Longtime county clerk dies

Monday, March 22, 2010 9:11 PM - Staff reports

One of Emmet County’s longest-serving clerks, Irene Granger, passed away Monday, March 22, at Munson Medical Center. She was 75. Her son, Jeff Granger, of Kewadin, said his mom hadn’t been feeling well and was admitted to the hospital Sunday. She died at 3:30 a.m. of septic shock infection. Jeff and his brother, Jim, were with her. Her death came as a shock to the family and those who knew her in Emmet County. “Irene was a legend,” said current county clerk Gail Martin, who served for eight years as Granger’s deputy clerk. “She was incredibly intelligent and remembered every little number and detail. She gave her heart and soul to Emmet County. In fact, she rarely took a day off. I used to have to beg her to take vacation time.” Granger first hired in February 1978 as deputy clerk under clerk Harriet Kilborn. In 1980, she became the county clerk and served six elected terms until her retirement in 2004. The Newfoundland native moved to Alanson in 1977 with her late husband, Gerald, who was born and raised in Alanson. The couple had three children and eight grandchildren. Granger’s funeral will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24 at the Sacred Heart Church, 143 Charles St., Elk Rapids. Visitation with the family will take place at 10 a.m., and a luncheon will follow the funeral service.
