Alice Lozetta Bruce North Branch Alice Lozetta Bruce, 63, of North Branch (formerly of Metamora) passed away Sunday (August 30, 2009). She was born August 25, 1946, in Pontiac, to Emmett and Nettie (Ewald) Flansburg. She married David Bruce on December 22, 1985. Alice worked at Pride Plastics for 15 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, wife and sister. Arthur Rene DeVriendt Dryden Arthur Rene DeVriendt, 65, of Dryden, passed away Thursday (August 27, 2009). Arthur devoted over 20 years to the Lapeer County Sheriffs Department. Eventually, he retired after working his way up the ranks to Under-Sheriff. He was also a member of the Lapeer Area Elks. Arthur enjoyed his dogs and working in the yard. He also loved vacationing to Rapid River in the Upper Peninsula. Most of all Arthur loved his family and spending quality time with his grandsons. He is one "Big Dog"/"Big Buffalo" that will be greatly missed. Bob Hostetler Attica Bob Hostetler, 84, of Attica, loving husband, father and grandfather went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday (August 30, 2009). Charles Robert Hostetler was born on December 29, 1924, in Danville, Ill., the son of Charles and Ruth (Turney) Hostetler. He grew up in Hume, Ill. Bob was a 1941 graduate of Redmond High School in Hume Ill. He attended Indiana University for one year. He married June Carolyne Woods on June 26, 1971 in Romeo. He participated in the "Home Guard" during WWII. Bob retired after 23 years on August 1, 2001, as a model maker for General Motors, Warren Tech Center. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, June Hostetler of Attica; sons Charles M. C. Fabian “Mickey” McGraw, 90, of Hillsdale, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at Drews Place of Hillsdale. He was born Aug. 10, 1919 in Pavo, Ga., to Hezekiah and Leila (Adams) McGraw. He was married June 17, 1950 to Lois Morr and she survives. Mickey received a Bachelor’s degreee in Business Administration from the University of Cincinnati and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was the former president of Hillsdale Tool and Union Steel Products in Albion. Mickey was an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Hillsdale and was a trustee emeritus of Hillsdale College having served as a board trustee from 1975 to 2003. Besides his wife, Lois, he is survived by a daughter, Karen (Houston Morrow) McGraw of Telluride, Colorado; two sons, Michael (Lynn) McGraw of St. Louis, Mo., and Matthew McGraw of Hillsdale; and four grandchildren. Mickey was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers. Memorial services for C. Carlo 'Pappa' Paratore Carlo 'Pappa' Paratore, age 67, of Warren passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009. He was born to the late Gaspere and Grace Paratore, Nov. 1, 1941, in Detroit, Mich. He was the husband of the late Judith Ann Paratore. He retired from Chrysler Warren Stamping after 36 years of service in December, 2000. He is survived by his sister Antoinette Paratore of Clinton Township; his children, Mark Paratore of Warren, Deborah (Ronald) Belanger of Chesterfield Township, and Kimberly (Troy) Wood of Center Line; and sister-in-law Frances Oldeschulte of Sterling Heights. He also was a loving 'pappa' to his grandchildren, Rachel, Carl Jaye, Jacquelyn, Kayla, Nicholas, and Allan. He also loved his two dogs, Misty and B.G. He enjoyed watching the Detroit Tigers with his son and grandson, gardening, and sitting by the fire in his yard. Carol Ann Harton Lansing Age 59, was born October 13, 1949 in Detroit, MI to the late Erskine and Drucilla Crocker. Carol was a loving mother to her son, Christopher and a dear sister to Sherry Forrest. She was a Lansing Community College administrator, who was loved by her colleagues and friends. Carol mentored many students and was the recipient of numerous academia awards. Carol departed this life on Sunday, August 30, 2009, at Sparrow Hospital. She graduated from Reading High School in 1957 and the Toledo School of Nursing. She worked as an obstetrics nurse and retired from Grayling Hospital. Carolyn attended the Camden Missionary Church and was a member of the Reading Wednesday Club. She enjoyed reading, knitting, and getting together with high school and nursing school classmates, and spending time at the family’s Lake Michigamme cottage. On Dec. 27, 2005, she married Elwood Dietrich and he survives. Also surviving are two sons, James C. (Randy) Mason of Mooresville, N.C., and Robert W. Mason of