Born in Montepelier, Ohio, Alice Lee Wingard was raised in Coldwater before she moved to marry and live with her husband Gilbert Cambell Clarke in Glendale, Calif and then Milford, Utah. After surviving her husband of fifty years, she lived with her daughter Jessica in San Quentin, Calif., then Seattle, Wash. and then Boise, Idaho. She lived her final weeks with her son Pat in Miami, Fla. and expired Thursday morning, May 21 in his home. As was her wish, she died peacefully, at home, and in her own bed. She requested no funeral or service and that her ashes will be buried with her husband’s in Milford, Utah, which will be done on her ninetieth birthday this summer. She is survived by her brother Harry Wingard in Coldwater; her children Dan Clarke in Eaglerock, Calif., Pat Clarke in Miami, Fla. and Jessica Clarke in Boise, Idaho; her two grandchildren Nicole and Daniel Clarke in Eaglerock, Calif., as well as her second Symond family Dave, Mike, Lee, Lisa, Scot and Shaun Symond; and many friends. She was charming, witty, adventurous, wise and forever fun. We are all blessed by her incredible life. |

Donald F. Goetz, 80, of Blissfield passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Bixby Medical Center in Adrian. Don was born on Aug. 5, 1928, in Whiteford Township, Mich., the son of Norman and Wilma (Elg) Goetz. He was married on July 29, 1950, to Frances E. Smith. Don served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1952 until 1954. He worked at the Goble Lumber Co. and at Knoblauch International in Blissfield for a short time, followed by 22 years at Driggs Dairy in Palmyra and Toledo. Liking to keep busy, Don then worked part time for 22 years at Gilson’s HWI in Blissfield. Don was a lifelong member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Riga, where he was a very active member and had served as an usher and officer. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, dancing, and spending time and playing cards with friends. Surviving with his wife, Frances, are two daughters, Kathryn (David) Bourdette of Adrian and Jeanette Hoaglund of Grand Junction, Colo.; a sister, Janis Keen of DuBois, Pa.; four grandchildren, Matthew Hoaglund, Stefanie Hoaglund, William Bourdette and Jason Bourdette; and great-grandson, Noah Bourdette. Funeral services will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Riga. Burial will follow at Riga Cemetery.  Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m., and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tagsold Funeral Home in Blissfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hospice of Lenawee or to the Hickman Cancer Treatment Center. |

Eunice S. Ziegel, 87, of Fort Myers, Fla. died peacefully after a long illness on April 28, 2009. She was born in Lowpoint, Ill. Dec. 7, 1921. After graduating from Lowpoint High School, she married Clarence "Bud" Ziegel who preceded her in death. She and her late husband were the co-founders of Hillsdale Pump and Supply. After retiring from the business, they settled in Fort Myers where Eunice resided for 30 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Z. Peterson (C. Eric) of Chuluota, Fla; son, Rod (Gail) of Hillsdale; two grandsons, Peter A. and Kurt A. Ziegel, both of Chicago and her friend and companion Martin L. Rowe Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service was held at the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial services in Hillsdale are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Araba Temple Children's Transportation Fund, 2010 Hanson St. Fort Myers, FL 33901. The Araba Temple provides transportation for children to receive care at various Shriners Children's Hospitals. Eunice enthusiastically supported this endeavor, which provides assistance to children with injuries, burns and other disabilities. |

Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, 71, of Northwest Township, in Williams County, Ohio, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Lovejoy was a 1955 graduate of Edgerton High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Francis was part of the honor guard for President Eisenhower’s second inauguration parade and for one of Queen Elizabeth’s visits. He also traveled to Panama and the Suez Canal during his time in the Army. “Papa Bear Ed” was a lover of animals and shared a passion for the business he operated with his wife, Lovejoy’s Halfway House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. He worked for 44 years and nine months as a laborer at Hayes Albion in Bryan, Ohio. Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Bryan Ohio, the son of William Francis and Opal (Strup) Lovejoy. He married Ruth Marie Sexton on June 13, 1961, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she survives. Mr. Lovejoy is also survived by one daughter, Tina McCrea, of Bryan, Ohio; one son, Bill (Cindy) Lovejoy, of Montpelier, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert Arthur Kissinger III, Amber Opal Kissinger (Matthew) Farnham, Benjamin Ayre Hills, Bowen Jacob Hills, Krista Nicole McCrea, Holly Danielle McCrea, Matthew Link Meyer, and Dustin Ray Meyer; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Matthew Farnham, Copper Lewis Farnham and Aiden Matthew Terrill and his mother-in-law, Ester Sexton. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Tammy Marie Hills, on Nov. 13, 2006. Visitation will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in Krill Funeral Home 114 East Hull St., Edgerton, Ohio. Services for Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Tracey Hammond of Olde York Church, Non-Denominational, officiating. Gertrude Mary Blaskie, age 84, of Bronson, Mich., died early Monday morning, June 8, 2009, at the home of her sister Genevieve in Burr Oak where she had been staying due to her illness. Gertrude was born March 25, 1925, in Sherwood, a daughter of Peter and Julia (Francisco) Blaskie and a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1944, a few weeks after beginning her first job at the former Peoples State Bank of Bronson. Gertrude started as the assistant bookkeeper and assumed the position of bookkeeper within a year or so. Then in 1947, she became the assistant cashier. Through the early years, she also filled in as teller when needed. In about 1960, Gertrude’s job changed to entirely a desk job without teller functions. The Peoples State Bank merged with First National Bank of Quincy in 1969. Within a few years, this became First National Bank of South Central Michigan. Then in 1980, the bank merged with First of America, based in Kalamazoo.  Through it all, Gertrude remained a “constant” at the bank... a familiar smiling face and a helpful, gracious manner for all customers. At the time of her retirement on June 30, 1989, after a 45-year career, Gertrude was the bank’s customer service representative, handling new accounts, purchases of certificates of deposit and many other customer related functions. Gertrude was an active member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson where she served on several committees over the years, and she was a member of the Sacred Heart Society. She was a long-time member, treasurer and past president of the American Business Women’s Association and had served for several years on the Board of Directors of the former Bronson Community Chest.  She was honored as Polish Festival Queen in 1984. She enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening in her spare time. Surviving are her brothers, Theodore Blaskie of Seattle, Wash., Raymond Blaskie of Florida and Leon Blaskie of San Angelo, Texas; her sisters, Genevieve Cadman and Theresa Grossman, both of Burr Oak, and Angeline Tierney of Elkhart, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis. Prayers before Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from  2-4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.  Memorial donations are suggested to St. Mary Church or to the Bronson Food Pantry.     |

Godfrey (Gotch) E. Cronin, age 79, of Colon, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. Gotch was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Chicago, to the late Godfrey and Mary (Lynch) Cronin. He graduated from Leo High School in Chicago, (1948), St. Edward’s University (1955), and DePaul University. On June 18, 1955, married his wife of 54 years Margaret Therese (O’Connor). She preceded him in death most recently on April 17, 2009. Gotch was teacher at Springfield School in Midlothian, Ill., who later became superintendent of Posen-Robbins District 143 . He was co-author of the book “Four Hundred Navels: The Future of School Healthcare in America.” He was a pioneer lobbyist for the Title I Special Education Law in the state of Illinois. He was an active community member in Markham, Ill., serving on the library board, school board and at St. Gerard Majella Parish. Gotch and Therese started coming to Colon, in 1976 and then made it their permanent home in 1985. It is in Colon where he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Library Board, St. Joseph County Parks, St. Barbara‘s Catholic Church, Lions and founded Colon Sparkle. He is survived by his children, Maureen (David) Marthaler of Crete, Ill., Colleen (Mark) Muench of Chicago, Peter Cronin of Joliet, Ill., and Godfrey “Tommy” (Theresa) Cronin of Chicago; and five grandchildren. ‘Services will be held at Schipper Funeral Home LTD in Colon from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today.  On Saturday, the funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Barbara’s Church in Colon. In leu of flowers memorials may be made in memory of Gotch to the Colon Food Pantry or the Colon Library, Colon, MI 49040.   |

