ALEXANDER GALLIGAN DECKERVILLE Alexander Galligan, Age 80 of Deckerville, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. He was born on December 15, 1927 in Manhattan, New York. He is the son of the late Alexander and Mae (Drnek) Galligan. Alexander married Carol Lynn Poynor on September 13, 1953 in Traverse City, MI. He served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church in Sandusky where he served as an Elder. He started his teaching career at the Old Mission School in 1956 and continued his career as principal and then superintendent. In 1974 he came to Deckerville and he retired in 1989 from Fennville School where he was superintendent. He is survived by his wife, Carol Galligan, three children, Christine Galligan, of South Carolina, Alex (Cathy) Galligan, of Deckerville and Julie Davis, of Deckerville. Two grandchildren, Renae Blaine and Ryan Davis and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a Son-in-law, Steve Davis. Memorial Services were held at the Community Of Christ Church, Sandusky with Elder Ken Diem of Carsonville officiating. Memorials may be made to the Community Of Christ Church, Sandusky or to the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York. Arrangements were made by the Hacker Funeral Parlors, Sandusky.

Albert Vree

Albert Vree August 8, 1916 - November 20, 2008 "My name is Albert Vree and this is my obituary. My life has been a journey of joy and faith in God. My wife, Willemina Petronella and I were married for 67 years. We were blessed with four beautiful children, Anke, Arie, Jay and Keith. I will love her, my family and my friends always. God bless all of you." Albert Vree, born August 8, 1916 in Weesp, the Netherlands, died peacefully with his wife and children at his side in Grand Rapids, MI on November 20, 2008. He started working at the age of 14 as a full-time office assistant at an Amsterdam import export company. While working full-time he completed his education. In 1939 Albert was drafted into the Dutch Army and served in the cavalry. He fought against the invading German Army and in May 1940 became a prisoner of war. After his release from captivity he became a member of the Dutch Resistance and also worked for the Dutch government in the department of food rationing. After the war he was awarded the War Resistance Commemoration Cross and the War Remembrance Cross for his heroic service in the Dutch Resistance. At the conclusion of the war he continued his government service and worked as a supervisor at the department of social security. In 1961 at the age of 45, Albert and his wife Willemina and their four children immigrated to the United States settling in Grand Rapids, MI. He was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company and retired from there at the age of 65. Albert was a member of Central Reformed Church and sang in the church choir for many years. Albert loved classical organ music. One of his other great joys was long distance swimming in any available body of water regardless of the temperature. As a young couple in the Netherlands, Albert and Willemina took extensive bike trips with their young family. After immigrating to the US they expanded their explorations with trips to almost every state in the union including a cruise to Alaska. Albert was a voracious reader who treasured both his Dutch and English books. He was also a passionate supporter of many charitable causes. He is survived by his wife, Willemina; his children, Anke and Phillip Pearson, Arie and Mary Vree, Jay and Sheri Vree, Keith and Marcie Vree; his 16 grandchildren, Saskia and Paul Koepke, Quincy and Lisa Pearson, Adam and Theresa Vree, Steve and Stacey Vree, Ryan and Megan Vree, Nicholas Vree, Melissa and Jim Farris, Jared and Bryce Vree, Amber Aspinwall; his seven great-grandchildren, Reece, Leighton, Emersyn and Drake Koepke, Quincy Pearson Jr., Lily Vree and Adelle Farris; his sisters, Riek Sparnaay, Agnes Wansink; several nieces and nephews and many friends. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at the Holland Home Van Andel Pavilion for the love and care given to Albert the last few months. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m. in Central Reformed Church, 10 College Ave., N.E. Burial in Courtland Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Memorial Contributions to the Central Reformed Church Music Ministry would be appreciated. Beatrice M. Siemen 1923-2008 Beatrice M. Siemen, 84, Harbor Beach, passed away Friday, November 14, 2008 at Courtney Manor of Bad Axe. She was born on December 18, 1923 in Harbor Beach to the late Anthony and Mary (O'Neil) Pohl. Beatrice and Bernard Siemen were united in marriage on August 9, 1941 in Harbor Beach. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1991. Beatrice was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, where she was a past president of the Altar Society. She enjoyed playing cards, flowers, playing bingo, baking cookies, going to the casino and being with her family and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters, Janet Volmering, Ruth, Marjorie (Carl) Booms, Bad Axe, Nancy (Tom) Goniwiecha, Harbor Beach, Joyce (Rich) McDonald, Bad Axe and Betty (Thomas) Tenbusch, Harbor Beach; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Travis Booms; brother, Lawrence Pohl and sisters, Alma Schroeder and Hazel Tenbusch. Funeral mass was held on Monday, November 17, 2008 in the St. Anthony's Catholic Church of Helena. Fr. Peter Nwokoye officiated, with burial taking place in the church cemetery. Bernard C. Maschke 1919-2008 Bernard C. "Ben" Maschke, 89, Port Hope, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital. He was born May 2, 1919 in Port Hope to the late William and Mabel (Hoffman) Maschke. He and Lucille Bender were united in marriage on August 17, 1940 in Port Hope. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church of Port Hope, and worked for the Huron Milling Company and Hercules for 40 years. He is survived by his wife Lucille of Port Hope; two daughters, Linda (Doug) Howard, Harbor Beach and Myrna Lamb, Davison; three grandchildren, Becky (Tom) Block, Rhonda (Rick) Beard and Sue (Ed) Discher; four great-grandchildren, Travis, Heidi, Lindsay and Noel; three step great-granddaughters, Ashley, Shauna, and Jamie (Matt) and their children. He was preceded in death by a son Bernard "Butch" Maschke in 2001, three grandsons, Mike Howard, Kevin Lamb and Corey Block; three brothers, John (Jack), William, and Darcey Maschke; and four sisters, Margarete Emerick, Bertha Young, Gertrude Fuerst, and Viola Sewray. He is the son of the late Paul and Mary (Tijerina) Deanda. He is survived by three brothers, Robert (Corrine) Deanda of Niles; David (Malinda) Deanda of Troy; Thomas Deanda of Ft. Gratiot. One sister, Linda (James) Black, of Sandusky and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Mary (Tijernia) Deanda. Cassie Kopek 1916-2008 Cassie Kopek, 92, Caseville, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Scheurer Hospital Long Term Care in Pigeon while under hospice care. Cassie was born April 13, 1916 in Detroit to the late Casimer and Bernice (Stankiewicz) Zaloga. She married Walter J. Kopek at Transfiguration Catholic Church in Detroit on July 4, 1936. Walter preceded her in death on July 4, 1982. She lived in Detroit until moving to Caseville in 1973. She was an active member of St. Roch Catholic Church, where she was on the Women's Society and was sacristan for many years. She was a member of the Caseville Eagles Auxiliary and Caseville Retirement Club. She enjoyed sewing, reading, cooking and gardening. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia (Al) Gagnier, Warren; son Raymond (Terry), Warren; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Ed Zaloga and sister Bunny Zaloga. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter and son, Rev. Robert Kopek S.J. in 2003. Funeral mass was held on Monday, November 17, 2008 at St. Roch Catholic Church with Fr. Kenneth Yaroch presiding. Burial took place in St. Roch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Robert W. Daniel was born on May 21, 1938 in Austin Township to the late Walter and Susan (McMillan) Walsh. He attended Ubly High School. Daniel then moved to Detroit to drive heavy equipment for the road construction industry. He retired in 1996 and became a driver for Spartan Food Stores for ten years. He attended St. Alexander Catholic Church in Farmington Hills and St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Florida. He was a member of the Teamster Local. Daniel enjoyed gardening and sports, especially the Detroit Tigers. Daniel is survived by his three daughters, Roxann (James) Gracyalny of Springdale, AK, Crystal (Joseph) Borso of Mason, TN, Julie (Doug) Parks of Canal Winchester, OH; seven grandchildren, Joseph, Charity, Kimberly, Chad, Brent, Jacob and Zachary; one sister, Gertrude Susan Brown of San Diego, CA; two brothers, Louis (Rosalie) Walsh and Walter "Joseph" (Patricia) Walsh, both of Ubly. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Leo Walsh, Beatrice Bauman, Lila Lamphere, Michael, Maurice, Raymond and Mark "Pete" Walsh. Dr. John Kamps, age 90, of College Station, TX, formerly of Zeeland, passed away November 16, 2008.  