivan and Bruce Lindsay setting up mobile homes and finally he retired from Metal Craft. Les and his brothers loved to coon hunt and always had their best friends along, the dogs. He also liked to spend time at the cabin up north. Lately, he enjoyed keeping track of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren until he passed away in peace on July 20, 2009 with his family at his side at the United Hospice Residence in Marlette. The funeral was held at the Marsh Funeral Chapel. Burial was at the Marlette Cemetery. Memorials may be made to United Hospice Service or the family. Lorabeth Moore Fitzgerald, 82, died July 31, 2009, at her summer home on Mackinac Island.  She grew up in Hillsdale and graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia.  She married John Warner Fitzgerald in 1953 and he predeceased her.  Her eldest son, Frank Moore Fitzgerald, also predeceased her.  Lorabeth is survived by two sons, Eric Stiles Fitzgerald and Adam Warner Fitzgerald both of Denver, Colo. A daughter-in-law, Ruth Davie Fitzgerald of Grand Ledge survives, as well as grandchildren, Ellen Lora and John Wesley, children of Frank and Ruth.  Lorabeth leaves a beloved niece and her husband, Emily and Paul Fullerton and their sons, Joseph and Samuel, of St. Ignace.  Lorabeth was active in civic affairs.  She served on the boards of the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Greater Lansing Safety Council and the Eaton County Parks and Recreation Commission.  She was elected to the Board of Trustees of the Grand Ledge Public Library.  She founded the Grand Ledge Cooperative Nursery, and was founding president of the Grand Ledge Area Historical Society.  She has been a long serving member of the Grand Ledge Opera House Authority and a member of the Grand Ledge Garden Club.  Lorabeth was on the board of the Loan and Deposit State Bank which became Michigan National Bank in Grand Ledge.  Lorabeth was active in affairs on Mackinac Island where the family has owned a summer cottage since 1961.  She was affiliated with Little Stone Church on Mackinac Island and First Congregational, United Church of Christ in Grand Ledge.  A memorial service will be at 11 a.m.  at the Grand Ledge Opera House, Wednesday with a reception immediately following.  Those wishing may contribute to the Grand Ledge Opera House Special Project Fund  121 S. She was born November 22, 1932, in Montreal, Canada, to Alfred and Katri (Nurmi) Winkler. Mrs. Lee treasured her time traveling and camping all over the United States by RV. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Margaret's main love was her family. Beloved Mother, Wife, Aunt and Friend Born February 9, 1931, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mary died peacefully at home on July 29, 2009, with her family at her side. Mary was the daughter of Leonard “Red” and Erma (Helber) Kirwan, both of Ann Arbor. Mary married John (Jack) Jacobson December 24, 1949, in Plymouth, Michigan, and they raised their family in Milan. They moved to Macon Township in 1973. She is survived by Jack, her husband of 60 years, her daughter Kathryn and husband Howard Anderson, her daughter Gail Jacobson, her son John and his wife Sylvia, her son Tom and his wife Kim Jacobson, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Kathleen Bolton; sister-in-law, Diane Kirwan; several nephews, one niece and her special friend, Margaretha Stoddard. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Leonard Kirwan. Mary was very active in life and generous of her time having volunteered for many years for St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Saline, Mich., and Tucson, Ariz. She was an avid golfer, enjoyed her family and traveling. Mary retired from the University of Michigan Office of Academic Planning and Analysis after more than 20 years. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. He was born on November 24, 1969 in Harbor Beach to Lylan (Swartz) Kucharczyk and the late Albert Kucharczyk. Mike and Annette Coulter were united in marriage on August 19, 2000. Mike was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, canning and gardening. Raymond W. Edwards, 86, of Coldwater, passed away Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater.  He was born June 9, 1923 in Chicago, Ill., to William and May (Huggett) Edwards.  