Aiden was born on Dec. 26, 2008, at Herrick Hospital in Tecumseh, Mich. Brad K. Ballard, age 60‚ Nottawa, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at his home following a short illness. He was born in Sturgis on Feb. 16, 1949, a son of Murray and Wava M. (Parsons) Ballard. Brad attended Centreville High School. From 1968 until 1970 he served in the U.S. Army and later in the National Guard. Brad worked as a corrections officer at the St. Joseph County Sheriff Department in Centreville, and previously in the St. Joseph County Juvenile Division. Brad had also been a welder at Meijer Hydraulics and a truck driver for Shafer Distributing in Coldwater. Brad was a power parachute pilot and he enjoyed golfing at St. Joseph Valley Golf Club and fishing. Surviving Brad are his daughters, Kari Ballard of Three Rivers and Skylar Ballard of Centreville; sons, Kaleb Ballard of Centreville and Jacob Ballard of Centreville; sister, Anne (Doug) Matthes of Sturgis; brother, Scott Ballard of Centreville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Virginia spent many years enjoying boating, playing cards, bowling, and spending time with family and friends. She was proud to have served as the first lady commodore of Conger Bay Boat Club and as past treasurer of Mariners Boat Club. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and grandmother, as well as a dear friend to many. Virginia is survived by her children, Hank Schanstra, Patricia Calihan, and Bill (Terri) Calihan; grandchildren, Bill (Stephanie), Shannon, Dan, McKenzie, and Caitlin; great-grandchildren, Billy and Addison; many nieces and nephews; and a family of friends. Carl Martin Hakes II, 78, of Onondaga, passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. Carl was born March 1, 1931, in Albion, Mich., and was the first-born child of Carl and Eva (Raser) Hakes. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Judith (Hodge) Hakes, whom he married Nov. 21, 1964. Also surviving are one son, Carl Martin Hakes III of Leslie; one daughter, Joy (Hakes) Collier of Parma and six grandchildren. Carl is also survived by one brother, Danny Hakes of Manchester, Mich. and four sisters, Dr. Judith Hakes of San Angelo, Texas, Edith (Hakes) Chapman of Mosherville, Trinka (Hakes) Noble of Bernardsville, New  Jersey and Eva (Hakes) Martin of Concord and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Howard Miles Hakes of Kalamazoo. Carl was a 1951 graduate of Jonesville High School, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University. While a student at  Jonesville High School, he was especially fond of his band director, Mr. Richard Kloko and his English teacher, Mrs. Carpenter. Carl was the drum major who could really strut and many times he would twirl his batons while they were lit with fire. He also was a member of the 4 Stars, playing his bass fiddle. Carl was an avid gardener, at one time growing over 10,000 gladiolus. Carl served his country in the United States Navy where he was a jet pilot and also a lieutenant. Carl was a member of Pope United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school for many years. Carl loved his family with all his heart and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services for Carl were held April 18 at the Watson Funeral Home in Parma. Interment was at the Pope Church Cemetery. Edna M. Kleinknecht 1917-2009 Edna M. Kleinknecht, 92, Harbor Beach, went home to the Lord on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Harbor Beach Community Hospital under hospice care. She was born March 12, 1917 in Harbor Beach to the late Earl and Elva (Asher) Melick. Edna married Ernest Howard on August 12, 1932. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1976. She married Lloyd Kleinknecht on September 15, 1978. He preceded her in death on August 13, 1994. Edna worked for many years at the Harbor Beach Community Hospital in the dietary area. She loved spending time with her family. Edna is survived by her children, Judy Learman, Harbor Beach, Carole Krease, Walled Lake, Gene (Josette) Howard, Hampton, Va., and Dean Howard, New Baltimore; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Edna was preceded in death by her siblings. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 18, 2009 in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Harbor Beach, with Rev. Paula Timm officiating. Burial was in Rock Falls Cemetery. The family of Edna Kleinknecht would like to thank the wonderful care that she had at Harbor Beach Community Hospital and by United Hospice. Edna Marcile Hardy, 91, of Jerome, passed away Jan. 28, 2009, at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands Hospital in Shenandoah, Texas. She was born Aug. 14, 1917, in Brooklyn, Mich., to Percy and Nina (Stewart) Tilden. She married Ralph Douglas Hardy on May 4, 1940, in Manchester, Mich., and he preceded her in death Nov. 19, 1994. She lived most of her life in Tipton, Manitou Beach and Jerome area.  