BEULA E. LARKIN LAPEER Beula E. Larkin, age 90, of Lapeer went home to be with the Lord Monday, April 6, 2009 at Lapeer Regional Hospital in Lapeer. She was born September 16, 1918 in Erie, Pennsylvania daughter to the late Warren and Sarah Zepernick Moyer. She married Rev. John E. Larkin on December 23, 1941 in Fremont, Ohio. He has preceded her in death on January 6, 2006. Beula has been living in Lapeer the past 6 years and previously in Vermilion, Ohio. Prior to living in Vermilion, Beula lived in Marlette, where her husband John Pastored the Bethel Church for 18 years. Beula was very active in the work at Bethel church serving as Choir Director, Head of Nursery, Organist and the various women s group organizations of the church. She also worked as a sales clerk at the former Ray's Mens Wear in Marlette. Beula also worked with her husband John as an Independent Shaklee Business Owner for several years in Marlette before retiring to live in Vermilion, OH. She enjoyed music, playing the organ, fishing and going to the cabin in Grayling. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family as a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by three sons; John (Carol) Larkin of Jackson, Rick Larkin of Lapeer and Rod (Danette) Larkin of Lapeer, eleven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Warren and Sarah Moyer, husband John Larkin and sister Ruby Wells. Funeral services were held at Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette, with son Pastor John Larkin officiating. Burial has taken place at the Marlette Cemetery. BILL (WILLIS) MERRIMAN DECKERVILLE Bill (Willis) Merriman, age 83, passed away on Tuesday April 7, 2009 in the Deckerville Community Hospital after a short illness. He was born February 3, 1926 in Deckerville the son of the late Oscar and Amy (Fair) Merriman. Bill married Miss. Ileene Quandt on April 27, 1946. She preceded in death on January 30, 2009. Mr. Merriman worked for the United States Soil Conservation Service for 40+ years as a Soil Service Technician. He had a great love for the farmland and watersheds of Sanilac County. He enjoyed very much to help farmers to correctly tile drain their fields, dig or clean out a drain, or install a farm pond, or generally help farmer be good stewards of the soil and watersheds of the county. Bill had a great many friends in Sanilac County through his work in the Sandusky office. Besides working full time for the Soil Conservation Service, Bill and his wife Ileene had a small dairy operation outside of Deckerville. They worked together to keep this operation ongoing. Mr. Merriman was very devoted to his wife, family, and agriculture. He worked to raise a son and daughter, and granddaughter plus all the other jobs and hardships he had during his lifetime. He enjoyed going for rides in the countryside or watching his grandsons play football and his granddaughter play basketball. Bill will always be remembered by his family, friends, and caretakers for his big pleasing smile. He is survived by one son; Randy (Dora) Merriman of Deckerville and one daughter; Roxanne La Londe of Casper Wyoming, four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one sister; Mrs. Ida Wagner of Mayville, one sister-in-law; Margaret Merriman of Deckerville, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter; Natalie Merriman, five brothers; Harleigh, Joel, Richard, David, and Frank and three sisters; Dorothy Austin, Anne Thorn and Ruth Cloutier. Beatrice A. Jones, age 71, of Sturgis, died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. Beatrice was born Aug. 14, 1937, a daughter of George Paul and Teresa (Young) Miller in Elgin, Ill. On April 12, 1958, Beatrice married Marvin R. Jones in LaGrange, Ind. He preceeded her in death in April 1993. Beatrice was previously employed at Miller’s Merry Manor in LaGrange in the housekeeping department. She later started her business as a maid service in Sturgis which she operated for many years. She formerly attended the Sturgis Baptist and Sturgis Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are a son, Marvin R. Jones Jr. and his fiance, Sharlene Rielly, of Sturgis; a daughter, Starr L. (Darren)Tharp of Ionia, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Marvel Ray of Texas; four sisters, Alicia Potter of Lexington, Ky., Georgian Smith of Middlebury,Ind., and Marlene Coney and Pamela Perrin, both of Illinois; seven grandchildren, Phillip M. Tharp, Sarah L. Tharp, Hannah L. Tharp, Jessica (Jones) Ernsberger, PFC Tyler S. Jones, U.S.M.C. Marvin R. Jones III, Morgan J. Jones; four great-grandchildren, Brian M. Ernsberger, Darren M. Tharp, Carter M. Ernsberger and Katherene S. Tharp; future grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Jessica A. Parrigin, Candace L. Salmons, Cody T. Salmons,   Haley D. Parrigin and Preston T. Betty A. Roy, age 79, of Colon, Mich., went home with the angels on April 8, 2009.  