Bernice Kelly 1916-2009 Bernice Kelly, 93, Madison Heights, formerly of Sebewaing, passed away Friday, May 29, 2009 at the home of her daughter, Penny, in Madison Heights following a two-month illness. She was born March 29, 1916 in Bay City, daughter of the late Pierre and Lydia (Bellon) Garcin. She was united in marriage to Edwin (Bud) F. Kanehl on November 24, 1938. He preceded her in death on January 7, 1957. She then married Henry J. Kelly on July 7, 1962. He died on April 13, 1969. She and her husband owned and operated the Center Road Bar in Essexville before purchasing Bud's Bar in Kilmanagh, changing the name to Bernie's and finally to Kelly's Bar. She operated it until it closed on April 28, 2001. Bernice was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, Sebewaing. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting the casino, bowling, visiting with her friends and family, especially the people that came to see her at Kelly's Bar. Surviving are two daughters, Candy (Robert) Oeschger, Port Hope and Penny Howard, Madison Heights; five grandchildren, Tracey (Jim) Schenk, Bad Axe, Tara Oeschger, East Lansing, Tyler Oeschger, Port Hope, Erin (Jeff) Ferris, Madison Heights and Leigh (Jessy) Wayna, Ferndale; three great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren and one niece, Joanne (Ray) Niezurawski, Bay City. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Sebewaing. Fr. John Weis officiated with burial in St. Agatha Catholic Church, Gagetown. The family has requested memorial donations be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Arrangements were made by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home in Sebewaing.

Constance Baur Lundgren 1924-2009 Constance "Connie" Baur Lundgren, 84, Bay Port, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon. She was born in Bay Port on December 4, 1924, daughter of the late Bertrand N. and Alberta A. (Howell) Baur. She was a 1943 graduate of Bay Port High School. She received a B.S. Degree in 1948 from Michigan State University. She was united in marriage to Lars C. Lundgren in Bay Port on October 31, 1953. He preceded her in death in 1994. Connie worked a year for Dow Chemical following her high school graduation. She also worked as a lab tech at St. John's Hospital in Detroit, as well as at hospitals in California. She lived in Woodland Hills, California for 30 years, moving back to Michigan in 1990. She was an active member of the Bay Port Historical Society. She loved watching local high school sports, watching games on television and listening to them on the radio. She was a member of the Bay Port United Methodist Church. She is survived by two sons, Mark (Maria) Lundgren, Ellensburg, Wash. and Barry Lundgren, Atascadero, Calif.; two grandsons, Benjamin and Daniel; a sister, Pauline Kelly, Bay Port; four brothers, James Baur, Bay Port, Roger (Sheila) Baur, San Antonio, Texas, David (Bernice) Baur, Lansing and Douglas Joe (Char) Baur, Bay Port and Texas and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Michael; a daughter-in-law Diana Lundgren and a sister, Marie Alexander. The family will greet friends at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, 2009 at the Bay Port United Methodist Church. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with Rev. Douglas Mater officiating. Memorials may be made to the Bay Port United Methodist Church or the Bay Port Historical Society. Arrangements are being handled by the Meyersieck-Bussema Funeral Home, Pigeon.

Dennis James was born March 22, 1953, in Highland Park, the son of Peter and Lois Weingartz. He grew up in Imlay City and was a graduate of Imlay City High School, class of 1971. He moved to the Ovid area in 1985. He was a shop foreman group leader at Universal Handling, a metal stamping and fabrication company. Dennis had been employed at Cramer Furniture in Imlay City, Don's Modernization in Imlay City and Carl Andress Grocery Store in Metamora. He was a former member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Imlay City. Douglas Eugene “Pops” Dickson, 74, of Milan, Mich., beloved father and grandfather, died on June 4, 2009. Douglas died peacefully at Herrick Medical Center in Tecumseh, Mich., after a courageous battle with cancer. He  was surrounded by family and close friends. Douglas was born on Jan. 2, 1935, in Sylvia, Tenn., to William and  Mabel Dickson. Douglas grew up in Wayne, Mich. He had a long and enjoyable career with the Ypsilanti Regional Psychiatric Hospital where he worked as a Food service supervisor from 1951-1988. Douglas was a member of the Milan Moose Lodge for 10 years. Douglas also enjoyed spending time playing softball and had received a trophy for pitcher of the year. He also enjoyed mushroom hunting with his friends, Jerry Zinker, Ron Desbrough and Ron Dingman. Douglas is survived by his good friend and ex-spouse Sharon Dickson; daughters, Deborah (Tim) Unold, Diane (Rodney) Schroeder, Dawn Spack (Dave Hessler); four grandchildren, Toni, David, Kristina and James, and three great-grandchildren. He had many other dear friends, including Matt Byrd who was always there to lend him a hand. Douglas was preceded in death by his father, William Dickson. The family would like to give special thanks to April and Linda from Hospice of Lenawee for the extraordinary care given to Douglas. In lieu of flowers, the family request  donations be sent to Hospice of Lenawee in the name of Douglas Eugene Dickson.


