Alvin Lee Wooster Sr., age 52, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Monday evening June 1, 2009, in Fawn River Township due to injuries sustained in an automobile bicyclist accident. He was born Sept. 23, 1956, in LaGrange, Ind., a son to Nelson and Mary Lou (Shank) Wooster. Al was a LaGrange, Ind., and Sturgis, Mich., area resident his whole life and attended Sturgis High School with the class of 1974. He was a welder by trade and worked with his father at NW Welding in Sturgis. Al loved fishing, woodworking, camping, and crafts and in the last year had truly enjoyed building bird houses. He is survived by two daughters, Angela (Cory) Patterson and Amanda Boughton, both of Sturgis; three sons, Jeremy (Amanda) Wooster and Joshua Wooster, both of Kalamazoo and Alvin Wooster Jr. of South Bend, Ind.; four grandchildren, Anthony, Grant, Sierra and Adam;  father, Nelson Wooster of Sturgis; three sisters, Jackie (Bill) Brown of Gaylord, Debra Bradley of Tallahassee, Fla., and Vicky (Michael) Howell of Goshen, Ind.; one brother, Scott Wooster of Carlsbad, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. His mothers, Mary Lou Wooster and Caroline Wooster; and one brother, Walter Wooster, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends and relatives from 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes – Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091 where the funeral service celebrating the life of Alvin Wooster, Sr. will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Barry Sommerfield of the Celebration Community Church of Sturgis will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Woodland Cemetery in Wolcottville, Ind. April Nicole Wheeler of Hillsdale passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at the St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. She was born Oct. 8, 1984 in Toledo, Ohio the daughter of Edward and Julie (Schmidt) Wheeler. She is survived by her mother, Julie Bradford and step-father, Roger Bradford both of Hillsdale; her father, Edward Wheeler, Sr. of Swanton, Ohio; one brother, Edward Wheeler, Jr. of Hillsdale; grandmother, Delores Wheeler of Swanton, Ohio; cousins, Autumn Hobie and Destiny Betzer, both of Hillsdale, Jessica Wheeler of North Adams and Robert Lock of Rossford, Ohio; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Robert Wheeler and Donald Schmidt and her grandmother, DeEtte Schmidt. April’s life was taken from her, but due to the fact that she was a believer in Christ we know that she is with her Lord and Savior at this time. “The Lord preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy.” A funeral service to honor the life of April Nicole Wheeler will begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday  at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale with the Rev. Lester Smith officiating. Cremation will follow the service. The family will receive friends for visitation from 11 a.m, until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Barbara H. Lloyd, age 85, of  Coldwater died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility. The service will be held on Wednesday, June 3, at 10:30 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater, with Pastor David Pierce from the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 2, from 4-7 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home. Barbara was born Dec. 8, 1923, in State College, Pa., to William and Ruth (Turnbow) Hull. She spent her childhood in Paris, Tenn., and Shreveport, La., where she attended business school and Centenary college. Barb was the Supply Depot Department Head at the Barksdale AFB during World War II. There she met and married Air Force Lt. Col. William B. Lloyd on June 7, 1945, in Urbana, Ill. Soon after, they moved to Okemos, where they lived for 50 years. Mrs. Lloyd enjoyed being a wife, mother and homemaker to her family. She was a 38-year member of East Lansing Trinity Church, where she was active in numerous church activities and then the First Baptist Church since relocating to Coldwater in 1998. She was a member of the D.A.R., the Faculty Wives at Michigan State University and was an active volunteer with the voting polls in Okemos. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family, especially at their cottage on Lake Charlevoix. Mrs. Lloyd was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 14, 1991, her brother, Jon Hull, and her sister, Anne Brown. She is survived by her sons, Rhett and Kathy Lloyd of Sedona, Ariz., and Jon and Nancy Lloyd of Elk River, Minn.; her daughters, Martha and Bob Emmons of Silver Spring, Md., and Melissa and Mike Sussex of Coldwater; her sister-in-law, Phil Hull of Springhill, La.; grandchildren Rob and Daniel Emmons, Eric, Amanda and Matthew Sussex, Nick and Chris Lloyd, and Samantha Lloyd; and great-grandchildren Maria and John Emmons. Bernice Kelly 1916-2009 Bernice Kelly, 93, Madison Heights, formerly of Sebewaing, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Penny, in Madison Heights following a two-month illness. She was born March 29, 1916 in Bay City, daughter of the late Pierre and Lydia (Bellon) Garcin. She was united in marriage to Edwin (Bud) F. Kanehl on November 24, 1938. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1957. She then married Henry J. Kelly on July 7, 1962. He died on April 13, 1969. She and her husband owned and operated the Center Road Bar in Essexville before purchasing Bud's Bar in Kilmanagh, changing the name to Bernie's and finally to Kelly's Bar. She operated it until it closed on April 28, 2001. Bernice was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Sebewaing. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting the casino, bowling, visiting with her friends and family, especially the people that came to see her at Kelly's Bar. Surviving are two daughters, Candy (Robert) Oeschger, Port Hope and Penny Howard, Madison Heights; five grandchildren, Tracey (Jim) Schenk, Bad Axe, Tara Oeschger, East Lansing, Tyler Oeschger, Port Hope, Erin (Jeff) Ferris, Madison Heights and Leigh (Jessy) Wayna, Ferndale; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and one niece, Joanne (Ray) Niezurawski, Bay City. Charles Frederick Kline, 84 of Midland passed away March 21, 2009, at Brookdale Senior Living in Midland. He was born May 7, 1924 in Litchfield, to the late Dr. Fred and Hilda (Smith) Kline. He married Lois Brown of Midland on May 29, 1954, who predeceased him. Mr. Kline graduated as valedictorian from Litchfield High School in 1942. He served in the U. S. Navy from June 1943 to June 1946 as an ensign. Upon his discharge he attended Hillsdale College where he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree. During college he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He then entered the University of Pennsylvania obtaining his Master of Business Administration from the Wharton Graduate School of Business. He retired from Dow Chemical Co. of Midland after a long career in industrial management. As a young man he was very active in 4-H. He raised and exhibited livestock at the local county fair. His love of fairs and livestock continued throughout his life. As an adult he owned harness race horses, which competed at fairs and tracks throughout the Midwest and Canada. He served as Harness Racing secretary for the Midland County Fair from 1958 through 2008. He also served as a director and president on the Board of Directors for the Northern Michigan Fairs and Racing Association. In 2007, Charlie Kline was inducted into the Michigan Harness Racing Hall of Fame. Mr. Kline had a strong desire to promote education. He was an avid supporter of Hillsdale College giving support to various areas within the College, including sponsorship of the Charles F. Kline, Chair of History and Management, which is currently held by Burton Folsom author of “The Myth of the Robber Barons.” He is also a member of the college’s President Club. He is survived by two sisters, Harriet (Ellwood) Janney of Ottawa Hills, Ohio,  and Jane (Dr. James) Roberts of Bonita Springs, Fla.; sister-in-law, Margaret Kline of Hillsdale; 10 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his two brothers, James C Kline and Thomas P Kline.   A memorial service begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday at United Church of Christ, 4100 Chestnut Hill. Interment will be 11:30 a.m. Thursday in Litchfield at the Mount Hope Cemetery with a luncheon following at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale. Charles Wayne Saunders, 70, of Austin, Texas, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Christopher House Hospice, Austin, Texas. He was born in Sturgis Mich., April 9, 1939, to the late Beatrice Fackler Birdsall. After graduating from White Pigeon High School, White Pigeon, Mich., where he excelled at sports, he joined the Armed Forces in 1958 and faithfully served his country for 26 years until he retired in 1984.  His tours of duty included Viet Nam, Thailand, Guam, and many others around the world. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Charles and Rosa Saunders, White Pigeon, Mich.; and his five children, Charles Saunders, Pflugerville, Texas; Cindy Jackson, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Saunders, currently deployed in Iraq; Vernon Saunders, Huntsville, Ala.; Katrina Stahl, Stafford, Va.; and his 22 grandchildren.  He is also survived by his ex-wife and friend Nancy Vogel, San Antonio, Texas, and his siblings, Timothy Saunders, Danny Saunders, and Tami Salisbury, all of White Pigeon, Mich.; and Janet Enders, Pottsville, Pa. Clare James Loucks, age 85, of Adrian died Saturday, May 30, 2009, at Toledo Hospital. He was born Sept. 2, 1923, in Adrian to C. Clifford and Esther (Morrison) Loucks. He graduated from Manchester High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946. On Nov. 21, 1950, he married A. Jeanette Alfrey in Adrian. She preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2005. Clare had been employed by Tecumseh Products for 41½ years, retiring on June 1, 1988. He was a member of the Berean Baptist Church in Adrian. Clare is survived by one son, Richard (friend, Cynthia) Loucks of Adrian; two daughters, Helen Loucks of New Britain, Conn., and Yvonne Cruz of Adrian; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Loucks of Virginia; six grandchildren, Jeremy (Darlena) Loucks, Joselyn Loucks, Johanna (Steven) Galyen, Christina Loucks, Diane Psaute and Laura Ann (Tracey) Mason. In addition to his wife, A. Jeanette, he was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Harold Loucks; and a brother, Dean Loucks. Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, daughter of the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years, moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Wash. and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas and many nieces and nephews. Donald D. McCarty Sr., 76, of Hudson passed away Friday, May 29, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. He was born April 10, 1933, in Dover Township, Mich., the son of Homer Leroy and Aura Edith (Paulsen) McCarty. He married Lore Dollmann on July 15, 1967, in Neckarsulm, Germany, and she survives. Donald retired from the U.S. Military in 1971, with 21 years of service, and then retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Morenci in 1999, with more than 10 years of service. He owned and operated McCarty’s Old World Bakery in Hudson and served as an Evangelist for the New Apostolic Church in Morenci for more than 20 years. Don served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and was in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era. He dearly loved his family and the ministry and enjoyed fishing and birdwatching. Surviving Don, besides his wife, Lore of Hudson, are four children, Donald D. (Susan) McCarty Jr. and Karl McCarty, all of Hudson; Michael McCarty of Germany and Peggy McCarty of Hawaii; three grandchildren, Gavin, Elizabeth and Victor McCarty, all of Hudson; five sisters, Betty (Glen) Crisler of Adrian, Mich., Mary (Marlin) Cummins of Alvordton, Ohio, Barbara (John) Lower of Pioneer, Ohio, Diana (Marty) Wagner of Morenci, Mich., and Dixie (Gerry) Baldwin of Wauseon, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marjorie Smith; and five brothers, Dale, Dwight, Dock, Richard and Dan McCarty. Donald R. Aldrich, 81, of Three Rivers, Mich., and formerly of White Pigeon, died Thursday, May 28, 2009, at his home, following a short illness. He was born July 3, 1927, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of Frank and Dee (Wilson) Aldrich. He had resided in the Three Rivers area for the last five years, coming from White Pigeon. He married Irene E. Sheets, and they were later divorced. He later married Gloria Brown, who preceded him in death. He was most recently married to Joyce J. (Nottoli) Aldrich. He was owner and operator of Aggregate processors Inc. of White Pigeon until his retirement. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Centreville. He was a graduate of LaGrange High School and a past member of the Sauganash Country Club in Three Rivers. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. Surviving are his wife, Joyce J. Aldrich of Three Rivers; two daughters, Linda (Kenneth) Linn of Edwardsburg and Barbara Jacobs of Euless, Texas; two sons, Ron (Sandy) Aldrich of Schoolcraft and Larry Aldrich of Mansfield, Ohio; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Kathy Nottoli, Jody (Steve) Robinson and Barbara Reber; two stepsons, Michael (Donna) Nottoli and Thomas (Kitty) Nottoli; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dr. Keith Whitehouse died June 1, 2009, at the age of 89. Dr. Whitehouse was born Jan. 22, 1920, and grew to adulthood in Albion, Mich. At Albion College he met his sweetheart Lorene. He completed medical school at the University of Michigan and, after his service in the Navy (Pacific theater during World War II), he and Lorene settled in her hometown, Morenci, Mich. Dr. Keith practiced medicine in Morenci and the surrounding area, later in partnership with Dr. Diccion, until 1983. He knew and respected his patients and their families and graciously responded to middle-of-the-night calls.  With his “little black bag” he traveled the country roads on house calls too numerous to count. Shortly before Keith retired, the couple moved from Summit Street to Mulberry Road and took up serious gardening on Birdland Farm, where he dubbed himself the “Park Ranger.” With Lorene, he planted and nourished tiny seedlings that now are the tall pine trees that grace the property, put up jars and jars of tomato sauce and rhubarb, mowed acres of yard, and hiked the woods. Many people in the area can say they were “delivered” by “Doc” Whitehouse. Many patients came to the Morenci Hospital that he saw to reality back in the early 1960s. Many folks can say they tapped a toe a time or two to his lively Dixieland jazz music, he at the piano and his musician pals rounding out the band. Keith loved his many friends — too many to name here. He loved his grandchildren: TJ, Jill, Brad, Scott and Meredith Whitehouse, Kathy Westfall and Betsy Jeffrey. He loved his great-grandchildren: Anthony, Sam, Mariana, Travis, Isaac, Walker and Oscar. He loved Morenci and Birdland Farm and his home there. He loved his children: Bill, Jim and Susie. But unquestionably, at the top of his list of loves was his wife of nearly 68 years, Lorene, whom he loved with tenderness and devotion. In lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to the Morenci Education Foundation, 500 E. Page St., Morenci, MI 49256 or the First Congregational Church, 104 W. Locust St., Morenci, MI 49256, or plant a tree. Visitation will be at the Congregational Church in Morenci on Thursday, June 4, 2009, from 9:30 to 11 a.m. The memorial service will be held at the Congregational Church in Morenci at 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2009. E. Lester Monroe, 91, of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. He was born March 23, 1918, in Harrison to Mortimer Linus and Euphemia Isabel (Merritt) Monroe. He was married June 24, 1940, to Beulah May Stubberfield. They shared more than 63 years together before she passed away in March of 2004. Lester served his country in the U.S. Army as a mechanic and driver during World War II. He worked for various companies, ran a service station, retiring from Watkins Oil where he worked as a diesel mechanic for 31 years. He retired in 1983 and enjoyed many winters in Florida. Lester is survived by his children, Kay (Larry) Hickman, Agnes Monroe-Wyatt, Lois Glassburn and John (Bonnie) Monroe; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sons-in-law, L. Francis Glassburn and Richard Wyatt; sisters Grace, Pauline, Viola Almira, and Mildred. There will be a memorial service for Lester Monroe 11 a.m. Saturday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale with Dr. Daniel Pann officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Edward A. Safko Almont Twp. Edward A. Safko, 85, a 48-year resident of the Almont Twp. area, passed away Sunday (May 31, 2009) at his home. Ed was born August 28, 1923, in Hazleton, Pa., the son of Alex and Michaelena (Vernigigif) Safko. He married Annie Panko on September 19, 1948 at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Hazleton, Pa. She preceded him in death on July 15, 2008. Ed retired as a consultant for "Focus Hope of Detroit" in 1999. He previously worked in the tool & die business with the Ex-Cello Corporation in the metro area. His love was farming and raising his chickens and ducks. Ed served his country during WWII in the Army/Air Force and belonged to the VFW in Imlay City, where he served as its quartermaster for many years. Eleanor Lucille Kennedy, age 77, of Sturgis, Mich., was called home by her Heavenly Father on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, from Thurston Woods Village. She was born Dec. 28, 1931, at the home of her grandparents in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Gladwyn and Beatrice (Murray) Kennedy. Eleanor graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1950. After working locally for five years, she enrolled at Emmaus Bible School in Oak Park, Ill., and was employed there for 17 years. She later worked for the Regular Baptist Press in the graphic arts department doing desktop publishing, retiring in 2001 and returning to Sturgis. Eleanor was very involved in her churches, the Woodside Bible Chapel in Maywood, Ill., and the Sturgis Bible Chapel in Sturgis. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, walking at the Doyle Center, and was an avid knitter, knitting hundreds of vests for children in Africa. Surviving are two sisters, Laura (Richard) McCoy of Sturgis and Patricia (Frank) Hercinger of Fennville; four nieces, Brenda (Kenneth) Moore of Kalamazoo, Deborah (Larry) Fraylick of Sturgis, Dawn (Paul) Clements of Plymouth and Becky (Michael) Wendlick of Green Bay, Wis.; a nephew, Frank G. Hercinger of Fennville; five great-nephews; a great-great-niece; an aunt, Lucille Holt of Sturgis; numerous cousins; and many close friends, including Florence Ekkel. The family will receive friends and relatives from 5-7 p.m. today at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Services celebrating the life of Eleanor L. Elizabeth M. Tucker, 83, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Allegiance Health in Jackson.  She was born Oct. 31, 1925, in Springport to Charles and Delma (Clough) Talbot. Mrs. Tucker retired from Spartan Electronics in Jackson.  She was a previous resident of Florida and the Hillsdale area prior to residing in Jackson. Surviving are two daughters, Jean (Stacey) Billman of Reading and Dianna Samarco of Homasassa, Fla.; two sons, Ron Doty of Jackson and Charles Barbeau of Indiana; two sisters, Barbara Drake of Jackson and Margaret Talbot of Manitau Beach; 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Erma M. Miller, 102, of 1995 S-600 W, Topeka, Ind., died at 10:37 a.m. on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at Goshen General Hospital, Goshen, Ind., where she had been a patient since May 18. She was born May 13, 1907, in LaGrange County, Ind., to James Elmer and Ida (Eash) Miller. On Feb. 8, 1930, she married Ivan M. Miller. He died Oct. 15, 1994. She was a homemaker and a member of the Emma Mennonite Church, where she had been active in the W.M.S.C.  She had served as a volunteer at the Fort Wayne State Hospital for several years and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a 1924 graduate of Shipshewana High School and enjoyed quilting and gardening and spending time in her flower beds. Survivors include two daughters, Carol (Allen) Zehr of Bedford, Ind., and Evelyn (Ellsworth) Byler of Sturgis, Mich.;  three sons, Gaylord (Marilyn) Miller of Topeka, Maurice (Norma) Miller of Topeka, and Larry (Fran) Miller of Topeka; 19 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;  five half-sisters, Ruth Louise Lambright of Goshen, Helen (Wayne) Neff of LaGrange, Rosalie Yoder of Topeka, Marilyn (Lester) Burkey of Hebron, Ind., and Carolyn Dillon of Ligonier, Ind.;  and two half-brothers, Dwight Miller of Goshen and DeWayne (Shelby) Miller of Cape Coral, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Delmar and Ronald Miller; a half-brother, Francis Miller; two sisters, Beulah Stutzman and Charlotte Morningstar; and two brothers, William and Harold Miller. Geraldine O. Adams, 89, of Elkhart, Ind., died Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Golden Living Center in Elkhart, Ind., following an extended illness.   She was born Nov. 17, 1919, in Three Rivers, Mich., a duaghter of Carl and Forest Edna (Leeth) Jewell.   She had lived in Elkhart, Ind., since 2006, coming from Union, Mich.   On April 2, 1949, she married Dan A. Adams in Bristol, Ind. He died Dec. 21, 1980.   During her early life she was employed by the telephone company and was a homemaker and sold Avon products. She was a member of Bettany Missionary Church in Elkhart, Ind., and was a children’s Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and cake decorating.   Surviving are a daughter, Karan E. Holt-Hartley of Elkhart, Ind.; a son, Kenneth E. (Pam) Adams of Elkhart, Ind.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold B. Jewell of Lake City, Mich., and Virgil (Annabelle) Jewell of South Bend, Ind.; several nieces and newphes. Jack W. Marsh Marlette Jack W. Marsh, 90, a long-time resident of Marlette, passed away peacefully Monday (June 1, 2009) at Lapeer Regional Medical Center. He was born September 21, 1918, on the family farm on Marsh Rd. in Burnside Twp., Lapeer Co., the son of the late Robert and Lena (Kohler) Marsh. Jack graduated from Marlette High School in 1938 and then went on to the Mortuary School of Science at Wayne State University, where he received his Mortuary License. He married Thelma Keys on June 30, 1945 in Marlette. Mr. Marsh and his twin brother, George, owned and operated the Marsh Funeral Chapel in Marlette from 1945 until their retirement in 1984. They were also responsible for receiving emergency fire calls and notification of local firemen. The brothers also owned and operated the Marlette Insurance Agency for many years and provided ambulance service for the community of Marlette. John Matthew Albright, 45, of Allen, passed away Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He was born Feb. 13, 1964, in Coldwater to Clarence and Sally (Spade) Albright and had been employed at Tenneco Automotive in Litchfield. John enjoyed taking care of his children and socializing at the Allen Coffee Shop, as well as camping, fishing and the outdoors. He was an avid car enthusiast, especially a big Dodge fan, attending car shows and participating in car cruises. John also enjoyed auctions and Saturdays at the Hillsdale County Sale Barn. Kelly Jean Eagan-Walker, age 48, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Saturday evening, May 30, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was born March 9, 1961, in Attleboro, Mass., a daughter of Dennis and Katherine (Wentworth) Eagan. Kelly had resided in Sturgis since 1971, coming from Texas. She was a graduate of Sturgis High School with the class of 1982. Kelly was very involved in the Community Mental Health Clubhouse and loved to babysit many children in her apartment complex. She was a computer “nut” and enjoyed playing Pogo. She is survived by one daughter, Heather Schrock of Constantine; two grandchildren, Gabrielle and Deondre; her parents, Denny and Jan Eagan of Sturgis; five sisters, Theresa (Dave) Asher of Coldwater, Deborah (Kevin) Gray of Sturgis, Cheri (Terry Smutz) Daskam of Sturgis, Dawn Hurley of Sturgis and Micki (Charlie Holleman) Hall of Sturgis; three brothers, Mike (Julie) Eagan of Sturgis, David Eagan of Sturgis and Jerry (Linda) Hall of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; a grandmother, Lois Eagan of Sturgis; special friend Alexis Janes of Sturgis; and her many friends, including her Village Manor neighbors and her fellow Clubhouse members. Lou Wanda (Guza) Armstead, 56, of Sheridan Township, died Friday Aug. 29, 2008 in Huron Medical Center of Bad Axe., She was born Feb. 21, 1952 in Cass City, daughter of William and Wanda (Billot) Kipp., She married Leon F. Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. Margery E. Whitten Metamora Margery E. Whitten, 98, of Metamora since 1937, passed away Sunday (May 31, 2009). She was born January 17, 1911, in Phillipsburg, Kan., to Samuel and Emma (Hall) Matteson. She married J. George Whitten. Mrs. Whitten was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1950 and was a devout Christian who loved the Lord. She had her Masters in Education from Eastern and taught in Kansas originally, then in a Lapeer area country school, ending her career at the E.E. Irwin Elementary after 35 years. Margery loved to travel, known to be ready to leave in ten minutes. She enjoyed playing Scrabble and reading - always with a book in her hand. She adored her grandchildren. Mary Marie Staniloiu Farcus Mussey Twp. Aunt Mary, 91, of Mussey Township, passed away Friday evening (May 29, 2009) at St. Joseph Mercy Port Huron Hospital, after a brief illness. She was born Saturday, August 11, 1917, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of the late Jacob and Stanica (Balcus) Staniloiu. Mary was a 1934 graduate of Capac High School. She served her country with the Army Nurses Cadet Corp from 1943 to 1946. She became a registered nurse after completing Hurley Medical Centers nursing program in 1946 and had worked for Hurley Medical Center until 1951. From 1951 to 1971, she had worked for Youngstown Hospital and from 1971 until retirement in 1982 at Lapeer Regional Hospital. She was a member of Capac Community Church, where she enjoyed many good times. She enjoyed flowers, cooking, sports, education, farming and attending every event with family and friends enjoying good conversation. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Michael Dale Kuenzel, 37, of Burr Oak, Mich.,unexpectedly went to be with his Lord and Savior May 27, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 30, 1972, in Three Rivers, Mich., a son to Dale S. and Phyllis (Plank) Kuenzel. Michael’s parents were so blessed to have this special child. He was such a joy although he faces many obstacles in his life. His favorite nickname was “Mit the Kit.” Michael lived in Sturgis most of his life where he attended Sturgis High School, moving to Burr Oak in 2008. He had worked in and around the Sturgis area since he got out of school. Michael’s greatest passion in life was helping other people. He worked at soup kitchens, helping to feed the poor and homeless. He never met a stranger because he would always stop to help someone out. Michael’s happiest times were when he volunteered to help with the Special Olympics and chaperoning as they played different sports around the state. Michael was involved with the Special Olympics for many years. Sometimes renting a court at the Doyle Center so they could practice before the basketball games. He once said, “They gave me more than I could ever give back”. Michael always said his greatest role model was his brother Bryan who played in Special Olympics. Michael had a great love for music, not only listening, but writing songs and often performing in his best friend’s band. Michael had recently started attending Grace Christian Fellowship in Sturgis, saying it felt like home. He touched many lives with his kindness and his very loving and giving heart. Michael is survived by his dad, Dale S. Kuenzel of Burr Oak; his mother and step-father, Phyllis L. and John Dudley of Howe, Ind.; a brother, Bryan Kuenzel of Burr Oak; paternal grandmother, Ruth Holmes of Burr Oak; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Plank of Constantine and several aunts, uncles and cousins. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Michael Dale Kuenzel will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Christian Fellowship, 300 Timothy St., Sturgis, Mich. The Rev. Ross Gerber will officiate. Michael Lawrence Patrias, Sr., of Hillsdale, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at the Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born Aug. 4, 1946, in Garden City, Mich., the son of Theophial and Lovetta (Short) Patrias. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marlene (Burton) Patrias whom he married on Oct. 29, 1979; three children, Charles Kidd of Austin, Texas, Michael Patrias, Jr. of Hillsdale, and Heather (Wes) Barns of Hillsdale; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Vivian (Raymond) Pavalak of Lincoln Park and Margot (John) Brooks of Berea, Ky.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Phillip Patrias. Mr. Patrias was employed at Leutheuser’s in Hillsdale in the body shop division where he received Best in Class Awards from General Motors. He was also a past member of the Michigan Street Rod Association. A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Michael Lawrence Patrias, Sr. will be at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 1 p.m. Saturday. Interment will take place in the Wild Cherry Cemetery in Ransom Township. Norma Jean Kehoe, age 67, of Clinton passed away at her home on Friday, May 29, 2009. Norma was born on June 22, 1941, in Bridgewater to David L. and Virginia M. (Curtiss) Kehoe. Norma was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Clinton. She enjoyed being part of the Clinton Elementary School reading mentoring program. She loved spending time working in her yard and crocheting. Norma was an avid Detroit Tigers fan and enjoyed watching her grandkids play baseball, as well. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Norma is survived by her stepfather, Paul Schwab, of Manchester; one son, David Porter of Onsted; and three daughters Lisa (Roydon) Strom of Onsted, Marcy (Mark) Haggard of Clinton, and Pamela (John) Dean of Ypsilanti; one brother, Daniel (Thelma) Kehoe of Rochester, Mich.; one sister, Elaine (Jesse) Lopez of Troy, Mich., and seven grandchildren, Steven, Andrew, Lucas, Nathan, Ryan, Kevin and Marisa. Ola G. Smith, 95, of Reading, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009, at Evergreen Manor in Montpelier, Ohio. She was born March 24, 1914 in Woodbridge Township to Vern and Elsie (McCord) Stenger. For many years, Ola worked at Wagner Industries in Reading. She was also an active partner on the farm with her husband, Glen Smith, whom she married Aug. 10, 1930. He preceded her in death in 1995. She was a member of the West Reading and Reading United Methodist Churches. Glen and Ola enjoyed playing piano and banjo together and entertained in many areas around Hillsdale County. They also played with the Mummers Band in Florida and the Fiddlers Association. Ola was an avid Euchre player, fisherman and gardener. Survivors include one daughter, Louise Rutledge of Reading; two sons, Bernard (Glenda) Smith of Reading and Ted Smith of Savannah, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Her parents, husband (Glen), son-in-law (Robert Rutledge), four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at West Reading Cemetery, with the Rev. DeAnn Dobbs officiating. Olga Cox,  age 87, of Manchester passed away on May 31, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian.  Olga was born on Oct. 16, 1921, in Salyersville, Ky., the daughter of George and Maude (Bailey) Collinsworth. She married James Cox in 1940 and he preceded her in death on July 12, 1992. She retired from Ford Motor Company, Saline. Olga was a member of the Manchester United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Albert) Osga of Tecumseh, Delores Gebhardt, Darlene (William) Alber and Betty (Gerald) Mann, all of Manchester; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Rae Jean "Pud" Mohr Chaudoin, 86, born and raised near Coldwater, and a former long-time resident of Angola, Ind., died of natural causes Friday, March 20, 2009, at the Christian Health Center, Hopkinsville, Kent.  She was preceded in death by her husband William (Bill) A. Chaudoin, and a son Thomas (Tom) R. Chaudoin. She is survived by her sons William J. (Joe) Chaudoin of Herndon, Kent., Andrew (Andy) A. Chaudoin of Palm Springs, Calif., and her daughter Colette A. Chaudoin Park of Trophy Club, Texas, eight grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Chaudoin was a 50-year member of the Angola Church of Christ, a member of the Angola Order of Eastern Star and the Coldwater Women of the Moose. She retired from the Metropolitan School District of Steuben County, Ind., where she worked many years as a teacher's aide and library aide. She always loved children and in her later years enjoyed playing with her great-grandchildren. Raymond C. Turner, age 101, passed away Monday morning, June 1, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug, 23, 1907, in Bristol, Ind., a son of the late Raymond and Katherine (Leatherman) Turner. Raymond was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1926. On Dec. 8, 1939, he married Retha Bender in South Bend, Ind. She died Aug. 12, 2004. Following more than 15 years of dedicated employment, he retired from Ross Laboratories in Sturgis. Prior to joining Ross Laboratories he had been employed by the Sturgis Journal for 18 years. After his retirement he worked at the Sturgis Public Library for 10 years. He attended the First Baptist Church in Sturgis and was a member of AARP and Swinging Seniors. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds and gardening. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann (Allen) Wisler of Howe, Ind., and Jill (Gregory) Peck of Sturgis; one son, Allan (Virginia) Turner of Sagamore Beach, Mass.; six grandchildren, Nathan (Jodi) Wisler of Howe, Ind., Aaron (Dawn) Wisler of Shipshewana, Ind., Deann (Larry) Jennings of Traverse City, Stephanie (Marc) Giampa of New Hampshire, Jeffrey Turner of Hawaii and Benjamin Turner of Sagamore, Mass.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Ronald W. Bedford 1956-2009 Ronald William Bedford, 53, Ubly, formerly of Caseville, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. He was born in Pigeon on April 14, 1956, son of Walter Howard and the late Elinor Margaret (Rathje) Bedford. Ronald was stricken with a sudden illness when he was 1 1/2 years old, and throughout the years he was loved, cherished and cared for by his parents and numerous caregivers. Most recently, he was a resident at Genesis and Hurford Acres in Ubly. He enjoyed playing ball and games with his caregivers, and loved visiting with his family and friends, whom he liked to tease. He had a joyous laugh and a "hoot & holler." He would enjoy listening to music for hours, especially his father's recordings. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Howard and Ellamae Bedford, Pigeon; siblings, Nancy Bedford, Bad Axe, Walt and Kristin Bedford, Aurora, Col., Jeff and Carmen Bedford, Caseville, Bob (Michele) Bedford, East China; stepbrothers, Mick Conners, Caseville and Jeff Diachenko, Bay Port; stepsisters, Colleen (Paul) Poisson, Caseville, Melony (Marc) Cross, Texas, Teresa Stiles, Flint and Chris (Mike) Bean, Swartz Creek; step-sister-in-law, Sue O'Conners, Caeville and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his step-mother June Bedford and a stepbrother, Patrick O'Conners. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 3 p.m. at the Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon. Visitation will take place from 2 p.m. until time of service on Thursday, June 4. Rosemary Miller, age 59, of Colon, Mich., passed away unexpectedly, Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Rosemary was born Nov. 15, 1949, in Alma, a daughter of the late LaVon Burton and Calvin Sutton. On Sept. 21, 1996, she married Ora Miller in Colon. Rosemary had lived all her adult life in Colon. She was a homemaker and had worked at several area nursing homes. She was a member of the Colon American Legion Auxiliary and Colon Lioness Club. She is survived by her husband, Ora Miller of Colon; two daughters, Kimberly J. (Phillip) Day of Burr Oak and Vicki (Shawn) Machan of Fennville; five grandchildren, Tori, Ryan, Parker, Arionna and Brogan; seven brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy A. McCartney, and a brother, Timothy Sutton. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Rosemary Miller will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon, with David J. Farrell officiating.  Private interment of cremains will take place at a later date in Lakeside Cemetery in Colon.  If desired, the family suggests memorials be made in memory of Rosemary to the American Cancer Society.  Envelopes are available at the funeral home.   |