Hazel was a lifelong Waldron area resident. She enjoyed planting flowers, spending time with her family and dearly loved her children and grandchildren. Horst Renz Longenecker, 57, of Hillsdale, died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Lynwood Manor, Adrian. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany on Aug. 18, 1951, to Robert and Patricia (Walden) Longenecker. Horst graduated in 1969 from Burges High School in El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso and received a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in 1974. He was a favorite radio personality as a disc jockey in Texas and New Mexico. Horst had a longtime career in television as both a producer and news anchor at station KTSM News Channel 9 in El Paso. After moving to Michigan, he was employed at Hillsdale Veterinary Hospital for nine years. He is survived by his mother, Patricia Longenecker and brother, Robert Longenecker of El Paso; brother, William Longenecker of Austin, Texas; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Longenecker Sr. and his beloved Golden Retriever, Homer. Memorial services for Horst Longenecker will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hillsdale. Arrangements are entrusted to the VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home in Hillsdale. James Dale Ettinger, 60, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Monday June 8, 2009, at his home. He was born May 10, 1949, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to the late Albert and Thelma (Snook) Ettinger. James Dale was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and had been employed by the Grav-i-Flo Corporation for many years, until he was forced to retire due to health reasons. He is survived by four brothers, Eugene Ettinger of Mendon, Kenneth (Judy) Ettinger of Sturgis, and Lester Ettinger of Sturgis and Lyle (Denise) Ettinger of Georgia and many nieces and nephews. His parents and one brother; David Ettinger preceded him in death. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Jana L. (Day) Starr, age  30 of Marion, Ind., and a former Sturgis resident, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday afternoon June 8, 2009, at the Marion General Hospital. She was born Aug. 28, 1978, in Bluffton, Ind. a daughter of Scott and Pandy (Squires) Day. Jana had resided in Marion since 1996. Prior to moving to Marion she had resided in Sturgis, graduating from Sturgis High School with the class of 1996. On May 23, 2009, she married Raphael Starr at an outdoor service in Marion. She was a graduate of Indiana Wesleyan University receiving her bachelor’s degree in Christian education and her master’s degree in higher education at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. She was nearing the completion of her doctorate degree at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. Jana was currently employed as the Director of Student Retention for the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. Prior to joining St. Francis she had been employed by Indiana Wesleyan University as a resident hall director and director of student life. She actively attended the College Wesleyan Church and the Mississinewa Valley Community Band where she played the oboe. Jana enjoyed working in the yard and had a true love for animals. Jana had a real passion for bring people to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. She never hesitated in sharing her love for Jesus and took great pride in being a Christian. You never had to wonder how Jana felt about something because she would let you know if it was either right or wrong she was not one to believe in the “gray area”. She is survived by her loving husband ,Raphael; her parents, Scott and Pandy Day of Sturgis; a sister, Jill (Dustin) Pagels of Sturgis; maternal grandmother, Mary Cavanaugh of Sturgis; paternal grandmother Betty Day of Bluffton, Ind.; two nephews, Nathan and Matthew Pagels of Sturgis; mother- and father-in-law, Edmund and Barbara Starr of Columbia, S.C.; and three sisters-in-law, Katonya, Kimberly and Krystal, all of Columbia, S.C. The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at the College Wesleyan Church, 200 East 38th St., Marion, Ind., where services will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Thad Spring will officiate. Mrs. Starr will come home to Sturgis, where the family will receive friends from noon-2 p.m. Monday at the Sturgis Wesleyan Church, 907 N. She was born February 12, 1946, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Richard C. and Cecelia (Slamcik) Demko Ms. Demko was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Lapeer. Karen was a devoted mental health professional. She started with the Oakdale