Benjamin Vincent Armes Columbiaville Benjamin Vincent Armes, 20, of Columbiaville passed away Wednesday (June 10, 2009) as a result of injuries from a motorcycle accident. He was born July 26, 1988, in Flint, the son of Darrell and Tracy (Rossman) Armes. Ben grew up in Columbiaville and graduated from Lapeer West in 2007. He was working as a clerk at Fick's Market in Columbiaville for the past 3 years and at Billiards Specialists in Columbiaville. Ben enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on motorcycles and cars. Bernard W. Clark, 81, of Camden, formerly of Pioneer, Ohio, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, in the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born in Woodbridge Township, the son of Olen and Florence (Lapham) Clark. Barney retired as a life-long Woodbridge Township farmer. Also, one time he worked for Miller Brother Construction Company out of Archbold, Ohio. For a number of years prior to Miller Brothers, he drove a gas truck for Watkins Oil Company, Hillsdale. He was a former Pioneer fire fighter. Barney was a veteran of the Army in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis; sister in law, Fiossie M. Wohlford of Pioneer. He is preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will held 2 p.m. Monday at Floral Grove in Pioneer with Pastor Don Gentry. No visitation will be held. Betty Louise Spahr, age 83, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Friday evening June 12, 2009, at her home. She was born March 21, 1926, in Van Wert, Ohio, a daughter to the late Elmer and Florence Hazel (Melchi) Potter. Betty had resided in Sturgis since 1977 coming from Hillsdale, Mich. On April 7, 1946, she married Charles Spahr in Van Wert, Ohio. He died Nov. 23, 1973. Betty was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and had done housekeeping for several business executives in the Hillsdale area. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Osseo and truly enjoyed raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Laura Childers of Hillsdale, Darlene Swihart of Sturgis and Kitty (Ernie) Miller of Elkhart, Ind.; three sons, Charles (Linda) Spahr of Cypress, Texas, Anthony (Jeanne) Spahr of Sturgis and Jeffery (Judy) Spahr of Houston, Texas; 32 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia (Harold) Boyd of Urbana, Ohio and Katie Louth of Van Wert, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Polly Hersha and Vicky Carpenter; two sisters; two brothers; and two grandsons. Carol Masters, 65, of Hudson and formerly of Waldron, passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009, at her home. She was born Feb. 28, 1944, in Bryan, Ohio to Rex and Grace (Sommers) Rininger. She was married Oct. 20, 1962, to Richard Masters and he preceded her in death in 1998. Carol was a member of the First Church of Christ, Waldron. She was a member of the Waldron Pythian Sisters Temple 74, serving as Michigan Grand Chief in 1995. Carol was a board member of the Waldron District Library. She worked as a secretary at Dana Corporation in the early 1970s. She had recently worked as a cook at Madden House for the Dominican Sisters in Adrian, retiring in 2008. Carol enjoyed family gatherings with her nieces and nephews, cooking for others and volunteering for various activities in the Waldron area. Survivors include three sons, Stanley (Alysia) Masters of Blissfield, Steven (Angela) Masters of Waldron and Michael (Jennifer) Masters of Hillsdale; 10 grandchildren: Alexis, Fletcher, Ethan, Elizabeth, Madeline, Aubrey, Elayna, Gabriel, Lincoln and Maverick; siblings, Deane (Kelly) Rininger of Standarsville, Va, Leroy (Betty) Rininger of Camden and Belinda (Chick) Campanella of Williams, Ariz. Clifford R. “Cliff” Dick, age 71, of Mendon, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 11, 2009, near Paradise, Mich., from injuries received in an ATV accident.  He was born in Lenawee County, Mich., on Jan. 29, 1938, the son of the late L. Evart and Mary (Killinger) Dick.  The family moved to Mendon in 1940 where Cliff attended Mendon High School.  He then served in the U.S. Navy and then returned to Mendon where he worked for the Haas Corporation, later known as Lear Plastics, until his retirement.  Cliff was a very active member of the UAW Local 503 where he served as president for many years.  He was a loyal Mendon football fan and never missed a game.  He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time at his cabin in the U.P.  Cliff was a handyman who designed and built many furniture items for his children and grandchildren.  