He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Marine Corp on the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Theater, where he was a radio and radar operator on B-25’s. He enjoyed flying and was a member of the American Legion. In 1975, he married  Margaret M. Huegel, and she survives. Also surviving are five daughters Tammy (Richard) Bojanowski of Davisburg, Cheryl (Frank) Kelley of Okemos, Pamela (Edward) Barnes of Ortonville and Gwen Doss and Sheila Dills, both of Pontiac; five sons Gregory (Sharon) Edwards of Novi, Terry Edwards of Pontiac, Mark Edwards of Cass Lake, Raymond Edwards, Jr. of Rose Twp. and Thomas Edwards, also of Pontiac; sisters Myrtle Seimerof Rochester and Mabel  Stebleton of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepchildren James (Lory) Herrrington, Sandra (Daniel Brashear) Herrington and Lynn (Thom) McCurty; and 21 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Clara Titus; parents; one son Richard Edwards; and two stepsons Richard and John Herrington. Robert E. Muck, age 84, of Adrian died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home. He was born May 2, 1925, in Tipton, Mich., to Arthur L. and Berle M. (Stecker) Muck Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He was married to Nancy Gestwite on Oct. 16, 1948, in Manitou Beach. Robert had worked for Kewaunee Manufacturing for 41 years, retiring on Feb. 1, 1986. In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by two sons, Eugene R. Muck and his wife, Kay, of Cincinnati and Richard D. Muck of Adrian; a daughter and her husband, Janet and Greg Dillon of Adrian; a brother, Duane Muck of Adrian; a sister, Iris McDonald and her husband, Jerry, of Adrian; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Russel W. Roback, age 89, formerly of Adrian, passed away, Thursday, July 30, 2009, at Meadowlark Home in Sparta, Mich. Russel was born Jan. 7, 1920, in Beaverton, Mich., the son of Harry and Sophia (McKimmy) Roback. During World War II, he served his country in the United States Army Air Force. On Nov. 11, 1950, Russel married Lillian “Bobbi” Rowley in Angola, Ind. Russel and Bobbi celebrated 49 years of marriage prior to her death in 1999.  Russel retired from the General Motors plant in Tecumseh in 1985. He served as a Lenawee County Commissioner for 10 years and also as a Lenawee County Road Commissioner for six years.  Russel was very active with the UAW, serving as the International Representative, the President in Ypsilanti at the Willow Run Plant and Chairman of the Tecumseh GM Plant where he later retired. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner and a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. He was also a member of the Eagles, the VFW, Annis Fint Post #1584 and the American Legion. Russel served on the Lenawee United Way board for many years and also the National Council of Senior Citizens. Russel is survived by his daughter, Jackie (Jim) Davis of Greenville, Mich.; a grandson, Jack L. Remmele, Jr.; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Bobbi, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Donna; two sisters, Colleen Cech and Vivian Knapp; and two brothers, Howard Roback and Lauren Rohrbach. The funeral service for Russel will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home with Pastor Lawrence LaFollette officiating and military honors conducted by VFW Annis Fint Post #1584. Ruth E. Ashton, 90, of Ottawa, died Thursday, July 30, 2009, peacefully at her son’s residence in Michigan. She was born March 4, 1919, in McKeesport, Pa. to the late Joseph P. and Elizabeth (Ingram) Hofmann. On June 18, 1942, she married Alvin E. Ashton. He died Nov. 22, 1996. Survivors include her children, Diane (Mark) Bollinger of Lima, Ohio, A. Daniel (Nancy Ewing) Ashton of Jonesville; three granddaughters, Melissa (Chad) Smiley, Noelle (Shawn) Szydlyk, and Sarah (Alan Stevenson) Bollinger; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Ashton Szydlyk and Charlotte Jane Szydlyk; a brother, J.P. (Elizabeth) Hofmann of Sacramento, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Geraldine Schultz of Virginia. Mrs. Ashton was a retired teacher. She received her bachelor’s degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree from Indiana University, Purdue and attended Bluffton College. She founded Ashton Kindergarten in 1954 and was the director of the Migrant Program in Ottawa. She was a member of the Ottawa Presbyterian Church, the first female Elder, founded the church’s library and was the director of the Children’s Education at the church. She was a member of the Ottawa Eastern Star, Putnam County Friends of the Library, Putnam County International Reading Association, Putnam County Teacher’s Association, Putnam County Rail Fan, Friend’s of Maza Gallery at the University of Findlay and volunteered at Putnam Acres Care Center in Ottawa. Mrs. Ashton loved to play bridge, golf, was a great cook, a blood donor, enjoyed flower arranging, was well traveled and an avid collector. Graveside services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Harman Cemetery, Gilboa. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at the Ottawa Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Steve Elderbrock officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Love Funeral Home, Ottawa. Sister Beninyah Pattah (Batah), formerly known as Haniya Pattah, died on Aug. 1, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. Sister Beninyah was a member of the Dominican Sisters, Congregation of St. Catherine of Sienna, Mosul, Iraq. She was 64 years of age. Sister Beninyah was a teacher and catechist and taught for many years in villages and cities throughout Iraq. Due to illness, Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2005. Sister is survived by sisters: Sabria Khamrko, Habiba Mango, Salima Hoba of Sterling Heights, Mich.; Khmel Khamrko and Razkia Pattah of Farmington Hills, Mich., and brothers: Korkez Hamrko of Bloomfield Hills; Yacob Pattah and Habib Pattah of Farmington Hills, Mich. Sister Beninyah is also survived by 49 loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center, on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. Sue Carrie Melvin, loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, was born to John Rennels and Sarah Babet (Vincent) McClain on Oct. 4, 1936, in Bird Lake, Mich., and went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, in Enid, Okla. Sue grew up in Jerome and attended North Adams High School. She moved to sunny California, where she met the love of her life, William Melvin. In 1962, she married William D. Melvin in Spring Valley, California. Sue was a homemaker and enjoyed spending precious time with her family and grandchildren. Even though she was so far away from her parents and siblings, they were always close to her heart. When her daughter and son-in-law decided to move to Enid, she soon followed in 1997. There was no keeping her away from her grandchildren. She is survived by one daughter, Tina Rodriguez and husband Ramiro of Enid; three grandchildren, Candice Rose Chavez, Christian Michael Rodriguez, and Ciara Alexis Rodriguez; and one great-grandchild, Natalia Rose Chavez, all of Enid; four brothers, Tom, Johnny, Ronnie and Terry McClain; and three sisters, Dorothy Thomas, Barbara Griffin, and Claribel Cook. Tony Edward Jones, 46, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Saturday evening Aug. 1, 2009, at the Sturgis Hospital Emergency Room. He was born April 8, 1963, in Sturgis, a son to Fred N. “John” and Judy (Lung) Jones. Tony had resided in the Sturgis and Colon area his whole life. For the past five years he had been employed in the warehouse at Morgan Olson in Sturgis. He had also worked at Midwest Tool and Sturgis Tool and Die both in Sturgis. Tony enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, was a fan of NASCAR and was well known for his many stories. He loved time spent with his family and many friends. He is survived by his daughter, Heather Jones of Sherwood; mother, Judy Jones of Sturgis; two sisters,  Debra (Dave) Shipe and Dawn Casner both of Sturgis; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. His father; son, Nicholas Jones; sister, Shelly Mae Jones;  two nephews, Brandon Casner and Ryan Casner and grandparents and great-grandparents preceded him in death. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hackman Family Funeral HomesRosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091. Funeral services celebrating the life of Tony Jones will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In accordance with his wishes cremation will follow the service. Memorial donations would be appreciated to the family c/o: Heather Jones, 988 Oliverda Rd., Sherwood, MI 49089. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Virginia A. Mehregan, 72, of Monroe, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday at University Hospitals, Ann Arbor. She had been in poor health since December. |
WILHELMINA ROSE SCHROEDER OXFORD Wilhelmina Rose Schroeder, age 94, of Oxford, Michigan, formerly of Sandusky, died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Lapeer County Medical Care Facility in Lapeer, Michigan. She was born June 19, 1915 in St. Clair Shores, Michigan the daughter of the late John Hartman and Mary Kurtz. She married Herman Schroeder on November 14, 1936 in East Detroit, Michigan. Herman died on February 9, 1985 in Sandusky, Michigan. Mina is survived by three daughters, Joyce (Rich) Plotkowski of Mesa, Arizona, Ella Mae (Clifford) Schultz of Lake Orion, and Nancy (Bob) Page of Columbia, Maryland; fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Weber of Livonia, Michigan; several nieces and nephews. Mina was preceded in death by two brothers, John and Howard; two sisters, Lucille and Norma; and one daughter, Faye Beardsley. She was a member of the Home Extension and Cash Flower Clubs for many years. Mina also enjoyed quilting and making her delicious blueberry pie for her family. Funeral services were held at the Marsh Funeral Chapel, Sandusky with Rev. Michael Schulz of Oxford, Michigan officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sandusky. Pallbearers were; Clifford Schultz II, Dan Lawler, Karl Schroeder, Wayne Schroeder and Roger Page. Honorary Pallbearers were; James Gilmore, Robbie Schroeder and Andrew Lawler.