Dr. Kamps served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a P.O.W in Germany for two∏  years. After the war, he returned to Michigan and became a pastor. During his ministry he was the pastor at three churches. John then became an educator and taught at various schools. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in College Station, TX and a member of the Sgt. Alvin Jonker VFW Post 2326 in Grand Haven, MI.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey and George Kamps.  John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Ruth Kamps; his children, Michael Kamps of Rockwall, TX, Carol and Mark Holtzapple of College Station, TX, Patricia and Gregory Harris of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, and Ray and Janet Kamps of College Station, TX; seven grandchildren; sisters, Marcella Bosch of Borculo, Lois and Don Terpstra of Holland, Eunice Yankiv of Columbus, NC; and brother, Sherwin and Ruth Kamps of Zeeland.  Funeral services for Dr. Kamps will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at Yntema Funeral Home, 251 S. Dwight V. Knauss, age 87, went to heaven to meet his wife, parents, brothers and sisters Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008. He was born to Orange A. and Adelia M. Knauss on Jan. 17, 1921, with his twin sister, Marion, who passed away at birth. He was raised on a farm along with his brothers and sisters. Dwight graduated from Clayton High School, Class of 1939. He enjoyed all kinds of hunting, especially moose hunting with his buddies in Canada.  He worked at Simplex and hauled milk for his brother-in-law, Arlo Foster, until he went to serve his country in World War II, as a Sergeant of the Army from 1942-1946 when he was discharged. Upon returning from service Dwight met and married Betty June Mottor on Dec. 17, 1949. He went to work for Michigan Milk Produces Association where he retired after 27 years. He is survived by three daughters, Linda (Arden) Robinson of Adrian, Beckie Knauss (Steve Nichelson) and Pam (Dale) Robinson, both of Clayton; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Luellia Potts and Media VanNorman. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 48 years, Betty; three brothers, five sisters and one great-grandchild. The funeral service for Dwight will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 at Wagley Funeral Home with Dr. Ben Fulayter officiating. Burial will follow at Dover Center Cemetery. Edris E. Murray, 87, of Hillsdale, passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born July 21, 1921 in Montpelier, Ohio to Rex and Florence (Samm) Delcamp. She was married April 19, 1947 in Angola, Ind. to Dow Murray and he survives. Edris was the former owner of Parisian Beauty Salon in Hillsdale. She was a graduate of Pittsford High School in 1939, valedictorian of her class.  She attended Riggs Beauty School.  She was past president and member of the Lady Elks, member of Hillsdale Business and Professional Women, the Hillsdale Community Theater and member of the National Hair Dressers Association. Surviving besides her husband Dow of 61 years are three sons, Jeff (Shirley) Haskins of Emory, Texas, Jon (Diane) Murray of Bradenton, Fla. and Jerre Murray of Sarasota, Fla; daughter, Jill Langs of Hillsdale; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edwin Delcamp of Maumee, Ohio and Stuart (Judy) Delcamp of Punta Gorda, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Walter “Pat” Haskins and two grandchildren, Jaime and Jared Langs. Funeral services for Edris Murray will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with the Rev. Alan Fenstermaker officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Elwin Van Ommen, age 81, of Zeeland, went to be with his Lord Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Tender Care of Holland.  Elwin was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War.  He was a lifelong member of the American Legion Post #33.  Elwin was an active member of the community leading the Memorial Day parades and obtaining the Zeeland Cemeteries Veteran's Monument.  He retired from K-Line and the Grand Roller Rink.   He is survived by his wife of of 56 years, Ethel;  and children, Mary and Randy Roelofs of Holland, Cindy and David Bagby of Zeeland; grandchildren, Randy Jr. and Jill Roelofs, Jill and Rick Ver Hey, Jared Bagby; three great-grandchildren; brother, Calvin and Mary Van Ommen of Holland; brother and sisters-in-law, Vern and Loie De Vries of Zeeland, Clara Overzet of Zeeland; many nephews, nieces and cousins.  