Gaylord; stepchildren, Douglas Dietrich and Scott (Karen) Dietrich, both of Reading; Timothy (Mary) Dietrich of Hillsdale and Dana (Renee) Dietrich of Ray, Ind.; one sister, Dianne (Gale) Netcher of Reading; one brother, C. Wayne (Tara) Weaver of Grand Ledge; four grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Her parents and her first husband, James F. Charles A. Sykes, 85, of Pittsford, passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009 at Hillsdale County Medical Care Facility in Hillsdale. He was born on Aug. 31, 1923 in Romulus, the son of Anthony and Irene (Hubbard) Sykes. He attended Henry Ford Trade School where a passion for cars was born. He married Charlotte A. Curley on Aug. 5, 1977. She survives. Charles lived in the Romulus area until 1986 when he moved to Pittsford. He worked as a master mechanic and truck driver. Charles enjoyed rebuilding cars from the frame up. Surviving Charles besides his wife, Charlotte are ten children, Suzanne (Gary) Maddio of Defiance, Ohio, Charles Sykes of Albright Shores, Thomas (Tami) Sykes of Saginaw, Glenda (Hiram) Harris of Gladwin, Keith Sykes of Boston, Mass., Tammy (Michael) Kling of Coldwater, Daniel (Brandy) Sykes of Osseo, Theresa (Alvin) Mattson of Cement City, Matthew (Jody) Sykes of Pittsford and Rebecca Sykes of Pittsford; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren;eight brothers and sisters and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters.                                                                                 Funeral services for Charles will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home in Hudson with the Rev. She was born on July 15, 1926 in Detroit to the late Stanley and Julianna (Skowronek) Chmielewski. She married Steve W. Skalimowski on June 16, 1951 at St. Mary Mystical Rose Catholic Church in Armada. He preceded her in death on January 2, 1994. She was a graduate of Capac High School. She formerly lived in Yale and Argyle. She owned the grocery store in Argyle for a couple of years and was a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Argyle. She enjoyed traveling, reading and trips to the casino. Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Doreen Smielewski and her husband, Terry of Ubly; two granddaughters, Stephanie Smielewski and Renee Smielewski, both of Ubly; two great granddaughters, Samantha and Jazmin Sweeney, both of Ubly. She was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. The funeral service was held at the Zinger-Smigielski Funeral Home in Ubly with Rev. Dick Kiligian Lapeer Dick Kiligian, 74, of Lapeer (formerly of Oregon, Maui and Romeo) passed away Saturday (August 29, 2009). He was born May 9, 1935, in Detroit, to Marshall and Lillian B. (Spooner) Kiligian. He married Julie Ohlert in 1997 in Maui, Hawaii. Dick worked for 42 years for General Motors - he was a tool maker at the Tech Center research lab. He served his country in the U.S. Marines. He is survived by his wife, Julie Kiligian of Lapeer; daughters, Vickie Kish of Clinton Twp. Sherri Nagy of Clinton Twp. and doreen (Martin) Lattimer of Clinton Twp.; stepchildren, Joseph (Ragenia) Opatik of Attica and Tammy (Mike) Randolf of Brown City; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren. Donald L. Myers, age 88, of Adrian passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, at Bixby Medical Center. Donald was born April 6, 1921, in Defiance, Ohio, the son of Simon and Lillian (Reid) Myers. During World War II, Don was stationed in the Pacific Theatre, where he served in the Marine Corps and was honored with a Purple Heart. On April 10, 1970, Don married Thelma “Ruth” McLaughlin Weber in Wauseon. Ruth, his wife of 38 years, preceded him in death in 2008. Don was a truck driver for Associated Truck Lines where he received a 30-Year Safe Driver Award. For many years he was a volunteer firefighter and EMT in Bedford, Mich. Don was a lifetime member of Chapter 20 Lenawee County Disabled American Veterans. Don is survived by two daughters, Linda Myers of Temperance, Mich., and Colleen Geers of Jones, Mich.; a stepson, Gene (Angie) Weber of Adrian; two sisters, Letha McKeever of Harrison, Mich., and Vivian Yentz of Monroe, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and 15 greatgrandchildren. In addition to his wife, Don was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Siedlecki, and a brother, Melvin Myers. The funeral service for Don will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009, at Wagley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Chris