She graduated from Napoleon High School  in 1937.  Edna attended Cosmetology School in Ann Arbor for one year.  She was co-owner of Hardy-Reed Tool & Die in Manitou Beach for 11 years, retiring in 1971.  She wintered in Conroe, Texas.  She enjoyed playing cards at the Addison Senior Citizens Center, enjoyed jig-saw puzzles and visiting with her friends. Surviving are three daughters, Ellen Miller of Pittsford, Pat (Roger) June of Mason, Ohio and Mary (Steve) Bowman of Conroe, Texas; one son, Thomas Hardy of Manitou Beach; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Josephine Wineland of Quincy. She was preceded in death by her parents,her husband and one sister, Margarite Virginia Prielipp. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 25 at the Addison United Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lykins officiating. Local arrangements are entrusted to the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Addison. Elsie Grace Weaver, 90, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away April 19, 2009, at the Loudon Health Center in Loudon, Tenn. She was born Aug. 2, 1918, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late William C. and Emma A. (Whittenburg) Studeman. Mrs. Weaver was a lifelong resident of Sturgis with the exception of the past three years when she was living in Tennessee to be closer to her daughters. On Sept. 5, 1937, she married Howard M. Weaver at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. He died Nov. 3, 2002. Mrs. Weaver worked with her husband at Weaver & Lingg International Harvester dealership in Sturgis and she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She was a very active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church where she had served on nearly all the ladies circles and committees. For many years she was a 4-H leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting. Her exceptional baking and cooking skills will be forever missed by her family. Mrs. Weaver is survived by her twin daughters, Sue (Keith) Emerson and Sally (Ronald) Magnus, both of Loudon, Tenn.;one son, John (Patricia) Weaver of Kirtland, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Doug, Dan, Scott, Sarah, Teresa, Tod, Tracy and Taryn; 17 great-grandchildren; one sister, Inez Ultz of Burr Oak and many nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; and one brother, William A. Studeman preceded her in death. Eva May Poffenberger, age 91,  of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday morning, April 22, 2009 at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Sturgis,  a daughter of the late Archie and Letha (Strohpaul) Keagle. Mrs. Poffenberger lived nearly her whole life in Sturgis, with the exception of the five years she resided in Three Rivers. On Jan. 5, 1940, she married Joseph Poffenberger in Three Rivers. He died March 23, 1993. She was a homemaker, a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sturgis and a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1937. Mrs. Poffenberger enjoyed crossword puzzles, writing poetry, reading and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Terry (Susan) Poffenberger of Sturgis; two grandchildren, Kevin Poffenberger of Kalamazoo and Nicole (TJ) Wickstrom of Cedar Springs; three great grandsons, Collin Poffenberger, Joshua Wickstrom and Evan Wickstrom; one sister, Joyce (David) Thomas of Florida; two nieces, Julie (Larry) Patterson of Sturgis and Jean Strong of North Carolina; and one nephew, John (Carol) Keagle of Arizona. Francis Frederick “Fritz” Lehman, of North Adams, passed away Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at the “Mac” McGuire Skilled Nursing Facility in Hillsdale. He was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Detroit, the son of Robert and Alma (Hacht) Lehman. Fritz moved to Hillsdale in 1927 and graduated from Hillsdale High School in 1938. He served his country in the United States Army from July 1941 until May 1945. He married Martha Dwyer Nov. 2, 1946, and he worked at Gampco in North Adams for over 40 years retiring in 1984. He attended St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale and was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working in his yard. Fritz was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margie; two