He was working as a clerk at Fick's Market in Columbiaville for the past 3 years and at Billiards Specialists in Columbiaville. Ben enjoyed hunting, fishing and working on motorcycles and cars. Bernard W. Clark, 81, of Camden, formerly of Pioneer, Ohio, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, in the Hillsdale Community Health Center. He was born in Woodbridge Township, the son of Olen and Florence (Lapham) Clark. Barney retired as a life-long Woodbridge Township farmer. Also, one time he worked for Miller Brother Construction Company out of Archbold, Ohio. For a number of years prior to Miller Brothers, he drove a gas truck for Watkins Oil Company, Hillsdale. He was a former Pioneer fire fighter. Barney was a veteran of the Army in World War II. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis; sister in law, Fiossie M. Wohlford of Pioneer. He is preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will held 2 p.m. Monday at Floral Grove in Pioneer with Pastor Don Gentry. No visitation will be held. Memorials are suggested to Mac McGuire Unit at the Hillsdale Community Health Center.

Betty Louise Spahr, age 83, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Friday evening June 12, 2009, at her home. She was born March 21, 1926, in Van Wert, Ohio, a daughter to the late Elmer and Florence Hazel (Melchi) Potter. Betty had resided in Sturgis since 1977 coming from Hillsdale, Mich. On April 7, 1946, she married Charles Spahr in Van Wert, Ohio. He died Nov. 23, 1973. Betty was a dedicated wife, mother and homemaker and had done housekeeping for several business executives in the Hillsdale area. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star in Osseo and truly enjoyed raising her children and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is survived by three daughters, Laura Childers of Hillsdale, Darlene Swihart of Sturgis and Kitty (Ernie) Miller of Elkhart, Ind.; three sons, Charles (Linda) Spahr of Cypress, Texas, Anthony (Jeanne) Spahr of Sturgis and Jeffery (Judy) Spahr of Houston, Texas; 32 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia (Harold) Boyd of Urbana, Ohio and Katie Louth of Van Wert, Ohio and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two daughters, Polly Hersha and Vicky Carpenter; two sisters; two brothers; and two grandsons. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. Private family services will be held at a later date. The Hackman Family Funeral Home – Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Surviving besides her husband Wayne, are children, Sheri (David) Weis of Ludington, Steven (Phyllis) Minor of Flint, Susan (Thomas) Barr of Pittsford, Dennis (Amy) Minor of Rives Junction, Janet (Michael) Phillips of Strongsville, Ohio, and David (Vonda) Minor of Pittsford; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Elston of Addison; brother, James Sweigart of Saline; and stepfather, Russell Sweigart of Pacolet, S. C. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, June 14 at the Pittsford Wesleyan Church with Pastor Douglas Plunkett officiating. Robert E. Kolassa, age 85, of Coldwater, formerly of Bronson, died Saturday afternoon, June 13, 2009 at Drew’s Place.  He had been in failing health. Bob was born July 1, 1923 in Bronson, son of Edward H. B. and Eleanor Barbara (Horkey) Kolassa and was a lifelong Bronson area resident. He married Doris L. Guzy on Feb. 20, 1943 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Bronson.  Doris died Sept. 23, 1988.  He then married Marie Brumm in 1994 in Naples, Fla.  Marie died in 2005. He retired in 1985 as controller of Bronson Specialties Company where he had worked for many years.  He also worked as accountant over the years at the former Bronson Reel Company and at the former Ray Roussey Construction Company. An active member of St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church, Bob was the first Layman to be ordained as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.  He had also served as Lector and was a member of the Choir. He served as sergeant in the US Air Force during World War II, and was the oldest living member of the Bronson American Legion Post 259. He was proud of his Polish heritage and proud that he called Bronson his home. He was one of the organizers of the first Bronson Polish Festival  and was crowned King of the Bronson Polish Festival in 1986. Bob truly loved his family and win or lose, he was a diehard Notre Dame fan. He was also a former member of the Bronson School Board and a former member of the Bronson Rotary Club and the B.P.O.E. in Naples, Fla. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Randy Hollister of Bronson; his daughter Sharon Kolassa and her fiancé Don Schoch of Bronson; his sons and daughters-in-law, Robert E. and Ronda Kolassa, Jr of Bronson and Kevin and Gayle Kolassa also of Bronson; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; his brother and sister-in-law Morris and Inez Kolassa of Bronson; and his sister-in-law, Pearl Ann Guzy of Coldwater.  