She was born on Sept. 16, 1929, in Marion, Ind., to Parke and Louise (Jackson) Fawkes. She graduated from Three Rivers High School and worked at Ross Labs for many years. On May 18, 1968, she married Emil B. Roy, and they made their home in Colon. Surviving are a daughter, Michele Fields, and a grandson, Kurt Fields; nieces Billie Washburn, Kris (Don) Stephens and Cindy Elliott; a nephew, Steven (Tonya) Shoemaker; and a host of great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Leatrice Shoemaker. Cremation has taken place.  A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the home of Steven Shoemaker, 58558 Ash Road, Three Rivers.  Please join with her family and friends at this time.  If desired, the family suggests that memorials be made to Heartland Healthcare of Three Rivers. A private service for the family has taken place. Clifford Melvin Whitney, 60, of Fairfield passed away, April 13, 2009, at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor.  He went to be with Jesus in his Eternal Home. He was born July 15, 1948, to Melvin C. Whitney and Katherine Whitney (Smith). He served in the Armed Forces, both Army and Navy.  He was preceded in death by his father, Melvin Whitney, and step father Kenneth G. Smith. He is survived by his mother, Katherine Smith; sister, Carol (Randy) McCoy of Rousseau, Ky.; stepsister, Deanna (Donald) LeDroit of Adrian; two stepbrothers, Robert (Roberta) Smith of Clayton and Larry Smith of Ocean Springs, Miss., and several nieces and nephews.  He enjoyed fishing and going to the Hoagie Man Restaurant and seeing his many friends. At Clifford’s request, cremation has taken place. Memorial Services will  be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2009, at Jasper Bible Church with the Rev. Bruce Jewett officiating. DALE CARTER FLORIDA Dale Carter, age 75, was born on January 23, 1934 in Cheboygan, the son of William and Ethel (DeLoy) Carter and the eleventh of their 13 children. He passed away April 9, 2009 in the Tavares, Florida hospice house. As a youth Dale was very involved with the Cheboygan Boy's Club. At 14 years old he was selected as regional winner of the Boy's Club Junior Citizenship Award for the states of Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. As a teen he was mayor of local Boys Club, camp counselor and helped build and raise funds for the Pete Kendzorski Recreation Center in Cheboygan. After graduation from Cheboygan High School in 1953, Dale enlisted in the Army serving in Korea and Japan. He was in the Special Category Army Unit Reassigned with the Air Force unit or SCARWAF. He was in the Army but assigned to build airstrips for the Air Force. He married Elaine Morgan 50 years ago in Marlette. They had two daughters: Vicky (Dave) Plummer of Gaylord and Karen Mallory ofLansing and three grandchildren - Heather and Jamie Plummer and Andrew Mallory. Dale worked for 33 years as Route #3 mail carrier in Marlette retiring in 1997. When he started the route, there were still some corduroy roads (logs used as base for the roads). He received the post office's safety award for all 33 years. His hobby was carpentry. He built their home in Marlette and after retiring constructed their home in Cheboygan. He also built a camper, travel trailer, furniture, etc. He enjoyed traveling visiting all but five of the states. His brother Vern (Pat) Carter and sister Alice (Bill) Nichols of Cheboygan survive Dale. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Norman, Wallace, and Benjamin and sisters Irene, Ruth, Ada, Wanda, June, Jacqueline and Gloria. Dale never smoked or worked around chemicals, but developed pulmonary fibroses and lung cancer. His request was to have body donated to science to help others. A private burial will be held in the summer.