 


 

EVANS A. JUHL ESSEXVILLE Evans A. Juhl, age 89, of Essexville, passed away May 24, 2009 at Bay Regional Medical Center. He was born in Sandusky, Michigan on November 8, 1919 to the late Anthony and Hattie (Genshaw) Juhl. Evans was a devoted husband and family man. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and held a private pilot's license, flying for many years. During World War II, he stayed home to help with the family farm while his brother went into the Army. He retired from Consumers Power Company and had also been a bus driver. Evans was a great story teller and was joking right up to the end. He was a member of the Christian Assembly Church, Bay City Lodge No. 88, B.P.O.E. and Joppa Lodge No. 315 F. & A.M. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Mary Boiteau, four children; Lynn Juhl, Barb (Jack) Flood, Janis (Bob) Vermeesch and Randy (Yvonne) Juhl, seven grandchildren; Alicia (Justin) Roe, Elizabeth (Locke) Hutson, Jennifer (Mark) Griffin, Kelly Ricketts, Jody(Rick) Kuch, Amber (Chris) Cuatt and Melissa (fianc e, Derek Meinser) Juhl, seven and a half great-grandchildren, as well as a brother; Warren (Phyllis) Juhl. Funeral and committal services were held at the Christian Assembly Church in Bay City with Pastor John C. Wellhousen officiating. Burial was in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Edna Allison Hodge

Edna Allison Hodge, age 94, of Manitou Beach, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2009, at her daughter’s home. She was born Oct. 23, 1914, in Hawkeye, Iowa, to William and Anna (Filter) Weitenhagen. At the age of 5, she moved to Adrian, Mich., with her family and spent the rest of her life in Lenawee County. She graduated from Adrian High School in 1932.  She married Edwin Allison of Tecumseh on Oct. 3, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1964. She married Edward Hodge of Morenci on Aug. 22, 1968, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 29, 1981. Edna was employed at American Chain & Cable and retired in 1975 after 35 years of service. She was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Adrian and belonged to the Ladies Aid, L.W.M.L. and Wednesday morning Bible Class. Edna enjoyed reading, crocheting, embroidering and watching game shows and sports on TV.  She enjoyed her family the most and loved going to all the family get-togethers. She is survived by two daughters, Linda (Lawrence) Armstrong of Adrian and Janet (Frank) Stevenson of Manitou Beach, with whom she had been residing. She is also survived by a brother, Bill Weitenhagen of Adrian; two sisters, Phyllis (Willis) Sipes of Adrian and Frances (James ) Hubbard of Onsted; four grandchildren, Kelly Armstrong, Brett (Diana) Stevenson of Goodrich, Valerie Stevenson and Jolene (Jon) Bowles, both of Adrian; eight great-grandchildren, Ben and Lacey Creger, Brock and Chase Cheesbro, Christian and Matthew Stevenson, and Noah and Parker Bowles; one great-great-grandson, Gabriel Creger; a brother-in-law, A.L. (Denise) Hodge of Glendale, Ariz.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Edna was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; twin daughters at birth; one grandson, Michael Allison; two sisters, Fern Krueger and Hazel Weitenhagen; and a sister-in-law, Mary Alice Weitenhagen. Funeral services for Edna will be held Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with Pastor Paul Herter officiating. Burial will be in Lenawee Hills Memorial Park, Adrian. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, Adrian. Visitation will also be held on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of service at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Elizabeth J. Boyd, 88, of Allen, passed away Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at Drews Place of Coldwater. She was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Allen to William J. and Maude (Welch) Watkins and graduated from Allen High School. Elizabeth received degrees from Western Michigan and Eastern Michigan universities and taught in the rural and Jonesville Community Schools. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Jonesville Education Association, Pythian Sisters, American Legion Auxiliary, Eastern Star, Allen Red Hat Society and the Eight & Forty Club. Elizabeth enjoyed traveling in the United States and other countries, including China, Australia, Japan, England and Ireland. She also enjoyed sewing, gardening and oil painting. She is survived by four grandchildren, Chad (Kerri) Purcell of Allen, Christa Ernsberger of Indiana,  Todd (Marcee) Purcell of Big Rapids, Stephanie (Tim) Lowrey of Plainfield, Ill.; one brother, Victor Watkins of Allen; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Dale Bennett and Thurman Boyd; two sons, Jerry and Michael Purcell; and one brother, William R. Watkins. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the George White Funeral Home, Quincy, with Pastor Craig Pahl officiating. Interment will follow in Allen Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 11 a.m. Saturday until time of service. Memorials are suggested to the Allen United Methodist Church.

