Leora (Wigent) Barant, 90, of Camden, left this world to be with her Savior on July 24, 2009. She was a mother who treated each of her three children as her favorite, a grandmother who served ice cream for breakfast and an animal-lover who made cornbread for her dog. She was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Camden Township, to James W. and Ona B. (Richardson) Wigent. She grew up on a farm in Reading with her mother, father, five brothers and four sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by Ruth (Mrs. Edward) Wigent, whom she thought of as a sister. On March 14, 1946, she married Edward J. Barant in Orange County, California. She was widowed Dec. 13, 1969.  She is survived by three children: Bonnie Kay Thompson who lives in her Camden farmhouse; Edward J. Barant of Fremont, Ind.; and Rebecca (Richard) Corkle of Angola, Ind. She will be dearly missed by all of them. She also leaves two grandchildren: Rachel Corkle of New York City and Jonathan Corkle of Angola, who saw her together for the last time on her 90th birthday – although she denied being ninety. Finally, she leaves a special niece, Susie Lantz, for whom she cared for over the last decades of her life.  Leora was a member of the Nazarene Church in Reading and loved her church family. While at different points of her life, she took on employment outside of her home; her life’s work was being a wonderful mother and grandmother, loving aunt and dear friend. She found happiness giving her time and helping people.  Friends and family are invited to a celebration of Leora’s life at the George White Funeral Home, Reading at 11 a.m. Saturday. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m Friday and from 10 a.m. until time of service on Saturday.  Memorials may be sent to the Reading Nazarene Church (children’s camp fund) or the Steuben County Humane Society. |