Cliff is survived by four children and their spouses, Joan and Dan Gibson of Newark, NJ, David E. and Edna Dick of Centreville, Diane and Chuck Zinsmaster of Mendon, and Dawn and Ryan Braysher of Kalamazoo;  eight grandchildren, Jordan Gibson (Dani), Danielle Gibson,  Matt, Ashley, and Megan Zinsmaster, Andrew Chupp, Brandon and Logan Braysher, and David Dick II; one great-grandchild, Lorelie Gibson;  two sisters, Joan Stiteler (Eugene) of Mendon and Faye Bohm (Ronald) of Centreville; several nieces and nephews; and his fiancé, Janice Keene of Three Rivers.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home of Mendon.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the funeral home.  Military interment will be in Mendon Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to a charity of one’s choice..  Online register is available and condolences may be sent to www.eickhofffuneralhome.com.   |

Dana Steven Horvath Sr., age 63, of White Pigeon, Mich., and formerly of South Bend, Ind., passed away Sunday, June 14, 2009, at his home when he lost his valiant fight with cancer. Dan was born in South Bend on March 3, 1946, a son of the late Steven J. and LaRayne A. (King ) Horvath. Dan graduated from Washington High School in South Bend and served in the U.S. Marines. He worked in the food industry for more than 40 years, serving as a regional manager at Clark Food Service in South Bend and previously  for O’Dells and Burger Chef Restaurants. Dan loved NASCAR, M.I.S. and Dale Earnhardt. He was a fantastic father, brother, uncle and friend to all. Surviving are his former wife, Judith Hutchinson of Three Mile Bay, N.Y.; sons Robert S. Horvath and Dana S. Horvath Jr. of White Pigeon; grandchildren Zoe, Xavier and Joel Remmo; sister Judith Cauffman of Mishawaka, Ind.; twin brother Donald S. (Barbara) Horvath of Granger, Ind.; and nephews James Cauffman and Jeffrey Cauffman of South Bend, Marc Horvath of Granger and Joseph Horvath of South Bend. Dan has donated his body to the University of Michigan Medical School for cancer research. A celebration of Dan’s life will be held at a later date. Helen M. (George) Ross, age 99, formerly of Bronson, died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Holland Hospital in Holland. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, June 17, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Bronson, with Rev. Fr. Richard Fritz officiating. Interment will follow at Fry Cemetery. Visitation for Helen will be held on Tuesday, June 16, from 4-8 p.m., with the Rosary to be recited at 7 p.m., at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. Helen was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Findlay, Ohio, to Henry and Mary (Koehler) Buck. She married Oscar "Jimmy" George in 1934. He preceded her in death in 1968. She then married Marion Ross on July 28, 1973 in Coldwater. Mrs. Ross was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She spent most of her life in the Bronson area and attended St. Charles and St. Mary's Churches. She was a member of St. Mary's Alter Rosary Society and was a former member of the Ladies Guild at St. Mary of the Lakes Church in Eustis, Fla., where she and her husband wintered for many years. In Florida, she was a member of the Kitchen Band and had served as a Girl Scout Leader in earlier years. Helen enjoyed cooking, needlework and ceramics, but most of all she enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren and taking care of the needs of others. Helen is survived by her husband, Marion; her daughters, Rosalie (Roger) Yesh of Richmond, Ind., Jolayne (Gene) Taylor of Quincy; her step-children Maurice Ross of Atwater, Calif., Larry (Rosie) Ross of South Bend, Ind., Ann and Larry Ratkowski of Hamilton and Mary Ellen Weinberg of Buchanan; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son Norman George and 11 brothers and sisters. Memorials may be directed to the American Lung Association or St. Mary's Church. Helen Marie Frye, age 74, of Centreville, Mich., passed away  Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Three Rivers Health. She was born in Sturgis on June 23, 1934, a daughter of  Clayton and Anna (Edler) Melchi. Helen graduated from Sturgis High School in 1952 where she participated in cheerleading. On June 7, 1952, she married Wellington Frye in Sturgis. He preceded her in death in 1984. She worked as a waitress at E&K Restaurant in Centreville and previously at Rosie’s, Lowry’s, Sportsman's and Wesley’s restaurants. Helen loved to play bingo and work in her flower garden. She also enjoyed traveling, especially  to her cabin, Mexico and Las Vegas. Surviving are her daughters, Dianna (Richard) Gregory of Three Rivers and Debbie Graber of Constantine; sons Donald Frye of Centreville and Daniel Frye of Nottawa; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law Elwood Gest and Richard (Theresa) Fry; and sister-in-law Marie Frye. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Chester and Eugene Melchi and sister Edith Gest. Relatives and friends will be received from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Eley Funeral Home in Centreville, where religious services will be held  at 11 a.m. Thursday. Jean Freeland Imlay City Jean Freeland, 87, of Imlay City, passed away at home after an extended illness Wednesday (June 10, 2009). Jean Mary Bingman was born November 9, 1921 in Wilmington, Del., the daughter of Fred and Cora Bingman. She grew up in Lathrup Village, Mich. She had lived in Imlay City since the 1980's. Prior to that, she lived in Grand Rapids and Florida. Jean married John Leslie Walters in 1948. He passed away in 1972. She married her second husband, Melvin Freeland, in the 1970's. He passed away in the 80's. Jean served her country in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. She had attended Imlay City United Methodist Church and Imlay City First Congregational United Church of Christ. She had been employed as a receptionist at McCreay Heating and Cooling in the Troy and Southfield offices. Jean was a dancer in off-Broadway musicals and toured the country. On June 8, 2009, Kristy (Center) Emmons, of Litchfield, passed away peacefully in her sleep following a short, courageous battle with cancer. Kristy was the beloved wife of Rick Emmons and mother of Dom, Rickey, Jared, and Justin, her youngest son, who remained steadfastly by her side and took care of her during her final illness. She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanine Center of Ann Arbor and Maurine Mullikin of Parma, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.   Kristy was the daughter of Wayne and Jean Center, of Litchfield, who preceded her in death. Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Community Health Center of Branch County and CHC Hospice for their kind care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. Lou Wanda was employed at the Ubly Community School since 1981 in the cafeteria and custodian of maintenance. Louis F. Beloungea, 76, of Warren, Mich., and Cross Village passed away June 12, 2009, at Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs. Louis was born in Petoskey, Mich., on Sept. 13, 1932, to Louis and Frances (Scibior) Beloungea. He grew up in Cross Village and attended school there. At a young age he left Cross Village and traveled around the country and worked at various jobs. He was inducted into the U.S. Army and served for two and a half years during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge he moved to Warren, Mich., where he was self-employed as a machinery broker. He also had owned several bars and restaurants in Warren. |

Maria Aurelia Camacho, age 77, of Adrian went to be with The Lord, June 13, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center. She was surrounded by loving family, friends and the wonderful caregivers at Bixby Medical Center. Mrs. Camacho was born Feb. 25, 1932, in Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico, the son of Rafael and Elvira (Sanchez) Vallejo. On Aug. 13, 1952, she married Aurelio V. Camacho. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Camacho lived in Adrian since 1955. She owned and operated Camacho Tortillas until 1976. She also owned several restaurants in the area such as The Hideaway, La Monita, and had part ownership of Taco Hut. Maria was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 20 years. She is survived by her two sons, Sergio (Stephanie O’Connor) Camacho and Adam (Johnna Raymond) Camacho, both of Adrian; six grandchildren, Magan, Jon-Eric, Nicholas, Jasmine, BreAnne and Kaya. She is also survived by many other loving family members, friends and church family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rafael and Elvira Vallejo; husband, Aurelio; and siblings, Manuel Vallejo, Elvira Rodriguez and Guadalupe Vallejo. Maria was a loving and caring wife, proud mother, grandmother, loving aunt and wonderful friend to all. She leaves us with fond memories and will be forever in our thoughts. Mary lived her early life in the Pittsburgh area. She lived in Pinellas Park, Fla., and then the Manitou Beach area. She liked to play