Center in Lapeer, working there for nearly 20 years. Since 1993, worked for the Macomb Oakland Regional Center as the Director of both the Corporate Compliance and Intact Respite Services. She loved her job and her co-workers. Karen was a true sports enthusiast. Shopping and gift giving were among her special interests, especially at Christmas time. Leslie R. Everett, age 89, of Colon, died Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Laurels of Coldwater. He had been in failing health. Leslie was born Dec. 24, 1919 in Centreville, son of Michael and Jennie (Weaver) Everett and was a lifelong area resident. He married Wava May Sell in May, 1942 in Colon. She died March 21, 2003. Leslie retired in 1982 from Douglas Manufacturing Company in Bronson after 32 years of service. He was also a livestock farmer raising horses, cattle, hogs, chickens, ponies and mules, and was best known for his horses and ponies. An Army veteran of World War II, Les served as an airplane and engine mechanic and was a member of the American Legion in Colon. He was also a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Sturgis, and a life member of the Prairieville Farm Association, a member of the St. Joseph County Horseman’s Association and a life member of the Michigan Farmer’s Hall of Fame. Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Robert Suits of Montague, Linda and Rex Barrington of Bronson, and Theresa and Douglas Clothier of Lufkin, Texas; his sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie M. and Kathrine Everett of Bronson and Paul Everett of Ocala, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a great great grandson; his sisters, Dorothy Threwhitt of Kalamazoo and Leona Glaze of Elkhart, Ind.; his brother Louis (Patricia) Everett of Three Rivers and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Everett of Lawton. He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Pastor Terry Siler of the First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Nottawa Cemetery with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Post 259 of the American Legion. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, where memorial donations are suggested to the Prairieville Hall of Fame. |

Guza in 1970 at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Parisville. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 1999., She is a graduate of Sandusky High School. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. Margaret L. Comstock, age 90, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Provincial House, Adrian. Margaret was born March 14, 1919, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the daughter of Earl and Delia (York) Smith. On June 18, 1940, she married Howard R. Sanderson in Grand Rapids, Mich.; he preceded her in death April 20, 1961. On June 6, 1963, she married Vincent C. Comstock in Brooklyn and he preceded her in death March 3, 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Clifford Smith, and a sister, Bette Van Heest. Margaret worked several miscellaneous jobs in her lifetime. She worked at Brooklyn Elementary School, J.C. Penney in Anderson, S.C., and for Braun Brothers Funeral Home, Brooklyn, before retiring at the age of 68 years. She was a past matron of the Eastern Star and currently was a member of the Cornerstone Community Church in Brooklyn. Margaret loved and enjoyed her family and friends; she especially looked forward to all special family occasions. She will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren.  Even in her advanced state of dementia, Margaret mothered and had a happy affect on the other residents at Provincial House with her smiles and greetings. She is survived by her brother. William Smith of Grand Rapids, Mich.; her daughters, Barbara (Donald) Harris of Napoleon, Roberta (Ernest) Gowen of Adrian; her sons, Michael (Janis) Sanderson of Homosassa, Fla., and William (Brenda) Sanderson of Adrian. Her stepdaughters, Sue (Bruce) Winder of Brooklyn and Bobbi (Bill) Ruber of Brooklyn; 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. The last year of Margaret’s life was challenging for her and her family. The family is forever indebted to the kind and caring employees of Provincial House who helped Margaret maintain her dignity and quality of life, they and Hospice of Lenawee met her needs with loving professional care. Marilyn (Finnegan) DiCarlo, age 65, of Tecumseh, passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009, in Sylvania, Ohio.  She was born Sept. 3, 1943, in Amherst, Ohio, to Robert E. and Arlene E. (Kelch) Finnegan.  She married George DiCarlo, and he survives. Marilyn was a member of St. Elizabeth Parish. She was a member of the Tecumseh Civic Center Board, the Hospice of Lenawee Board and the College Application Review Board. Along with teaching second grade, fifth grade and reading from 1968 to 1990 at Tecumseh Acres, she was a Board Member for the Tecumseh School District. She enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and was a member of the book club. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Daniel (Lisa) DiCarlo of Madison Heights; a daughter, Donna DiCarlo of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean (Edward) Wiseman of Hudson, Ohio; brother-in-law, Ronald Huggins of Louisville, Ky.; sister-in-law, Darlene Finnegan of Goodyear, Ariz.; a niece, Elizabeth Gawelek; two nephews, David Wiseman and Tom Angert; and six great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Huggins, and a brother, Charles Finnegan. The funeral liturgy for Marilyn will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church with Father Dan Wheeler as celebrant. Burial will be on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 1 p.m. at the Calvary Cemetery in Lorain, Ohio. Mary E. Newton, 79, of Addison, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Hillsdale Community Health Center in Hillsdale. She was born Feb. 20, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, to Clarke and Doris (McBean) Lathrop. Mary lived in the Manitou Beach-Addison area all her life. She graduated from Addison High School in 1948. She then graduated from Lena-Monroe County Normal in 1950. She earned her B.S. and M.A. from Eastern Michigan University in 1973. Mary taught kindergarten and second grade at Columbia Central Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Addison United Church, the Addison Senior Center and the Department on Aging Advisory Board. She was also a member of the Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the American Business Women’s Association, Acorn Chapter. Surviving are two daughters, Robin (Ted) Burdick of Somerset Center, Melissa (Norman) Hopkins of Jerome; one son, Daniel (Kim) Newton of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Christine (Josh) Stanley of Jackson, Carrie Burdick of Somerset Center, Kendra (Matt) Natter of Garden City, Timothy Hopkins of Jerome; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Reeve and Peyton Stanley, and Emily Natter. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Nadyne Marsh Auseon, 95, of Hillsdale passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009 at Drews Place Village Green in Hillsdale. She was born Jan. 29, 1914 in Hillsdale to Fay and Lottie (Foote) Marsh. She was married Oct. 22, 1933 to Dr. Charles C. Auseon and he preceded her in death in 1964. Nadyne was a 1931 graduate of Hillsdale High School and attended Hillsdale College. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority at Hillsdale College and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a former member of the Board of Women Commissioners of Hillsdale College, Hillsdale Woman’s Club, the DAR, and a life member Wenona Chapter of the order of the Eastern Star. After the death of her husband in 1964, Nadyne worked for Gelzer’s Furniture, Carriage House Gifts and the Hillsdale Daily News. She worked at the newspaper as a proof-reader for 25 years retiring at age 85. Surviving are two sons, Thomas James “Tim” (Barbara) Auseon of Hillsdale, and Dr. John Charles (Jeanie) Auseon of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Van Marsh. Memorial services for Nadyne F. Auseon will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale with the Rev. Patti Beckman officiating. Private family interment will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to VanHorn-Eagle Funeral Home. Patricia A. Bauman, 60, of LaGrange, Ind.,  joined her family in heaven on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 3, 1948, in Sturgis, the daughter of John and Mildred Jean (Parker) Cart. She and her husband Roger were married June 7, 1969 in Valentine, Ind. Her husband, parents, and her brother, Tom, preceded her in death. A graduate of Lakeland High School, LaGrange, Ind. and Adrian College, Adrian, she retired in 2008 from Lakeland High School after 34 years as a health and physical education teacher.  She also coached cross county and volleyball and was on numerous committees at Lakeland.  Pat loved her family, friends and students, and enjoyed her farm and gardens.  A life long animal lover, Pat provided a haven for many abandoned cats. She volunteered often and especially for Relay for Life and Functional Skill Relay/Special Olympics.  She was a sponsor for Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), and was a member of the Plato United Methodist Church, Lakeland Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, and National Education Association. Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis (Lisa) Cart of Jonesboro, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Steven Bauman of Simpsonville, Ky.; and nieces and nephews,  Bethany (Shawn) Miller, Amber Cart, Nathan (Joanna) Cart, Lindsay (Jeff) Turner, and Andrew Cart. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 5 p.m. at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Rev. Russell Hepler officiating. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. until service time on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, ARK Animal Rescue, and Huntington’s Chorea Disease Society of America. Roland E. ‘Ed’ Euler Jr., age 52, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, June 12, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1956 in Sturgis, a son of the late Roland E. and Mary A. (Carter) Euler. Ed had resided in Sturgis his whole life, and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1976. He had been employed by Protective Coating in Sturgis and Jayco Industries in Bristol, Ind. Ed attended the Church of the Stone in Wolcottville, Ind. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of Seaman First Class. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on his computer and had a real green thumb when it came to growing house plants. He is survived by his longtime companion, Marinda Tullos of Sturgis; four sisters, Phyllis Ann (Gary) Runyon of Cedar Springs, and Nancy Susan Lipko, Mable (Ronald) Waite and Ellen (Garnet) Waite, all of Sturgis; two brothers, Roger (Bonnie) VanAvery of Sturgis and Bruce VanAvery of Las Vegas; an aunt, Thelma Smith of Sturgis; an uncle, Homer James Carter Jr. of Sturgis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Larry Gene Carter; a sister, Lois Mary Euler; two nephews, Landon Carter and Troy VanAvery; and a niece, Brenda Lee Runyon. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Roland “Ed” Euler will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Michael Stanley of the Church of the Stone will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis, where full military rites will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. Shirley Loretta Motter, age 74, formerly of Sherwood, passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, at the home of her son Mark in Sherwood. Shirley was born Aug. 4, 1934, in Battle Creek, Mich., a daughter to the late Leonard and Zera (Hicks) Batterson. On Feb. 28, 1956, she married Lyle Motter in Angola, Ind. Shirley had lived in the Factoryville and Sherwood area most all of her life. She was a homemaker and attended the Center Park Methodist Church. Shirley enjoyed crocheting, country music, dancing, and most of all, time spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Lyle Motter of Sherwood; three children, Kandy Motter of Sherwood, Micheal Motter of Three Rivers, and Mark Motter and his wife, Kit, of Sherwood; a sister, Norma Walterspaugh of Union City; two grandchildren, Alissa and Sam Oesch; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Phillip, Lloyd, Ralph and Leonard Jr.; and three sisters, Madeline, Beverly and Deana. The family will receive relatives and friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Shirley L. Motter will be  at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Sherwood Cemetery in Sherwood. Vernie C. Kaser, 88, of Montpelier, Ohio, died late Tuesday evening, June 9, 2009, at Evergreen Manor Nursing Home in Montpelier. Born May 28, 1921, in Toledo, Ohio, to Orley and Norma (Kreft) Kaser, he is survived by his second wife, Rhea (Esterline), whom he married on June 21, 1966, in Fayette, Ohio. Vernie graduated from Deerfield High School and then entered the Merchant Marines during World War II. He retired from the Los Angeles, Calif., Parks and Recreation Department in 1984 after 22 years of employment as a supervisor. For a time Vernie owned and operated a Mobil Gas Station in Deerfield, Mich., and also worked for the Deerfield Public Schools as a school bus driver and janitor for several years. He was a former member of the Bryan Moose.  Surviving are his wife, Rhea Kaser of Montpelier; one son, Ronny (Juliene) Wise of West Unity, Ohio; three daughters Sharon (Terry) Larsen of LaHabra, Calif., Christine “Susie” Simmons of West Unity, Ohio, and Janet (Al) Arcuri of Homosassa, Fla.; one sister, Delores “Tiny” (Albert) Klauda of Hemet, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren. Vernie will be sadly missed by his family, friends and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Wilma M. (Witt) Kaser; two sons, Rodney D. Wise and David J. Kaser; two sisters, Mary Frayer and Blossom Lotte; and one brother, Howard Kaser.  