Abraham John Jansen 1930-2009 Abraham John Jansen, 78, Bad Axe, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at his home in Bad Axe. He was born on July 27, 1930 in Leiden, The Netherlands, to the late Abraham and Anna (Stouten) Jansen. He married Maria DeGroot on October 25, 1950 in The Netherlands. Surviving are his wife Maria Jansen, Bad Axe; one son, Abraham John (Bonnie) Jansen, Keene, New Hampshire; one daughter, Marianne (David) Montgomery, London, Ontario, Canada; one brother, Izak (Gerrie) Jansen, The Netherlands; one sister, Anne (Erich) Schmidt, Germany; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In keeping with his wishes there will be no service. Cremation has taken place. Memorials may be offered to Heartland Hospice. Arrangements were handled by the Kaufman Funeral Home, Bad Axe.

Bernice Kelly 1916-2009 Bernice Kelly, 93, Madison Heights, formerly of Sebewaing, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Penny, in Madison Heights following a two-month illness. She was born March 29, 1916 in Bay City, daughter of the late Pierre and Lydia (Bellon) Garcin. She was united in marriage to Edwin (Bud) F. Kanehl on November 24, 1938. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1957. She then married Henry J. Kelly on July 7, 1962. He died on April 13, 1969. She and her husband owned and operated the Center Road Bar in Essexville before purchasing Bud's Bar in Kilmanagh, changing the name to Bernie's and finally to Kelly's Bar. She operated it until it closed on April 28, 2001. Bernice was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Sebewaing. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting the casino, bowling, visiting with her friends and family, especially the people that came to see her at Kelly's Bar. Surviving are two daughters, Candy (Robert) Oeschger, Port Hope and Penny Howard, Madison Heights; five grandchildren, Tracey (Jim) Schenk, Bad Axe, Tara Oeschger, East Lansing, Tyler Oeschger, Port Hope, Erin (Jeff) Ferris, Madison Heights and Leigh (Jessy) Wayna, Ferndale; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and one niece, Joanne (Ray) Niezurawski, Bay City. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Sebewaing. Fr. John Weis officiated with burial in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. The family has requested memorial donations be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Arrangements were made by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing.

Charles Wayne Saunders, 70, of Austin, Texas, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009, at Christopher House Hospice, Austin, Texas. He was born in Sturgis Mich., April 9, 1939, to the late Beatrice Fackler Birdsall. After graduating from White Pigeon High School, White Pigeon, Mich., where he excelled at sports, he joined the Armed Forces in 1958 and faithfully served his country for 26 years until he retired in 1984.  His tours of duty included Viet Nam, Thailand, Guam, and many others around the world. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Charles and Rosa Saunders, White Pigeon, Mich.; and his five children, Charles Saunders, Pflugerville, Texas; Cindy Jackson, San Antonio, Texas; Brian Saunders, currently deployed in Iraq; Vernon Saunders, Huntsville, Ala.; Katrina Stahl, Stafford, Va.; and his 22 grandchildren.  He is also survived by his ex-wife and friend Nancy Vogel, San Antonio, Texas, and his siblings, Timothy Saunders, Danny Saunders, and Tami Salisbury, all of White Pigeon, Mich.; and Janet Enders, Pottsville, Pa. Funeral services with military honors will be held at 11:45 Friday, June 5, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the www.strokeassociation.org He was loved and will be missed.

Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, daughter of the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years, moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Wash. and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter-in-law Diana Lundgren and a sister, Marie Alexander. The family will greet friends at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. Douglas Mater officiating. Dennis James was born March 22, 1953, in Highland Park, the son of Peter and Lois Weingartz. He grew up in Imlay City and was a graduate of Imlay City High School, class of 1971. He moved to the Ovid area in 1985. He was a shop foreman group leader at Universal Handling, a metal stamping and fabrication company. Dennis had been employed at Cramer Furniture in Imlay City, Don's Modernization in Imlay City and Carl Andress Grocery Store in Metamora. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Imlay City. Donald Dean Shultis, age 81, of Onsted passed away Thursday morning, June 4, 2009, at his home. He was born Sept. 3, 1927, in Cambridge Township, the son of Lester and Anah (Louden) Shultis. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict and married the former Lizzie L. Gray on Aug. 17, 1964. She survives. Don was employed by the Tecumseh Products Co. for 46 years and also enjoyed farming, NASCAR, electronics, TV repair, computers and was an amateur ham operator (W080) and also worked on alternators and starters. Surviving, besides his wife, Lizzie, are four sons, Donald (Diane) Shultis of Adrian, Gerald (Debbie) Shultis of Clinton, Richard (Karen) Shultis of Clinton and Larry (Lani) Shultis of Ypsilanti; by a daughter-in-law, Ivonna Shultis of Lansing; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Alfreda (Norman) Robin of Missouri and Georgiana (Tim) Sprunger of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Rosalind Shultis; a son, Daniel Shultis; and by a grandson, Scott Charles Shultis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Onsted with Pastor Margery Host officiating. EVANS A. JUHL ESSEXVILLE Evans A. Juhl, age 89, of Essexville, passed away May 24, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sandusky, Michigan on November 8, 1919 to the late Anthony and Hattie (Genshaw) Juhl. Evans was a devoted husband and family man. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and held a private pilot's license, flying for many years. During World War II, he stayed home to help with the family farm while his brother went into the Army. He retired from Consumers Power Company and had also been a bus driver. Evans was a great story teller and was joking right up to the end. He was a member of the Christian Assembly Church, Bay City Lodge No. 88, B.P.O.E. and Joppa Lodge No. 315 F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Mary Boiteau, four children; Lynn Juhl, Barb (Jack) Flood, Janis (Bob) Vermeesch and Randy (Yvonne) Juhl, seven grandchildren; Alicia (Justin) Roe, Elizabeth (Locke) Hutson, Jennifer (Mark) Griffin, Kelly Ricketts, Jody(Rick) Kuch, Amber (Chris) Cuatt and Melissa (fianc e, Derek Meinser) Juhl, seven and a half great-grandchildren, as well as a brother; Warren (Phyllis) Juhl. Edward Herman, 87, of Morenci went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 4, 2009. He was born on Nov. 29, 1921, in Dowagiac, Mich., the son of Edd and Elise (Froehlick) Herman. He married Audrie M. Hilton on March 2, 1968, at her parents home near Morenci, and she survives. Ed was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Morenci where he served on the council for many years. In 1944, he was discharged with honorable mentions from the U.S. Navy. In 1945, Ed joined the Benton Harbor Fire Department. He owned and operated Herman’s Auto Repair in Melburg, Mich., with his uncle Sam Herman for many years. Ed worked for the Berrien Co. Farm Bureau Oil Co. in Eau Claire, Mich. He moved to Lenawee County in 1953 and managed Lenawee Farm Bureau Oil in Madison Center. In 1974, he was a housekeeping manager at the University of Toledo, retiring in 1984. Ed had real estate licenses in Ohio and Michigan. He owned and operated The Morenci Shoe Cobbler for three years. Ed’s final retirement was in 2006, from Wal-Mart in Wauseon, Ohio, where he was a greeter. Ed loved meeting people and truly missed all his friends at Wal-Mart. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and taking care of his lawn. Besides his wife, Audrie, Ed is survived by three daughters, Jill (Kim) Dabe of Mason, Ohio, Judy (Bob) Milholland of Reno, Nev., and Dawn (Ken) Wenzinger of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Ervin (Bobbie) Herman of Jackson, Wis.; four sisters, Loretta Walters of St. Joe, Mich., Elosie Scheffler of Coloma, Mich., Margaret (Les) Bernard of Stuart, Fla., and Joyce (Norm) Strunk of Tavares, Fla.; sister-in-law, Wanetta Herman; five grandchildren, Brett (Rachel) Dabe of Liberty Twp., Ohio, Heather (Mike) Shingleton of Hendersonville, Tenn., Philip, Dena and Anna Wenzinger of Columbus, Ohio; two stepgrandchildren, Eva (Wyatt) Campos of Sparks, Nev., and Robert Milholland of California; seven great-grandchildren, Faith, Kailyn, Lexi and Ryan Dabe, and Ben, Nate and Alli Shingleton; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Cali and Christopher; and many nieces and nephews. She was born Oct. 31, 1920 in Allen to William J. and Maude (Welch) Watkins and graduated from Allen High School. Elizabeth received degrees from Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan Universities and taught in the rural and Jonesville Community Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Jonesville Education Association, Pythian Sisters, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Allen Red Hat Society and the Eight and Forty Club. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling in the United States and other countries, including China, Australia, Japan, England and Ireland. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening and oil painting. She is survived by grandchildren Chad (Kerri) Purcell of Allen, Christa Ernsberger of Indiana, Todd (Marcee) Purcell of Big Rapids and Stephanie (Tim) Lowrey of Plainfield, Ill., brother Victor Watkins of Allen, seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two husbands (Dale Bennett and Thurman Boyd), two sons (Jerry and Michael Purcell) and brother William R. Watkins. He was born in Van Buren Township Dec. 15, 1923, to William and Margaret (Osborn) Glaser. Mr. Glaser was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II. He was employed by Allied in Hillsdale for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the NRA and the Hillsdale American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid pilot. He is survived by four grandchildren, Adam (Amy) Glaser, Holly (Rob) Ribbons, Aaron and Jacob Glaser; five great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Bosma; one brother, Charles Glaser and one sister, Ruth Miles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth K. Glaser; his parents and his son, Larry Glaser. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Celebration Community Church (1260 W. Sherman, Muskegon, MI 49441) with the Rev. Greg Stamm officiating. Military honors will be performed under the auspices of the Muskegon County Council. Eunice S. Ziegel

Eunice S. Ziegel, 87, of Fort Myers, Fla. died peacefully after a long illness on April 28, 2009. She was born in Lowpoint, Ill. Dec. 7, 1921. After graduating from Lowpoint High School, she married Clarence "Bud" Ziegel who preceded her in death. She and her late husband were the co-founders of Hillsdale Pump and Supply. After retiring from the business, they settled in Fort Myers where Eunice resided for 30 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Z. Peterson (C. Eric) of Chuluota, Fla; son, Rod (Gail) of Hillsdale; two grandsons, Peter A. and Kurt A. Ziegel, both of Chicago and her friend and companion Martin L. Rowe Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service was held at the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial services in Hillsdale are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Araba Temple Children's Transportation Fund, 2010 Hanson St. Fort Myers, FL 33901. The Araba Temple provides transportation for children to receive care at various Shriners Children's Hospitals. Eunice enthusiastically supported this endeavor, which provides assistance to children with injuries, burns and other disabilities.


 


 

Francis 'Papa Bear Ed' Lovejoy

Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, 71, of Northwest Township, in Williams County, Ohio, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Lovejoy was a 1955 graduate of Edgerton High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Francis was part of the honor guard for President Eisenhower’s second inauguration parade and for one of Queen Elizabeth’s visits. He also traveled to Panama and the Suez Canal during his time in the Army. “Papa Bear Ed” was a lover of animals and shared a passion for the business he operated with his wife, Lovejoy’s Halfway House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. He worked for 44 years and nine months as a laborer at Hayes Albion in Bryan, Ohio. Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Bryan Ohio, the son of William Francis and Opal (Strup) Lovejoy. He married Ruth Marie Sexton on June 13, 1961, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she survives. Mr. Lovejoy is also survived by one daughter, Tina McCrea, of Bryan, Ohio; one son, Bill (Cindy) Lovejoy, of Montpelier, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert Arthur Kissinger III, Amber Opal Kissinger (Matthew) Farnham, Benjamin Ayre Hills, Bowen Jacob Hills, Krista Nicole McCrea, Holly Danielle McCrea, Matthew Link Meyer, and Dustin Ray Meyer; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Matthew Farnham, Copper Lewis Farnham and Aiden Matthew Terrill and his mother-in-law, Ester Sexton. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Tammy Marie Hills, on Nov. 13, 2006. Visitation will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in Krill Funeral Home 114 East Hull St., Edgerton, Ohio. Services for Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Tracey Hammond of Olde York Church, Non-Denominational, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Edgerton, Ohio, with graveside military rites conducted by John D. Smith Post #10 of the Edgerton American Legion. Memorials in the name of Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy may be given to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of donor’s choice. She was born Jan. 20, 1947, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late Richard and Katheryn (Egelson) Gravit. For over 20 years she had lived in El Paso, Texas, returning to Sturgis in 2006. Her early life was spent in the South Bend, Ind., area. She graduated from South Bend Central High School. On Nov. 4, 1994, she married Douglas Blake in El Paso, Texas. He died in May 2001. She is survived by three daughters, Karen Johnson of Sturgis, Mary Ann Hardesty of Las Cruces, N.M., and Christina Dawn Blake of El Paso, Texas; one son,  Michael Douglas Hardesty of El Paso, Texas; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three brothers, Bob Gravit of Sturgis, Gary Gravit of Cassopolis and Rand Gravit of Goshen, Ind.; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; three brothers, Larry, Ed and Jeffery Gravit; and a sister, Judith Gravit. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Jane Blake will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Christian Fellowship Church, 300 Timothy St., Sturgis. Karen was a true sports enthusiast. Shopping and gift giving were among her special interests, especially at Christmas time. She was born January 17, 1911, in Phillipsburg, Kan., to Samuel and Emma (Hall) Matteson. She married J. George Whitten. Mrs. Whitten was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church since 1950 and was a devout Christian who loved the Lord. She had her Masters in Education from Eastern and taught in Kansas originally, then in a Lapeer area country school, ending her career at the E.E. Irwin Elementary after 35 years. Margery loved to travel, known to be ready to leave in ten minutes. She enjoyed playing Scrabble and reading - always with a book in her hand. She adored her grandchildren. Mary taught kindergarten and second grade at Columbia Central Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Addison United Church, the Addison Senior Center and the Department on Aging Advisory Board. She was also a member of the Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the American Business Women’s Association, Acorn Chapter. Surviving are two daughters, Robin (Ted) Burdick of Somerset Center, Melissa (Norman) Hopkins of Jerome; one son, Daniel (Kim) Newton of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Christine (Josh) Stanley of Jackson, Carrie Burdick of Somerset Center, Kendra (Matt) Natter of Garden City, Timothy Hopkins of Jerome; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Reeve and Peyton Stanley, and Emily Natter. Baker, 86, formerly of Ney, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Fostoria, Ohio.  Mrs. Baker was born April 15, 1923, in Defiance County, Ohio, the daughter of John and Ruby Laura (Lentz) Kleinhen.   She married Edgar L. Baker in Bryan on Dec. 5, 1942, and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1983.  Mrs. Baker was a cashier at the former Farmer High Schools  (currently Fairview High School) and a billing clerk for the Ney Water Department.  She was a member of the Ney United Methodist Church, where she was past president of the Ladies Group.  Mary also was a volunteer at the Community Hospital and Wellness Center-Bryan. Mrs. Baker is survived by her son, Terry L. (Jean) Baker of Fostoria, Ohio; three daughters, Bonnie (Bert) Freeman of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Catherine (Tom) Pryslak of Sherwood and  Marlena “Lennie” (James) Kirsch of Sturgis, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; three half-sisters, Janice (Webb) Crocker of Bryan, Joyce (George) Bair of Dunnellon, Fla., and Joan Studebaker of Hicksville.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar; a daughter, Beth Johnson; two brothers, Robert and Harold Kleinhen; and two sisters, Hazel Moog and Marvel Clinker. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. The funeral Mass was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008 at the St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners. The Rev. Stephen Fillion, pastor of the St. Pancratius Catholic Church in Cass City, officiated. Burial was made in the church cemetery., Arrangements were handled by the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly.