Brundage officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the Annis Fint Post #1584 of the VFW and Chapter 20 Lenawee County Disabled American Veterans. Burial will follow at Pettisville Cemetery in Ohio. Dorothy (Vescelius) Rogers, age 90, of Delaware, Ohio, formerly of Tecumseh, died peacefully on Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, with her family at her side. She was born June 2, 1919, in Clinton, the daughter of Ned and Rhoda (Sallows) Kotts. She was a graduate of Clinton High School, Class of 1937. Dorothy was a very active member in the Missionary Baptist Church while living in Tecumseh. She worked in manufacturing  in Lenawee County for many years. During World War II Dorothy was a “Rosie the Riveter.” She worked at Ypsilanti State Hospital Food Service Department for many years, retiring on Feb. 25, 1986. Dorothy loved her pets and horses. She enjoyed being outdoors and flower gardening.  Dorothy is survived by her son, Lee (Anna) Vescelius of Columbus, Ohio; her daughter, Vicki (Stephen) Briggs of Raleigh, N.C.; her sister, Mary L. Brown of Corona, Calif.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John, and sister, Ilah. Dorothy will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday, Sept. 4, at 11:30 a.m. at the Tecumseh Chapel of Handler Funeral Homes with Pastor Brian Jones of Tecumseh Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Dorothy Arliene Noble Dorothy Arliene Noble, age 96, died peacefully on August 30, 2009, at home in Clinton Township. A longtime resident of Macomb County, she was born in Vermontville, Mich., on July 31, 1913, one of four children and the only daughter of Charles and Dora (Rawson) Wells. In 1933, Arliene began her long career as a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Kalkaska County. She married Vergil E. Noble of Deerford, La., on June 15, 1937, after which she made her home in South Boardman, Mount Clemens, Warren, Center Line, Sterling Heights, and Westland, Mich. Her final years were lived in Clinton Township with the family of granddaughter, Rachele Bricachek. Arliene retired in 1975 from the Van Dyke Public Schools, where she had taught elementary school and special education for nearly 30 years. Thereafter she devoted herself to the care of several family members and was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan. She was the beloved mother of Dennis L. (Loren) Noble, Sandra K. Frank, Charlene S. (Kevin) Pantak, and Vergil E. (Carolyn) Noble Jr.; dearest grandmother of Therese Schutte, Kathleen (Mark) Ritten, Patrick Noble, Rachele (Scott) Brichacek, Joe Frank, and Kelly Salin (Charles) Aikens. In addition, she leaves 12 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and hundreds of former students. Arliene's husband, Vergil, of nearly 54 years passed away in 1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, and one great-grandson. Visitation will be held at Faulmann & Walsh Golden Rule Funeral Home, 32814 Utica Road, Fraser, on Saturday, September 5, 2009, from 11:30 a.m. until the time of funeral service at 1 p.m. with Rev. Emily M. Boley, 84, of Chelsea passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Chelsea Retirement Center. Emily was born in Massachu­setts on July 8, 1925, the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth (Porter) McRae. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Home Economics. She was very active in the First United Methodist Church of Adrian where her husband, Dr. Boley, served as pastor for many years. Harold E. Gainforth 1918-2009 Harold E. Gainforth, 91, Unionville, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2009. He was born in Unionville on July 10, 1918, son of the late Charles and Florence (Hutchinson) Gainforth. On October 25, 1937, he married Margaret Saelens. Harold served with the U.S. Navy during World War II during the Pearl Harbor invasion. He retired in 1979 from Down Chemical Company in Bay City, where he was with the plastic line pipe division. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and gardening. He was a member of American Legion Post 421 in Unionville. He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Margaret; children, Roger H. Ida F. Campbell, age 98, of Adrian passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Lynwood Manor. She was born in Hudson Township on Feb. 14, 1911, to Roy and Maude (Edmonds) Roney. She was married to Myrl J. Campbell on April 11, 1931. They moved to Fairfield in 1935. Myrl and Ida were married for 64 years until his death on Feb. 14, 1996. Ida worked for the Sand Creek Schools for 22 years as a cook, four years at the High School, and 18 years as Manager of the Elementary cafeteria. Ida was active in P.T.A. and Band Boosters, and belonged to Jasper-Fairfield Mothers Club for many years. She was an avid golfer and bowler and loved to garden. Ida is survived by two sons and their wives, Robert and Donna Campbell of Adrian and Donald and JoAnne Campbell of Palmetto, Fla.; three grandchildren, Jerry (Donna) Campbell, John (Lisa) Campbell and Jane (Gary) Baughey; six great-grandchildren, Amy, Brian, Jason, Joshua, Justin, and Jesika; several nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law, Norma Miller of Tecumseh. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Clifford, George, Glenn and Wynn Roney. JACK TAYLOR BROWN CITY Jack Taylor, age 87, of Brown City, died Monday, August 24, 2009. He was born October 16, 1921 in Albion, Michigan, the son of Earl and Vina Taylor. He graduated from Brown City High School. Jack married Ardith Marle (Larsen) Payne on January 14, 1956. He was a farmer and a heavy equipment operator for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324. Jack loved to be outside working or just enjoying being outdoors. He was a long time member of the Brown City United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ardith Taylor; two children, Patricia L. Barr of Bay City and Gloria (Leonard) Reou of Attica; one son-in-law, Charles (Danielle) Cahoon and five grandchildren, James (Ann Marie), Jeffrey, Eric, Beth and Johnathon "JT", four great-grandchildren and two sisters, Barbara Clark and Betty Finley. He was born December 27, 1947 in Goodells, Michigan, the son of Willard and Mary (Odle) Caughel. He and Jewel Dove were married August 1, 1994. John was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War. James L. Gilhouse, age 73, of Williamston died Aug. 29, 2009. He was born March 22, 1936. in Adrian, Mich. Mr. Gilhouse was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Daisy Gilhouse, and three brothers, Albert, Bill and LeRoy. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Dixie; daughter, Cindy Smith, and son, Scott and his wife, Michelle Gilhouse; seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren; his sister, Helen and her husband, Jack Dennis; and his sister-in-law, Linda Ragusa. Since his retirement he has enjoyed the camaraderie shared with his buddies almost daily at breakfast. Jim graduated from MSU in 1969. He taught at East Lansing High School and Lansing Community College where he started their diesel program. He owned and operated Jim’s Truck Service. Jim was a former member of Kiwanis and an active member of the Masons. Larry D. Fellows, 49, of Waldron, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 26, 1959, in Gary, Ind., the son of Landon Duane and Nancy Sue (Goodrich) Fellows. He married Tammy Metcalf on Feb. 14, 2008, in Hillsdale, and she survives. Larry was a self-employed milk hauler for more than 32 years and owner of Fellows Trucking in Waldron. He graduated from Waldron High School Class of 1978, was a member of Michigan Milk Haulers Association and enjoyed collecting toy tractors and semis. He dearly loved his family and will be greatly missed by all. Surviving Larry besides his wife, Tammy, are a daughter, Dawn Fellows of Coldwater; one son, Bert (Cindy) Fellows of Pittsford; three step-children, Crystal Rau of Catawba, Ohio; Cory Rau of Waldron and John (Crystal) Rau of Waldron; two sisters, Lesta Preston of Ann Arbor and Priscilla Fellows of Phoenix; one brother, Jim (Ann) Fellows of Waldron; several nieces and nephews. Marcella was first married to Elton Barkman and after his passing she married Harold Myers.  He also preceded her in death. She enjoyed playing Bingo, playing cards, crossword puzzles, needlepoint, collecting rabbits, and being with people, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Wayne, Ind.  He was born Dec. 21, 1926 in Camden Township to Joseph G. and Jennie (Canfield) Pish and graduated from Reading High School. Doc was an auctioneer, farmer and had also worked in the oil business. Mattie Troyer, age 95, of Colon, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009, at her home. Mattie was born Jan. 18, 1914, in Reno County, Kan., a daughter to the late Mose P. and  Susan (Miller) Miller. On June 18, 1933, she married Reuben J. Troyer in Conway, Kan. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1980. Mattie had made her home in rural Colon since 1962 coming from Oklahoma. She was a homemaker and enjoyed making quilts.  Mattie was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. She is survived by five daughters, Sue Cole of Colon, Mary (Lonnie) Miller of Rutherford, Tenn., Kate (Marvin) Schlabach of Sturgis, Ann Hostetler of Colon, and Marty (Dave) Chiddister of Colon; three sons, Harry R. Troyer of Burr Oak, Mose R. (Ruth) Troyer of Mendon and Junior (Sue ) Troyer of Colon; adopted children, Truman and Susan Bontrager of Colon; 33 grandchildren and 82 great-grandchildren; one brother, Harvey Miller of Anthony Kan.; one sister, Mary Hershberger of Millersburg, Ind.; four half brothers, Harry, Mose, Reuben and Henry Miller all of Ohio; one half sister, Rachel Girod of New York; two step sisters, Mattie Stutzman and Susie Wengerd; one step-brother Levi Hershberger, all of Ohio, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one son, David Troyer; six grandchildren; son-in-law, Murl Cole; daughter-in-law, Josie Troyer; adopted son-in-law, Wilbur Schmucker; two brothers and three sisters. The family will receive relatives and friends all day today at the Double M. Building, 59321 Nottawa Rd., one mile north of Nottawa. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at the Double M Building with Bishop’s Marvin Yoder and Clarence Miller officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Order Amish Cemetery Centreville, Mich. If desired, the family suggest memorials be made to Hospice of Sturgis. Max Brandeberry, 85, formerly of Jerome, Mich., passed away Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the State Veterans Home in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Williams County, Ohio, the son of Earl and Faye (Esterline) Brandeberry. He married Donna Vee Stafford on Feb. 27, 1946, in Pioneer, Ohio, and she preceded him in death on July 28, 2003. Max retired as Plant Manager from Risdon Dairy in Detroit, Mich., and also was employed as Distribution Manager for Domino's Pizza in Detroit and Branch Manager for Thompson Savings Bank in Manitou Beach. He moved to the Jerome area in 1960 and spent his winters in the Lakeland, Fla., area. He was President of the Kings & Queens Homeowners Association in Florida, a member of Lions Club in Michigan and Florida, and the Waldron Wesleyan Church. He was a volunteer for Jackson City Library and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Surviving Max are two daughters, Debra (Steve) Svinicki of Rio Verde, Ariz., and Marsha (Mike) Wesolowski of Bothell, Wash.; one son, Larry (Karen) Brandeberry of Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Misty, Shilow, Shelby, Ray, Mallory, Marc and Cody; and two great-grandchildren, Brayden and Morgan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Carmen Brandeberry. Memorial services for Max will be Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Eagle Funeral Home in Hudson, Mich., with the Rev. Clyde Wonders officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the time of service. Interment will be in Waldron Cemetery at a later date. Michael Dennis Wiltse Haslett Age 64, passed away on Monday, August 31, 2009 in Lansing, Michigan. He was born on March 4, 1945, to Winton and Gladys (Richard) Wiltse in Lansing, Michigan. After graduating from Eastern High School in 1963 he joined the Air Force and served for 4 years. Mike was managing a Shakey's Pizza in Arkansas when he was in a car accident and received a serious closed head injury in 1969. He was active in Disabled American Veterans and Brain Injury Association. He held offices in both organizations. He volunteered time for Meals on Wheels for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Winton and Gladys Wiltse. Mike is survived by his loving companion, Janis Clinkscale; son, David (Kristi) Wiltse of Arkansas; 4 grandchildren, Alyssa, Brandon, Ethan, Brianna; sister, Judy Cox and several nieces and nephews. The family wants to thank Hospice of Lansing for their excellent care, especially Dawn, Donna, Ann, Susan and Denise for the loving support they gave to Mike. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing on Thursday, September 3, 2009 at 12:30. Norman E. Kreger Norman E. Kreger, age 87, of Clinton Township, passed away Tuesday at Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1922, to August and Bertha Kreger in Utica, Michigan. On February 3, 1945, Norman married Pearl Russell in Utica. The couple settled in Clinton Township. Mr. Kreger retired in 1974 after many years of employment at the Chrysler Corporation. He served in the United States Army, and was a member of the F.O.E. 1269 Mount Clemens, American Legion Post 4 Mount Clemens and the Moose Lodge in St. Clair Shores. Norman enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are his sons, Roy Kreger of Clinton Township and Glenn (Janice) Kreger of Sterling Heights; grandchildren, Scott (Linda) Kreger, Lynette (Darin) Hanna and Kris (Kristie) Kreger; great-grandchildren, Gregory, Dustin, Dallas, Tara, Ashley and Emilie, and his sister, Betty Verlinde. Norman was predeceased by his wife, Pearl in 1989; a sister, Alivina Merrow, and brothers, Elmer, Walter, Herman, Henry, Albert and Alfred. Priscilla M. McElmurry, 88, passed away Jan. 27, 2009, at her daughter’s home. She was born on Aug 7, 1920, in the Chicago area, the daughter of James and Priscilla Gibb of Lansing. On Aug. 17, 1940, she married Daryl McElmurry. Priscilla was preceded in death by her son, Daryl Gibb McElmurry, her husband Daryl H. McElmurry and her granddaughter Daryl K. McElmurry. Her surviving children are Thomas McElmurry (Denise) of Texas, Priscilla Young (Ken) of Livonia, Melissa Rippee of Jackson and her daughter-in-law Phyllis McElmurry. She was fortunate to have nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Priscilla loved gardening, sewing, needlepoint, reading, golf and the quiet of the countryside. A memorial service was held at her home where her loving presence was felt by all. We all miss her. |

Ralph W. Clemmons, 68, formerly of Reading, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Tender Care, Marshall. He was born Dec. 23, 1940, in Dearborn Heights to John W. and Grace (Brooks) Clemmons. Ralph worked in drywall construction and enjoyed CB radios, fishing, golf and listening to music. One of his favorite jobs as a young man was exercising the horses at DRC-Ladbrooke. On May 25, 1962, he married Marie Milz and she preceded him in death in 2005. Surviving are four daughters, Tammy (Glen) Whitaker of Camden, Grace (Richard) Hinckley of Coldwater, Lisa (Todd) Crank of Reading, Colleen (Gerald) Collins, Jr. of Reading; three sister-in-laws, Deborah (Dave) Snowburger of Battle Creek, Colleen (Jerry) Supron of Georgia, Nancy Gillette of Hillsdale; 14 grandchildren;  six  great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Maplewood Cemetery, Reading. Richard Lowell McCleery, age 67, of Petersburg died Saturday night, Aug. 29, 2009, at Lake Park Nursing Center, Sylvania, Ohio. Born Nov. 13, 1941, in Bluffton, Ohio, Richard was the son of Ward and Ethel (Foreman) McCleery. A 1960 Summerfield High School graduate, he married Nancy J. Lowe on Dec. 24, 1960, in Adrian, Mich. He served with the U.S Army from October 1960 to October, 1963. A member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 17, Detroit, he was a lineman for 40 years, retiring in 2007. He was an electrical Inspector for five years. Richard was also a Sheriff's Deputy from 1976-1980, and served as the Deerfield Chief of Police for two years. He was a member of the Ida United Methodist Church, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Monroe County Antique Tractor Association. Survivors include his wife, Nancy; three sons, Robbin Patrick (Mary) of Ida, Ricki Dean of Malabar, Fla., Michael Ryan (Audra) of Petersburg; a brother, Don Lee (Mary) of Gresham, Ore.; six grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan, Christopher, Jason, Richard, David and Brittney; and a great-granddaughter, Jasmine. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Virginia Wilhite. Friends may call at the Capaul Funeral Home, Ida, on Tuesday from noon until 7 p.m. Cremation will follow with private a graveside services at a later date. Robert Thomas Martin Robert Thomas Martin, also known as "T-Bone," was born September 20, 1923, in Wynder, Arkansas. He is the oldest of five children born to Ellis and Lula Martin. He was called "Home to Glory" on August 29, 2009. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Ellis and Lula Martin; three brothers, Andrew, John and Howard Martin, and two daughters, Colinda Faye Martin and Marilyn Martin-Barnette. Robert was employed at New Haven Foundry, General Motors, Macomb Daily, and worked 45 years in the construction industry for Cook, De'Angelo, and Midwest Construction companies. He retired in 1998. Robert was a life member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union. Roger L. Boatman, 70, of Cedar Rapids, died at St. Luke’s Hospital, Monday, August 24, 2009. Roger was born Feb. 15, 1939, in Detroit, to Harold and Marion Boatman. He married Hania Jakowiec in Westport, Mass. Feb. 11, 1961. He was a quality control engineer for Polo Industries, retiring in 2004. Roger was a Navy veteran. Roger is survived by beloved wife, Hania; sons, John (Pat) Boatman of Deltona, Fla., Stephen (Lisa) Boatman of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Paul Boatman of Garfield, Arkansas; sister, Marion Joslin of Omaha, Neb.; brothers, Harold Boatman of Redford Township, Mich., and Douglas (Diana) Boatman of Jonesville; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ronald Roy Schrock, age 57‚ of Centreville passed away Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at his home. He was born in LaGrange, Ind., on May 10, 1952, a son of Roy D. and Rachael  I. (Hershberger) Schrock. Ron graduated from Centreville High School in 1970 and attended Glen Oaks Community College for two years. On Nov. 6, 1971, Ron married Florence M. Hagelgans  in Centreville. Together they have been foster parents for the last 23 years. Ron worked at the Michigan Milk Producers Association in Constantine for 33 years. Surviving Ron are his wife Florence M. BALTIMORE, Md. — Ronald W. Halferty, 45, of Waterloo, Ind. and formerly of Coldwater died unexpectedly, Monday, Aug. 31, 2009 in Baltimore, Md. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday beginning at 1 p.m. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Interment will be at a later date at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater. Ron was born March 23, 1964 in Coldwater to Donald and Norma (Gordon) Halferty. He attended Coldwater High School and served in the US Marine Corp. Mr. Halferty relocated to Waterloo, Ind. and worked for the R. White Construction Co. in Metz, Ind. for the past 18 years, traveling throughout the eastern U.S. building canopies for outdoor structures. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed riding motorcycles and scooters, fishing, camping and shooting guns. He enjoyed music and was skilled in wood carving and writing poetry. Ron was preceded in death by his father Donald and his maternal and paternal grandparents. He is survived by his significant other Lynn White and his daughter Amy Halferty, both of Waterloo, his mother and step father Norma and Henry Findley, his brother Scott Halferty and Deb McKee, all of Coldwater, his stepdaughter Carrie, step sister Misty (Rik) Kaiser of Coldwater, step grandchildren Notasin and Distany, and his step grandmother Jo Ann Halferty of Coldwater. Stewart D. Swihart Sr., age 97, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, 404 Cottage, Sturgis, Mich., died peacefully at Thurston Woods Village on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009. He was born Oct. 25, 1911, to Dyoll and Ella (Dague) Swihart in Howe, Ind.  He graduated Brighton High School (1929) and Purdue University (1934) with a mechanical engineering degree.  He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Reserve Officers Corp. In 1937, he married Irene L. Koon in Kendallville, Ind.  She died in 1971. In 1975, he married Lillian (Walters) Stukey in Sturgis. Stewart served five years, stateside, in World War II as a pilot instructor, and separated from the United States Air Force Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel.  At age 60, he was assigned to the United States Air Force, retired.  He purchased and operated Royal Crown Bottling Company in Sturgis for 27 years.  He later worked and retired from Keybank in Sturgis.  In his early years, he worked for the Essington Co., Ft. Wayne, Ind., and received two United States patents for mechanisms controlling the flow of liquids.  He was an active church and community member.  He served as Chairman of the Congregation at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a member of the Board of Elders, Chairman of the Board of Property, and communion steward.  He was an active Sturgis Exchange Club member earning Exchangite of the Year, The Book of Golden Deeds, and honored for 50 years of service in the Exchange Club.  He was recognized by the Exchange Club for starting a scholarship at Glen Oaks Community College Nursing School.  He served on the Sturgis Airport Advisory Board and was chosen to be the Sturgis Citizen of the year in 2003.  He was a charter member of the Popcorn Guild at Sturgis Hospital. He was a certified private pilot flying his airplane for business and pleasure.  