The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2008 at Ebenezer Reformed Church, 5166 Ottogan in Holland. Reverend Todd Krygsheld will be officiating.  Burial with military honors will be in Zeeland Cemetery. (Williams) Waidelich. She married Leo A. Huff on November 2, 1940 in Grand Rapids. He survives. Leo and Evelyn moved to the Hillsdale County area in 1946 after Leo returned from the war. Evelyn was a former member of the Locust Corners Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, an active member of the First Baptist Church in Hudson, an auxiliary member of Gideon’s International and the Friendship Club of Locust Corners. Evelyn enjoyed quilting, sewing and gardening. Surviving Evelyn are her husband of 68 years, Leo; two daughters, Judy (John) Garris of Quebec City, Quebec and Diane Cudney of Hudson; son, Wayne (Elaine) Huff of Brooklyn; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Purdy of Wyoming; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Evelyn was preceded in death by her daughter, Donna Mae Cutchall; parents; one sister; and two brothers. Gerald A. Himmel 1936-2008 Gerald A. Himmel, 72, Caseville, died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at his home while under hospice care. Jerry was born October 10, 1936 in Chandler Township to the late John and Theresa (Gintner) Himmel. He grew up in the area and graduated from Pigeon High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1957. After being discharged from the Navy, Jerry moved to Detroit and lived there from 1958 to 1988. He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 1988, after 25 years of service, many of them as a helicopter pilot. He moved to Caseville in 1988. Even after retiring, he worked part-time for the Caseville Police Department. He enjoyed boating, ham radio, and his home near Wildfowl Bay. He is survived by his son, Michael (Lona), Shelby Township; daughter, Stacy (Jerrold) Himmel Jacobson, Arcadia, Fla.; granddaughters, Lauren, Erika, Hannah Lee and sisters, Frances Richmond, Pigeon and Barbara (Patrick) Dell, Caseville. He was preceded in death by his two-year-old daughter, Michelle Lee in 1961 and brothers John, Duane and Robert. Funeral services were held Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville with Fr. Kenneth Yaroch officiating. Urn burial with military honors took place at St. Roch Cemetery. Gloria attended Bankers Baptist Church. Besides her husband, Ronald, she is survived by her father, Ora Carlisle of Hillsdale; three daughters, Oralie (Gary) Amrhein and Toni (Robert) Ashton both of Jonesville and Donna Thompson of Hillsdale; an adopted son, Gary Estel of Jonesville; a brother, Clyde (Mary) Carlisle of Quincy; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Merle and one sister. Cremation has taken place.  There will be a memorial service at a later date. Harold J. Crafts, age 91, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away early Saturday morning, Nov. 15, 2008, at his home. He was born Jan. 10, 1917, in Watervliet, Mich., a son of the late John B. and Nora M. (Polmanteer) Crafts. He had resided in Sturgis since 2001, coming from Kalamazoo where he lived from 1923-2001. On July 8, 1941, he married Beverly J. Wheeler in Kalamazoo. Nearly all of Harold’s working life was involved in the produce business. For many years he served as director of Produce Operations for the National Tea Company in Kalamazoo and Meijer’s of Grand Rapids. Following his retirement Harold served as the manager of the Elks Country Club in Kalamazoo, a position he held for eight years. For over 40 years Harold was an active member of the B.P.O.Elks #50 in Kalamazoo, serving for 10 years on the Board of Elks Major Projects for special needs children. He also served as the Elks State Chairman of Major Projects for 10 years. Harold was always willing to give of his time to others and for 27 years he was a volunteer at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Battle Creek. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 67 years, Beverly; one son, Daniel J. (Linda) Crafts of Sturgis; a grandson, Matthew (Jennifer) Freeland of Portage; two great-grandchildren, Kaitrin Elise Funches and Joshua Daniel Freeland, both of Portage; a niece, Ellen (Tim) McKeever and a nephew, Steven Eakley. Preceding him in death  were his parents; a daughter, Susan J. Bouwman; and a sister, Ruth Eakley. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation, and private burial of the ashes will take place at Mount Everest Cemetery in Kalamazoo at a later date. A memorial service and Benevolent Protective Order of Elks service celebrating the life of Harold Crafts will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Thurston Woods Village Villa Dining Room.  Harold L. Frye, 91, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2008, at James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn.   Mr. Frye was a native of Sturgis, Mich., and had lived in Johnson City, Tenn., for the past several years.   He was a son of the late Bernice and Katherine Linseisen and was also preceded in death by three brothers, Cleon, Leon and Howard Frye and one sister, Leone Miller.   He was a graduate of Sturgis High School, Sturgis, Mich., and a member of the Religious Science Church. Mr. Frye was an actor and singer and was known by his stage name “Hal Frye.” He enjoyed singing and traveling and volunteered to sing at many functions.   He was a life member of the Ex-Prisoners of War, a member of the Blinded Veterans Association, the Disabled American Veterans and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. He was a Charter member of the ICL Institute of Learning at East Tennessee State University. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.   Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Jessie Dugger Frye; and nieces and nephews, Dixie Pittenger, Doug Frye, Debbie Stevens, Mary Ann Byler, Kathy Miller, Karen Sobeski, Garnetta Weigt and Juanita Miller.   A military graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday,  at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tenn.  Minister Bruce Shawver will officiate. Mr. Frye appreciated the care and courtesy shown him at Mountain Home Veteran’s Home and the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Jack Delbert Garman, 78, of Manistee, Mich., and formerly of White Pigeon, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008, at West Shore Medical Center, Manistee after a short illness. He was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Elkhart, Ind., a son of John Earl Garman and Myrtle Goldie Martin, and graduated in 1949 from Elkhart High School. Jack resided for 43 years in Elkhart, 10 years in Shipshewana, Ind., five years in Oregon, 12 years in White Pigeon, and had lived in Manistee since 2000. On Oct. 12, 1973, he married Toni (Grant) Livingston in Elkhart, and they renewed their vows on Aug. 13, 1999, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in White Pigeon. A Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, he was employed in the mobile home industry, retiring in 1992. Then, he served as a Wal-Mart greeter from 1992-2000 in Sturgis and from 2000-2008 in Ludington. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church of White Pigeon, Moose Lodge #1128 of Manistee and Vandalia Masonic Lodge #290, a former member of Scottish Rites of South Bend, Ind., a former Saladin Shriner, a life member of Cass County Shriners and life member of the DAV #88. Surviving are: his wife, Toni Garman of Manistee; son, Gary Lambdin of Manistee; three daughters, Vickie Jackson and Jacque Yoder of Elkhart, Ind., and Kelley (Ronald) Livingston-Masters of Frankfort, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dave (Hazel) Garman of  Tennessee and Vern (Jean) Garman of Elkhart; sister, Kate Thalheimer of Elkhart; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were a son, Scott Livingston, a brother, George Garman and his parents. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today at the Farrand Funeral Home, White Pigeon. Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, White Pigeon, with Rev. Richard Altine officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, White Pigeon. James Boyce III, 78

James Boyce III, age 78, of Saugatuck, died early Friday, November 21, 2008, peacefully at home with his family.  Jim was born in Saugatuck on May 18, 1930 to James and Ruth (Bauhahn) Boyce and grew up on a farm on 65th Street in Laketown Township.  He attended Gibson School and was a graduate of Holland High School.  From 1962-1984 Jim and three other partners owned and operated the Saugatuck Yacht Service on Holland Street in Saugatuck. Jim was very active in the First Congregational Church of Saugatuck.  He served as a Deacon and Trustee and sang in the choir for 60 years.  For the City of Saugatuck he was a member of the Planning Commission and Board of Review.  Jim was also a part-time police officer for nine years and a volunteer fireman for 40 years.  