Your Views: Charge for rescue run means tough new choices

Thursday, June 25, 2009 1:37 AM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

To the editor, I had a recent experience where I needed an ambulance to transport my husband to the hospital. Upon calling 9-1-1, Woodbridge First Responders came and shortly Reading Emergency Unit ambulance arrived. My husband was cared for and transported to the hospital. To our surprise I received a bill from Woodbridge Township for their first response. I was unaware there was a charge for this service and furthermore, I was not offered an option if I wanted first responders or not. Since receiving the bill, I asked some questions as to what this money was for and found there were no real clear answers. My understanding is the medical first responders are not paid. I understand fuel and equipment use, however, I do not feel the $100 fee charged justifies this expense. I also understand that Reading Emergency Unit, prior to the charging, replaced all the used disposable equipment and oxygen to help out the townships at no cost. Now that Woodbridge charges, replacement is no longer an option, due to kickback laws and the charges are now expected to cover the cost of equipment. I support the Woodbridge Fire Department and Medical First Responders. What I don’t understand is where the money is actually going and why weren’t residents notified of this charge? Now I will start to make choices the next time I dial for an ambulance and ask myself, “Do I need medical first responders or will I wait that few extra minutes for the ambulance?” One more worrisome choice I will need to make. Eunice Guy, Camden