bridge and enjoyed sewing, reading and her blue Cadillac. She was a member of St. Mary On The Lake Catholic Church. Surviving are one son, Raymond N. (Janet) McGrath of Manitou Beach; two daughters, Shirley (Ron) Kelley of Denver, Colo., Patricia (John) Klausner of Kansas City, Kan.; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Mary Stoll, 60, went to be with her Lord, Saturday, June 13, 2009 after an eight-month fight with Leukemia. She was at home surrounded by both family and friends. Mary was born Jan. 22, 1949 in Washington, Ind. to David L. and Edith (Raber) Stoll of Jerome, who survive her. Mary is also survived by her loving husband of 40 years, the Rev. Donald Eugene Stoll; one daughter, Pamela Sue Stoll of Jerome; one son, Brian Eugene and Rebecca June Stoll of Jonesville; three beautiful grandchildren, Timothy Andrew Stoll (8 years old), Grace Rebecca Stoll (5 years old) and Jonathon David Stoll (2 years old); three brothers, Abraham and Rosemary Stoll of North Adams, Levi D. and Sondra Stoll of Jerome,  and David, Jr. and Lois Ann Stoll of Jonesville; six in-law families, John D. and Barbara Stoll, Zetta and Joe Lengacher, Delbert and Dorothy Stoll, Howard and Mary Stoll, Ruby and Paul Miller and Mary (Chuck) Stoll; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Stoll.            Mary gave her heart to Jesus as a young woman. She served along side her loving husband in the ministry for over 24 years. They served with Gospel Echoes Team Prison Ministry as part of the Family Ministry Team of Goshen, Indiana, Midland Mennonite Church, Midland, Michigan, Perryton Mennonite Church, Perryton, Texas and in many Prison Crusades with Gospel Express Evangelistic Team in South Carolina and Florida.            Mary was a member of Sunrise Chapel Mennonite Church in Harlan, Ind., and she spent much of her time in prayer for the family she loved and for anyone who would ask. Many people would stop her and Don on the street and ask them to pray for them, which she did, on the spot.       Mary was a cook and many would say a chef. She always shared her wonderful gift with everyone by baking pies, bread, cinnamon rolls, donuts and making candy for everyone at Christmas time. She never brought guests to the table and sent them away hungry. Many people were blessed at her table.         Mary will be missed by her family and friends. Now she is with the Lord singing in His beautiful choir in Heaven. Mary would have wanted everyone to remember her happy and smiling and sharing the love of Jesus Christ our Savior.         “My Jesus, My Savior, I know Thou art mine.”     A funeral service to honor the life of Mary Stoll will be held at the Bird Lake Wesleyan Missionary Church, (7228 S. Phillip was born Sept. 14, 1939, in Bronson, a son to the late John and Edna (Yesh) Rakocy. He grew up in Bronson graduating from Bronson High School with the Class of 1957. Phillip had worked as a barber for 50 years and also had worked at Dock Foundry in Three Rivers for 27 years retiring in 2001. Phillip served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Colon American Legion Post #454. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife, Rose Rakocy; daughter, Rose (Larry) Bontrager; son Jeff (Kathy) Rakocy; three grandchildren, Gary and Eric Bontrager and Zachary Darmofal, all of Colon; sister, Carol (Bob) Edwards of Coldwater; two brothers, Kenneth (Nancy) Rakocy of Arizona and Alan (Clair) Rakocy of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Schipper Funeral Home LTD. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Phillip F. Rakocy will be Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the funeral home with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery, with military honors conferred by the Colon American Legion assisted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard. If desired the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Phillip to the Colon American Legion Post #454. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.   |