After retirement, Jim enjoyed his family and home, plowing snow and helping his neighbors and friends.  He was a familiar figure in many parades and outings with his beloved Model A Ford truck. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Marjory (Mrs. Jack) Wilkin of Laketown Township and Ruth Wilkinson of Corona, CA. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Peggy); eight children, Cathy and Joe Brockington, Vicki Boyce and Peter Jorgensen of Grosse Pointe Shores, James W. Boyce, Linda and Mark Kinnaman, Ginna and Gordon Berghuis, Robert and Kristyn Boyce, Michael Boyce, Christopher and Jessica Wallace-Boyce, all living in the Saugatuck area;  one sister, Patricia Nunez, resides in Mesa, AZ.  He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews in Michigan and California. A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, November 24 at 1:00 p.m. at First Congregational Church of Saugatuck, Rev. Edith Winter and Rev. Liam Battjes officiating.  Visitation is scheduled for Sunday, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Dykstra Life Story Funeral Homes, Saugatuck Chapel, 520 Lake Street.  Memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church of Saugatuck, Memorial Fund.  A family interment ceremony will be in May 2009 in Riverside Cemetery. Janice L. Engle, age 81, of Adrian, passed away Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at Grand Court. She was born Jan. 5, 1927, in Richmond, Ind., the daughter of Walter and Mynta (Reger) Engle. Jan graduated from Richmond High School in 1945. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Olivet College and her master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Jan began her teaching career in Onsted. She also worked at Blissfield Elementary School, where she served as principal for many years. She later went back to teaching, retiring after 38 years of service. Jan also worked for the Lenawee Intermediate School District. Spending time with family and friends was very important to Jan.  She also loved to attend auctions and rummage sales. Jan’s cancer support group was very special to her. Surviving Jan is her sister, LaVaughn Douglas of New Castle, Ind.; two nieces, DeeAnn Douglas, also of New Castle, and Woodice Fuller of Lisle, Ill.; and a nephew, Austin Douglas, Jr., of Trafalgar, Ind.  Also surviving are her best friend and partner, Gertie Mitchell of Adrian; the entire Mitchell family who adopted Jan many years ago; and her caregivers who are part of that family, Virginia and Marvin Rye, Pamela Bayles, Karen Lewis, and Carol Becker, all of Adrian. Jan was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, June Conway. The funeral service for Jan will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Wagley Funeral Home with the Rev. Darrell Hyder officiating.  Burial will follow at East Rome Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Monday from 11 a.m. until the service. Born May 4, 1954, in Hillsdale, she was the daughter of Thomas and Dorothy (Bartell) McCalla. Jean graduated from Jonesville High School in 1972 and had been employed at ConAgra Foods in Quincy. In her leisure time, Jean enjoyed flower gardening, camping, bicycling and walking on the beach. She especially loved time spent with her grandchildren, baking and decorating for the holidays. On Aug. 31, 2001, she married Jerry Kohler and he survives, along with two daughters, Shannon (Jimmie) VanDusen of Hillsdale, and Erica (Jeff Hite) Barker of Waldron; one son, Shaun (Missy) Barker of Osseo; one brother, Terry McCalla of Angola, Ind.; nine grandchildren, Zachary, Taylor, Devin and Jadyn VanDusen, Damien, Seth and Zoey Barker and Kierstyn Barker and Uriah Hite; one nephew, Tim McCalla. Her parents and one brother, Steven McCalla, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with Pastor Mark Case officiating. Hall, age 88, of Holland, died Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Holland Hospital under Hospice care.  She was born and raised on the east side of Michigan and lived most of her life in Oxford.  She was a graduate of Oxford High School in 1938.  Jean served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps. during World War II.  She and her husband owned and operated a local insurance office in Oxford for many years.  She also worked for the United States Postal Service for 25 years.  Jean moved to Holland, Michigan in 1985.  She was a former member of Oxford Methodist Church and a current member of First United Methodist Church of Holland.    She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Hall; and daughter, Nancy Heyns.  