brothers, Robert and Eugene (twin); one son, Timothy and one daughter, Melissa. He is survived by his wife, of 62 years, Martha (Dwyer) Lehman; grandchildren, Kelly Lehman, Travis (Tami) Lehman, Jason (Heather) Brink, Heidi (Joe) Riley; great-grandchildren, Cody, Brock, Carter, Caleb, Marissa, Jace and Madison; daughter-in-law Helena Lehman and son-in-law James Brink. The family will receive friends for visitation from 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale with a Vigil Service to begin at 7 p.m. At his request cremation will follow the visitation and a memorial mass to honor the life of Mr. Francis Frederick “Fritz” Lehman will be held at at noon on Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church with Fr. George L. Kintner, age 85, of Adrian died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Lenawee Medical Care Facility. He was born July 22, 1923, in Bryan, Ohio, to Charles A. and Lulu G. (McKimmy) Kintner. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946. On Aug. 10, 1944, he married Virginia Neal in Adrian and she survives. George had been employed by Consumers Power for 22 years and then by Adrian Oil Burner for 19 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the First Church of the Brethren and the American Legion. In addition to his wife, Virginia, he is survived by three sons, Charles Kintner and his wife, Nancy, of Tecumseh, John Kintner and his wife, Sue, of Adrian and George Kintner and his wife, Brenda, of Waldron; two daughters, Charlotte Pickney and her husband, Millard, of Sterling Heights and Sharon Church of Williamston, Mich.; a brother, Russell Kintner and his wife, Margie, of Adrian; a sister, Viola Russell and her husband, Albert, of Jacksonville, Fla.; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Gary Church; two brothers and a sister. H. Aileen Hinds H. Aileen Hinds, Birmingham, formerly Detroit, died March 10, 2009. Aileen graduated from Mackenzie High in Detroit and the University of Michigan in Dearborn. She was a social work supervisor for the State of Michigan until she retired in December 1996. She loved reading, doing historical research, going to garage sales and flea markets, attending car shows and the Woodward Dream Cruise. She was an active member of the Mid-States Ceramic Study Group, the Michigan Sports Car Club and the Caseville Historical Society. She is survived by her cat, Natalie and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Hinds and her beloved pets, Alex, Sylvia, Red Dot, Smudge and Tootsie. Harold W. “Hal” Birkhold  Jr., 63, of Kansas City, Mo.,  passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. He was born in Three Rivers on Sept. 30, 1945, the son of Harold W. and Ellen (Campbell) Birkhold Sr. Hal graduated from Centreville High School in 1963 and received his bachelors degree from Ferris State University in 1967. He married Janice Frohriep on June 26, 1965, they were later divorced. Hal worked as a tool and die maker for GM and Delphi having worked at Fisher Body in Kalamazoo, Wichita Falls, and Kansas City. He retired in 2008 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Missouri and enjoyed country and blue grass music. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Paul Drust; grandchildren Dan Drust and Susie Drust, all of Sturgis. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother Rosalie (Anspaugh) Wells Birkhold; and sister Peggy Lee Johnson. Irene Agnes Holdwick 1922-2009 Irene Agnes (Volmering) Holdwick, 86, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital. She was born on June 29, 1922 in Ruth to the late William and Theresa (Guitar) Volmering. She lived with her parents until the early 1940's when she worked in Bad Axe and Port Huron before she was married. She married Robert C. Holdwick on October 8, 1947 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Ruth with Rev. Frank Kaufman officiating. He preceded her in death on November 13, 2000. Irene was a graduate of Sts. Peter & Paul Elementary School. She was honored to be Mama Ruth at the annual Mama Ruth picnic at Sts. Peter & Paul. Irene farmed with her family for most of the life. She retired from farming in 1988. Irene was a dedicated wife and mother, raising a family of five daughters and three sons. James A. Carman, 88, Coldwater died Friday, April 17, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Coldwater First Presbyterian Church with  Dr. James Troust officiating.  