Michael E. Miller, age 50, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne, Ind. He was born Nov. 25, 1958, in Sturgis, a son of Lewis and Ruby (Troyer) Miller, and had been a resident of St. Joseph County all of his life. On Nov. 30, 1984, he married Darlene Gerber in Fairview. Mike had been involved with construction all of his life and was a general contractor and owner/operator of Mike E. Miller Construction.         He was a member of Grace Christian Fellowship and enjoyed spending time with his family. Surviving are his wife, Darlene; six children, Carissa Miller of Sturgis, Mich., Bryant Miller of Three Rivers, Mich., Adam Miller, Caleb Miller, Sveta Miller, and Dasha Miller, all of Sturgis, Mich.; his parents, Lewis and Ruby Miller of Sturgis; five brothers and sisters, Jim (Patty) Miller of Colon, Kevin (Joy) Miller of Burr Oak, Mich., JoAnn (Mike) Krick of Sturgis, Mich., Trudy (Jim) Zook of Lake Odessa, and Karen (Rick) Prell of Colon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Elijah Miller. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Michael E. Miller will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Grace Christian Fellowship, 300 Timothy Drive, Sturgis, with the Rev. Ross Gerber officiating. Nadine L. Mobley, age 90, of Adrian died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Provincial House in Adrian. She was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Tecumseh to James and Lillian (Austin) Marsh. She was married to Ralph Mobley on June 6, 1943.  He preceded her in death in August 1946. Nadine had been a resident of Tecumseh until 1943, when she moved to Adrian. She had worked at Bixby Hospital, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Adrian Church of God and attended Bethany Assembly of God. Nadine wintered in Lakeland, Fla., and loved baseball. Nadine is survived by two nephews, Lee and Kirk, and one niece, Mary Jo, and their spouses; dear friends and neighbors, Jack and Barbara Bearden and family. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a brother, Clarence Marsh; and two sisters, Joyce Gordon and Bertha Creger.  Funeral services for Nadine will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian, with Pastor David King officiating. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Gardens, Tecumseh. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Noah A. Miller, age 75, of Colon, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at the Laurels of Coldwater after a short illness. Noah was born March 9, 1934, in LaGrange, Ind., a son of the late Amos N. and Bessie (Beechum) Miller. Noah had lived in Colon the past 21 years, coming from Sturgis. He had worked as a truck driver for Grate Trucking in LaGrange and later had worked for Mystic Grove Apartments in Colon as a maintenance man. Noah was a member of the LaGrange American Legion Post #215 and of the Chicago Teamsters Union Local #145, he had also served in the U.S. Army National Guard, and had attended the Colon United Methodist Church. He is survived by his life partner, Vicky Kirkum of Colon;  three children, Candace (Manny) Cabrera of Houston, Texas, Mary Martinez of Goshen, Ind., and Dawn Miller of Goshen, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Ray (Louanne) Miller of Colon, Roger (Carolyn) Miller of LaGrange, Roy (Mary) Miller of Texas and Andy Miller of Bradenton, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Jane (William) Warble of LaGrange, Sue Kensinger of LaGrange and Sue Miller; many nieces and nephews; and extended family Steve (Georgia) Dobberteen of Colon, Gretcheina (Toby) Myers, Scott (Debbie) Dobberteen and Melvin (Tiara) Dobberteen. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patti Jo Miller;  a grandson,  Christopher Miller; and a brother, William Miller. There will be no visitations. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating the life of Noah A. Miller will be  at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Schipper Funeral Home in Colon, with Mr. Melvin Dobberteen officiating. He was born October 29, 1911 in Worth Township, son of the late Alfred and Anna (Fockler) Sherman. He and Elizabeth L. Wellman were married March 23, 1935 in Lexington. She died January 22, 2001. Orliff was a retired Worth Township farmer and Chrysler Corporation employee. Surviving are two sons, Ova (Rosa) of Lexington and Delmar (Nancy) of Port Huron; two daughters, Onnellee Harneck of Croswell and Marjorie Marshall of Chesterfield, twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Hardy; son-in- laws, Eldon Marshall and Robert Harneck; two brothers, Carlton and Wesley Sherman. Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away June 1, 2009, at the age of 85. She was born May 25, 1924 in Waldron, the sixth child of nine, to Frederick M. and Sara (Black) Boyd. She married John H. Peebles from Hudson on Feb. 10, 1944 and moved with him to Southern California in 1945. Pat attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a history degree from California State University at Los Angeles after her children were grown. Pat played catcher for the Steel Products softball team after high school. She was involved with the PTA, Girl Scouts, the March of Dimes and little league while her son and daughter were growing up. She was also very involved with civic affairs and ran for the Temple City School Board. Pat was a voracious reader and worked in the public library and the travel business. She opened her own travel agency in 1977. Pat loved to travel and did so extensively to better advise her clients. She always went out of her way to make their trips the best they could be. In 2007, Pat and John moved to Northern California to be near their daughter and her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Pat is survived by her husband, John Peebles; son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City, Calif.; daughter, Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael, Calif.; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Adams Jacobson, James Adams; great- grandson Wes Peebles; sisters, Mildred Cotter of Oxford, Ohio, Blake Shilling of West Unity, Ohio, and Betsy Jones of Hillsdale; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A Mass of Christian burial for Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Father Ioane Sigarara officiating. Raymond C. Turner, age 101, passed away Monday morning, June 1, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug, 23, 1907, in Bristol, Ind., a son of the late Raymond and Katherine (Leatherman) Turner. Raymond was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1926. On Dec. 8, 1939, he married Retha Bender in South Bend, Ind. She died Aug. 12, 2004. Following more than 15 years of dedicated employment, he retired from Ross Laboratories in Sturgis. Prior to joining Ross Laboratories he had been employed by the Sturgis Journal for 18 years. After his retirement he worked at the Sturgis Public Library for 10 years. He attended the First Baptist Church in Sturgis and was a member of AARP and Swinging Seniors. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds and gardening. He is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann (Allen) Wisler of Howe, Ind., and Jill (Gregory) Peck of Sturgis; one son, Allan (Virginia) Turner of Sagamore Beach, Mass.; six grandchildren, Nathan (Jodi) Wisler of Howe, Ind., Aaron (Dawn) Wisler of Shipshewana, Ind., Deann (Larry) Jennings of Traverse City, Stephanie (Marc) Giampa of New Hampshire, Jeffrey Turner of Hawaii and Benjamin Turner of Sagamore, Mass.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and four brothers: Byron, Myron, Carl and Guy Turner. Ronald W. Bedford 1956-2009 Ronald William Bedford, 53, Ubly, formerly of Caseville, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. He was born in Pigeon on April 14, 1956, son of Walter Howard and the late Elinor Margaret (Rathje) Bedford. Ronald was stricken with a sudden illness when he was 1 1/2 years old, and throughout the years he was loved, cherished and cared for by his parents and numerous caregivers. Most recently, he was a resident at Genesis and Hurford Acres in Ubly. He enjoyed playing ball and games with his caregivers, and loved visiting with his family and friends, whom he liked to tease. He had a joyous laugh and a "hoot & holler." He would enjoy listening to music for hours, especially his father's recordings. Interment will follow on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Ft. Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Steven was born on Sept. 10, 1946 in Coldwater to William H. and Ramona C. Sweet. He married Marcia Forbes in 1970, they had a daughter together, Martia and later divorced in 1986. He married Carole (Cushman) Wehrs on Feb. 14, 2009. He was a veteran of the Vietnam era serving with the United States Navy. He was a detective for Con Rail, retiring after many years of service. In earlier years, he served in Branch County and the Sturgis area in law enforcement. Steven spent the majority of his life in Branch County and graduated from Coldwater, Class of 1965. He had recently attended the Church of the Holy Spirit. Steven was a member of the Amateur Radio Club, Branch County Storm Watch, the Shadow Riders Motorcycle Club and was a founding member of the Patriot Guard Riders. He also enjoyed lapidary work, metal detecting and scuba diving. Steven dedicated his life to serving others. Steven is survived by his wife, Carole Williams, daughter, Martia (Patrick) Stevens of Ramstein AFB, Germany, brothers Dan (Korina) Lopez of Traverse City and Virgil Lopez of Coldwater, sisters Louise (Stan) Kopelow of Tarzana, Calif., Gayle Delyi of Greenwood, S.C. and Cindy (Jim) King of Coldwater, his mother, Ramona Lopez of Coldwater, grandchildren, Jonathon and Samuel Stevens of Germany. Mrs. Mead was a store manager of the Indianwood Junction, Clarkston, for over 25 years. Thelma was the president of the Sand Hill Estates walking club - she was the motivation for walking. She is survived by her children, Dawn (Kerry) Crosier of Attica, David (Linda) Chittick of Oregon and Debbie Chittick of Lake Orion; grandchildren, Nathan, Robert, Joseph, April, Bryce and Justin; great-granddaughter, Maddie. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Caroline Leopard. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Services, Davison. Cremation has taken place. Theresa M. Messing 1912-2009 Theresa M. Messing, 96, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at her home with hospice care. She was born on November 14, 1912 in Detroit, daughter of the late August and Barbara (Nowiski) Romzek. Theresa and Leonard Messing were united in marriage on June 22, 1935 in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. Together they farmed in Sigel Township and raised their family. Leonard preceded her in death on December 11, 2007. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella of Bad Axe, the Altar Society of OLLH and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed sewing and quilting for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards. Theresa was a 4-H leader for many years and a member of the Sigel Extension Group. Surviving are her seven children, Shirley (John) Hoffman, Oscoda, Patricia (Clarence) Heleski, Ubly, Russell (Elizabeth) Messing, Mead, Wash., Calvin (Sharon) Messing, Manchester, Dale (Diane) Messing, Taylor, Texas, Bruce (Jeanne) Messing, Nebo, NC and Bradley (Julie) Messing, Manchester; 39 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and three brothers, Ray (Delores) Braun, Port Austin, Orville (Pat) Braun, Harbor Beach and Kenneth Braun, Harbor Beach for a total of 113 living descendants. She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Messing Jr.; a grandson, Benjamin Messing; two sisters, Agnes Romzek and Minni Romzek Susalla; seven brothers, Pete Romzek, Ralph Braun, Roman Braun, Tony Braun, Harry Braun, Wilfred Braun and Norman Braun and a brother-in-law, James Shubitowski. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach. Fr. Bill Spencer will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 3 from 1-5 and 7-9 in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Inc., Harbor Beach. Visitation on Thursday will begin in the church at 10 a.m. until time of services. A Parish Vigil Service will take place Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home and a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach.

Walter C. Roemer 1915-2009 Walter C. Roemer, 93, Sebewaing, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon, following a six week illness. He was born on November 6, 1915 in Sebewaing, son of the late William and Margaret (Mayer) Roemer. He was united in marriage to Ruth M. Dressler on February 1, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2006. Walt had been a farmer in the Sebewaing area for many years. He also had been employed at Michigan Sugar Company for 50 campaign seasons. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Surviving are two daughters, Carol (Jack) Poppy, Unionville and Janet (Ken) Rink, Sebewaing; one grandson, Todd Poppy, Brighton; one great-grandson, Jarrett and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers; infant Rudolph, John, Herbert and Edwin Roemer; three sisters, infant Esther Roemer, Meta Stauffer and Frieda Finkbeiner. Funeral service was held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Rev. Michael Boyer officiated with burial in Silverlawn Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Immanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements were handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Sebewaing.

Walter F. Morr, 69, of Camden, died Friday, May 29 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born March 3, 1940 in Waldron, to Hobart F. and Florence E. (Miller) Morr. Walter graduated from Waldron High School in 1958. He then received his business degree from Jackson Community College in Jackson. Walter served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Marines. Walter was employed at various businesses in the area. He had a great love for traveling, flea markets, hunting and fishing. Surviving are a son, Dennis Florentine of Angola, Ind; four daughters, Patricia A. Morr of Angola, Ind., Peggy (Carl) Rupp of Montpelier, Ohio, Pam (Bill) Bailey of Arab, Ala. and Phyllis A. Sowers of Ashville, Ohio; three brothers, Dale (Joan) Morr of Pioneer, Ohio, LeRoy (Nora) Morr of Waldron, and Charles (Rhoda) Morr of Elyria, Ohio; one sister, Janet Geraghty of Merseyside, England; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Wayne Morr and one sister Mary Kosier. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pioneer Nazarene Church in Pioneer with Pastor Wayne Sweely to officiate. Walton D. "Josh" Brown 1926-2009 Walton D. "Josh" Brown, 83, passed away Tuesday morning, May 26, 2009 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe following a three-year illness. He was born on April 22, 1926 in Detroit, son of the late Orville and Marie (Barnes) Brown. He was united in marriage to Marion A. Schweitzer on April 30, 1949 in Linkville. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2001. Walton had been a cash crop and dairy farmer on their centennial farm in Brookfield Twp. for many years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. He was a member and past president of the Owendale Lions Club, served as Brookfield Twp. Supervisor from 1969 to 2000 and was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Army in the military police in the Philippines during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and especially enjoyed "crop checking around the area". Surviving are one daughter, Beth Brown, Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Kim (Cynthia) Brown, Columbiaville and Lee (Suzanne) Brown, Prescott; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Mardella Volz, Sebewaing and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Rev. Allen R. Stoll officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Sebewaing. Memorials may be offered to St. John Lutheran Church or the Owendale Lions Club.