Mr. Eugene L. Glaser, age 85, Muskegon, formerly of Hillsdale, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2009, in Muskegon. He was born in Van Buren Township Dec. 15, 1923, to William and Margaret (Osborn) Glaser. Mr. Glaser was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II. He was employed by Allied in Hillsdale for many years before his retirement. He was a member of the NRA and the Hillsdale American Legion. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid pilot. He is survived by four grandchildren, Adam (Amy) Glaser, Holly (Rob) Ribbons, Aaron and Jacob Glaser; five great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Nancy Bosma; one brother, Charles Glaser and one sister, Ruth Miles. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth K. Glaser; his parents and his son, Larry Glaser. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Monday at Celebration Community Church (1260 W. Sherman, Muskegon, MI 49441) with the Rev. Greg Stamm officiating. Military honors will be performed under the auspices of the Muskegon County Council. Eunice S. Ziegel, 87, of Fort Myers, Fla. died peacefully after a long illness on April 28, 2009. She was born in Lowpoint, Ill. Dec. 7, 1921. After graduating from Lowpoint High School, she married Clarence "Bud" Ziegel who preceded her in death. She and her late husband were the co-founders of Hillsdale Pump and Supply. After retiring from the business, they settled in Fort Myers where Eunice resided for 30 years. She is survived by a daughter, Janice Z. Peterson (C. Eric) of Chuluota, Fla; son, Rod (Gail) of Hillsdale; two grandsons, Peter A. and Kurt A. Ziegel, both of Chicago and her friend and companion Martin L. Rowe Jr. of Fort Myers, Fla. A memorial service was held at the Fort Myers Congregational United Church of Christ. Memorial services in Hillsdale are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Araba Temple Children's Transportation Fund, 2010 Hanson St. Fort Myers, FL 33901. The Araba Temple provides transportation for children to receive care at various Shriners Children's Hospitals. Eunice enthusiastically supported this endeavor, which provides assistance to children with injuries, burns and other disabilities.