Interment of ashes will be at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium. James was born Nov. 19, 1920 in Buffalo, N.Y. to Nelson and Caroline (Jopp) Carman. He married Margaret Stimpson on Dec. 7, 1944 in Long Beach, Calif. Mr. Carman graduated from Highland Park High School in 1938 and Michigan State in 1943 with a B.S degree in Chemistry. He then went to Midshipmans School in Chicago, was commissioned Ensign in the Navy, where he spent the next two years in the South Pacific and discharged in 1945 as Lt. jg. After serving in the military, James went to work for Ford Motor Co., as a senior buyer until 1956. He then went to work at Hoover Universal in Ann Arbor as Vice President and General Manager of the Bearing Division, retiring in 1970. James has been in the Branch County area for the past ten years. He was active in many Presbyterian Churches, serving as an elder. Jim was a councilman and former mayor of Mackinaw City, served on the Lower Michigan Library Board and also was chosen as Man of the Year in 1987 by the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce. . He and his wife, Margaret were avid golfers and traveled extensively in the United States, putting over 100,000 miles on their motor home. Mr. Carman was preceded in death by his son James Carman, Jr. and his daughter Leslie Sue Carman. He is survived by his wife Margaret, his sons Christopher (Evelyn) Carman of Martin and David (Deborah) Carman of Coldwater, grandchildren Christopher, Jonathon, Zachary, Peter, Shane and Olivia Carman and great-grandchildren, Riley Christopher and Addison Hope Carman. Joyce B. Johnson, 95, of Coldwater died Monday, April 20, 2009 at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. Joyce was born June 15, 1913 in Belvidere, Nebraska to John Thomas and Sara Jane Louise (Bowen) Brinegar. She married Clarence Johnson on Feb. 14, 1936 in Nebraska. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2008. Joyce earned her Associates Degree from Hebron College in Nebraska, teaching school for two years prior to her marriage to Clarence. She enjoyed being a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Coming to the Branch County area in 1965, she was an active member of the Reformation Lutheran Church, where she belonged to the Church Ladies Organization. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed knitting, in which she was very gifted. She volunteered her time with many elections and was an avid card player, belonging to many card clubs. Joyce is survived by her sons Jerald (Charlotte) Johnson of Naperville, Ill., Joel (Cheryl) Johnson of Manitou Beach, Jay and (Cindy) Johnson of Coldwater, her daughter Janet (Stan) Geisz of Washington, Ill., her sister Marjorie Mathieson of Tulsa, OKla., seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Lawrence Eugene “Larry” Owens, of Jonesville, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2009, at the Toledo Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. He was born July 16, 1943, in Addison, the son of Virgil and Ruth (Myers) Owens. He is survived by his wife, Janice (Lennox) Owens, whom he married on Oct. 2, 1965. He is also survived by his parents, Virgil and Ruth Owens of Jonesville; three children, Larry Jr. (Denise) Owens of Jackson, Raquel (Tim) Owens of North Adams and Stephanie Owens of North Adams; four grandsons, Brock, Ridge, Bryce and Nathan; one step grandson, Jonathan; one brother, Gary (Mary Jo) Owens of Hillsdale; one sister, Marietta (Randy) Raber of Tampa, Fla. and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Steven Owens. Larry graduated from North Adams High School and retired from Hillsdale Tool in 2008 after over 37 years of service. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family at the campgrounds. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed football and NASCAR racing and was a former coach for baseball in the North Adams area. He was also a cancer survivor for the Relay for Life. The family will receive friends for visitation at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 22. At his request, cremation will follow the visitation and a private service for the family will be held at a later date. She was born on May 13, 1930 in Harbor Beach, daughter of the late Lowry and Gladys (McGregor) Learman. She married Theodore G. Smith on April 2, 1949 in Ohio. He preceded her in death on September 28, 1993. Mae was a member of the former Colfax United Methodist Church. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, cooking and gardening. Mae is survived by two sons, Geri (Marcia) Smith, Bad Axe and Wayne (Maureen) Smith, Saginaw; two daughters, Patricia (Robert) Wangen, DeWitt and Mary Lee (Welton) Dye, Milwaukee, Wis.; one brother, William (Barbara) Learman, Harbor Beach; one sister, Betty Lou Krueger, Harbor Beach; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Marcia Kay Booher, 55, of LaGrange, Ind., died April 24, 2009, at her Fish Lake Home.  