Darl S. Sunday, 97 of Girard, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility in Coldwater. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Bruce Kintigh of the Girard United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Girard Township. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Darl was born Sept. 9, 1911 in Algansee Township to Marshall and Alpha (Rathburn) Sunday. He married Blanche Coleman. She preceded him in death in 1959. He later married Mae Fleming. She preceded him in death in 2001. Mr. Sunday began working as a farm mechanic for Hadley Farm Equipment and Wells Equipment. He later went to work as a janitor at the Branch Area Careers Center, retiring in 1975. Darl’s love of farming always kept him busy on his family farm while he held other jobs. After his retirement, he began his own repair shop for farm equipment. Darl was an avid woodworker and enjoyed making furniture. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and visiting with people. Mr. Sunday is survived by his sons; Kenneth Sunday of Coldwater, Dana Sunday of Concord, Jerry Doolittle of Angola, Ind., Wesley Doolittle of Bowling Green, Ohio, his daughters; Mona Barber of Coldwater, Jeanie Higbee of California Township, Phoebe Lewis of Coldwater, sister Arlene Rzepka and numerous grand, great, and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his wives, his sons Leon and Basil Sunday, sisters Belva Ray and Louisa Johnson and one grandchild. Memorials may be directed to Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. Also survived by sisters-in-law, Rebecca Underwood, Claudia (Robert) Zichichi, Sarah (Tom) Flynn; their stepfather, Albert Gibas, and niece Anne Zichichi. He was raised in Belleville, Mich., and moved to Onsted in 1978 and worked as an auto body technician in Ann Arbor. He was a member of the Sumpter Fire Dept., Irish Hills Rod and Gun Club, Ann Arbor and Brooklyn Moose Lodges and VFW. One of the highlights of his life was drawing two Michigan Elk permits. Throughout his life, he was involved with cars, taking the opportunity to exhibit at Cobo Hall’s Autorama. He was a member of the Belleville Trinity Episcopal Boy Scout Troop #231, earning the Eagle Scout Rank. He was a Chinook helicopter crew chief in the 101st Airborne and served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. He helped found the Irish Hills Rod and Gun Club in 1985, serving as vice president and board member and he was coordinator of the hunter safety program. David supported his community and was generous with his time and knowledge. He participated in fund-raising activities for the Sportsman club, Moose and Brooklyn Kiwanis “Support the Troops” efforts. He will be remembered for his "can-do" attitude, willingness to take risks, and helping others, as demonstrated by his participation in the Heartmate II Left Ventricle Assist System study, as a bridge to heart transplantation. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Michael; a sister-in-law, Barbara (nee Hall); grandparents, Harry and Marion (Creighton) Hartwick, and Tom and Muriel (Kettle) McKenzie, and his mother-in-law, Barbara Underwood-Gibas. His Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 11575 Belleville Road, Belleville, with Father John R. Hagan officiating. Dorothy M. Fair, age 87, of Battle Creek, formerly of Bronson, died Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Laurels of Bedford following an eight month illness. According to her wishes, cremation will take place.  A graveside memorial service will be scheduled at the Bronson Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are by the Kolcz Funeral Home of Bronson. Dorothy was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Sturgis, daughter of Fred M. and Jennie M (Willson) Maybee and lived most of her life in the Bronson area. She married Harry Hopkins on Jan. 26, 1940 in Bronson. He died June 24, 1964. She later married Paul Fair on April 29, 1977 in Bronson. Paul died Jan. 25, 1999. Dorothy was a retail grocery clerk for over 23 years, working at the former Quality Market, Davidson’s Super Valu, Gay’s Super Market and the Bronson Super Valu, retiring in 1983. She had also worked at the former Bronson Reel Company. She was a member of the Bronson American Legion Auxiliary, the AARP, and formerly affiliated with the Bronson United Methodist Church, where at one time she taught Sunday School. She was also a former Girl Scout Leader. She enjoyed bingo and playing cards with “the girls,” garage sales, latchhook, painting, sewing, crosswords and collecting frogs and elephants. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Louis Gabriel of Battle Creek, two grandchildren, SFC Lance (Brandie) Long of Fort Drum, N.Y., Cristi (Jeffrey) Lancaster of Buderim, QLD, Australia; four step-children, five grandchildren, a brother, two nieces and a nephew and her faithful feline companion “Sam” that she rescued from the animal shelter.