Robert E. Kolassa, age 85, of Coldwater, formerly of Bronson, died Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2009 at Drew’s Place of Coldwater. He had been in failing health. Bob was born July 1, 1923 in Bronson, son of Edward H. B. and Eleanor Barbara (Horkey) Kolassa and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. He married Doris L. Guzy on Feb. 20, 1943 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Bronson. Doris died Sept. 23, 1988. He then married Marie Brumm in 1994 in Naples, Fla. Marie died in 2005. He retired in 1985 as Controller of Bronson Specialties Company, where he had worked for many years. He also worked as accountant over the years at the former Bronson Reel Company and at the former Ray Roussey Construction Company. An active member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, Bob was the first Layman to be ordained as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.  He had also served as Lector and was a member of the Choir. He served as Sergeant in the US Air Force during World War II, and was the oldest living member of the Bronson American Legion Post 259. He was proud of his Polish heritage and proud that he called Bronson his home. He was one of the organizers of the first Bronson Polish Festival  and was crowned King of the Bronson Polish Festival in 1986. Bob truly loved his family and win or lose, he was a diehard Notre Dame Fan. He was also a former member of the Bronson School Board and a former member of the Bronson Rotary Club and the B.P.O.E. in Naples, Fla.  Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Randy Hollister of Bronson; his daughter Sharon Kolassa and her fiancé Don Schoch of Bronson; his sons and daughters-in-law Robert E. and Ronda Kolassa, Jr, of Bronson and Kevin and Gayle Kolassa, also of Bronson; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law Morris and Inez Kolassa of Bronson and his sister-in-law, Pearl Ann Guzy of Coldwater. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Catherine Kupiecki. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson, with Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Post of the American Legion. Prayers before Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2-8 p.m. on Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial donations are suggested to the Bronson American Legion or to In House Hospice in Kalamzoo. |

Robert “Bubby” Barnett, Sr., age 69, of Battle Creek, formerly of Adrian (Wildcat Ridge), passed away June 13, 2009, in Nashville, Tenn. He was born Nov. 30, 1939, in Salyersville, Ky., the son of Noah and Helen (Jordan) Barnett. On Sept. 22, 1962, he married Joan Baumeu. She survives. In addition to his wife, Joan, he is survived by his children, Robin (David) Robarge, Robert Barnett, Jr. and Pauline (John) Parshall; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Willard Barnett, Wilbur Barnett and Harold Barnett; three sisters, Lucy (Junior) Holiday, Phyllis (Lester) Monday and Sue (Junebug) Robinson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Ruth Fox; and two sisters, Mabel Shepherd and Bethel McKenzie. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at J. He was born September 1, 1937, in Royal Oak, the son of the late Hazen and Minnie (Robinson) London. He married Blanche Wedlake on November 2, 1957 in Imlay City. William "Bill" Baldwin Lapeer William "Bill" Baldwin, 82, a lifetime Lapeer resident, passed away Monday (June 8, 2009). He was born April 5, 1927, in Lapeer, to Fayette P. and Catherine W. (Forystek) Baldwin. He married Dorothy June Williams on June 26, 1948 in Lapeer. Bill graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1945. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bill was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Rural Carriers Association. Bill loved his family, hunting and sports. Yvonne Elaine “Sue” Harris passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Sue was born in Adrian on March 13, 1940, to Fay and Lila (Parker) Smith. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1958. In 1962, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in 1966.  On August 20, 1966, Sue married Maynard Harris in Detroit. Maynard, her husband of over 42 years, survives. Sue was an educator who taught in Ferndale, Farmington, and Tecumseh Public Schools. At one time she was a part-time faculty member of Siena Heights University. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by three children: Christine Harris, David (Molly) Harris, and Stephen Harris, all of Adrian. She is also survived by four dearly loved granddaughters: Haley Frederick, Grace, Sarah, and Rachel Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Smith. The funeral service for Sue will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Hope Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Herter officiating. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park. Friends may visit the family at Wagley Funeral Home on Sunday and Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. You may send condolences to the family at www.wagleyfuneralhome.com.