Many flights were trips to Purdue football games and Purdue class reunions.  He was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association and the Purdue Forever Club.  He was an avid “Boilermaker” and Big Ten fan.  He also enjoyed his speedboat rides on Klinger Lake and hosting his Cleveland family members at Klinger Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife; three brothers, Donald, Maynard, and Ledger Swihart; and several nieces and nephews. Surviving are his wife, Lillian; a son, Stew (Donna) Swihart II; grandchildren, Scott Swihart of Sturgis, Steven (Lisa) Swihart of Lansing, and Cathy (Kurt) Stevens of Grand Rapids; five great-grandchildren, Grayson Swihart, William and Jackson Swihart, and Becca and Andy Stevens.  He is also survived by a step-daughter, Christine (Duane) Gonser of Sturgis and a step-son, Jon Stukey of Atlantic City; four step-grandchildren, April (Galen) Geigley, Andrew and Steven Mathews, and Torri Stukey; two step-great-grandchildren, Carina and Cierra Geigley.  Other survivors are a niece, Marla Swihart; a nephew, Martin Swihart; sister-in-law, Donna (Frank) Krontz; brother-in-law, Clarence (Elaine) Walters and many nieces and nephews from the Sturgis, Howe, and Cleveland areas. Valerie Ellen DeFrane Lapeer Valerie Ellen DeFrane, 71, of Lapeer (formerly of Bad Axe) passed away Thursday (August 27, 2009). She was born June 29, 1938, in Huron County, to James and Mary (Gainor) Dobson. She married Leon William DeFrane on April 2, 1978 in Sterling Heights. Mrs. DeFrane was a member of the Lapeer Area Elks, Moose Lodge - Lapeer and American Legion Women's Auxiliary. She is survived by her children, Terrance Rifenbark of Lapeer, James (Barb) Rifenbark of Philadelphia, Tenn., Patrick (Karen) Doherty of Berkley, Mary (John Piorunek) Stikeleather of Clifford; stepchildren, Cindy (Steve) Moelter of Freeland and Bruce (Judy) DeFrane of St. Clair; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; siblings, Leila Quigley of Milford, Elaine (Edward) Walsh of Sterling Heights, Roger (Toni) Dobson of Valparaiso, Ind., Bradley (Mary) Dobson of Bad Axe. Vernon H. Teeple, 82, of Sturgis, died Aug. 15, 2009, following a long illness. He passed away at the Veteran’s Palliative Care Ward in Battle Creek, Mich., with his family by his side. He was very proud of his military service, serving his country in the U.S. Naval Air in World War II. He enlisted after his only brother, Staff Sergeant Richard J. Teeple, was killed in Negros Island, Phillippine Islands. Vernon was born on March 6, 1927, in Dearborn, Mich., to Harold and Nellie Teeple. He attended Dearborn Schools and graduated from Fordson High School. On Aug. 21, 1948, he married Clara Rantz, also from Dearborn. At the time of his death, they were married 61 year. He and Clara had three sons, Rance (Diane) of South Lyon, Richard (Judy) of Dearborn and Wes (Cheryl) of Sturgis. He also had five grandchildren, Brad, Cassie, Stephanie, Rantz and Ryan, who gave him a great deal of pleasure. He is also survived by one sister, Marilyn (Hank) Kazner of Reno, Nev., and one sister-in-law, Helen (Charles) Kayson of Rockwood, Mich; and many nieces and newphews. He was happiest when he was hunting, fishing and camping with his family. After the war, Vernon and his father started a small print shop, Du Processing in Dearborn. He worked at that for 16 years until his father’s death. After selling the business, he was employed at Gaylord Printing Company until his retirement in 1989. He was prceded in death by his parents, a very young brother and sister and his military brother, Richard. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Fort Custer National Cemetery.   |

Virginia Louise Campbell of Coldwater passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 at the Community Health Center of Branch County. She was born Nov. 22, 1924 in Vernon Township, Shiawassee County to Orin and Beulah (Parkhurst) Cornish. She married Walter C. Campbell of Coldwater, on Aug. 14, 1948 in Lansing. He preceded in death Jan. 10, 1996. Survivors include five siblings Mark (Hilda) Cornish of Reading, Betty (Robert) Smith of Coldwater, Orin (Doris) Cornish of Crystal River, Fla., Anne (Hurb) Anderson of Carriere, Miss., and Dave (Judy) Cornish of Coldwater. Preceding her in death were her husband, her parents, and five siblings, Levi Cornish, Ruth Swain, Robert Cornish, Joan Ross, and Norma Arnold. A private family graveside service was held Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater with Rev.