Clemens to the late Lawrence and Theresa (Kociba) Romzek. Duane was a member of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church of Harbor Beach. Edwin Alfred Kochendorfer, 90, of Allen, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009 at Drews Place Village Green, Hillsdale. He was born June 29, 1918, in Allen Township to Charles and Wilhelmina (Mogel) Kochendorfer and graduated from Allen High School as Salutatorian of the class of 1937. Edwin, a long-time area farmer, was a member of the Quincy Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and an avid softball player in his younger years. On Feb. 23, 1946, he married Loretta Rhodes in Concord Township and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Judy Kochendorfer of Allen and one son, Robert (Mary) Kochendorfer of Jonesville. He was preceded in death by six brothers, William, F.A., Leonard, Carl, Walter and Herman, and two sisters, Pauline and Wilhelmina. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Quincy, with Pastor Robert Eickmann officiating. Interment will follow in Allen Cemetery. He was born April 14, 1926, in Signal Mountain, Tenn., to Ernest Sr. and Rosa (Davis) Ridge. He married Mackie "Peggy" L. Tripp on September 18, 1943 in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. Mr. Ridge served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. His duty included tours in the South Pacific, Iwo Jima and the invasion of Normandy. Proud uncle of many nieces and nephews. He was a veteran of WWII, during which he monitored the financial activity of the Axis powers in North Africa and investigated the workings of I.G. Farben for the Treasury Department . Stan served as Corporate Secretary of Borman Foods (Farmer Jack) until his retirement in 1973 when he became involved in real estate and in SCORE. He was remarkably active throughout his later years, and was a devoted grandfather, father and husband. Frieda E. (Urbach) Kling 1916-2009 Frieda Elvira (Urbach) Kling, East Lansing, 92, passed away April 6, 2009. She was born in Saginaw on June 23, 1916 to Alexander and Katherine (Weitz) Urbach. Frieda graduated from Columbiaville High School and Lapeer Country Normal. She taught in the Willey Country School near Columbiaville when she was 18 years old. In 1938, she graduated from Central Michigan University with her BS degree and teaching certificate. Frieda taught mostly 6th grade in the Sebewaing Elementary School and retired in 1976 after 26 years of teaching. She had a life-long love of learning and enjoyed reading, traveling and corresponding with friends and family. Frieda was married to Jacob Kling of Sebewaing on June 13, 1942 and they enjoyed over 64 wonderful years together. She was a charter member of VFW Post 4115 Auxiliary in Sebewaing, member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the Okemos Community Church. She is survived by a daughter, Jacklyn Hughes, East Lansing; son, David (Marie) Kling, Lancaster, Pa.; two brothers, Arthur (Jayne) Urbach, Mesa, Ariz. and Victor (Patricia) Urbach, Danville, Calif.; one brother-in-law, Joseph Kling; two sisters-in-law, Marylou Urbach and Anne Kling; five beloved grandchildren, Josh, Katy, Patty, Bob and Michael; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was employed by the Ford Motor Company for 10 years and he later owned an auto salvage business. He was a former member of the West Rome Baptist Church in Manitou Beach. He retired to Brooksville, Fla., in 1996. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising rabbits and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He will be missed by his family, including his wife, Vietta; son, David Whitson of Clayton, Mich.; daughters, Cindy Renz of Brooksville, Fla., and Jennifer Breeding of Ft. Bragg, N.C.; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Vicky Curley of Adrian. She was born March 20, 1919, in Warsaw, Ind., a daughter of the late J.C. and Inez (Whitacre) Kyle and has been a resident of Sturgis since 1977, moving here from Warsaw. On Dec. 28, 1934, in Warsaw, she married Irvin Frey. This marriage ended in divorce. On Dec 11, 1955, she married Harvey S. Chupp in Elkhart, Ind.  He preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 1961. Helen had been employed for several restaurants including the Chicken Coop and Murphy Mart in Sturgis and also in Warsaw and Goshen, Ind.  She was also a homemaker and enjoyed playing Yahtzee. Surviving are one daughter, Virginia Antonides of Sturgis; five grandchildren, Brad Antonides of Warsaw, Bart (Sonia) Antonides of Roanoke, Ind., Brian (Teresa) Antonides of Syracuse, Ind., Cheryl (Larry) Criswell of Warsaw and Elaine (Randy) Heath of Portage; 10 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchild.   She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; infant daughter, Sherry Ann Frey; great-great-grandson, Jeremy Criswell; son-in-law, Donald (Tony) Antonides; two brothers and one sister.   The family will receive friends and relatives from 2- 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Kenneth J. Thaut 1937-2009 Kenneth J. Thaut, 71, Bad Axe, formerly of Sebewaing, died Saturday, April 11, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center in Bay City following a 7 year illness. He was born December 18, 1937 in Whitney Twp., Arenac Co., son of the late George and Maria (Stamm) Thaut. He was united in marriage to Patricia Langley on March 5, 1960. They had three children together, Jeffrey, Crystal and Bryan. He then married Ann L. Sageman on May 17, 2003 in Bad Axe. Ken had been employed at the former Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Sebewaing and later for Independent Bank in Sebewaing, serving as vice president and later was manager of the Caseville branch before retiring in April 30, 1998. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sebewaing, serving on several boards. He also was a former member of the Sebewaing Lions Club, Sebewaing Fire Department and a member of Scenic Golf Course. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed crossword puzzles. He served in the U.S.Army in Germany. He is survived by his wife, Ann; one daughter, Crystal (Jeff) Scott, Canton; one son, Bryan (Anna) Thaut, Leonard; seven grandchildren, Lauren, Jessica, Jonah, Lucas, Madison, Elijah and Isabella; one brother, Dan (Dolores) Thaut, Washington State; stepson, Chuck Young, Ferndale and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Jeffrey, on July 29, 1984. Cremation has taken place at Sunset Valley Crematory in Bay City. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Rev. Michael Boyer will officiate with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 a.m. Wednesday until the time of service. She was born March 21, 1926, in Saginaw, Michigan, daughter of the late Phillip and Viola (Noyes) Dixon. She married William Bolsby and he passed away. She then married Arnold Essenmacher on January 29, 1983 in Sandusky. He passed away August 23, 1996. Louise was a member of the Sandusky First United Methodist Church and a member of the Sandusky VFW Auxiliary # 2945. She was also a seamstress for many years. She is survived by five children; Sharon (Dennis) Minard, Rick (Robin) Bolsby, Stacy (Sherry) Essenmacher, all of Sandusky, Anthony (Bobbie) Essenmacher of Holt, Susan (Tom) Carney of Madison Heights, ten grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two sisters; Wanita Lane and Virginia Brackett, several nieces, nephews and several special friends. She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; Mary Elizabeth Essenmacher and Quin Thomas Carney. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time outdoors. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. They moved to Mendon in 1919, where Pauline graduated from Mendon High School with the Class of 1930.  Pauline was married to Lloyd Kuhlman in LaGrange, Ind., on March 12, 1931.  They operated a farm south of Mendon until Lloyd’s death on Oct. 28, 1978.  Pauline was a homemaker and longtime member of the Mendon United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir for several years, and was active in the Grace Circle.  She was an avid reader and enjoyed knitting.  She especially treasured spending time with her family and friends.   Pauline is survived by her daughter,  Katheryn Lytle (Charles) of Sturgis;  daughter-in-law, Patsy Kuhlman of Mendon;  seven grandchildren, Teresa Cytlak (Ron Neale) of Three Rivers, Myra (Mike) Kolbow of Northville, Phillip (Gail) Kuhlman of Mendon, Lucinda (Joe) Mowrey of Parker, Colo., David Lytle (Kim) of Sturgis, Diane Marks (Tim) of New Lenox, Ill., and Michelle Bechill (Chris) of Lowell;  nine great-grandchildren, Justin and Nick Kolbow, Kevin and Ashley Kuhlman, Cole and Parker Mowrey, Ryan, Mary, and Anna Lytle, Katie and Kristyna Marks, Hannah and Christian Bechill; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Violet Pierce and Barb Avery.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; her son, Maurice Kuhlman; and two brothers, Lyle and Richard Katz. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home in Mendon.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the Mendon United Methodist Church with Sandy Miller, lay pastor of the Nottawa United Methodist Church and Rev. James Bender, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sturgis officiating.  Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Colon. PAYNE WALTER A JR M D 

Former longtime Grosse Pointe Farms resident Walter A. Payne Jr., M.D., 91, died Sunday, April 5, 2009. Dr. Payne was born Aug. 13, 1917, in Corbin, Kentucky. to Walter A. Payne and Minnie Freeman Payne. He attended high school in Corbin, then received his bachelor's degree from Berea College. He attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia earning his medical degree in 1944. Dr. Payne continued at Jefferson in an internship position before entering the U.S. Army Medical Corps in 1945. He served nearly three years in the European Theatre. He was discharged as a captain in 1948 and worked as a physician in the student health department of Cornell University. Dr. Payne then went to the University of Alabama Medical School to work under Dr. Tinsley R. Harrison, later serving as his chief resident. While in Alabama, Dr. Payne met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Ann Berney in 1952. That same year he was invited to work in the internal medicine department of Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit. He retired in 1997 after 45 years of practice. Dr. Payne had many interests among them history, literature and the fine arts. He is survived by his son, Robert B. (Susan) Payne; daughter, Gena E. Callison and grandchildren, Max R. Canché and Sara A. Canché. He was predeceased by his wife, Betty and son, Walter A. Payne III. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 18 at Christ Church Grosse Pointe, 61 Grosse Pointe Blvd., Grosse Pointe Farms. Robert J. Collison 1926 - 2009 Robert J. Collison, 82, Bay Port, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at the Huron County Medical Care Facility near Bad Axe. He was born in rural Bay Port on December 15, 1926, the son of the late Arthur D. and Lydia J. (Quick) Collison. After attending the Snell Rural School, Robert attended and graduated from Bay Port High School. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War, 1950-1952, and was a member of the American Legion Steele Lambert Post #533, Bay Port. In his younger years, Robert worked at the Wallace & Morley store, and then the Cooperative Elevator Co. in Pigeon. He retired after more than 25 years at Sebewaing Industries, where he was an inspector. On June 26, 1976 he was united in marriage to Delphine H. Brown at the Community of Christ Church, Bay Port. He and Delphine enjoyed traveling to Wachula, Fla. for many winters where they enjoyed shopping at flea markets and attending auctions. He is survived by his wife, Delphine, Bay Port, a daughter, Libby Alexander, Bay Port; two sons, Tim (Joyce) Brown, Bay Port and James Brown, Caro; six grandchildren, Kayla and Kelsey Alexander, Jennifer Ulfig, Christin (Jim) Hempton, Rebecca (Eric) Heiden and Aaron Brown; two great-grandchildren, Trenten Ulfig and Lauryn Hempton; a sister, Doris Brown, Pigeon and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd, Roy, Stanley and Loren. Funeral services were held on Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon. Elder Terry Brown officiated, with burial taking place in the New Bay Port Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Community of Christ Church, Bay Port. Robert P. Romzek 1940-2008 Robert P. Romzek, 68, New Haven, passed away on November 30, 2008 at Briarwood Manor in Flint, after a long illness. He was born in Mt. Clemens on December 20, 1940 to the late Lawrence and Theresa (Kociba) Romzek. He served 21 years in the military with two in the Army and 19 in the Coast Guard as a meteorologist and an instructor at the USCG Institute. In service to his country, he visited the South Pole seven times and the North Pole 13 times, receiving many commendations from the Artic and Antartic regions of his study. He is survived by his sisters, Gloria (Robert) Elkins, Deland, Fla., Maureen (Gene) Fogel, Canton, Barbara Romzek (David Greenamyre), Lawrence, Kan. and Kathryn (Floyd) Shotwell, Shelby Township and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Marilyn Abraham and brother, Jerome Romzek. Mass was held on April 14, 2009 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. Military burial at sea will be honored by the Coast Guard when weather permits at a later date off Harbor Beach. Arrangements were handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach.

Ronald was a breeder and trainer of running quarter horses, a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and the Michigan Quarter Horse Association. Surviving besides his wife, Noreen, are a daughter, Donna (Jim) Howell of Jonesville; three sons, Dave (Corrina) Wood of Friendsville, Tenn., Jeffrey D. (Emily) Wood of Hillsdale and Robert (Barbara) Wood of Maryville, Tenn.; two sisters, Judy Hetzel of Garden City and Marcia (Terry) Rhodes of Canton; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Cathy and a brother Joseph. Funeral services for Ronald H. Sharon Kay (Schermerhorn) Neblo, age 58, passed away on April 9, 2009, at home, surrounded by love. She was called home to be with her Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. Sharon was the first daughter, second child, to the late Earl Michael “Mike” and Louise (Bradish) Schermer­horn, arriving on Dec. 3, 1950, in Adrian, Mich. She attended Galesburg-Augusta High until 1966, to go on to graduate from Madison High School in 1969. Sharon became a Texan in July 1999, residing in Sherman, Texas, where she later graduated from the International Business School in 2005. Sharon was an active member of Hagerman Baptist Church in Pottsboro, Texas, where she came to know and love not only The Lord Jesus Christ, but also many great friends she called family. Sharon was always our rock, staying strong even throughout her battle, a fighter until the end. A loving mother, daughter, sister and friend who lived her life to the fullest and always making sure everyone around her did the same. She enjoyed fishing and taking road trips just to see what she could find. As her time grew near she had no fear of her journey that lay ahead because she knew that there was a better place waiting for her. THOMAS BITMAS DECKERVILLE Thomas Bitmas, age 63 of Deckerville, passed away on March 12, 2009. Son of the late Frank and Helen Bitmas. Brother of Ronald Bitmas, Mary Billings and the late Irene Jast and the late Dorothy Foss. Thomas lived at the Deckerville Pine House for 27 years. He had many friends. He loved to socialize and listen to polka music. A favorite past-time was riding to the dealers lots in Sandusky and looking for red sports cars. Every May, he would put on a tuxedo and ride in a limo with his Pine House friends to the May Ball to dance with many beautiful women who were his friends. He enjoyed his work at Sanilac County Community Mental Health. Tom's Community of Christ church family was a very important part of his life. Thomas also had a strong love for giraffes and was an avid collector of them. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him. The funeral was held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors-Capstick Chapel, Lapeer. A memorial get together will take place at Pine House on Sunday, April 19, 2009 from 2-4 pm.

