Terry Reisch, Ph.D., age 49, Professor of German at Hillsdale College, died on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 after a brief, intense struggle with cancer. He was at home under Hospice care at the time of his passing with family and friends at his side. Dr. Reisch was born Oct. 1, 1959 in Reading, Pa. to Marlene (Showalter) Reisch and Martin L. Reisch, who both survive their son.  After graduation from Wilson High School in West Lawn, Pa. he went on to receive his B.S. in Education, German and French from Millersville State University in 1981, his M.A. in German from Penn State University in 1984, and his Ph.D. in German from State University of New York-Albany in 1992.  His educational experience before coming to Hillsdale College also included a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship in Braunshweig, Germany in 1983 and a Lectureship in Germany at the University of Wurzburg in 1986. From 1988 until his death Dr. Reisch taught in the German department at Hillsdale College and will be remembered by his students as a fine teacher and engaging personality. Highlights of his teaching career, which receive special praise from students, were summer sessions in the German department's overseas program and seminars on Holocaust literature. Exile and Holocaust studies were Dr. Reisch’s areas of academic specialization and along with his scholarly articles and presentations is his recently published book, Hitler’s Hostages, co-authored with Charles E. Harrar, which concentrates on the degradation of Germans under the Nazi regime. In recognition of his many contributions to the College, Dr. Reisch was promoted to full professor during his illness. Colleagues will sorely miss Professor Reisch and especially telling will be the absence of his quick and acerbic wit. Terry Reisch married Maria (Moreno-Perez) in 1983 and their son Sebastian was born in 1991. The clever, rather reserved German boy from western Pennsylvania and the sharp, feisty Cubana from New York City, a pair straight out of central casting for the opposites attract marriage, as most young academic couples, had their share of moving in their early days until Terry received his post at Hillsdale. They set up their final home in Hillsdale on Broad Street in 1994. Terry's hobbies included house renovation, woodworking, NASCAR and the odd round of golf. The family's energies had the last few years been focused on the fortunes of the Hillsdale High School cross-country team of which Sebastian was a member.  Terry, a cross-country runner himself, was an avid supporter of the team and was cheered in his illness by its great success this year. He was particularly proud of the team’s character and the friendships he made through his association with coaches, runners and other team supporters were of the utmost importance to him. Other than his parents, wife and son, Terry is survived by his sister, Bonnie (Reisch) Bunce and her husband David Bunce of Naples, Fla.; along with their children, William E. Bunce II and Jonathan T. Bunce; nephews, Richard Reisch of Bernville, Pa., Edward J. McGlone III of Long Island, N.Y., Louis A. Marinaro of Westchester, N.Y.; and great-niece, Averi Reisch of Bernville, Pa.  Terry was preceded in death by his older brother, Martin T. Reisch in 2000. A memorial service for Terry Reisch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Markel Auditorium located in the Sage Center on the Hillsdale College campus. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Memorial donations in Terry Reisch’s name may be directed to Hillsdale Hospice, to whose members the Reisch family wishes to express its profound gratitude, or to a charity of one's choice.