Francis 'Papa Bear Ed' Lovejoy

Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, 71, of Northwest Township, in Williams County, Ohio, died Thursday, June 4, 2009, in his home after a brief illness. Mr. Lovejoy was a 1955 graduate of Edgerton High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. Francis was part of the honor guard for President Eisenhower’s second inauguration parade and for one of Queen Elizabeth’s visits. He also traveled to Panama and the Suez Canal during his time in the Army. “Papa Bear Ed” was a lover of animals and shared a passion for the business he operated with his wife, Lovejoy’s Halfway House Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, Inc. He worked for 44 years and nine months as a laborer at Hayes Albion in Bryan, Ohio. Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy was born Dec. 13, 1937, in Bryan Ohio, the son of William Francis and Opal (Strup) Lovejoy. He married Ruth Marie Sexton on June 13, 1961, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she survives. Mr. Lovejoy is also survived by one daughter, Tina McCrea, of Bryan, Ohio; one son, Bill (Cindy) Lovejoy, of Montpelier, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Robert Arthur Kissinger III, Amber Opal Kissinger (Matthew) Farnham, Benjamin Ayre Hills, Bowen Jacob Hills, Krista Nicole McCrea, Holly Danielle McCrea, Matthew Link Meyer, and Dustin Ray Meyer; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Matthew Farnham, Copper Lewis Farnham and Aiden Matthew Terrill and his mother-in-law, Ester Sexton. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Tammy Marie Hills, on Nov. 13, 2006. Visitation will be held 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in Krill Funeral Home 114 East Hull St., Edgerton, Ohio. Services for Francis “Papa Bear Ed” Lovejoy, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Tracey Hammond of Olde York Church, Non-Denominational, officiating. Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Edgerton, Ohio, with graveside military rites conducted by John D. Smith Post #10 of the Edgerton American Legion. On  June 16, 1950, she married Harry Junior Ware in Constantine. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 2008. Freda enjoyed camping and spending time at Gun Lake as well as gardening and canning. Gertrude Mary Blaskie, age 84, of Bronson, Mich., died early Monday morning, June 8, 2009, at the home of her sister Genevieve in Burr Oak where she had been staying due to her illness. Gertrude was born March 25, 1925, in Sherwood, a daughter of Peter and Julia (Francisco) Blaskie and a lifelong area resident. She graduated from Bronson High School in 1944, a few weeks after beginning her first job at the former Peoples State Bank of Bronson. Gertrude started as the assistant bookkeeper and assumed the position of bookkeeper within a year or so. Then in 1947, she became the assistant cashier. Through the early years, she also filled in as teller when needed. In about 1960, Gertrude’s job changed to entirely a desk job without teller functions. The Peoples State Bank merged with First National Bank of Quincy in 1969. Within a few years, this became First National Bank of South Central Michigan. Then in 1980, the bank merged with First of America, based in Kalamazoo.  Through it all, Gertrude remained a “constant” at the bank... a familiar smiling face and a helpful, gracious manner for all customers. At the time of her retirement on June 30, 1989, after a 45-year career, Gertrude was the bank’s customer service representative, handling new accounts, purchases of certificates of deposit and many other customer related functions. Gertrude was an active member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson where she served on several committees over the years, and she was a member of the Sacred Heart Society. She was a long-time member, treasurer and past president of the American Business Women’s Association and had served for several years on the Board of Directors of the former Bronson Community Chest.  She was honored as Polish Festival Queen in 1984. She enjoyed reading, sewing and gardening in her spare time. Surviving are her brothers, Theodore Blaskie of Seattle, Wash., Raymond Blaskie of Florida and Leon Blaskie of San Angelo, Texas; her sisters, Genevieve Cadman and Theresa Grossman, both of Burr Oak, and Angeline Tierney of Elkhart, Ind.; and numerous nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery, Sturgis. Prayers before Mass will be recited at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from  2-4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. Wednesday, where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.  Memorial donations are suggested to St. Mary Church or to the Bronson Food Pantry.