Terry Franklin Hoag, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of Hillsdale County. He was born Aug. 30, 1953 in Coldwater, the son of Leo and Bernice (James) Hoag. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann (Klinck) Hoag, whom he married on Dec. 30, 1989. He is also survived by two brothers, George and Leo Hoag of Coldwater; three sisters, Judy Brenneman and Mary Kay Norton, both of Coldwater, and Nina Jean Lupnitz of Lansing; two brothers-in-law, Dave Klinck of Allen, and Charlie Klinck of Hillsdale and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Barbara McQueen. Terry served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and he was a past member of the American Legion Post in Paw Paw, Quincy and Hillsdale. He graduated from Spring Arbor College in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and he retired from Consumers Energy in 2003, where he worked as an Electrical Sub-Station Operator. He also served on the Board at Hospice of Hillsdale County. At his request, cremation has taken place and a memorial service to honor the life of Mr. Terry Franklin Hoag will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale on Saturday, April 18 beginning at 11 a.m. with Ruth Hoffman officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Hospice of Hillsdale County.

VIRGIN THOMAS BERNARD 

Age 79 of Delray Beach, Florida died April 13, 2009. After a two year battle with cancer, Tom went peacefully in his sleep. Our beloved Tom was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. After a stint in the US Army, he worked in his family owned business-Metropolitan Meat Supply Company from 1953 until relocating to Boca Raton, Florida in 1972. From 1972 to 1993, Tom owned and operated Thomas B. Virgin Landscape Maintenance and Pest Control. He was an industry leader in the business and widely known as the leading specialist in Lethal Yellowing Palm Tree Disease Treatment. Tom was predeceased by his father John, mother Helen and older brother Jack. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Loveday Virgin, his son Thomas B. Virgin of Miami, two daughters, Patti Lynn (Craig) Foley of Ocala, and Jennifer Ann (Scott) Rhine of Boynton Beach; ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Tom will be missed by his many friends and family. A memorial gathering will be held on Friday April 17, 2009 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon with a Memorial Service at Lorne & Sons Funeral Home, 745 N. E. VIRGINIA P. SAMPSON SANDUSKY Virginia P. Sampson, age 90, of Sandusky passed away peacefully, Monday, March 30, 2009 at Sanilac Medical Care Facility. She has lived in Sandusky since 1978 and was previously from Watrousville area. Virginia was born March 16, 1919 in Saginaw, daughter to the late Russell and Ella Mae (Fullerton) Farnum. She graduated from Caro High School in 1938. She attended the Watrousville United Methodist Church. She married Orville Sampson March 14, 1964 in Watrousville. He preceded her in death October 27, 1978. She is survived by one brother; Bruce Farnum of Vassar, two sisters; Gloria Johnston of Athens, Tennessee and Loraine Hess of Caro. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Billy, John, Duane, Russell and Robert Farnum and sister Beatrice Grabowski. She was born June 12, 1920, in Lapeer, to (the late) Chester and Lillian Johnson. Viola had retired from McCrory's in 1969, after completing 17 years of service as a sales supervisor. Virgie May Avery, age 95, of Three Rivers, died Monday, April 13, 2009, at Three Rivers Health. She was born Aug. 3, 1913, in Elkhart, Ind., a daughter of George and Addie (Earnhart) Kindig.   On July 3, 1934, she married Everett L. Avery in Elkhart. He preceded her in death Nov. 9, 1996. Virgie was a member of the Mendon Grange and enjoyed traveling and camping. Surviving are her daughters, Alice (Michael) Salisbury and Evelyn Smith both of Constantine; sons, Donald (Ailleen) Avery of Sturgis, Herbert (Ann) Avery of  Edwardsburg, Ray (Diana) Avery of  Three Rivers; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; sister,   Betty Guipe of  Niles, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Everett Avery; a foster son, John Tacia Avery; grandsons Bruce Smith and Matthew Avery; sisters, Marguerite Everett, Mary  Londick, Jenny Kindig, Nellie Youngblood, Marian  Stump, Berdine  McKee,  Lois Eddy; brothers, Durward Kindig, Glen Kindig;  and son-in-law, J.W. Smith. Wesley H. Saxman age 91 of Leonidas passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at his home, after a short illness. Wesley was born April 8, 1918, in Leonidas Township, a son to the late W. Ivan and Mabel E. (Troy) Saxman. On April 9, 1938, he married Gertrude