Ruth Belle Rogers of Hillsdale passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility. She was born Dec. 20, 1912 in Jerome, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Piper) Kane. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (James) MacKenzie of North Adams and Susan (Joseph) Cogswell of Hillsdale; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Phyllis Kyser; four brothers, Ernest, Clarence, Glenn and Bernard Kane; two sisters, Marie Anson and Minnie Fouty and a good friend, Bill Williams. Mrs. Rogers graduated from Jerome High School and she retired from the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility where she worked as a housekeeper for many years. She was a member of the On the Ball Extension Club, the Social Thursday Club and the Jerome United Methodist Church. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Ruth Belle Rogers will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in North Adams on Wednesday beginning at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Paul Hane officiating. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home in North Adams. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility or to the Alzheimer’s Association. |

Ruth Rigg, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 2, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. Ruth was born to Leon and Marion (Horton) Fenner on Feb. 25, 1936. On June 26, 1954, she married Remus Rigg at the First Baptist Church, Coldwater. She was the mother to Steven Rigg (deceased), Catherine and Steven Harari, Loomis, Calif. and Lisa and Orval Huff, Holt. Ruth was the loving grandmother to Kyle and Brooke (Haring), Huff, Coldwater; Stacey (Huff) and Joey Brigman, Holt; Alaina (Huff) and Dustin Poe, Lansing; Thomas and John Harari, Loomis, Calif., and is the Great Nana to Genevieve and Anastasia Brigman and Grace Huff. A special family in her life includes Keith and Insa Raymond along with their children Heinke, Annie, Bobby, Glenn, and Carla. Ruth led a very full and active life. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Coldwater for 42 years where she served on several boards and committees. Farm Bureau Women, Branch Co. Republican Women, The Red Hat Society and DAR kept Ruth active. At one time, she was a member of the Bronson Child Study Club and went on to help found the Triangle Child Study Club. In 1977, she was appointed by Governor Milliken as the first woman to serve on the State Agriculture Labor Commission. She was also elected as the Batavia Township Clerk for twelve years. In 1990, Rigg Dairy Farms was recognized as the Michigan State Dairy Farm of the year where Ruth’s major responsibility was Chief Financial Officer and on occasion was Logistics Officer driving the tractor and running for parts. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 5, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Coldwater with Rev. David Pierce officiating. Burial will be at Batavia Cemetery, Branch County. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. at the Gillespie Funeral Home, Coldwater and from 10 a.m. until time of service Friday at the church. Sister Lois Spear, formerly known as Sister Marie Jude Spear, died on June 1, 2009, at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 88 years of age and in the 63rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation. Sister was born in Estherville, Iowa, to Horace and Katherine (Wacht) Spear. Sister graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich., a Master of Arts Degree in History from DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in History from Loyola University in Chicago, Ill. Sister Lois spent 31 years ministering in education in Rockford and Wilmette, Ill.; West Palm Beach and Miami Shores, Fla.; Detroit, Grosse Pointe Farms and Adrian, Mich.; Cleveland, Ohio, and Raleigh, N.C. She taught at six Congregation schools: Regina High School in Wilmette, Ill., Rosarian Academy in West Palm Beach and Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, both in Florida; Dominican High School in Detroit and Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, both in Michigan; and Hoban Dominican High School in Cleveland, Ohio. Sister was Communications Director for one year for the Mercy Sisters in Potomac, Md., three years for the Franciscan Sisters in La Crosse, Wis., and three years for the Adrian Dominican Sisters. She was also editor of the Intermountain Catholic Newspaper in Salt Lake City, Utah, and reporter for The Catholic Mirror in Des Monies, Iowa. Sister became a Regina resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 1995. Sister Lois is survived by a brother, William Spear of Louisville, Colo.; a sister, Dorothy Theesfeld of Estherville, Iowa, and loving nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 3, 2009, in the Rose Room of the Dominican Life Center, followed by Vigil Prayer at 7 p.m. in St. Catherine Chapel. The Funeral Liturgy will be offered in St. Catherine Chapel  at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 4, 2009. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Steven Vance Peterson, 57, of Hillsdale, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at his home. He was born Jan. 22, 1952, in Coldwater to Sigurd and Geraldine (Dressel) Peterson. He was married Feb. 12, 1988 to Margaret Shaffer and she survives. Steven was a former employee of Marquardt L.L.C. of Livonia, and former longtime employee at Allied Products in Hillsdale. He was an avid bowler and former junior bowling coach in Coldwater. He loved the outdoors and was a fisherman and hunter. Survivors include his wife Margaret; daughter, Jo (Mike) Johnson of Kalamazoo; step-sons, Ian Bernard of Quincy and Aaron (Jennifer) Bernard of Osseo; five grandchildren; sisters, Jean (Jerry) Pottenger of Manchester, Ind., and Dawn (David) Wilcox of Quincy; brothers, David Peterson and Eric Peterson, both of Quincy. There will be a memorial vistation for Steven Peterson from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. Private family interment will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Ransom Township at a later date. Theresa M. Messing 1912-2009 Theresa M. Messing, 96, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at her home with hospice care. She was born on November 14, 1912 in Detroit, daughter of the late August and Barbara (Nowiski) Romzek. Theresa and Leonard Messing were united in marriage on June 22, 1935 in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. Together they farmed in Sigel Township and raised their family. Leonard preceded her in death on December 11, 2007. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella of Bad Axe, the Altar Society of OLLH and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed sewing and quilting for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards. Theresa was a 4-H leader for many years and a member of the Sigel Extension Group. Surviving are her seven children, Shirley (John) Hoffman, Oscoda, Patricia (Clarence) Heleski, Ubly, Russell (Elizabeth) Messing, Mead, Wash., Calvin (Sharon) Messing, Manchester, Dale (Diane) Messing, Taylor, Texas, Bruce (Jeanne) Messing, Nebo, NC and Bradley (Julie) Messing, Manchester; 39 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and three brothers, Ray (Delores) Braun, Port Austin, Orville (Pat) Braun, Harbor Beach and Kenneth Braun, Harbor Beach for a total of 113 living descendants. She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Messing Jr.; a grandson, Benjamin Messing; two sisters, Agnes Romzek and Minni Romzek Susalla; seven brothers, Pete Romzek, Ralph Braun, Roman Braun, Tony Braun, Harry Braun, Wilfred Braun and Norman Braun and a brother-in-law, James Shubitowski. Walter C. Roemer 1915-2009 Walter C. Roemer, 93, Sebewaing, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon, following a six week illness. He was born on November 6, 1915 in Sebewaing, son of the late William and Margaret (Mayer) Roemer. He was united in marriage to Ruth M. Dressler on February 1, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2006. Walt had been a farmer in the Sebewaing area for many years. He also had been employed at Michigan Sugar Company for 50 campaign seasons. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Surviving are two daughters, Carol (Jack) Poppy, Unionville and Janet (Ken) Rink, Sebewaing; one grandson, Todd Poppy, Brighton; one great-grandson, Jarrett and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers; infant Rudolph, John, Herbert and Edwin Roemer; three sisters, infant Esther Roemer, Meta Stauffer and Frieda Finkbeiner. Funeral service was held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Rev. Michael Boyer officiated with burial in Silverlawn Cemetery. Walton D. "Josh" Brown 1926-2009 Walton D. "Josh" Brown, 83, passed away Tuesday morning, May 26, 2009 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe following a three-year illness. He was born on April 22, 1926 in Detroit, son of the late Orville and Marie (Barnes) Brown. He was united in marriage to Marion A. Schweitzer on April 30, 1949 in Linkville. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2001. Walton had been a cash crop and dairy farmer on their centennial farm in Brookfield Twp. for many years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. He was a member and past president of the Owendale Lions Club, served as Brookfield Twp. Supervisor from 1969 to 2000 and was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Army in the military police in the Philippines during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and especially enjoyed "crop checking around the area". Surviving are one daughter, Beth Brown, Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Kim (Cynthia) Brown, Columbiaville and Lee (Suzanne) Brown, Prescott; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Mardella Volz, Sebewaing and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Rev. Allen R. Stoll officiated with burial in the church cemetery. William C. Harmon, 80, of Quincy passed away Monday, June 1, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County, Coldwater.  He was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Quincy to Ivan O. and Juanita (Turrell) Harmon and graduated from Waldron High School in 1946. William was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a commercial truck driver for many years and retired from Simpson Industries in 1989 after 22 years of service. William was a member of the Union Church of Quincy,  82nd Airborne Division Club of Lansing, and the Quincy American Legion Post #157.  He was an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling and all sports. On Jan. 14, 1950, he married Joan Koeppe and she survives. Also surviving are daughter Denise (Bill) Kurtz of Coldwater, son David R. Harmon of Quincy, sister Ruth Shaull of Montpelier, Ohio, brothers Robbie Harmon of Waldron and Ivan Harmon, Jr. of San Bernardino, Calif.; grandchildren David A. Harmon, Nate Kurtz and Courtney Kurtz and great-grandchildren Brianna Harmon, Nicholas Harmon, Haileigh Lavergne and Bricen Lavergne. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with Pastor Scott Arnold officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery, Quincy. Visitation is scheduled Thursday from 5-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Union Church of Quincy, Quincy American Legion Post #157, or the Humane Society of Branch County (969 Wildwood Road, Quincy). |