Joan J. Harmon, 79 of Sturgis, Mich., passed away June 6, 2009, at the Heartland Health Care Center in Kalamazoo, Mich. She was born June 30, 1929, in Sturgis, Mich., a daughter to the late Freddie F. and Cora (Nihart) Messner. Joan had resided in the Sturgis and White Pigeon area all of her life. On Sept. 10, 1949, she married Edward A. Harmon at the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Sturgis. He died Jan. 17, 2003. Following 13 years of employment with the Ameritrust National Bank in Sturgis, she retired in 1990. She had also been employed by the Kirsch Company, Wade Electric and General Fire Proofing, all in Sturgis. Joan was a member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson. She enjoyed working with stained glass, cross stitch, crocheting and watching NASCAR. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Giavonni) Iannotti of Sterling Heights, and Krystal Schwartz of Gobles; five sons, David (Monique) Harmon of Sacramento, Calif., Mark (Ranah) Harmon of Elkhart, Ind., Keith (Debbie) Harmon of Columbus, Ind., Dale (Rebecca) Harmon of Galesburg and Timothy Harmon of Paw Paw; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Donna) Messner of Sturgis; one sister, Julie Brandt of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; one grandson, Justin Harmon; and one sister, Mary Schram, preceded her in death. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place. Since 1993, worked for the Macomb Oakland Regional Center as the Director of both the Corporate Compliance and Intact Respite Services. She loved her job and her co-workers. Karen was a true sports enthusiast. Shopping and gift giving were among her special interests, especially at Christmas time. (Davis) Bradley.  On March 3, 1956, she married Harold J. Kline in Angola, Ind. He preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1992. She graduated from Mendon High School Adult Education in 1983.  Margie had made her home in rural Burr Oak for the past 57 years.  She had worked for the former Kirsch Company in Sturgis and was also a homemaker where she helped with the growing, preparing, preserving and selling of produce. She was a member of the Colon American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Sturgis Eagles.  She is survived by three daughters, Marjorie Jean (Michael) Whitcomb of Sherwood, Sharon Decker of Colon and Tammy Jo (Jody) Fredenburg of Mendon; one son, Dean D. (Betsy) Kline of Burr Oak; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry L. Bradley of Westland; and several nieces and nephews.   Margie was preceded in death by five brothers, Dale, William, Glenn, Donald and Herbert Bradley; and two sisters, Lula and Lillian Bradley.   The family will receive relatives and friends 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Schipper Funeral Home Ltd. in Colon. Funeral services celebrating the life of Marjorie J. Kline will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with Mr. David J. Farrell officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Three Rivers. If desired, the family suggest memorials be made in memory of Marjorie to the Colon American Legion Auxiliary or Fairview Living Centre. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