C. Cooley. She preceded him in death on Aug. 7, 1987. Later in 1995, he married Dorothy Easterday. Wesley was a lifelong resident of Leonidas. He graduated from Colon High School with the class of 1936 and furthered his education with two years of college. Wesley served in the U.S. Army during World War II, assigned to the Counter Intelligence Corps. He worked for Weston Biscuit Company, Olivers of Battle Creek, (building B-47s and B-52s), AK Zinns Feed Co., all of Battle Creek, Then he worked for Kirsch Company of Sturgis from 1954 to 1981. Wesley had still lived in the same house he built in 1948 in Leonidas, where he operated a small farm. He also built a home at Watersmeet in the U.P. He had served on the Colon school board for 12 years and was instrumental in bringing a girls’ sports program to Colon High School. He was a member of the Colon Masonic Lodge #73 and Colon American Legion Post #454. He had also attended Factoryville Bible Church. He is survived by three daughters, Judith (Carl) Quirin of Sturgis, Kathryn (Leon) Barrett of Colon and Mary Ellen (Sam) Otterpohl of Land O’ Lakes , Wis.; two sons, Raymond W. (Marilyn) Saxman of Colon and James L. (Linda) Saxman of Leonidas; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; stepchildren Bea Walls of Pallmetto, Fla., Steven (Alice) Easterday of Sturgis, Kenneth (Denise) Easterday of Angola, Ind., Joe (Lea) Schuler of Rice Lake, Wis.; several stepgrandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alan (Betty) Saxman of Battle Creek and Robert (Mary) Saxman of Bellevue; a sister, Julia Fitzgerald of Niles; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Schipper Funeral Home  in Colon, with a Masonic Service at 8 p.m., and also Saturday at the Factoryville Bible Church from 9:30-11 a.m., at which time funeral services will take place with the Rev. Fred Goebert officiating. Burial will follow at LeonidasCemetery, with Military Honors conferred by the Colon American Legion, assisted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. William J. Kriewall 1928-2009 William John Kriewall, 80, Harbor Beach, passed away Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe. He was born on December 25, 1928 in Grosse Pointe to the late Paul and Amelia (Gerstenschlager) Kriewall. Bill and Kathryn Ganley were united in marriage on January 12, 1957 in Harbor Beach. Bill was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Harbor Beach. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict and sailed on the Great Lakes for four years after returning from the service. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post 197 of Harbor Beach, a member of the Harbor Beach Conservation Club and the Harbor Beach Gun Club. Bill retired from Detroit Edison Company after working there for many years. He was a retired employee of the Detroit Edison Co. retiring from the Harbor Beach Plant after 25 years of service. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, Harbor Beach; children, John (Ruth) Kriewall, Harbor Beach and Jan (Jim)Adler, Ruth; five grandchildren, Andrea Kriewall, Harbor Beach, Aaron Kriewall, Harbor Beach, Jeff Adler, Bad Axe, Brad Adler, Rochester Hills and Renee Adler, Saginaw and three great-grandchildren, Paxton, Kacey and Caeden. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul and Lawrence Kriewall, Gertrude Krueger, Dorothea Rodda, Ilene Moore and Evelyn Will. Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 4, 2009 in the Zion Lutheran Church, Harbor Beach. Rev. Dave McCluskey officiated, with burial taking place in Rock Falls Cemetery. of Dearborn died April 10, 2009 after a rich life of 90 years. Born December 23, 1918 in Mound City, Illinois, she was a lifelong resident of Detroit, Michigan. Loving daughter of Gertrude and Walter Roberts, Phyllis was the devoted wife of the late Larry R. Young for forty-one years. Phyllis was an active professional woman working as a Job Placement Officer for MESC for 32 years. She was a member of the Elliottorian Business and Professional Women's Club. Her unwavering interest in the professional progress of young people was expressed by her work on numerous scholarship committees and benefit events. Her efforts were equally energetic on behalf of the historic Second Baptist Church in Greektown. A volunteer for many decades at hospitals in the Detroit area, Phyllis was also known for her good spirits and unflagging hard work. Phyllis' bright smile and loving nature will be remembered by her cousin Maceo Mitchell, her goddaughter Pamela Hayes, two fortunate in-laws Viola and Patricia Mitchell and numerous friends and co-workers. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009 at Second Baptist Church, 441 Monroe, Detroit, MI 48226.