She was born in Winchester, Ind., on Sept. 7, 1953, to Ben and Kay  (Sheilds) Johnson.  She graduated from Northeastern High School in Fountain City, Ind., in 1971. She then went on to attend the Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn. and then Indiana University-Purdue University in Fort Wayne to earn a degree in elementary education. She married Michael D. Booher on June 4, 1971, in Whitewater, Ind.  Mrs. Booher taught at Prairie Heights Community Schools as a fifth- and first-grade teacher for 19 years.  She helped develop the Panther Paradise which is an interactive learning garden for the children.  She was a member of the South Milford Church of Christ in South Milford where she was very active. Mrs. Booher played the organ, sang in the choir, was active in the ladies Joy Circle and helped with junior church. She loved working outside in the garden with her flowers and enjoyed spending time on the water with her family.  Surviving are her mother, Kay Johnson of Richmond, Ind.; husband, Michael D. Booher of LaGrange; one daugher, Michelle and Len Walter of South Milford;one son, Martin and Tiffany Booher of South Milford; four grandchildren, Logan Walter, Tanner Walter, Lillie Booher and Febie Marcia-Rose Booher; two brothers, Steve and Kathy Johnson of Richmond, Ind. and Mark and Cindy Johnson of Carthage, Ind.; one sister, Linda and Dennis Hopkins of Knoxville, Tenn.; one half brother, Chris Johnson of Lynn, Ind.; several neices and nephews; and mother-in-law, Barbara Booher of Kendallville.  She was preceded in death by her father, Ben Johnson; and her father-in-law, Russell Booher.  Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday at South Milford Church of Christ north of South Milford. Marian L. Einhardt 1924 - 2009 Marian L. Einhardt, 85, Pigeon, passed away Monday, April 13, 2009 at her home. She was born in Kilmanagh on March 3, 1924, the daughter of the late Otto and Elsie (Armbruster) Volz. On April 23, 1944 she was united in marriage to Adolph Einhardt at St. John's Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Marian worked for the St. John's Lutheran Church and School in Pigeon for ten years and enjoyed working on the family farm until retirement. She loved playing softball in her younger years, as a pitcher. She enjoyed quilting and made many quilts. She loved and enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren. She was a member of the Ladies Aid at St. John's Lutheran Church and Scenic Golf and Country Club. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Pigeon. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Adolph Einhardt, Pigeon; daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Mohr, Essexville; son, Dale (Barbara) Einhardt, Rochester; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Margaret Nieschulz and two brothers, Donald and Walter Volz. Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 16, 2009 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pigeon. Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor, officiated. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Mary M. Hess passed away peacefully in California on April 1, 2009. She was a child of God. Mrs. Hess was born in Adrian, Mich., on July 10, 1916. She is survived by daughter Marianne Rinella in California; son Bob in New Jersey; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; brother Bob Morse in Michigan; brother-in-law Carl Nelson in Adrian, and five nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roman, and sisters Virginia Andreychuk and Dorothy Nelson. Mary graduated from Siena Heights College and was employed by the University of Michigan before being named City Treasurer of Adrian. After her retirement as treasurer of Lenawee Country Club, Mary moved to Midland, Mich., before settling in California where she enjoyed spending time with her family and singing in her church choir. Memorial services will be held in California and in Adrian, where she will be interred in Oakwood Cemetery on June 5. |