She was born Feb. 20, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio, to Clarke and Doris (McBean) Lathrop. Mary lived in the Manitou Beach-Addison area all her life. She graduated from Addison High School in 1948. She then graduated from Lena-Monroe County Normal in 1950. She earned her B.S. and M.A. from Eastern Michigan University in 1973. Mary taught kindergarten and second grade at Columbia Central Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Addison United Church, the Addison Senior Center and the Department on Aging Advisory Board. She was also a member of the Michigan Education Association, National Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and the American Business Women’s Association, Acorn Chapter. Surviving are two daughters, Robin (Ted) Burdick of Somerset Center, Melissa (Norman) Hopkins of Jerome; one son, Daniel (Kim) Newton of Canton, Ohio; grandchildren, Christine (Josh) Stanley of Jackson, Carrie Burdick of Somerset Center, Kendra (Matt) Natter of Garden City, Timothy Hopkins of Jerome; great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Reeve and Peyton Stanley, and Emily Natter. Baker, 86, formerly of Ney, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Fostoria, Ohio.  Mrs. Baker was born April 15, 1923, in Defiance County, Ohio, the daughter of John and Ruby Laura (Lentz) Kleinhen.   She married Edgar L. Baker in Bryan on Dec. 5, 1942, and he preceded her in death on April 29, 1983.  Mrs. Baker was a cashier at the former Farmer High Schools  (currently Fairview High School) and a billing clerk for the Ney Water Department.  She was a member of the Ney United Methodist Church, where she was past president of the Ladies Group.  Mary also was a volunteer at the Community Hospital and Wellness Center-Bryan. Mrs. Baker is survived by her son, Terry L. (Jean) Baker of Fostoria, Ohio; three daughters, Bonnie (Bert) Freeman of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Catherine (Tom) Pryslak of Sherwood and  Marlena “Lennie” (James) Kirsch of Sturgis, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren; three half-sisters, Janice (Webb) Crocker of Bryan, Joyce (George) Bair of Dunnellon, Fla., and Joan Studebaker of Hicksville.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edgar; a daughter, Beth Johnson; two brothers, Robert and Harold Kleinhen; and two sisters, Hazel Moog and Marvel Clinker. Mrs. Mary Sarna, 87, of Westover, Md. and formerly of Bad Axe, passed away Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 under hospice care with her daughters at her side., Mary was born March 22, 1921 in Detroit, daughter of the late John and Rose Pleciak., She married Frank Sarna Aug. 2, 1941 at. St. Cunegunda's in Detroit. He preceded her in death May 7, 1992., Mary lived in Bad Axe from 1986 to 2000 when she moved to Westover, Md. She was a former parishioner of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Sheridan Corners where she was an active member of the Christian Mothers and organized the annual fall craft show. She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Surviving are his wife, Darlene; six children, Carissa Miller of Sturgis, Mich., Bryant Miller of Three Rivers, Mich., Adam Miller, Caleb Miller, Sveta Miller, and Dasha Miller, all of Sturgis, Mich.; his parents, Lewis and Ruby Miller of Sturgis; five brothers and sisters, Jim (Patty) Miller of Colon, Kevin (Joy) Miller of Burr Oak, Mich., JoAnn (Mike) Krick of Sturgis, Mich., Trudy (Jim) Zook of Lake Odessa, and Karen (Rick) Prell of Colon; and many nieces and nephews. He was born October 29, 1911 in Worth Township, son of the late Alfred and Anna (Fockler) Sherman. He and Elizabeth L. Wellman were married March 23, 1935 in Lexington. She died January 22, 2001. Orliff was a retired Worth Township farmer and Chrysler Corporation employee. Surviving are two sons, Ova (Rosa) of Lexington and Delmar (Nancy) of Port Huron; two daughters, Onnellee Harneck of Croswell and Marjorie Marshall of Chesterfield, twelve grandchildren, twenty-seven great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Hardy; son-in- laws, Eldon Marshall and Robert Harneck; two brothers, Carlton and Wesley Sherman. Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles, of San Rafael, Calif., passed away June 1, 2009, at the age of 85. She was born May 25, 1924 in Waldron, the sixth child of nine, to Frederick M. and Sara (Black) Boyd. She married John H. Peebles from Hudson on Feb. 10, 1944 and moved with him to Southern California in 1945. Pat attended Western Michigan University and graduated with a history degree from California State University at Los Angeles after her children were grown. Pat played catcher for the Steel Products softball team after high school. She was involved with the PTA, Girl Scouts, the March of Dimes and little league while her son and daughter were growing up. She was also very involved with civic affairs and ran for the Temple City School Board. Pat was a voracious reader and worked in the public library and the travel business. She opened her own travel agency in 1977. Pat loved to travel and did so extensively to better advise her clients. She always went out of her way to make their trips the best they could be. In 2007, Pat and John moved to Northern California to be near their daughter and her family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Pat is survived by her husband, John Peebles; son, Frederick (Vivian) Peebles of Temple City, Calif.; daughter, Mary (James) Adams of San Rafael, Calif.; grandchildren, Whitney Peebles, Julie Adams Jacobson, James Adams; great- grandson Wes Peebles; sisters, Mildred Cotter of Oxford, Ohio, Blake Shilling of West Unity, Ohio, and Betsy Jones of Hillsdale; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. A Mass of Christian burial for Patricia Jane Boyd Peebles will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hillsdale with Father Ioane Sigarara officiating. Ronald W. Bedford 1956-2009 Ronald William Bedford, 53, Ubly, formerly of Caseville, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at Huron Medical Center, Bad Axe. He was born in Pigeon on April 14, 1956, son of Walter Howard and the late Elinor Margaret (Rathje) Bedford. Ronald was stricken with a sudden illness when he was 1 1/2 years old, and throughout the years he was loved, cherished and cared for by his parents and numerous caregivers. Most recently, he was a resident at Genesis and Hurford Acres in Ubly. He enjoyed playing ball and games with his caregivers, and loved visiting with his family and friends, whom he liked to tease. He had a joyous laugh and a "hoot & holler." He would enjoy listening to music for hours, especially his father's recordings. Thelma I. Mead Attica Thelma I. Mead, 72, of Attica (of Gingellville, Mich.) passed away Tuesday (June 2, 2009). She was born February 19, 1937, in Gingellville, to Frank and Doris (Hyde) Will. Mrs. Mead was a store manager of the Indianwood Junction, Clarkston, for over 25 years. Thelma was the president of the Sand Hill Estates walking club - she was the motivation for walking. She is survived by her children, Dawn (Kerry) Crosier of Attica, David (Linda) Chittick of Oregon and Debbie Chittick of Lake Orion; grandchildren, Nathan, Robert, Joseph, April, Bryce and Justin; great-granddaughter, Maddie. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Caroline Leopard. Memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurse Services, Davison. Cremation has taken place. Theresa M. Messing 1912-2009 Theresa M. Messing, 96, Harbor Beach, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2009 at her home with hospice care. She was born on November 14, 1912 in Detroit, daughter of the late August and Barbara (Nowiski) Romzek. Theresa and Leonard Messing were united in marriage on June 22, 1935 in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Helena. Together they farmed in Sigel Township and raised their family. Leonard preceded her in death on December 11, 2007. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church in Harbor Beach. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella of Bad Axe, the Altar Society of OLLH and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed sewing and quilting for all her grandchildren and great grandchildren and enjoyed playing cards. Theresa was a 4-H leader for many years and a member of the Sigel Extension Group. Surviving are her seven children, Shirley (John) Hoffman, Oscoda, Patricia (Clarence) Heleski, Ubly, Russell (Elizabeth) Messing, Mead, Wash., Calvin (Sharon) Messing, Manchester, Dale (Diane) Messing, Taylor, Texas, Bruce (Jeanne) Messing, Nebo, NC and Bradley (Julie) Messing, Manchester; 39 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and three brothers, Ray (Delores) Braun, Port Austin, Orville (Pat) Braun, Harbor Beach and Kenneth Braun, Harbor Beach for a total of 113 living descendants. She was preceded in death by a son, Leonard Messing Jr.; a grandson, Benjamin Messing; two sisters, Agnes Romzek and Minni Romzek Susalla; seven brothers, Pete Romzek, Ralph Braun, Roman Braun, Tony Braun, Harry Braun, Wilfred Braun and Norman Braun and a brother-in-law, James Shubitowski. Funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Our Lady of Lake Huron Catholic Church, Harbor Beach. Fr. Bill Spencer will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 3 from 1-5 and 7-9 in the Ramsey Funeral Home, Inc., Harbor Beach. Visitation on Thursday will begin in the church at 10 a.m. until time of services. A Parish Vigil Service will take place Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home and a Daughters of Isabella Rosary at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by the Ramsey Funeral Home in Harbor Beach.