He was preceded in death by his sister Mary Catherine Kupiecki. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. Mary of Assumption Catholic Church in Bronson with Rev. Fr. Richard A. Fritz officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Post of the American Legion.  Prayers before Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2 – 8 p.m. Wednesday where the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Memorial Donations are suggested to the Bronson American Legion or to In House Hospice in Kalamzoo.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Erik (Jill) Langthorne of Houston, Texas, and Mark Langthorne of New Orleans, La.; one step-son, Paul Cox of Ann Arbor; two sisters, Liane (Michael) Palmertree of San Francisco, Calif., and Evelyne (Morris) Farrell of Sidney, Australia; and one granddaughter, Lauren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Liane and one granddaughter, Chanel. Clifford R. “Cliff” Dick, age 71, of Mendon, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 11, 2009, near Paradise, Mich., from injuries received in an ATV accident.  He was born in Lenawee County, Mich., on Jan. 29, 1938, the son of the late L. Evart and Mary (Killinger) Dick.  The family moved to Mendon in 1940 where Cliff attended Mendon High School.  He then served in the U.S. Navy and then returned to Mendon where he worked for the Haas Corporation, later known as Lear Plastics, until his retirement.  Cliff was a very active member of the UAW Local 503 where he served as president for many years.  He was a loyal Mendon football fan and never missed a game.  He enjoyed being outdoors and spending time at his cabin in the U.P.  Cliff was a handyman who designed and built many furniture items for his children and grandchildren.  Cliff is survived by four children and their spouses, Joan and Dan Gibson of Newark, NJ, David E. and Edna Dick of Centreville, Diane and Chuck Zinsmaster of Mendon, and Dawn and Ryan Braysher of Kalamazoo;  eight grandchildren, Jordan Gibson (Dani), Danielle Gibson,  Matt, Ashley, and Megan Zinsmaster, Andrew Chupp, Brandon and Logan Braysher, and David Dick II; one great-grandchild, Lorelie Gibson;  two sisters, Joan Stiteler (Eugene) of Mendon and Faye Bohm (Ronald) of Centreville; several nieces and nephews; and his fiancé, Janice Keene of Three Rivers.  The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today and from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Eickhoff Funeral Home of Mendon.  Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the funeral home.  Military interment will be in Mendon Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to a charity of one’s choice..  Online register is available and condolences may be sent to www.eickhofffuneralhome.com.

Cynthia had been employed by Good Shepherd Credit Union in Lincoln Park for 15 years, retiring in 2002. She enjoyed the Wednesday evening ceramics classes at Creative Outlet in Tecumseh and the many new friends she met. She also enjoyed the friendship and care given to her by Sue and Jessica of Great Lakes Hospice. In addition to her husband, Edwin, she is survived by a son, James (Angela) Westbay of Clearwater, Fla.; a daughter, Danielle Westbay of Adrian; a brother, Philip Ryan of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Sylvia (John) Burton of Pinckney, Mich., and other special people in her life, including Alberta Fitch, Jacob Clark and his daughters Paige and Emily and several nieces and nephews. Herbert E. Watson, Sr., 70, of Quincy, died Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Wilson of the Gospel Lighthouse officiating. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Herbert was born March 26, 1939 in Hillsdale to Roy and Ruth (Camp) Watson. He married Kathern Bowerman on March 7, 1970 in Coldwater. Mr. Watson was currently employed by the Amish Community of Branch County. He had 22 years of service at Addison Products in Jonesville and was a member of the UAW Post # 1141. Herbert enjoyed hunting, fishing, all varieties of racing and CB Radio as he was an Amateur Radio Operator, known by many as “Woodchopper.” He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kathern, his children Connie (Rick) Guthrie of Rocky Point, N.C., Herbert (Betsy) Watson, Jr. of Mt. Crogan, S.C., Lisa (Susan) Watson of Monroe, N.C., Thomas Watson of Coldwater, Hugh Watson of Quincy, his brother James Watson of Otsego, his sisters Anna Thomas of Waterloo, Iowa, Hazel Lennox of Litchfield, Shirley Keith of Osseo, Mary Lou Campbell of Russellville, Mo., Rose Lee Fisher of Mabscott, W.V., 17 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. James Dale Ettinger, 60, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away Monday June 8, 2009, at his home. He was born May 10, 1949, in Sturgis, Mich., a son to the late Albert and Thelma (Snook) Ettinger. James Dale was a lifelong resident of Sturgis and had been employed by the Grav-i-Flo Corporation for many years, until he was forced to retire due to health reasons. He is survived by four brothers, Eugene Ettinger of Mendon, Kenneth (Judy) Ettinger of Sturgis, and Lester Ettinger of Sturgis and Lyle (Denise) Ettinger of Georgia and many nieces and nephews. His parents and one brother; David Ettinger preceded him in death. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial graveside service and burial of the ashes will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis. The Hackman Family Funeral Homes Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Jean Freeland Imlay City Jean Freeland, 87, of Imlay City, passed away at home after an extended illness Wednesday (June 10, 2009). Jean Mary Bingman was born November 9, 1921 in Wilmington, Del., the daughter of Fred and Cora Bingman. She grew up in Lathrup Village, Mich. She had lived in Imlay City since the 1980's. Prior to that, she lived in Grand Rapids and Florida. Jean married John Leslie Walters in 1948. He passed away in 1972. She married her second husband, Melvin Freeland, in the 1970's. He passed away in the 80's. Jean served her country in the U.S. Marine Corp during WWII. She had attended Imlay City United Methodist Church and Imlay City First Congregational United Church of Christ. She had been employed as a receptionist at McCreay Heating and Cooling in the Troy and Southfield offices. Jean was a dancer in off-Broadway musicals and toured the country. She traveled across the country with the dance troops. She is survived by her daughter, Karin (Chuck)

On June 8, 2009, Kristy (Center) Emmons, of Litchfield, passed away peacefully in her sleep following a short, courageous battle with cancer. Kristy was the beloved wife of Rick Emmons and mother of Dom, Rickey, Jared, and Justin, her youngest son, who remained steadfastly by her side and took care of her during her final illness. She is also survived by her sisters, Jeanine Center of Ann Arbor and Maurine Mullikin of Parma, nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends who will miss her greatly.   Kristy was the daughter of Wayne and Jean Center, of Litchfield, who preceded her in death. Her family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of the Community Health Center of Branch County and CHC Hospice for their kind care and compassion. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Kristy’s life will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, June 20 at her home: 239 Washington St., Litchfield. Arrangements were handled by the George White Funeral Home, Litchfield. Leslie R. Everett, age 89, of Colon, died Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Laurels of Coldwater. He had been in failing health. Leslie was born Dec. 24, 1919 in Centreville, son of Michael and Jennie (Weaver) Everett and was a lifelong area resident. He married Wava May Sell in May, 1942 in Colon. She died March 21, 2003. Leslie retired in 1982 from Douglas Manufacturing Company in Bronson after 32 years of service. He was also a livestock farmer raising horses, cattle, hogs, chickens, ponies and mules, and was best known for his horses and ponies. An Army veteran of World War II, Les served as an airplane and engine mechanic and was a member of the American Legion in Colon. He was also a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Sturgis, and a life member of the Prairieville Farm Association, a member of the St. Joseph County Horseman’s Association and a life member of the Michigan Farmer’s Hall of Fame. Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Robert Suits of Montague, Linda and Rex Barrington of Bronson, and Theresa and Douglas Clothier of Lufkin, Texas; his sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie M. and Kathrine Everett of Bronson and Paul Everett of Ocala, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, a great great grandson; his sisters, Dorothy Threwhitt of Kalamazoo and Leona Glaze of Elkhart, Ind.; his brother Louis (Patricia) Everett of Three Rivers and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Everett of Lawton. He was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the Kolcz Funeral Home in Bronson with Pastor Terry Siler of the First Congregational Church officiating. Interment will follow in Nottawa Cemetery with full military honors conferred by the Bronson Post 259 of the American Legion. The family will receive friends at the Kolcz Funeral Home from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, where memorial donations are suggested to the Prairieville Hall of Fame.