Her family includes grandchildren, Allison and Joe Davelaar of Holland, Adam Heyns of Holland; great-grandson, Adam Davelaar; son-in-law, John Heyns of Holland; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews. She was a private executive secretary for Jack and Chuck Kirsch at the Kirsch Company for 31 years, retiring in 1981.  She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, and she enjoyed traveling all over the world. Surviving are: one son, Paul (Joanne) Roe III of Sturgis; granddaughter, Kathy (Thomas) Fean of South Bend, Ind.; three great-grandchildren, Gregory, Tim, and Mary Fean of South Bend, Ind.; and a brother, Joseph Jones of Houston, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. The family will receive friends and relatives from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. He had been employed in the auto industry and had also worked in the curb and gutter business. Survivors include his wife, Mary (Hueston) Haglund, whom he married April 4, 1975, one daughter Loretta (Brad) Lane of Utah, one stepdaughter Arlene Ledbetter of Caledonia, four sons Michael (Estralita) Haglund of Minnesota, Darrell (Nadine) Haglund of Arizona, Jon Haglund and David Haglund both of Utah, three sisters Esther McFarland, Mable (Dean) Dagen, Dorothy Osse, one brother John (Shirley) Haglund all of Minnesota and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member and former pianist of Central United Brethren Church, Montpelier and the past few years attended Lake View Church at Merry Lake. Also surviving are two sons, Shane E. She was born August 17, 1922 in Sandusky,MI, daughter to the late Allen and Sarah (Hendershot) Hall. Marjorie married Grant L. Burgett on April 2, 1944 in Oregon. They divorced in 1964. She then married Olin (Al) Danhauser January 17, 1967 in Grand Rapids, MI. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1980. Marjorie held several jobs through out her life and was a foster-grandparent at Maple Valley Elementary School in Sandusky, MI for several years. She loved gardening, her flowering and spending time with her family. She is survived by her son Richard G. (Barbara) Burgett of College Station,TX, daughter Dorene K. (Garth) Enders of Sandusky, MI, 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, sister Audrey VanNorman of Wyoming,MI, sister Patricia Boegner of Edwardsburg, MI, and several niecesand nephews. Mary Charon (Roberts) Pergolizzi, 66, of Ronkonkoma, N.Y., formerly of Tecumseh, passed away Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, surrounded by her family. She was born Feb. 6, 1942, in Adrian, the daughter of Gerald and Gertrude (Badgley) Roberts. She married Joseph Pergolizzi of New York, with whom she shared 40 years of marriage.     Mary was in a league of her own; she fought for our country as a member of the Air Force from June 1961 to January 1963, making the rank of E-2 in August 1961. Mary was a member of the 1960 Tecumseh Graduating Class. She was employed by Audiovox for 30 years, retiring in 2007. Mary was a devoted and loving mother,  grandmother and sister, who enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Mary is survived by her beloved husband, Joseph; two daughters,  Theresa (James) Weston and Mary Pergolizzi of New York; twin sons, Michael (Michelle) Pergolizzi of New York and Joseph Pergolizzi at home; one brother, Gary (Joan) Roberts of Tecumseh; sand seven grandchildren. She is also survived by grandchildren Debbie and Greg, Cindy, Nancy and Du Wayne, Mary, Michelle and Mark, Marsha and Dan, Mike and Karen, Amy and Cal, Andy and Lisa, Katey, Melissa, David and Emma. She leaves 22 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Mary is survived by a sister Madeline (Fred) Duwve and brother William Fitzpatrick. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a sister, Catherine Mann, and brothers James and Tom Fitzpatrick; granddaughter, Cathy Sue Johnson; and a son-in-law, Everett Johnson. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. (Mother Dear) Age 102, on November 16, 2008, the Angels gently carried her to Heaven to join her husband Walter Nobles (1991), and children, Ted Nobles (1979), Betty Nobles Hardwick (1987), William Walter Nobles (1993), Faye Nobles Johnson (2005) and Larry Nobles (2008). Mother Dear was born February 19, 1906, in Kelleyton County, Alabama. She was married to Walter Nobles for 65 years. From this union they had 10 children. Mother Dear was baptized, saved and filled with the Holy Ghost, and was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama where she served as Choir Director and Pianist. She received the Holy Ghost at age 27 and became a member of Emanuel Temple Church of God in Christ, in Birmingham (Smithfield), Alabama. In 1969 she and her husband moved to Detroit, Michigan to be near their children. Willie Gaddis Nobles lived a long, blessed and holy life, and will be remembered for her great Faith and Great Love. In celebration of her 100th Birthday Mother Dear received a personal birthday greeting from President George W. Bush, a State of Michigan Proclamation Tribute from Governor Jennifer Granholm, and State Representatives Virgil Smith and George Cushingberry, and a Testimonial Resolution from the Detroit City Council. Mother Dear was also featured on Channel 4's WDIV Sunshine Award. Surviving children are Norma Hamilton, Bessie Ikner, Carolyn Thompson, Joyce Johnson, and Barbara Behan. Mother Dear loved 19 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren and 10 great-great grandchildren. The Funeral Service, Saturday, November 22 at Solomon's Temple Church, 2341 E. RAYMOND DUNSFORD MARLETTE Raymond Dunsford, age 98 passed away peacefully Friday, November 14, 2008 at Marlette Hospice Residence. He was born February 20, 1910 in Marlette, son of the late John and Minnie (Smith) Dunsford. Mr. Dunsford returned to Marlette in 2007 after residing in Nashville, Tennessee for 30 years. He graduated from Marlette High School in 1928 where he excelled in football, basketball, baseball and track. He married Eva Lambert on March 30, 1935 in Marlette. She preceded him in death April 13, 1976. Ray owned and operated Ray's Men's Wear in Marlette from 1950 until his retirement in 1976. After retiring he moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he married Ruth Smith on January 9, 1977. Ray was a member of the First Church of Nazarene, Nashville, Tennessee, Marlette First United Methodist Church and also a member of the Gideon's International. He is survived by his wife Ruth of Marlette; two sons Paul (Florence) Dunsford of Marlette and Gary (Jean) Dunsford of Mt. Juliet, TN; granddaughters Darlene (David) Stone of Mattawan and Laura (Mark) Smith of Manchester, TN; grandsons Jeffrey (Tammy) Dunsford of Marlette, Lon Dunsford of Marlette and David (Heather) Dunsford of Smyrna, TN; and ten great grandchildren. Rose B. Volz 1920-2008 Rose B. Volz, 88, Sebewaing, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Northwood Meadows Assisted Living Facility in Cass City under hospice care following a two year illness. She was born June 1, 1920 near Ubly, daughter of the late John and Bertha (Rothe) Schneider. She was united in marriage to Harlon H. Volz on March 30, 1940 in Pigeon. He preceded her in death on January 17, 2000. Rose was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and especially liked to pass the time playing bingo. She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband for many years. She is survived by one son, Wesley (Shirley) Volz, Unionville; one daughter, Diane (James) Jamieson, Cass City; five grandchildren, Stephanie and Lindsay Jamieson, Rita Papp, Roxanne Logan and James Volz; two great-granddaughters, Angela Papp and Abigail Logan; two great-grandsons, Justin Papp and Dylan Logan; three sisters, Matilda Gintner, Elkton,Lena McCallum, Sebewaing and Irene Partika, Ubly and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, Bruce Volz; one sister, Regina Smith; stepsister, Mary (Reimann) Finkbeiner and stepbrother, Joe Reimann. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 17, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing. Rev. Michael Boyer officiated, with burial taking place in the Silverlawn Cemetery. PLANO, Texas — Earl Louis Martineau, 60, of Plano, Texas, died peacefully at home on November 15, 2008, after a long bout with cancer.Earl was born on April 10, 1948, to Katherine and Oliver "Ollie" Martineau. He grew up in Traverse City and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1966. He was a varsity player on the basketball and football teams and coached his son's Little League teams. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1970 with a degree in Biology. Earl enjoyed a career in the restaurant industry beginning with Burger Chef and Arby's Roast Beef in Traverse City. He advanced to Vice President of the Southern Region of Arby's in Texas. In addition he spent time with Burger King, Burger Street and most recently as an executive with Sonic Corporation.Earl is survived by a son Michael; a daughter Megan; a grandson Ayden; sisters, Kathy Powers and Ginny Fey; and several nieces and nephews.