Funeral services for Vernie will be 7 p.m. Friday, June 12, at the Thompson Funeral Home in Montpelier. Wanda M. Schultz, age 53, of Constantine, Mich., passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Three Rivers Hospital Emergency Room. She was born July 24, 1955, in Holmes County, Fla., a daughter to the late Clifton and Charlie Etta (Sutton) Kilpatrick and has been a Sturgis area resident most of her life. On July 10, 1999, in Constantine, Mich., she married Daniel Schultz. Wanda was a homemaker, a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Constantine, and a member of the Constantine American Legion Auxiliary.  She enjoyed sewing, arts and crafts, and spending time with her granddaughter. Surviving are her husband, Daniel; three sons, Charles David Kilpatrick of Sturgis, Mich., Steven Dale Merkle of Oklahoma and Adam Wayne Merkle of South Bordman, Mich.; a daughter, Katie Lynn Merkle of Michigan; a granddaughter, Jasmine Kilpatrick of Constantine; and three sisters, Catherine Krawiec of Louisiana, Patricia Lewis and Sandra Kilpatrick, both of Constantine, Mich. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, George Stephen Kilpatrick. A graveside service celebrating the life of Wanda M. William "Bill" Baldwin Lapeer William "Bill" Baldwin, 82, a lifetime Lapeer resident, passed away Monday (June 8, 2009). He was born April 5, 1927, in Lapeer, to Fayette P. and Catherine W. (Forystek) Baldwin. He married Dorothy June Williams on June 26, 1948 in Lapeer. Bill graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1945. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bill was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Rural Carriers Association. Bill loved his family, hunting and sports. William “Bill” T. Scott, 77 of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Coldwater died Monday, April 28, 2009, in Las Vegas. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Bob Tharp of the Church of the Nazarene officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Interment of ashes will follow at 1 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Bill was born Sept. 2, 1931 in Kentucky to Johnny and Mary Lee (Hayes) Scott. Mr. Scott sold and serviced hospital lab equipment for many years. He enjoyed wintering in Las Vegas and spending time at his cabin in Baldwin. He was an animal lover and an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Bill especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. She was born July 6, 1936, in Hillsdale County, Mich., the daughter of Ernest and Berniece (Poling) Pickford. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, W. Duane Evans; one great-grandson, Landon Truitt; three sisters, Ernestine Mercer, Kate Burns and Carol Bowersox; four brothers, Leslie Pickford, John Pickford, Butch Pickford and Sheryll Pickford; and three brothers-in-law, Robert Bumpus, George Arno and LeRoy Burns. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Tim) Truitt of Jerome; one son, Donald (Judy) Evans of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Brandon and Darren Truitt and Tiffany (Doug) Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Max and Emma Taylor; five sisters, Zelma Arno of Hillsdale, Violetta Bumpus of Jonesville, Myrtle (Robert) Longbrake of Jerome, Loretta (Paul) Sheffer of Jerome and Wanda (Terry) Warner of Jonesville; one sister-in-law, Sandy Pickford of North Adams; two brothers-in-law, Duane Mercer of Jerome and Tom Bowersox of Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Evans was a life-long resident of Hillsdale County. She graduated from the North Adams High School and retired from Jonesville Products after more than 30 years of service. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also an avid bingo player and a member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Wilma R. Evans will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home, 3380 W. Carleton Road, Hillsdale at 1 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. Yvonne Elaine “Sue” Harris passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Sue was born in Adrian on March 13, 1940, to Fay and Lila (Parker) Smith. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1958. In 1962, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in 1966.  On August 20, 1966, Sue married Maynard Harris in Detroit. Maynard, her husband of over 42 years, survives. Sue was an educator who taught in Ferndale, Farmington and Tecumseh Public Schools. At one time she was a part-time faculty member of Siena Heights University. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by three children: Christine Harris, David (Molly) Harris, and Stephen Harris, all of Adrian. She is also survived by four dearly loved granddaughters: Haley Frederick, Grace, Sarah, and Rachel Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Smith. The funeral service for Sue will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Hope Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Herter officiating. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park.
