Myrtle Marie Doerfler

Thursday, November 13, 2008 5:04 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Myrtle Marie Doerfler, 92, passed on to her next life peacefully on Nov. 9, 2008, after a year’s illness which she fought against with much courage. She was with her children and grandchildren at the time of her death. Myrtle was born almost 93 years ago on Nov. 21, 1915, on the small “sandhill” farm near Sylvania, Ohio; the second daughter of Otto and Caroline (Rasch) Steinfurth. She was preceded in death by her six sisters and two brothers, husband Arthur in 1993, and son Mark in 2003. From the time Myrtle was a small child, it was her responsibility to take care of her crippled German grandfather who was in a wheelchair. Whatever she did, Grandfather was always near. However, he taught her how to tame the wild birds and chickens that were part of the farm, and would hand carve her tiny tables and chairs and baskets out of peach pits and walnuts. Here is where she learned her early lessons of hard work and responsibility, and her love of family, animals and nature. After her brothers and sisters were born, the family moved to another small farm on the edge of Ottawa Hills in Toledo. In addition to her prior duties, she now learned and did a lot of the baking and cooking. When chores were finished, she spent many happy hours with her younger siblings and cousins; fishing, playing, and swimming in the 10-mile creek. She met her lifetime friend Jeanette Philabaum when they both attended Epiphany Lutheran Church, where she was a lifetime member, and Glann Elementary School. They went on to Libby and transferred and graduated from DeVillbiss High School, even working as nannies together so Myrtle could attend and graduate from Davis Business School. She then worked as an administrative assistant for several years at the shoe company in Toledo. She met and then married Arthur in 1939 and moved to the German village of Riga, Mich., where she lived for the next 68 years. Myrtle helped raise four children, taught Sunday School and volunteered with the PTA. She applied the principles of organic gardening to her apple orchard, a large vegetable garden and flower gardens, using her produce to can hundreds of quarts of fruit and vegetables every summer. She wanted to live by a woods, so she planted the back two acres into her private “woods,” and raised many orphaned animals, especially lambs, birds, chickens, dogs and cats. She was frequently called to help relatives recover from serious illnesses. After her children were raised, Myrtle went back to outside work as a sales person for a home party toy company. She was soon named a district manager for her ability to have top sales, and won five different cruises to the Caribbean and Hawaii. Myrtle retired at age 70 and again focused her energy on her home, having her “dream kitchen” built so she could bake, cook, can and freeze even more. Many friends and family were the recipients of her cookies, especially Christmas Lebkuchen, loaves of bread and canned goods, and of all kinds of jams, fruit and vegetables. She loved the 4th of July, having large family picnics for many years, and Christmas. After Thanksgiving, all other activities ceased so she could bake hundreds of cookies, send cards, and decorate her house to the hilt. For many years she would hang hundreds of foil snowflakes from the ceilings, lighted many trees, and decorated the house outside. Myrtle loved her six grandchildren dearly, always ready to let them stay overnight. She taught them her love of books, reading stories and teaching poems, singing songs, and playing games such as “Mrs. Flake” and “Ride the Pads” up and down the stairs, and allowing them outside adventures in the woods and with the chickens. She attended every concert, classroom event, or recital she was invited to, and tried to be “fair” with each child. At the age of 88, Myrtle was honored at a countywide banquet, receiving a state environmental award signed by Gov. Granholm for the years she worked as an organic gardener on her small acreage.  Today many small animals, songbirds, pheasants, quail and wood duck live in and near her woods. Many of her dreams and hard work have shown much fruit. Myrtle is survived by her three children, Tim Doerfler of Riga, John (Kathy) Doerfler of Britton and Caroline (Michael) Noveskey of Clinton; six grandchildren, Cara Noveskey of Jackson, Anya Noveskey of Clinton, Benjamin (Stephanie) Noveskey of Cheboygan, Sarah (Pete) Anderson of Jackson, Nathanial Doerfler of Britton and Kerry (Patrick) Zubke of Flushing. Also surviving are 14 nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 14, at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield from 2 to 5 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Viewing will continue on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m at the Epiphany Lutheran Church on Reynolds Road, Toledo, with funeral services beginning at 11:30 a.m. Following services, burial will be in Riga Cemetery.