She was an active member of the Bad Axe Seniors. Her hobbies included ceramics, knitting, crocheting, reading, doing crossword puzzles and baking the best pies in town. In Maryland, she was known as the "pie lady" where she took her baked goods to the farmer's market., Mary is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Marilyn White of Shelby Township, Mrs. Tom (Maryanne) White of Fort Mill, S.C., and Mrs. Grant (Rosemarie) Bryant of Westover, Md.; six grandchildren, Kristina (David) Kloc, Thomas (Amy) White II, Kerry White and special friend, Ashford Harrigan, Kelly (Mark) Kessen, Jerry (Susan) White, and Theresa (Jeff) Waldron; and eight great-grandchildren, Alexa, Kurt and Brooke Kessen, Matthew, Emily and Jack Kloc, Emma and Julia White, and soon-to-be-born Bryce Waldron., Mary was preceded in death by one son, Jerome; and one son-in-law, Richard White., Cremation has taken place in Maryland. Patricia A. Bauman, 60, of LaGrange, Ind.,  joined her family in heaven on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Parkview LaGrange Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 3, 1948, in Sturgis, the daughter of John and Mildred Jean (Parker) Cart. She and her husband Roger were married June 7, 1969 in Valentine, Ind. Her husband, parents, and her brother, Tom, preceded her in death. A graduate of Lakeland High School, LaGrange, Ind. and Adrian College, Adrian, she retired in 2008 from Lakeland High School after 34 years as a health and physical education teacher.  She also coached cross county and volleyball and was on numerous committees at Lakeland.  Pat loved her family, friends and students, and enjoyed her farm and gardens.  A life long animal lover, Pat provided a haven for many abandoned cats. She volunteered often and especially for Relay for Life and Functional Skill Relay/Special Olympics.  She was a sponsor for Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD), and was a member of the Plato United Methodist Church, Lakeland Education Association, Indiana State Teachers Association, and National Education Association. Surviving are one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis (Lisa) Cart of Jonesboro, Ind.; a brother-in-law, Steven Bauman of Simpsonville, Ky.; and nieces and nephews,  Bethany (Shawn) Miller, Amber Cart, Nathan (Joanna) Cart, Lindsay (Jeff) Turner, and Andrew Cart. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 14, 2009 at 5 p.m. at Frurip-May Funeral Home in LaGrange with Rev. Russell Hepler officiating. Phillip was born Sept. 14, 1939, in Bronson, a son to the late John and Edna (Yesh) Rakocy. He grew up in Bronson graduating from Bronson High School with the Class of 1957. He had lived in Detroit for several years and moved to Colon in 1971. On April 18, 1970, he married Rose Nuccio in Detroit. Phillip had worked as a barber for 50 years and also had worked at Dock Foundry in Three Rivers for 27 years retiring in 2001. Phillip served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Colon American Legion Post #454. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He is survived by his wife, Rose Rakocy; daughter, Rose (Larry) Bontrager; son Jeff (Kathy) Rakocy; three grandchildren, Gary and Eric Bontrager and Zachary Darmofal, all of Colon; sister, Carol (Bob) Edwards of Coldwater; two brothers, Kenneth (Nancy) Rakocy of Arizona and Alan (Clair) Rakocy of Coldwater; and several nieces and nephews. Roland E. ‘Ed’Euler Jr., age 52, of Sturgis, Mich., passed away unexpectedly Friday morning, June 12, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1956 in Sturgis, a son of the late Roland E. and Mary A. (Carter) Euler. Ed had resided in Sturgis his whole life, and graduated from Sturgis High School with the class of 1976. He had been employed by Protective Coating in Sturgis and Jayco Industries in Bristol, Ind. Ed attended the Church of the Stone in Wolcottville, Ind. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, earning the rank of Seaman First Class. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, working on his computer and had a real green thumb when it came to growing house plants. He is survived by his longtime companion, Marinda Tullos of Sturgis; four sisters, Phyllis Ann (Gary) Runyon of Cedar Springs, and Nancy Susan Lipko, Mable (Ronald) Waite and Ellen (Garnet) Waite, all of Sturgis; two brothers, Roger (Bonnie) VanAvery of Sturgis and Bruce VanAvery of Las Vegas; an aunt, Thelma Smith of Sturgis; an uncle, Homer James Carter Jr. of Sturgis; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; a brother, Larry Gene Carter; a sister, Lois Mary Euler; two nephews, Landon Carter and Troy VanAvery; and a niece, Brenda Lee Runyon. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at the Hackman Family Funeral Homes Rosenberg Chapel, 807 E. Chicago Road, Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Roland “Ed” Euler will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Michael Stanley of the Church of the Stone will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis, where full military rites will be conferred by Captain John J. Kelley Post #1355 VFW and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. William "Bill" Baldwin Lapeer William "Bill" Baldwin, 82, a lifetime Lapeer resident, passed away Monday (June 8, 2009). He was born April 5, 1927, in Lapeer, to Fayette P. and Catherine W. (Forystek) Baldwin. He married Dorothy June Williams on June 26, 1948 in Lapeer. Bill graduated from Lapeer High School, class of 1945. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Bill was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years, retiring in 1989. He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Rural Carriers Association. Bill loved his family, hunting and sports. William “Bill” T. Scott, 77 of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Coldwater died Monday, April 28, 2009, in Las Vegas. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 12, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater with Pastor Bob Tharp of the Church of the Nazarene officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Friday. Interment of ashes will follow at 1 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta. Bill was born Sept. 2, 1931 in Kentucky to Johnny and Mary Lee (Hayes) Scott. Mr. Scott sold and serviced hospital lab equipment for many years. He enjoyed wintering in Las Vegas and spending time at his cabin in Baldwin. He was an animal lover and an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. Bill especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren. Mr. Scott is survived by his longtime companion Bertha Bonnano, his sons Duane, Todd, and Rodney Scott and his daughter Rhonda Barnwell, all of Coldwater, two sisters, Martine Grubb of Colon and Becky VanMeter of Borden, Ind., one brother, Dwight Scott also of Borden, Ind., five grandchildren Justin Scott, Ashley Morgan, Brianna Scott, Kerstin Scott and Trevor Scott. She was born July 6, 1936, in Hillsdale County, the daughter of Ernest and Berniece (Poling) Pickford. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, W. Duane Evans; one great grandson, Landon Truitt; three sisters, Ernestine Mercer, Kate Burns and Carol Bowersox; four brothers, Leslie Pickford, John Pickford, Butch Pickford and Sheryll Pickford and three brothers-in-law, Robert Bumpus, George Arno and LeRoy Burns. She is survived by one daughter, Sharon (Tim) Truitt of Jerome; one son, Donald (Judy) Evans of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Brandon and Darren Truitt and Tiffany (Doug) Taylor; two great-grandchildren, Max and Emma Taylor; five sisters, Zelma Arno of Hillsdale, Violetta Bumpus of Jonesville, Myrtle (Robert) Longbrake of Jerome, Loretta (Paul) Sheffer of Jerome and Wanda (Terry) Warner of Jonesville; one sister-in-law, Sandy Pickford of North Adams; two brothers-in-law, Duane Mercer of Jerome and Tom Bowersox of Allen and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Evans was a lifelong resident of Hillsdale County. She graduated from North Adams High School and retired from Jonesville Products after over 30 years of service. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was also an avid Bingo player and a member of the Goldwing Road Riders Association. A funeral service to honor the life of Mrs. Wilma R. Evans will be held at the Hampton-Kurtz Funeral Home in Hillsdale at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 15 with Pastor Paul Pickell officiating. Interment will take place in the Northlawn Cemetery in North Adams. The family will receive friends for visitation 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Hillsdale. Yvonne Elaine “Sue” Harris passed away Friday, June 12, 2009, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Sue was born in Adrian on March 13, 1940, to Fay and Lila (Parker) Smith. She graduated from Adrian High School with the Class of 1958. In 1962, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Michigan State University and a Master of Arts in 1966.  On August 20, 1966, Sue married Maynard Harris in Detroit. Maynard, her husband of over 42 years, survives. Sue was an educator who taught in Ferndale, Farmington, and Tecumseh Public Schools. At one time she was a part-time faculty member of Siena Heights University. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church. In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by three children: Christine Harris, David (Molly) Harris, and Stephen Harris, all of Adrian. She is also survived by four dearly loved granddaughters: Haley Frederick, Grace, Sarah, and Rachel Harris. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Barbara Smith. The funeral service for Sue will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Hope Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Herter officiating. Burial will follow at Lenawee Hills Memorial Park.