St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Michael C. Nowicki, age 62, of Quincy, Mich., formerly of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2009, at home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Aug. 23, 1946, in Toledo, Ohio, to Clement and Irene (Czlapinski) Nowicki. Mike was a graduate of St. Anthony Grade School and Macomber High School. In 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as a Sergeant in the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Rifle Marksmanship Badge. He was a member of the VFW Lucas County Post 2898. Mike worked for Champion Spark Plug from 1969-1989. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was tremendously generous and loving. He was known for his distinctive laugh and ability to tell great stories. Mike volunteered as a Boy Scout Troop Leader. He enjoyed bowling, bow and rifle hunting, and sports of all kinds, and was an avid fisherman as well. One of his greatest joys was spending time with family and friends at Marble Lake. He maintained friendships from childhood throughout the years. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his loving wife of 39 years, Jane (Jeziorowski) Nowicki, Mike is survived by his children, Tricia (Paul) Schlachter of Temperance, Mich., Chad (Sharon) Nowicki of Parma, Mich., and Sean (Erin) Nowicki of Quincy, Mich.; and grandchildren, Matee and Trent Nowicki, and Payten, Sydney and Skylar Schlachter. Owen E. Betz, 94 of Marshall died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at his residence under the care of his family. Owen was born Dec. 28, 1914 in DeKalb Co., Ind. to Clyde and Emma Faye (Teeters) Betz.  He married Laurene Thorp Oct. 31, 1934 in Angola, Ind. Owen was a self-employed dairy farmer and farmed all of his life. He served on the Board of the Michigan Milk Producers for many years as well as the Homer School Board. In 1969, he became an Ordained Minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and as such served as an Elder in various congregations in Marshall, Coldwater, Albion, Iron Wood and Bushnell, Fla. Survivors include his wife Laurene, daughters: Dorothy (Gaylord) Krumvede, Joan Stallworth, Rosalyn (Don) Holmes, Carrol (Dan) Rogers, Jean (Larry) Willis, Katherine (Paul) Edelman, and Beverly (Don) Hatch, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Richard P. Goniwiecha 1924-2009 Richard P. Goniwiecha, 85, Harbor Beach, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at his home under hospice care. He was born on January 21, 1924 in Detroit to the late John and Catherine (Pyrek) Goniwiecha. He and Jeanette Susalla were united in marriage on October 12, 1946 in Parisville. She preceded him in death on December 18, 2006. Richard was a retired Sigel Township farmer. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Parisville. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #5740 of Parisville where he belonged for nearly 63 years. Richard is survived by his children, Tom (Nancy) Goniwiecha, Harbor Beach, Ann (Albert) Depcinski, Cass City, Patti O'Neil, Harbor Beach and Michael Goniwiecha, Bad Axe; eight grandchildren, Dan, Randy (Katie) and Scott (Aimee) Goniwiecha, Andy, Steven and Heather Depcinski and Shawn and Megan O'Neil; two great-grandchildren, Nathan Goniwiecha and Mya Goniwiecha; one brother, Ray Goniwiecha, Ruth and one foster son, Bob Barrie. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Parisville with Fr. Peter Nwokoye officiating. Robert F. Klocke, age 82, of Adrian died Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at CareLink of Jackson. He was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Wauseon, Ohio, to Frank and Gladys (Cochran) Klocke. He was married to Delores Ball on April 21, 1945, in Adrian. He retired from Flojet Corp. in 1992. Robert served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, Donald Klocke of Adrian, and a sister, Linda Wilke of Spotsylvania, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Dale Klocke and Richard Klocke. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 12 noon, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father David Hudgins as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, where a Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7 p.m.  Visitation will also be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of service at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Roger L. Coopshaw, 74, of Blissfield passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Provincial House in Adrian, Mich. He was born on June 13, 1934, in Riga Township, Mich., the son of Louis and Magdalena (Termote) Coopshaw. Roger married Marilyn Snyder and she preceded him in death in 1988. Roger served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1956-1958. He worked for the Tecumseh Products Company in Tecumseh and was a member of the Blissfield American Legion Post #325. Roger was also a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, where he was active in the Knights of Columbus. He loved to play cards, ride snowmobiles and spend time with his family. Surviving are two children, Roger (Shelley) Coopshaw of Blissfield and Kenneth (Sonya) Coopshaw of Blissfield; five brothers, Robert (Anne) Coopshaw of Blissfield, Charles (Jeanette) Coopshaw of Harrison, Mich., Richard (Myra) Coopshaw of Harrison, Mich., Ron (Karen) Coopshaw of Blissfield and Jerry (Janice) Coopshaw of Adrian, Mich.; one sister, Alice (Leslie) Deri of Beckley, West Virginia, and six grandchildren, Zack, Tyler, Jake, Celia, Andrew and Lucas. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Marilyn Coopshaw. Funeral services for Roger will be held on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield with Fr. Francis Mossholder officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant View Cemetery in Blissfield with a military graveside service conducted by the Blissfield American Legion Post #325. Ronald D. Fish, 54, of Riverside California and formerly of Jonesville passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Riverside Community Hospital in Riverside, Calif. He was born in Hillsdale on Feb. 20, 1955, to John B. and E. Joan (Michaels) Fish, he survives in Jonesville. He was married to Paula Fish and she survives. Ronald resided in Jonesville until 1980 before moving to Riverside. Surviving besides his father John and his wife, Paula, are two daughters, Contessa (Lonnie) Jones of Fontana, Calif., and Jeanette Fish of Victorville, Calif.; a stepson, Brian Beulin of Utah; sisters Janine A. (Harley) Wilson of Waldron and Paula Fish of Hillsdale; a brother, John Michael (Mayme) Fish of Jonesville; and eight grandchildren. Ronald is preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Bradford. Stephen H. Chigas Stephen H. Chigas, 90, passed away Thursday (April 23, 2009) at Covenant Health Care Hospital in Saginaw. He was born September 6, 1918, in Peabody, Mass., son to the late Harry and Desbina (Pappas) Chigas. He married Sally J. Ross on October 25, 1952 in Almont. He was educated in Massachusetts and worked with his father on the family farm until WWII. He joined the U.S. Navy in January 1943, serving 4 years in the Atlantic and Pacific areas, being honorably discharged in November 1945. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked with his father for a couple of years. He then moved to the Detroit area, where he got a job working for an automotive experimental co., making small parts for future model cars. He attended a trade school to learn the prototype trade, helping the company progress, spending the last ten years in supervision. He retired after 30 years with the company. Stephen Zukowski Lapeer Stephen Zukowski, 85, of Lapeer (formerly of Dryden and Oak Park), passed away Friday (April 17, 2009). He was born September 8, 1923, in Iron River, to Anton and Josephine (Kulbacki) Zukowski. He married Joyce Harmer. Mr. Zukowski served his country in the United States Navy during WWII. He was a teacher in the Detroit School District, retiring after 31 years. Steve enjoyed spending time with his family, golf and gardening. Sysol/Malburg, age 81, a seven year resident of the Carson ville/Sandusky, previously a seventeen year resident of Imlay City, and formerly a longtime resident of Almont, passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the Sanilac County Medical Care Facility. Theresa was born October 15, 1927 in Dixon City, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Alfonse and Mary Ann (Barszcz) Kazmierski. Theresa graduated from Dickson City High School, Pennsylvania in 1945. She married Thaddeus Sysol in 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1970 and then married Leonard Malburg in 1978 and he preceded her in death also in 1984. Theresa retired from Ligon Bros. Manufacturing and had previously worked with Jean Gerlach at their G & S Sewing Center in Almont. She was a longtime member of St John Catholic Church in Allenton, enjoyed sewing for her family & friends, helped with the K Of C Bingo games in Imlay City and bowled as often as she could. Theresa is survived by her children; Veronica Tharp of Indianapolis, Indiana, Thaddeus and Charles Sysol of Almont, Monica (Gary) Schultz of Carsonville, Theresa Sysol of Newberry, Michigan and Sharon (Robert) Williams of Grand Rapids. Her grandchildren include; Elizabeth (Scott) Ryan, Thomas (Brandie) Schultz, Jessica (Robert) Gann, Michelle & Melissa Schultz, Melanie, Natalie and Noah Williams, great grandchildren include; Kiely Thomas, Robert Jr., Delaney Gann and Thomas, Tyler, Kaelyn Schultz. Siblings include; Pearl Fuchs (New Jersey), Stelle Cielski, Irene Snead of Boaz, Alabama, John Kazmierski of Pennsylvania and Mary Dalmas of Pennsylvania.
