Albert Vree August 8, 1916 - November 20, 2008 "My name is Albert Vree and this is my obituary. My life has been a journey of joy and faith in God. My wife, Willemina Petronella and I were married for 67 years. We were blessed with four beautiful children, Anke, Arie, Jay and Keith. I will love her, my family and my friends always. God bless all of you." Albert Vree, born August 8, 1916 in Weesp, the Netherlands, died peacefully with his wife and children at his side in Grand Rapids, MI on November 20, 2008. He started working at the age of 14 as a full-time office assistant at an Amsterdam import export company. While working full-time he completed his education. In 1939 Albert was drafted into the Dutch Army and served in the cavalry. He fought against the invading German Army and in May 1940 became a prisoner of war. After his release from captivity he became a member of the Dutch Resistance and also worked for the Dutch government in the department of food rationing. After the war he was awarded the War Resistance Commemoration Cross and the War Remembrance Cross for his heroic service in the Dutch Resistance. He was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company and retired from there at the age of 65. Albert was a member of Central Reformed Church and sang in the church choir for many years. Albert loved classical organ music. One of his other great joys was long distance swimming in any available body of water regardless of the temperature. As a young couple in the Netherlands, Albert and Willemina took extensive bike trips with their young family. After immigrating to the US they expanded their explorations with trips to almost every state in the union including a cruise to Alaska. Albert was a voracious reader who treasured both his Dutch and English books. He was also a passionate supporter of many charitable causes. He is survived by his wife, Willemina; his children, Anke and Phillip Pearson, Arie and Mary Vree, Jay and Sheri Vree, Keith and Marcie Vree; his 16 grandchildren, Saskia and Paul Koepke, Quincy and Lisa Pearson, Adam and Theresa Vree, Steve and Stacey Vree, Ryan and Megan Vree, Nicholas Vree, Melissa and Jim Farris, Jared and Bryce Vree, Amber Aspinwall; his seven great-grandchildren, Reece, Leighton, Emersyn and Drake Koepke, Quincy Pearson Jr., Lily Vree and Adelle Farris; his sisters, Riek Sparnaay, Agnes Wansink; several nieces and nephews and many friends.