Tricia Ann Minear Schroyer, age 44, passed away on Thursday, May 21, after a brief and unexpected illness. She was originally from Angola, N.Y. and was a resident of Freeport, Fla. She is survived by her husband Donald Schroyer; mother and step-father Judith and Bill Paterson; grandmother Elizabeth Emerson (all of Freeport, Fla.); brother Scott Minear (Marcie) of Birmingham, Ala.; uncles Joel Emerson (Kathy) of Batavia, N.Y. and Russ Emerson (Sue) of Angola, N.Y.; aunt Linda DeGroat (Drew) of Freeport, Fla., and loving pets — dog Jax and cats Dottie, Nutmeg, Moose and Pixie.  Tricia was an animal lover, an avid knitter, an accomplished seamstress, a talented musician and enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactment groups. Her bright wit, brilliant mind and loving soul will be missed by all who knew her.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Tricia’s memory to Alaqua Animal Refuge in Freeport, Fla. Emerald Coast Funeral Home of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. was in charge of services.

Vernell Odom, 76, of Constantine, Mich., died June 6, 2009 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo following a two-week illness. She was born Feb. 3, 1933 in Jasper, Ala., a daughter of Louis and Willie May (Gradey)Hyche. She was a Constantine resident for 12 years, coming from White Pigeon where she lived for 20 years. She had lived in Elkhart, Ind., prior to that. On Sept. 17, 1949, she married Jack Odom in Birmingham, Ala. He died in 1965. She was a homemaker and a mother and enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Surviving are three daughters, Debbie (Ed) Dressler of White Pigeon, Mary (R.J.) Niece of Three Rivers and Benita Lammon of Port Clinton, Ohio; a son, Ronnie E. (Jan)Odum of Three Rivers; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mae Griffin, Katie Edie, both of White Pigeon, and Evelyn (Leon)Griffin of Constantine; a brother, Vernon (Sue)Hyche of White Pigeon; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Jackie Caldwell; two sons, Roger and Patrick Odom; a sister, Lilly Mae Hyche; and four brothers, Thomas, Roy, James and Jonnie Hyche. Relative and friends may call from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Farrand Funeral Home of White Pigeon where services are at 1 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. John McClimans of Three Rivers First Church of God officiating. Burial will abe in Mottville Township Cemetery, Mottville, Mich.  


 


 

Walter C. Roemer 1915-2009 Walter C. Roemer, 93, Sebewaing, passed away Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Scheurer Hospital, Pigeon, following a six week illness. He was born on November 6, 1915 in Sebewaing, son of the late William and Margaret (Mayer) Roemer. He was united in marriage to Ruth M. Dressler on February 1, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. She preceded him in death on December 1, 2006. Walt had been a farmer in the Sebewaing area for many years. He also had been employed at Michigan Sugar Company for 50 campaign seasons. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Surviving are two daughters, Carol (Jack) Poppy, Unionville and Janet (Ken) Rink, Sebewaing; one grandson, Todd Poppy, Brighton; one great-grandson, Jarrett and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers; infant Rudolph, John, Herbert and Edwin Roemer; three sisters, infant Esther Roemer, Meta Stauffer and Frieda Finkbeiner. Funeral service was held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing. Rev. Michael Boyer officiated with burial in Silverlawn Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Immanuel Lutheran Church. Arrangements were handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Sebewaing.

Walter F. Morr, 69, of Camden, died Friday, May 29 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born March 3, 1940 in Waldron, to Hobart F. and Florence E. (Miller) Morr. Walter graduated from Waldron High School in 1958. He then received his business degree from Jackson Community College in Jackson. Walter served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Marines. Walter was employed at various businesses in the area. He had a great love for traveling, flea markets, hunting and fishing. Surviving are a son, Dennis Florentine of Angola, Ind; four daughters, Patricia A. Morr of Angola, Ind., Peggy (Carl) Rupp of Montpelier, Ohio, Pam (Bill) Bailey of Arab, Ala. and Phyllis A. Sowers of Ashville, Ohio; three brothers, Dale (Joan) Morr of Pioneer, Ohio, LeRoy (Nora) Morr of Waldron, and Charles (Rhoda) Morr of Elyria, Ohio; one sister, Janet Geraghty of Merseyside, England; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother Wayne Morr and one sister Mary Kosier. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Pioneer Nazarene Church in Pioneer with Pastor Wayne Sweely to officiate. Walton D. "Josh" Brown 1926-2009 Walton D. "Josh" Brown, 83, passed away Tuesday morning, May 26, 2009 at Courtney Manor, Bad Axe following a three-year illness. He was born on April 22, 1926 in Detroit, son of the late Orville and Marie (Barnes) Brown. He was united in marriage to Marion A. Schweitzer on April 30, 1949 in Linkville. She preceded him in death on December 28, 2001. Walton had been a cash crop and dairy farmer on their centennial farm in Brookfield Twp. for many years before retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Kilmanagh. He was a member and past president of the Owendale Lions Club, served as Brookfield Twp. Supervisor from 1969 to 2000 and was a member of the Michigan Farm Bureau. He served in the U.S. Army in the military police in the Philippines during World War II. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, jigsaw puzzles and especially enjoyed "crop checking around the area". Surviving are one daughter, Beth Brown, Louisville, Ky.; two sons, Kim (Cynthia) Brown, Columbiaville and Lee (Suzanne) Brown, Prescott; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Mardella Volz, Sebewaing and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was held on Friday, May 29, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, Kilmanagh. Rev. Allen R. Stoll officiated with burial in the church cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Dinkel-Juengel Funeral Home, Sebewaing. Memorials may be offered to St. John Lutheran Church or the Owendale Lions Club.
